How to Decipher the Paper Assignment

Many instructors write their assignment prompts differently. By following a few steps, you can better understand the requirements for the assignment. The best way, as always, is to ask the instructor about anything confusing.

  • Read the prompt the entire way through once. This gives you an overall view of what is going on.
  • Underline or circle the portions that you absolutely must know. This information may include due date, research (source) requirements, page length, and format (MLA, APA, CMS).
  • Underline or circle important phrases. You should know your instructor at least a little by now - what phrases do they use in class? Does he repeatedly say a specific word? If these are in the prompt, you know the instructor wants you to use them in the assignment.
  • Think about how you will address the prompt. The prompt contains clues on how to write the assignment. Your instructor will often describe the ideas they want discussed either in questions, in bullet points, or in the text of the prompt. Think about each of these sentences and number them so that you can write a paragraph or section of your essay on that portion if necessary.
  • Rank ideas in descending order, from most important to least important. Instructors may include more questions or talking points than you can cover in your assignment, so rank them in the order you think is more important. One area of the prompt may be more interesting to you than another.
  • Ask your instructor questions if you have any.

After you are finished with these steps, ask yourself the following:

  • What is the purpose of this assignment? Is my purpose to provide information without forming an argument, to construct an argument based on research, or analyze a poem and discuss its imagery?
  • Who is my audience? Is my instructor my only audience? Who else might read this? Will it be posted online? What are my readers' needs and expectations?
  • What resources do I need to begin work? Do I need to conduct literature (hermeneutic or historical) research, or do I need to review important literature on the topic and then conduct empirical research, such as a survey or an observation? How many sources are required?
  • Who - beyond my instructor - can I contact to help me if I have questions? Do you have a writing lab or student service center that offers tutorials in writing?

Poster or Song Analysis: Poster or Song? Poster!

Goals : To systematically consider the rhetorical choices made in either a poster or a song. She says that all the time.

Things to Consider: ah- talking points

  • how the poster addresses its audience and is affected by context I'll do this first - 1.
  • general layout, use of color, contours of light and shade, etc.
  • use of contrast, alignment, repetition, and proximity C.A.R.P. They say that, too. I'll do this third - 3.
  • the point of view the viewer is invited to take, poses of figures in the poster, etc. any text that may be present
  • possible cultural ramifications or social issues that have bearing I'll cover this second - 2.
  • ethical implications
  • how the poster affects us emotionally, or what mood it evokes
  • the poster's implicit argument and its effectiveness said that was important in class, so I'll discuss this last - 4.
  • how the song addresses its audience
  • lyrics: how they rhyme, repeat, what they say
  • use of music, tempo, different instruments
  • possible cultural ramifications or social issues that have bearing
  • emotional effects
  • the implicit argument and its effectiveness

These thinking points are not a step-by-step guideline on how to write your paper; instead, they are various means through which you can approach the subject. I do expect to see at least a few of them addressed, and there are other aspects that may be pertinent to your choice that have not been included in these lists. You will want to find a central idea and base your argument around that. Additionally, you must include a copy of the poster or song that you are working with. Really important!

I will be your audience. This is a formal paper, and you should use academic conventions throughout.

Length: 4 pages Format: Typed, double-spaced, 10-12 point Times New Roman, 1 inch margins I need to remember the format stuff. I messed this up last time =(

Academic Argument Essay

5-7 pages, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, 1 inch margins.

Minimum of five cited sources: 3 must be from academic journals or books

  • Design Plan due: Thurs. 10/19
  • Rough Draft due: Monday 10/30
  • Final Draft due: Thurs. 11/9

The design plan is simply a statement of purpose, as described on pages 40-41 of the book, and an outline. The outline may be formal, as we discussed in class, or a printout of an Open Mind project. It must be a minimum of 1 page typed information, plus 1 page outline.

This project is an expansion of your opinion editorial. While you should avoid repeating any of your exact phrases from Project 2, you may reuse some of the same ideas. Your topic should be similar. You must use research to support your position, and you must also demonstrate a fairly thorough knowledge of any opposing position(s). 2 things to do - my position and the opposite.

Your essay should begin with an introduction that encapsulates your topic and indicates 1 the general trajectory of your argument. You need to have a discernable thesis that appears early in your paper. Your conclusion should restate the thesis in different words, 2 and then draw some additional meaningful analysis out of the developments of your argument. Think of this as a "so what" factor. What are some implications for the future, relating to your topic? What does all this (what you have argued) mean for society, or for the section of it to which your argument pertains? A good conclusion moves outside the topic in the paper and deals with a larger issue.

You should spend at least one paragraph acknowledging and describing the opposing position in a manner that is respectful and honestly representative of the opposition’s 3 views. The counterargument does not need to occur in a certain area, but generally begins or ends your argument. Asserting and attempting to prove each aspect of your argument’s structure should comprise the majority of your paper. Ask yourself what your argument assumes and what must be proven in order to validate your claims. Then go step-by-step, paragraph-by-paragraph, addressing each facet of your position. Most important part!

