homework management system calendar vs assignment notebook

Homework management system: Calendar vs. assignment notebook

Katie November 15, 2021 executive function , homework , organization , productivity

homework management system

By Katie Azevedo, M.Ed.

I’m frequently asked about the difference between a calendar and an assignment notebook. They are not the same. At all. While both are essential pieces of a student homework-management system, they each have a unique function. The bottom line: Neither a calendar nor a basic assignment notebook is sufficient alone, and they should instead be used together.

All student planners (assignment notebooks) come with a weekly spread. A weekly spread could be on one page of the planner or it could span two pages.

Some student planners come with a monthly calendar. Usually, a monthly calendar spans two pages, with or without monthly tabs for easy flipping. A calendar by itself, without a weekly spread, is not a sufficient homework management system.

When choosing an assignment notebook ( here’s how to pick one ), pick one with both a monthly calendar and a weekly spread. ( Here’s a good, basic assignment notebook suggestion , or this one too .) Why? An ultimate homework management system requires that students keep track of two different types of information:

  • Time-sensitive information
  • Tasks and assignments

If you’d prefer a single, one-page homework tracker, try this daily homework tracker here or this weekly homework planner here . I have made them with love, of course.

What about digital calendars?

Digital calendars are excellent, as long as you use them consistently. If you only use your digital calendar sporadically, you won’t trust it, and if you don’t trust it, it won’t work. If you want to use a simple assignment notebook with just a weekly spread, and then use a digital calendar for the calendar component, go ahead.

Here is my complete step-by-step tutorial on how to use Google Calendar for school .

calendar vs assignment notebook

What goes on a calendar?

The calendar section of an assignment notebook is for time-sensitive information, excluding daily homework assignments. This includes the following items:

  • Project deadlines
  • Tests and quizzes
  • After school meetings
  • Field trips and special events
  • Early releases and early dismissals
  • Practices and games
  • Appointments
  • Reminders to bring something to school on a particular day

Again, the calendar section is not where you write your daily homework assignments.

What goes in an assignment notebook?

The weekly spread of an assignment notebook is for nothing other than homework assignments. This is where you simply list out the homework you have to do for each class. Don’t forget that studying for tests is an implied assignment. Teachers won’t always tell you to study before a test, because that’s the expectation – so write down your study sessions as if they are homework assignments.

In each daily space, list your assignments by class, like below:

  • Math: worksheet; page 167 in textbook #4-28
  • English: read chapters 4 and 5 in To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Science: Edpuzzle
  • History: write 3rd body paragraph for essay; find another primary source
  • Spanish: Study imperfect vs preterite endings for Friday’s quiz

Write down all assignments on the day they’re assigned, not on the day they’re due. For example, if you are assigned a math worksheet on Monday that’s not due until Thursday, write math worksheet in Monday’s space, not Thursday’s space. If you don’t get to it Monday, rewrite it in Tuesday’s space on Tuesday. This post here explains exactly how to use 3 specific symbols in your assignment notebook for this exact purpose.

Once you write down all your assignments, get to work and do them. Don’t know what to do first? Here’s a simple 4-step method for prioritizing homework .

Final notes on the perfect homework management system

The calendar vs. assignment notebook debate isn’t that complicated, but it certainly comes up a lot with my students and their parents. The truth is that you really need both in order to have a fully functioning homework management system. Whether you use a digital calendar or an analog calendar doesn’t matter too much, but I hold tight to my suggestion of using an analog assignment notebook. Whatever you do, you can not rely on your memory for keeping track of homework and due dates; that’s not a thing, it’s silly, and you are way smarter than that.

How I’m Using Spiral Notebooks to Simplify Homeschooling

January 5, 2015

By Sarah Mackenzie

Back to the homeschooling grindstone already?  Ay yi yi! Doesn’t it feel too soon? I’m not feeling quite as fly-by-the-seat as I often do after a break, though, because I’ve got a new system for keeping track of school assignments, and it’s rocking my world.

I love finding ways to simplify homeschooling, and this method really takes the cake.

