When the   Seattle, Washington -based head office of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – a world-renowned philanthropic organization – approached us in search of a unique charity event, we knew we needed to deliver something epic. Understanding that their team   h ad effectively   done it all   when it comes to charity events, it was important for them to be able to get together as a team and give back   in new ways .

Our team  decided the best way to do this was to   creat e   a brand-new event for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation   which had never been executed before.   We created an entirely new charitable event –   Bookworm Builders   – for them   and their team loved it! It allowed them to give back to their community, collaborate, get creative, and work together for a common goal. Bookworm Builders has since gone on to become a staple activity for tons of other Outback Team Building and Training customers!

Who said hosting   an   impactful training program   means having your full team in the same place at the same time? Principia refused to let distance prevent them from having a great team, so they contacted us to help them find a solution. Their goals were to find better ways of working together and to create a closer-knit company culture among their 20 employees and contractors living in various parts of the country.

We worked with Principia to host an   Emotional Intelligence   skill development training event   customized to work perfectly for their remote team. The result was a massive positive impact for the company. They found they experienced improved employee alignment with a focus on company culture, as well as more emotionally aware and positive day-to-day interactions. In fact, the team made a 100% unanimous decision to bring back Outback for additional training sessions.

W e know that employee training which is   tailored to   your organization can make the difference between an effective program and a waste of company time. That’s why our team jumped at the opportunity to facilitate a series of custom development sessions to help the Royal Canadian Mint discover the tools they needed to manage a large change within their organization.

We hosted three custom sessions to help the organization recognize the changes that needed to be made, gain the necessary skills to effectively manage the change, and define a strategy to implement the change:

  • Session One:   The first session was held in November and focused on preparing over 65 employees for change within the company.
  • Session Two:   In December, the Mint’s leadership team participated in a program that provided the skills and mindset required to lead employees through change.
  • Session Three:   The final session in February provided another group of 65 employees with guidance on how to implement the change.

1. How a Satellite Employee “Garnered the Reputation” as Her Team’s Pro Event Planner

We’ve been in this business for a long time, and we know that not everybody who’s planning a corporate event is a professional event planner. But no   matter   if   it’s their first time planning an event or their tenth, we   love   to help make our customers look good in front of their team. And when an employee at Satellite Healthcare was tasked with planning a team building event for 15 of her colleagues, she reached out to us – and we set out to do just that!

Our customer needed a collaborative activity that would help a diverse group of participants get to know each other, take her little to no time to plan, and would resonate with the entire group.

With that in mind, we helped her facilitate a   Military Support Mission . The event was a huge success and her colleagues loved it. In fact, she has now garnered the reputation as the team member who knows how to put together an awesome team building event.

An innovative and creative company, they were in search of an activity that could help their 60 staff get to know each other better. They also wanted the event to be hosted so that they could sit back and enjoy the fun.

The solution? We helped them host their first-ever   Amazing Race   team building event.

3. How Team Building Helped Microsoft Employees Donate a Truckload of Food

As one of our longest-standing and most frequent collaborators, we know that Microsoft is always in search of new and innovative ways to bring their teams closer together. With a well-known reputation for being avid advocates of corporate social responsibility, Microsoft challenged us with putting together a charitable team building activity that would help their team bond outside the office and would be equal parts fun, interactive, and philanthropic.

We   analyzed which of   our six charitable team building activities   would be the best fit for their needs , and we landed on the perfect one :   End-Hunger Games . In this event, the Microsoft team broke out into small groups, tackled challenges like relay races and target practice, and earned points in the form of non-perishable food items. Then, they used their cans and boxes of food to try and build the most impressive structure possible in a final, collaborative contest. As a result, they were able to donate a truckload of goods to the local food bank.

Nothing dampens your enjoyment of a holiday more than having to worry about work – even if it’s something fun like a team building event. But for one T-Mobile employee, this was shaping up to be the case. That’s because , on the day before the holiday weekend,   she found out that she needed to organize a last-minute activity for the day after July Fourth.

So, she reached out to Outback Team Building and Training to see if there was anything we could do to   help   - in less than three business days . We were happy to be able to help offer her some peace of mind over her holiday weekend by recommending a quick and easy solution: a   Code Break   team building activity. It was ready to go in less than three days, the activity organized was stress-free during her Fourth of July weekend, and, most importantly, all employees had a great experience.

At Outback Team Building and Training, we know our customers don’t always have time on their side when it comes to planning and executing an event. Sometimes, they need answers right away so they can get to work on creating an unforgettable experience for their colleagues.

This was exactly the case when Black & McDonald approached us about a learning and development session that would meet the needs of their unique group, and not take too much time to plan. At 10:20 a.m., the organization reached out with an online inquiry. By 10:50 a.m., they had   been connected with   one of our training facilitators for a more in-depth conversation regarding their objectives.

Three weeks later, a group of 14   Toronto, Ontario -based Black & McDonald employees took part in a half-day tailor-made training program that was built around the objectives of the group, including topics such as emotional intelligence and influence, communication styles, and the value of vulnerability in a leader.

When Conexus Credit Union contacted us on a Friday afternoon asking if we could facilitate a team building event for six employees the following Monday morning, we said, “Absolutely!”

The team at Conexus Credit Union were looking for an activity that would get the group’s mind going and promote collaboration between colleagues. And we knew just what to recommend:   Code Break Express   – an activity filled with brainteasers, puzzles, and riddles designed to test the group’s mental strength.

The Express version of Code Break was ideal for Conexus Credit Union’s shorter time frame because our Express activities have fewer challenges and can be completed in an hour or less. They’re   self-hosted,   so the company’s group organizer was able to easily and efficiently run the activity on their own.

To learn more about how we were able to come together and make this awesome event happen,   take a look   at our case study:   A Perfect Group Activity Organized in One Business Day .

4 Team Building Experiences to Create a Harmonizing Team

Team building experience helps organizations create a positive company culture, align employees with shared values, and improve communication among employees.

A report suggests that the number of companies investing in virtual team building has risen by 2,500, and why wouldn't it? A Gallup study has reported that an engaged team can show immense productivity and record a 23% in profitability showcasing the need to invest in generating team building experience. Take the Bills and Gates Melinda Organization for example.

They aim to enhance the well-being of billions of people globally and they achieve this by supporting initiatives in healthcare, education, and poverty reduction.

So, as a philanthropic organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has a long history of charitable and philanthropic work. Therefore, to come up with a unique team building experience that resonates with the employees in a meaningful way, they collaborated with Outback.

They quickly came up with an activity called 'the Bookworm Builders' for this event. There were small teams of two or three, and the group members collaboratively constructed bookshelves for underprivileged children. Each team designed and built a unique shelf, which was then donated by the organization to Treehouse, a local non-profit dedicated to supporting the education of foster youth.

This initiative provided a valuable opportunity for each team to work together, express their creativity, and contribute to the educational development of local children in a meaningful way. This small event helped them collaborate, communicate, and be understanding of each other.

With the Gallup research showing that “concentrating on employee engagement can help companies withstand, and possibly even thrive, in tough economic times,” it is important to create an engaging team-building experience. This article will explain different types of team building experiences, how to create a good one, and more for your better understanding.

What is a team building experience?

A team building experience is a planned activity or program that helps a group of colleagues work together more effectively. These activities can involve games, challenges, or discussions designed to improve communication, trust, and problem-solving skills among team members.

