Summary and Study Guide

Dog Man (2016) is a graphic novel by children’s writer and cartoonist Dav Pilkey. At the time of writing, it is the first of 11 Dog Man books. While later volumes in the series follow a unifying plot, the first Dog Man book is an anthology of loosely connected one-shot stories that follow the adventures of Dog Man, a superhero with the head of a dog and the body of a police officer. Dog Man faces villains such as Petey, “The World’s Most Evilest Cat” (187); a corrupt mayor who controls a robotic police chief; and an army of sentient hot dogs. He uses his human strength, heightened canine senses, and natural intelligence to save the day. The humor in Dog Man presents a combination of meta jokes, cartoon surrealism, and gross-out gags. Like much of Pilkey’s work, this series is an affectionate parody of cape comics (i.e., superhero comics) and a love letter to the homemade comic books Pilkey created as a child.

Dog Man is a spinoff of Pilkey’s acclaimed children’s series Captain Underpants. The connection between Dog Man and Captain Underpants is established through a metanarrative framing device. In the texts, these comics are attributed to fictional authors George Beard and Harold Hutchins. George and Harold are best friends who attend fourth grade at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School. They share a prankish sense of humor and a love of making comics. Harold draws the art, and George writes the stories. To reflect the fictional authors’ young age, Pilkey draws in a crude, simple style and hand-letters the text in a scribbly font. Throughout Dog Man, George and Harold directly address the reader and discuss the process of making their comics. They also include extra materials, such as flip-books, drawing tips, and notes from their disapproving teachers.

Though it is not as popular as its predecessor Captain Underpants, Dog Man is acclaimed and beloved in its own right. According to Scholastic, 40 million Dog Man books have sold worldwide in 42 languages. In late 2020, production on a Dog Man movie was announced by DreamWorks Studios after the success of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017). Plot Summary

Dog Man is divided into a brief prologue and four one-shot stories. In the Prologue, Dog Man ’s fictional creators—two fourth graders named George Beard and Harold Hutchins—describe the process of creating Dog Man comics.

Chapter 1, “A Hero Is Unleashed,” presents Dog Man’s origin story. He is a superhero with the head of a police dog and the body of a human cop. On his first adventure, Dog Man is chased by Petey, who attempts to defeat him with a giant vacuum cleaner. Dog Man defeats Petey by leading the vacuum to the beach, where it sucks up too much water and explodes.

Chapter 2, “Robo Chief,” tells the story of an evil mayor who replaces the police chief with a robot, which she controls. Dog Man uses his heightened dog senses to unravel the mayor’s plan and restore the chief to his rightful position. Petey and the mayor, who are both villains, turn against each other in a bid for control of the city.

Chapter 3, “Book ‘Em Dog Man,” is a “retro” Dog Man comic that George and Harold made in first grade. In it, Petey “zaps” all the words out of books around the world, causing everybody to become “supa dumb.” Dog Man foils his plan by finding Petey’s secret stash of books and distributing them to children.

In Chapter 4, “Weenie Wars: The Franks Awaken,” Petey uses “living spray” to bring a hot dog to life. After Petey refuses to be friends with it, the hot dog raises an army of hot dogs to take over the world. Dog Man defeats the hot dog army by eating it, with the help of several regular dogs.

Dog Man (Dav Pilkey) Summary & Study Guide

Dog Man (Dav Pilkey) by Dav Pilkey

Dog Man (Dav Pilkey) Summary & Study Guide Description

The following versions of the books were used to create this study guide: Pilkey, Dav. Dog Man. Graphix, Scholastic, New York, 2016. Kindle AZW file. Pilkey, Dav. Dog Man Unleashed. Graphix, Scholastic, New York, 2017. Kindle AZW file.

Dog Man, the first novel of the series, introduces George Beard and Harold Hutchins. These fictional characters have been friends since kindergarten. They are now fourth graders. George is the writer of the Dog Man comic series, and Harold Hutchins is the cartoonist. They have been in trouble many times for creating the comics, especially when they are supposed to be doing school work.