I’ll tell you all about it, and then you have every right to say, “Of course, Sarah. Why haven’t you done this all along?” like I said to myself when my friend first showed me how it’s done.

Here’s what happened

Early in December, I was at church, trying to keep my mind focused- it kept drifting off to schoolwork.

In my head, I was finagling how we could possibly combine subjects or weed something out and do less in order to make the school day work.

The days were difficult.

Even though I had pared back and simplified as much as possible , we were still struggling to hit those most important subjects.

Twin toddlers change everything! Add a 2-year-old to the mix and things can get downright disastrous by 10 am, let me tell you. Our school day was feeling it.

After church, I moseyed out to the foyer and gave my friend Sheila a big hug. “How’s it going?” she asked with a smile. Sheila homeschooled her three kids into adulthood and they are just some of the most fantastic kids you’ll ever meet.

She’s not so far removed that she forgets just how hard it was, but she’s got this end-of-the-homeschooling-road wisdom and insight that I just crave to learn from. I absolutely adore her.

big assignment notebook

She asked that simple question, and I started to fall apart. I can’t do this! There’s too much to get to! Maybe what I’m trying to do here IS actually impossible?

Sheila listened (like she always does), and then she said, “Well, how much of their schoolwork are they doing on their own?” I stopped to think.

She followed up, “And how are you giving them assignments?”

Right. That.

I write them on a white board each morning when I finally get around to it-which is usually in between grabbing a twin off the dining room table and the other one out of the kitchen garbage and washing Posy’s jelly face and changing a diaper and scolding someone for forgetting to shut the door to the basement where a toddler nearly plummeted to his demise.

IMG_0133

It’s not a good system.

Sheila came over the next day. She told me I would need a simple 10 cent spiral notebook for each kid, and she would show me what to do.

And she did.

Here’s the groundbreaking system. Are your ready for this?:

Each evening, I write the kids’ assignments down for the next day in their own assignment book.

What? You thought I was going to say something grand and amazing, and you’re a little let down?

I know. I was skeptical at first, too, but I have been floored at the change this simple method has made in our homeschool.

You aren’t alone if you feel like this method sounds too good to be true. But a couple years after sharing this article for the first time, I re-shared it, and this is just a little peek at the responses to it:

big assignment notebook

See, after I employed this notebook system, we began to consistently get to pretty much everything I assigned for each day by early in the afternoon .

For the first time, I wasn’t having to rack my brain to remember what we were supposed to do when.

IMG_0129

Each morning after breakfast, the big kids do their one morning chore, dress and brush their teeth, and then they set to work on their school notebooks.

Instead of feeling pulled between teaching a lesson, caring for toddlers, and setting on soup for dinner, I go about my business with the little ones and the kids go about theirs.

When they have a question or need help with an assignment, they bring their materials to me wherever I am, and I help them on the spot.

If someone else is getting help at the moment, they work on something else in their notebook until I’m free.

IMG_0128

I know what you’re thinking (I was thinking the same thing). Something like this, right?:

“I don’t have time to write down assignments each night.”

The truth is, it takes 10-15 minutes. I spent a little time making a master spreadsheet of assignments and how frequently I want each thing tackled, and I use that as a quick reference. It literally takes me ten minutes (max) to look at the spreadsheet and write down the assignments for all three of my school-agers.

If I really can’t carve out ten minutes to do this, I skip sweeping the floor, folding the laundry, or checking Facebook, and I do this instead. It’s worth it.

“Why should I write it out when I could just print out a checklist?”

Because something about the act of writing it out by hand triggers the brain to engage. When I’m writing my 13-year-old’s assignments out, I can tell that I’m giving her too much work when it’s taking me a while to write or the paper is filling up.

It’s so easy to just pop in one more assignment on a spreadsheet on your computer. It’s harder to make the space when you’re writing it out by hand.

Also, writing it out means I’m constantly in touch with where each child is in each of his or her subjects. Instead of just giving an assignment that says “do the next math assignment,” it says “do lesson 14.”

