Teaching responsibilities may include assisting with lectures or tutorials and helping with undergraduate supervision. 

They are mostly full-time students 

This can be one of the big attractions for some undergraduates when they see PhD students still living a student lifestyle. However, most PhD students would not think that their lifestyles are something to aim for and the academic work they need to do does take up most of their time. The vast majority of PhD students are full-time and  part-time PhD students  find it difficult to maintain their studies over the six to eight years it may take to complete their research. They are, however, often very passionate about their studies. 

Some of them are getting paid to study

PhD students select their topic for research in one of two ways. They might decide on their research topic and then find a PhD supervisor or they may apply for one of the many advertised research positions. Searching for a supervisor can be a difficult route, especially if you change institutions between your masters and your PhD. Using the network of contacts you have built up during your previous studies or career is the key to finding a supervisor. The advantage of the second route is that the funding for the research is already in place and the student will receive a stipend as well. 

PhD students do worry about funding

Getting funding in place is a major worry for a large proportion of PhD students and it is often the case that many students start their PhDs without full funding in place. This is often why students might start on a part-time basis. PhD funding can come from a huge range of sources including the  government , grants and scholarships and most students  begin their search  with their university department.

How I use gentle, digital nudges to stay current in the post-exams world

Do you know the difference between a PhD student and a Ph.D. candidate?

A candidate is someone who has fulfilled all the requirements for the degree except the dissertation.

I’m a historian (see my earlier post about being a humanist at MIT ), so my path to candidacy differs a bit from other doctoral tracks at MIT. But whatever the discipline, the transition from student to candidate is an arduous process.

My department’s requirements involved: completing two years of coursework; demonstrating proficiency in a research language other than English; submitting at least one grant application; writing and revising a dissertation proposal that the dissertation committee must approve; and, most grueling of all, passing qualifying exams.

I became a candidate on November 24, 2015, after a weeklong examination period that involved three separate seven-hour written exam and a two-hour oral examination during which our committee members can grill us on anything they please.

I felt prepared for the written exams, which were open note, because I’d done nothing but read, take notes, and revise for the four months leading up to the exams.

But I lost sleep (at a time when I really couldn’t afford to be losing sleep) fretting about the oral exam. I shouldn’t have worried as much as I did. While there were a couple moments of panic—like when I blanked on the two ecozones separated by Wallace’s line—I survived “quals.”

So, what do you do once you become a candidate?

First, you take a break. I gave myself a little over a month to relax. I worked on lower-stakes projects, read fiction, attended departmental lectures, caught up with colleagues. I enjoyed the holidays at home in Chicago.

But once the New Year rolled around, a new sense of panic set in. Without the motivating pressure of exams to keep me working at a breakneck pace, how would I ever stay up-to-date in my fields? This anxiety, I’m willing to guess, is one shared by almost all academics.

While I’m actually more interested in how others have handled this pressure—comment away please!—I wanted to share a few tips I’ve picked up for keeping au courant .

1. Sign up for eTOCs That acronym stands for email Table of Contents alerts. Most journal publishers have a system that allows you to receive emails detailing the contents of their most recent releases. Sign up for a few of these and you’ll receive quarterly reminders that make it easier to stay on top of developments in the literature.

For some fields, it might not be necessary to read entire journals. In that case, pick some keywords and set up a bunch of Google Scholar alerts. Talk to your advisors and peers to see what works best in your discipline.

2. Make social media work for you Choose one social media platform and turn it into a research tool. My platform of choice is Twitter. You might be surprised by the number of scholars and professional associations that use social media. I rarely tweet myself, but I check Twitter at least once each day to find links to interesting articles, news about gatherings in my field, and to follow the work of scholars I admire. In addition to yielding worthwhile information, my Twitter sessions have the added benefit of tricking my brain into thinking it’s taking a break from work.

If you’re wondering how to curate your Twitter feed, first take a look at papers you’ve written for classes or published. See if the scholars that you cite in your own work are on Twitter and go from there. This is the most casual form of networking, but especially for introverts (like myself) these social media e-introductions facilitate in-person conference meetings, which can lead to future collaborations.

3. Listservs make life easier Most people at MIT know about the free food listserv. I’m not a member because I don’t need that kind of temptation in my life. Still, I’m a big fan of using listservs to join intellectual communities. In addition to the handful of MIT-based lists that tell me about upcoming lectures and workshops here on campus, I receive emails from communities at other Cambridge- and Boston-based schools. I’m also on a few listservs for universities in other cities. Even if I’m never able to attend those events, I know who is working on what where. If academia is about staying in the know, listservs help you do that.

I’ve written this from the perspective of a PhD candidate who needed gentle, digital nudges to stay current in the post-exams world, but I hope they prove useful for students, candidates, and beyond. Now comes the important question: What are your strategies for staying up-to-date?

It's unwise to apply to a doctoral program if you don't have a clear idea of how you might use a doctorate in your career.

In many academic disciplines, the most advanced degree one can earn is a doctorate. Doctorate degree-holders are typically regarded as authorities in their fields, and many note that a major reason for pursuing a doctorate is to increase professional credibility.

"If someone wants to be respected as an expert in their chosen field, and also wants to have a wider array of options in research, writing, publishing, teaching, administration, management, and/or private practice, a doctorate is most definitely worth considering," Don Martin, who has a Ph.D. in higher education administration , wrote in an email.

A doctoral degree is a graduate-level credential typically granted after multiple years of graduate school, with the time-to-degree varying depending on the type of doctoral program, experts say.

Earning a doctorate usually requires at least four years of effort and may entail eight years, depending on the complexity of a program's graduation requirements. It also typically requires a dissertation, a lengthy academic paper based on original research that must be vetted and approved by a panel of professors and later successfully defended before them for the doctorate to be granted.

Some jobs require a doctorate, such as certain college professor positions, says Eric Endlich, founder of Top College Consultants, an admissions consulting firm that helps neurodivergent students navigate undergraduate and graduate school admissions.

Endlich earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree, commonly known as a Ph.D., from Boston University in Massachusetts. He focused on psychology and notes that a doctoral degree is generally required to be a licensed psychologist.

"Since a Ph.D. is a research-focused degree, it can be advantageous to those seeking high-level research positions in scientific fields such as astrophysics or biotechnology," he says.

How Long it Takes to Get a Doctorate Degree

Martin, founder and CEO of Grad School Road Map, an organization that helps grad school applicants navigate the admissions process, says obtaining a doctorate is often a lengthy endeavor.

"Typically it can take between four and six years to complete any doctoral program," he says. "If comprehensive examinations and a dissertation are part of the graduation requirements, it may take a year or two longer. There is no standard amount of time – some students take seven to 10 years to finish."

Endlich says doctoral degree hopefuls should be aware that completing a dissertation may take a long time, especially if unexpected hurdles arise.

"My dissertation, for example, involved recruiting college students to complete questionnaires, and it took much longer than I anticipated to recruit enough subjects for my study," he says.

The standards for a dissertation, which include the proposal and research, are rigorous and usually involve a review and approval by a faculty committee, says Hala Madanat, vice president for research and innovation at San Diego State University in California.

"As part of dissertation requirements, some programs will require publication of the research in high-impact peer-reviewed journals," Madanat wrote in an email.

