Welcome Speech in English: Best Samples, Examples & Tips

Why are welcome speeches necessary.

Most of the gatherings and ceremonies are held with a purpose. They are either planned events or spontaneous gatherings. In both cases, it is important to know how to organize such events. We must prepare ourselves to conduct the event properly.

Let us imagine that you are hosting a gathering. You have prepared everything, including food, drinks, decorations, etc., and even set up the stage. However, you forgot one thing – a welcome speech. What happens next? Do you start talking immediately without waiting for everyone to arrive? Of course not!

The same goes for a meeting. How many times did you attend meetings where people didn’t introduce themselves? Or worse, they talked about themselves too much during the meeting. In addition, some speakers talk directly to the audience without introducing themselves. This makes it difficult for the attendees to comprehend the event’s process and connect with its objectives.

So why is a welcome speech in English needed? To begin with, it is necessary to give a brief overview of the topic. Secondly, it helps to provide information about the organization and its history. Thirdly, it allows us to highlight our achievements. And finally, it creates a good impression on guests. Otherwise, they might ask questions like “Where is this event going?”.

Significance of welcome speech

The significance of the welcome speech won’t be apparent without understanding what makes up the history of an event. An event can be defined as a sequence of activities carried out over a period of time. These activities are usually organized into stages, each with a specific purpose. For example, an event may start with opening remarks, followed by a keynote address, and finally concluded with closing remarks. Each stage of an event has a different set of responsibilities.

In the case of a welcoming ceremony, the welcome speech is considered to be one of the most important parts of the whole gathering. In fact, it is the most crucial aspect of the entire event. This is because the welcome speech serves several purposes.

First, it introduces the guests to the host. Second, it provides information regarding the upcoming program. Third, it creates a positive impression among the attendees. Fourth, it helps in creating a sense of unity among the participants. Fifth, it helps in establishing good relations between the hosts and the guests. And finally, it ensures that the guest feels comfortable during the occasion.

Objectives of a Welcome Speech in English

The objective of a welcome speech in English is to introduce yourself and the rest of the attendees at the event. This is done through a short introduction about who you are, what you do, why you’re attending, etc. The following are the objectives of a welcome speech:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Provide Information regarding the event
  • Create a positive impression among attendees
  • Establish good relations between hosts and guests
  • Ensure guests feel comfortable during the event
  • Help build unity among participants
  • Explain the purpose of the meeting/event
  • Set up the agenda for the meeting/event
  • Make introductions
  • Give background info about the organization
  • Highlight achievements (if any)

A short opening speech for a commencement ceremony

To everyone present, good morning. A very warm welcome to our respected faculty, our remarkable parents, and our dear students. Special recognition is due for our Chief Guest (name of chief guest). It’s a true honor to have such a successful alumnus (or state the chief guest’s job title). We express our biggest gratitude for accepting our invitation to deliver today’s keynote speech.

I’m standing here as a lucky witness to our dear students’ academic journey. Our school is very proud of everything you have accomplished and your small but not minor contributions to society. You’ve brought prestige to our name and deserve the title of one of our school’s most successful and dedicated batch of students.

With your teachers’ guidance and parents’ support, you’ve reached remarkable heights. I’d like to take this time to extend my gratitude to our faculty and our parents, for understanding, encouraging, and nurturing our students.

Graduates, you are about to start another chapter in your life. An exciting yet scary period. From now on, you will face more challenges, but I am confident that you’re adequately equipped to face any tribulation that comes your way. Remember that with conviction and self-belief, no mountain is too high to climb. The laurels you’ve brought back to our school are only the beginning. A long opening speech for a commencement ceremony

Good morning everyone! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our esteemed faculty, astounding parents, and our dear students. I’m honored to open our commencement ceremony and stand here where many of our accomplished alumni who I look up to once stood.

I extend a particularly warm welcome to our Chief Guest (name of chief guest), who as one of our outstanding alumni, has really set the standard for exemplary accomplishments.

(enumerate key achievements of chief guest)

Her/his professional and philanthropic endeavors attest to their upbringing and the values she/he lives by. We want to thank you for responding positively to our invitation to be the keynote speaker on today’s auspicious occasion.

As another academic year reaches its end, I’m sure that our dear students are anxious and also filled with hope and excitement. This is their final school event in our renowned school/college/university (name of school). But hopefully, it won’t be their last awarding ceremony.

We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and passionate group of graduates who have earned laurels in honor of our school, adding to its distinction and great reputation. The amazing encouragement and unconditional support of our parents throughout the school year have been extraordinary. They have stood by their children in every school event. Our teachers and staff are truly thankful for the trust you’ve given us. Your children’s journey wouldn’t have been a huge success without your guidance and nurture.

It’s been a remarkable experience to witness the passion and commitment our students have exhibited in all their undertakings. I am filled with certitude that you will achieve whatever goal you’ve set your mind on. Adulthood is going to be jammed with more trials you’ve never imagined before. I am kidding. Maybe. Joking aside, you will win as long as you work hard and believe in yourself.

Remember that you are valuable and take every challenge you face as an opportunity to prove your worth and get better. Also, surround yourselves with people who are good for your well-being and treat them the way you’d like to be treated.

Maintain your sense of humor because not much else will get you through when the going gets rough. Life can be very special and you can truly make a mark, which doesn’t always need to have global proportions. Be accountable for your mistakes and learn from them. Keep nurturing your passions and remain as driven, bright, and astonishing as you are today. You are all wonderful and I can’t wait to see your future accomplishments, because they will be great.

Thank you and do us proud!

Our Chief Guest (title and name of chief guest) has embodied the values fostered by our prominent and respected college. (Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest). We honor you for your contributions to society and our city, most especially, which future generations will surely benefit from. With your hard work, dedication, and charitable spirit, you have set the goalposts we aspire to reach in order to make the world a much better place than we’ve found it.

(Initiate a round of applause)

Welcome Speech for a Yearly Function

(General greeting, i.e. good morning/afternoon/evening to all)

Honorable Chief Guest (name of guest), our beloved Principal (name of principal), our amazing faculty and staff members, our dearest parents and fellow students, and to everyone present, I welcome you all to (name of school/college/university)’s annual function.

My name is Lakshmi Gupta, a student of the Information Technology Department, and also the president of our school’s Cultural Exchange Organization and founder of the Languages Club.

It is with tremendous pride that I announce our prestigious school’s Silver Jubilee anniversary. We’re gathered today to celebrate 25 years of estimable service and success. The remarkable accomplishments of our elite school since its foundation won’t be possible without its long history of dedicated and respected teachers and passionate students, its tireless staff, and the unconditional support from our parents.

It’s also a great honor to introduce our Chief guest and keynote speaker. Any introduction won’t do justice to the extraordinary achievements she/he has attained throughout her/his career. (Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest). She/he is truly one of the most treasured and incredible alumni our school has produced. Without further ado, let’s give a round of applause to (title and name of chief guest).

Welcome Speech for the School Principal

Ladies and Gentlemen, good morning!

I’m truly pleased and honored to welcome our new principal (title and name of principal). He has previously worked for 5 years at Lumos International as principal and has succeeded in revitalizing their academic standing and programs, especially in English and Cultural Studies.

I have gotten to know her/him over the last few days during the transition phase and found her/him to be a brave and progressive intellectual, with a great ideology and vision for the future of (name of school), our beloved school.

On behalf of the current administration, our board of trustees, the faculty, the staff, and our student body, we wholeheartedly extend a great welcome to you (title and name of principal).

We hope that with your leadership, energy, and enthusiasm, we shall start a new era of learning and reach greater excellence.

Congratulations and welcome!

Welcome Speech for Teachers Day

Good morning! We welcome everyone today who is here to celebrate this annual event for their beloved teachers. We don’t always get to thank our teachers, but on this day, we pay tribute to our second parents.

They have provided guidance and given their light to educate and lead us to a journey of wonder, discovery, and knowledge. For their efforts, they deserve the greatest of honors and our utmost respect.

Our steadfast yet affectionate teachers should be our role models. They inspire us daily and motivate us to reach our greatest potential. They impart wisdom so that we don’t only excel academically, but as good people and responsible members of our society.

So on Teacher’s Day, it’s all about them and giving them the honor that many take for granted. Thank you, dear teachers!

Welcome Speech for Children’s Day

Good morning everybody!

Today we extend our appreciation and the warmest embrace to our beloved students to celebrate Children’s Day!

It’s been a blessing to be a part of nurturing children’s sense of wonder and imagination. These are qualities we often lose as we grow up, and it’s awesome to witness them happen every day.

Children’s innocence and love are incomparable and difficult to resist. Their smile is the closest thing to heaven that we can glimpse in the world.

School is your children’s second home, and we teachers are their second parents. We thank you for the opportunity to take care of and guide your little angels.

Join us to celebrate our students and make this day as eventful and fun as it can be!

Welcome Speech for Freshers Party

Welcome everyone to our Fresher’s party!

We’ve all gathered here today to celebrate the gift of possibilities and commence the experience of a new beginning.

It’s of utmost pleasure to welcome everyone, especially all my freshers to today’s festivities. I extend my deepest gratitude to all my teachers and everyone who helped make this event a reality. Look at this place, it’s amazing!

This is the period to create good memories and meet people who can be a permanent part of your academic and later professional lives. May you develop the relationships and acquire the necessary skills to succeed in life.

But for now, let’s leave our worries and cares out in the hall. Let’s celebrate your wise decision to matriculate in our institution. Our college has prepared special events and an entertainment program highlighting some of our talented students.

The next few hours will be memorable and exciting! Thank you for listening and let’s get on with it!

Have a good time!

