A Dream Vacation in the Maldives

by Emily Cass | Mar 27, 2017 | Asia , Most Popular | 14 comments

A Dream Vacation in the Maldives

Where does one even begin to explain the beauty of somewhere like the Maldives? No words, pictures or bragging can do it justice, but let me try…

The Maldives are a world away from it all . Pure paradise, a little piece of heaven , positively   breathtaking  and by far a dream come true.

We arrived at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (Male) and from the moment we stepped out of the airport, we knew we were in for a treat. Right before our eyes was the most magnificent turquoise water. It was so clear I’m sure you could see your reflection. For once, I wouldn’t mind if our return flight was delayed.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Setting foot in the Maldives has always been high on our bucket list, in fact, it’s been a dream for years. Now, after 2.5 years of continuous travel, it was finally our turn to wake up to the sound and the sight of the Indian Ocean.

For the next 5 days, we would call Sun Aqua Vilu Reef “home”. A barefoot, no stress, outrageously beautiful island.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef is found on Meedhuffushi Island, an intimate jewel in the Maldives’ South Nilandhe Atoll. The island can be reached by seaplane 35-40 minutes from Male.

Maldives

For the entire duration of the flight, we couldn’t take our eyes off the sights below. It was indescribable. 1,192 coral islands lay scattered throughout the ocean with every shade of blue and green imaginable. We were giddy in our seats, the smiles couldn’t be wider and the anticipation to reach the resort was at an all-time high. This was one flight that could have lasted forever!

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

The second our seaplane hit the water we couldn’t wait to start exploring. We’re here! Smiling faces greeted us from the jetty and an individual staff member was allocated to each guest. How’s that for service? Shammun, you rock.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

During the 4 nights, we were very fortunate to experience 2 different rooms and we can safely say we absolutely loved them both. Predominately the views and all the space!

The first room was the  Sun Aqua Pool Villa. We slide the key in the lock, opened the door and our gasp was immediate. Surely this isn’t real life. Ocean views with our own private pool, a giant swing, an outdoor bathroom/bathtub and a giant bed facing the ocean. Could we ask for anything else? We were two snap-happy, very relaxed globetrotters.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Just when we think it couldn’t get any better, we were moved to a Sunset Reef Villa . Holy Smokes! When you think of the Maldives, your mind is immediately drawn to the houses on stilts, with the ocean as your front door. Panoramic ocean views, open space, the ocean so close you can feel the salt in your hair and a private balcony with direct access to the lagoon. Morning, noon and night we were in the water lapping up these incredible moments.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

The only thing we advise… don’t jump from your balcony kids, it’s shallow and you will hurt yourself. Ouch…

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Activities or Relaxation?

Eat, sleep, swim, relax, breathe (this is very important) – repeat.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

If you come to the Maldives and choose to do nothing but that, you won’t be disappointed. However, for adventurous travellers, there is still plenty to do to keep you entertained.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

There’s a huge variety of water sports, tennis/volleyball courts, boat trips, live music entertainment, a gym, paddle-boarding and why not a sunset fishing trip to catch your next meal? We managed to catch 12 fish between the two of us. Perhaps we need to take this fishing thing a little more seriously?!? Food tastes so much better when you work for it!

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Last but not least, let me touch on the subject of snorkelling. It was out of this world. Surrounding the resort is a protected reef with over 100 different species of fish. The water is outrageously clear and the colours of the fish are just stunning. I honestly didn’t think it was possible to have water this transparent.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Room Service Anyone?

Apart from enjoying a delicious breakfast buffet with a stunning setting and exchanging “wow” every second sentence, ordering room service was just a whole lot of “yes”. Let’s just add to the luxury, shall we?

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Considering room service at hotels is usually 10x the regular price, it was surprising to see the cost of a room service meal was cheaper than eating at the buffet, pool bar or at the fine dining restaurant. This made for an easy decision each evening during sunset to dial the famous “In Villa Dining” and request our favourite bottle of rosé and maybe the occasional pizza. Ah, just reliving this makes me smile. This setting is just too much to handle!

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

When we were tired of the buffet (if that’s even possible) and looking for something a little more romantic, we ate at the “Well Done” restaurant located directly on the sand right against the water. The setting was just perfect and the meals were tasty (if maybe a little pricey, but hey, remember you are in the Maldives).

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Top tips to get the most out of your stay

  • Allow 3/4 of a day to reach the resort. The time from your international flight landing + the seaplane/boat transfer will take up a good chunk of the day. We landed at 9:00 am and didn’t reach the resort until 2:30 pm. It’s the price you pay to stay somewhere so remote and wonderful.
  • If something isn’t right, ASK . The staff WILL fix it. If not then and there, within a very short period of time.
  • If you’re staying in a Beach Villa, request one facing the lagoon side. We felt the view was better.
  • If you plan to drink a lot of cocktails, be sure to look at the all-inclusive option. It will save you some dosh.
  • Honestly, the food was hit & miss but if you ask for something fresh, it will be given to you. No questions asked.
  • Snorkel to your little heart’s content. Jump in the water from Entry Point 1.

Would we recommend this hotel?

Absolutely. I wish we never had to leave. Sun Aqua felt like a home away from home and by the end of the 5 days we felt like a family with all the friendly staff members. They knew our names, our drink orders and our likes and dislikes. We’re already jealous of anyone that gets to set foot in this resort. Please do us a favour and when you pack, pack us with you! And don’t forget your wallet, you  may need it ;).

Thank you for having us Sun Aqua Vilu Reef!

250 Words Essay on Maldives

The Maldives is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. It is known for its clear blue waters, white sandy beaches, and rich sea life. The country is made up of more than a thousand small islands. Many people visit the Maldives for vacations, especially for the beautiful views and water sports.