Team building experiences play a valuable role in shaping a positive corporate culture. When elicited rightly, these activities provide opportunities for employees to,

  • Collaborate outside the pressures of everyday work.
  • Fosters better communication, trust, and understanding among colleagues.
  • Improve their problem-solving skills and develop a stronger sense of camaraderie.

Ultimately, these positive team dynamics contribute to a more productive and enjoyable work environment for everyone.

What are the different types of team-building experiences?

Team-building experiences can take a variety of formats to enhance collaboration and communication within a group. These include:

  • Outdoor activities : Engaging in physical activities outside the workplace fosters teamwork in a new environment.
  • Indoor challenges : Problem-solving exercises conducted indoors can encourage creative thinking and communication within a team.
  • Workshops and seminars: Educational sessions focused on teamwork and communication skills can provide valuable knowledge and tools.
  • Volunteering and community service: Working together for a charitable cause can build camaraderie and social responsibility within a team.
  • Team Retreats: Spending dedicated time away from the usual work environment allows teams to focus on collaboration and team development.

How to create a team-building experience?

Effective teamwork is essential for any organization's success. Following is how you can create a successful team-building experience:

1. Identify your objectives

Begin by defining the desired outcome of the team-building activity. Are you aiming to improve communication? Strengthen problem-solving skills? Or perhaps boost overall team morale? A clearly defined objective will guide your selection of activities and ensure the experience is focused and productive.

2. Know your team

Consider the size, personalities, and interests of your team members. This will help you choose an activity that is both engaging and accessible to everyone.  For instance, an introverted team might benefit more from a collaborative problem-solving challenge, while an extroverted group might enjoy a high-energy activity that encourages active participation.

3. Plan the timeline

Determine the timeframe for the team-building experience. Will it be a short activity integrated into a regular meeting, a dedicated half-day event to allow for in-depth exploration or a multi-day retreat for a more immersive experience? The ideal timeframe depends on your goals and your team's availability.

4. Select the best activity

Choose an activity that aligns with your goals and is suitable for your team. There are numerous options available, from creative brainstorming sessions to strategic escape rooms or collaborative games. Consider activities that encourage interaction and communication, while also providing opportunities for team members to discover and utilize each other's strengths.

5. Align with team values

Ensure the chosen activity reflects the team's core values and fosters a sense of shared purpose.  For example, if your team prioritizes innovation, consider a design thinking challenge.  A team focused on client satisfaction might benefit from a role-playing exercise that simulates client interactions. Aligning the activity with team values reinforces these values and strengthens the team's identity.

6. Promote inclusivity

Make sure everyone feels comfortable participating, regardless of background or skill level. Offer options for different abilities and encourage open communication. This might involve providing clear instructions, breaking down complex tasks into smaller steps, or offering alternative ways to contribute. An inclusive environment ensures everyone feels valued and fosters a stronger sense of team spirit.

7. Reflection is key

After the activity, hold a discussion to reflect on the experience.  What were the key takeaways? How can these learnings be applied to future teamwork?  Encourage honest feedback and open discussion to solidify the learnings and translate them into actionable steps for improved collaboration within the team. By reflecting on the experience, you can ensure that the team-building activity has a lasting positive impact.

What are a few team-building experience ideas?

Some effective team-building experience ideas include:

1. Volunteer activity: Organize an opportunity for team members to work together for a social cause. This will build camaraderie and a sense of shared purpose.

2. Collaborative scavenger hunt: Plan a scavenger hunt that requires teamwork and problem-solving skills. This will encourage communication and collaboration among team members.

3. Professional development workshops: Host workshops or seminars on skill development, industry trends, or leadership. These sessions will allow team members to learn from each other and build relationships.

4. Group sporting event : Organize a sporting event or activity for the team, such as a tournament or a casual game. This can help to break the ice and promote bonding among team members.

Case studies

Following are the two case studies to showcase the significance of generating team building experience.

1. Amazon organize a thrilling scavenger hunt for 30 employees in Milan for enhanced employee engagement

Amazon needs no introduction, and its approach to establishing employee engagement has always remained unique. Amazon recently was planning a conference in Milan and desired a "fun Scavenger Hunt" for their 30 employees.

Since these employees didn't frequently work together, the goal was to create a team-building activity that would encourage exploration of the new city. Meanwhile, they wanted to foster camaraderie and connections within the group. Considering budget constraints for the conference's social events, a cost-effective solution was also a key factor. So, they collaborated with Wildgoose.

Wildgoose proposed a perfect team-building activity for Amazon in Milan. They designed a Self-Managed Milan City Explorer Challenge; a high-tech scavenger hunts accessible through a mobile app on attendees' smartphones.

The content creators at Wildgoose crafted unique challenges around Milan's history, culture, and landmarks. Teams navigated the city centre using the app, encountering trivia questions, photo opportunities, and interactions with locals.

This activity fostered team bonding while allowing participants to experience the beauty of Milan. The teams used the app to form groups, download the software, and access the challenges. A live map guided them throughout the city.  An event manager monitored the activity online, scoring photos and videos, and keeping teams engaged.

Nearing the end, the manager prompted teams to return to a designated finish point. A countdown timer added excitement as teams raced to complete final challenges.  Afterward, the client received links to a photo/video presentation and final scores to celebrate the winning team.

Clients thoroughly enjoyed exploring the city through our engaging and interactive team challenge. The user-friendly app, accessible on personal devices, allowed Wildgoose to offer a flexible and cost-effective solution that maintained high attendee participation.  Furthermore, the remote support team ensured the client's confidence and provided the necessary guidance for a smooth, self-managed experience.

2. Deloitte holds exceptional team building experience to encourage a shared sense of community

Deloitte , a multinational professional services network wanted to hold a thrilling event. They aimed to create a fun and engaging experience for all 140 employees, including a significant number of recent additions to their team.  The ideal event would encourage participation from everyone and provide a refreshing change of scenery by taking place outside of the office environment.

Deloitte sought The Big Smoke's assistance in planning a celebratory event for their summer party. The scavenger hunt proved to be the ideal solution for Deloitte's summer celebration. The Big Smoke designed a personalized hunt featuring challenging cryptic clues, puzzles tailored to their company, and activities that resulted in humorous video footage. This experience served as the perfect way to initiate their summer festivities.

This event provided a fun and engaging experience that fostered creativity and teamwork. More importantly, it allowed colleagues who may not have had prior opportunities for social interaction, gel properly with each other. It successfully removed participants from their usual work environment and encouraged collaboration, laughter, and a shared sense of enjoyment.

Conclusion

Team building experiences significantly contribute to employee engagement as it helps foster a sense of friendship, trust, and collaboration among coworkers. These activities help employees develop stronger relationships, which in turn leads to improved communication, problem-solving, and overall job satisfaction. Effective Team Building Case Studies & Insights

rebuilding-teams-after-layoffs

If you think team building is just a corporate icebreaker, think again. Nearly 75% of employers say teamwork and collaboration are vital.

However, only 18% of staff are evaluated on communication during reviews. This gap highlights a big chance to better team building in companies.

As a Team Building Facilitator on workplace culture, I’ve seen how team building case studies can change how a team works.

Insights into Communication Styles and Conflict Resolution

Team-building exercises are great for checking out different ways to talk to each other. They teach us to chat better and fix disagreements in a peaceful way. It’s the small changes in how we communicate that help a team go from okay to great.