Finally, pay attention to readability . Just because this is a research paper does not mean that it has to be boring. Use examples and allow your opinion to show through word choice and tone. Proofread before you turn in the paper. Your audience is generally the academic community and specifically me, as a representative of that community. Ok, They want this to be easy to read, to contain examples I find, and they want it to be grammatically correct. Structure and aim : This assignment will elaborate and discuss the specific pattern of obesity epidemic development, as well as its epidemiology. Debt, trade and globalization will also be analyzed as factors that led to escalation of the problem. Moreover, the assignment will discuss the governmental interventions that make efforts to address this issue.

Practical tips on assignment writing

Here are some practical tips that will keep your work focused and effective:

–         Critical thinking – Academic writing has to be characterized by critical thinking, not only to provide the work with the needed level, but also because it takes part in the final mark.

–         Continuity of ideas – When you get to the middle of assignment, things can get confusing. You have to make sure that the ideas are flowing continuously within and between paragraphs, so the reader will be enabled to follow the argument easily. Dividing the work in different paragraphs is very important for this purpose.

–         Usage of ‘you’ and ‘I’ – According to the academic writing standards, the assignments should be written in an impersonal language, which means that the usage of ‘you’ and ‘I’ should be avoided. The only acceptable way of building your arguments is by using opinions and evidence from authoritative sources.

–         Referencing – this part of the assignment is extremely important and it takes a big part in the final mark. Make sure to use either Vancouver or Harvard referencing systems, and use the same system in the bibliography and while citing work of other sources within the text.  

–         Usage of examples – A clear understanding on your assignment’s topic should be provided by comparing different sources and identifying their strengths and weaknesses in an objective manner. This is the part where you should show how the knowledge can be applied into practice.

–         Numbering and bullets – Instead of using numbering and bullets, the academic writing style prefers the usage of paragraphs.

–         Including figures and tables – The figures and tables are an effective way of conveying information to the reader in a clear manner, without disturbing the word count. Each figure and table should have clear headings and you should make sure to mention their sources in the bibliography.

–         Word count – the word count of your assignment mustn’t be far above or far below the required word count. The outline will provide you with help in this aspect, so make sure to plan the work in order to keep it within the boundaries.

The importance of an effective conclusion

The conclusion of your assignment is your ultimate chance to provide powerful arguments that will impress the reader. The conclusion in academic writing is usually expressed through three main parts:

–         Stating the context and aim of the assignment

–         Summarizing the main points briefly

–         Providing final comments with consideration of the future (discussing clear examples of things that can be done in order to improve the situation concerning your topic of discussion).

Getting started on an assignment or homework can often times be the hardest step. Putting off the assignment can make the problem worse, reducing the time you have to complete the task and increasing stress. By learning how to get started and overcome the urge to procrastinate, you can get your assignments done on schedule and with less stress, opening up more free time.

Restructuring Your Assignment

  • For example, you might research areas of a report that you find most interesting before moving on to other areas.
  • If your math assignment has different types of questions, try doing those that you enjoy the most before moving on to the others.
  • You might also try tackling smaller or easier tasks first so you can cross a few items off your list. Seeing that you've already made progress may help you feel motivated to continue.

Step 2 Start working for five minutes.

  • Promise yourself that you will meet your goal of working for five minutes on the assignment.

As a graduate student, you will be assigned a variety of types of writing projects.  A good rule of thumb in approaching any writing project is to ask yourself: for whom am I writing and why?  Or, who is my audience and what do they expect from my writing?  Your assignments will almost invariably require you to make one or more arguments.   A good argument is well-written, logical, and supported by evidence.

Expository writing involves understanding, explaining, analyzing, and/or evaluating a topic.  It includes your standard graduate school essay, book review, or research paper where your instructor requires you to analyze and/or study a topic.  In general, your audience for such assignments will be your course instructor. You can think of such writing assignments as your instructor asking you to make an argument.  Your instructor wants to gauge your creative thinking skills and how well you understand the course material by seeing how well you can make an argument related to that material.  Remember: a good argument is well-written, logical, and supported by evidence.

An expository paper is therefore not about you (at least not directly); it is about the facts you have learned and researched and the argument you have built from those facts. Therefore, unless you are quoting someone, you should avoid using first person pronouns (the words I, me, my, we, us, our ) in your writing.  Let your facts and arguments speak for themselves instead of beginning statements with "I think" or "I believe."

A compare & contrast assignment is a type of expository & research paper assignment.  It is important to organize your writing around the themes you are comparing & contrasting.  If, for example, you are assigned to compare & contrast, say, Augustine's Confessions and The Autobiography of Malcolm X , a common mistake students make is to write the first part of their essay strictly about Augustine's Confessions , and the second part of the essay strictly about The Autobiography of Malcolm X .  In a good compare & contrast essay, you instead explore an issue in every paragraph or two, and show how, in this case, both Augustine & Malcolm X share common ground or differ on that issue.  Then, move onto another issue and show how both Augustne and Malcolm X covered it.

Unless your instructor directs you otherwise, you should not use first person pronouns ( I, me, my ) in such a paper.

