A Guide for Teachers

UNITY AND HARMONY are considered two of the most important principles of design, since they’re two of the most ever present principles that will make or break your entire piece. This concept can actually be somewhat difficult to get the hang of, so let’s start by defining what unity and harmony are!

What is Unity?

Unity and harmony are fairly similar in terms of how they’re used within art, so it’s much simpler to group them together. Unity is the principle that controls the overall cohesiveness of your artwork. It helps take all of the elements of art and make them feel whole. However, while making everything exactly the same creates unity, it can make your art feel very boring.

What is Harmony?

This is when harmony comes into play -- harmony is all about using the elements of art to point out the similarities within different subjects. Harmony could be as technical as creating a cohesive art style, or as simple as using the colour red within every object you add. But before I get too ahead of myself, let’s talk about how to use unity and harmony!

Unity and Harmony with Colour

It’s incredibly easy to create unity with your colour -- all you need to do is work with the same colour across the board. However, only using that single colour can get fairly boring, so harmony steps in with colour schemes and palettes. In very concise terms, a colour scheme is a group of 2 or more colours that look good together according to the colour wheel. The addition of more colours adds variety, another principle of design, which makes your art look much more interesting.

A Boy With A Pipe by Pablo Picasso is a great example of unity and harmony being used within a historical piece of art. This was painted during Picasso’s rose period, which is when he mostly used warmer colours. You can actually see that he used an orange underpainting, which is a layer of paint you add to your canvas before you actually start painting your subject matter. So even though this entire palette is complementary (two colours across from each other on the colour wheel), it still feels very warm overall.

Unity and Harmony with Texture

Similar or the same textures that are used within a piece will create a sense of unity. For instance, if the majority of the piece has rougher textures or smoother textures, that creates unity. Sometimes, it can be as simple as the texture of a canvas or paper! It doesn’t even have to be literal texture -- some digital artists add a faux paper texture to their artwork to create that sense of unity through implied texture. However, just like colour, we still want a variety of textures in there in order to create visual interest.

Within more ancient artwork, pieces such as Carved Detail from the Oseberg Waggon from the viking ages show a striking use of textural unity by the whole piece being carved out of wood. Material such as wood or marble can create unity within sculpture, since it creates an overarching texture within the entire piece. While being very literal and unified, the natural differences within the wood create that sense of harmony -- while it’s all wood, it’s not all exactly the same.

Unity and Harmony with Shape and Form

Just like the previous two, using similar or the same shapes and forms within an art piece creates unity. But that doesn’t mean that you should only use spheres or cubes to create an entire piece -- instead, make sure that all the different shapes are drawn similarly to create harmony. For instance, maybe all of your forms have rounded edges, or have super sharp and defined edges.

The Aztec Sun Stone (Calendar Stone), a piece of historical, ancient Aztec art, is a great example of unity through these shapes and forms. Aztec artwork as a whole has a very distinct style -- the majority, if not all of their shapes are very geometric, and they use very precise, sharp edges. However, these forms aren’t all the same, they just use very similar techniques in order to be drawn. Because of their similar but not exactly the same look, they create harmony!

Unity and Harmony with Line

Line tends to be the simplest to work with in terms of all of the elements, and it’s no different here with unity and harmony. Actual line or implied line can be used to create unity, whether you’re working in a specific line art style for your drawing, or if everything is going in the same direction, creating leading lines. When working with actual line, harmony is created through line weighting or line colouration, though line weighting is far more common.

Actual lines are the more common way of creating unity and harmony throughout your artwork, and the manga Bibliomania illustrated by Macchiro is an excellent example of this. They work with very strong, intricate linework -- if you zoom in, you can see that it’s actually broken up in some areas, but that remains consistent throughout the entire manga. That creates unity! However, while the lines are crisp and consistent, they also have some line weighting and variety to them, adding that extra sense of harmony to the entire manga.

Unity and harmony are things you probably already use all the time, but now, you’re aware of it! Sometimes it can be tough to understand how to add those principles into your artwork, but remember that unity and harmony should move throughout your entire piece in order to create something truly cohesive!