Types of Doctoral Degree Programs

According to professors and administrators of doctoral programs, there are two types of doctorates.

Doctor of Philosophy

A doctor of philosophy degree is designed to prepare people for research careers at a university or in industry, and teach students how to discover new knowledge within their academic discipline. Ph.D. degrees are offered in a wide range of academic subjects, including highly technical fields like biology , physics, math and engineering; social sciences like sociology and economics; and humanities disciplines like philosophy.

A Ph.D. is the most common degree type among tenure-track college and university faculty, who are typically expected to have a doctorate. But academia is not the only path for someone who pursues a Ph.D. It's common for individuals with biology doctorates to work as researchers in the pharmaceutical industry, and many government expert positions also require a Ph.D.

Professional or clinical doctorates

These are designed to give people the practical skills necessary to be influential leaders within a specific industry or employment setting, such as business, psychology , education or nursing . Examples of professional doctoral degrees include a Doctor of Business Administration degree, typically known as a DBA; a Doctor of Education degree, or Ed.D.; and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, or DNP.

A law degree, known as a juris doctor or J.D., as well as a Doctor of Medicine degree, or M.D., are also considered professional doctorates.

How to Get a Doctorate

Getting a doctorate is challenging. It ordinarily requires a series of rigorous classes in a field of study and then passage of a qualification exam in order to begin work on a dissertation, which is the final project.

Dissertations are difficult to write, says David Harpool, vice president of graduate and online programs at Newberry College in South Carolina. Some research indicates that only about half of doctoral students go on to finish their degree, and a main reason is that many never finish and successfully defend their dissertation

"Many of them are in programs that permit them to earn a master’s on the way to a doctorate," Harpool, who earned a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University in Missouri and a J.D. from the University of Missouri , wrote in an email. "The transition from mastering a discipline to creating new knowledge (or at least applying new knowledge in a different way), is difficult, even for outstanding students."

Learn about how M.D.-Ph.D. programs

There is a often a "huge shift in culture" at doctoral programs compared to undergraduate or master's level programs, says Angela Warfield, who earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa.

Doctoral professors and students have more of a collaborative relationship where they function as colleagues, she says. And there's pressure on each student to produce "significant and original research."

Many full-time doctoral students work for the school as researchers or teaching assistants throughout their program, so time management is crucial to avoid burnout. However, the dissertation "is by far the biggest battle," she says. The goal is to avoid an "ABD," she says, meaning "all but dissertation."

"In my writing group, we had two motivational slogans: 'ABD is not a degree,' and 'a good dissertation is a done dissertation,'" Warfield, now the principal consultant and founder of admissions consulting firm Compass Academics, wrote in an email.

How Are Doctorate Admissions Decisions Made?

Admissions standards for doctoral programs vary depending on the type of doctorate, experts say.

The quality of a candidate's research is a distinguishing factor in admissions decisions, Madanat says. Meanwhile, leaders of clinical and professional doctorate programs say that the quality of a prospective student's work experience matters most.

Doctoral programs typically expect students to have a strong undergraduate transcript , excellent letters of recommendation and, in some cases, high scores on the Graduate Record Examination , or GRE, Endlich says.

"The size of the programs may be relatively small, and universities need to be sure that applicants will be able to handle the demands of their programs," he says.

Because professional doctorates often require students to come up with effective solutions to systemic problems, eligibility for these doctorates is often restricted to applicants with extensive first-hand work experience with these problems, according to recipients of professional doctorates.

In contrast, it's common for Ph.D. students to begin their programs immediately after receiving an undergraduate degree. The admissions criteria at Ph.D. programs emphasize undergraduate grades, standardized test scores and research projects , and these programs don't necessarily require work experience.

Admissions decisions may also depend on available funding, says Madanat, who works with doctoral students to provide funding, workshops and faculty support to help their research.

Who Is a Good Fit for a Doctoral Program?

Doctoral degree hopefuls "should be interested in making a deep impact on their field, open-minded, eager to learn, curious, adaptable and self-motivated," Madanat says. "Doctoral programs are best suited for those whose goals are to transform and change the fields they are studying and want to make a difference in the way the world is."

Someone who loves to study a subject in great depth, can work alone or in teams, is highly motivated and wants to develop research skills may be a good candidate for a doctoral program, Endlich says.

Because of the tremendous effort and time investment involved in earning a doctorate, experts say it's foolish to apply to a doctoral program if it's unclear how you might use a doctorate in your career.

"The students are being trained with depth of knowledge in the discipline to prepare them for critical thinking beyond the current state of the field," Madanat says. "Students should consider the reasons that they are pursuing a doctoral degree and whether or not it aligns with their future professional goals, their family circumstances and finances."

Rachel D. Miller, a licensed marriage and family therapist who completed a Ph.D. degree in couples and family therapy at Adler University in Illinois in 2023, says pursuing a doctorate required her to make significant personal sacrifices because she had to take on large student loans and she needed to devote a lot of time and energy to her program. Miller says balancing work, home life and health issues with the demands of a Ph.D. program was difficult.

For some students, the financial component may be hard to overlook, Warfield notes.

"Student debt is no joke, and students pursuing graduate work are likely only compounding undergraduate debt," she says. "They need to really consider the payoff potential of the time and money sacrifice."

To offset costs, some programs are fully funded, waiving tuition and fees and providing an annual stipend. Some offer health insurance and other benefits. Students can also earn money by teaching at the university or through fellowships, but those adding more to their plate should possess strong time management skills, experts say.

"Graduate school, and higher education in general, can be brutal on your physical and mental health," Miller wrote in an email.

But Miller says the time and effort invested in her doctoral program paid off by allowing her to conduct meaningful research into the best way to provide therapy to children affected by high-conflict divorce and domestic violence. She now owns a therapy practice in Chicago.

Miller urges prospective doctoral students to reflect on whether getting a doctorate is necessary for them to achieve their dream job. "Really know yourself. Know your purpose for pursuing it, because that's what's going to help carry you through."

In my 15 years in academia, I would only really refer to someone as a PhD student. However, if someone was to introduce themselves as a doctoral student I would understand them to be a PhD student.

You make the transition from PhD student to PhD candidate after you complete all your coursework and your comprehensive exams (if required). A PhD candidate’s sole task is to conduct their research and write their dissertation. 

In other words, a PhD student is still completing their coursework. They could be on the first day of their PhD program. A PhD candidate has completed all of the requirements for their degree except their dissertation (yes, that’s the infamous “ all but dissertation ” status).

PhD candidacy means you’re a PhD in training. Now you’re ready to spread your wings a little–with some guidance.

Your time as a PhD candidate is your chance to demonstrate that you are ready to be an independent scholar. It’s also your chance to screw up and have that be okay–to have support. Your committee will help you. Since it’s the first time you’ll go through the process of creating and performing a study on your own, there’s no reason to believe you’ll be perfect at it.  That’s why the process is designed so that your committee can give you guidance.

But besides the simple definition above, what are the implications of being a PhD candidate vs student? Turns out, there are many important differences. Without keeping these in mind when you become a PhD candidate, it’s easy to spin out and get off track and not understand why. 

PhD Candidate vs Student: What Are the Differences?

While “PhD Student” and “PhD Candidate” are both steps on the journey to getting a PhD, there are significant differences between them. Here are some of the differences between PhD candidate vs student.