Welcome Speech Samples for Business

Much like in academic settings, there are more formal events that happen in professional contexts. Some may need a welcome address to introduce special guests or welcome the attendees of a conference. Some are informal events that welcome those who are invited to special occasions at the office and the people they’re honoring. Note down the key phrases and objectives of the samples below and use the same structure in your own welcome or introduction speech in English.

Sample of Welcome Speech for a Goodbye Get-together

Good evening everyone!

Welcome to my farewell party. I know, I know. You all said you’re sorry to see me go, but that you all would need food and entertainment first to deal with your sadness. So here we are. I shall deliver.

As the Semisonic song goes “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” And so it is with great gratitude that the VP in Japan decided to retire early, so the end of his role can mark the beginning of mine. To Toni Takitani, thanks for deciding you’ve had enough!

Kidding aside, I’d like to thank my friends who made this very corporate event a huge success. Look at this, my goodness!

Most importantly, I want to impart my profound gratitude to my boss (name of the boss). Without you, this party won’t have a band. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Or I could, but none of them would have changed my life as positively as you have. It saddens me to leave you the most, but it comforts me that you were my biggest source of encouragement to go. Or it may have been your plan all along. Genius!

So to everyone who came, thank you. I’ll have time to thank you properly later, but for now, let’s eat!

Welcome Speech Sample for a Business Conference

Good morning to everyone who came out to join us here today. My name is Julius Kaizer and I’ll be hosting today’s events.

Before anything else, I’d like to take this moment to thank Merville & Posque Inc., their CEO Mr. Hyori Asano and his team for putting this event together in record time. It won’t be possible without your tireless dedication and contributions. I also want to thank everyone who came, our remarkable associates from Osaka, Chiang Rai, and Quezon, our wonderful clients who have stuck with us through thick and thin, and our amazing consultants in various fields of energy conservation. Your interest and patronage are very much appreciated.

A great welcome to all our extraordinary employees and staff members, some of whom have worked and grown along our company’s 23-year history. A big welcome, too, to our interns who have recently joined and brightened our corporate offices.

Today marks the 15th annual MPBC and it’s an honor to be a host in this glorious congress. I myself will be staying for the conference’s entirety to learn what I can about sustainable energy systems and their various implications and impact on the future of our planet.

The activities today will include an overview of all the forums, seminars, and exhibits around the MPBC complex. Second, we will have the inauguration of the new bio-dome on the grounds where we will also honor this year’s retirees. The afternoon’s seminars will kick off after lunch, and I encourage you to attend the discussions and learn about our future plans and projects. Finally, I’d like to encourage everyone to help yourselves to the snack stations in the hallway. Refreshments and sandwiches are on us for the duration of the conference.

I won’t keep you long and let’s begin the day. I wish all of you a valuable and wonderful time! Thank you.

Welcome Speech Samples for Family Functions

Huge family events often have speeches: weddings, birthdays, farewell parties, funerals, anniversaries, and so on. Some of these events normally have hosts and esteemed guests. Here are some tips and samples to inspire you.

Tips on Welcoming the Chief Guest?

If you’re searching for tips on how to make a welcome speech for guest, here are some things you can do:

  • When drafting your speech, do the research.
  • Highlight the key qualities that are worth mentioning in an opening welcome speech for event.
  • Take note of the welcome address speech sample in this article and create a framework from them.
  • Look up welcome speech quotes and choose the best one to use somewhere in your speech.
  • Greet the chief guest at the event personally and introduce yourself if you don’t know each other.
  • Extend your hard for a handshake and smile to express that they are honored and welcome to the event.
  • Smile and suggest they are being welcomed.
  • Address them formally with the usual Miss or Mr.
  • Escort the chief guest before you assume host duties.

Welcoming the Chief Guest with a Short Speech

It’s a great honor to welcome our Chief guest and tonight’s keynote speaker. I was worried at first about how to introduce (title and name of Chief guest) because any introduction would pale in comparison to the reality and immensity of her/his accomplishments.

(Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest).

She/he is the ultimate inspiration for young professionals everywhere who want to succeed in the field of international trade. Here to inspire us with her career journey and all the experiences she accumulated along the day, join me in giving a round of applause to (title and name of chief guest).

Welcoming the Chief Guest (Longer Version of the Speech)

Introducing our next attendee is a great pleasure of mine. When she/he accepted our invitation to be tonight’s Chief guest and keynote speaker, I almost jumped for joy. Then I realized I would naturally receive the task of introducing her/him. At first, this gave me great anxiety. How would I be able to pull it off and deliver an introduction that would give her background justice? Then I thought, no introduction would ever compare, so it was foolish to aim for success when failure is guaranteed. So I decided to just do it. Our chief guest has accomplished the following, to name a few:

As I looked at her/his professional and personal successes, I realized here is a woman/man who was faced many times with the certainty of failure but had given her circumstances a grad twist by attaining success against all odds. Then I thought, perhaps I should aim for success in this speech, after all.

She/he is an inspiration to many, not only for all the fields of expertise she has earned and the extreme success that went with the process, but she/he has also set the benchmark for philanthropy and good deeds. She/he has done this quietly, too, and she/he might strangle me for revealing it to the public. I didn’t even know half of the wonderful things she/he has done for our community before my research.

Without further ado, and here to inspire us with her wisdom and grand skill, join me in welcoming our Chief guest (title and name of chief guest).

Welcome Speech for Parents

Hi everyone!

As host and brother of the groom, I’d like to take this time to introduce the parents of the bride. Without them, my brother wouldn’t be the lucky and happy man he is today. More than that, I have witnessed how they accepted my brother and treated him as a son long before the engagement. I often tag along on family trips and have spent hours of wonderful conversations with them. Apart from my own parents, they are two of the most affectionate and hospitable people I’ve ever met. If I could meet a woman whose parents are just like them, I’d consider myself half as lucky as my brother.

Let’s give a round of applause for (names of the bride’s parents). Thank you for embracing my brother into the fold.

Welcome Speech Samples for National Holidays

Below is a sample of a welcome speech typically delivered during Annual Day. Substitute the appropriate details to match your information and use the framework in other speeches reserved for national holidays.

Welcome Speech for Annual Day

I am overjoyed to have this chance to welcome all of you to our elite institution’s 25th Annual Day. Today’s children are the hope of the next generation. All these graduates we see today, receiving awards for their achievements will go on to lead successful lives. Let them live up to the expectations set before them.

I am very happy to be a member of such an elite school where we learned from such great professors who teach us beyond the boundaries of the ordinary classroom. They’re also the minds and hands behind such a big event every year. I’d like to use this chance to organize such a wonderful event this year. It’s also a great pleasure of mine to introduce our Chief Guest.

Welcome speeches are necessary at events. They usually set the tone or expectations of the people who attended or participated in the occasion. There are many ways in going about delivering a welcome address speech. Review the samples in this article and do your due diligence to craft an outline, framework, or skeleton from the contents that you can use in welcome speeches of your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

A good welcome speech has the following qualities: * It is sincere. * It can hold the attention of the audience. * The ideas don’t ramble. * Welcome address quotes are used. One for a short welcome speech, and 2 for a longer one. Never 3, unless the speaker is trying to be funny. * The contents are relevant to the event. * It has an impressive anecdote. * The length doesn’t exceed 5 minutes.

The last segment of this article contains tips on welcoming chief guests, esteemed guests, or guests of honor. The tips contained here can be divided into things to consider while drafting the welcome speech, and things to do at the event itself when meeting the chief guest.

A simple thank you would suffice. Make sure you reiterate your gratitude. Some welcome speeches can end with a line that welcomes the guest of honor.

Depending on the context, a welcome speech doesn’t always need to be impressive. In some situations, a straightforward introduction is all you need. However, in some circumstances like commencement ceremonies, farewell parties, dinners, and some others, the audience is prepared to listen to long speeches. In this case, the speech needs to catch the attention of the attendees and maintain their interest. An impressive welcome speech often has an emotional element. Not just parroting big words to describe a person’s achievements or flatter them. Try to use humor if you’re funny by nature or if you can deliver the punchline well. Use popular quotes in your speech. Tell anecdotes relevant to the attendees. Or reveal an epiphany. These are how you should draft a welcome speech set to impress.

Make sure that it is relevant to the content of your welcome speech or the point you’re making. You can use phrases such as the following: * According to… * As the old saying goes… * There’s a quote that has always stuck with me… * Events like this always remind me of one of my favorite quotes… Try to find quotes that are unique and not cliche. You can find some in the lyrics of contemporary music, or lines and dialogues from books and movies, and so on.

Welcome Speech For College Function In English For Students

Speeches are an essential component of every professional or formal event. A welcome speech is a type of speech given by a speaker or the function's host to greet the distinguished Chief Guest and the other guests and express gratitude for their presence. It helps to glorify the occasion.

Everybody expects an introductory speech for an event. And that is because the opening speech sets the tone for the entire event. One can easily attract the attention of the audience with a catchy first line and introduction. So it is very important to make a good first impression.

To make guests feel welcomed, you'll need a powerful speech. Here are some examples of speeches that you might use to impress your guests. These speeches are categorised under several headings. Any of these can be used for your forthcoming events.

Let’s go Through Some Long and Short Speeches

Long speech  .

This form of opening speech for an event is extremely important if one intends to take time and welcome and extend gratitude to everyone involved in making the event successful.

Good Morning everyone! A very warm welcome to the respected teachers and the incredible parents. I am so grateful to welcome our students to the commencement ceremony (mention the name of the event). I feel privileged to open this event and stand here, where many accomplished people who I admired and looked up to once stood.