A book review assignment is meant to be an analysis of a book, not a chapter-by-chapter summary of a book.  Instead of organizing your paper sequentially (the first paragraph is about chapter 1, the second paragraph is about chapter 2, etc.), organize your paragraphs around the themes of the book that are thread throughout the book.  Topics to consider in a book review include (but are not limited to):

  • What are the author's arguments, and how successful is she in making those arguments?
  • What sort of sources does the author utilize?
  • What methodology/methodologies does the author utilize?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the book?

A literature review is similar to a book review assignment in that it is meant to be an analysis of a theme or themes across several books/articles.   What have various authors written about your topic?   That said, as you will typically have less space to talk about each work (perhaps a paragraph or less for each work as opposed to multiple pages), you might end up moving from one author's findings to another.  For a literature review in a thesis, think of a literature review as a mini-essay within your broader thesis with its own mini-introduction, thesis statement, and conclusion.

Unless your instructor directs you otherwise, book reviews and literature reviews should be written like expository & research papers.  In particular, you should not use first person pronouns ( I, me, my ).  So, instead of writing: "I think this book is a good analysis of ___," write: "This book is a good analysis of ___."

Reflective essays are especially common in theology courses.  Reflective writing requires that you explicitly write about yourself and your own views.  To put it another way, you typically have two audiences to write for in such an assignment: your instructor and yourself.   As such, and unlike a standard expository paper, such essays require you to write about yourself using first person pronouns ( I, me, my) and use statements like “I think” and “I believe.”  Otherwise, a reflective essay shares a lot with expository writing.  You are still making arguments, and you still need evidence from cited sources!  Unless your instructor tells you otherwise, you should still include a good title, introduction paragraph, thesis statement, conclusion, and bibliography.

For online courses, you will likely have to take part in classroom or group discussions online, in which you will be encouraged or even required to respond to your classmates.  Such writing assignments often include a reflective element. Discussion posts are almost always shorter than essays and as such may not need long introductions or conclusions.  That said, a discussion post is not like a Facebook or social media post!  Good discussion posts are long and well-written enough to convey one or more thoughtful, insightful observations; you cannot just "like" someone else's post or only write "Good job!"  If you decide to challenge or critique a classmate’s post—and you are certainly encouraged to do so!—you should do so in a respectful and constructive manner.   As your main audience for online discussions are your own classmates and, to a lesser extent, your instructor, it is often okay to use relatively more informal language and to refer to yourself using first person pronouns ( I, me, my ).  Finally, as with reflective essays, discussion posts still benefit from evidence.  Even if a discussion post is relatively less formal than an essay, if you quote, paraphrase, or draw ideas from outside sources, you still must cite them!  If the online medium does not allow for footnotes, use parenthetical references for citations (see chapter 19 of Turabian).

Those of you taking preaching courses or earning a DMin degree will have to write and submit your sermons. On one hand, your main audience for such a writing assignment is the congregation to whom you may preach.  The language, tone, message, level of detail, etc. of a good sermon will depend on the precise context of your congregation and the message you want to impart.  Therefore, unlike an expository essay or a reflective essay, you have a lot more freedom in how you chose to organize your sermon, as well as how formal or not you want the language to be.

On the other hand, in submitting such assignments, you also have a secondary audience: your instructor.  As such, you may still need to include citations, even if you would not read them out loud in your sermon.  In submitting a sermon as an assignment, you may also need to include some sort of write up or commentary, which your instructor may require to be expository and/or reflective in nature.

Those of you earning an MAR or DMin will finish your coursework by proposing, researching, writing, and defending a thesis or project.   A thesis/project should be an original contribution to your field of study.  To put it another way, the audience for your thesis/project is not just your advisor, but the broader academic and/or ministerial community.   A good thesis/project can go on to become the first draft of a published academic journal article or a chapter or two of a book.  Your thesis/project should be largely expository, but it may also include reflective sections.

It is never too early to start thinking about what you want to do for your thesis/project! You can try to make your thesis/project writing process easier by writing your course papers on topics within or adjacent to what you think you want to do for your thesis/project; that said, if you do so, you will need to cite these earlier works in your final thesis.   See our citation guide for help with that.

Tips for Composing Good Academic Prose

  • Proofread, proofread, proofread!
  • Find evidence to support your thesis statement from good quality sources
  • Use quotations as evidence, not filler
  • Be careful not to turn long sentences into run-on sentences
  • Relatively longer paragraphs are generally better than short ones
  • Make sure your paper flows well from one idea to the next
  • When possible, avoid using the passive voice
  • Be precise and crystal-clear in your statements and arguments
  • Use the present tense when paraphrasing an author or setting up a quotation
  • Use repetition of words carefully

First and most importantly: Proofread your paper over before you submit it to make sure that it reads well and is without errors!  Read your paper over as you are writing it.  Check over your work with spell check.  Before you submit it, read it over one last time to catch anything you missed.  If possible, consider reading the work out loud: you will be more likely to spot problems in your writing than if you read it in your head.  If you are able to do so, ask a friend or schedule an appointment with the Writing Center for a review.  Another pair of eyes can often spot a mistake or problem that the writer has overlooked.