Lack of Structure

When you’re doing coursework, there is structure; there are assignments and deadlines. Of course, in graduate coursework teachers aren’t on top of you to turn in assignments like they would be in an undergraduate program. However, there is a deliverable (final project, test, etc) that you have to complete each quarter. You have things to complete by a certain time in order to move forward. 

Once you become a candidate, there’s no syllabus and there are no due dates. It’s completely up to you to move forward in the process.

Some people find it hard to make the transition to the lack of structure that comes with being a PhD candidate.

Academic writing skills become really important when writing your dissertation –more important even than they were during the coursework phase of graduate school. Academic writing is essentially a new language, with very specific meanings and requirements.

For example, you can’t just say “people believe x or y,” you have to say who they are and how you know that, giving citations to back it up. Many words (like “significant”) have very specific meanings and can’t be used the way you might use them in speech. 

As a PhD student, your professors should be teaching this language to you, so that as a PhD candidate, it will come as second nature.

How Many People Do You Have to Keep Happy?

Here’s another difference between being a PhD student vs PhD candidate: as a PhD candidate, you reduce the number of people that you have to keep happy. 

As a student, you have to keep in mind the requirements from each professor teaching your classes, as well as matriculation requirements from the department, preferences and advice given by your advisor, and even the research interests of the people for whom you’re writing papers.

Once you become a candidate, it’s just your committee that you have to keep happy, meaning that those are the people who will hold you accountable and outline the requirements for completion of the degree. For that reason, you’ll want to choose your committee members with care.  

Hopefully, by the time you need to choose your committee, you’ll have encountered professors who are intrigued by your research interests and with whom you feel personally and professionally compatible.

Freedom to Choose

When you become a PhD candidate, you get to work on what you want to work on. You can pursue the topic that interests you instead of whatever goes with the course you’re in. It’s a time to really apply all those skills you were accumulating in the classes. For example, the statistical procedures you learned in stats classes and theories you learned in the courses for your discipline.

This is the stage of culmination, when everything you’ve learned becomes not the goal, but the foundation for your own body of work. It’s one of the exhilarating (and sometimes intimidating) parts of being a PhD candidate vs a student.

Expectations and Support

Faculty often use the “go wander in the woods” approach for PhD candidates. It’s essentially like hearing, “Go find things and come back to me when you’ve got something.” They’ll usually tell you when it’s not enough, but they might not give you much direction about what they’re looking for beyond that.

The reason for this is to encourage independent scholarship. They want you to have the opportunity to build your own case for why and how this topic should be studied.  But this first foray into academic independence can be quite a challenge.

When they tell you to “go wander in the woods,” they’re not even telling you what kind of tree to look for. Sometimes you get specific directions, but sometimes you get vague answers like “go look for more.” This can be frustrating. Many clients come to me because they need more direction, which is understandable.

In your coursework, you were often given studies to read or asked to find studies on particular topics that relate to the course topic.  Dissertation research is more nebulous.  Your committee members want you to decide which directions to go in and which kinds of studies best relate to your research questions.

They won’t be asking you for the “right answer.” They’ll be asking you, “Why? Justify what you did or plan to do.”

Here’s another difference between PhD candidate vs student: a PhD candidate can put “PhD(c)” after their name, indicating that they have achieved status as a PhD candidate. However, I suggest using caution with this designation. The APA has expressed concern that its use may be misleading to the general public and cause people to believe you have a PhD.

PhD Candidate vs Student: An Interview With a PhD(c)

Did you notice a change in how professors viewed you, once you moved from “student” to “candidate”?

Yes.  It actually happened during my comprehensive exams.  Before that, when I had been asked a question, the professor already knew the answer and was asking to see if I knew also. In my comprehensive exams, I had become the expert and my committee members were actually asking questions out of interest. 

We were all pieces of a puzzle at that point. Instead of them saying, “tell me about John Dewy’s influence on education in the 1920s,” they asked, “How do you think Dewey influenced the school system’s openness to parental involvement in schools?”  The professor who asked that was genuinely interested, because she was an expert in educational history but had not specifically studied parent involvement in schools, as I had. 

That moment represented a big shift for me; it meant that as a PhD candidate, I had to then take responsibility for my own learning, because nobody knew as much as I knew about that particular thing.

It’s exhilarating on one hand, because you suddenly realize you’re the expert. On the other hand, it’s scary because we’re used to somebody else knowing the answer, being able to correct us if we’re wrong.

A Narrowing of Scope

It sounds like your topic was centered on something very particular, so maybe not a lot of other people have studied what you want to study?

Yes, that’s true.  When you go through a PhD program your research area is pretty narrow. You start out with a general interest in something, but as you go through your classes, specific areas start to stand out.  

I started out with an interest in egalitarianism in public education, but my own past experience combined with some seminal texts to direct me toward parent involvement in schools, specifically.  Some books and articles showed me that how schools treat parents can be an indicator of egalitarianism, maybe a clearer one than any rhetoric about the students.

So, there’s this winnowing effect, as you move forward.  Your professors love to watch this, too.  Especially in the smaller, seminar classes, they seem to be waiting to see what makes your heart beat faster.

Speaking of your heart beating faster, is one distinction of the candidacy phase to have more passion about the work you’re doing?

I think that’s ideal, for sure.  It doesn’t always happen, because some professors are really after students who will jump onto their research platform, because they can piggyback on the students’ research to get more publications. Good committee chairs, though, will want you to find your own path toward something you can happily spend a lifetime studying.

I suspect that one of the reasons people don’t finish their dissertations is because they weren’t really passionate about the topic in the first place.  It’s only one possible reason, but it should give a doctoral student pause.  

It’s really hard to finish a PhD, so you want to knock down any barriers to finishing.  Being passionate about the topic will keep you going when things feel onerous.  It’s like marrying someone with a sense of humor — even when you’re not getting along very well, there’s something you can always appreciate about your spouse.

Imposter Syndrome

What about “ imposter syndrome ”?  Does that come into play when you become a candidate?

It sure did for me!  To be one of the only people who’s an expert in that field feels like a huge responsibility because people are depending on you. Your research has to be accurate because people will be making policies based on your conclusions.  

Even with good intentions, your conclusions can be erroneous, and there are plenty of historical examples of policies being made on the basis of erroneous conclusions.  The consequences can be enormous.  And that’s all on you! 

So then the questions become, “Am I really up to this?”  “Who am I to drive policy?”  “I’m just a fallible human being, so why would (or should) anyone listen to me?”  Especially right after comps, I was thinking, “How could I be the expert? Nothing really has changed about me; I’m still the same person.  Yesterday, I was a student, but today I’m an expert?”

My observation is that this happens with women more than men, probably because women in authority positions are more often questioned than are men. But even for men, this seemingly sudden transformation can make you worry that you’re not qualified for the responsibility you’re being given.

The thing is, It’s not really as sudden as it seems. You’ve been studying something for, say, four years, so you have a claim to expertise. And you’ve been narrowing your interests all along the way, so you’ve been slowly building up your expertise.

Besides, in many good schools, you get warned a lot about how easy it is to make a mistake in research and how easy it is to make false conclusions. They beat that into you so much that it can become a constant doubt. 