A very special welcome to our Chief guest (mention their name). They truly set a benchmark for multi-hyphenated achievements. They are an entrepreneur, coach and author of the best selling books in our country and even abroad. Their quiet charitable endeavours at such a young age speak volumes of the person they are and the upbringing they had. Thank you for accepting our invitation to address our students who are about to start another new chapter in their lives.

I express my gratitude to our esteemed Principal (mention name) for their approval. They have assisted us in not just our development but also in enhancing our creativity and knowledge. And last but not the least, a heartfelt thanks to our esteemed lecturers, without whom we would be incomplete as students. They were always here to assist and advise us in unimaginable ways. They helped us with the development of ideas and the execution of those ideas.

Our Principal, professors, other associates, and the administration department have all supported us. I also can't help but admire my team's tenacious attitude, which went above and beyond to guarantee in successfully organising and completing the event. We all also owe a special appreciation to our sponsors without whom the yearly celebration would be incomplete.

We are all gathered here to mark the end of a year and receive our much-deserved appreciation and certificates. A semester has passed, and another year has come to an end. I am certain that you are all feeling anxious and giddy with excitement at the same time. This is the final official ceremony that we will ever attend in our prestigious school/college (mention the name). The ceremony will last until (mention time), after which our guests will give a message to the students. Our students will also have the opportunity to ask questions and converse with our speaker during a question-and-answer session. Tea and snacks will be offered at the end. Please stay until the end of the session to show your support for our participants.

Our Honourable Principal will address the gathering tonight. I'm confident that their speech will not just be a collection of words but a strong motivational speech.

For all of the freshmen attending the college this year, I would like to inform you that our college toasts its annual celebration with great excitement and festivities every year, creating amazing memories. Of course, preparing for this big day takes a lot of time and effort because it cannot be achieved overnight. It requires meticulous scrutiny of every element, as even the tiniest oversight might derail the entire endeavour. So please give a huge round of applause to all the organisers!

Let us applaud the efforts of all the contestants who have worked hard in order to shine in their performance. We were quite lucky in having the support of all parties, not just for the participants, but also for the backstage crew.

For today's celebration, a variety of performances have been scheduled. We have Dance performances, singing, and playing instruments, and a variety of other activities like quizzes and other competitions. So everyone! Get ready for some incredible performances from our students, and trust me when I say that you will not be able to take your gaze away from them.

After completing the first round of performances, there will be an awards event recognising the talents and efforts of our college students who competed at various zonal, state, and national level events.

There are no free lunches in the world. Just because you studied here doesn’t mean you are entitled to all the opportunities. You must remember to work hard and earn every opportunity you want. Take every challenge you face as an opportunity for another chance to prove your worth. Also, know the difference between people to whom you have to prove yourself and those you don’t have to. Always remember to have a sense of humour in life. Only that will get you through the tough times. Life is truly special and with patience and hard work, you will certainly make responsible decisions for yourself, your family and for your country as well.  Take accountability for your failures and learn from them. Don’t let anything bring you down. Stay as passionate and driven as you are today. Keep achieving and reach great heights with flying colours.

That is all from me, friends! I thank you all for your patience. I'll meet you after the event. I hope you relax and enjoy the evening.

Short Speech

This form of welcome speech for an event is helpful when the presenter wishes to keep it simple, short and effective without diverting focus from the main event.

Good Morning everyone! A warm welcome to respected teachers, parents and students. A special thanks to the Chief Guest of the day (mention his/her name). It's an honour to have such an accomplished author and entrepreneur among us. Thank you (sir/ ma’am/ mx) for accepting the invitation to deliver the keynote speech today and for guiding our students for new beginnings.

Your teachers have guided you in all your endeavours and your parents have constantly supported you through it. This would not be the same without them. I extend my sincere thanks to all the teachers and parents for their understanding and support.

This is a highly multi-talented batch of students in our school. Aside from academics, we value advancement in the arts, cultural activities, and sports. One of the best aspects of our college is that it places equal emphasis on all areas to develop the overall talents and personalities of the students. I stand here, feeling lucky to be a part of your life, even if it is only in a small way. This school is so proud of all you have accomplished and every achievement you have garnered for yourself.   You all have been excellent performers in academics and won so many olympiads and awards. And you didn’t hold back even in extracurricular activities like sports tournaments like martial arts, football, basketball and badminton. Our school has also been a top performer in inter-school events like dancing, singing, speech, elocution and debate. The book club that you have started which is now thriving also shows your innovative side.

Our students have put their best foot forward to make this college function a success. Preparations have been underway since last month. Let us all take a moment to appreciate them.

Let me provide the schedule for today's function before we get started. To begin with, we have our principal inviting our honoured guests. We then have a speech, followed by the pupils' performances. At last, our honoured visitors take the stage and relate their experiences. Our distinguished keynote guest will then present medals to the students.

Finally, I'd like to wish everyone a good time at the celebration and I wish you all to take some lovely and happy memories with you. I now invite our Principal Shri (Name of your Principal) to speak a few words.

These are samples for a college event. To extend an understanding, let us go through a general guide for writing a speech.

Address the audience - "Good evening to everyone present here!" is an appropriate greeting. Then, using a sentence like "It is my pleasure to invite everyone to our magnificent venue tonight," welcomes the audience to the event. Keep the tone in check. If it's a special occasion, use a more solemn tone.

Welcome the guests - "A warm welcome to all the esteemed guests present here today!" is a simple and clear greeting to use. Use a sentence like "It's so nice to see you all here on this beautiful day" to make them feel welcome. More informal language may be suitable for an occasion with close friends and relatives. Include a few jokes in your speech to lighten it up.

Information about the event - Give a brief description of the event's name and purpose. If it's important, provide the event's name and age, and a little about the organisation that put it on.

Thank the helpers/aiders - Mention at least two people who assisted in making the event a reality. Mention their names as well as the roles they played.

Engage the audience - Mention any particularly noteworthy aspects of the incident. If applicable, introduce what's coming up later in the event or the future days. Pick the most significant elements and encourage people to stick around for or pay special attention to them.

Ending the speech - If appropriate, express your hope that the audience appreciates the event. Send your warmest greetings to them for the remainder of the event.

Duration   - Keep your discourse to a reasonable length. The event will determine the duration. A shorter speech is usually better because most people just want to get on with the event. Smaller events should last no more than 1-2 minutes, whereas larger and more formal events, such as conferences, should last no more than 5 minutes.

More Than Just a Place: Dean Long's Prepared Welcome Remarks

  • Posted August 24, 2020
  • By News editor

Dean Bridget Long at Zoom Orientation

First, let me emphasize how excited I am to welcome you. The last five months have been tumultuous to say the least. We have all shared uncertainty, fear, anger, and disappointment, but we come together today to start afresh, to begin something new.

And as you embark on this journey, one that is also new for each and every faculty and staff member at HGSE, I urge you to consider several things that might help guide your time this year.

First, be assured, you belong as part of this community.

As you sit watching your screen, some of you may be wondering, is this real?  Am I really a Harvard student?  Let me first assure you, yes, you belong as a part of this community.

And let me just say: you are an impressive group. Each and every one of you has shown us how you’ve successfully tackled challenges and made the most of the opportunities you’ve been given. Your accomplishments are not easily summarized by a test score or letter grade. Yes, there’s overwhelming evidence of how smart you are, but we also wanted you for your work ethic, your imagination, and your potential. Most importantly, we wanted your passion for improving education.

I hope you have already begun the exciting work of getting to know each other but allow me to spend just a moment introducing you as an incoming class. This year, the HGSE community extends not only across the U.S. but also includes students from 62 other countries. Joining you are students from Morocco, Ghana, Ireland, Vietnam, Jamaica, Finland Argentina, Bangladesh, and Australia, and I could go on. Among you are teachers, researchers, policymakers, leaders, activists, public servants, artists, innovators, and dreamers. Some of you have always known that you wanted to be in education. Others have transitioned from other fields. Still others of you have long been in the field of education, and you seek this time to reflect on your practice and learn more about the context and conditions in which you work. You bring an astonishing array of experiences, perspectives, and accomplishments. But no matter where you’re from and what you hope to do in the future, we are delighted that you’re joining us.

Just to give you a sense of this year’s fascinating, caring, talented, and entrepreneurial class, we have students who have: spent over a decade in leadership within the D.C. public schools; published children’s coloring books celebrating historical female trailblazers in science, technology, and art; and devoted themselves to improving education access and opportunity on the Acoma Pueblo reservation in New Mexico. We have someone who focused on expanding access to agricultural education in Davenport, Iowa; another person founded a non-profit that empowers young people to be role models in championing LGBTQ+ equality. We even have a student who performed on tour in the Broadway musicals Chicago  and Hamilton , and the former Executive Director of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. I know throughout the year you will learn about so many more of the interesting histories of your fellow students, as well as the faculty and staff.

The second thing I want you to consider is what do you bring with you?

I urge you to bring your full selves into the classroom and other activities. Bring your ideas, experiences, perspectives, and dreams with you as you engage with each other using a range of tools. In fact, this year’s circumstances have given us a unique opportunity: you did not need to leave your home communities to be a part of HGSE. You bring them with you. I hope you will share them with your classmates just as you are bringing the classroom into your homes.

Throughout the week, in an effort for our global community to get to know one another, I invite you to introduce yourself on Instagram, using the hashtag #IAmHGSE. And don’t forget to follow us at @HarvardEducation.

And to encourage you even further, I have a tangible way to help you share yourself and where you’re from. To celebrate this new community and our common mission to improve education, as well as to warmly welcome you, the Dean’s Office is giving each of you a free HGSE T-shirt. To have your shirt mailed to you, simply visit the Orientation section of the Canvas website and click on the link for further instructions.