Find evidence to support your thesis from good quality sources.   Your research and writing should be based on the study of reputable primary and secondary sources.  Typically, this means books published by academic presses and academic journal articles.  Wikipedia, YouTube, random websites, and dictionary entries are generally not considered to be good sources for academic writing, although there are instances when it is acceptable to use and cite them, like if you were researching how topics in Black theology are represented or misrepresented on Wikipedia.  If you need help in finding good resources for your paper, consult a librarian.

Quotations are meant to be evidence to support your argument; they are not filler to meet a length requirement.   While you must quote and paraphrase sources, you should not quote or paraphrase more than you need.  When possible, consider paraphrasing over quoting.  Keep in mind that your writing assignments are supposed to showcase your thinking and writing, not the thinking and writing of whoever you are citing.

Be careful not to turn long sentences into run-on sentences.   Long sentences are not always bad: when well-written, a long sentence can read better and help convey complex ideas better than a series of short sentences.  A run-on sentence, on the other hand, occurs when multiple sentences are inappropriately lumped into a single sentence.  Therefore, when reading your paper over, keep an eye out for any sentence that you can break into multiple sentences.

Relatively longer paragraphs are generally better than short ones.   If your paragraph is three sentences or less, consider if you can write more about that paragraph's topic or incorporate it into another paragraph.  If a paragraph represents one idea, then a longer paragraph typically shows that you have better considered and flushed out that idea.  That said, if your paragraph is longer than a page, you could probably shorten it or break it into two paragraphs.

Make sure your paper flows well from one idea to the next.   Does your third paragraph make sense following your second paragraph?  Do you drop ideas and only pick them up much later?  Cut and paste sentences and paragraphs around as necessary.

When possible, avoid using the passive voice.   This can be tricky!  The passive voice is when you use the verb “to be” next to and in conjunction with another verb to make the object of the sentence into the subject.  For example, compare the active sentence: “Kate Turabian wrote the book” to its passive equivalent: “The book was written by Kate Turabian.”  Grammatically speaking, in the latter, passive sentence, "The book" is the subject, even though in a real world active sense, it is the object.

Writers consider passive sentences not as good because, like in the above example, they can be wordier than necessary and take the focus off the real subject. There are exceptions in which it is good to use the passive voice. For example, if you were writing an article about Kate Turabian, it would be better to write: “Kate Turabian was born in 1893” instead of “Kate Turabian’s mother gave birth to her in 1893.”  The former sentence keeps Kate Turabian, the focus of the paper, as the subject, while the latter sounds a little weird (maybe English speakers are too squeamish, but we typically do not recount someone's birth in that way).

At its worst, the passive voice can obscure the subject and make facts unclear. Consider the sentence: "Jackie Robinson's signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946 was considered a crucial moment in the Civil Rights movement." With the passive voice, the reader does not know who exactly considered that so?  Did all Americans in 1946 think this?  Did some specific people come to recognize it later?  Compare that sentence to: "Martin Luther King, Jr. considered Jackie Robinson's signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946 a crucial moment in the Civil Rights movement."

Be precise and crystal-clear in your statements and arguments.   Similar to how the passive voice can make facts unclear, overly general language can make for weak arguments.  Consider the argument: "Many people now support same-sex marriage."  Many people?  Which people?  "Many" and "people" are very general terms and do not tell us much in this statement; the more specific you can be, the better your argument:

  • Despite official church statements, many American Catholics now support same-sex marriage.
  • [Specific number]% of Chicagoans now support same-sex marriage.
  • Many South African theologians, including [so-and-so] and [so-and so], now support same-sex marriage.

In general, use the present tense when paraphrasing an author or setting up a quotation.  While you should use the past tense when writing about events in the past, you should in general use the present tense when discussing a scholar's writing.  Scholarship is a ongoing discussion.  When you read and discuss an author's work, that author is making an argument right now in the present, even if she is dead.  So, do not write:

   Carl Jung wrote: "The psyche...    Carl Jung said, "The psyche...    Carl Jung argued that...

but instead:

   Carl Jung writes: "The psyche...    Carl Jung says, "The psyche...    Carl Jung argues that...

Use repetition of words carefully.   When done well, repeating words can sound good and emphasize ideas.  When done poorly, repetition sounds monotonous. What Is a Statement of Work (SOW) In Project Management?

The statement of work (SOW) is a legally binding document that captures and defines all the work management aspects of your project. You’ll note the activities, deliverables and timetable for the project. It’s an extremely detailed work contract that defines the terms and conditions agreed upon between parties and lays the groundwork for the project plan.

The statement of work (SOW) is one of the first documents you’ll create to lay out the entire landscape of the project before you create a project plan and execute it. Because of the great amount of detail required, the prospect of writing one can be daunting. Let’s break it down into more digestible parts. Your statement of work will be much more detailed than your job estimate, which is a simpler document that outlines the work that’ll be performed and the costs associated with it.

The scope of work is part of the larger statement of work. In it, the way the project team will deliver the outcomes laid out in the SOW is described, so the scope of work is a much shorter project document .