Creating Effective Team Building Experiences Across Global Corporations

Cultural Considerations in Team Dynamics

Tailored Team Building for Specific Challenges and Opportunities

Identifying a company’s unique needs and crafting special team building plans is key. It’s amazing how focusing on specific challenges changes team dynamics. This leads to great project results.

Looking at case studies of companies overcoming interdepartmental barriers is enlightening. One effective approach involved cross-training sessions .

These sessions let employees learn about their colleagues’ roles in other departments.

Understanding each other’s work brought employees closer. It created a feeling of unity and shared goals.

Strategies for High-Stakes Project Teams

High-stakes projects need exactness, hard work, and everyone working smoothly together. Including team building activities throughout the project helps improve efficiency. Meeting tight deadlines becomes easier without sacrificing quality.

For example, team retreats with workshops on communication and stress relief boost team performance under stress. I’ve seen these retreats make a big difference in how a team handles pressure.

Challenge Strategy Outcome
Interdepartmental Silos Cross-Training Sessions Enhanced Interdepartmental Communication and Collaboration
High-Stakes Projects Targeted Retreats and Workshops Improved Performance and Stress Management

In my work with various industries, I’ve seen first-hand how these approaches bring strong benefits. Proactively using these strategies significantly boosts team dynamics and project success.

Truly, grasping the unique challenges of a team is crucial for effective team building.

Case Study: When Two Leaders on the Senior Team Hate Each Other

  • Boris Groysberg
  • Katherine Connolly Baden

case study on team building with solution

How should a CEO address friction between his CFO and the sales chief?

In this fictional case, the CEO of a sports apparel manufacturer is faced with an ongoing conflict between two of his top executives. Specifically, the head of sales and the CFO are at each other’s throats and the tension is having a ripple effect on their teams and the rest of the organization. The CEO, who tends to avoid conflict himself, is struggling with how to respond. His options include changing the company compensation scheme to encourage better collaboration, firing the two leaders, getting them each a coach, and doing more team building activities.

The feedback in the 360-degree reviews was supposed to be anonymous. But it was crystal clear who’d made the negative comments in the assessment of one executive.

Case Study- Microsoft: Team Building and Group Dynamics

Creating and fostering a culture of teamwork requires trust, collaboration, and accountability.  Forty exceptional employees, six short months, and the responsibility to one reputable Fortune 100 company: That is what Darci Kleindl was handed when she accepted a job as the general manager of sales excellence and sales enablement for the Microsoft Business Solutions (MBS) group. She inherited a global team of customer support managers, all of whom work with diverse clientele, including engineers, marketing organisations, consultants, and external customers. She also manages a team of leaders who drive worldwide standards for sales basics, internal and external readiness, and the business rhythm and communications to accelerate the MBS group.

case study on team building with solution

To add to the chaos, this group, which had operated autonomously within Microsoft, faced a large organisational shift when she started: “Our enterprise and small business teams integrated our CRM solutions into the overall business strategy and execution. It took our work from a priority state of 4 to 9 overnight,” she says.

As daunting as her situation seemed, Kleindl wasn’t new to managing dynamic groups or governing complex situations. Her career often has included strategising on the higher executive level. This time, however, would be different. She planned to implement a comprehensive leadership and team development programme that would transform her work culture and provide a foundational structure for her team.

Strategising for success Kleindl was resolute in making a lasting impact. “What happens so often is people do a one-time hit when it comes to team and leadership development. People are put in one class and we expect it to change their world overnight,” she explains.

Her vision involved stabilising a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability—one that would resonate beyond just her direct reports. To do this, she sought the help of a trusted advisor—Bruce Leamon, an authorised partner of The Five Behaviours of a Cohesive Team —who jumped at the opportunity.

“Darci understands that you can have great products, you can have phenomenal software, you can have the smartest people, but if they’re not playing together, it’s never going to get you ahead,” Leamon says. “I recommended that she use The Five Behaviours; it’s the operating system for teamwork. Once that’s established you have a framework to build from.”

The Five Behaviours of a Cohesive Team is a comprehensive team development programme based on the work of Patrick Lencioni. It helps both team members and leaders understand how their unique group dynamic can work together to build a more effective team and achieve sustainable results.

The facilitated sessions help teams to comprehend where they fall within five distinct pillars of teamwork: trust, conflict, commitment, accountability, and results. It uses the Everything DiSC behavioural assessment to establish a neutral language and help participants have productive conversations to develop within these five competency areas.

With The Five Behaviours as the foundation, Kleindl and Leamon quickly developed the Organisational Capital Programme. The six-month programme establishes a common language for the team to communicate, standardise expectations to improve accountability, strengthen leadership abilities, and create an emotionally intelligent culture.

“I wanted to give my colleagues an end-to-end picture of who they are, from their own understanding as well as from other people’s perspective—to learn that maybe you have a dominant personality style and be able to understand how that relates to your emotional intelligence or to your leadership skills,” Kleindl explains.

The team training session Thirty-six tentative colleagues participated in the two-day, off-site training session. Leamon started by establishing conversation based on vulnerability-based trust. Before they could get into discussions on dealing with conflict, their collective idea of commitment, or holding one another accountable, the team needed to trust that what they were saying would be respected and heard. They shared personal backgrounds to learn about one another’s perspectives and how they might relate to their colleagues in ways beyond work. They spoke candidly on what makes them comfortable and uncomfortable in a work environment. They discussed their team’s core values and their vision for themselves and the company.

“It allowed us to understand who people are. Combined with information from DiSC , we could establish a common language and move swiftly through the rest of the programme,” Leamon says.

The impact The Organisational Capital Programme is built on the lessons learned from that initial The Five Behaviours session. The impact seen within the MBS group has been multifaceted, explains Kleindl. “I think this team has increased in visibility substantially as far as what they do and the impact. Our relationship network has grown, systems have been put in place to help with productivity, our planning is more succinct, and the team is connecting more one-on-one with people to explain their roles.”

In terms of accountability, there was a notable shift. “They’ve come to understand that they don’t always have to say ‘yes.’ … They trust each other and understand how to have healthy conflict when situations are off-loaded to us that really should not be our job in the first place. We’re clear on what we’re accountable for.”

The Five Behaviours is a reliable tool that helped lay the foundation for further development. But a large reason why it was successful was because people felt heard. “I got emails from people saying, ‘No one has ever invested in me in this way. It’s fantastic!’” That sort of investment in individuals served well for Kleindl, her team, and also the network beyond her team. The MBS group now has a reputation for sustaining an enviable culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability.

Executive Coaching - Merged Organizations

Two organizations merged together with a new CEO put in place. The new organization was lacking a common vision and infrastructure consistency. No change management and an overwhelmed CEO.

Executive coaching helped the CEO develop clear priorities for the organization as well as a change management plan that helped align staff members with the organizational changes. A planning committee was constructed that enabled the development of a strategic business plan. The plan incorporated a new vision and mission statement for the merged organization.

“Kate is a skilled coach and mentor. She works with you to develop an approach that is unique to your individual needs and interests. I have known and worked with Kate for a number of years. She has been my leadership coach as well as primary support on various organizational projects, which include: organizational development, change leadership and strategic business planning. I am grateful for her support. Because of Kate and our work together, I am a better leader, staff members are more engaged, and we are better prepared for our future."

A Vice President of a large organization solicited KickStart to develop a team building program to help address communication issues and team inefficiencies.

Upon initial consult, KickStart recommended further investigation into the situation. We conducted personal interviews with team members and stakeholders and discovered that the issues went beyond communication. Significant trust issues with the leadership team and lack of direction was causing the team to be competitive and dysfunctional.

