Read only the Best UPSC Books

  • The UPSC syllabus is vast and it takes at least one year to comprehensively cover it. Therefore, you cannot waste precious time by reading books that are below standard or worse, contain incorrect and unauthenticated information. In this case, you would have to unlearn what you had previously read and this can prove difficult.
  • Learning from the recommended sources would mean you can directly make notes out of it, if necessary.
  • There are many books that give information tailor-made for the IAS exam. For instance, Laxmikanth for Polity is a book that you must read if you are taking the UPSC exam . Many questions have been asked that seem to come directly from this book.
  • In addition, many books including the one discussed above, contain information in a ‘notes’ format. So, they are readymade for IAS preparation. You don’t have to waste time trying to make notes.
  • There are many books that are excellently written and contain a whole lot of valuable information. But you have to decide whether they are valuable for the UPSC exam or not. They might make a good read for academics and research scholars. But not necessarily for the UPSC exam. So, you need UPSC books that will help in your preparation and fetch you marks in the IAS exam.

3 ClearIAS strategies for success in the UPSC Civil Services Exam

TTT approach to clear IAS

For best results, we strongly recommend aspirants follow the three methods developed by ClearIAS in their UPSC preparation.

  • ClearIAS Prelims-cum-Main Integrated Approach : By this method, we intend for aspirants to prepare for Mains and Prelims in an integrated manner. Overlapping topics should be combined. Non-overlapping topics (subject only for Mains) should be identified and learned separately. By following this method, aspirants will be ready to face the Main exam much earlier than other aspirants who start solely from the Prelims syllabus.
  • ClearIAS TTT approach :  We advise you to make ‘ T-T-T ‘ ie. ‘Text-books’, ‘Test-series’, and ‘Techniques’ as the core part of your UPSC preparation strategy.
  • ClearIAS Test-based approach : Mock Exams are the fundamental basis of the ClearIAS learning program. Our method of training is such a way that aspirants learn by taking mock exams. ClearIAS Test-series – which integrates learning with test-taking – combines textbooks and techniques to make aspirants exam-ready at the earliest.

Importance of  Text Books for UPSC CSE

You need standard textbooks to learn many subjects mentioned in the UPSC syllabus . Don’t hesitate to invest in good books.

Now, you can buy online the recommended books for UPSC Prelims and Mains .

In the UPSC Civil Services study material list of any serious aspirant, the following categories of materials are recommended.

  • Standard IAS Books for Civil Services Exam – Eg: Laxmikanth for Indian Polity.
  • School and Graduation Text Books – Eg: NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU etc.
  • Newspapers and Magazines – Eg: The Hindu, Yojana, Kurukshetra etc.
  • Online UPSC Study Materials – Eg: ClearIAS.com, Government websites like PIB etc.

Importance of  Test Series for UPSC CSE

As you may know, only when tested in an exam atmosphere with negative marking, you can improve your ability to deliver in the actual exam hall.

Try for free the UPSC Prelims online mock exams by ClearIAS – in the new innovative platform which integrates learning with test-taking. You would be surprised to find out how fast you can learn!

Importance of  Techniques for UPSC CSE

ClearIAS has developed various techniques to clear the IAS exam with ease. Some of them:

  • Memory Techniques
  • Question Paper Solving Techniques

sir i will be appearing for ias after 4 years can i start my prepration now and what rank do i require

ClearIAS Logo 128

March 29, 2013 at 2:42 pm

Rank required depends upon the number of vacancies each year Girish…It also depends on your category. For last few years, around 1000 vacancies are reported for all the 24 Civil Services combined. Around half of the seats come under reservation. To get IAS, a general category candidate needs an All India Rank less than 80. The link ‘Till Which Rank Can An Aspirant Get Into IAS, IPS or IFS?‘ would be a good read.

sir, i am preparing for civils now and i am going to appear the exam next year. i have decided to prepare my own notes through different sources i have, but how to start it? and how to prepare notes?should i frame my own questions ? or is it enough to prepare notes for previous questions ?pls suggest me sir.

May 31, 2013 at 10:01 am

When you prepare notes, prepare it point-wise for each topic and not question-answer mode. See an example for the topic ” Indus Valley Civilization” : https://www.clearias.com/indus-valley-civilization/.

Apart from this, you need to write and practice answers for different questions. Try you own questions as well as previous questions by UPSC. This writing practice will surely turnout highly useful for mains. All the best!

August 1, 2015 at 10:54 am

Hi Niharika, Thanks a lot for the nice comment. Please find how much time is left to you before the exam. If you have more than 6 months, concentrate on mains topics first and then focus on prelims. If you are a beginner, NCERT texts can be a starting source. Daily time table is upto you, but we advise studying all subjects on a daily basis allocating 45-60 min/subject.

I think there is no percentage criteria of graduation to appera UPSC exam.Just you have to become a graduate from a recognized university. So,nothing to worry about graduation’s percentage.Just focused on UPSC preparation. All the very best!

Hi sir, I have already read your blogs, articles, free study material, test series, Those are very nice…… (Like every person can easily get it )

Now i want to revise my old testseries 2017……. It was very useful for me in the further exams too……. So,pls tell me how will i get the test series again in my account?

December 22, 2017 at 8:51 am

Appreciate your interest in ClearIAS Test Series, and thank you for writing to us.

Irrespective of the date of joining, subscription to ClearIAS Prelims Test Series 2017, has ended for all subscribers on the date of Preliminary Exam, ie 18-06-2017.

Now, as the platform is loaded with ClearIAS Prelims Test Series 2018, all previous test details are deleted.

To ensure quality and stay up-to-date with the latest requirements of UPSC, we provide a new/revised test series every year, once the Prelims is over for next year Prelims. There is nothing unusual in this process and this is how all major test series providers who provide access to students based on a season-based model work.

If you are looking for Prelims 2018, you can now join ClearIAS Prelims Test Series 2018 at a discounted rate. We will be adding lot many additional tests this year (including NCERTs and CSAT). This would give you a massive early advantage and almost 9 months until next year Prelims for the complete coverage of our most probable questions. User account details (username/password etc) of all users will remain the same for Prelims 2018 as well.

December 27, 2017 at 10:18 pm

Sure… I will join in 2018 test series..

Thank you so much for your response….