Now that we’ve cleared the difference between a statement of work and scope of work, it’s important to note that the SOW acronym stands for statement of work, and not scope of work, which is a component of the SOW. Similarly, the terms SOW contract, SOW document and SOW agreement also refer to statements of work in project management and business.

What Is the Purpose of a Statement of Work (SOW)?

As noted, the statement of work is a detailed overview of the project scope . It’s also a way to share the project requirements, acceptance criteria and payment terms with those who are working on the project, whether they’re collaborating or are contracted to work on the project. This includes stakeholders like vendors and contractors who are bidding to work on the project.

An SOW contract is also helpful to project managers as it provides a structure on which the project plan can be built. The statement of work helps to avoid conflicts in the project. With detail and clarity, the SOW helps keep everyone that’s involved in the project on the same page and works to leave confusion to a minimum.

Types of Statement of Work

An SOW can be broken down into three main categories which can be defined as follows.

  • Design/detail SOW :  When you’re writing this SOW, you’re conveying to the supplier how you want the work done. What are the buyer requirements that’ll control the supplier’s process? You can use a requirements gathering template to ensure you gather them all. These project requirements can run the gamut from quality acceptance criteria and payment terms to the measurement of materials. In this SOW, it’s the buyer who’s being held responsible for the performance as he’s the one directing the project course.
  • Level of effort/time and materials/unit rate SOW: This SOW agreement is an almost universal version and it can apply to most projects. It defines the level of effort as well as the materials and cost per unit. It tends to find use in short-term contracts.
  • Performance-based SOW: This is the preferred SOW of project managers as it focuses on the purpose of the project, the resources and the quality level expected of the deliverables . It does not, however, explain how the work is supposed to get done. This allows a great deal of autonomy on how to get to an outcome without requiring a specific process.

How to Write a Project Statement of Work (SOW)

A statement of work is a legally binding agreement between a client and a vendor that describes the terms and conditions for the execution of a project’s scope of work. There’s a lot of information to describe in the SOW. You can create this on your own if you want, but using project management tools to make sure nothing is left out will prove helpful. You only have one chance to create your SOW document, and you want it done right.

Here’s an overview of the steps you’ll need to follow to write your statement of work:

  • Create a brief introduction for your project
  • Define the purpose of your project
  • Define your project scope
  • Create a work breakdown structure to identify your project tasks, milestones and deliverables
  • Create a project schedule
  • Define project requirements and acceptance criteria
  • Define payment terms and conditions

In terms of writing the statement of work, you’ll want to be specific with this project document. You want to clarify the terms used to make them universally understood and clearly define who’s going to do what and by what time those tasks must be completed. This avoids confusion later in the project when you can’t afford miscommunications or disputes.

Besides writing clearly, include visuals in the SOW to help focus the lens on various project aspects. Including visuals, be they project charts , graphs or other illustrations to help you clarify the project, will make the SOW agreement more digestible.

After all the work you’ve done to detail the specifics of the project, you don’t want to neglect the final, crucial step — getting the work signed off. You can’t proceed if you don’t have the authority to do so. Or, more accurately, you can, but it might cost you the success of the project . Make sure that those in authority have signed off on the statement of work.

What Should Be Included in a Statement of Work (SOW)?

There are as many parts in a statement of work as there are in a project, so it’s advisable to use a project management information system to help you manage its components. If you start by focusing on the parts, you can work yourself up to the whole. For a full understanding of an SOW, first, note the major aspects of the project it addresses.

1. Introduction

Begin with explaining what work is being done and general information about the project such as who is involved. State these parties. This will lead to a standing offer, which cements prices for products or services purchased for the project, and a more formal contract that goes into greater detail.

2. Purpose Statement

Start with the big question: why are you initiating this project? What’s the purpose of the project? Create a purpose statement to lead this section and provide a thorough answer to these questions, such as what are the project objectives, deliverables and return on investment.

3. Scope of Work

What work needs to be done in the project? Note it in the scope of work , including what hardware and software will be necessary. What’s the process you’ll use to complete the work defined in your project scope? This includes outcomes, time involved and even general steps it’ll take to achieve that. You’ll need to create a project scope statement to capture the information about your project scope.

4. Where Will the Work Be Done?

The team you employ has to work somewhere. The project might be site-specific, at a central facility or some, if not all project team members could work remotely. Regardless, here’s where you want to detail that and where the equipment and software used will be located.

Take those general steps outlined in the scope of work and break them down into more detailed tasks. Be specific and don’t leave out any action that’s required to produce deliverables and accomplish the project objectives. You can use a work breakdown structure to break the tasks down into milestones or phases.

6. Milestones

Define the amount of time that’s scheduled to complete the project, from the start date to the proposed finish date. Detail the billable hours per week and month, and whatever else relates to the scheduling of the project. Again, specificity counts. For example, if there’s a maximum amount of billable hours for vendors and/or contracts, note it here.

7. Deliverables

What are the project deliverables ? List them and explain what’s due and when it’s due. Describe them in detail, such as quantity, size, color and whatever might be relevant.