The Maldives is the smallest country in Asia when you look at how much land it has. Most of its islands are very low, lying less than one meter above sea level. This makes the Maldives very sensitive to the rising sea levels caused by climate change.

The culture of the Maldives is influenced by the sea. Fishing is a big part of life there. The people also have their own language called Dhivehi and they celebrate many festivals that are unique to their islands.

The main way the Maldives makes money is through tourism. People from all over the world come to stay in resorts and enjoy the natural beauty. Fishing is also important for the economy, and the Maldives is famous for its tuna fish.

Environment

In conclusion, the Maldives is a special place with beautiful islands, a unique culture, and a strong connection to the ocean. It’s important to protect this country for future generations to enjoy.

500 Words Essay on Maldives

The Maldives is a country made up of many small islands in the Indian Ocean. It is known for its clear blue waters, white sandy beaches, and beautiful underwater life. The Maldives is near the southern part of India and Sri Lanka. This country is special because it is made up of about 1,200 islands, but people only live on about 200 of them.

Geography and Climate

Underwater beauty.

One of the main reasons people visit the Maldives is to see the amazing life under the sea. The coral reefs there are home to many kinds of fish, turtles, and other sea creatures. Snorkeling and scuba diving are popular activities because they let people get close to the colorful coral and fish in a natural setting.

Culture and People

The people of the Maldives have their own language called Dhivehi and their culture has been influenced by the sea. Fishing is a big part of their life because the ocean is so important to them. The Maldives also has a mix of cultures, including influences from Africa, Arabia, and Asia, because of the many sailors who visited the islands long ago.

The Maldives faces some big challenges. Because the islands are so close to sea level, they could be covered by water if the sea rises too much. This is a big worry for the people who live there. Also, keeping the environment clean and safe is a challenge with so many visitors coming to the islands.

In conclusion, the Maldives is a country with stunning beaches, a rich underwater world, and a unique culture. It is a favorite place for people who want to relax and enjoy nature. But, it is important to remember that this beautiful place needs to be taken care of so that it can be enjoyed by future generations. The Maldives shows us the beauty of our planet and also reminds us of the need to protect such wonderful places.

These 10 Underrated Florida Beach Towns Are A Great Alternative To The Keys

10 charming small towns near tucson, arizona, 10 state parks in washington with scenic hikes.

Picture it: Calm, crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, and a personal hut that sits just over the water so that in the mornings, a sunrise swim is only steps away. Pair that with a soft breeze that only the ocean can produce and the freshest seafood imaginable for dinner each night, and suddenly, the Maldives is created.

This grouping of islands (about 1,200 in total) has been an overwhelmingly popular destination for both celebrities and those who have the money to afford a vacation there. In recent years, however, it hasn't just been for the wealthy - many are discovering the sheer bliss that comes with an island vacation unlike any other. Still wondering why it's such a dream destination? Here's why it will likely always be a favorite.

Life Is Simple

A common trend when visiting the Maldives is that it feels like time slows down here. Not only do travelers have the luxury to partake in activities at their own pace but if they choose not to, then they could simply spend an entire day lounging by the oceanside.

If they're staying at a resort, there's a number of different things they can choose from to pass the time, including:

  • Shopping in Malé
  • Scuba diving
  • Sightseeing tours
  • Beachcombing
  • Visiting the fish markets
  • Going on historic tours

With so many colorful reefs surrounding these islands, there's plenty of life to explore underwater as well as above the water. When staying at a luxury hut, guests may even have the chance to see some of the local marine life swimming around their accommodations as well!

A Life Of True Luxury

It comes at a cost but that cost is undeniably worth it. Resorts in the Maldives can come with anything from swimming pools within the ocean to resorts that are literally right on the beach, only steps away from the water. There, the lines are blurred between a hotel and the island itself, and, more often than not, visitors feel as though they're sleeping in the open with the ocean air to soothe them to sleep.

The Six Senses Laamu resort features 97 sustainable Maldive-style villas that are literally built to hover just over the water. Visitors have access to multiple beaches - as well as the mainland island - via wooden dock bridges that extend across the Indian Ocean. There, visitors can snorkel or surf, thanks to calm waters on one side of the island and breaking waves on the other. Although the island on which this resort is located is small, it's not lacking in scenery as much of it is covered with lush vegetation. There's just as much wildlife to see on a hike through the forest as there is during a snorkeling excursion offshore, and to say it's magical would be an understatement. While this is only one resort, a majority of the other Maldives resorts offer similar experiences.

The Food Is Unparalleled

The great thing about booking a resort in the Maldives is that guests will often get a meal credit. This is entirely worth it simply because of the fact that the food on these islands is second to none ; there are few islands that can compare with the dishes produced by chefs in this location. With a base of fresh, local ingredients and a blending of cuisine styles, the meals served at each resort will always vary based on the time of the year and the catch of the day.

Additionally, visitors have the option to explore the local Maldives food scene outside of the resort, which is highly recommended. A trip to the fish market will result in plenty of fresh, exotic seafood options, any of which can be cooked up to perfection. Visitors will find anything from fresh seafood curry to Maldivian lobster, which is often so fresh that's it's cooked in front of diners - there's a lot of pride when it comes to the food that comes straight from the ocean surrounding. Sweet dishes, such as Saagu Bondibai, make use of coconut milk and condensed milk to create a creamy, decadent bite that travelers should not miss on their Maldives trip.

While much of the cuisine is influenced by local ingredients, it's also influenced by the tropical island lifestyle that Maldivian locals so love. The island's fruits and vegetables are just as exotic as its flavors; something such as cassava can be cooked down and used in a dessert that's sweet and satisfying, while pumpkin and sweet potato are used in savory dishes.