In most primary and secondary schools, and sometimes even in college, they teach you to sit down, shut up, and learn something. For people to suddenly be saying, “tell me what you think,” can be challenging. I suspect that that’s another major reason people who finish their coursework don’t complete their dissertation: they’re not sufficiently prepared for this shift in roles.

Suggestions for PhD Candidates

Having been through this shift yourself, do you have any advice for students in this stage of their process?

Mostly, I think it’s a matter of taking personal responsibility and seeing yourself in a new light.  It helps me to consider this process as a transformation — like a caterpillar into a butterfly.  The “student” stage is the caterpillar stage, where you’re eating the milkweed, the knowledge, to nourish you.  

Then there comes a time when you’ve got to stop being a consumer and transform into a real researcher.  That’s like the metamorphosis stage when the caterpillar is in the chrysalis, melting down.  (And I have had plenty of meltdowns myself in this stage!)  That’s when you’re on your own, writing the dissertation.

That chrysalis stage is a real slog.  You try as hard as you can, and your proposal still gets rejected — twice.  Or the IRB wants you to structure the study differently, after your committee has already approved it.  Or you can’t get enough participants for your quantitative study or enough data for your qualitative study — whatever.  It’s the biggest challenge of most people’s life!

But if you stick with it, you actually do get this huge reward.  As a butterfly, or a PhD, you bring something unique to the world.  You have an important role in society that can potentially change the course of history — even if you don’t envision that in the beginning.

And that’s why the committee makes the process arduous.  They want to be sure you’re great at what you do, because there is potentially an awful lot riding on your shoulders.  I’m actually grateful for the rigor they demand.  I want to feel ready for the role I’m taking.

Ultimately, candidacy is time in the chrysalis.  It’s a time of transformation, built on one’s time as a student.  It’s a time in the dark and alone, which makes it challenging, for sure.  But I trust I’ll eventually emerge strong enough to spread my wings.

What is a PhD?

  • Types of Doctorates
  • A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest globally recognized postgraduate degree that higher education institutions can award.
  • PhDs are awarded to candidates who undertake original and extensive research in a particular field of study.
  • Full time PhD programmes typically last three to four years, whilst part time PhD programmes typically last six to seven years.
  • A PhD can lead to an academia teaching role or a career in research. A PhD can also equip you with skills suitable for a wide range of jobs unrelated to your research topic or academia.

Definition of a PhD – A Doctor of Philosophy (commonly abbreviated to PhD , Ph.D or a DPhil ) is a university research degree awarded from across a broad range of academic disciplines; in most countries, it is a terminal degree, i.e. the highest academic degree possible.

PhDs differ from undergraduate and master’s degrees in that PhDs are entirely research-based rather than involving taught modules (although doctoral training centres (DTCs) offer programmes that start with a year of lecture-based teaching to help develop your research skills prior to starting your project).

In most English-speaking countries, those that complete a PhD use the title “Doctor” (typically abbreviated to Dr) in front of their names and are referred to as such within academic and/or research settings. Those that work in fields outside of academia may decide not to use the formal doctor title but use post-nominal letters (e.g. John Smith PhD); it’s unusual though for someone to use both the Doctor title and post-nominal letters in their name.

PhD vs Doctorate

A PhD and a professional doctorate are both research-based terminal degrees.

However, where a PhD focuses on original research mostly around theoretical concepts, a professional doctorate focuses on examining existing knowledge to solve real-life, practical problems.

While there is much crossover between the two, a PhD is generally better suited for an individual to wants to advance the knowledge and understanding in their field, and a professional doctorate degree is better suited to a working professional who wants to better be able to apply knowledge and understanding to their field.

What Are the Entry Requirements for a PhD?

To be accepted on to a PhD programme, students usually need to hold at least a high ( 2:1 and above ) undergraduate degree that is related to the field of research that they want to pursue. A PhD candidate may also be expected to hold a Master’s degree , however, this does not mean you must have one, as it is still possible to enrol into a PhD without a Master’s .

Self-funded courses may sometimes be more relaxed in relation to entry requirements. It may be possible to be accepted onto a self-funded PhD programme with lower grades, though these students typically demonstrate their suitability for the role through professional work experience.

Whilst a distance learning project is possible , most PhD candidates will carry out their research over at least three years based at their university, with regular contact with two academic supervisors (primary and secondary). This is particularly the case for lab-based projects, however, some PhD projects require spending time on-site away from university (e.g. at a specialist research lab or at a collaborating institution abroad).

How Long Does a PhD Take?

Typically, full-time PhDs last 3-4 years and part-time PhDs last 6-7 years. However, at the discretion of the university, the thesis writing-up period can be extended by up to four years.

Although most doctoral programmes start in September or October, they are generally much more flexible than taught-courses and can start at any time of the year.

How Much Does a PhD Cost?

Tuition fees for UK and EU students vary between £3,000 and £6,000 per year, with the average tuition fee of £4,712 per year for 2023/24 programmes.

Tuition fees increase considerably for international students, varying between £16,000 to £25,000 per year, with an average tuition fee of £19,600 per year .

Nonetheless, most students will secure PhD funding in the form of studentships, scholarships and bursaries to help pay for these fees. These funding opportunities can either be partial, which cover tuition fees only, or full, which cover both tuition fees and living expenses.

UK national students can also apply for Doctoral Loans from Student Finance England if they are unable to secure funding.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

What Does a PhD Involve?

To be awarded a PhD, a doctoral student is required to produce a substantial body of work that adds new knowledge to their chosen field.

A PhD programme will typically involve four key stages:

Stage 1: Literature Review

The first year of a PhD involves attending regular meetings with your supervisors and carrying out a search on previously published work in your subject area. This search will be used to produce a literature review which should set the context of the project by explaining the foundation of what is currently known within the field of research, what recent developments have occurred, and where the gaps in knowledge are. In most cases, this will be an extension of your research proposal should you have produced one as part of your application. The literature review should conclude by outlining the overarching aims and objectives of the research project. This stage of setting achievable goals which are original and contribute to the field of research is an essential first step in a successful PhD.

The supervisor is the main point of contact through the duration of a PhD – but remember: they are there to mentor, not to teach, or do it for you . It will be your responsibility to plan, execute and monitor your own work as well as to identify gaps in your own knowledge and address them.

Stage 2: Research

The second year (and prehapse some of your third year) is when you work on your research. Having identified novel research questions from your review of the literature, this is where you collect your data to help answer these questions. How you do this will depend on the nature of your doctoral research: for example, you may design and run experiments in a lab alongside other PhD students or visit excavation sites in remote regions of the world. You should check in regularly with your supervisors to update them and run any ideas or issues past them.

Have the structure and chapters of your thesis in mind as you develop and tackle your research questions. Working with a view of publishing your work will be very valuable later on.

Stage 3: Write up of Thesis

The next key stage of a PhD is writing a doctoral thesis , which typically takes from anywhere between three months to one year. A thesis is a substantial body of work that describes the work and outcomes of the research over the previous two to three years. It should tell a detailed story of the PhD project – focusing on:

  • The motivations for the research questions identified from the literature review.
  • The methodologies used, results obtained, and a comprehensive analysis and discussion of the findings.
  • A detailed discussion of the key findings with an emphasis on the original contributions made to your field of research and how this has been impactful.