8. Schedule

Include a detailed list of when the project deliverables need to get done, beginning with which vendor will be selected to achieve this goal, the kickoff, the performance period, the review stage, development, implementation, testing, close of the project, etc.

9. Standards and Testing

If there are any industry acceptance criteria or quality standards that need to be adhered to, list those here. Also, if there will be testing of the product, list who will be involved in this acceptance testing process, what equipment is needed and other resources .

10. Define Project Success

Note what the sponsor and/or project stakeholders expect as successful project completion.

11. Project Requirements

List any other equipment that’s needed to complete the project and if there’s a necessary degree or certification required of team members. Also, note if there will be travel or other project requirements not already covered.

12. Payment Terms

If the project budget has been created, then you can list the payments related to the project and how they’ll be delivered: upfront, over time or after completion. For example, you can pay after the completion of a milestone or on a fixed schedule, whichever is more financially feasible.

There will be other parts of the project that aren’t suited to the above categories, and this is the place where you can add them so that everything is covered. For example, are there security issues, restrictions around hardware or software, travel pay, post-project support, etc?

14. Closure

This determines how the deliverables will be accepted, and who will deliver, review and sign off on the deliverables. It deals with the final admin duties, making sure everything is signed and closed and archived .

Statement of Work Example

We’ve been talking a lot about a statement of work, but a statement of work example can help make the subject more understandable. Let’s take a look at what a statement of work sample would look like in a real-life scenario.

Construction Statement of Work

For our statement of work example, let’s explore what one would look like in a construction project . We’re not going to go into detail, but rather sketch out a general SOW and how it would be built around the erection of a generic building.

The first thing you’ll want to do is give the project some context. That is, provide a short profile of your company. You can talk about its history, executive team, area of expertise and, especially, highlight similar construction projects. Other buildings that you built can be added here, and it’s even better if you can show that you’ve built similar structures in the past.

Now you’ll want to explain the why of the project. Why is it being built? That’s the most important question, but it’ll lead to further questions. Some of the questions you’ll want to pose and answer are what the deliverables of the project will be, certainly explain the objective of the project and what its return on investment (ROI) is. There are other questions, but those are a start.

Scope of Work

The scope of work is a summary of the project scope , or in other words, everything that has to be done in the project. You’ll want to list all of it, from drawing up plans to getting the site ready, preconstruction, building the frame, drywall, electrical and plumbing, HVAC and the rest. Not only that, you’ll want to detail the hardware and software you’ll need. Finally, don’t forget to include the outcomes, a timeline, duration, the steps you’ll take to go from start to finish, etc.

Obviously, a building exists in space. This is where you’ll name the location of the build, the equipment that you’ll need, including software, to get the site ready for construction and anything, such as scaffolding, signage, etc., you’ll need on-site to be ready to start construction and make sure it’s done safely and to code.

Project Schedule

You’ve touched on a timeline, but now you’ll write out a project schedule . It should include all the project deliverables, start and finish dates for all the tasks, but also the team members, subcontractors, vendors, et al., who are responsible for the construction. You need to include all stages of the project, from kickoff to completion.

Project Deliverables

You’ve mentioned deliverables before in the SOW document, but now you want to list all of them and go into greater detail. This includes a description of the deliverable and its due date.

Project Milestones

Use milestones to break up your timeline into phases. A milestone can mark the beginning or the end of a project phase. But project milestones can also indicate any major deliverable. They’re a good tool to keep stakeholders updated and track progress.

Late Nights, Early Wins: The Power of Experimentation and Perseverance

The exercise of self-discipline is what will keep you going through even the most difficult assignment..

There's little question that conventional wisdom is right: getting enough sleep is the best way to perform at your peak. But many high achievers have managed to buck the trend, insisting that they can't function until they've put in a few late-night hours. While getting adequate rest is clearly important, there are reasons to think that one of the best times for focused and creative work is in the quiet hours of the evening.

One big advantage of working late at night is that you can concentrate. Without the ongoing disruptions that punctuate a normal day, the mind has an opportunity to go deep into a complex matter or explore the creative project that's been on the back burner for months. Willpower is a muscle to be sure, but it's also a means to a broader end. The exercise of self-discipline is what will keep you going through even the most difficult assignment.

None of this is about becoming a night owl --it's about judicious use of time. There are times when you need to deplete yourself in order to concentrate, and nights can be the best time for that kind of deep work. It can also teach accountability. When you're all alone it's easy to slack off. When you push through to meet your own deadlines, you cultivate a strong work ethic and a no-nonsense approach.

Nevertheless, late nights must be carefully managed. You're not striving to work late nights for the sake of being up late. Rather, you're trying to maximize your time and energy. If you choose to work late, do so in a way that allows you to sustain your energy and be productive. You'll be surprised at your nighttime productivity when you give it a try. All you need is a quiet place to work, good lighting, and a comfortable setup.

And remember, it's all about balance. Enjoy the benefits of late nights, but also make sure you get enough sleep. Going without can be debilitating for your brain, body and everyday mood. It's about finding a cadence that works for you, alternating between periods of hard work and necessary rest, which is exactly what I do--one night late, the next not so much.