5 Reasons to Visit the Maldives

Last Updated on November 3, 2021

One of our absolute dream destinations, the Maldives are an exotic and beautiful collection of islands located right in the Indian Ocean. Over one thousand islands make up the nation, creating isolated and private destinations for travelers. Deservedly, the Maldives are listed as one of the 1,000 places to visit before you die . For many couples, the Maldives are the ultimate honeymoon destination, or just a serene place to go to get away from it all and splurge on a luxurious resort. In this article, you find the top five reasons why you need to visit the Maldives at least once in your lifetime, plus the best places to stay in the Maldives for budget, mid-range and luxury travelers.

Table of Contents

Five reasons why you need to visit the Maldives

The breathtaking scenery.

Each of the many islands that make up the Maldives is located in the heart of the Indian Ocean and offers some remarkable views. Beautiful peaks on the interior of the islands and stunning sandy shorelines lined with palm trees are just a few of the scenic memories you can make in the Maldives. Most travelers claim that the best views occur right as the sun sets each night over the ocean, ideally while you have a cold drink in your hand.

Experience pure luxury

While there are a few budget accommodation options in the Maldives (see below for some great budget-friendly places), most of the resorts are incredibly upscale and luxurious. And that’s what most people want when they visit the Maldives: pure luxury. Resorts have spacious suites, exclusive guest patios and butler service. Expect to find fitness facilities, spas and onsite dining in every resort in the country. Staying in an overwater bungalow is a dream for many people, and there’s no better place than the Maldives to make this dream come true.

Delicious Dining

Guests in the Maldives have three options for dining. They can enjoy upscale international fare in the resorts, affordable local meals in the rural areas or dining in the cities of Male and Addu. Most visitors stick to the delicious food served in the resorts, but the dining in Male is much more affordable and can be a great way to try local favorites like riha curry and spicy fish cakes called kulhi borkibaa.

If you are treating yourself to a stay in a luxurious resort, you can expect divine dining every day of your stay – and don’t worry, you won’t be eating regional dishes every day: the resorts are known for their exquisite cooking from all over the world.

Scuba diving

One of the most popular pastimes in the Maldives is scuba diving. The sheer number of atolls makes it ideal for scuba diving, but also snorkeling, among the coral and the native marine life. Compared to other exotic destinations, scuba diving in the Maldives is incredibly safe as well. SUP has become an increasingly popular activity to enjoy while on holiday, and most of the resorts also offer daily yoga classes. You might also be interested in kayaking and canoeing – don’t forget to pack your waterproof camera!

Privacy and Seclusion

Although almost every visitor who arrives in the Maldives will pass through the airport in the capital city of Male, most of the resorts and accommodations are located on nearby islands. Since there are well over 1,000 islands that make up the country, resorts are often located on private islands accessible exclusively to guests and staff. If you want to see more than just one island when you visit the Maldives, you can break up your stay into two parts and stay on two different islands.

How to visit the Maldives

How to get to the maldives.

The Maldives are made up of 1,192 coral islands, which are grouped into 26 coral atolls. 200 of the islands are inhabited, and there are another 154 islands which have tourist resorts on them. Most of the resort islands have only one resort, so you’ll basically have an island to yourself.

The island nation’s only international airport is in Male, the capital. From there, you will connect onto a small sea plane to reach your resort island.

Male has direct connections to Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong and a few other hubs. To find the cheapest flights to the Maldives, I recommend using flight aggregators such as Expedia, OneTravel or Google Flights.

Check for a flight & hotel combo when you visit the Maldives, which can save you hundreds of dollars! Expedia is a good place to start your search.

Sea planes & ferries

From the main airport, you will take a sea plane to the island your resort is on. Take this additional cost into consideration – these sea plane rides are NOT cheap. Most resorts arrange the seaplane transfer for their guests.

If you are planning to visit the Maldives on a budget, choose an island that is closer to Male, so that you can reach it by ferry, which is much cheaper.

Do you need a visa for the Maldives?

The Maldives issue a free 30-day visa on arrival at the airport. Double check that your passport is valid for a minimum of six months from the date of entry. You may need to show proof of a pre-paid hotel booking and a return ticket.

My Trip To Maldives

essay on dream destination maldives

Every year I make it my goal to travel to an exotic location and completely disconnect to fully reconnect with myself by immersing with the culture and further expanding my mind. In 2016 I picked the beautiful Maldive Islands to visit. I have been thinking about going to Maldives since 2012 and even talked about it on my social media several times as my dream destination. In August 2016 the trip manifested into my reality and the experience truly changed my life.

Here are several of my posts speaking my experience into existence. Mind you, when I said I wanted to be there, it wasn’t a priority for me since I was traveling to other places across the world. The idea of going to Maldives was more of a “one day” talk. However, it was on my mental radar, which is so crucial when you want to have an experience manifest into your reality. My vibration was aligned with the belief that I will be there soon, so it manifested in due time with absolute ease. I can truly say that I have experienced my thoughts become my reality so many times, but I’ll leave the details of that for another post.

Before we go any further into my experience of Maldives, let me share some information with you so that you can have a better undertanding of what this little piece of heaven on earth is all about. After I give you some insight and research that I have done before I went, I will get into the depths of my experience there.

The beautiful Maldives consists of 1190 tiny islands scattered across the Indian Ocean. Maldives is located next to India and Sir Lanka.

Out of the 1190 islands in Maldives, only 185 of these islands are inhabited, while the others are used largely for tourism (90 resorts) and agriculture. The atolls are composed of live coral reefs and sand bars perched atop a 960km submarine ridge, while the land features lush tropical vegetation with abundant local coconut palms. With an average ground level of 1.5m above sea level, the Maldives is by far the lowest country on earth and as such has a very fragile ecosystem. The capital and largest city of the Maldives is Male. Maldives waters are thriving with whales and dolphins. At any given time of the year, there are 10 to 12 different species of whales and dolphins that call the coral reefs of the Maldives home.