KickStart developed a custom workshop that exposed the challenges being faced by the team. In addition, the workshop addressed style differences and leadership gaps. Activities focused on the development of team protocols and a plan for addressing team challenges and development opportunities.

“DISC helped us gain awareness of our style differences. The activities helped us learn to adjust our style when working with others. We developed good protocols for working together in the future."

Workshop Participant

Leadership Training and Application

A local scaffolding firm approached KickStart to develop a training program for their foremen and supervisors. There were inconsistencies in how staff were managed, how company representatives were interfacing with customers and how company policies were being carried out.

KickStart conducted interviews with the company’s leadership team to better understand company policies and the challenges being faced with their direct reports. A significant amount of time was spent becoming familiar with the company culture. A 3-day program was developed that focused on: leadership, personnel management, and managing projects. Participants walked away with a diploma and a fundamental understanding of company expectations.

“Working with Bob & Kate is one of the 3 best things I have done since taking over this company. Adult education, particularly with this level employee is challenging to make effective and significant. Their interactive learning process … was outstanding to observe and participate in. The effectiveness could visibly be measured by seeing how engaged even the most resistant ‘old-dogs, who know it all!’ became…… and we have plenty of them!”

Roger Jetton, President & CEO, Scaffolding Solutions, LLC

Leadership Immersion

A large corporate client engaged KickStart to develop a full-day leadership immersion program for their new managers. The goal was for the participants to experience leadership in a completely unfamiliar setting, while leading unknown teams to complete tasks.

KickStart developed a full-day program of experiential leadership activities and exercises designed to test participant’s leadership skills. The program featured opportunities for each manager to lead an activity, then to receive feedback on their leadership style and how well they led their team, along with a self-reflection of things done well and areas for improvement. Debriefs focused on after action reviews, DISC styles, leadership principles, and values in action.

This day-long immersion into experiential activities was consistently rated as one of the highlights of the week-long training.

Team Trust Issues

A state agency director engaged KickStart to determine if his large staff had any personality issues or team conflicts. He suspected there may be some trust issues among the team members as well.

KickStart interviewed each team member anonymously to understand the magnitude of the issues. Following the interviews, which pointed out some bigger trust issues resulting from style differences and misperceptions, KickStart recommended that each team member complete a personality assessment. We provided a DISC overview that allowed individuals to recognize style differences in others, then utilized team building activities that leveraged the differences in styles and allowed individuals to work together in an informal setting away from the office.

This workshop provided personal growth and learning around styles and style differences, perceptions of other styles, and a common de-personalized language for communicating to minimize conflicts. Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive.

Team Building

The Director of a local hospital asked KickStart to provide a team building program that allowed two different shifts to get to know each other and bond while having a fun outdoor experience. The two shifts had been operating as their own entities with little total team identity.

KickStart chose outdoor activities at a local park that got team members out of their familiar setting, built on the theme of seeing themselves as one team, and that gave participants a chance to work across shifts to get to know each other.

The team building program gave participants a chance to get to know everyone better while working with each other very differently than they do at work. They all agreed that the day was fun and fulfilling, and vowed to have sessions more often.

Team Building & Community Service

Evergreen Enterprises approached KickStart to create a fun team-building activity for their national sales meeting of over 200 people from all over the country.

After discovering that giving back to the community was a high priority with this client, KickStart recommended a bike building activity that would be challenging and fun, and would provide fully assembled kid’s bikes to be donated to a local charity.

The bike building activity was fast-paced, loud, and fun. The most fun was seeing grown adults riding kids’ bikes through a participant-designed obstacle course, while their teammates cheered for them. To top off the event, the Marines showed up to thank the team for their contribution of bikes and helmets to Toys For Tots.

The Desert Survival Team Building Exercise

Desert Survival Situation™

Research and development by J. Clayton Lafferty, Ph.D., in consultation with Alonzo W. Pond, Survival Expert

Unlock the secret of team synergy with one of the most widely used exercises for team building and group development in the world.

The  Desert Survival Situation  is now available in both paper and digital format and is great for building new teams, enhancing team development, and improving problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Do your teams have what it takes to survive?

Get a Demo of the Digital Desert Survival Situation

The new digital format of the desert survival scenario is similar to that of Subarctic. Both of these digital simulations can be used for virtual as well as in-person team-building sessions.

The Desert Situation

“It is approximately 10 o’clock in the morning on a mid-August day and you have just crash-landed in the Sonoran Desert in the southwestern United States.”

Your task is to rank 15 items salvaged from the plane in the order of their importance to your team’s survival.” In the desert survival exercise, the plane crash is imagined, but the need for problem-solving is very real.

Situated in an unfamiliar location, the desert survival plane crash scenario sets the stage for a team-building activity that  takes the participants outside of their organizational roles and areas of expertise. The simulation transports them to a situation where only their synergistic problem-solving skills–task, interpersonal, and rational–will help them to survive.

“An outstanding way to prove the point that teams outperform individuals is to engage people in an exercise like Desert Survival…. The teams almost always outperform the individuals and, if they do not, the reason can usually be traced to poor functioning of the team.” Excerpt from: The 3 Keys to Empowerment, Ken Blanchard, John P. Carlos, and Alan Randolph

How does the desert survival scenario work?

The  Desert Survival Situation  provides a unique opportunity to quickly and objectively measure whether your groups are achieving synergy. Synergy occurs when the interactive efforts of two or more people produce a solution that is superior to their independent solutions. The Desert Survival Situation is perfect for demonstrating this elusive concept.

By measuring the quality of both individual and team performance on the task of ranking the 15 items, groups are able to quickly calculate the extent to which they fully utilized their skills and resources–and did  so in a way that achieved synergy and enhanced team development.

“Finally, the best thinking very often results from a team effort. With few exceptions, repeated research has established that groups are usually better than individuals at solving problems where no one has deep or relevant experience…. A forceful example is an exercise called the Desert Survival Situation.” Excerpt from: Adhocracy, Robert H. Waterman, Jr.

What are the benefits for your organization?

  • Demonstrates the need to increase commitment to team building and team development.
  • Establishes a constructive, team-oriented atmosphere in the workplace, at conferences or workshops, and in classrooms or training programs.

Setting clear expectations with competency modeling: case study.

Cubes of cartoon people leading back to one yellow cube. Teammates are connected to leader.

Nesnah Ventures is a family-owned private equity firm that provides financial, administrative and strategic support to all of its operating companies. The organization owns six companies in the agriculture and/or service sectors: Burrachos Fresh Mexican Grill, Venture Fuels, Coda Bow, Unifide CST Scale Systems, Star Blends and Nesnah Properties. Since each company is unlike the next, the talent pool is diverse with a range of roles and specialties, from a caterer to an in-office employee and technician. Lisa Paulson, the learning and development (L&D) manager at Nesnah Ventures, oversees training and development for the entire firm.

Paulson is the sole L&D practitioner in the human resources (HR) department, which consists of seven HR professionals each tasked with different responsibilities in talent management. As the L&D leader of Nesnah, Paulson is tasked with aligning training to business strategy, ensuring the workforce has the skills needed to contribute toward achieving sustainable success. This is how she recognized the organization’s need to determine and define the specific skills and proficiencies needed to fulfill new roles and move internally within the company. In this case study, we’ll review a real-life example of how Nesnah Ventures built a competency model from scratch to provide clear career pathways within the company, promoting leadership development, higher employee retention and increased engagement for the business.