I want you to show your HGSE spirit wherever you are in the world, and throughout the year, we’ll be inviting you to share photos of you in your home communities wearing the HGSE shirt. Be creative with what you share, whether it’s a photo of you hard at work or hard at play. Snap a picture next to a seminal landmark, include family members, or stand outside the school you support. I look forward to seeing how we cover the globe, and who knows, the shirts might even help you find each other. So be sure to order your shirt this week, and I can’t wait to see what each of you bring to HGSE.

The third thing for you to consider is what will we do together?

I do want to acknowledge that I wish we could hold this event in person, but I also don’t want to waste this valuable chance to work and learn together. I’m struck by something an old friend of mine from graduate school posted on social media:

“We may limit ourselves if we stick to the notion that a university is a spot on a map rather than a group of people.”

Stated another way, we are selling ourselves short if we only think of HGSE as a place — a spot on a map — rather than as a group of dedicated, talented people sharing a mission to improve education. So even though we may be physically apart, let us not be socially distant.

And this is the time to think boldly and expansively. Education needs us — the field needs you.

Millions of children have been out of school for months, and early studies suggest the learning loss has been severe, especially for those with special needs. Add to that the fact that millions have gone without regular access to the food and health care provided by schools, without the safety of adult supervision and after-school programs, and without reliable internet connectivity or access to learning tools.

The effects of this will be felt for a generation. There will be no return to “normal” anytime soon. And I don’t know that returning to “normal” should ever be the goal. From our youngest pre-schoolers to our adult students, there are major gaps in opportunity, achievement, and success.

And globally, while there has been a great expansion in primary education, attending school is not a guarantee of learning, and hundreds of millions of children still cannot read or write. Does that sound like something to aspire to return to?

And this moment has underscored more than ever that so many have experienced exclusion, marginalization, and injustice simply because of the color of their skin or some other part of their identity. We need to do far better than what has been considered the status quo or “normal” in society.

So what is going to be your contribution — make that our contribution? What are we going to do together?

Even before this day, many of you were already making your mark by helping those around you. And the good news is that you are now part of an institution that has a long track-record of doing the unimaginable. You see, 2020 is HGSE’s Centennial, and when this pandemic hit, we were just at the beginning of kicking off a yearlong set of events to reflect on HGSE’s history. Just like we never could have imagined what would happen during 2020, anyone from our early years would be shocked at how HGSE has evolved and grown during the past 100 years.

In fact, for a time even our existence was questioned as universities began to close education schools. But HGSE advocated successfully for education to be recognized as a profession in its own right, to be a specialized body of knowledge. It was people here who pushed to be inside schools, to be connected to learners, educators, and communities — not just researchers sitting in the ivory tower.

It was people here who were courageous enough and bold enough to question the deeply-held assumption that only some students could learn. All means all. You are now part of a School that graduated the first woman from Harvard, had the first female dean in all of the Harvard schools, and is for the first time being led by a person of color, an African-American woman. These three facts alone should tell you there is something special about this School.

But HGSE’s Centennial is about much more than reflecting on our past. This has been a pivotal year to consider what we want to be in the future, and no one could have imagined the dramatic turn those conversations would take due to COVID-19. We have been at our best when we have focused on our central mission to improve education, and I bring up HGSE’s history now to encourage you as you look ahead. Know that anything is possible when a set of dedicated, talented people come together to pursue a common mission. The last several months have underscored just how essential education and schools are to society, and this is an especially critical time with a flurry of new ideas, new collaborations, and renewed calls for investing in education. What if this is a time like no other — when we imagine something new for our students, their families, and ourselves?

Closer to home, as you embark on your HGSE journey, let’s start by considering what hasn’t changed — the faculty, the students, and staff all working together and wrestling with important issues in education. But this year of remote learning also opens up new experiences and new opportunities not previously possible. We are no longer constrained by time and space. We can be much more flexible because we are not beholden to logistical constraints.

And perhaps most importantly for an education school with a mission to impact the world, we can now more actively engage with the world around us. You are embedded in communities around the world who need our support and who are also our partners in this work. Bring what you see into the classroom. Bring the problems of practice you are grappling with to your discussions. Let us work on them together. Let us share research and expertise but also the lessons learned across the many communities you inhabit. Together you represent a massive network of educators. And you join the 30,000 alumni of HGSE along with our many partners, collaborators, and fellow educators.

Remember, HGSE is much more than a spot on a map, and this year we get to live that fact.

So what will we do together? This is the question I want you to explore, starting today. None of us alone has all the answers, but we can work together, and with those in our many, many communities, we can chart a new course for education.

I want to close by again recognizing this special beginning and new adventure. Welcome to the HGSE community. Be assured, you belong as part of this community, and I look forward to learning what you bring with you. Students, families, colleagues, leaders, and communities — are desperate for solutions. And I am optimistic, because of all of you. So let’s see what we can do to improve education and our world — together.

Welcome Speech on Annual Day Function in College and School for Guests

We warmly welcome everyone – outstanding guests, correspondents, teachers, and dear friends and parents of such great and talented children. Finally, the auspicious day has come; put an end to our inpatient anticipation and tireless preparations for this event.

I am a little surprised how a person like me, who loved every aspect of this stage, but so hesitant to come here and talk, now has the courage. With great pleasure and satisfaction, I stand here to give a welcome speech on our most expected annual day.

Indeed! The annual school day is the culmination of the school’s academic year. It is a time for celebration and recognition of the students as well as the school’s achievements.

It is also a time for teamwork and being proud that the school stands for and believes and values. Encourage the children to participate in the various events and see their blossom into an individual with several talents.

It is a pleasant evening, steeping in a solemn mood, atmosphere, and singing of my friends. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and “community spirit.”. I express a deep sense of gratitude to our correspondent Lady for giving her a helping hand on every right path we have chosen.

It is a day of joy because together, we will remember many of the moving stories we have experienced in the past years. It is also a day on which our old students, parents, and friends will learn more about the past and future development of the study and school. Our students have always been known as students with diverse capabilities, and I am sure that you will agree today.

We are at a stage where the chapter closes, and a new one begins. It is overwhelming that we are now counting the years since the school was founded. What a journey it was – every year it has its triumphs and struggles. It was an adventurous journey.

The year 2018 – 19 was celebrated in many ways. The Cricket team won, and our school got it with the association of 10 or 11. The similarity between them is that both could not be possible without the team’s effort. It is the most valuable efforts of students who have always cooperate to solve problems and enjoy happiness in the team.

The year was exciting, full of challenges and revival like everyone else. Some days were an endless stream of emergencies that came unannounced. Everyone allows learning, ask questions, reflect, and introspect. As we prepare for the year, we welcome new tryst, new questions, and new problems: new solutions and new heights.

Moreover, when we do, it, we remember that … “On each blade of grass sits an angel who still says: Grows! It grows! – More about school development and a few other points.

Finally, we know that: we have become stronger and intelligent. The happiness and satisfaction of teachers and students show that “everything is good” or “almost everything is good.” Thanks a lot for always trust and support.

We set our standards, strive to achieve them, and rise to higher levels. Science, evolution, and effort will never cease.

Once again, welcome to all these memorable festivities throughout the year. Everyone will be surprised by watching what will be on the stage. I want to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity.

Did you enjoy the fantastic breakfast and lunch today? Thanks to ABC catering service for such delicious food. It was a great day! Thank you all for completing this event and for your input. Thank you for blessing with your presence. I will now officially end this meeting with Vande Mataram.

A new school or a new college means meeting new people. Getting to know a different environment and a new set of individuals. Importance of Welcome Speech

Tips for Writing Welcome Speeches

Here are some tips for writing a welcome speech for students, followed by tips on writing a welcome speech for teachers.

  • Brainstorming : thinking always helps when you want to write a welcome speech. Ask yourself some questions and go from there.
  • Draft it: Once you have thought out what you want to write in your speech, draft it. Make a copy of your speech and write what you think should be included in the welcome speech. Don’t worry about making mistakes, as this is not the final outcome. This is a good starting point to reorganize your ideas and thoughts.
  • Tone: The tone of your writing should be professional first and foremost.
  • Spelling: Be mindful of your spelling mistakes. This can be done in your drafts, but avoid making them when you are writing your actual speech.
  • Revise:   If you have the time before presenting the speech, do some revisions. This would only take one to two minutes. This is just to make sure you have added everything that is necessary as well as your spelling and grammar are checked as well.
  • Length: Your welcome speech should not be too short that your audience will lose interest nor too long that may take up a lot of time. The length of your speech should be enough to last for 5 minutes. Nothing less than that.

Tips for writing welcome speeches for teachers:

  • Ponder:  Ponder on what you are trying or what you want to say. Also be mindful of the audience for your speech.
  • Outline:  After the first step, it’s time to outline your ideas. From your train of thought to your writing.
  • Scribble:  Once you have done outlining your ideas, it’s time to write the final output.
  • Reorganize:  Reorganize everything if you have the time. This is also where you can practice to see if the tone and words fit your audience.
  • Emphasis:  The tone of your speech should match the occasion as well as your audience. If you are using words that may be for adults, go back to reorganizing. The same goes if you use words that are fit for children and your audiences are college students.

How long is a welcome speech?

The word count for a welcome speech must be around 750 words, and lasts between three to five minutes.

Do you introduce yourself in your welcome speech?

Yes. You can introduce yourself in your welcome speech as you are the one presenting it. But do not add unnecessary information such as your age, location and contact details. Your audience need not know about that. They will think you are not taking this seriously.  So avoid that.

Why do I need to watch my words and actions when making a speech?

The reason to watch your words and actions is because you are up on stage making a speech. Be polite and professional at all times. Making rude comments or rude gestures should be avoided.