This is an opportunity to experiment and discover what works best for you. While some are naturally inclined toward early morning productivity, others find their groove in the quiet hours of midnight. The idea is to maximize your individual workflow and develop an approach that fosters your long-term success.

So, the next time you feel the urge to call it a night early, consider the extra benefits of pushing just a little further past the point of fatigue. Just maybe that is the secret to unlocking your native genius.

Announcing Structured Study Sessions!

Success study sessions.

Do you have students who need some support in learning how to study effectively? Are you assigning any group projects this fall? Do you need a place to send students who need some accountability in completing their assignments? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then please consider promoting Success Study Sessions in your class or syllabus!

This fall the Center for Student Success will be hosting weekly Success Study Sessions beginning September 8th. Study sessions are two-hour periods for students to work towards personal academic goals and complete classwork. They foster a consistent routine for students to practice time management skills, combat procrastination, and work on specific assignments. Study sessions can be used in a variety of ways which makes the time flexible and productive for students with differing tasks, timelines, and study habits.

Attendance will be recorded during these sessions and faculty can email [email protected] to request or confirm student attendance for extra credit or student accountability.

These structured study sessions will run Sundays through Thursdays from 6-8pm starting on September 8th, and locations will rotate to accommodate all schools. Specific locations will be confirmed during the first week of classes and shared on the Center for Student Success Website .

Introduction.

The Bike Company is divided into three main manufacturing areas: Assembly, Quality Control, and Repair. In the Assembly area, shop floor personnel put together the components that make up the bicycle, such as the wheels and gear. In the Quality area, shop floor personnel perform the final inspection on the bicycle. The goal of the final inspection is to ensure that the bicycle is working as expected, following the predefined quality and security standards. If the quality inspection fails, there is also an area dedicated to repairing. Three supervisors, the Assembly supervisor, the Quality Control supervisor, and the Repair supervisor, oversee each manufacturing area. Each supervisor is responsible for controlling different activities and dedicated shop floor personnel. Additionally, each area requires different types of equipment and skilled operators.

Work Center

In SAP Digital Manufacturing, the areas of Assembly, Quality Control, and Repair can be defined as three distinct work centers. A work center is a specific location at a plant where goods are made, processed, or stored. Work centers divide the portions of a routing along functional work lines. Therefore, a work center corresponds to a sequence of resources needed to make or assemble a material.

The Bike Company Work Centers.

In SAP Digital Manufacturing, work centers are used for the following purposes:

  • To determine the granularity of the work in progress (WIP) reports.
  • To group together different equipment that are system-wise managed as resources, for example, several identical drills are available at the same workbench.
  • To interface equipment on the shop floor.
  • To control where the demand is being released.
  • To control whether the logged in user can start work in a work center.

In SAP Digital Manufacturing, work centers are set up using the Manage Work Centers application.

On the header level, the work center is defined per plant and described by a main name, for example, WC-ASSEMBLY-00. On the Main tab, you can maintain the work center description and status (such as enabled or disabled). The work center category is used to describe the hierarchy for reporting purposes. The following work center categories are available:

  • None: No work center category is specified.
  • Cell: The work center category is a manufacturing or service unit.
  • Cell Group: The work center category is a collection of cells.
  • Line: The work center category is a single routing.
  • Line Group: The work center category is a collection of lines.
  • Building: The work center category is a building.

You can also define the maximum and minimum number of people assigned to the work center.

Manage User Assignments

To perform any action in a specific work center in SAP Digital Manufacturing, you need to be granted access. Access can be configured in the Manage User Assignments application, under the Work Center tab. If you need access to multiple work centers, you can configure several work centers for a single user.

3. Financing for gender equality and women’s empowerment

Under the supervision of the Programme Manager/WEE and Sustainable Livelihoods Team Lead (Programme Manager), the Programme Analyst is responsible for providing technical support in implementation of projects/programmes and activities under the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Programme. The Programme Analyst provides support to the management and monitoring of the budget utilization, provides support in managing partners, particularly Government/regulatory authority, private sectors (financial service providers, investors and business associations) and civil society organizations. The Programme Analyst is also expected to support the Programme Manager on opportunities to develop and strengthen partnership and new initiative under WEE thematic area, especially in green and blue economy, entrepreneurship ecosystem development and financing for gender equality.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide technical support to implement of programmes and initiatives on Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE)

• Provide inputs to the annual work plans and lead the implementation of projects activities and initiatives under WEE thematic area, according to UN Women Strategic Note and Project Documents;

• Gather inputs and coordinate the preparation of periodic narrative progress reports and expenditures status reports to the Programme Manager and designated focal points in RO and HQ;

• Provide support for programme implementing partners’ selection, establish and maintain good relationship with implementing partners on project implementation, working together with relevant team members;

• Provide support to programme implementing partners to ensure quality programme implementation through technical assistance, mentoring, training, cross-partner learning, and capacity development initiative;

• Work together and collaborate with other thematic area Programme thematic leads/managers (Governance, Women, Peace and Security and Ending Violence Against Women) to develop synergies and cross learning of programme development and implementation;

• Collaborate with UN Women Regional Office of Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) to implement programme on WEE and Sustainable Livelihoods;

• Record and maintain documents on relevant Programme activities, issues, and risks.