IMG_0113-1-2

See that box before the math assignment? That’s what this child checks off when she’s done. The box after the assignment means that I need to check it off for her to really be “done” for the day.

If she made a lot of errors, the next day’s assignment will likely be “Watch lesson 14 one more time and make corrections to yesterday’s assignment.”

Writing each assignment out by hand means that I’m staying connected with where she is in every subject.

I can tell if a Latin assignment is taking her longer than usual, or if she’s flying through it in her sleep. In fact, I can more easily keep my finger on the pulse of where each of my kids are in their different subjects.

Some tips that help to make this work:

  • Resist the urge to make this more complicated than it needs to be. I use colored pens, but it’s just for fun- not for color coding. You want to remove as many barriers as possible to making this tool do the thing it’s supposed to do. Simple is always better.
  • Keep them handy. These spiral notebooks go in a basket on our kitchen counter. The kids take them out, use them, and put them back. They don’t disappear into the school bins or backpacks or any such nonsense. They need to be handy, visible, and always in the same place.
  • Use the last 10 pages or so for a booklist. Have you been meaning to print out a booklist form for your kids to record their personal reading on this year? Me too. Why I can’t ever manage to keep enough of those around (or keep track of them when I do) is beyond me, but it’s always the case.

I put a post it flag marking the last ten pages or so of the spiral notebook, and the kids have been instructed to write the book title, author, and # pages of each book they read on their own. At the end of the year, I’ll make transcribing this onto the computer a keyboarding assignment for one of my young typists.

Give it a try!

(Want to see these spiral notebooks in action? I did Here’s a video where I show what they look like in our homeschool .)

So if you’re feeling a bit over-your-head as you hit the books once again, grab a spiral notebook and see if this super-simple system might see you through the dark winter months.

It has been transformative for us- really helping me to teach from rest and restoring my peace in our schooling. The kids love it, too, and have thanked me multiple times for organizing their school day this way.

P.S. Using spiral notebooks was a game-changer for us in simplifying our homeschool. Here are my best tips on how to simplify the homeschool curriculum and how to simplify the homeschool schedule .

Assignment Notebook Example

  • Write the test or assignment in your planner the day it is assigned.
  • Make sure you write neatly so you can read it, and write enough so you know exactly what to do.
  • Write the test or assignment in your planner the day it is due.
  • If you were invited to a party, you wouldn’t write the date on your calendar the date you were invited, you would put it on the date of the party. In an assignment notebook, you do both. You enter the assignment when it was given (when you were invited), and you also enter it on the date it is due (the date of the party).
  • The physical act of writing the assignment down again will serve as a reminder that you’ve got work to do. Break down long-term tests, projects and assignments into smaller steps so you are doing a specific task each time you have class that moves you closer towards completing your project. Don’t just re-enter the name of the project, test, or assignment; instead, write down the name and what you’re planning to do. Make a schedule for long-term assignments. Do a fraction of the long-term assignment every day.
  • Write “No Homework” or “Nothing” or the null set sign if you don’t have any assignments in a certain class.
  • Maintenance homework includes studying your flashcards from World Language, studying your notes, practicing your instrument, independent reading, etc.
  • Make the planner a part of your daily routine. Carry it with you at all times and remember to check it every morning and every night.
  • Fill in your assignment and test due dates as soon as you learn them. Get in the habit of writing in your planner while you're still in the classroom. Don't put it off!
  • Show your parent your assignment notebook and your completed tasks/assignments to make sure what you did matches what you wrote in your assignment notebook.
  • Ask a friend whose academic success you respect (a study buddy) to make sure what’s in your assignment notebook matches what you’ve been assigned.
  • Check Schoology.
  • Make sure your name is on the front cover of your planner REALLY BIG. If you forget it somewhere, we’ll know it’s yours.
  • After you’ve completed the assignment or the task, check it off so you feel that sense of satisfaction.
  • Write down the name and phone number of a study buddy in your assignment notebook.
  • Make a weekly to-do list.
  • Before you begin an assignment, write down how much time you predict it will take next to your entry in your planner. When you’re done, write down how much time you actually needed.
  • Circle what you need to do that night.
  • Devise a color-coding system that works for you.
  • Write your assignments in your subject notebook, etc. so you’ve written it down twice.
  • Start your assignment the night it’s assigned (if you can) to make sure you get it. If you don’t understand something, you can ask the teacher the next day before it’s the day of your class.
  • If the assignment is repeated throughout the week, draw an arrow down to the appropriate day or write, for example, “See Monday.”
  • Do the longest and hardest homework first. Do the easiest first. Do what you want to do first. Reach into your bag and do something random. Do the most urgent thing first. Do what you remember first without looking in your assignment notebook. Do the projects first – especially if they’re due the next day. All of these strategies work for different kids. Do what works for you, and follow the same routine.
  • Use the weekends for long-term assignments, but try to make sure you have one day a week of no homework.