There is no universal rule for the length of a PhD thesis, but general guidelines set the word count between 80,000 to 100,000 words.

For your thesis to be successful, it needs to adequately defend your argument and provide a unique or increased insight into your field that was not previously available.

Stage 4: Attending the Viva

A viva voce , most commonly referred to as just a ‘ viva ‘, is an interview-style examination where the PhD student is required to engage in a critical appraisal of their work and defend their thesis against at least two examiners. The examiners will ask questions to check the PhD student has an in-depth understanding of the ideas and theories proposed in their thesis, and whether they have developed the research skills that would be expected of them.

The viva is one of the final steps in achieving a PhD, and typically lasts at least two hours, but this duration can vary depending on the examiners, the university and the PhD project itself.

Once you have done the viva – you’re on the home stretch. You will typically be asked to make some amendments to your thesis based on the examiner’s feedback. You are then ready to submit your final thesis for either:

  • PhD – If you pass the requirements you will be awarded a PhD degree (most common outcome),
  • MPhil – If you failed to meet requirements for a PhD, you may be downgraded to an MPhil degree (uncommon outcome),
  • Fail – No award is given, typically for cases of plagiarism (extremely uncommon outcome).

What Is It Like to Undertake a PhD?

We’re often asked what it is like to undertake a PhD study. Unfortunately, this isn’t a simple answer to this question as every research project is different.

What Are the Benefits of A PhD?

A PhD is the highest globally recognised postgraduate degree that higher education institutions can award. The degree, which is awarded to candidates who demonstrate original and independent research in a particular field of study, is not only invaluable in itself, but sets you up with invaluable skills and traits.

Career Opportunities

First, a PhD prepares you for a career in academia if you wish to continue in this area. This takes form as a career in the Higher Education sector, typically as a lecturer working their way to becoming a professor leading research on the subject you’ve studied and trained in.

Second, a PhD also enables the opportunity for landing a job in a research & development role outside of the academic environment. Examples of this include laboratory work for a private or third sector company, a governmental role and research for commercial and industrial applications.

Transferable Skills

Finally, in possessing a PhD degree, you can show to employers that you have vital skills that make you an asset to any company. Three examples of the transferable skills that you gain through a PhD are effective communication, time management, and report writing.

  • Communication – presenting your work in written and oral forms using journal papers and podium presentations, shows your ability to share complex ideas effectively and to those with less background knowledge than you. Communication is key in the professional environment, regardless of the job.
  • Time management – The ability to prioritise and organise tasks is a tremendous asset in the professional industry. A PhD holder can use their qualification to demonstrate that they are able to manage their time, arrange and follow a plan, and stick to deadlines.
  • Report writing – Condensing three years of work into a thesis demonstrates your ability to filter through massive amounts of information, identify the key points, and get these points across to the reader. The ability to ‘cut out the waffle’ or ‘get to the point’ is a huge asset in the professional industry.

Aside from the above, you also get to refer to yourself as a Doctor and add fancy initials after your name!

What Can I Do After a PhD?

One of the most desirable postdoctoral fields is working within independent Research and Development (R&D) labs and new emerging companies. Both industries, especially R&D labs, have dedicated groups of PhD graduates who lead research activities, design new products and take part in crucial strategic meetings. Not only is this a stimulating line of work, but the average salaries in R&D labs and emerging start-ups are lucrative. In comparison, an undergraduate with five years of experience within their given field will, on average, likely earn less than a new PhD graduate taking on a R&D position.

It’s a common misunderstanding that PhDs only opens the door for an academic career such as university lecturers and training providers. Although obtaining a PhD opens these doors, the opportunities extend far beyond educational roles. In fact, recent data from the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) indicates only 23% of PhD graduates take a position in educational roles . This low percentage is primarily because PhD graduates have a wide range of skills that make them suitable for a broad spectrum of roles. This is being seen first hand by the increasing number of PhD graduates who are entering alternative roles such as research, writing, law and investment banking.

How Do I Find a PhD?

We appreciate that finding a PhD programme to undertake can be a relatively daunting process. According to Higher Education Student Statistics , over 22,000 PhDs were awarded in 2016/17 within the United Kingdom alone. Clearly there are a huge number of PhD programmes available. This can sometimes be confusing for prospective doctorates, particularly when different programmes are advertised in different places. Often, it is difficult to know where to look or where to even start. We’ve put together a list of useful sources to find the latest PhD programmes:

  • A great place to start is with our comprehensive and up-to-date database of available PhD positions .
  • Assuming you are still at university, speak to an existing PhD supervisor within your department.
  • Attend as many postgraduate open days as you can. Whilst there, speak to current PhD students and career advisors to get an awareness of what PhDs are on offer.

Meet three of those inspiring graduate students who embody different values of the Spirit of Georgetown .

Data Science Innovator

Valeria Vera Lagos headshot

Valeria Vera Lagos worked as a software engineer in Jalisco, M é xico before coming to Georgetown. She was interested in artificial intelligence and how it could be used to address social problems, particularly emotional abuse against Mexican women. After attempts to learn data science skills on her own, Vera Lagos decided she needed a more solid academic foundation.

She came to study in the U.S. with the support of the Fulbright García-Robles Scholarship . Georgetown’s Data Science and Analytics program caught her attention because of its reputation as a leader in the growing data science field and her specific interests in natural language processing. Throughout her two years at Georgetown, Vera Lagos has excelled both personally and professionally. 

With knowledge gained in the classroom, Vera Lagos successfully developed software to detect misogyny in Spanish on social media, which proved to be a useful testing ground for upcoming projects. This past March, she led a workshop for Stanford’s Women in Data Science Initiative discussing her software and natural language processing .

Outside the classroom, Vera Lagos is an ambassador with Google’s Women Techmakers , a global initiative that provides community for women in tech spaces. She also serves as a mentor in the Data Science and Analytics Mentorship program, which pairs second years with incoming students based on their common interests and goals. Vera Lagos said she enjoys giving back as a mentor because of the impact mentorship has made in her life as an international student and the impact it can make on women in the tech field, which has historically been more male-dominated. 

 “My mother has always been a role model for me. She taught me the value of being myself and focusing on my career and integrity,” says Vera Lagos. “I would encourage women to seek mentors and support groups. Sometimes being brave is insufficient, and asking for assistance is acceptable.”

Vera Lagos plans to continue her work this summer with two projects. One focuses on helping Ghanaian women overcome the English language barrier by promoting the use of other languages in AI, particularly native languages. The second focuses on sentiment detection involving politicians and charisma using large language models, a field that she hopes to pursue in the future.

Infectious Disease Scholar

Matthew Boyce’s fascination with infectious diseases was sparked when he witnessed the spread of the West Nile virus as a kid. This led him to pursue a bachelor’s in integrative biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and then a master’s in Global Health at Duke University.

It was at Duke that Boyce attended a webinar in 2017 led by Dr. Rebecca Katz on pandemic preparedness. Feeling inspired, he emailed Dr. Katz for a job opportunity, which led to his work at Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Science & Security . Boyce worked for Dr. Katz for three years. This work, combined with his interest in policy and social sciences, led him to pursue the interdisciplinary doctoral degree in Global Infectious Disease at Georgetown full-time.