Welcoming people to an event or to a new environment is also one way of saying, I am happy to meet you. Remember, welcome speeches and first impressions often count.

Are you on welcome speech duty for an upcoming program or event? You’ve got nothing to worry about—with the right format and tone, it’s super easy to write and present a welcome speech for just about any occasion. We’ve outlined everything you need to know, from your opening greetings and acknowledgments, to establishing the right tone and nailing your closing remarks. You’ve got this in the bag!

Greeting the Audience

Step 1 Welcome the audience using serious language for a formal occasion.

  • Keep the tone more serious if it's an important occasion. Use more formal language and don't crack any inappropriate jokes. For example, at a wake, you might say, "We're so glad to have you all here tonight. We appreciate your presence at this difficult time."

Step 2 Greet guests informally by using light-hearted language.

  • For an event with close friends and family, more informal language might be appropriate. Include a few jokes and keep your speech more lighthearted.

Patrick Muñoz

Patrick Muñoz

Grab your audience's attention with a strong opening. Start with a loud voice and a strong presence that welcomes everyone and gets them involved. Ask a question they can respond to or tell a joke — anything to connect with the audience. Do something that grabs their attention and excites them and makes them thrilled about the event.

Step 3 Add individual greetings for any special guests.

  • Special guests include any people of honor, those that may play a particularly important part in the event, or those who have traveled a long way to be there.
  • Make sure that you practice all of names, titles, and pronunciations of the special guests before your speech.
  • For example you could say, "We'd like to extend a special welcome to our guest of honor, Judge McHenry, who will be speaking later tonight."
  • Alternatively to welcome a group of people you might say, "While we're excited to have you all here tonight, we'd especially like to say welcome to the students from Johnson Middle School."

Step 4 Introduce the event itself.

  • For an informal event such as a birthday party, you could say, "We're so happy to have you here tonight to eat, drink, and celebrate another year of Jessica's life. Now, let's get to it."
  • For a more formal event such as one run by an organisation, you could say, “We are so excited to have you all here to participate in our 10th annual pet’s day, organised by the Animal Rescue Group.”

Forming the Body of the Speech

Step 1 Acknowledge those who have played an important part in the event.

  • An example of acknowledging individual people is saying, “We couldn’t have pulled off this fundraiser without the hard work and dedication of Grace and Sally, who worked tirelessly from day 1 to make today a reality.”
  • Avoid reading off a long list of people or sponsors, as your audience will begin to get bored. Stick to just a handful of highlights.

Step 2 Mention any parts of the event that are of special importance.

  • For instance, at a conference, you might point out when the dinner will be held, or where particular sessions will take place.
  • At a wedding reception, you might note when dancing will start or when the cake will be served.

Step 3 Reiterate your welcoming line.

  • Alternatively, you could end the body of your speech during an informal gathering by saying, “I can't wait to see you all out on the dancefloor!”

Ending the Speech

Step 1 Say that you hope the audience enjoys the event, if applicable.

  • You could also say that you hope that the audience takes something away from the event. For example, “I hope that today inspires ideas and discussions around the ways that we can make our city a better place!”

Step 2 Introduce the next speaker if necessary.

  • At a formal event, you might say, "Now, for our speaker. Rebecca Roberts comes here from Montreal, Canada, and she is a leading expert in the study of the human brain. She'll be speaking tonight on what drives humans to make decisions. Let's welcome her."
  • For a more informal event such as a party, you could say, “Next up is Sam, who has been Kyle’s best friend for 10 years strong. He has a decade of embarrassing stories about Kyle to share with us tonight!"

Step 3 Thank the audience for attending.

  • Alternatively you might say, “Thank you again to everyone for being here tonight to celebrate Joe and Kathleen’s 50th wedding anniversary! Let the celebrations begin!”

Step 4 Keep your speech within a suitable time limit.

  • If you are unsure, ask the organiser or host what an appropriate length of time for your speech will be.

About This Article

Patrick Muñoz

To write a welcome speech, start with a greeting to your audience that’s appropriate to the situation. For example, you could try “Good evening ladies and gentlemen” if you’re introducing a formal event, or “Thank you everyone for coming on this sunny day” for a more relaxed occasion. After you’ve finished the greeting, introduce the event by talking about who organized it and what its purpose is. In the main body of your speech, acknowledge 2 or 3 people who played important parts in organizing the event. You should also emphasize special parts of the event that people should pay attention to, such as where dinner will be or where a conference session will take place. When you’re ready to conclude your speech, tell the audience to enjoy the event by saying something like “I hope you all enjoy the exciting speakers to come.” Finish your speech by thanking the audience for attending. Anchoring Script for College Function [With PDF]

In this article, you will learn how to write an anchoring script for a college function.

Welcome speech, lamp lighting, honouring the chief guests.

Calling Students for Performances

Ending the function.

Feature image of Anchoring Script for College Function

An anchor should always start a program with a quote, a poem or some famous saying so that he or she is able to capture the attention of the audience. For college functions, quotes on the topic of education, teachers, students, art, creativity or having fun, can be a good start.

Some interesting quotes that you can use are listed here:

  • “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination.” – Albert Einstein
  • “The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited.” – Plutarch
  • “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” – Zig Ziglar

Choosing a quote that goes well with the nature of the event and following it up with a good welcome speech is important.

A welcome speech for a college function can be something like this:

“Hello and a warm good morning/ good afternoon/ good evening to all! Today/ tonight is the day/ night for which we all have been eagerly waiting for months, for which our students and organisers have worked tirelessly for weeks.

The moment has finally arrived. I am [your name] , your host for today/ tonight and I heartily welcome you all to the annual cultural festival of [college name] . We are really honoured to have our respected principal, Mr/Ms [name], chief guests, Mr/Ms [names] , revered teachers, dear parents and of course, our lovely students among us. We are very glad to have you all with us today/ tonight and I welcome you all on the behalf of [college name] to enjoy the event.”

Most school and college functions start with a lamp lighting ceremony. If so is the case with your college, this is how you can invite the principal and chief guests on the stage to light the lamps:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King Jr

“Now, I would like to call on the stage our respected principal Mr/ Ms [name] as well as our chief guests Mr/ Ms [names] for the lamp lighting ceremony. Please give them a huge round of applause.”

Once the lamps are lit, the next step is to honour the chief guests.

“Now I would like to request our Principal sir/ ma’am to honour our chief guests with the bouquets and mementoes. We thank you for gracing us with your presence.”

“- Thank you, sir/ ma’am. I would now request you all to please take your seats. Thank you. Let’s give them a huge round of applause.”

Calling the Principal for a Welcome Speech

“Education can truly change the world. Without education and dedicated teachers, it would not have been possible for us as a society to come this far. We, the students of [college name], are so blessed and grateful to have such wonderful teachers among us who happily guide us at every step. It is our teachers who have made us capable and responsible.

Our hearts hold so much gratitude for all our teachers. So, on this special occasion, how can we let go of the opportunity to hear words of wisdom from our respected Principal Sir/ Ma’am. Now, I would like to invite our Principal, Mr/Ms [name], to come on the stage, say a few words and enlighten us. Please give him/ her a huge round of applause.”

After the speech

“Thank you so much, sir/ ma’am. That was indeed motivating and I am sure all the students present here agree. We are honoured and privileged to have you among us. Thank you. Please take your seat.”

“Now, our students of [course, year] will present the first act of the evening, a classical Kathak dance performance. Kathak originated in North India and the dance form was used to portray epic tales from Ramayana, Mahabharata as well as other Hindu scriptures. It has now evolved into a brilliant dance form full of technique and grace. Our students today are not only going to show you the traditional side of Kathak but also the more modern, fusion side of it. Let’s welcome them on the stage and present their performance.”

After the first performance

“Wow! What a beautiful performance! Indeed graceful and brilliant. They indeed deserve a huge round of applause!

Now, it is time for the next performance which I guarantee, is going to be equally mesmerising. Our musically-talented students are now going to present an intriguing musical stage. The story of Romeo and Juliet, but with a twist. Let us welcome them with a round of applause.”

After the performance

“That was truly ethereal. We are so proud of you all! Let’s give these talented young people a huge round of applause. They deserve it. Thank you for such an amazing performance.”

“The famous Irish poet, Oscar Wilde, once said – I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being. Indeed, dramas and plays can help us connect with the audience and get the message across in ways that plain conversations are unable to. And so, I believe that our next act of the event by the members of our drama club will also be successful in getting its message across. Let’s put our hands together and welcome the performers on the stage!”

“I am speechless! Wow! What a brilliant and emotional performance by our juniors. They did so well. Please give them a huge round of applause.”It really left us all in tears! The story was so heart touching. Very well done. Thank you for the performance. Please give these talented kids a huge round of applause.”

The anchor can similarly welcome different acts on the stage and carry on with the show.

“The most beautiful moments always seem to accelerate and slip beyond one’s grasp just when you want to hold onto them for as long as possible.” – E.A. Bucchianeri

“Indeed, all good things come to an end. We have now reached the conclusion of the event. I hope that you enjoyed all the performances and acts that our students had meticulously prepared. Thank you for attending this event and making it successful.

Thank you for your time, encouragement and support. I would like to especially thank our Principal and chief guests who took time out of their extremely busy schedules to attend this event and boost the morale of our students. Thank you so much. Also, all the staff members and organisers who helped us organise everything and make this event possible – Thank you!

Thank you, everyone! Have a good night.”

I am feeling proud in saying that the talent they have displayed here today is sufficient to say that they have the potential to become worthy citizens of our society. Education is about far more than what happens within the four walls of a classroom.