After my research of Maldives and discovering that there were 90 resorts, I had to find the one that I would explore during my stay. I decided that I was going to stay at Baros Resort because of its beauty, privacy, and adventure.

After discovering the island that I was going to explore during my stay, I prepared for my long trip to Maldives, which was approximately 20hrs and 45minutes from San Diego, California to Male, Maldives. I packed up and headed for the airport to go on this beautiful journey to the other side of the world.

Knowing that I was going to be flying for 20hrs and 45mins, I brought several books with me. I love reading, so I utilized my travel time to go through a few books.

After my long trip, I finally made it to Male, Maldives.

When you first get to Maldives, you land in the main city called Male. Once you get to the Male International Airport, the resort sends a representative with a boat to escort you to your designated island. The boat ride from the airport to the resort was about 20mintues. During the ride I was offered a clean towel and water to relax. Upon approaching the deck of the resort, I noticed 6 hotel staff waving and ready to welcome me. It was such a warm welcome. I was quickly introduced to my butler Ahmad who was going to be there to guide me through my stay. Ahmad was very friendly and quickly started giving me insight on the resort. I did arrive in the evening, so I was a bit jet-lagged. I was taken to my water villa that had the view of the sunset from the back and sunrise from the front. It was soothing to hear the water underneath the villa as I was walking to my room. When I got to my room, I found a beautiful welcome note from the staff. After unpacking and unwinding from my travel, I ordered room service.

The next morning I felt rejuvenated and even woke up to the beautiful sound of the water below the villa.

After taking in the beautiful sunrise, I felt completely at peace and connected to the source energy. I sat down on the couch and just started counting my blessings. The thing I realized while being in complete silence is how clear your thoughts become. I felt a deep gratitude for being alive and experiencing what my thoughts can manifest. After about 1 hour of introspection and meditation, my breakfast arrived.

During my trip I had several adventures on my itinerary. I was going to be getting a special massage called the ‘Third Eye Massage’ also known as the Shirodhara Head Massage. I also had snorkeling and island events to attend. Keep in mind that the island is so small so most of what you’ll be doing will have a lot to do with relaxation and sometimes you’ll find yourself laying next to the water for hours.

Before I get into the list of incredible things I did while on the island, let me talk a little bit more about the food, the people, and the environment. Baros Resort is simply breathtaking. The island provided so many different types of food that it was easy to find something that fits into anyone’s diet. Since Maldives is almost 99% sea, it is not surprising that fish (mainly tuna) is the most important staple of the Maldivian diet. The cuisine found in the island is a mix of Arabic, Indian, Sri Lankan and Oriental influences. The resort also had a diverse international menu as well as traditional Maldivian dishes. Coconuts are a major part of many dishes in Maldives and can be served in grated form, as milk or as coconut oil to cook food with. I loved the clear blue water and white sand that surrounded the island. Also I loved the lush green palm trees and exotic plants that were everywhere. There were exotic birds, lizards, and even insects. The staff on the island were so nice and welcoming. They constantly made me feel at home. The whole island was just incredible.

One of the exciting part of my trip was getting the Third Eye Therapy. At the spa I received a massage treatment called Shirodhara Head massage. This massage originated in India and is sometimes referred to as the  Third Eye Therapy.  The massage consists of warm only dripping on the center of your eyebrow for 30mins. The massage is supposed to promote balance, intuition, and relaxation. I felt myself getting deeper into a trance. The soothing sound of the music and the warm oil stimulated complete bliss. I believe I was awake as I was entering into Alpha brainwave. This is a state of creating and connecting with the unlimited source. My visions were detailed and clearer. The whole stay did stimulate a deep meditative state since I was spending time in nature and in the water everyday. This massage was the icing on the cake. I felt happy, whole, and very much connected.

Another beautiful experience I had was snorkeling on the island. Maldives is known for its reefs and the world of beauty that roams under the water. I enjoyed connecting with all the sea life. When I initially went into the water I saw a baby shark swimming around and got scared. The marine biologist that was with me told me to explore and connect instead of being scared, because sharks are actually friendly. I trusted her guidance and went far into the sea. I felt energized throughout the experience. I felt like I entered a whole new world. The colors, beauty, and vibrancy of the sea life was magnificent.

My trip to Maldives was incredible. I honestly didn’t want to leave, but my time to return to San Diego was fast approaching. Going on this kind of trip really taught me the importance of isolation and deep relaxation. Getting away from everything to reconnect with yourself truly does something magnificent to you. During my stay at Baros Maldives I experienced a lot of introspection. Being surrounded by water and being in silence is transformational. Also being away from everything and everyone, you start to think much more deeply and clearly. I felt the union between my inner voice and my thoughts. Understanding the power of myself meant being one with my inner voice. I also started to really get clear by eliminating the excess mind chatter and finding that inner place of oneness with self. I felt loved, happy, and energized. I do believe being in nature naturally does this to you. You don’t necessarily have to be in Maldives to get this experience. However, you have to connect with the frequency of the earth and get out of the busy city life and into nature often. I commit myself to 1hr of nature daily by being surrounded by water, plants, mountains, and animals. It’s pure bliss for me. I hope this gave you some insight about Maldives. With the power of your mind, you can go anywhere. Hope you get to experience this heaven on earth soon.

The Maldives: A Paradise on Earth for Your Next Dream Vacation

When is the Best Time to Visit?

The best time to visit the Maldives is between November and April, during the dry season. During this time, the weather is generally dry, sunny, and warm, with low humidity and calm seas, making it ideal for water sports, diving, and beach activities . However, it is also the peak tourist season, and prices for flights and accommodations can be higher.

