Why Blood Donation is Important – and Who Benefits

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Blood is essential to help patients survive surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. This lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation. The need for blood is constant. But only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly. You can help the American Red Cross make sure that supply meets demand.

Why is it Important to Donate Blood?

About 328 million people currently live in the U.S. Each year, approximately 6.8 million people in the U.S donate blood. Annually, this adds up to about 13.6 million units of whole blood collected for donation in the U.S. The Red Cross provides about 40% of our nation’s blood and blood cell components to donors. Your blood donations are used for patients in need of surgery, cancer treatment and transfusions for blood loss from traumatic injuries. Want to know more about the blood supply in the U.S.? Visit the Facts About Blood Supply page.

Why Cancer Patients Need Blood

For cancer patients, blood transfusions can act as a resource to implement platelets back into the body after heavy treatments such as chemo or radiation therapy.

For cancer patients, blood cells that are made in the bone marrow are often at risk. This lack of blood cell production can cause chronic diseases over time which may affect organs such as the kidneys, spleen and liver.

The Importance of Diversity in the Blood Supply

Maintaining diversity in the blood supply is essential. Some blood types are quite rare and are likeliest to be found among people with shared ancestral origins. Visit our Blood and Diversity page for more information on the need for diversity in the blood supply.

Why CMV Negative Blood is Important

CMV is known as the cytomegalovirus. CMV is a flu-like virus to which an estimated 85% of adults in the United States will be exposed by the age of 40. This means that the majority of adults in the United States carry CMV antibodies. Unfortunately, these antibodies might pose a danger to particularly vulnerable patients. That’s why CMV-negative blood is preferred for use in some cases.

In a medical setting, CMV-negative blood may be utilized for transfusions for pediatric-specific conditions for newborns and premature babies, as well as for immune-compromised adults.

Blood Donation Types

Blood donations can yield a variety of blood products, including red cells, platelets and plasma. You may be most familiar with the typical whole blood donation drive seen at workplaces, schools and community events, but there are a few other ways to help give more life through the Red Cross.

Whole Blood Donation vs. Power Red Donation

As the name implies, “whole blood” donation includes all of the contents within the blood. This includes red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. Whole blood donations are typically used to help patients fight cancer, blood disorders and traumatic injuries.

The Power Red donation enables the donor to safely donate two units of red blood cells at just one appointment! The Power Red donation is similar to the whole blood donation, except a phlebotomist uses a special machine to ensure two units of exclusively red blood cells are collected. The machine returns the other blood components to you. Think of it as a more efficient way to yield more fuel for patients. The Red Cross highly encourages donors with O+, O-, A- and B- blood types to try a Power Red donation. For more information on eligibility to donate visit the power red donations information page.

Platelet Donation vs. Plasma Donation:

Platelets help your body create clots to stop bleeding. Platelet donations are critical for patients who are fighting cancer, chronic diseases and traumatic injuries.

The collection process is unique and a bit different than the whole blood donations, both arms are involved. One arm is used to send blood through the apheresis process using a sterile centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the red blood cells from the platelets. The heavier red cells sink to the bottom during the process. These red blood cells are returned to you through the other arm. It’s important to note that an appointment needs to be scheduled at a specific Red Cross donation center rather than at a mobile blood drive.

Plasma Donation:

During a plasma donation, called plasmapheresis, blood is drawn from one arm and sent to the centrifuge that separates out the plasma. The red blood cells and platelets are then returned to you in the same arm. Plasma is used to help patients with severe burns, cancer or other potentially life-threatening conditions.

The Red Cross encourages donors with the AB blood type to donate plasma, as this is the universal plasma donor type. One donation provides up to four units of plasma for patients in need.

As you can see, blood donations are one of the most important things you can do to help others in need. There is no substitute for blood, and it can’t be manufactured. Every day, blood donors help patients of all ages from all backgrounds.

Why Blood Donation is So Critical

Why do people donate.

Everyone has their own reasons for donating blood, but a few common ones include:

  • Donating is a generous thing to do. It helps people in need, and it helps people in your community. When you give, others live.
  • Donors, especially those who donate regularly, keep our nation’s blood supply stable. Although many people donate blood after disasters, blood is needed every day of the year.
  • There is no substitute for blood. Donors provide the only supply of life-saving blood for those in need.
  • Donating is simple, fast, and convenient. The donation process can take as little as 45 minutes of your time, but can make a lifelong difference for someone else.

How is my blood used?

If you donate blood, it will be given to someone who needs it through a transfusion. Transfusions help replace blood that is lost due to surgery or injury. Transfusions also help people with disorders that prevent them from making blood correctly. Blood transfusions are one of the most common procedures in U.S. hospitals.

There are different kinds of blood donation . Each one is used for a variety of life-saving procedures and treatments.

  • Red blood cells are given to people who have blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease or chronic anemia caused by kidney failure or bleeding in the stomach. They are also given to people who have acute blood loss from trauma. Sometimes babies born very early need a transfusion to increase the number of red blood cells in their bodies.
  • Platelets are most often used to treat cancer. They are also given to patients who have open-heart surgery and organ transplants.
  • Plasma transfusions are used for patients with liver failure, bad infections, and serious burns.
  • “Whole blood” is usually given to people who have life-threatening injuries or people in surgery.