Undoubtedly we are very fortunate to have such teachers, trainers, and instructors who recognize this. If this infrastructure and teachers are the two resources available to the school, then definitely, we the students are the third ones. Really, one of the joys of teaching is to draw that creative, academic and sporting potential out of the students.

We all are gathered here on this Annual Day to motivate and inspire the young minds to showcase their talents. This is a highly important occasion for everyone. It is because of that apart from the fact that this celebration highlights our school’s continuous success in the area of education. And, this platform is also an opportunity to welcome our Chief Guest of today’s evening.

First, I would like to thank everyone who gave me this opportunity to welcome all my seniors and teachers on this memorable occasion.

School life is undoubtedly the best phase of life for everyone. Our parents, teachers, and friends all made this phase of life so memorable for us. We learned so many things from our inspiring teachers, made mistakes, made memories with friends, and whatnot. It was a long journey in itself.

Today marks the end of this school life, a life of sweet and bitter moments to cherish all our lives. We do feel a touch of sadness, but it is the nature of life to move forward. So, today, we will celebrate this moment with our beloved teachers and friends to bid a good farewell to all who have to leave now, with a smiling face.”

Good Morning to all!

“Honourable Chief Guest Mr. XYZ, Principal Sir Dr. ABC, Staff Members, and all the students present here. I welcome you all to the annual function of our esteemed college.

Behind huge success over the years are the dedicated teachers, motivated students, and helpful staff who give their best to make the college achieve great heights of success.

Besides, he is a published and extensively read contemporary world author. (the title of his book) is one of her treasures that has gained a huge international acknowledgment.

Respected Principal, Sir, Teachers, and dear students!

“We welcome you all today to celebrate this auspicious occasion of Teacher’s Day. We celebrate Teacher’s day every year on 5 September to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

“Those who educate children well are more to be honoured than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.”  Aristotle

This quotation cannot be more true! Teachers are parents to children when needed. They light us up and lead us through the pathway of life. They seek nothing but respect in return for their persistent efforts to give their best.

Teachers are our ideals. They inspire us each day and make us strive towards success. They equip us with the power of knowledge and propel us with endless wisdom to become better future citizens.

On that note, I would like to invite our Principal mam on the stage and deliver her thoughts on the day”.

Welcome Speech for Children’s Day

Good Morning Everyone!

“We welcome all the students as we celebrate Children’s Day today.

“There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million.” Walt Streightiff

It is true the imagination of a child is incomparable. Children are a creation of God, and their smile is irresistible not to make us smile alone. Their innocence is overwhelming.

We celebrate Children’s Day every year on 14th November in memory of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, a great admirer of children. We celebrate this day on his birth anniversary.

School is a second home for children, and teachers are equivalent to the parents when students need them the most. This day is celebrated with many events, which cannot be possible without the contribution of our lovely teachers.

Thanking you all, I would like to start the day’s events without further delay”.

Office of the President

Welcome speech.

Remarks by Dr. Nayef H. Samhat at the announcement of his appointment as president of Wofford College, May 14, 2013

Thank you so much.

I would like to thank Harold Chandler, the Board of Trustees, Mike James and members of the search committee, David Beacham for his talents at organizing this process, and the first friend I met at Wofford, Ed Story. Of course, I particularly want to thank you, the Wofford community of faculty, staff and administrators, and students, whom my wife Prema – who is right there - and I met a couple of short weeks ago.

Everyone we have met throughout this process exemplifies a deep care and affection for this wonderful college, and welcomed us with a graciousness of heart and spirit that we easily and sincerely embraced.

You may not know this, but one of the great things about being announced as a college president is that you get to see all of your kids in one place at one time!

And I am happy to show them off for anyone who wants to see! Alia, Jehani and Leila…With them is, of course, is my wife, Prema, whom many of you have seen and met already….

And next to them is my dad, Harold. He is 85, and spends lots of time shooting around from Detroit to Tampa, with an occasional stop in Mt. Vernon, Ohio – soon to be Spartanburg. Whatever good I have become in my life, I owe to him and my mom … hard work, sound and ethical values, loving and devoted partner and father – those are the principles of a good life.

I have to admit that when I started out in the academy I never imagined that I might be standing here before you, at this great institution bearing the name of Benjamin Wofford, as the 11th president, following in a long line of great leaders.

So I’d like to offer a brief thought on the concept of imagination – something easily referred to but much underappreciated, and it comes in different forms.

For example, in my own scholarship I’ve written about a world political order that might be more just, humane and inclusive, built around representative non-governmental organizations, transparent international organizations, and a rising consciousness and commitment to enhancing the human condition for all.

But this is the thing about imagination. It is flexible – it evolves with experience, understanding, opportunity and, to be sure, a dose of luck every once in a while. Just as I never imagined standing here, I know plenty of colleagues who considered the idea of a more just world political order quite fanciful, even naïve, in a world dominated by conflict and power.

Yet without imagination, where are we? Without imagination, how do we know where we might want to go? How do we push the horizons our reality appears to impose on us?

I argue we cannot do so without imagination. Absent the capacity to create in our mind a certain vision of what we want to be or do, or what our world might be like, we are mired in a constant place and space, without inspiration, without hope.

It is, in other words, imagination that allows us to change the world in which we live, to make it a place we want to live, a place we hope it can be.

These sound, I am sure, like aspirational words that lack substance. Even the kind of words you might hear at the announcement of a new college president!

But for me today the point is a central one, for higher education has a profound role in fostering imagination – expanding the horizons of young women and men – to guide them to thinking and conceptualizing all of the ways in which they can push their own horizons of the possible and, thereby, in collective, change the world in which we live.

And here, it has been my belief that the small, residential liberal arts college is the most extraordinary experience for students in that pursuit. Small classes, intimate learning environments, easy access to all of the opportunities available, a community fabric that is real, deep and enduring, and from these elements come lifelong friendships, lasting memories, and a set of skills that allow students to adapt to a world and its own opportunities that we cannot yet imagine. In other words, I believe the kind of educational experience provided by our liberal arts colleges offers students a lifetime of re-imagination.

Of course, this is no small order, but it is essential to fostering the kind of citizenship that is meaningful, productive and defined by strong ethical purpose.

The task, however, is to begin to imagine what these, our kind of liberal arts institutions, might be like in the future of higher education. And I would argue that the world of higher education is at a critical point deserving of much imagination. There are challenges: the rapid impact of technology on learning inside and outside the classroom, the changing nature of knowledge, the pressures on families to afford college, and the pressure on colleges to afford providing it. We ask ourselves not why we should become, but how will we become a mirror of a changing society? More importantly, how will we continue to strengthen the experience of the small residential liberal arts college?

Absent the creative and imaginative mind, we would, indeed, be stuck, mired and fixed, without a clue of what to do. But this is our time – challenges are not roadblocks, but opportunities to re-imagine the possibilities.

And here we are at Wofford College. I stand with terrific pride and deep humbleness, following the footsteps of President Bernie Dunlap and those before him, a college strong in every way, and I imagine: What can we do? Who will we be? How will we do it?

The beauty of these moments of opportunity is that they allow us the inspiration to activate the collective imagination of the community, to bring together voices, ideas, visions, of Wofford College not today, but for the next generation in this, the 21st century.

It is an opportunity for us to define the place of Wofford College among the great liberal arts colleges in American higher education.

It is an opportunity to shape the ways in which young women and men will define their own imaginations of the possible, to create the world I myself have imagined: a more just, humane and inclusive world.

It is not a frivolous suggestion that students come to understand that they can make difference in their world – this is our essential purpose in educating.

And so we now will be inspired by this great and unique opportunity to imagine Wofford College for the coming generation, an institution well aware of its past and well eager to embrace the future.

For the ability to simply imagine, I hope you see, has shaped my life, and brought me here, to this college, on this day, on this stage, and I am grateful, humbled, and thank you.

Morehouse Students Turn Their Backs, Walk Out of Graduation as Joe Biden Gives Speech

While President Joe Biden gave a commencement address (and received an honorary degree) from Morehouse College in Atlanta on Sunday, May 19, several students staged pro-Palestine protests — some turning their backs and others walking out. The students who protested cited the president's ongoing policy decisions in Israel's war on Gaza.

Before Biden took the stage for his address, Morehouse valedictorian DeAngelo Fletcher gave a rousing speech calling for an “immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza strip," and was met with applause from both the crowd and Biden, who also shook Fletcher's hand. “From the comfort of our homes, we watch an unprecedented number of civilians mourn the loss of men, women and children, while calling for the release of all hostages," Fletcher said.

The audience also included Morehouse alumni vocally supporting Biden during the ceremony, giving the president a standing ovation as he approached the stage, according to video taken from the event. Meanwhile, some graduates who wore keffiyeh scarves and Palestinian flags opted to turn their chairs away from Biden for the duration of his speech, according to the New York Times . Other graduates walked out of the ceremony as a sign of protest, though the Times notes that Biden's speech was largely uninterrupted. When he finished, attendees in the VIP section chanted, “Four more years.”

President Biden Delivers Commencement Address at Morehouse College

“I support peaceful nonviolent protest, ” Biden told students in his speech. “Your voices should be heard, and I promise you I hear them.” He also said he is "working around the clock” for an immediate ceasefire.

Young people across college campuses have protested the war with demonstrations taking place nationwide. Pro-Palestine students are demanding their schools disclose and divest from companies with financial investments or economic connections to military companies connected to Israel.

After Morehouse announced that it would welcome Biden to deliver the commencement speech this year and grant him an honorary degree from the historically Black college, current students and alumni pushed back on the Atlanta-area school, urging them to reconsider. In one open letter to Morehouse's faculty from a group with the Atlanta University Center Students for Justice in Palestine, Dr. Marlon Millner, class of 1995, asked that Morehouse “not award [an] honorary degree to someone morally complicit in a war in Gaza.”