The rainy season in the Maldives typically runs from May to October, with a higher chance of rainfall, storms, and rough seas. It is generally not the best time to visit the Maldives as it can be very wet and humid.

Visiting during the off-season can offer some advantages, such as lower prices, fewer tourists, and excellent surfing conditions. So, the rainy season could be a good option if you don’t mind the rain and are looking for a less expensive and crowded time to visit .

Visa Requirements

Luckily, there are no visa requirements for tourists visiting the Maldives. No matter where you’re visiting from, all tourists will be issued a visa on arrival, free of charge. Tourists from most countries will be issued a 30-day visa, and tourists from Russia and India will be given a 90-day visa.

Even though you don’t need a visa to visit the Maldives, there are still rules and requirements for entry. These include having a valid passport with at least one month of validity, a confirmed booking for accommodation, and a bank statement proving you have enough funds to cover expenses for the duration of your stay.

The Maldives: A Paradise on Earth for Your Next Dream Vacation

Additionally, you may have to provide proof of purchase for your return flight home or an onward ticket to another destination. The Maldives also requires all tourists to complete a Traveller Declaration form within 96 hours of their arrival and departure from the country.

How to Get to the Maldives

The Maldives is accessible by air from various parts of the world. The main international airport is Velana International Airport, located on Hulhulé Island, near the capital city of Malé. Major airlines such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Emirates operate direct flights to the Maldives from major cities around the world.

You can also opt for connecting flights, which may be cheaper than direct flights. You can fly to a nearby hub, such as Dubai or Abu Dhabi and then take a connecting flight to the Maldives.

Once you arrive at the airport, you can take a domestic flight, seaplane, or speedboat to reach your resort or destination. Domestic flights are the most common mode of transportation for travelling between islands, while seaplanes and speedboats are usually used to reach more remote resorts. Most resorts offer transfers from the airport to the resort as part of their package.

Which Currencies Can I Use in the Maldives?

The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the official currency of the Maldives. However, most resorts and tourist establishments accept US dollars, euros, and British pounds. It’s recommended to bring and carry cash in US dollars if you can, as they are widely accepted and can be easily exchanged for Rufiyaa if needed. You can also use credit cards for larger purchases.

Accommodation Options in the Maldives

Accommodation in the Maldives is diverse and caters to a wide range of budgets and preferences. Various options are available on the islands, ranging from luxurious overwater villas to budget-friendly guesthouses.

One of the unique accommodation options in the Maldives is the overwater villa. These luxurious bungalows are built on stilts over the water and provide stunning views of the ocean. They typically feature private decks, direct access to the water, and glass floors, allowing guests to observe the marine life below.

If you prefer to stay on land, plenty of beachfront resorts offer a range of amenities, such as private pools, spas, and restaurants . Some of the more upscale resorts even offer private butlers and personalised services.

For those on a tighter budget, guesthouses are a great option. They are typically small, family-run establishments that offer basic amenities but are clean and comfortable. They provide a more authentic experience of Maldivian culture, as you get to stay with locals and experience their way of life.

Another option is to go camping on one of the uninhabited islands. It is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the Maldives without breaking the bank. Some resorts also offer the option of glamping, which is a more luxurious version of camping.

5 Unmissable Attractions in the Maldives

The city of male.

Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Conservation

The Maldives is a country that heavily relies on its natural resources and beauty to attract tourists . However, the increase in tourism comes with the risk of damaging the resources that attract visitors. Therefore, the Maldives has been implementing various initiatives to promote sustainable tourism and environmental conservation.

One such initiative is the Maldives’ pledge to become carbon neutral by 2030, which involves reducing carbon emissions from tourism and other sectors. The Maldives has also implemented strict regulations on waste management, including a ban on single-use plastics, to prevent damage to its marine ecosystem.

The Maldives: A Paradise on Earth for Your Next Dream Vacation

Many resorts and hotels in the Maldives have also implemented sustainable practices, such as using renewable energy sources, reducing water usage, and promoting locally sourced food. Some resorts have even established their own marine conservation projects, such as coral reef rehabilitation and sea turtle conservation programs, to protect the local marine life.

Tourists visiting the Maldives can also play a part in sustainable tourism by choosing eco-friendly accommodation options, supporting local businesses, and engaging in responsible tourism activities. This includes activities such as snorkelling and diving in a responsible manner, not disturbing marine life, and not littering on beaches or in the ocean.

Such efforts towards sustainable tourism and environmental conservation are not only beneficial to the country’s natural resources but also help to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty and unique ecosystem of the Maldives.

Maldives, an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands and 26 atolls, is the ultimate coastal paradise, a postcard destination and an epitome of leisure, nature and luxury all rolled in one. While it might be easy to visualise little blue islands floating over the dreamy lagoon, just imagine this set up with tons of luxury properties that bring this place to life. Marked by natures best, complemented by luxury and an overall experience that helps revitalize you, Maldives is definitely a deserving travel location for every human alive. There are a thousand reasons why this island should be your obvious choice for the next holiday, but here are the ones that top my list:

1. Perfect for Nature Enthusiasts If you consider yourself a beach bum and a dire lover of raw nature, there’s no place better than Maldives. With pristine blue waters kissing the white sand beaches, the destination serenades you with the incomparable charisma unique to this island nation. This drool worthy panorama is complemented by the most magical sunsets that can make you dream endlessly. From the time you set foot into Maldives you will be blown away by everything you see around. It is home to the best beaches in the world and it’s almost impossible to not fall in love with them. That alone is a big reason for any traveller to set eyes on this island.