I n the history of institutionalized relations between states, the preservation of peace and stability has always been a predominant concern—an ideal that is also enunciated in the Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations. The gap between the idea of peace and the reality of tension and conflict, however, has proven to be a major challenge to the world organization ever since its foundation after World War II—and that challenge was not only due to conflicting political and economic interests. Situations of conflict often arise in a complex setting of historical, social, cultural and political interaction between communities; accordingly, they must be dealt with in a multifaceted and integrative manner. In order to "practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours", as the peoples of the United Nations proclaim in the Preamble to the Charter, we first have to understand each other, or appreciate each other's way of life and socio-cultural identity. This is only possible if we are knowledgeable about our distinct cultures, traditions and value systems. This truth is also reflected in the Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) according to which "ignorance of each other's ways and lives has been a common cause, throughout the history of mankind", of suspicion and mistrust through which their differences have "all too often broken into war".

As an important element of a durable order of peace among nations and peoples, cultural relations have rightly become a preoccupation of modern foreign policy. However, under the conditions of today's global village, with the simultaneity and constant interaction among distant and distinct traditions, social identities and value systems, cultural foreign policy in the conventional diplomatic sense is not enough anymore. With the geopolitical changes that unfolded after the end of the Cold War, and in particular since the fateful events at the beginning of the new millennium, the promotion of intercultural understanding has become more than just an ingredient, as important as it may be, of "peaceful coexistence" among nations. After the end of the bipolar world order, which had divided the world along ideological lines, dialogue among cultures and civilizations has indeed become an existential issue for the international community, a goal which the United Nations General Assembly has identified as such in its resolution in 2001 as the "United Nations Year of Dialogue Among Civilizations"—a decision notably adopted before the events of 11 September of that year.

The new orientation suggested here requires a systemic approach that takes into account the interdependence between the realms of culture, politics and the economy, and makes intercultural relations a defining element of foreign policy, something which the International Progress Organization has been advocating since 1974 in its first international conference on "The Cultural Self-comprehension of Nations". Our concerns were echoed, at the time, in the words of UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, who, in a special message to the conference, emphasized that there is "no future for mankind unless tolerance and understanding between cultures and nations . become the rule rather than the exception".

In our era of global interconnectedness, the assertion of cultural identity can only be envisioned on the basis of mutual respect and the acceptance of diversity. The conventional, often patronizing and propaganda-like approach in the domain of cultural cooperation, a legacy of the colonial era with its unilateral mindset, has essentially failed in the increasingly multi-polar framework of globalization. A culture can only realize itself and reach a state of maturity if it is able to relate to other cultures and life-worlds in a comprehensive and interactive sense, a process one might also characterize by reference to what we have termed the "dialectics of cultural self-comprehension". The strength of a people or nation indeed depends on the ability to interact with other communities in a complex, multidimensional manner, something that also includes the capacity to see oneself through the eyes of the other. Without such interaction, a community will lack the skills it needs to compete and be successful in today's fast-changing global environment. Dealing with differences in a realistic manner -- neither repulsing "the other" nor denying his being different—is in a nation's well understood self-interest. In that regard, political leaders might take advice from Yale Law School Professor Amy Chua's masterful analysis of the history of empires and how their success depended on an inclusive approach and on tolerance for ethnic, cultural and religious differences.

Along those lines, intercultural dialogue must be than a mere corollary of a state's compartmentalized cultural policy. In order to be credible and sustainable, dialogue must be redefined in a comprehensive and integrative sense. It should cover the entire spectrum of the life of a community, and not only aspects of high culture. If dialogue is to be relevant, it cannot be conducted in an abstract manner—in a kind of l'art pour l'art attitude that isolates issues of cultural and civilizational identity from the realms of politics and the economy.

