From late afternoon thunderstorms to s'mores by the campfire with friends and family, summers are a wonderful time of year filled with many different stereotypical memories that pop into mind as the word is spoken.

There are different seasons in a year, summer, monsoon, autumn, winter, and spring. With each season, we witness certain changes not only in our lives but also on our Earth. Seasons are reminders to us that change is inevitable. India is one of the few countries that experiences all six seasons in a year. They are summer, monsoon, autumn, pre-winter, winter, and spring. However, these seasons vary from region to region due to factors like latitude, longitude, topography, and environmental factors. As per the Hindu calendar, each season is divided into two months throughout the year.

The summer season is one of the main seasons in a tropical country like India. Summer sets in April and continues up to the end of July. Summer is usually associated with hot, dry weather. The days are longer, and the nights are shorter during this season. From late morning to midnight, heat persists during the summer months.

In the Hindu calendar, these months are called Jyeshta and Aashaadha. In India, since the tropic of cancer passes through the northern hemisphere, the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh experience the summer season. The temperature in some places increases up to 50o Celsius.

Disadvantages

The days become so hot and long that people suffer from terrible heat right from the morning till midnight. It becomes difficult for people to commute. Most people are spotted in light dresses, sunglasses, and sandals. On some days, a hot and dusty wind blows at noon and makes life more miserable. People prefer staying indoors. In the northern part of India, this wind is called 'Loo', and it is not safe to get exposed to this. In the daytime, the scorching heat of the sun affects normal life. The difficulties in this season are innumerable. Ponds and pools dry up. The water level in wells also goes down. A water crisis is felt almost everywhere. The absence of enough trees and persistent pollution aggravates the problems in summer. The weak and the old sometimes fall victim to sunstrokes in the hot sun. Birds and stray animals face lots of hardship, as they don't get sufficient water to drink. Many health issues like dysentery, dehydration, and diarrhoea are prevalent in this season. The towns and cities look deserted in the afternoons. Everything comes to a standstill during the day because of the simmering rays of the sun. The nights become pleasant, and most activities are done after the sunset during this season.

Besides the innumerable difficulties people face, it is the most awaited season, especially by the students. They get over with their final exams, and it is vacation time for them as well as their parents. They plan to visit their grandparents or places like hill stations to escape the heat. Some also go to the beaches, as they are very pleasant at night. Children take up many indoor activities. Swimming and other water sports are some favorite outdoor activities in this season, making it somewhat pleasant. Summer break for the students is a good time for learning various new activities. Most students go for summer camps at cooler places.

Various kinds of vegetation thrive around us. Many kinds of fruits and flowers are available in this season. Mango is the most dominant fruit of the summer season. Other fruits like jackfruits, guava, litchis, watermelons, and pineapples are available in plenty in the summer season.

We can see many beautiful animals and creatures thriving in our surroundings since they wake up from their hibernation.

Cold drinks, ice-creams, and watery fruit juices like grapes, cucumber, watermelon, are in high demand in this season. People prefer cold foods like kulfis, chilled juices, etc.

It is an important season for the farmers. They sow seeds for new crops because this climate is favorable for the cultivation of the crops. They sow Zaid crops like pumpkin, cucumber, and bitter gourd, etc.

Important festivals like Buddha Purnima, Rath yatra are celebrated during this season. Some more important festivals like Baisakhi, Ram Navami, Raja Parva, and Hanuman Jayanti are also celebrated.

The summer season, which is full of heat and dust, is a blessing in disguise. The scorching rays of the sun evaporate the water from all water bodies at this time, and this phenomenon gives way to the advent of the rainy season. The low pressure created over the landmass of India during this season is responsible for months-long monsoon rain.

Like all other seasons, summer has its own uniqueness. There are both advantages and disadvantages in this season but this season can be enjoyed to the fullest.

  • A variety of fruits, flowers, and vegetables from various kinds of plants and trees are available to devour.

My favourite season is the rainy season, and it begins in July in India, when the southwest monsoon winds begin to blow. It occurs in the Hindi months of asadha and shawan . Everyone likes it because the fresh air and rainwater make the air clear, cool, and clean. Plants, trees, and grasses turn to a beautiful shade of green. After a lengthy period of scorching heat, the plants and trees sprout new leaves as they receive natural water. The entire surroundings exude lush vegetation that is pleasing to see. My favourite festivals, such as Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, Teej, and Dussehra, are all celebrated during the rainy season. During this season, we also like eating many fresh fruits and fully ripe mangoes. While it is raining, my mother prepares various wonderful dishes like pakoras, halwa, and idli to relish our taste buds and set the mood as per the season.