“[Morehouse alumni Martin Luther King Jr.] challenged a historically courageous [Lyndon B. Johnson] on Vietnam after the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. That’s moral courage, not moral complicity or moral complacency,” Millner wrote. “Morehouse does produce businessmen, but let’s not fail to produce better men. Morehouse does produce politicians, but let’s not fail to produce men of principle. This is a defining moment where actions, not accolades will matter.”

The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel killed 1,200 people; since then, Israel's attacks on Gaza have killed more than 35,000 people, according to the Associated Press. The outlet reported last week that the Biden administration agreed to send another $1 billion sale of arms and ammunition to Israel.

President Biden's support in states like Georgia will be immensely important as the 2024 election approaches. The rematch between Biden and Republican candidate former President Donald Trump will shine a spotlight on Biden's handling of the war.

Student Commencement speeches to tap into themes faced by Class of 2024

Part of the commencement 2024 series.

A collection of stories covering Harvard University’s 373rd Commencement.

Three graduating students selected in a University-wide competition will deliver speeches Thursday at Tercentenary Theatre as part of the one of the oldest traditions of Commencement.

The student orators are Blake Alexander Lopez, a senior from the College who will deliver the Latin Salutatory; Shruti Kumar, also a College senior, who will deliver the Senior English Address; and Robert Clinton, J.D. ’24, a Harvard Law School graduate who will deliver the Graduate English Address.

Overcoming those 6 feet of separation

Blake Alexander Lopez Undergraduate Latin

When Lopez arrived on campus in the fall of 2020, six months into the COVID pandemic, first-year students could live in dorms, but they had to attend classes online and keep social distance as part of public health guidelines to slow the spread of the virus.

A joint classical languages and literature and linguistics concentrator with a secondary field in medieval studies, Lopez will address “that sort of nearer distance that we found ourselves within” in the Latin oration he will deliver during the Morning Exercises of Commencement.

“Being a student on campus in the fall of 2020 felt like we were in the proximity of all these things we had so long dreamed about, and yet there was an inherent separation between us,” said Lopez, a Kirkland House resident. “We were physically rather close, living in rooms next to each other and seeing each other on our computer screens because we had to stay socially distant.”

But as the pandemic eased its grip, members of the Class of 2024 returned to normal life and built closer relationships with one another. Celebrating graduation in person and together is a reason to celebrate, said Lopez.

“What I would like the audience to take away from my speech is that whatever difficulties were posed to us, we were able to meet them, adapt and exhibit a resilience that allowed us to thrive,” said Lopez. “There is so much our class has to be proud of, in view of what we faced. It is because what we faced, we faced together.”

Lopez, who fell in love with Latin in high school, saidthe language will serve him well to talk about both separation and closeness. Latin is considered a dead language because there are no native speakers. During his speech, subtitles will appear on screens in the Yard, and an English translation will be included in the program flyer.

“There’s a layer of separation between the reader of the speech’s English translation and myself delivering it in Latin,” said Lopez, who grew up in Chicago. “But being able to communicate my ideas and the feelings behind them across the linguistic boundary is reflective in a lot of ways of the fact that in spite of the barriers separating the Class of 2024 when we first arrived on campus, we were able to traverse that distance.”

At Harvard, Lopez strengthened his love of Latin and the classics. His senior thesis focused in part on ancient graffiti inscriptions found in Pompeii, which include jokes, riddles, literary quotations, and the customary “I was here.” The subject fascinates him because it provides a glimpse into the intimate relationship between Latin and the way common people made use of it.

After graduation, Lopez will pursue a master’s degree in classics at Oxford University. For now, he cherishes the fact that he was able to realize the dream he started nurturing when he was applying to Harvard.

“The fact that hundreds of years going on, we still do a Latin oration at Commencement really captivated me,” said Lopez. “I would sort of daydream about it. I’d like to go back to 17-year-old me and tell him, ‘Hey, we did it.’ Or as they’d say in Latin, ‘Vicimus.’ ”

Shruthi Kumar by the Weeks Footbridge.

The power of not knowing

Shruti Kumar Undergraduate English

Kumar’s speech explores a subject she knows all too well.

Coming to Harvard as a pre-med student, Kumar took a history of science class on health disparities in the U.S., and she had a change of heart.

By embracing uncertainty, she found her passion for public health. “I didn’t know something like history of science existed,” said Kumar, a joint history of science and economics concentrator with a secondary in human evolutionary biology. “But I fell in love with that class, and I realized that history of science was what I really wanted to study to find ways to address the world’s biggest health problems.”

A Mather House resident, Kumar is glad she took risks during her time at Harvard and challenged societal and parental expectations when she switched pre-med studies for classes on health inequities and public health issues. In hindsight, Kumar said her decision made sense. After all, she had been interested in public health since high school, when she was involved in a mental health education program for youth.

In College, Kumar started a campaign to ensure that all Harvard bathrooms supply free menstrual products. Thanks to her advocacy, 817 bathrooms across the University are fully stocked with free tampons and sanitary pads on a regular basis.

Navigating the uncertainty of choosing a new career concentration could be nerve-racking, but Kumar found strength when she decided to follow her inner voice. “You’re supposed to make money, you’re supposed to have a family, you’re supposed to do this, that, or the other,” she said. “But at the end of the day, I think we owe it to ourselves to listen to that voice inside that tells us, ‘Oh, this is what I’m passionate about.’”

Kumar is confident her message will resonate with the Class of 2024, which started their first year amid the uncertainty of the pandemic. “There is a lot you don’t know in your first year, and on top of that, there was COVID,” said Kumar, who grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. “Our class had to grapple with not knowing what was going to happen in the next few years of our College experience. … We have gone through College with this chaos, and we have developed a strength to deal with uncertainty, and that’s what makes us powerful.”

The power of not knowing can be revelatory, said Kumar. After graduation, she will work on public health entrepreneurship and after that, she plans to attend law school or pursue a Ph.D.

“We are all people walking through the world, not really knowing what’s going to happen,” Kumar said. “But the power of not knowing is about how you can turn that space of fear and anxiety into something that is empowering, uplifting, and exciting. It’s a conscious shift that you must make pretty much all the time every day.”

‘Working hard’ vs. ‘doing good’

Robert Clinton Graduate English

Growing up in Richmond, California, in an African American middle-class family, Clinton felt the call to public service early on. He is not sure where it came from, but he believes that both being the child of civil servants and being Black in the U.S. may have contributed to his commitment to the common good.

In his Commencement speech, Clinton will urge students to use their privilege and power to better the lives of fellow citizens and create a more equitable society. Privilege comes with social responsibility, he said.

“Some people who graduate from Harvard are going to be presidents or senators, but most people are going to be managers, professors, and even if they are not at the very top, they will still have a lot of power,” said Clinton. “We will be people with good jobs because we went to Harvard. And that means that we must be on the lookout for opportunities to help people.”

Harvard graduates should put their education to good use, said Clinton, who found inspiration in the work of actor and activist Harry Belafonte, who used his fame to support the Civil Rights struggle. Clinton was also stirred by the words of a Law School professor who exhorted students to find something bigger than themselves and be part of it.

“There’s a difference between working hard and doing good,”he said. “People here know how to work really hard, but working hard doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re making the world better or doing your part.”

Before coming to the Law School, Clinton worked for the city of San Francisco in the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs. But he began thinking seriously about the law when he became involved with efforts to remove a citizenship question from the 2020 U.S. Census questionnaire. A coalition of immigrant groups challenged former President Donald Trump’s administration before the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the petitioners.

“I got to see how lawyers can use the law to help people and to hold people accountable,” Clinton said. “It was really inspiring.”

After graduation, Clinton will clerk for Judge Dale Ho of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. By coincidence, Ho was the lawyer representing the immigrant groups that challenged Trump’s plan to include the citizenship question on the 2020 Census. Clinton is elated over that twist of fate.

“It was the first legal case that I followed from beginning to end,” said Clinton. “I read the briefs even though I didn’t know what they meant, I listened to the oral argument, and I was shocked when against all the odds, they won the case.

“And it just so happens that Judge Ho is going to be my first boss after law school. I joked with him in the interview that he was one of the reasons why I went to Law School. It feels like a wonderful full-circle moment.”

Biden's upcoming graduation speech roils Morehouse College, a center of Black politics and culture

President Joe Biden will have his most direct engagement with college students since the start of the Israel-Hamas war when he speaks at Morehouse College's commencement

ATLANTA -- When he gives the commencement address at Morehouse College, President Joe Biden will have his most direct engagement with college students since the start of the Israel-Hamas war at a center of Black politics and culture.

Morehouse is located in Atlanta, the largest city in the swing state of Georgia, which Biden flipped from then-President Donald Trump four years ago. Biden's speech Sunday will come as the Democrat tries to make inroads with a key and symbolic constituency — young Black men — and repair the diverse coalition that elected him to the White House.

The announcement of the speech last month triggered peaceful protests and calls for the university administration to cancel over Biden’s handling of the war between Israel and Hamas. Some students at Morehouse and other historically Black campuses in Atlanta say they vociferously oppose Biden and the decision to have him speak, mirroring the tension Biden faces in many communities of color and with young voters nationally.

Morehouse President David Thomas said in an interview that the emotions around the speech made it all the more important that Biden speak.

“In many ways, these are the moments Morehouse was born for,” he said. “We need someplace in this country that can hold the tensions that threaten to divide us. If Morehouse can’t hold those tensions, then no place can.”

The speech comes at a critical moment for Biden in his general election rematch against Trump, a Republican. Biden is lagging in support among both Black voters and people under 30, groups that were key to his narrow 2020 victories in several battleground states, including Georgia.