2. Provide substantive technical inputs to the management of people and finances of the projects and initiatives under WEE thematic area

• Coordinate development and preparation of financial resources of the programme including budgeting and budget revisions, and expenditure tracking and reporting;

• Monitor the allocation and disbursement of funds to implementing partners, vendors and consultant, provide support to review partners and vendors’ reports;

• Prepare documentations and reports for project closures, including asset transfers to partners;

• Supervise the designated Programme Associates and Assistants.

3. Provide technical inputs to  the monitoring, reporting, evaluation and learning

• Provide projects/programmes annual and quarterly reports; donor reports and other UN Women corporate reporting requirements, review the submission of implementing partner financial and narrative reports;

• Collect data and all necessary information for monitoring and reporting on programmes and projects from the planning to the evaluation phase;

• Provide information to update the programme monitoring framework to track the implementation of activities and the expenditure of funds, working together with Monitoring and Reporting focal point of the Country Office to support regular monitoring visits, develop monitoring instrument and monitor the programme monitoring and evaluation framework of the Programme.

4. Support partnership engagement with stakeholders and partners for strategic collaboration and resource mobilization

• Support the Programme Lead to identify, engage and manage relationships with key stakeholders and partners at national and sub-national level to support implementation and expansion of the WEE Programme/Portfolio focusing on, but not limited to green economy, establish strategic partnership and strengthen position of UN Women as thought leader in WEE;

• Provide technical support to identify, plan and engage strategic stakeholders (government, private sectors, businesses/private sectors, and development partners).

• Contribute and participate actively in the UN coordination mechanism (Working Groups, Gender Theme Groups), donor coordination (Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Coordination Group – GEWECG) on the issue related to WEE and green/blue economy.

University Statements

Faculty and staff monday update: cornell-uaw negotiations.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The University has continued to negotiate in good faith with the UAW over a new labor contract for our service and maintenance workers -- negotiations that continued throughout this weekend and into last night. After the University’s Thursday offer, representing a historic increase in wages for this bargaining unit, we further enhanced our offer yesterday to trigger, for the first time in a Cornell union negotiation, a cost of living (COLA) adjustment, in addition to the general wage increase, that protects all members of the bargaining unit from high future inflation.

Despite the University’s best efforts to negotiate a fair agreement and avoid a strike, UAW officials last evening rejected our offer. The union also continues to reject our proposal that we use the federal mediator assigned to the negotiations or a mediator of the UAW’s choice that could assist the parties in reaching a complete agreement.

The University offered our UAW employees a 17.5% increase in wages, compounded over the four years of the contract, and a change in time to promotion that would provide our lowest paid employees an immediate 10.3% wage increase . This is in addition to the enhancements noted in the message last Friday related to health and personal leave (“HAP”), vacation, and health and safety.

The University remains committed to bargaining in good faith.

In pressing for a wage increase even higher than the University’s historic offer, UAW national leadership has repeatedly pointed to Cornell’s $10 billion endowment. On this point, it is important to provide the following clarity:

  • The vast majority of Cornell’s endowment is restricted by agreements with donors and can only be used for purposes specified in the agreement.
  • The University does draw from the endowment each year, at amounts restricted by New York State law, for expenses such as financial aid and other student support, facilities maintenance and upgrades, academic programs, and research activities.
  • In fiscal year 2023, the endowment provided $386 million toward these kinds of expenses — money that would otherwise have had to come from sources like tuition and housing and dining charges.
  • Cornell is need-blind in its admissions and is committed to meeting the full need of those who choose to attend Cornell. As we continue our efforts to make a Cornell education affordable to more students and families in New York state and across the country, we cannot simply raise tuition to unmanageable levels to cover the cost.

The responsible management of the University’s resources still makes Cornell one of the best employers in the region and state with salaries outpacing local competitors.

Guidelines/Staffing Needs

With a strike declared, it is important to clarify guidelines for supervisors and managers and to share information about expected staffing needs.

First, we expect that some service and maintenance workers will strike and not report for work, as is their legal right. We also expect that other members of the UAW will continue to work during the strike, as is also their right. The choice belongs to each individual and a supervisor must respect an employee’s decision and avoid inquiring about that decision.

Work Expectations during a Strike

Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement that contains a valid “no-strike” clause limiting sympathy strike activity are expected to report for work. Similarly, all employees not covered by a collective bargaining agreement will be affected as follows:

  • Non-exempt employees who choose not to cross a picket line will not be eligible to receive their regular hourly compensation.
  • Exempt employees who choose not to cross a picket line will have their pay reduced accordingly.

Likewise, we respect the right of our service and maintenance workers to lawfully and peacefully strike.

Alternative Staffing Assignments

Student and Campus Life, Facilities and Campus Services, and the SC Johnson College of Business, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and College of Arts and Sciences are working with contingency plans that modify service levels and reallocate staffing as may be necessary within each respective area. Details will be communicated by and to the impacted units.