Through the program, Boyce worked with multiple international organizations, including the Global Parliament of Mayors, the Global Fund and the World Health Organization, and worked on projects in support of COVID-19 pandemic response efforts. Additionally, Boyce has published two edited volumes, written a dozen peer-reviewed articles and presented his scholarship at international meetings in Singapore, Switzerland and Sydney, Australia, to name a few. 

As he began the program during the pandemic, Boyce’s dissertation analyzed the different elements of the responses to the COVID-19 and mpox epidemics in cities around the world. Boyce hopes that his research will become a practical tool that helps prepare cities and our world for future infectious disease outbreaks.

“ There are three things I know for sure,” says Boyce. “We will see epidemics and pandemics in the future, our world will continue to become more urban and globalized, and there are practical ways for cities and local governments to engage with these issues and take the lead to address them.”

Looking ahead to the fall, Boyce is excited to start a new chapter as a tenure-track assistant professor at Texas A&M University in the Department of Health Policy and Management and as a faculty fellow at the USA Center for Rural Public Health Preparedness   – a highly unusual achievement for an early career scholar in the field of public health.

Educator for Others

Fikayo Odugdemi was born and raised in Kwara, Nigeria. Through fieldwork with NGOs and venture capital firms, she experienced first-hand how low-income communities are disadvantaged in terms of growth when education isn’t embedded in the local community. Seeing this disparity, Odugdemi felt called to become a changemaker for accessible education.

“As someone who is always thinking about the injustices in the world, I put on my researcher hat to figure out what I could do and what role I could play to tip the scales in favor of low-income communities,” she said.

Odugdemi researched graduate programs that fit her interests and discovered Georgetown’s Master of Arts in Learning, Design, and Technology . The program’s mission to train educators through theory and real-world experiences aligned with her personal and spiritual calling to serve others. It has opened doors for her, from presenting original research at conferences to getting hands-on experience developing a student organization.

Odugdemi presented her research at Georgetown’s 2023 Teaching, Learning & Innovation Summer Institute and at the AAC&U’s 2024 Diversity, Equity, and Student Success Conference , where s he led a 60-minute discussion session with professor Yianna Vovides entitled, “Fostering Equitable and Inclusive Online Learning Environments: A Framework for Practical Implementation.” Vovides noted that Odugdemi’s research combines principles of inclusive and Ignatian pedagogy, and that her contributions have been paramount for the program and the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship . As a result, this research was developed into a rubric now being used as a framework for online course design at Georgetown.

During her second year, Odugdemi and her peers created a Graduate Student Association for the Learning, Design, and Technology program. They wanted to address students’ interest in gaining greater awareness about professional development strategies and building stronger connections between the program and the Georgetown community. They hosted a dozen events this year which have fostered connection, skill-building and mentorship.

As she graduates in May, Odugdemi hopes to use her degree to create accessible and equitable learning opportunities for under-served communities around the world through research and building frameworks intentionally centered around diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.

RIT graduate pursues Ph.D. across time zones

Nastaran Nagshineh is one of the first Ph.D. candidates to bridge RIT’s Rochester and Dubai campuses. Her accomplishment creates a path for future students at the university’s international campuses.

Nagshineh completed her Ph.D. in mathematical modeling while working full time as a mathematics lecturer at RIT Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, teaching as many as five classes a semester. She described her Ph.D. journey as “an exercise in perseverance” due to competing demands and long days. Rochester is eight hours behind Dubai, and the time difference meant many late-night classes and meetings.

“I saw this collaboration as an opportunity, rather than as a challenge, because my primary adviser, Dr. Steven Weinstein (RIT professor of chemical engineering), and my co-adviser, Dr. Mohamed Samaha (RIT Dubai associate professor of mechanical engineering), both have the same area of research interest,” she said. “They both worked toward my success.”

Nagshineh is one of 67 RIT Ph.D. students who defended their thesis this academic year and who will earn their doctorate. RIT awarded 63 Ph.D. degrees in 2023.

In 2020-2021, RIT’s Graduate School met and surpassed the university’s goal of conferring 50 Ph.D. degrees during an academic year. That number will continue to grow as students cycle through the seven new Ph.D. programs that RIT has added since 2017, said Diane Slusarski , dean of RIT’s Graduate School.

Meeting these goals puts RIT on a path toward achieving an “R1,” or research-intensive designation, from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Learning. RIT is currently ranked as an R2 institution . Many factors go into changing a university’s status, including research investment and maintaining a three-year average of 70 Ph.D. degrees awarded per year, according to Slusarski.

“We have met the goals of the strategic plan, and now we look forward to contributing to the research innovation in the future,” Slusarski said. “We want to help the new programs thrive and win national research awards.”

RIT’s emphasis on high-level research is seen in Nagshineh’s Ph.D. work. She applies mathematical modeling to the field of fluid dynamics. Her research has been published in top-tier journals and has gained notice, said Weinstein, her thesis adviser.

Weinstein describes Nagshineh’s accomplishments as “a testament to a fantastic work ethic and commitment” and is inspirational to younger students at Rochester and Dubai.

“The collaboration between RIT Dubai/Rochester has continued,” he said. “Another paper was submitted a few weeks ago with Mohamed Samaha and Nate Barlow (RIT associate professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics) as co-authors, as well as Cade Reinberger, a younger Ph.D. student in my research group.”

Mathematical modeling is one of RIT’s newer Ph.D. degree programs, and Nagshineh is among its earliest graduates. The program has doubled in size since it began accepting students in 2017, Slusarski said. This past fall, the mathematical modeling program had 35 students, with two graduating this year.

Altogether, RIT has 13 Ph.D. degree programs currently enrolling 438 students, with computing and information sciences accounting for the largest with 117 students. RIT’s other Ph.D. programs include astrophysical sciences and technology , biomedical and chemical engineering , business administration , color science , electrical and computer engineering, imaging science , mechanical and industrial engineering , microsystems engineering , and sustainability .

New programs in cognitive science and physics will launch in the fall.

The growth in RIT graduate education—with more than 3,000 master’s and doctoral students—reflects a demographic change in the student population, Slusarski said. “We have a higher percentage of women in the graduate programs than we have for RIT undergraduate programs.”

RIT’s graduate programs enroll 42 percent women, according to Christie Leone , assistant dean for the Graduate School.

Nagshineh, who also holds an MS in electrical engineering from RIT Dubai, welcomes her role as a mentor to other women students on both campuses.

“As a young woman in an Arabic country, the power of women is often underestimated and undervalued, and I hope to serve as a role model to female students, especially those that question their path,” Nagshineh said.

She plans to continue in her career as a professor and a researcher. “I would like to pursue a research program where I can advise my own students and teach them more deeply.”

Investigative journalism work by Ohio University Fulbright Scholar and journalism graduate student will be featured on FRONTLINE

Patricia Marcano Meza

Patricia Marcano Meza, an Ohio University Fulbright Scholar who is pursuing a master’s degree in journalism at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, is both excited and nervous for the national premiere of a new documentary for FRONTLINE on PBS called "A Dangerous Assignment: Uncovering Corruption in Maduro’s Venezuela." It airs   on Tuesday, May 14, at 10 p.m. on WOUB HD. The investigative reporter from Venezuela is featured in the documentary as one of the reporters who covered government corruption for the Venezuelan independent news outlet  Armando.info .