Here is a simple sample essay for class 3 about the rainy season.

The rainy season is one of India’s four major seasons. The rainy season is divided into months in each region (such as the Mediterranean, which have dry summers and wet winters.) In tropical rainforests, there is no such month (or rainy season) because rainfall is evenly spread throughout the year. In India, the rainy season lasts for about three months. It occurs every year after the summer season, notably in July, and lasts until September. The monarch butterfly migrates from Mexico, and several reptiles and amphibians begin to lay eggs around this time. To avoid flooding, animals that live underground migrate to higher ground.

Importance Of Rainy Season

The rainy season plays a pivotal role for countries like India, where a large number of the population depends on agriculture. Everyone enjoys the rainy season because it provides a much-needed break from the blazing sun. It cools everyone by removing all of the heat from the environment. It promotes the proper growth of plants, trees, grasses, crops, and vegetables. It’s also a good time for animals because there are plenty of green grasses and small plants to munch on. Rainwater fills up every natural resource, such as rivers, ponds, and lakes. With enough water to drink and thrive, all the birds and animals are content. The rainy season is also important for maintaining groundwater levels and natural resource levels. All living and non-living things rely on the natural water, which is replenished throughout the rainy season to last until the following season. Rainwater can also be used to generate energy, a process known as hydroelectricity. The water levels of the ponds and lakes tend to rise as a result of the rain. Small ponds are also built to collect rainwater and then used to create electricity.

Ways To Stay Safe & Healthy During The Rainy Season

Following are some guidelines that everyone should follow to stay healthy and safe during the monsoon season:

1. Wear Appropriate Rain Gear

People must wear rain gear such as waterproof boots, hooded raincoats, and umbrellas while venturing out during the rainy season. Children with a weakened immune system should not go outside in the rain without suitable rain gear, as they may acquire a cold.

2. Warm Water Showers

If kids are soaked, it is recommended that they take a warm shower. This will assist their bodies in regaining control and returning to a normal temperature. People can also bathe with hot water because the temperature drops dramatically during the monsoon season.

3. Basic Safety

Children and adults participating in outdoor activities such as swimming should return to the campus if they hear thunder, even if it has not yet begun to rain. Avoiding open areas like playgrounds and metal items like light poles is recommended.

4. Cleanliness

People develop a common cold during the rainy season; thus, cleanliness is crucial. Before doing any job or eating, we should always sanitise our hands. When we go home, we should always wash our hands and feet, especially if we have contact with floodwater.

5. Prevent Water Stagnation

Stagnant water provides a breeding ground for mosquitos, which carry diseases like malaria and dengue fever. To avoid this, homeowners should drain still water sources such as pet water bowls, planter trays and plates, and inflatable pools around their homes regularly.

6. Keep Away From Floodwater

Keep your children away from floodwaters. Wading in floodwater, especially barefoot, is a fun activity for them. Children should not enter floodwaters because they may contract leptospirosis, a bacterial disease. They should also sanitise any toys that have been polluted by this water before using them.

The rainy season is the most enjoyable time of the year. Also, for countries like India that have agriculture as the backbone of the economy, it is more important than any other material. The rainy season is a wonderful season of joy.

Your child will learn about rainy season composition and think about the topic and share their perspective while honing writing, expressiveness, vocabulary, and grammar abilities. Essays for grades 1, 2 & 3 kids can help them learn to express themselves verbally and even consider the matter from the perspective of others.

We hope the sample essays above will assist your kids in writing a superb composition about the rainy season in India.

How NASA Tracked the Most Intense Solar Storm in Decades

May 2024 has already proven to be a particularly stormy month for our Sun. During the first full week of May, a barrage of large solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) launched clouds of charged particles and magnetic fields toward Earth, creating the strongest solar storm to reach Earth in two decades — and possibly one of the strongest displays of auroras on record in the past 500 years.

We’ll be studying this event for years. It will help us test the limits of our models and understanding of solar storms.

“We’ll be studying this event for years,” said Teresa Nieves-Chinchilla, acting director of NASA’s Moon to Mars (M2M) Space Weather Analysis Office. “It will help us test the limits of our models and understanding of solar storms.”

The first signs of the solar storm started late on May 7 with two strong solar flares. From May 7 – 11, multiple strong solar flares and at least seven CMEs stormed toward Earth. Eight of the flares in this period were the most powerful type, known as X-class, with the strongest peaking with a rating of X5.8. (Since then, the same solar region has released many more large flares, including an X8.7 flare — the most powerful flare seen this solar cycle — on May 14.)