There are three fundamental maxims that highlight the integrative approach; the first two are also implicit in the Millennium Declaration which the UN General Assembly adopted on 8 September 2000:

• Dialogue without addressing issues of social justice is artificial and ultimately meaningless.
• Dialogue without a commitment to peace is a contradiction in itself. In particular, civilizations cannot be allied if the exponents of one civilization wage war against exponents of another civilization. Furthermore, in the twenty-first century, there must be no wars with civilizational undertones. Such conflicts poison the intercultural climate not only globally but at the regional and domestic levels as well, thereby eroding the very foundations of multicultural societies and threatening the long-term stability of states.
• One cannot preach cultural dialogue internationally and reject the very notion of multiculturalism domestically. Consistency in the implementation of a policy of dialogue is absolutely essential for the integrative approach.

In view of the experiences in the 10 years since the UN initially highlighted the goal of a dialogue among civilizations, a number of practical measures may be considered in the fields of education, politics, diplomacy, sports and tourism that follow from a comprehensive and integrative approach, and that will be required to make dialogue a meaningful and relevant factor of international relations. We can mention here only a few such measures:

In education: under the auspices of UNESCO, the adaptation of domestic curricula and school textbooks to today's multicultural realities should continue in a coordinated manner, and cultural stereotyping should be completely eliminated from national curricula. Educational systems should, as far as possible, reflect the actual diversity in terms of cultures and religions. Wherever possible, studies abroad should be facilitated and integrated into standard curricula by way of academic exchange programmes.

In the field of sports: the transnational dimension of modern mass spectator sports such as football should be properly reflected and made use of in terms of the potential for overcoming a narrow-minded perception of "the other" as adversary. It is strangely inconsistent and totally unacceptable that, while a national team comprises players of different cultures, ethnicities or races, the national fans of that very team indulge in nationalist enemy stereotypes and differences. One cannot be a cosmopolitan in the worldwide engage in chauvinistic acts.

In international tourism: the potential of today's global travel industry, an essential factor of income for many countries especially in the developing world, should be fully used in terms of the opportunity it provides for intercultural encounters and knowledge. In that regard, the impact of certain practices of mass tourism should be carefully assessed—such as exporting one's local conditions to distant places without due consideration of the compatibility of lifestyles. Tourism should not create animosities and nurture mutual prejudices, but should help to overcome them.

In domestic politics: countries whose leaders have begun to question, or even reject outright, the rationale of multiculturalism may find it useful to study the actual experience with multicultural societies in other parts of the world, especially in post-colonial countries. Traditionally monocultural societies in the industrialized world that have become multicultural due to migration and economic globalization can learn from societies in states that were originally established on a multicultural basis. Such an exchange of intercultural experiences could play a constructive role in today's increasingly interconnected world, especially as regards the reduction of tensions within countries. The phasing out of racial, religious or ethnic profiling by immigration authorities will be another important contribution from the domestic side to an integrative approach to intercultural dialogue.

In the field of international law: the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions should be implemented systematically and in all its aspects. It is to be hoped that those major industrialized states that have not yet acceded to or ratified the convention will do so in the near future. According to the integrative approach which we are advocating here, support for a global dialogue among civilizations cannot be delinked from the commitment to interculturality as defined in Article 4(8) of the Convention—in the sense of "existence and equitable interaction of diverse cultures and the possibility of generating shared cultural expressions through dialogue and mutual respect".

In the domain of the internet and new social media: the last decades' rapid development of information technology that has enabled entirely new forms of interactive communication has also transformed, or is about to transform, societies and state systems. One may fairly assume that the interconnectivity and interactivity within today's global information village—not to speak of the wealth of information and educational material that has become available to users almost instantly—will gradually contribute to the normalization of cultural diversity in the eyes of the global public, and foster a more mature and lasting acceptance of differences. One cannot be a cosmopolitan in the worldwide web and a chauvinist at home.