A Case Study of Nesnah Ventures

Competency models are frameworks that identify and define the skills and knowledge expected within a particular role. For an employee to move up the ladder, they must be proficient in these expected behaviors and skills. And many times, they are expected to go above and beyond. This was the case for some of the high-potential contributors at Nesnah Ventures. These employees were interested in being promoted and felt as if their performance aligned with their job description and the company’s expectations. However, this wasn’t the case.

They were completing the tasks and functions based on what they were assigned, however, despite these efforts, they weren’t able to move up a level. This misalignment in expectations caused a lot of confusion and frustration for both employees and their managers. This was especially the case during one on ones when conducting performance discussions. The lack of defined competencies also created confusion in C-suite. Leadership had different opinions on how many and what type of skills were relevant to certain roles, causing inconsistencies of expectations across the organization.

There also wasn’t an established method for identifying high-potential employees for succession planning. As a result, employees were beginning to leave the company to find growth and career development opportunities elsewhere. Nesnah Ventures hadn’t clearly defined what specific skills employees needed to fulfill more challenging roles. These expectations for career growth weren’t officially determined or documented, so for some employees, having a long-term future with Nesnah seemed unattainable.

The Solution: Building a Competency Model

Paulson recognized this dip in the talent pool, and that it was the same employees who were turned down for a promotion. As the solution, Paulson decided to build a competency model for her organization. The framework was called “expectations model” since the skills and behaviors listed in the model were company expectations of how to perform in each role. Within the model, there’d be “role cards,” which listed the specific skills required for that particular job role. The role cards would be accessible via Nesnah Ventures’s human resources information system (HRIS) self-serve portal, which employees would also be able to access via a mobile app.

Paulson’s objective for creating the model was to give employees and managers a tool to conduct better performance conversations, clarify role expectations and identify high-potential employees who could fulfill a leadership role with proper training and development. That way, employees could have a clear roadmap to moving up in the company, and leaders have a better way of explaining the steps to reaching those career goals.

Methodology and Implementation

When starting the process of building the role cards for the expectations model, Paulson says they didn’t officially define what success would look like because they weren’t sure where they were going with the project. It was the first time the company had created a competency model, so they were agile in their approach. However, the main indicator that Paulson was looking for were more candid and open conversations about performance. This impact could be seen through higher employee performance rates as well as a decrease in employee attrition as entry-level employees aspiring to move up receive a clear pathway to their career goals.

After evaluating the organization’s management levels, Paulson determined that the company had three different job levels. The first level included managers/supervisors, the second level included mid-level managers and executives fell into the third level. This categorization of managerial levels helped Nesnah Ventures determine competencies that should be consistent for each manager level across the organization.

Here’s an example of a role card that shows the job level, title and associated competencies:

case study on team building with solution

Here are the steps Paulson took to develop their organization’s competency model:

  • Planning : They researched existing competency models from other companies and adapted elements from existing frameworks to support the creation of their own unique model, tailored for their organization’s needs. A lot of meetings were held with executive level leaders and management to gain multiple viewpoints. They met with employee groups, too, to gather data on what they’d like to see and what would help them in having performance discussions and knowing what these role expectations are. This process helped create organization-wide expectations.
  • Defining : “Leading self and others in the organization” is an established term for the company, meaning that everyone is a leader, it just depends on which kind at that moment. Paulson used this terminology to hone in on how the company identified and defined “leading self and others” and what that looks like. This was to unify everyone’s separate definition and perspective of what those words meant, connecting it to the business’s expectations. Paulson mentions that the process of defining was the longest step because it was foundational and set the tone for the program.
  • Creating : From there they met with each leader of a functional area of business and talked about every single role and what the expectations were. The first couple of meetings weren’t as successful as Paulson hoped since leaders weren’t necessarily sure where to begin with describing each specific role. As a solution, Paulson did some pre-work by creating possible expectations to give leaders a starting point. This turned out to be very helpful, enabling them to clarify and articulate what these competencies and behaviors look like. During this process, there was a lot of debate between the word skills and competencies. Since a lot of these expectations could be either behavioral, skills or knowledge-based, they found it more appropriate to consider them as expectations. Employees were also hesitant to the term “competency model.” However, when they heard “role card” and “expectations” they felt much more at ease.
  • Implementing : The project took approximately a year to complete, with six months dedicated to meeting with managers and executives to go through different iterations. Besides the collective perspectives sought from leadership, Paulson was the only one working on the project, so that also had a factor with completion time.
  • Evaluation : To ensure program success, Paulson set up one-on-one meetings and group meetings with leadership to solicit feedback. In-person meetings are preferable to company managers, so they tend to avoid surveys for gathering data.

Challenges and Encounters

The vision for the role cards changed a few times after deployment after having conversations with different groups of stakeholders. The model had to be modified a few times, which was a challenge since it required constant pivoting to incorporate new information. Another issue was creating different definitions for the same competencies based on that particular team, role and industry. For example, the expectations for digital skills may look different for a team of accountants versus a sales team, and as a result, will need to be worded and defined accordingly.

Lastly, the library of competencies was becoming too long. As a solution, Paulson revisited the role card with leaders to see which competencies could be made into one. To ensure buy in throughout the process, Paulson kept leadership closely involved and informed, giving them a hand in the revisions. A maximum number of six competencies per card was also established to prevent leaders from going overboard.

Business Results and Outcomes

Thanks to the role cards, employees are more empowered to conduct performance discussions with their supervisors. They are also more confident in their future with the company with a clear road to success. Every role card is made accessible to Nesnah Ventures’s people, providing all employees with the opportunity to fulfill any of the roles within the firm, promoting continuous internal mobility and career development.

4. How WOW! is Saving Nearly 79% in Time and Cost With Visme

This case study discusses how Visme helped WOW! save time and money by providing user-friendly tools to create interactive and quality training materials for their employees. Find out what your team can do with Visme. Request a Demo

WOW!'s learning and development team creates high-quality training materials for new and existing employees. Previous tools and platforms they used had plain templates, little to no interactivity features, and limited flexibility—that is, until they discovered Visme.

Now, the learning and development team at WOW! use Visme to create engaging infographics, training videos, slide decks and other training materials.

This has directly reduced the company's turnover rate, saving them money spent on recruiting and training new employees. It has also saved them a significant amount of time, which they can now allocate to other important tasks.

Visme's customer testimonials spark an emotional connection with the reader, leaving a profound impact. Upon reading this case study, prospective customers will be blown away by the remarkable efficiency achieved by Visme's clients after switching from PowerPoint.

Visme’s interactivity feature was a game changer for WOW! and one of the primary reasons they chose Visme.

“Previously we were using PowerPoint, which is fine, but the interactivity you can get with Visme is so much more robust that we’ve all steered away from PowerPoint.” - Kendra, L&D team, Wow!

Visme’s interactive feature allowed them to animate their infographics, include clickable links on their PowerPoint designs and even embed polls and quizzes their employees could interact with.

By embedding the slide decks, infographics and other training materials WOW! created with Visme, potential customers get a taste of what they can create with the tool. This is much more effective than describing the features of Visme because it allows potential customers to see the tool in action.

To top it all off, this case study utilized relevant data and figures. For example, one part of the case study said, “In Visme, where Kendra’s team has access to hundreds of templates, a brand kit, and millions of design assets at their disposal, their team can create presentations in 80% less time.”

Who wouldn't want that?