The clear blue skies, the lush vegetation and that ideal beach vibe helps you get closer to nature and render emotions that touch your soul. It’s a destination that is seemingly the sunshine in an otherwise seasonal world. To add to this surrealism, its extensive marine life and the charming emerald lagoons make it the perfect holiday destination for a couple, a family as well as a group of friends looking to unwind. In the day you can sink your toes into the soft sand while the salty breeze serenades you gently, you can gaze at the endless blues and bright greens surrounding you, once the sun starts to set watch the ocean kiss the horizon and enjoy nature’s most magical display of colours, gaze at the sky while it’s on fire, sip on a cocktail and as the night folds in lie down under a blanket of stars with the sound of the waves lashing away like a sweet little lullaby. Maybe this is the ultimate definition of paradise!

2. Experience Unparalleled Luxury From the moment your plane lands on this island you will taste and experience luxury in every single way possible. Apart from that what makes this one different and unique from the rest of the world is the glorious and heartwarming hospitality. Given the plethora of luxury resorts on the island, you will be spoilt for choice. Lavish sea-facing beach villas, beautifully designed overwater villas, personal butlers, in room spas, private infinity pools, an extensive pillow menu, Michelin star food quality, hand picked experiences by a professional team – all of this is just a glimpse of what you can actually expect on this island. Maldives is a feast for all your senses!

3. The Extensive Marine Life Maldives is marked beautifully by crystal clear water and dreamy atolls and that more or less, signifies the island. However, its vast marine life certainly deserves acknowledgement and applause. It is a treasure box for travelers who hold a special interest in all things water. The island offers the most insightful and intriguing experiences for every tourist.  One can kayak around sea turtles, sail around the dolphins, go scuba diving, snorkel with reef fishes around age old corals and explore the vastness of the sea and live its impactful magic. Maldives is also home to beautiful diving sites that will let you enjoy simple yet surreal pleasures of marine life. From manta rays, sharks, turtles to dolphins and schools of little fishes, you will find everything in those deep blue waters. This world class diving destination offers experiences of a lifetime.

4. The Best Romantic Getaway Imagine waking up on a remote island with your loved one, watching the intriguing marine life, sipping on cocktails and walking on white sand beaches hand in hand. This sounds like an ultimate getaway with your significant other, doesn’t it? Maldives is the ideal location to revive or begin your relationship which is why it makes for one of the most preferred honeymoon spots. The island offers more than thousands of features that render a raw romantic vibe. It offers opportunities and romantic set ups that one probably can’t have in an otherwise urban and regular life back home. There are nights that one can dine under a sky full of stars and evenings that render you and your partner speechless with the iconic sunsets. Couples have the chance to go on a dolphin cruise, watch a movie under the stars and dine in a rainforest or a private beach with the best chefs attending to all their culinary requests. They can have date nights at underwater restaurants and stay in underwater rooms. With overwater villas, romantic settings and a wide range of activities, the island offers a very dreamy and intimate romantic atmosphere. You can stay there for twenty days with your partner and still have something new to do and a different dining set up every single day. If you’re looking at making memories, hire a photographer and capture the best images with the most beautiful backdrops.

5. A Breather from your Busy Life From the moment you land, you will instantly notice and feel the tranquility and serenity in the air and disconnect from your world only to connect with nature. It will reel you in from that very moment, already working on reigniting every sense of yours. The simple life that the islands urge you to live helps accentuate your calm sensations there. The barefoot concept introduced by most resorts only enhances to the experience and further puts you in touch with its surroundings and nature completely. Trust me, it feels empowering and so fulfilling. This meditative vibe is only elevated by the spa facilities in all hotels where they offer these services that allow you to enjoy the visual pleasure of its turquoise water and more. There is no other destination that would be able to pull you away from the same old life, very gently and send you back home with a revived sense of yourself and the world.

6. A Great Spot for some Family Bonding! Although Maldives is often marketed as a coveted couples’ destination, it is great for a getaway for families as well. The natural wonders dipped in impeccable beauty are a surefire way to create a calming and positive environment. This makes for a perfect ambience for families to spend some peaceful time together and bond at a stellar location. The resorts in  Maldives offer a bunch of activities, water sports, games and dining experiences that you can indulge in as a family. Moreover, the destination is steeped in features that are favourable for anyone and everyone. Most of the resorts have a kids club and a kids entertainment zone which makes it so much easier for the parents to relax. I would definitely go back here with my parents.

7. Privacy, Seclusion and Safety Today, in this new normal world where things are no longer the same as before, Maldives is now open to tourists and so with all safety and social isolation measures. If there is something else that the destination can guarantee besides a seamless proximity with the best of nature and luxury, it is safety. Maldives houses over 110 islands and each island is a hotel which eliminates the risk of being in overcrowded places. It’s the one island one resort destination. As for privacy, the location is awash with vibes of solace, relaxation and a complete state of contentment. This means that every individual is simply lost in the beauty there and interested in soaking in the charm that everyone is regarded with their own privacy and space. These luxury resorts there can be your private oasis during the course of your stay where you can simply bask under the sun on a hammock or just dive into the mysterious blues from your over water villas.

8. Seaplane Rides The beauty of this island is not only the accommodation but also the mode of transport that plays a huge roll in enhancing one’s experience. If you are travelling to the Maldives you must experience a seaplane ride. These planes can accommodate upto 8 people including luggage, they are quite tiny but the thrill of taking off and landing in water is inexplicable. Most of the resorts require you to choose this transport which definitely is my favourite.