“For us, because we are a small independent media in Venezuela, the opportunity to show this documentary in America is great. We are glad and honored. In Venezuela, there is a lot of censorship and persecution, so this is an important window to show the reality and to reach more people. The people can see what the situation is in our country and how we are doing journalism in a difficult environment,” said Marcano Meza. “But I am also concerned about the consequences of this. Our four editors-in-chief had to go into exile because they were sued by Alex Saab and threatened by the Maduro government. We don't want anything to happen to our team in Caracas. The Maduro government's response to the announcement of the documentary was a new attack on our work; through the Attorney General they are trying to involve us in a corruption case that we revealed last year.”

President Nicolas Maduro is South America’s longest ruling authoritarian leader and has held power since 2013. The FRONTLINE episode examines the Armando.info investigation of a food program called CLAP that was created by Maduro’s government in 2016 when Venezuela was in economic freefall and consumed by hunger. The CLAP program was a domestic aid initiative that was billed as providing high-quality, essential food items to Venezuelans impacted by the nation’s economic crisis — some of whom were at risk of starvation. But the CLAP program was not all that the government claimed it to be.

“We are so excited that this documentary will introduce Patricia’s work to an even wider audience in the U.S. She is a highly decorated journalist, one of Venezuela’s best, and a Pulitzer Prize finalist,” said E.W. Scripps School of Journalism Associate Director for Graduate Studies Aimee Edmondson. “She’s incredibly brave and talented.”

The documentary features groundbreaking reporting from investigative journalist Roberto Deniz and his colleagues, including Marcano Meza. They revealed that the government was purchasing low-quality products for the CLAP program. In fact, a chemical analysis conducted by the Institute of Food Science and Technology at Universidad Central de Venezuela at the request of Armando.info showed some of the powdered milk offered in the CLAP boxes was so deficient in calcium and high in sodium that a researcher noted it couldn’t be classified as milk at all.

The team at Armando.info uncovered that the CLAP initiative itself was enriching a close associate of Maduro’s — Alex Saab, the biggest contractor for the food program. The Armando.info journalists’ reporting ended up helping expose a vast corruption scandal that had benefited Maduro and other officials, spanning from Venezuela to Europe to the U.S. — and it ultimately made the journalists targets of the Maduro government. Facing threats, harassment and possible jail time, Deniz and some of his colleagues made the difficult decision to flee Venezuela. As a result of Deniz’s reporting, he has a warrant out for his arrest, his family’s home has been raided, and he has been sued for criminal defamation by Saab.

“I appear in the FRONTLINE episode talking about an investigation we did on the quality of food delivered by the government through the subsidized food program, and this story is one of several others involving corruption that we tell in the documentary, all linked to Alex Saab,” said Marcano Meza. “We have covered stories about Alex Saab since 2016, in particular my colleague, Roberto Deniz, who has led this investigation, but as a team at Armando.info it has marked us.”

In her master’s degree program, Marcano Meza is focusing on the study of data journalism and plans to take what she learns at Ohio University back to Venezuela to train fellow journalists so they can all improve the investigative work they are doing.

“I would like to learn a lot here and then go back to Venezuela to teach and train my colleagues to use data journalism and do deeper and better investigative work.”

Thomas Jefferson University goes viral after announcer mispronounces names at graduation

A university in Philadelphia is apologizing to its students and their loved ones after it became the center of attention and jokes over the weekend after videos of the presenter mispronouncing names during the graduation ceremony went viral on social media.

Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia apologized to students, families and their loved ones for the gaff Friday that took place during the graduation ceremony for nursing students, saying that the "mispronunciations occurred due to the way phonetic spellings were presented on the speaker’s cards, which was noted when the presenter apologized during the ceremony."

"The leadership and faculty of Thomas Jefferson University extend our sincerest apologies for the mispronunciations of the names of several of our graduating nursing students during our recent commencement ceremony," the university said in a statement, also posted to social media . "This ceremony is a celebration of the significant achievements of our students, and each graduate deserves to have their name honored correctly on this pivotal day."

The university also extended their apologies to the students' loved ones for any disappointment the mispronunciations may have caused.

"This unfortunate error does not reflect the immense respect we have for our graduates and the value we place on their hard-earned accomplishments," the statement added.

Thomas became 'Tha-mo-may'

In the videos from the nursing school's ceremony that went viral on social media, the presenter can be heard struggling with saying the names of many of graduating students. For example, instead of "Molly Elizabeth Camp" the speaker can be heard saying "Mollina -zabeth- cap," “May-vee Lee Zu-beth” for Maeve Elizabeth, or instead of "Thomas" they said "Tha-mo-may."

The mispronunciations elicited mixed responses from the crowd. While some laughed at the errors, others, such as Thomas appeared to be confused and even tried to correct the pronunciations.

About halfway through the presentation, the presenter was changed, with the original speaker apologizing for the mispronunciations.

“My apologies for the phonetic spelling or pronunciation of the names that was on the cards," the speaker could be heard saying. "I would have been better just reading from the book. My apologies, graduates."

Many roasted the university for being unable to pronounce "Thomas" correctly, given that the university's name is Thomas Jefferson University.

The incident even made it to Jimmy Fallon.

Tell us about your journey to the University of Minnesota.

I was hired as an assistant professor before I finished my PhD (I could hardly believe it!), did a brief post-doc, and then arrived to launch my research group in Summer 2005. While I was born and raised in Arizona, I had gone to college in St. Paul, so I already knew that I liked the Twin Cities as a place to live.

We would love to hear more about your research! What do you hope to accomplish with this work? What is the real-world impact for the average person?

My research group most often explores challenging analytical or nanomaterials projects in applied areas like sensing, agriculture, biology, or medicine. Our research goal is develop new materials and methods to take on important challenges like sensing pathogenic bacteria, remediating PFAS pollution, and improve agriculture yields.

What courses do you teach? What can students expect to get out of your course?

Right now, I'm not teaching anything because being Department Head is a time-consuming job. I've enjoyed teaching general chemistry, graduate-level analytical spectroscopy, and freshman seminars (one about science in dystopian literature and another about designing TED talks).

What do you hope to contribute to the chemistry community at the University?

Great science done by great people! As a large, urban public university in a department that serves so many people, we have a great opportunity to promote detailed technical education and research while combatting anti-science sentiments among the voting public.

When you visit other universities, what do you love to share about our UMN community?

I love to talk about the amazing community that we share, the high level of collaboration and multidisciplinarity, the student leadership, and all of the great things about living in the Twin Cities.

Tell us about an important mentor in your academic life?

My PhD advisor, Rick Van Duyne, was an important academic mentor. He treated me like a partner in my graduate research, making it possible for me to present in high-profile venues, write proposals, and mentor junior researchers. He had faith in my potential long before (and much more unconditionally than) I did. Rick was a real scientific visionary - always full of big ideas and not intimidated by technical challenges. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2019; I wish my current group members had the opportunity to know him.

Tell us about an important mentee in your academic life?

Goodness, that is a difficult question to answer because there are so many. I feel like you could ask me this question about any generation of my research group, and I'd have a compelling answer. For the sake of brevity, I'll pick just one: Becky Rodriguez. Becky was in my group from 2016-2021, and she did some impressive work developing sensors for toxins. What influenced me even more than Becky's science was her resilience and her clear focus on why (and for who) she was doing her PhD. Becky was also tireless in her advocacy for others and invested in her doctoral work with her whole heart.

