1-6 Assignment: Writing Notes
In the article “Rethinking Work,” author Barry Schwartz’s purpose is to show the audience that the way we currently think about our relationship to our jobs, is creating disengaged employees and hurting companies overall. Our current work model is based off the outdated beliefs of a man named Adam Smith. Smith believed that all humans are lazy and can only be motivated by monetary rewards. This belief system is what has paved the way for the work model as we know it today. Companies only care about productivity and employees only work for the money. Schwartz drafted this article to challenge that belief system.
“I think that this cynical and pessimistic approach is entirely backward- it is making us dissatisfied with our work and it is also making us worse at them.” (Schwartz 2015)
Schwartz found that humans want to do meaningful work and the companies would benefit from happier staff. Work would not feel like such a chore if people felt that their work is purposeful. Happier staff would equate to better productivity and profitability. “When employees have work that they want to do, they are happier. And when they are happier, their work is better, as is the company’s bottom line.” (Schwartz 2015)
The bottom line is always productivity. If we shift that focus on to purpose, employees would feel invested in their jobs and therefore perform better at work. Schwartz cites studies that show that companies that have established better HR standards tend to be more profitable than
companies that do not value these standards. These studies also show that people will work harder at a job that is purposeful.
Companies only offer monetary rewards, and the employees are only working because they must make money to survive. If you took money out of the equation, people would do work that made them happy. Not just as a means of survival. “Too often, instead of being able to take pride in what they do, and derive satisfaction from doing it well, workers have little to show for it aside from pay.” (Schwartz 2015)
Schwatz lists many examples of instances where people have left jobs with higher pay, just to find a lower paying job that will offer more fulfillment or purpose in life. Some examples include a doctor leaving a respected practice to serve a low-income community and even lawyers doing work in underserved communities. We all know someone who has a similar story of sacrificing a higher pay check for a better quality of life or more meaning in life. People deserve fair, livable wages, but also meaningful work they can take pride in.
Schwartz’s main audience is the readers of the New York Times. I feel like this article is targeted towards the managers and owners of companies that still follow this productivity-based work model. By changing the environment and relationship of the work, they could end up with better profit margins and a revolution in how we look at work. However, there will be many challenges in getting most employers on the same page. Many companies are set in their ways, do not value their employees, and have not for a long time. In a world where technology and automation are shaping the way our work is done, the battle for better working conditions has just really begun as we begin to be replaced by technology.