9. The Resort Experience As spoken about before, one attribute that makes Maldives such an ideal getaway for everyone is its variety in accommodation- all steeped in luxurious hospitality.  Your experience at each resort in the Maldives will be completely different and absolutely refreshing. From private butlers and designer villas to spotting sharks from your room, you can experience life at its finest here. Moreover, there is a resort for every preference, budget, and quality of holiday that one is looking for. However, the over-water villas have the capacity to easily transport you in a world of dreams with its cruise like ambience and refined experience. Nevertheless, every space you choose will be certainly gorgeous! You can pick from a range of sea-facing or underwater villas that speak of luxury and the Maldivian charm. Since you spend all your time on one island, it’s the resort experience that matters in the end.

10. Activities and Food Lastly, what makes every vacation truly complete and fulfilling is the food and your local indulgences. One definitely can’t leave Maldives without sampling the delicious Maldivian crabs, fresh seafood and the international cuisine served by every single hotel. The local culinary experience is a must and only adds to the whole vacations charm. Ironically, as you relish these delicacies, you also have the chance to shed any added carbs by participating in the many activities the resorts offer you. Running around the island, cycling (most villas have cycles outside), scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, indoor games, tennis, and gyms are just some of the things you can be occupied with. If this doesn’t interest you then you can laze and master the art of doing nothing..

I’m hoping these reasons are enough to convince you that Maldives is worth breaking your bank. It’s a piece of paradise like no other and even after visiting this island nation thrice, my experience has been different every single time and I would happily jump on the next seaplane again if I could. Trust me, Maldives is a vibe!

Where to stay in Maldives: I think the best thing about Maldives is the variety of resorts that you could choose from depending on your budget and mood. From super luxury to a bit pocket friendly, from cool beach villas to romantic over water villas, Maldives has it all. During my recent trip I got a chance to experience three different resorts and here’s a short review:

1. Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa; A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, this deluxe all inclusive resort was an absolute dream to experience. Located on the Raa Atoll, this is about 45 mins away by seaplane. On landing we were greeted by some lovely smiling faces and then escorted to our fancy over water villa. The Maldivian style thatched roof is what caught my eye. My over water villa featured a gorgeous bedroom and a huge white marble bathroom both looking right into the ocean, L’Occitane toiletries, a walk in closet and a dreamy patio that overlooks the ocean. So the moment I would wake up, I could look straight into that gleaming blue ocean and the sun lounge chairs, a sight I’ll never forget. Make sure you enjoy the all inclusive mini bar too- full of chips, chocolate, beverages and wines, which by the way are replenished daily. All the villas are tastefully decorated with pictures and colours of the marine life making it the perfect blend of tropical and modern.

The resort features 120 villas that have been crafted beautifully with bamboo, natural stones and the Langhi Laanghi leaves, a decor that I absolutely loved. I was a huge fan of the unique all inclusive concept where your entire stay is included in the price you’ve paid for (all meals + room), yes all you can eat and drink! The resort has five restaurants – Aqua, The Beach Club Grill (Mediterranean – All day dining), Amazònico Restaurant (Latin American- dinner), Le Asiatique (Asian- dinner), Sunset pool cafe, sunrise cafe. The resort boasts the Emerald Spa, a stunning long pool area, Dolphin Kids Club, Gym, Sports Center, Diving and water sports Center. I got a chance to try one of their signature massages and I can definitely say their entire spa experience was pure bliss. They have beautiful cottages, a lounge area with an open jacuzzi, literally an oasis in the middle of nowhere. We also took some time out to kayak in the lovely water and it was one of the most relaxing and calming experiences. Apart from providing great quality of food and beverages, the all inclusive concept also lends a sense of ease during your entire stay. The Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa will provide you the quintessential Maldivian experience- luxury, comfort and the most gorgeous panorama.

Distance from Male Airport : 45 mins by seaplane from Male Airport What I loved : The all inclusive idea, the spa set up, the cycles outside every villa, the size and decor of my overwater villa, the size of the property and the activity options, the happy staff and service. Book- Here

2. Grand Park Kodhipparu: Contemporary, rustic and sophisticated is how I would like to describe the beautiful Grand Park Kodhipparu. Located in North Male Atoll, this resort is a great pick for couples that are looking at relaxing and disconnecting. The property boasts a beach club, gym, yoga deck, game lounge, an infinity pool, dive and water sports center and a 24 hour lifestyle host that helps you with everything you need throughout the stay. On arriving we were greeted by drums and we experienced a great stay in their Ocean Water Villa- an 80 sq mt cozy bohemian room featuring a massive terrace with a sun lounger, a hammock to lie down and enjoy the view along with stairs that take you straight into the ocean. Also loved the glass bottom right below the bed, a great spot to sip your coffee and enjoy the sight of fishes that swim by.

The food here definitely left a mark, especially their Nutella waffles at the breakfast buffet. They had great dining options to choose from- The Breeze Poolside Dining Bar, The Edge for buffet spreads and Firedoor for grills and matching grapes. We also had a lovely private dinner on the beach under the stars. The Over Water Spa section features 7 rooms that overlook the ocean along with a salon and a relaxation room, it’s literally a peaceful sanctuary. The island is also known for its nearby dive and wreck sites. Grand Park Kodhipparu is an ideal pick if you’re looking for five star activities with a refined budget and proximity to the airport

Distance from Male Airport : 20 mins by Speedboat What I loved : The bohemian decor of the overwater villa, the infinity pool and the cabanas, the idea of a personal lifestyle host to look after you, the delicious meals and the pocket friendly price. Book –  Here

3. The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort Situated on the Unesco Biosphere in Baa Atoll, the Westin boasts 70 villas all inspired by the marine life, they are modern and luxurious. Keeping wellness in mind, you will find everything on this property that help you move, eat, sleep and feel better including the mattress in your room which is specially designed to help you sleep better. It’s the food that steals the show here, with three restaurants on board- The Pearl, The Island Kitchen, Hawker and the Sunset Bar, you will love the options offered. I’m still thinking of the delicious Black Cod and vegetarian Maki Rolls I had at The Pearl. The breakfast spread is also quite impressive with a huge variety of dishes that are gluten free, dairy free, vegan and healthy.