Traveling at speeds up to 3 million mph, the CMEs bunched up in waves that reached Earth starting May 10, creating a long-lasting geomagnetic storm that reached a rating of G5 — the highest level on the geomagnetic storm scale, and one that hasn’t been seen since 2003.

“The CMEs all arrived largely at once, and the conditions were just right to create a really historic storm,” said Elizabeth MacDonald, NASA heliophysics citizen science lead and a space scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

When the storm reached Earth, it created brilliant auroras seen around the globe. Auroras were even visible at unusually low latitudes, including the southern U.S. and northern India. The strongest auroras were seen the night of May 10, and they continued to illuminate night skies throughout the weekend. Thousands of reports submitted to the NASA-funded Aurorasaurus citizen science site are helping scientists study the event to learn more about auroras.

“Cameras — even standard cell phone cameras — are much more sensitive to the colors of the aurora than they were in the past,” MacDonald said. “By collecting photos from around the world, we have a huge opportunity to learn more about auroras through citizen science.”

Red and green streaks of an aurora radiate out from the center of the photo. Black silhouettes of trees line the edge.

By one measure of geomagnetic storm strength, called the disturbance storm time index which dates back to 1957, this storm was similar to historic storms in 1958 and 2003. And with reports of auroras visible to as low as 26 degrees magnetic latitude, this recent storm may compete with some of the lowest-latitude aurora sightings on record over the past five centuries, though scientists are still assessing this ranking.

“It’s a little hard to gauge storms over time because our technology is always changing,” said Delores Knipp, a research professor in the Smead Aerospace Engineering Science Department and a senior research associate at the NCAR High Altitude Observatory, in Boulder, Colorado. “Aurora visibility is not the perfect measure, but it allows us to compare over centuries.”

MacDonald encourages people to continue submitting aurora reports to Aurorasaurus.org , noting that even non-sightings are valuable for helping scientists understand the extent of the event.

Leading up to the storm, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center, which is responsible for forecasting solar storm impacts, sent notifications to operators of power grids and commercial satellites to help them mitigate potential impacts.

Warnings helped many NASA missions brace for the storm, with some spacecraft preemptively powering down certain instruments or systems to avoid issues. NASA's ICESat-2 — which studies polar ice sheets — entered safe mode, likely because of increased drag due to the storm.

Looking Forward

Better data on how solar events influence Earth's upper atmosphere is crucial to understanding space weather's impact on satellites, crewed missions, and Earth- and space-based infrastructure. To date, only a few limited direct measurements exist in this region. But more are coming. Future missions, such as NASA’s Geospace Dynamics Constellation (GDC) and Dynamical Neutral Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (DYNAMIC), will be able to see and measure exactly how Earth’s atmosphere responds to the energy influxes that occur during solar storms like this one. Such measurements will also be valuable as NASA sends astronauts to the Moon with the Artemis missions and, later, to Mars.

An image of the Sun shows a bright flash in the bottom right side where a solar flare erupts.

The solar region responsible for the recent stormy weather is now turning around the backside of the Sun, where its impacts can’t reach Earth. However, that doesn’t mean the storm is over. NASA’s Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO), currently located at about 12 degrees ahead of Earth in its orbit, will continue watching the active region an additional day after it is no longer visible from Earth.

“The active region is just starting to come into view of Mars,” said Jamie Favors, director for the NASA Space Weather Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “We’re already starting to capture some data at Mars, so this story only continues.”

A close-up view of a spiral galaxy fills most of the scene. It has a bright, glowing spot at its core, broad spiral arms that hold many dark threads of dust, and pink glowing spots across the disk that mark areas of star formation. A faint halo that bleeds into the dark background surrounds the galaxy’s disk.

This illustration is awash in bright blues, with only areas of the black background of space peeking out near the edges. Just above center is a large white spiral galaxy that is forming within a large cloud of blue gas. Its spiral arms twirl clockwise. Immediately around the galaxy’s edges are larger light blue dots. The gas appears thicker and brighter blue below the galaxy and toward the bottom left in what looks like a loose, extended column. Other wispy blue gas appears all around the galaxy, extending to every edge of the illustration. There are two additional spiral galaxies, though they are about half the size of the one at the center. They appear toward the top left and bottom right, and both are connected to regions of blue gas. Several bright knots dot the brightest blue areas near the center, and toward the top right. The background is clearer and more obviously black along a wider area at the left edge, a sliver along the top right, and in triangles toward the bottom right corner.