Blood Donation Essay

Blood is necessary for the body's effective functioning. Large amounts of blood loss can lead to fatal illnesses. Blood donation is the practice of giving blood to others in order to aid them in dealing with their medical issues. It represents humanity. Here are a few sample essays on blood donations.

100 Words Essay On Blood Donation

200 words essay on blood donation, 500 words essay on blood donation.

Blood Donation Essay

Giving blood is all about giving the gift of life to others. The donation of blood for medicinal and scientific purposes is the goal of voluntary blood donation. Every donor must undergo a medical examination since blood is a vital component of your body, which helps to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses during transfusions. One pint of blood, or one-tenth the amount an adult keeps in their body, is the maximum amount that a typical donor is permitted to donate at once. One pint is enough blood to save three lives. Blood donation is an essential component of medicine since roughly one in three people on the earth require blood transfusions at some point in their lives.

Blood Donor Day is celebrated on June 14 to create awareness of the universal need for blood for health care and to thank every individual who donates blood. Most notably, the WHO sponsors a campaign on this day to encourage people to give blood. A person must be between the age of 17 and 66 in order to be eligible to give blood. They must be in good health and weigh at least 50 kg. Diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and others prevent some people from giving blood.

My Uncle's Story

You do not have to be a fireman or a doctor to save a life, it is just as easy as donating blood. My uncle had once gotten into a bad accident, lost a lot of blood because of it, and urgently needed blood for his surgery. No one from my family was a match, so we all contacted our friends for help. After a few hours of struggling to find a donor, my brother's friend came to help. It was because of him that that day my uncle went into surgery timely and today is living a healthy and beautiful life. My whole family praised my brother’s friend and thanked him for his generosity.

The simplest acts have the capability of having the largest impact. Blood that is donated is used to treat patients with a variety of medical conditions such as blood disorders, cancer and anaemia or to help replace the blood lost from patients during surgery. Each donation is split into its components, these being red blood cells, platelets and plasma, meaning that each individual patient can be given the component that they require in order to help them to recover. This means that every donation is put to its best use and each donor has therefore given the most that they can through one donation.

Why Should You Donate Blood?

You should never hesitate to donate blood because it is primarily done to save lives. It represents humanity. It is blind to the blood donor's caste, creed, or religion. The organs of our body perform a variety of tasks, and in order to do so, these organs require oxygen and energy. The blood that flows in our body provides oxygen and energy. Therefore, blood from an outside source is needed when an organ fails to perform a certain function and hence blood donation is required to save lives.

Benefits Of Blood Donation

People who donate blood to blood banks serve a very noble humanitarian cause irrespective of caste/ creed/ religion or gender. There are many advantages to donating blood.

The most important benefit is that you are saving someone’s life. The blood donated can be used three times because it is sectioned into various components. It revitalises the fragile health condition of a human being. The human body is capable of regenerating blood within a few hours after donation.

The risk of cancer such as the liver, lung, and colon can be reduced by constant blood donation. This is because the iron stored in the body is maintained at a healthy level.

Every donor has to go through a physical test to analyse whether they are eligible to donate blood. This health checkup helps in knowing your own body like pressure level, haemoglobin, iron and sugar level. It is also tested for HIV, hepatitis, and other diseases.

The most powerful health benefit is psychological. When you know that the blood that you are donating will be used somewhere to save someone’s life, it gives you a sense of immense pride.

There are blood banks where people can store their blood, and that blood is used in case of a medical emergency. It is advised that people with rare blood types deposit their blood in blood banks for future needs. The need for blood is always greater than the supply, hence more encouragement should be given to individuals so they would voluntarily donate blood and save lives.

Today, it is crucial to raise awareness of the benefits of blood donation and the need for people to appreciate life. Several NGOs are working towards spreading awareness on blood donation which might save anyone's life. Their primary goal is to encourage individuals to give blood and to let them know how important what they have done is.

Voluntary Blood Donation Importance Essay

Introduction.

Blood donation is a vital part of medical aid. Although there are artificial substitutes for blood, they will hardly ever be as effective as natural blood in cases when the blood transfusion is needed. In contrast to the blood, they lack plenty of natural substances, which are crucial for metabolism.

Blood donation is a voluntary act aimed at the organization and supply of blood for medical and scientific purposes. The donors are the individuals who donate their blood and its integral parts. The blood donated by the volunteers is often divided into its components because some patients need only plasma, red cells, or some other components. Usually, the donation takes about 8-10 minutes but certain types can take up to two hours ( Why donate blood? 2014).

It goes without saying that blood donation is an important part of medicine as almost every third individual on the planet needs the transfusion of blood once in his or her life. The rare blood groups represent especially bright evidence of the importance of voluntary blood donation. Sometimes, the relatives or friends become the donors for the patient. However, if the person who needs the transfusion has the rare blood group and Rhesus factor and none of the relatives has the same, the doctors use the blood donated and stored by the volunteers. Thus, voluntary blood donation can save the lives of people. The patients with leucosis need the transfusion every day and they will die without the supply of the donated blood.

There are also benefits from donating blood for donors themselves as it reduces the risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases. Besides, it stimulates the circulation of blood and makes the skin and hair healthier.