The rationale behind measures to promote intercultural dialogue is that a sustainable order of peace requires a holistic approach that integrates all areas of global interaction, a purpose for which the UN, due to its universal and inclusive character, is ideally suited. In this era of ever increasing interdependence among people, and peoples of distinct cultural and religious identities, dealing with differences has itself become a cultural technique and, more than that, a skill that is indispensable for the prosperity and success of each and every community. The nations that are publicly committed to partnership and dialogue among civilizations must live up to this challenge. They should make clear that no state or people, as influential or powerful as they may be, can use the paradigm of dialogue to justify a strategy or policy of cultural superiority. The threat of culture wars and conflicts due to civilizational exceptionalism must be ended once and for all. The unity of mankind can only be preserved, and peace can only be maintained through the recognition of the diversity of the human race with all that this entails in terms of an integrated policy of economic, social and cultural cooperation.

Unity in Art

Unity (also called harmony) is an important principle of design that gives the artwork a sense of cohesion or coherence. It is the wholeness or completeness of a picture. Unity and harmony in art are used by artists to tie a composition together and help the composition make sense as a whole piece of art.

The principles of design are ways to organize the elements of art (line, shape, color, form, space, value, texture) to create a wide range of effects. To create unity or harmony in art, artists arrange the similar components and elements of art to create consistency. Unity or harmony can also be created by merging the form and the meaning of the artwork together.

Unity and variety in art are often discussed together, because ultimately an artwork must contain both unity and variety to be a successful work of art, and there must be balance between the two.

Unity, Harmony, and Variety – Principles of Art

That same person, however, may struggle to verbalize the differences between some of the principles of art. Two specific principles – unity and harmony , come to mind. The principles of art can create a feeling about an artwork and feelings are difficult to quantify.

This article explores three of the principles of art. These three principles are best understood as a group since they are related. The first two, previously mentioned, are harmony and unity. The third is called variety .

Harmony and Variety in Art

Harmony is the principle of art that creates cohesiveness by stressing the similarities of separate but related parts.

One should note that harmony is not the same as unity. Harmony does, however, enhance unity in a work of art. Specifically, harmony uses the elements of art (color, line, shape, form, value, space, texture) as a vehicle to create a sense of togetherness amongst otherwise separate parts.

A set of colors that relate according to a specific scheme creates harmony.

Likewise, a uniform texture of brush strokes across the surface of a canvas creates harmony.

Another way to guarantee harmony is to choose compositional components that are similar in shape and contour. For example, a composition that utilizes only curvy shapes will have more harmony than a similar composition that includes both curvy and geometric shapes. The parts of the image below are in harmony because every contour is a curve.

Even a narrowed range of value  can contribute to harmony in a work of art.

For many people, performing the same task or following the same routine over and over again leads to boredom. That is why vacations are such a pleasure. A vacation is an interruption of life’s routines. Some people are active when on vacation while others do nothing at all. One thing is certain – vacations look different than the routines they interrupt. Vacations are a measured dose of variety in a person’s life. Art needs variety also.

All harmony and no variety is boring.  A favorite professor of mine used to say, “Variety is the spice of life”. He was not life-coaching. He was talking about art.

Variety is the principle of art that adds interest to an artwork.

Variety works through juxtaposition and contrast. When an artist places different visual elements next to one another, he/she is using variety. Straight lines next to curvy lines add variety. Organic shapes among geometric shapes add variety. Bright colors next to dull colors add variety.

Note: If an artist uses variety to draw the viewers attention to a specific area in a composition then variety morphs into emphasis , also a principle of art. Principles of art bleed into one another. They overlap. Harmony and variety are really opposite expressions of the same nebulous concept. To emphasize one is to de-emphasize the other. Harmony and variety play tug-of-war in a composition. Too much harmony is boring while too much variety is aimless and incomprehensible.

A personal favorite is to make a drawing by hatching with only straight lines. Straight lines are less complex than curvilinear lines and will unify a composition.

Look at the image below. The simplicity of the line-type and the lack of color are simplifications of the original reference. Much of the visual information has been intentionally left out. The result is a unified image.

Repetition – Repetition within a composition will guarantee a feeling of unity. Tessellations are an obvious example of how repetition unifies a composition. A tessellation is an arrangement of shapes that fit together in a repeated pattern without gaps.

