Programme Details
Master of Arts / Master of Science in (Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability Studies)
Location: Mumbai
School: School of Habitat Studies
Centre: Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies
The two year programme, Master of Arts / Master of Science (Climate Change and Sustainability Studies) Studies is a pioneering initiative of the School of Habitat Studies, that was initiated on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Earth Summit at Rio, held in 1992. In the twenty years since Rio, both the issues of climate change as well as sustainability have become significantly more urgent. The programme attempts to provide a base for further interdisciplinary research and learning on issues emerging from the interface of human society with the geophysical and the biological environment, both in the local and global sense. The various forms and aspects of this interaction are examined in detail in the programme. The emphasis is on understanding the ecological and the economic, and the socio- Political sustainability of these interactions in the light of developmental objectives and ecological constraints. The issues of economic development, poverty, human development and equity would be revisited and their interlinkages with the environment explored.
The M.A. programme has a special focus on the issue of climate change which is among the most urgent global environmental concerns confronting the world today. The programme seeks to build amongst the students an in-depth understanding of the multi-dimensional and complex nature of climate change through comprehensive and thorough engagement with the relevant scholarship and field studies and interaction with practitioners, grass-roots workers and activists from communities an (4 Credits) movements. This entails looking into the reasons behind climate change, its impacts, the vulnerabilities of the future in the era of climate change and the complex responses required in terms of climate change mitigation and adaptation. This programme is based on an intensive four-semester schedule that combines theoretical perspectives and substantial fieldwork. The graduates from this programme will have a wide range of capabilities that will enable them to work and intervene in a number of possible locations, including development organisations, government agencies, departments and projects, academia, and other civil society and community based organisations. It also provides the necessary background for students to potentially work in the field of climate change and sustainability with industry, both in the public and private sector. The extensive space devoted to their dissertation work enables students to direct their learning towards working in any thematic locations of their choice in the future. The programme specifically involves teaching and inter-disciplinary dissertation work in areas including climate policy, energy and energy policy including renewables, water and water policy and governance, natural resource economics and economics of climate change, governance issues including natural resources and local and global environmental governance, sustainability issues in industry, etc. In summary, the programme: • Provides students with knowledge of the scholarship in climate change, sustainability and sustainable development, based on a sound introduction to the study of development in general. • Teaches students to critically assess climate mitigation and adaptation principles and practices, and sustainability principles and practices. • Provides students with the conceptual and practical tools to evaluate developments in key sectors such as energy and water on the basis of their scientific, economic, and technological merits, as well as on their potential to contribute to broad societal goals such as development and poverty eradication, environmental protection and enabling equity. • Teaches students to locate and map value (4 Credits) vulnerabilities with respect to the environment and climate, but taking account also of social vulnerabilities including those due to caste, class and gender.
Note: The Total number of creditts, list of CBCS curses and semester- wise listing of courses is provisional, and may undergo some changes. Due to current pandemic situation courses may be shifted or taught across semesters.
*Basic Concepts in Economics and Environmental and Natural Resource Economics will run in sequence
**Students will be charges Rs.4000 in semester I for Urban fieldwork and Rs.8000 in semester II for the Rural fieldwork. Charges are waived for students on GOI-PMS Scholarship.
***Project/Dissertation work will begin in the second semester. Students expected to do preliminary/exploratory field work in summer after rural field work. The Project Work or Dissertation Research is an independent work by a student on any relevant topic connected with the theme of concentration chosen under the guidance of a faculty member (and outside expert, if needed). Project/Dissertation credits are spread over 2 semesters III and IV.Proposal preparation and presentation for te project/Dissertation willtake place around 3rd week of semester III
****Semester IV begins with field work of Ten weeks or more (till Dec. 15th ) from the start of the vacation after semester III.

Environmental journalism in India: Past, present, and future
- Manipal Institute of Communication, Manipal
Research output : Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Chapter
“The state of India’s natural environment has perhaps never looked bleaker, " writes the author of this chapter. While newspapers continue to thrive in India, “environmental concerns are usually an afterthought.” Social media are on the rise, but are sometimes the source of fake news. The deadly Union Carbide gas leak in Bhopal in 1984 “was unlike anything Indian journalists had covered in terms of environmental news, and in many ways, it affected the future coverage of disasters.” Nevertheless, very few Indian news media have developed environmental sections and the day-to-day chronic environmental issues inherent in this developing nation receive scant news coverage.

Opportunities for Students
NCESS provides various opportunities for school as well as college students to familiarise and/or pursue research on different branches of earth sciences. In order to provide a glimpse on the world of earth science disciplines, an open day is observed for school students during April every year coinciding with the Earth Day celebrations. On this day laboratories in the institute are open for half a day for students to visit and interact with scientists.
Further, the Centre offers Internship/Summer training and Dissertation programs to selected candidates as part of their curriculum, while pursuing University level education. Notification in this regard will appear on website every year. NCESS is a recognised R&D institution of various universities for carrying out doctoral programs. Research scholars can register for Ph.D under science, environmental and inter-disciplinary topics as and when announcements are made by the universities. Eminent scientists from national as well as international institutions visit NCESS regularly for scientific exchange programs. The Earth Science Forum in the institute is a platform for information exchange on activities of on-going research projects and all college students available in the campus are allowed to participate in such presentations.
Internship/Training/Dissertation at ESSO-NCESS
Applications for internships/training/dissertation for students can be submitted during February and September every year. Candidates, who are interested to work at NCESS must apply in the attached format ( click here ). Selected candidates must bring printout of their application forms, after duly signed by the HOD of respective department with official seal, at the time of arrival for training in ESSO-NCESS.
Eligibility
Applications of only the following students will be considered for scrutiny and final acceptance.