Fifty-five percent of Black adults approved of the way Biden is handling his job as president, according to an AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll in March, a figure far below earlier in his presidency. Overall, 32% of 18- to 29-year-olds approved in the same poll.

“This is a global catastrophe in Gaza, and Joe Biden coming to pander for our votes is political blackface,” said Morehouse sophomore Anwar Karim, who urged Thomas and school trustees to rescind Biden’s invitation.

Recent scenes on American campuses reflect objections among many young voters about Israel’s assaults in Gaza. Biden has backed Israel since Hamas militants killed more than 1,200 Israelis and took hundreds of hostages on Oct. 7. That includes weapons shipments to the longstanding U.S. ally, even as Biden advocates for a cease-fire, criticizes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s tactics and the death toll in Gaza surpasses 35,000 people, many of them women and children.

Many younger Black people have identified with the Palestinian cause and have at times drawn parallels between Israeli rule of the Palestinian territories and South Africa’s now-defunct apartheid system and abolished Jim Crow laws in the U.S. Israel rejects claims that its system of laws for Palestinians constitutes apartheid.

“I think that the president will do himself good if he does not duck that, especially when you think about the audience that he will be speaking to directly and to the nation,” Thomas said.

Sunday's speech will culminate a four-day span during which Biden will concentrate on reaching Black communities. On Thursday, Biden met privately with plaintiffs from the Brown v. Board of Education case that barred legal segregation of America’s public schools. The following day, Biden will address an NAACP gathering commemorating the 70th anniversary of the landmark decision.

Former U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, a longtime Biden ally who helped broker his speech at Morehouse, said he understood students’ concerns but emphasized that Biden has pressured Netanyahu and supports a two-state solution for the Israelis and Palestinians. Trump, meanwhile, has effectively abandoned that long-held U.S. position and said Israel should “finish the problem” in Gaza.

“That’s nowhere in the conversation,” Richmond said.

The debate over Biden's speech at Morehouse reflected a fundamental tension of historically Black colleges and universities, which are both dedicated to social justice and Black advancement and run by administrators who are committed to keeping order.

“We look like a very conservative institution” sometimes, Thomas said. “On one hand, the institution has to be the stable object where we are today in the world.”

But, he added, the university's long-term purpose is to “support our students in going out to create a better world.”

Blowback started even before Thomas publicly announced Biden was coming. Faculty sent executives a letter of concern, prompting an online town hall. Alumni gathered several hundred signatures to urge that Thomas rescind Biden’s invitation. The petition called the invitation antithetical to the pacifism Martin Luther King Jr., a Morehouse alumnus, expressed when opposing the Vietnam War.

Some students note that leaders of Morehouse and other HBCUs did not always support King and other Civil Rights activists who are venerated today. Morehouse, for instance, expelled the actor Samuel L. Jackson in 1969 after he and other students held Morehouse trustees, including King’s father, in a campus building as part of demanding curriculum changes and the appointment of more Black trustees.

Students organized two recent protests across the Atlanta University Center (AUC), a consortium of historically Black institutions in Atlanta that includes Morehouse. Chants included “Joe Biden, f— off!” and “Biden, Biden, you can’t hide. We charge you with genocide,” along with expletives directed at Thomas.

“Our institution is supporting genocide, and we turn a blind eye,” said Nyla Broddie, a student at Spelman College, which is part of the AUC. Brodie argued Biden’s Israel policy should be viewed in the broader context of U.S. foreign policy and domestic police violence against Black Americans.

Thomas said he “feels very positive about graduation” and that “not one” Morehouse senior — there are about 500 at the all-male private school — has opted out of participating. “That’s not to say that the sentiments about what’s going on in Gaza don’t resonate with people in our community,” Thomas said.

Thomas met privately with students as did several trustees. The Morehouse alumni association hosted a student town hall, featuring at least one veteran of the Atlanta Student Movement, a Civil Rights-era organization.

But there was a consistent message: Uninviting the president of the United States was not an option. When students raised questions about endowment investments in Israel and U.S. defense contractors, they said they were told the relevant amounts are negligible, a few hundred thousand dollars in mutual funds.

“I think folks are excited” about Biden coming, said Democratic Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, the senior pastor at King’s Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Warnock said Biden is in “a great position” to talk about student debt relief, increased federal support for HBCUs and other achievements.

HBCUs have not seen crackdowns from law enforcement like those at Columbia University in New York City and the University of California, Los Angeles. However, Morehouse and the AUC have seen peaceful demonstrations, petitions and private meetings among campus stakeholders. Xavier University, a historically Black university in Louisiana, withdrew its commencement invitation for U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, citing a desire among students “to enjoy a commencement ceremony free of disruptions.”

Whether Morehouse graduates or other students protest Biden or disrupt the ceremony remains to be seen. Student protest leaders say they are unaware of any plans to demonstrate inside during the commencement.

Thomas, Morehouse's president, promised that forms of protest at commencement that “do not disrupt ceremonies” will not result in sanctions for any students.

But he also vowed to end the program early if disruptions grow.

“We will not — on Morehouse’s campus — create a national media moment,” he said, “where our inability to manage these tensions leads to people being taken out of a Morehouse ceremony in zip ties by law enforcement.”

Morehouse College releases statement after President Joe Biden commencement speech

F ollowing President Joe Biden’s commencement speech Sunday morning, Morehouse College has released a statement via their social media accounts. The statement comes after some students and faculty members engaged in peaceful and silent protests and the conferring of an honorary degree for Biden.

The statement read:

“ Peaceful assembly is core to the Morehouse College social justice tradition. The Morehouse College administration fully supports and defends the right to peacefully protest and the expression of one’s views openly. Our faculty are some of the best social scholars that higher academia has to offer, and they are training up the world’s next generation of community and industry leaders who will continue our institution’s history-making legacy.

The world frequently quotes our most famous and beloved alumnus, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but the world must know that without Morehouse, there would be no Dr. King. It is fitting that a moment of organized, peaceful activism would occur on our campus while the world is watching to continue a critical conversation. We are proud of the resilient class of 2024’s unity in silent protest, showing their intentionality in strategy, communication, and coordination as a 414-person unit.

Finally, after many facilitated conversations with The White House amongst students, faculty, staff, and alumni, we are moved that President Biden chose the Morehouse stage to announce another $16 billion investment in HBCUs as well as call for an immediate and permanent cease-fire in the Israel-Gaza war. We appreciate the partnership of President Biden and The White House staff for listening and, most importantly, applying what our community and the global society have requested. The work is nowhere near finished, and Morehouse College will continue centering consequential, nuanced dialogue and critique to foster positive societal change. ”

Morehouse College President Dr. David Thomas also commended how the graduates of Morehouse handled themselves during the ceremony in his closing remarks.

“I want to congratulate you and some of you wore signs of your allegiances and feelings, but you did so in a dignified way. You did so in a way that made clear your stances, but did not reach to dehumanize or demonize. Those are the two forces that, as Morehouse men, you must stand against because they are the forces that move us away from seeing the humanity in others.”

In late April, it was announced that President Biden was invited by Morehouse to speak at the institution’s Spring Commencement. Per NBC News, Morehouse extended the invitation for President Biden to speak at their commencement in September. However, there was considerable pushback to the appearance due to the administration’s stance due to displeasure with his administration’s handling of Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Last week, the faculty of Morehouse College voted to confer President Biden with an honorary degree with a vote of 50-38.

In his remarks, Biden made several significant comments. He addressed the protests of his appearance due to his administration’s handling of Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza, calling for a ceasefire.

“In a democracy, we debate and dissent about America’s role in the world. I want to say this very clearly. I support peaceful, nonviolent protest. Your voices should be heard, and I promise you I hear them…What’s happening in Gaza and Israel is heartbreaking. Hamas’s vicious attack on Israel, killing innocent lives and holding people hostage…That’s why I’ve called for an immediate ceasefire — an immediate ceasefire to stop the fighting, bring the hostages home. And I’ve been working on a deal as we speak, working around the clock to lead an international effort to get more aid into Gaza, rebuild Gaza.

He continued, “I’m also working around the clock for more than just one ceasefire. I’m working to bring the region together. I’m working to build a lasting, durable peace. Because the question is, as you see what’s going on in Israel today: What after? What after Hamas? What happens then? What happens in Gaza? What rights do the Palestinian people have? I’m working to make sure we finally get a two-state solution — the only solution — (applause) — for two people to live in peace, security, and dignity. This is one of the hardest, most complicated problems in the world. And there’s nothing easy about it. I know it angered and frustrates many of you, including my family. But most of all, I know it breaks your heart. It breaks mine as well.”

He then tied his remarks on the ongoing conflict to a broader conversation about the importance of sound leadership.

“Leadership is about fighting through the most intractable problems. It’s about challenging anger, frustration, and heartbreak to find a solution. It’s about doing what you believe is right, even when it’s hard and lonely. You’re all future leaders, every one of you graduating today. And that’s not hyperbole. You’re future leaders, all of you. You’ll face complicated, tough moments. In these moments, you’ll listen to others, but you’ll have to decide, guided by knowledge, conviction, principle, and your own moral compass.

He further unveiled unprecedented funding for HBCUs during his tenure, the largest in history.

“And I — in addition to the original $7 billion investment in HBCUs, I’m investing 16 billion more dollars, more in our history, because you’re vital to our nation. Most HBCUs don’t have the endowments. The jobs of the future require sophisticated laboratories, sophisticated opportunity on campus. We’re opening doors so you can walk into a life of generational wealth, to be providers and leaders for your families and communities. Today, record numbers of Black Americans have jobs, health insurance, and more [wealth] than ever.”