The first chapter of Dog Man explains that an evil cat named Petey is watching a cop named Officer Knight and his dog Greg. Petey says Officer Knight has a strong body for fighting, but he is not very smart. Greg is smart, but his body is not good for fighting. Petey sets off a bomb, planning to kill both Officer Knight and Greg. In the hospital, the doctor says that Officer Knight's head is dying and Greg's body is dying. A nurse comes up with the idea to sew Greg's head on Officer Knight's body, saving them both. When Petey hears the news, he realizes he has accidentally created Dog Man, the perfect crime-fighting cop. Petey then makes a giant vacuum, planning to suck Dog Man up. When Dog Man runs to the ocean, the vacuum bag sucks up so much water that it explodes, creating a huge wave. Dog Man surfs out on a surf board that the vacuum also sucked up, saving Petey from being washed away and then arresting him.

Over the course of the comic book, Dog Man shows that he has a strong bond with the police Chief, though Dog Man is often in trouble for acting inappropriately, such as peeing on the floor in the Chief's office. However, when an evil Mayor fires the Chief, Dog Man puts an end to her plan and helps the Chief get his job back.

Petey constantly escapes from Cat Jail, so Dog Man repeatedly captures him. Petey is at the heart of many of the problems, including bringing hot dogs to life so that they begin a rebellion. In every case, Dog Man puts an end to the plots, saving the day and proving that good always wins over evil.

While Dog Man is always battling Petey's plans, he faces other villains as well. Petey uses a paper cut-out of himself to escape jail. The cut-out comes to life, creating Flat Petey. Flat Petey is just as evil as normal Petey. Flat Petey forces a witch doctor to obey his every command. Flippy the fish becomes another of Dog Man's opponents. Flippy is naturally evil. When he gets an overdose of Brain Dots, he develops telekinetic abilities that allow him to rob stores and battle with Dog Man. At every turn, Dog Man triumphs, making it clear that good always wins over evil.

BOOK REVIEW: Dog Man by Dav Pilkey

written by David Steffen

essay about dog man

Dog Man is a 2016 graphic novel for children written and drawn by Dav Pilkey, the creator of the Captain Underpants books. Just as, in the Captain Underpants books the Captain Underpants comics were invented by in-book characters George and Harold, Dog Man is their newest creation.

The story begins with a villainous attack that leaves a policeman with a dying head and a dog with a dying body. A fast-thinking ER nurse proposes a drastic procedure to try to make the most of a dire situation, and soon Dog Man is born, half cop, half dog, with the strengths (and weaknesses) of both. Dog Man is the new hero extraordinaire, beloved by all and eager to save the day! Dog Man will face off against Petey the Cat and other dastardly villains, foiling their plots and saving the day!

Dog Man is a great book for kids in early grade school. It’s the kind of books that kids love to read and especially just as they’re learning to read the funny kid-targeted jokes and funny illustrations will encourage them to come back for more. And if they like this book, there is an ongoing series still being published. Highly recommended!

If you ever get a chance to go to a book signing with Dav Pilkey, I would highly recommend it as well. He is great with the kids and has a great energy, and he takes the time to give each kid some attention, looking at drawings they make just for him.

500+ Words Essay on My Pet Dog

Pets are a great blessing in anyone’s life. They are the only ones who love us unconditionally. Pets always offer us everything they have without asking for anything in return. The main aim of any pet’s life is to make their owner happy. Nowadays, even the term ‘owner’ is changing. People prefer their pets as kids and to themselves as parents. This is how the relationship between pets is evolving. People treat them no less than humans. For instance, they celebrate their birthdays; get those matching outfits and more.

In my opinion, I feel the pets rightly deserve it. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is dogs. A man’s best friend and the most faithful animal, a dog. I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

Sasha – My Pet Dog

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Essay on My Pet Dog

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

As and when Sasha grew up, he learned various tricks. We trained him to follow our instructions and he even learned a few tricks. We loved showing him off to our colony friends and relatives. I always took Sasha out with me as he loved taking a walk on the road.

Furthermore, my siblings and I took on the responsibility of keeping Sasha clean. Every week, we took turns to bathe him and brush him nicely. I remember I even got a bow for him from my pocket money. Sasha loved it and wagged his tail in excitement. Sasha has been with us through thick and thin and we will forever be indebted to him for his loyalty.