What do you do outside of the classroom/lab/office for fun?

I'm an engaged parent to two busy kids, I like to travel, and I can often be found jogging or walking the lakes in Southwest Minneapolis.

What’s your favorite piece of chemistry/science pop culture media? Why do you love it?

I'm a big Kurt Vonnegut fan, so, even though it brings about the end of the world, I have to say "ice-nine."

What was your very first job?

Beyond babysitting, I was a bank teller from the time I was 16-19.

Where is your favorite spot in the Twin Cities?

The Lake Harriet walking trail

Tell us about who makes up your household (including pets).

My spouse and I have two kids, a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old, and we have an unintentional rescue dog named Gia.

Are there any family or cultural traditions you want to share with our community?

My family always played a lot of board games and cards. I would love to have a regular card club to play euchre, sheepshead, and samba.

What non-chemistry interest or activity might surprise department members?

Not sure if it would surprise people or not, but I have a thing for TED and TED talks. I've been to several of the events in person (amazing!) and even rented a hotel room in the Twin Cities once for several days to watch the live stream uninterrupted. I enjoy deconstructing the talks I love most to figure out how and why they grab me and inspire me.

Tell us about your journey to the University of Minnesota. 

Before living here, I grew up in a small Civil War town in Pennsylvania called Gettysburg and spent my entire childhood there. Gettysburg is supposed to be one of the most haunted places in the United States (because there was that one really big 3 day battle there like 200 years ago), but I never saw any ghosts or anything, which was disappointing :( From there, I moved west to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where I initially intended to work towards becoming a physical therapist. I quickly realized that I really didn't love the patient care field and then took organic chemistry, which was one of the best decisions of my life! I fell in love with chemistry, switched my major, and began working in the lab of Professor Yiming Wang. I studied the allylic C-H functionalization of simple alkenes and had a blast (and got published! Here's the DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.202216309.) Special shoutout to Yiming and my graduate student mentor Ruihan for being so supportive and helping foster my passion for chemistry. 

We would love to hear more about your research interests! What do you hope to accomplish with this work? What is the real-world impact for the average person?

Broadly speaking, I work in the field of asymmetric catalysis for the synthesis of organic compounds. A good analogy for the importance of asymmetric catalysis in my opinion (and many others) is to think about hands. Imagine you need to shake someone's hand to seem all professional and stuff, and the person reaches out with their right hand. Unless you're feeling real silly and goofy, you'd want to also use your right hand to shake their hand since they fit together really well. Chemicals also have "handedness" and this is super important when thinking about designing medications to interact with specific parts of your body. Receptors can have parts of them that are either right or left handed, and if you put a left handed molecule in to bind with a right handed receptor, what you want to happen won't (and maybe something awful will happen, like with an old medication called thalidomide. Google at your own risk). 

To be more specific, I am developing chiral (or "handed") organocatalysts that can reversibly bind with chemicals through existing groups in them, and mediate metal catalyzed reactions. The organocatalysts are called transient directing groups. This is really important because oftentimes in order for metal catalyzed reactions to occur, something irreversibly bound to the chemical compound is required to mediate such processes efficiently, which limits the scope of these reactions. In simpler terms, you can't make certain compounds because they need something stuck on them. Transient directing groups aren't stuck on your molecule after the reaction. Research is going good right now too so stay tuned for a publication (hopefully) in the near future to learn some more!

Are you involved in any student groups? What inspired you to get involved?

Last year I was involved with the DEI committee and was a part of the community building working group! I am super passionate about equity in science and making people feel welcome in general. I love connecting with others and making people from everywhere feel safe. I think being able to talk and work with people from across the world is a beautiful thing and makes us better (science agrees with me so I'm right). I'm hoping to be more involved with DEI initiatives in the future; I got a little busy during preliminary exam season. 

What advice do you have for incoming chemistry students?

I'm going to try to keep this short and simple:  1. Make sure you love chemistry. Definitely will need this to get through the harder times of graduate school.  2. Find someone (or many people) to work for/with who makes you feel supported, motivated, and seen. Again, the harder times of graduate school are much easier with this.  3. Find something else to do outside of chemistry! Burnout is real and spooky, go touch grass or be a nerd about something else. 

My current advisor, Professor Chris Douglas (I just call him Chris FYI) has been a phenomenal PI in my first two years of graduate school. I struggle with anxiety and depression which can be exacerbated in STEM fields since failure is a regular experience. Chris has made me feel extremely safe and empowered to try things and has supported me in reframing failure. We work together on difficult problems that arise during research, and I feel respected, competent, and most importantly, not alone. I can talk with him about my anxieties and concerns and know that I will be supported and understood. Additionally, I appreciate that I don't have to hide my queerness at work or in front of Chris, which is always a small fear in the back of my head. I can't thank Chris enough for letting me work in his group :)

What are your plans after graduation?

I am leaning towards working at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution (PUI) as a professor! I've had a lot of fun teaching (I love people, I know I said that before but I'll say it again) and I think I'm pretty good at it too. I also like that I can do research at the same time with maybe a little less stress than in an R1 setting. I would also enjoy moving to Europe for a postdoc before launching a more "permanent" career. 

I hope that I can be seen as a friendly person to say hi to, or to help make others feel comfortable. I also want to be a mentor for younger graduate students to ask advice from. I've received great advice and support from a number of older graduate students from aroun the department and I want to pay it forward!

I've been learning some gymnastics over the last few months and can now almost do a backflip off of solid ground!

Please give a brief description of your role within the UMN Chemistry department.

I started in the department in 1986 working with our majors. In 2004 I was asked to add Graduate Recruiting to my duties. We became the first department to review graduate applications online. When the internet was just beginning I designed our first web pages. For several years I taught a one credit course on Chemistry Careers. I have 3-5 years left and I plan to focus on alumni relations and bringing their career information to a website that can help our students navigate their careers. I also want to ensure our majors are getting the advanced lab opportunities that fit those careers.

I started as a student here in 1981 and changed my major three times. I ended up with a BS degree in education.

What professional successes are most important to you?

I was in four of our student's weddings and I am godmother to one of their kids.

A warm and welcoming atmosphere for our students is my number one priority. (Of course a few faculty over my time here have found you don't have to be a student for me to listen/care.) Those relationships have paid off - I have connected with over 500 former students on LinkedIn and they are coming back to help our students.

We go to a lot of concerts and breweries (we even brew beers together - our first was a clone of Futon's Lonely Blond - we called it "Not So Lonely Blond"). For my 60th birthday he surprised me and took me to Wolf Trap Park (the only National Park devoted to the performing arts) and we saw John Legend - AMAZING! We are going to Red Rocks this summer to see The Revivalist and Spoon and going up to Duluth for our annual trip to the "All Pints North" festival.

Wednesday nights I work with a group of 13-14 year old girls at our church. It's great to be a part of their lives and watch them mature.

First Avenue - just saw Saint Motel there.

Currently my 24 year old daughter Julia lives with me along with our dog Bella (a 13 year old Beagle Jack Russell). My son James (26) works for Charles Schwab and lives in Alabama with his girlfriend who is going to law school there.