Including relevant figures and graphics in your case study is a sure way to convince your potential customers why you’re a great fit for their brand. The case study template below is a great example of integrating relevant figures and data.

UX Case Study

This colorful template begins with a captivating headline. But that is not the best part; this template extensively showcases the results their customer had using relevant figures.

The arrangement of the results makes it fun and attractive. Instead of just putting figures in a plain table, you can find interesting shapes in your Visme editor to take your case study to the next level.

5. Lyte Reduces Customer Churn To Just 3% With Hubspot CRM

Case Study Examples

While Lyte was redefining the ticketing industry, it had no definite CRM system . Lyte utilized 12–15 different SaaS solutions across various departments, which led to a lack of alignment between teams, duplication of work and overlapping tasks.

Customer data was spread across these platforms, making it difficult to effectively track their customer journey. As a result, their churn rate increased along with customer dissatisfaction.

Through Fuelius , Lyte founded and implemented Hubspot CRM. Lyte's productivity skyrocketed after incorporating Hubspot's all-in-one CRM tool. With improved efficiency, better teamwork and stronger client relationships, sales figures soared.

The case study title page and executive summary act as compelling entry points for both existing and potential customers. This overview provides a clear understanding of the case study and also strategically incorporates key details like the client's industry, location and relevant background information.

Having a good summary of your case study can prompt your readers to engage further. You can achieve this with a simple but effective case study one-pager that highlights your customer’s problems, process and achievements, just like this case study did in the beginning.

Moreover, you can easily distribute your case study one-pager and use it as a lead magnet to draw prospective customers to your company.

Take a look at this case study one-pager template below.

Ecommerce One Pager Case Study

This template includes key aspects of your case study, such as the introduction, key findings, conclusion and more, without overcrowding the page. The use of multiple shades of blue gives it a clean and dynamic layout.

Our favorite part of this template is where the age group is visualized.

With Visme’s data visualization tool , you can present your data in tables, graphs, progress bars, maps and so much more. All you need to do is choose your preferred data visualization widget, input or import your data and click enter!

6. How Workato Converts 75% of Their Qualified Leads

Case Study Examples

Workato wanted to improve their inbound leads and increase their conversion rate, which ranged from 40-55%.

At first, Workato searched for a simple scheduling tool. They soon discovered that they needed a tool that provided advanced routing capabilities based on zip code and other criteria. Luckily, they found and implemented Chili Piper.

As a result of implementing Chili Piper, Workato achieved a remarkable 75–80% conversion rate and improved show rates. This led to a substantial revenue boost, with a 10-15% increase in revenue attributed to Chili Piper's impact on lead conversion.

This case study example utilizes the power of video testimonials to drive the impact of their product.

Chili Piper incorporates screenshots and clips of their tool in use. This is a great strategy because it helps your viewers become familiar with how your product works, making onboarding new customers much easier.

In this case study example, we see the importance of efficient Workflow Management Systems (WMS). Without a WMS, you manually assign tasks to your team members and engage in multiple emails for regular updates on progress.

However, when crafting and designing your case study, you should prioritize having a good WMS.

Visme has an outstanding Workflow Management System feature that keeps you on top of all your projects and designs. This feature makes it much easier to assign roles, ensure accuracy across documents, and track progress and deadlines.

Visme’s WMS feature allows you to limit access to your entire document by assigning specific slides or pages to individual members of your team. At the end of the day, your team members are not overwhelmed or distracted by the whole document but can focus on their tasks.

7. Rush Order Helps Vogmask Scale-Up During a Pandemic

10 Critical thinking exercises to keep your team sharp

case study on team building with solution

Sometimes common sense doesn’t seem so common. In an increasingly digital age, it’s important that people can form their own opinions and problem solve using the facts at hand - otherwise known as critical thinking.

When everyone on your team is able to think critically, you’re more likely to have improved collaboration and cooperation, problem solve quickly, and make better decisions. While common sense isn’t really something that can be learned - critical thinking definitely is. Business leaders and smart managers will find that investing in critical thinking improvement is always worth their time. Here are some of our favorite critical thinking exercises to help your work team enhance their cognitive skills.

10 Critical thinking exercises for work teams

What is a critical thinking exercise, anyway? Simply put, they are activities designed to help people build and flex their brain muscle. Having better critical thinking capability is helpful in many areas, both personally, and professionally. When it comes to the workforce specifically, critical thinking helps with comprehending or analyzing data, problem solving, breaking down abstract ideas - and generally working smarter, not harder.

If you feel like your team could use a boost in these areas, why not pull them together for some fun and engaging critical thinking exercise?

1. Explain the problem

You can’t solve a problem that you don’t understand fully. Many times, this is why proposed solutions don’t end up working - they’re not addressing the real issue at hand. To help with that, try this activity with your team. Come up with a problem for them to solve. It can be a generic “what if” scenario, or a specific case study for a real client. If there is a problem you all have been challenged with for a while, you might start there. Explain everything clearly, and then have the next person explain to the group as well. Did they capture the correct information? Do they have a clear understanding of what the issues are? Then have the person they explained to pass along the information. The goal isn’t for this to become a game of telephone, but to see if each person explaining truly comprehends the issue to such a degree that they can explain it to someone else. This exercise is great for not only critical thinking, but also communication skills and general problem solving. You never know, by the end of this session, you may have solved a problem that’s been plaguing you!

2. Work backwards

Few things in the workplace are as frustrating as working on a problem for a long time without coming to a conclusion. In many instances, people hit a form of mental block if they’ve been working on a certain challenge for a while without much forward momentum. In these cases, use this exercise to get everyone to think of things in a different way. A new perspective might be just what everyone needs. Rather than having all of your previous work and information in your mind, start with the end result that you want to achieve. For example, if you have been trying to get your sales team to adopt a new CRM system, but they aren’t using it, you might pause and figure out what the end goal really is. Why is it that you need them to use this CRM system? What are you trying to achieve? You’ll likely find that what you want is a system populated with accurate and consistent customer data. Once you know that this result is the true goal you need to reach, you might start thinking about other ways to get there. Maybe the CRM adoption isn’t the problem at all; maybe there is another reason the sales team isn’t using it. The point is: stop working under the pretenses you already labored under. Go straight to what you hope will happen and start working backwards to see what new scenarios you can uncover.

3. Develop a mind map

Visual aids can be a powerful tool when addressing new challenges or seeing things in a new way. One simple way to start is with a mind map that plots different outcomes based on different scenarios or arguments. It’s essentially one big “If this, then that” scenario, where you can get a visual understanding of what could potentially happen based on several different paths. As an example, let's say you’re trying to figure out if a troublesome client is worth keeping on. Map out a few different scenarios, such as “no, let them go”, “yes, keep them”, “keep them in a limited capacity”, etc. For each of these, address the potential outcomes and what those options might look like. It’s best to do this on a real or digital white board, or some people like to use several post-it notes that can be moved and placed where appropriate. This makes it easier to not only capture all of your options, but to consider some of the effects you may not have thought of before. Plus, it gives your team a great visual to return to for conversations.

4. Read - and read some more

Though this seems overly simple and not like an “exercise” at all, it’s great advice for nearly all teams. Reading various materials exposes everyone to new ideas, new concepts, and new perspectives. Plus, it’s an important way of making sure your brain gets at least some exercise every day. All types of reading are beneficial, from a morning newspaper to an in-depth historical novel. Choose some reading material that you’ve found particularly helpful, along with some that pertain to your industry or subject matter, and set them out in a resource section in the office. You might also consider starting a monthly book club or even a group message board where people can leave reviews, ask questions, and generally discuss reading material. If you want to take things a step further, create a reading challenge where people can get points and earn prizes for time spent reading.