Anthony rizzo takes big injury step with yankees rehab assignment.

Anthony Rizzo took a significant step back toward the Yankees on Friday night, potentially putting him in line to return by the first week of September.

Two-plus months after suffering a fracture in his right forearm , the veteran first baseman began a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset in Portland, Maine, going 0-for-1 with a pair of walks and a run scored.

Rizzo is expected to just DH for at least his first four rehab games — the plan is Friday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday — before potentially getting action in the field next weekend.

Manager Aaron Boone said Friday he did not think Rizzo “would need that much time playing the field,” leaving the door open for him to rejoin the Yankees at some point during their road trip through Texas and Chicago in the first week of September.

Anthony Rizzo during his rehab game at Somerset.

“Excited [about] the way he looks and feels,” Boone said before Friday’s 3-0 win over the Rockies at Yankee Stadium. “Just seeing him in the live [batting practice] last week, thought he looked really good. He feels really good, so I think he’s really encouraged.”

Rizzo was not lighting the world on fire at the plate before getting hurt June 16 at Fenway Park — batting .223 with a .630 OPS in 70 games — but his experienced left-handed bat could help down the stretch.

The Yankees got an immediate boost from Ben Rice after he was called up to replace Rizzo, but the rookie has cooled off over the last month while DJ LeMahieu has also continued to struggle .

Since Rizzo went down, Yankees first basemen have combined for an OPS of .574, which was the second-lowest mark in the majors during that span.

Anthony Rizzo could be back in the Yankees lineup in early September after suffering a fracture in his right forearm.

Clarke Schmidt (lat strain) also began a rehab assignment Friday night with Somerset, throwing 3 ²/₃ innings on 48 pitches while striking out six, walking one and giving up a solo home run for the only hit he allowed.

“Really happy to feel healthy and stuff was really good tonight, so definitely a big step,” Schmidt told reporters, adding that he expects to make his next start Wednesday.

The right-hander has been out since May 27, but is hoping to rejoin the Yankees rotation in September after posting a 2.52 ERA in 11 starts before getting hurt.

Clarke Schmidt on the mound for Double-A Somerset.

The rotation is shorthanded after Luis Gil landed on the IL on Wednesday with a lower back sprain, but the right-hander played catch Friday.

Will Warren, called up as Gil’s injury replacement, will start Saturday’s game against the Rockies, giving Marcus Stroman an extra day of rest before he starts Sunday.

Jon Berti (calf strain) was supposed to join Schmidt and Rizzo in beginning his rehab assignment Friday with Somerset, but his flight to Portland on Thursday night was canceled and he then had issues with his bags making it there Friday.

So instead, the infielder was set to work out there Friday and then start his rehab assignment Saturday.

BREAKING: Los Angeles Dodgers Star Set For Rehab Assignment Next Week

Brady farkas | 6 hours ago.

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto (18) throws in the first inning against the Kansas City Royals at Dodger Stadium on June 15.

  • Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers, hoping to win their second World Series since 2020, picked up great news on Friday with regards to injured pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Per Kyle Glaser on social media:

Yoshinobu Yamamoto will throw a bullpen on Monday and go out to a rehab appearance on Wednesday. Affiliate is still TBD. He’ll throw two innings.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto will throw a bullpen on Monday and go out to a rehab appearance on Wednesday. Affiliate is still TBD. He’ll throw two innings. — Kyle Glaser (@KyleAGlaser) August 23, 2024

As the Dodgers attempt to close out the National League West, having Yamamoto back would be a big step for their tattered rotation. The Dodgers are currently missing Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, Tyler Glasnow, Emmet Sheehan, and River Ryan from the stable of arms, in additon to him.

Yamamoto hasn't pitched since June 15, but he's been very effective when he has been on the mound. In his first season since coming over from Japan, he's gone 6-2 thus far with a 2.92 ERA. He's struck out 84 batters in 74.0 innings.

Yamamoto signed the biggest contract ever for a pitcher this past offseason when he inked a 12-year deal worth $325 million. He's just 26 years old, having celebrated his birthday.

The Dodgers enter play on Friday at 4.0 games up in the National League West. They'll take on the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday in a rematch of that 2020 World Series.

First pitch from Dodger Stadium is set for 10:10 p.m. ET. The Rays have played better of late, climbing over .500 at 64-63. The Dodgers enter play at 76-52. They are coming off a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners.

Phillies notebook: coaching twist has helped straighten out cristopher sanchez.

Phillies' Cristopher Sánchez throws during the second inning against the Nationals Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park. (Derik Hamilton - The Associated Press)

First of all, the Phillies’ recently struggling starter dominated the Washington Nationals from start to finish in a 5-1, complete game victory.

Then afterward, Sanchez successfully gave a lot of love to usually under-the-radar pitching coaches.

“As you can see, I haven’t had the greatest results after the All-Star break, so my goal today was to compete and do the best that I could,” said Sanchez (9-8), who lost four of five decisions in July, but has now won two of three in August.

A big reason for that: he was told by the coaching staff that his arm slot on his release had gone lower than normal. A bullpen session or two to correct that, and voila…

“Thank you to the pitching coaches (Caleb Cotham, Brian Kaplan) who saw that early, and told me, ‘You’re lowering your arm a little bit, let’s work on getting it back to where it needs to be,'” Sanchez said. “Thanks to that, we had the results that we did today.”

Manager Rob Thomson was glad to see it.

“Sanchie was fantastic, he really was,” Thomson said of his pitcher, who allowed only one earned run and two hits while striking out four and walking none. “Everything about his night, his command, his changeup, the sink on his fastball were unbelievable. Of the 27 outs, 19 were either on the ground or strikeouts. It was dominant.”

• • •

Ranger Suarez held his own Saturday amid the toughest pitching challenge he’s had over the past three weeks. That was certainly good news as couched by Thomson, but what seems certain is going with the manager’s September plan for his starting rotation is an even tougher challenge than Suarez’s comeback bid from back issues.

Suarez has been sidelined since late July due to what was only called lower back soreness. But he threw both in the bullpen (20 pitches) and in a simulated game (57 more) Saturday, giving up a home run to fellow injuree Austin Hays, but faring well physically.

Thomson said Suarez was steady with his velocity at about 91 mph, but also popped fastballs at 93, noting, “it got better as the (simulated) game went on.” The optimistic plan would be for Suarez to return during a three-game series in Kansas City which begins Friday night.

The Phillies certainly could use a healthy Suarez back in the rotation, as Tyler Phillips, who looked so good in pitching a four-hit complete game shutout over the Cleveland Guardians on July 27, had an August from hell end early on Saturday

Phillips’ current numbers of 4-1 with a 5.50 ERA are deceptive. For over his three August starts, Phillips allowed 17 earned runs over a combined 11 innings, or a 13.90 ERA. That sudden slide has earned him a ride back up the Turnpike to Lehigh Valley.

All of which makes Thomson’s preferred plan for a six-man starting rotation down the season stretch seem rather … optimistic.