Our Deluxe beach villa was fancy, modern and spelt luxury in every way. The heavenly bed overlooked into a lounge area followed by a small plunge pool and a path that further leads you to the beach. The bath area had a rainforest shower and a huge tub. The highlight for me was the orange juice machine in the room, you can simply wake up, slice the oranges and make yourself a glass of juice first thing in the morning.

Distance from Male Airport : 20 mins domestic flight +20 mins by Speedboat or 30 mins by seaplane What I loved : The specially designed ‘Heavenly bed’, the Wellness theme, the delicious Japanese meal.  Book –  Here

Important: I didn’t get a chance yet but if you do please visit the Vadhoo island in Raa Atoll to witness Bioluminescence, a natural phenomena where the plankton creates a sea of stars that get washed up on the beach. This is completely unpredictable but they say it happens between July to February and preferably pick a new moon night as the moonlight dims the glow.

Location: Located in the southwest of Sri Lanka is the island of Maldives which has more than 1100 coral islands forming 26 major atolls. There are four international and six domestic airports with Malé International Airport being the main one.

How to get to Malé, Maldives If you’re flying from Abu Dhabi opt for Etihad Airways. They have a direct 4 hour flight, extremely comfortable and quick! Book- www.etihad.com Also got a chance to experience their 24 hour Business Class Lounge which features multiple facilities like an international buffet, smokers centre, spa and a business center.

If you’re flying from Dubai then you could book a direct flight with Emirates (4 hours)

Getting around Maldives: This maybe one of the places in the world where the hotel transfer is an experience by itself. Travelling within the Maldives can be quite fun considering the amount of options available but it also depends on the location of your property. Some resorts can be accessible only by boat (Grand Park Kodhipparu), some only by a seaplane (Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa), some by a local airline and followed a boat ride (Westin). Make sure you double check all the details well in advance so you can plan your arrival time and journey. Do keep the waiting time into consideration.

Note: – If you plan on changing resorts then keep in mind that you have to keep Malé as the base and then switch properties. You can’t go from one property to another one directly, you first have to go back to Malé Airport and then switch your mode of transport according to the location of your next resort. – Maldives will be relatively safer (Covid wise) than most of the other travel destinations since each hotel is on a single island and it’s easy to be isolated as all the properties are massive. – Since Maldives follows Islam, bringing in alcohol is absolutely illegal. Even if you have bought it from the duty free of the departing country, these items will be confiscated/ bonded by the customs upon arrival. Of course, you can drink legally in your resort premises. -The luggage restriction for the seaplane is 25kg check in and 5kgs for hand. They are quite strict about this so avoid overpacking.

Currency: The official currency of the Maldives is Rufiyaa. You can check the conversion rates on www.xe.com But all hotels and airports widely accept US dollars.

When to visit the Maldives: Due to it’s proximity to the equator, Maldives experiences hot weather all year round. But just like the other spots around the Indian Ocean it also gets a bit of the monsoon around June, July, August. Since this is not the peak season you can might get lucky with good offers. But if you’re going there to enjoy the sun and the activities then definitely recommend the dry season from October to April.

Things not to miss in the Maldives: – Snorkeling in the house reef or scuba diving in the deep blue ocean – Trying the local Maldivian lobster – Eating the spicy Maldivian curries – A visit to the Spa – Feeding the sharks – A sunset dolphin cruise – Hopping on a seaplane – Lazing around on the white sand beaches – Enjoying the sunset

What to pack for Maldives: The first thing you need to knock off your list is a pair of heels/formal shoes, you just won’t need that. All you need is a pair of flip flops, which by the way won’t be used most of the time. The island is best enjoyed bare foot. While packing your outfits add the following to your list- Swimsuits and bikinis (lots of them), cover ups for the pool and beach, day dresses, evening flowy gowns in bright colours, fun floral tops and some shorts. Accessorise this with your cane or rattan beach bags, hats and sunglasses. Forget your fancy jewellery and pack tons of shell necklaces, fringe earrings and gold hoops.

Essay On My Dream Destination

Introduction

Paris, the capital city of France, often referred to as the “City of Light”, is my dream destination. Known for its rich history, breathtaking architecture, and vibrant culture, it presents a unique blend of charm and elegance that is hard to resist.

Historical Significance

My Vacation to Maldives

Last year during our summer holidays, my family went to Maldives for a vacation full of fun and enjoyment. Maldives is located near Sri Lanka. It is famous for its lagoons and white beaches. We flew with Lufthansa air lines till Kuaukapi in Sri Lanka and then took a bi-plane to Male International Airport. The bi-plane rider was a one-of-a-kind experience and I will never forget its wobbly balance.

The city of Male was the cleanest city ever. All the citizens had pledged never to litter and chucked their waste materials in a dustbin. Our resort was 50km off the shore of Male. It was called Taj Exotica. It was an island in itself. The white sandy beaches shone brightly like yellow diamonds. The island was surrounded by coral infested lagoons as far as the eye could see. We had to take a golf buggy ride to our cabin. During the trip we saw huge coconut trees. I could almost imagine them laughing at our meagre size. When we reached the other side of the island we were greeted by the most beautiful site ever. There were sixty to seventy dolphins jumping in and out of the water. I felt like taking some time out and thanking Mother Earth for this beautiful sight. Our cabin was built on a lagoon. The floor was made on a 30cm bullet proof glass and we could see the corals as if they were on an HD TV. The sun also shone with a lot of brilliance and brightness.

On the flight back to Mumbai, I recalled all that I had experienced in Maldives. The breath-taking feats of nature, the great hospitality and of course the dolphins!