5. Host a debate

Competitive debate is something many people are passionate about - but even for those who don’t particularly enjoy it, there are benefits. Organize your team into two groups and give them a topic to debate. We suggest avoiding topics that are overly sensitive like politics or hot-button cultural issues. Ideally, it’s a subject that’s new to both of them, so that no one has an unfair advantage. Give them time to complete some research and prepare their thoughts, and then debate with each other in good faith. This is great practice for creating more structured arguments and organizing a variety of information. We suggest avoiding topics that are overly sensitive like politics or hot-button cultural issues.

6. Learn about logical fallacies

In formal logic circles, experts have identified several common fallacies that tend to occur over and over in arguments. If you can learn about these, and be able to pick them out of arguments, you have a much better chance of thinking critically through an issue. You can find them in conversations or even your own thoughts, which adds a lot of value to intense discussions. You might host a workshop or a lunch and learn where these are covered in detail, and then have a quiz or engaging activity where arguments are presented and people must pick out the fallacies present.

Here are the most common logical fallacies:

  • Ad hominem: When a position is attacked based on an individual’s personal character or other attributes, rather than its own merit.
  • Non sequitur: When the conclusion of an argument doesn’t logically follow from the original premise.
  • Slippery slope: In this fallacy, someone asserts that a chain of extraneous events is bound to occur if they allow their opponent's argument.
  • Motte and Bailey: This happens when a debater defends a controversial position by intentionally confusing it with a similar but less controversial assertion.
  • Appeal to authority: This can often occur when an individual asserts the truth of their argument simply by citing an authoritative source.
  • Begging the question: This is a common fallacy in which an individual assumes the conclusion of their argument on their premises.

7. Ladder of inference exercise

Each of us naturally makes inferences as part of our human decision-making process, and understanding how we do that can be really helpful. Start by discussing a common scenario, and then write down the assumptions that might be used to draw conclusions. For example, if you see a professional contact at a networking event, but they turn away when they see you, what could that mean? Our brains immediately start to infer things, such as “They are mad at my company”, or “They don’t like me.” Have your team list out the possible reasons this could have happened, and then talk about other reasons that they did not automatically conclude. This is a great practice for helping people to think critically through everyday situations, rather than letting their own minds run away with them. For more problem solving games or team-building brain teasers , make sure to follow our blog.

8. The “Five Whys” technique

This is an analytical skill that can help people to  uncover the source of a problem. The core tenant of the concept is repeatedly asking “why?” when a problem is encountered to determine its root cause. You may need several rounds of questioning; just keep going. The most beneficial part that helps you practice critical thinking is the process of asking "why?" and uncovering the deeper issues affecting a situation. Here’s a simple example. Your computer keeps crashing. Why? Because the computer keeps running out of memory. Why? Because I have too many programs running at once. Why? Because I’m trying to multitask. Why? Etc. Come up with some scenarios and help your team to work through several scenarios as practice.

9. Practice inversion

This is a form of critical thinking that can be used in almost any situation, and involves playing the role of devil’s advocate in a situation. To try it, adopt the opposite view of whatever the general consensus is on an issue. This helps you to explore and also consider other options than the ones that immediately come to mind. For example, if you are considering developing a new product line, start by listing all of the reasons why that might be a bad idea (limited resources, too expensive, etc). Only when you clearly understand these potential negatives can you fully work through the pros and cons of such a decision.

10. Opinion vs. fact

Our current digital world makes it increasingly common to confuse opinions with facts. Sensationalist articles and click-bait headlines are huge contributors to this problem. It’s essential that your team can discern fact from opinion - in their personal and professional lives. Practice this skill by reading an article or listening to the news with your team, and having them go through each statement sharing what is opinion and what is fact. For example, “The DOW hit this number on Friday.” is a fact, while “This market is tremendous for stock-holders” is an opinion. You can even make copies of an article and have everyone use different colored highlighters to show what is fact vs. opinion.

How to Build a Successful Solution Architecture: Case Study

How to Build a Successful Solution Architecture: Case Study

What is solution architecture (in terms of software development)?

Software architecture design is a fundamental procedure for successful application development. It outlines and reasons the structure of the future app. Besides, solution architecture explains how all the application components will function together to achieve the desired result.

Solution architecture is defined during the project discovery phase as it sets the cornerstones for the upcoming application development. It considers all the functional and nonfunctional requirements to configure the most suitable tech solution for your business. Besides the current state of art, a well designed app architecture should allow some flexibility for future scaling and updates.

With all said above, it’s necessary to get the application architecture right before moving to the development. Architecture redesign is an extreme measure as it brings fundamental changes to the app which modify the IT infrastructure , possibly tech stack , features performance, etc., and requires high time and cost investment.

In this article you will find the practices we use at Apiko to successfully design software architecture. Moreover, here’s our website architecture example within the cloud architecture case study. Ready? Let’s begin!

Discover the secret to uninterrupted IT system excellence with Apiko's AWS Infrastructure Support Service. Say goodbye to downtime worries, poor user experiences, and unsatisfied clients.

What defines a successful solution architecture?

  • Usability : Achieve maximal accordance between the solution architecture and application functionality that it enables, and future app users’ and stakeholders’ needs and requirements.
  • Performance : Determine and allocate the right amount of computing resources that is necessary and enough to ensure flawless app performance and smooth user experience.
  • Cost efficiency : Define the level of app quality and performance which will be enough to satisfy your business needs. We clarify this data during the project discovery phase and summarize it in a form of app functional and nonfunctional requirements. Most often it’s possible to achieve a higher level of performance at a higher cost, so there’s a need to find the middle ground.
  • Reliability : Ensure that the application functions as it’s expected to at all times.
  • Security : Implement the protection mechanisms to prevent any data leakage and secure the application from possible malware attacks or other destructive activities.
  • Robustness for future updates and scaling : Both the business processes the application is built for and the technologies it is built with evolve with time. The overall app performance should not be affected by
  • the growing number of users
  • adding new app functionality
  • features updates
  • updates of any of the technologies the app is built with, etc.

Of course, it’s impossible to foresee all the innovations a solution may face, but it will be easier to implement them when the architecture is robust.

  • Simplicity : Aim for the simplest solution that will satisfy all of the above-mentioned criteria. Don’t get it wrong: if there are simpler solutions, but they will obviously lead to technical debt, they should be omitted. Just avoid extra architecture complexity when there is no need for it.

How to reach these criteria?

Follow the best practices . When it comes to developing cloud architecture, we refer to AWS best practices to create a well-architected solution.

Collaborate tightly with the development team to get a better understanding of the application logic. Analyze the business needs and requirements to come up with the best app architecture.

Pick the proven technologies . New tools emerge nearly on a daily basis, and their functionality often looks very promising. However, many of them get replaced with the newer ones or simply vanish with nearly the same speed. Pay attention to the size of the professional community around a certain technology, and the time since it’s been launched and successfully used. The higher these numbers are, the more certain is the future support of this technology.

Finding balance between a performant infrastructure and cost efficiency is one of the most challenging parts of solution architecture design. Software architecture for different projects includes different number of variable components and there is no one-fits-all solution.

What types of software architecture are there?