“It’s still in the back of my mind,” Thomson said. “Absolutely, because of the fatigue. That’s one of the things with Tyler Phillips. I think his stuff was just trending down a little bit, due to fatigue. It was nothing he was doing wrong.”

But Phillips’ sudden slowdown is only part of the problem. There is no one here now that would theoretically take his “sixth” spot in the rotation, and moreover, that was Taijuan Walker just returning from the injured list earlier this week to get back into the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

“It gives guys an extra day,” Thomson said. “We did it once or twice last year, and it seemed to help the guys.”

With Phillips sent down, the Phillies called up IronPigs reliever Tyler Gilbert. He has quite a history. He was an unlikely sixth round Phillies draft pick in 2015, pitched as a starter through various A-ball levels, and in 2018 was promoted to Double-A Reading, where they made him a reliever.

He made it to the IronPigs later that season and pitched there in 2019, but was traded to the Dodgers just prior to the 2020 pandemic shutdown. He went to Arizona via the Rule 5 draft the following December, and on Aug. 3, 2021 made his major league debut as a Diamondbacks reliever.

Eleven days later, Gilbert made his first major league start … and promptly threw a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the San Diego Padres.

Gilbert finished that season, but in 2022 was 0–3 with a 5.24 ERA in eight appearances when he was pulled with an elbow injury on Aug. 3. His season was over and he was subsequently designated for assignment. He would split time in 2023 between Arizona and Triple-A Reno to limited success. Then for 2024, he signed a minor league deal with the Reds, and in seven games with Triple A Louisville looked like Phillips has had the last few games, pitching to a 13.11 ERA over just 11.2 innings.

The Phillies got him on May 7 in a cash deal. They assigned him to the IronPigs as a reliever, and he promptly got his career back on track. In 27 appearances he’s compiled a 4-0 record with a 2.06 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, with 48 strikeouts over 35 innings.

WooSox Notebook: Casas called back up to Boston, Mayer closes in on Triple-A debut

WORCESTER — Physically, Triston Casas may not be feeling 100 percent just yet.

But still, the 24-year-old first baseman rejoined the Boston Red Sox for their game in Baltimore Friday.

“The pain is what it is, it’s not going to bother me from playing the game that I need to, and that’s what I wanted most,” Casas told the media from the visiting dugout at Camden Yards . “That’s when I knew I was ready to come back was when I knew it wasn’t going to be a factor as to whether my result was based off the amount of discomfort.

“It’s tolerable, it’s manageable, but it’s not going to be a reason why I don’t play well.”

During his rehab assignment with the Worcester Red Sox , Casas hit .300 with a homer, seven doubles and seven RBIs in 11 games and 40 at-bats. Amid a recent road trip in Syracuse, Casas told the T&G that he was “feeling good enough” to play as he attempted to return to Boston from a left rib strain.

“I’m (going to) give it my all until the wheels fall off,” Casas said on Aug. 6.

With Boston’s playoff chances taking a hit this past week, the Red Sox reinstated Casas from the 60-day injured list prior to their second contest of a four-game series against the Orioles. With Casas’ rehab stint set to expire Sunday anyway, the Red Sox were anxious to get their slugging first baseman back — and WooSox manager Chad Tracy thinks Casas felt the same way.

“I think he’s anxious to get back,” Tracy said Friday before Worcester’s 3-0 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs . “We’re in the stretch run of (the season and there’s) still a good bit of time left in the big leagues, and every night matters. So I think from my perspective, just watching him ... he checked all the boxes.”

“It’s good enough to come out and play,” Casas said before playing first base and hitting third for the Red Sox.  He went 1 for 5 with a run in Boston's 12-10 victory.

Mayer remains on mend

Another player recently on the mend within the Red Sox organization is Marcelo Mayer.

Despite being promoted to Triple-A Worcester earlier this week, Mayer has been sidelined with lower back inflammation. But on Wednesday, the 21-year-old shortstop took a step in the right direction when he participated in batting practice.

A day later, Mayer fielded grounders before running the bases on Friday. The top Red Sox prospect could be in line to make his Triple-A debut on Saturday — or Sunday — if his body responds well to his most recent physical activity.