Repetition can also unify an entire series of artworks, like a group of paintings. A certain shape, object or texture that is repeated among a group of paintings acts as a motif, helping each painting to feel as though it is part of a greater whole.

Proximity – Proximity refers to the closeness of different components in a work of art. By placing parts close together, the mind is able to see the parts as one thing, a mass.

Negative space is the space between elements in a work of art. It can refer to the “empty spaces” within a drawing or painting. The more limited the negative space, the more unified the areas of a composition may feel.

The tessellation below depends on both repetition and proximity, resulting in a highly unified image. Due to the complete lack of negative space, the repeated bird shapes feel like one pattern.

This caused serious Hindu-Muslim disturbances in Salem, Tamil Nadu. However it believed that these riots occurred as the Hindus objected to the construction of a mosque on the path of a Hindu religious procession.

• 1927 Nagpur Riots

These were a series of riots that took place in different cities during 1920s between the Hindu and Muslim groups.

• 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

It said that these riots carried out to avenge the death of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who shot at by her Sikh bodyguards.

These were a series of violent riots between Hindus and Muslims. The riots that took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut continued for around 3 months from March to June 1987. Around 350 people were killed during these riots.

• 1990 Hyderabad Riots

These riots occurred in Hyderabad in the year 1990 and resulted in the killing of around 200-300 innocent people. It also left thousands of people injured.

• 2013 Muzaffarnagar Riots

The riots took place between Hindus and Muslims in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district. The clashes continued for almost 2 months and also resulted in taking lives of around 60 people.

These riots occurred in the Indian city of Moradabad during August-November 1980. It all began when a group of Muslims threw stones at the police as they refused to remove a pig from the Idgah. The police fired back and it resulted in the killing of several people.

• 1989 Bhagalpur Violence

The 1989 Bhagalpur riots occurred between Hindus and Muslims in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district. These began in October 1989 and continued for two months. Not only Bhagalpur, around 250 nearby villages got affected by the violence caused due to these riots. More than 1,000 people killed and as many as 50,000 displaced during these two months.

• 1992-93 Bombay Riots

The riots that took place in December 1992 and January 1993 took the lives of around 900 people. These said to reaction to the 1992 Babri Masjid Demolition in Ayodhya.

• 2002 Gujarat Riots

The burning of train that led to the death of 58 Hindu pilgrims caused these riots. The train returning from Ayodhya that carried karsevaks burned at Godhra station. These riots led to the deaths of around 254 Hindus and as many as 790 Muslims. Near about 2,500 people injured and 223 reported missing.

• 2013 Canning riots

These riots took place between the Bengali Muslims and Bengali Hindus in West Bengal in February 2013. Therefore the outbreak happened after the murder of a Muslim clerk by unidentified attackers. Muslims burned down Hindu homes in Goladogra, Gopalpur, Herobhanga and Naliakhali villages in the Canning police station area.

Apart from these, 1857 Bharuch Riots, 1927 Nagpur Riots, 1969 Gujarat Riots, 1984 Sikh Riots, 1984 Bhiwandi Riots, 1985 Gujarat Riots, 1989 Meerut Communal Riots, 1990 Hyderabad Riots, 2002 Gujarat Riots, 2006 Vadodra Riots and 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots also caused mass destruction and disturbed the communal harmony of the country.

India is home to people from different religions and castes. People belonging to different ethnic groups and religions live here in harmony with each other. At workplaces, in schools, while doing business dealings people from different backgrounds come together and work/study together. A harmonious atmosphere maintained at such places. However, there have been times when there have been problems due to religious differences among citizens of our country. Here is how our government binds the citizens in unity and how they have fallen apart at various points.

Secularism Binds People

With the 42 nd Amendment of the Indian Constitution enacted back in 1976, the Preamble to the Constitution stated that India is a secular nation. The country does not follow any official state religion. The laws require the state and its institutions to accept and respect all the religions. Each individual in the country is free to choose his religion and change it at any time. Treating all the religions equally and giving freedom to choose one’s religion is a way to ensure communal harmony in the country.