A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

Certainly, Sasha made us better human beings. We are now more compassionate towards animals. There was one instance where the stray dogs were going to harm a kitten, and to our surprise, Sasha saved that little kitten and got her home.

In other words, we have learned a lot of things from Sasha. He protected us when we slept at night. He tried to cheer us up whenever anyone of us was sad. Sasha’s obedience inspired me a lot to be kind to my parents. Therefore, all the credit for changing our lives goes to Sasha.

Man Who Spent a Year Living as a Dog Now Wants to be a Different Animal

A Japanese man spent $14K on an incredibly realistic collie costume to fulfill his “dream of becoming an animal.” But after spending nearly a year as a dog, the man now wants to try living as a different animal. Maybe living as a dog turned out to be too ruff?

Man spends $14K on a realistic collie costume to fulfill dream of living as an animal

We’re not sure if you heard, but a Japanese man announced on YouTube video back in June 2022 that he wanted to fulfill his lifelong dream of being an animal.

The man, now known as Toco the Human Collie, told the media that he “had a vague dream of becoming an animal” since childhood.

Last year, a psychologist interviewed by The New York Post referred to Toco as a “therian.” The term refers to someone who identifies as a specific nonhuman animal. A therian can also describe a person who, on some level, believes they are an animal in a human body.

Toco told a Japanese news outlet that “quadrupedal animals” are his favorite. He told an Indian news outlet that he believed a dog would be a good fit for him “considering that it would be a realistic model.”

Toco hired Zeppet to create a custom-made collie suit. According to Zeppet, the costume took about 40 days to create. He told the media he spent roughly $14,000 on the incredibly lifelike collie costume.

Toco the Human Collie steps out in public

Toco’s story went viral again in the summer of 2023 when he stepped out in public for the first time wearing the costume.

“I made it a collie because it looks real when I put it on,” Toco told the media.

Later, Toco confessed that he felt both “nervous” and “scared” before wearing the costume in public for the first time.

Naturally, people online have thoughts. Some called it “disturbing,” while others called it “bizarre.”

“This is my hobby, so I will carry on,” Toco said regarding the negative comments. “It makes me happy and other people happy too.”

“Rather than being tough or physically uncomfortable, the feelings of excitement and fun I receive from this experience are stronger,” Toco told the New York Post during an interview in September 2023. “I've wanted to be an animal ever since I can remember.”

But now he wants to be a different animal

Toco the Human Collie may have to change his moniker. Toco was recently interviewed by a Japanese news outlet and made a major life announcement. After spending a year living as a dog, he now says he wishes to live as a different animal.

Toco acknowledged that just the motor requirements of maneuvering and ambulating like a dog are physically challenging.

“Dogs and humans have different bone structures and the way they bend their legs and arms,” Toco said, “so it's very difficult to make movements that look like this.”

“I might realistically be able to become another dog, a panda or a bear,” Toco continued. “A fox or a cat would also be nice, but they are too small for humans to try.”

“I'd like to fulfill my dream of becoming another animal someday,” Toco added.

As of now, it is unclear which animal Toco will choose when he changes his quadrupedal identity. Choosing a large animal with bipedal habits that can occasionally walk on its hind legs might be less taxing on Toco’s body. His obvious choices would be a bear, a kangaroo, or a gorilla. Although large, an emu or an ostrich would probably be too much of a stretch (pun intended).

Toco has around 64,800 YouTube subscribers who are undoubtedly waiting with bated breath to find out which animal he will choose next.

This year, 3,315 students submitted essays as part of the contest. Essays from three age groups (K-1st, 2nd-3rd and 4th-5th) were judged in each of the five geographic regions, which resulted in 15 winners.

This year’s winning teacher -- Mrs. Saida Chaieb, a kindergarten teacher at Spring Hill Elementary in Cabell County -- will receive a $2,500 cash prize.

“The annual ‘When I Grow Up’ essay contest is one of my favorite things to oversee as State Treasurer, as it gives us a chance to hear from thousands of kids from across the state who share their dreams of what they want to be when they grow up,” Moore said. “This inspirational contest not only gives parents a chance to sit down with their child and talk about their dreams for their future, but also an opportunity to begin seriously planning how to achieve it.”