“I’ll double back with the trainers and see if we have a thumbs up to get him in there at DH (Saturday) or not, or does he need another day?” Tracy said. “But we’re certainly getting closer. No hiccups to this point.”

Mark another item of the Marcelo Mayer checklist: Running the bases. The WooSox infielder hit BP Wednesday, fielded grounders yesterday and now ran the bases. WooSox manager Chad Tracy said if he continues these activities that Mayer could make his Triple-A debut this weekend. pic.twitter.com/vDGcKRWQtH — Tommy Cassell (@tommycassell44) August 16, 2024

Impressive performance from Priester

After a shaky first outing with Worcester, Quinn Priester has since settled down with his new club.

With the Red Sox acquiring the right-handed pitcher from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for infield/outfield prospect Nick Yorke, Priester pitched for a third time for the WooSox on Friday.

The 23-year-old was impressive — tossing five innings of two-hit ball, striking out one and throwing 29 of his 42 pitches for strikes. Before the game, Tracy said he wanted Priester to recapture some of the velocity that made him an intriguing pitching prospect within the Pittsburgh organization.

“When he was first drafted by the Pirates, and was going through the system those initial years, there was high velo, which I think made him attractive,” Tracy said. “We know that's in there.”

Priester found that velocity Friday as he topped out at 97 mph in Worcester’s win. He averaged 94.7 mph across 19 offerings of his most popular pitch — his sinker. Despite not factoring in the decision, Priester was pleased with his most recent performance.

WooSox starting pitcher Quinn Priester talks about his impressive performance Friday, when the 23-year-old right-hander tossed five innings, allowing two hits, no runs and striking out one. It was Priester’s best outing since being acquired by Boston in a trade for Nick Yorke. pic.twitter.com/LPO49XwsY5 — Tommy Cassell (@tommycassell44) August 17, 2024

“We improved, and now, let’s get another good one under our belt, and that was tonight,” Priester said postgame. “And tonight is one that you don’t kind of look back on and say, ‘Hey, let’s make this one better’ because there’s not really much else to do. It’s, ‘Hey, how can we do that every single time we go out and how can that be the floor for us? How can that be what we go out and do every single time?’

“And that’s what we’re going to work on every single day, and that’s what we’re here to do.”

After a Big Week for Democrats, One Good Day for Trump

Former President Donald J. Trump talked policy in Las Vegas and seemed almost chipper. In Arizona, he reveled in the endorsement of a former campaign rival, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Donald Trump stands onstage inside a large rally full of people.

By Shawn McCreesh

It was a moment the political world had been wondering about for weeks.

If Vice President Kamala Harris had a good convention, would it knock former President Donald J. Trump further off his game?

Would all that positive press for Ms. Harris — the big ratings, celebrity froth and the double-barreled Obama zingers — drive Mr. Trump deeper into his most self-destructive patterns?

At a Mexitalian restaurant in Las Vegas on Friday afternoon, we seemed to have our answer: It would not — at least for now.

Mr. Trump had turned up at the restaurant to stand among service industry workers and promote his “no tax on tips” policy proposal. He stayed mostly focused — he did not talk all about himself but rather about the plight of waiters and bartenders. He told them it was Ms. Harris who cast a tiebreaking vote to provide the Internal Revenue Service with funds to hire 87,000 people — the very people who would be snatching their hard-earned tips. (The truth is a bit more nuanced than all that.)

He did not devolve into any racist tangents about Ms. Harris, or call anyone a fat pig, or pick a fight with a popular governor from his own party, or tell dark tales about young women being raped, strangled and murdered by immigrants.

He seemed almost chipper (at least more chipper than the night before, when he called into Fox News with his initial meandering reviews of Ms. Harris’s big speech). He talked about how the restaurant’s owner had started as a dishwasher and worked his way up, and joked with him about how he must have lots of cash now. The owner compared Mr. Trump to Ronald Reagan. “Thank you, Javier,” said Mr. Trump, looking touched.