Instances of Communal Riots

While the Constitution of the country imbued with the spirit to maintain communal harmony, the same has disrupted many a times. Therefore here are some instances of communal riots in India:

• 1857 Bharuch Riots

These riots occurred between the Bohra Muslims and Parsis in May 1857. The riots broke out as some Muslims accused Bejonji Sheriaiji Bharucha, a Parsi of desecrating a mosque. Five days later as many as 200 Muslims gathered together and attacked Dastur Kamdin Dar-e Mihr, a fire temple and brutally murdered its High Priest.

• 1969 Gujarat Riots

This refers to the riots between Hindus and Muslims during September-October 1969 in Gujarat. This was the first major communal violence in Gujarat that involved looting and massacre on a wide scale. Near about 660 people killed and 1074 injured during these riots.

Also known as the 1984 Sikh Massacre, these were a series of attacks against the Sikhs in India. These riots said to carried out by agitated mobs in reaction to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s murder by her Sikh bodyguards. Around 2800 people across the country killed during these riots of which approximately 2100 were from Delhi.

• 1984 Bhiwandi Riots

These riots took place in and around Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi town in the year 1984. As many as 278 people killed and more than 1000 injured during the Bhiwandi riots. The outbreak occurred when a saffron flag placed on the top of a mosque.

• 1985 Gujarat Riots

These riots started in February 1985 and continued for almost 9 months that is until October. It believed that this violence invoked by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in an attempt to defame the ruling government. This was initially an intra Hindu caste issue owing to the reservation policy. However, gradually it turned into Hindu-Muslim communal riots.

• 2006 Vadodara Riots

Also referred to as the 2006 Dargah Riots, these occurred in May 2006 in Vadodara, Gujarat. However the riots were a result of the municipal council’s decision to remove the Sufi saint Syed Chishti Rashid Uddin’s dargah. It said that the police targeted Muslims during this incident. Incidents of Hindu-Muslim clashes reported in several areas during these riots.

National Unity Day is an annual event celebrated on 31 October in India. This Day was initiated by the Government of India in 2014 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhhai Patel . He was the first Home Minister as well as the first Deputy Prime Minister of India.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is known as the “Iron Man of India.” Unity is the vibe that people share with each other to stay together despite any differences.

The General Assembly today (6 Jun) elected by acclamation Philemon Yang, former Prime Minister of Cameroon, President for its seventy-ninth session which gets underway in September.

President-elect Yang also served as the Chairperson of the Panel of Eminent Africans of the African Union (AU).

In his acceptance speech, Yang said, “our era is characterized, unfortunately, by blatant inequalities, selfishness, competition for power and diverse interests alongside powerful centrifugal forces which threaten the cohesion and solidarity of humanity. Geopolitical and geostrategic tensions continue to fuel distrust among states. And I intensify an unstoppable arms race - including in space, an exponential increase in military budgets, the sophistication of military doctrines and rules of engagement on the ground, including the possibility of threat of the use of nuclear weapons, are the frightening realities of the world in which we live today.”

Yang remarked that the General Assembly “is the most appropriate forum where Member States and all their diversity are called upon to express in freedom, their concerns, their proposals, their opportunities.”

In other words, he said, “the challenges and the hopes of the various nations of the world. And thus, the General Assembly is the highest Chamber of representation for deliberations where all states can debate, not fight.”

The President Elect said, “beyond our differences and our diversity, we should act together to promote peace, ensure that there's no war, preventing disasters in a spirit of unity. Let's act for sustainable development, shared prosperity, harmony with nature, an environment where abundant resources could be ensured be consumed with moderation and wisdom.”

At an informal dialogue with Assembly members in May, then candidate Yang, highlighted his theme for the 79th session as “unity in diversity.”

Speaking to journalists following the elections, he said, “I am convinced that through dialogue, through consensus, talking together and looking to the future together, we can solve problems.”

The 79th session of the General Assembly will convene on 10 September, with the body’s high-level general debate starting on 24 September 2024.