Based on the fundamental structure and resulting application properties, software architecture can be divided into two types: microservices and monolithic architecture .

Monolithic approach consists in building the application as a single functional unit with tight coupling of its components. As a rule, it’s perfect for smaller projects, as it enables their straightforward and transparent functioning without extra complexity.

While implementing broad solutions may be too much to handle with a single monolithic codebase, microservices provide the required modularity. Loosely coupled components often have their own databases and function as relatively independent units. This means that you can update or modify any of them without having to worry about the overall app performance.

For even more decoupled microservices and reduced dependencies between them, one can use event-driven architecture . Some popular platforms to implement it are SQS and Kafka .

You can find more details and tips on how to choose one of these architecture types in our article Software Architecture Types: Monolith vs Microservices .

Monolith vs microservices architecture

Depending on the location of computing resources we can define cloud architecture , architecture configured on on-premises servers , and hybrid architecture . While the latter one allows the owner physical access to the hardware, it requires an in-house team of software developers for its support and maintenance. In addition, app scalability depends on the hardware resources available.

Cloud-based architecture does not allow physical access to the servers. However, it eliminates the above-mentioned challenges by offering monitoring and testing automation, unlimited scalability potential, professional support services and more. No wonder why it’s the commonly used solution with a still growing popularity.

See the chart showing annual end-user expenses for public cloud services worldwide over a few past years.

Public cloud services market

Source: Statista.com

Hybrid architecture consists in using both on-premises and cloud resources. Most often it’s used to conform to certain policies and regulations, e.g. when some data must be stored on premises only, or to avoid possible latency when processing data from the cloud, etc.

None of these architecture solutions is a universally best choice for every project. It’s necessary to take into account the software peculiarities to select which approach will be the most suitable match.

What types of cloud architecture are there?

Sometimes it is necessary to have your own data center or a number of local servers. However, cloud architecture suits the majority of solutions, so let’s get familiar with its types.

Public cloud architecture is a rather cost-efficient solution when the computing resources belong to and are managed by a cloud service provider, e.g. AWS or Google. Cloud services are delivered using a multi-tenant approach, and provide customers with the capabilities required for their software projects.

Private cloud architecture is configured on a cloud that belongs to and is managed by the software owner, i.e. is private. For example, it may consist of numerous company's on-premises servers and data centers which do not necessarily have to be located in one place. As a rule, managing a private cloud is more costly than using cloud providers services. However, it allows maximal flexibility, implementing advanced security solutions, and making the most of the cloud resources available.

Multi-cloud architecture combines the computational resources of multiple public clouds and on-premises servers. Such an approach allows avoiding a dependence on a particular cloud service provider, and a possible cost reduction. It also provides flexibility to pick the services most suitable for implementation of different app features or microservices.

Hybrid architecture is often referred to as hybrid cloud architecture . It’s a subtype of multi-cloud architecture and we’ve described it in the previous paragraph.

How do we design solution architecture at Apiko? [Cloud architecture case study]

Every application is built to match some business requirements. Designing the underlying server architecture is like mimicking the app behavior. It highly depends on the app purpose and functionality, security measures, governmental regulations and restrictions, etc. So, the solution architect tightly collaborates with the development team to find out these details.

What are the stages of cloud architecture development?

  • Before we begin building cloud architecture we need to consider
  • business drivers
  • functional + nonfunctional requirements
  • constraints
  • necessity to fit into the existing environment (ecosystem) where the project will be used
  • flexibility.
  • Then we choose a suitable type of app architecture: monolith or microservices. After it, we will be able to pick the computing resources. For example, for microservice architecture, we can choose AWS Lambdas or Elastic Container Service with the serverless approach , or pick the appropriate servers for high computing or data processing apps.
  • Consider what type of cloud services we will use in our application, so that AWS Solution Architect can start configuring appropriate access policies, roles and design networks for the app.
  • Configure the production-ready environment. Collaborate more with application developers to have a better vision of the application logic and how it should perform. Pay attention to what queries need to be cached, and how.
  • If there is no cache, the website can be slow and low performant.
  • If infrastructure caches unnecessary queries or files, it may lead to errors in website usage.
  • Implement initial DoS protection, like AWS WAF , to handle suspicious requests. Without such protection the software can crash and be unable to respond to any request. The worst cases may result in personal data leakage. Some common website attacks include
  • Denial-of-Service (DoS) / Distributed * Denial-of-service (DDoS)
  • Web Defacement Attack
  • SSH Brute Force Attack
  • Cross-site scripting (XSS)
  • Directory Traversal
  • MITM Attack
  • HTTP Response Splitting Attack
  • Test the production-ready environment with load-testing tools, e.g. Gatling , to see how performant the infrastructure is in terms of scalability and efficiency. Load testing can also show us how the application performs during POST or GET requests, and what queries are slowing down the application. After that, we can decide what should be fixed, or configured for the production environment.
  • After the architecture is designed, it is used by the development team to see the key components of the underlying infrastructure.

What does Apiko website architecture look like?

You can see the Apiko website architecture diagram below.

Website architecture diagram

We have picked S3 as a static hosting for our website which saved us from configuring additional servers.

ECS is a container service managed by AWS which provides all the computing power. It’s a cost-effective solution, as it’s easy to scale it up or down whenever needed.

We’ve picked S3 Bucket as an object oriented storage for private or public files.

CloudFront has been chosen for caching.

Is a new solution architecture necessary for every project?

You don’t need to build new solution architecture for relatively minor projects designed to work within an environment similar to an already existing one. Those can be

  • small modules
  • landing pages
  • content updates and minor changes to an existing application, etc.

Let’s sum it up!

It’s a must to design software architecture correctly before the very beginning of your project development. Poor architecture design always affects performance and overall user experience. For example, it can be caused by wrong server CPU or RAM configuration, or caching of the wrong queries, etc.

At Apiko, AWS-certified solution architects collaborate tightly with the development team to set the basis for well-reasoned decision making regarding the solution architecture. Even the perfect underlying infrastructure can’t really perform at its best if the application is not optimized, or is poorly designed (doesn’t use caching, has unoptimized database queries. etc.), and vice versa. Active communication with the software engineers helps us reach a much-needed balance between designing the perfect application architecture and its underlying infrastructure configuration.

We use the best practices and proven technologies to minimize any risks and future-proof software solutions. Do not hesitate to reach out if you need any assistance, have questions, or would like to discuss your ideas with us!

With only one business day to organize a team building activity, a financial group from Conexus Credit Union needed a quick and easy-to-run solution. Find out how they found the perfect activity before their event deadline.

The question – “do you have an activity that we can run…next monday”.

When Conexus Credit Union contacted our team on a Friday afternoon, they were almost certain that there wouldn’t be a solution available for their Monday morning event. Fortunately, many of our solutions are available on even the tightest turnarounds.

The company needed a quick, easy-to-run, and engaging indoor team building activity for a small group of six employees. The ideal activity would get the group’s minds going, promote collaboration between colleagues – and be ready to go the next business day.

THE ANSWER – “Code Break Express”

Code Break  Express was the perfect solution.  An activity filled with brainteasers, puzzles, and riddles, Code Break tested the group’s mental strengths as they worked together to solve as many challenges as possible before time ran out.

The Express version of Code Break was ideal for Conexus Credit Union’s shorter timeframe, as express activities have fewer challenges and can be completed in an hour or less. The company’s group organizer was able to easily and efficiently run the activity through our custom-built smartphone app with great results.

Highlights from the activity include :
