Good afternoon! Welcome to UCLA and congratulations!

Every one of you should be very proud. You are part of the most gifted, talented and diverse class in UCLA’s nearly 100-year history.

I’d like to share with you some stats about how truly remarkable you are:

First, with 102,000 freshman applicants and 22,000 transfer applicants, you were accepted to the most-applied-to school in the nation!

Of our 9,200 enrolled students, 7,000 are from California.

You also represent all U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and 93 other countries.

About one third are, like me, the first generation in their families to attend college. o And some of you have served in our military, or grown up in foster care, or are parents yourselves.

The diversity and perspectives you bring have made UCLA what we are: a top public university and one of the very best in the world.

UCLA is lucky to have you.

You now join a campus that’s been home to Olympians, Nobel laureates and Oscar winners.

This is a place where presidents debate, superstars perform, athletes break records and scientists save lives, where more than 40 languages are spoken on any given day and where we get to call the extraordinary, multicultural city of Los Angeles our home.

There are opportunities and benefits everywhere you look. Take advantage of all that UCLA and L.A. have to offer.

I know we were all deeply troubled this summer, by the events in Charlottesville — a place Carol and I called home for 29 years and where we raised our family.

The hatred, racism and anti-Semitism America witnessed reminds us all that intolerance and racism are continuing issues in our society. As Bruins, please strive for fairness and respectfulness in our community. You will surely encounter people on this campus with whom you strongly disagree, whether they are your fellow students, or teachers or invited speakers.

At those times, we must remember that protecting our freedom of speech and thought, means protecting others’ freedom of speech and thought. That can be uncomfortable at times, indeed frustrating at times, but remember: sometimes being uncomfortable is part of learning.

I ask that you engage over critical issues, even controversial ones, with integrity and respect. There will be several formal opportunities throughout the year to participate in discussions of important issues facing our campus and beyond.

Over the week of Oct. 16, our Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Jerry Kang, will host a series of events centered on Free Speech. I encourage you to participate.

This year’s Common Book is another opportunity. Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do is an illustrated memoir about immigration and identity in America. The Common Book is an opportunity to share and understand diverse perspectives with your peers, and to explore our roles in creating a just society.

You are destined to be our next leaders, whether it’s by conquering climate change, or erasing income inequality or curing diseases. We want you to become leaders who succeed by examining facts, who understand complexity and who work to bridge differences.

I also want to mention another challenge that needs commitment from each and every one of you — that is ending sexual violence. At UCLA, there is zero — zero — tolerance for sexual violence. Sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking are crimes against the dignity and safety of an individual, and they are totally against the values of our community. They will be treated as such. UCLA is a community built on dignity, respect and empathy. In this community, even one incident of sexual assault is too many.

I urge you to learn the Student Code of Conduct and the University of California’s Policy on Sexual Violence. o Understand what “consent” means. Know your own boundaries and respect the boundaries of others. And if you are a survivor of sexual violence or misconduct, please report it immediately to authorities on or off campus.

UCLA has many resources to assist you, no matter what concerns or problems you might have. For example, we just announced free mental health screening and treatment for all of our incoming students — a service we will soon expand to the entire campus community. So reach out to a resident assistant or anyone in Residential Life if you have concerns about anything. They are here to support you and we’ve given them the tools to do that. My administration, and our staff and faculty, are also here to support you in all of your endeavors. We want to help you make these years among the best of your lives!

Finally, remember that being a Bruin means being committed to the community beyond our campus. That’s why we’re looking forward to Volunteer Day on October 7. It’s a great way to contribute to our city, a fun way to make friends and always an inspiring way to start the year. I hope that day is but the first of many when you give back to your community.

And I hope, like many Bruins before you, you will make service a core value in your future careers. Embrace the thrill and the joy of making a difference, both locally and globally.

She herself has been a legendary Indian wrestler & Olympian. She has epitomized unfailing spirit to succeed despite all odds. Mrs. Sheila has been one of the Indian women wrestlers who have made their nation proud many a times by outstanding performances in the area mostly dominated by men.

Her valiant struggle backed by her strong determination brought her all the way where she is now. She has won 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal for India along with 2 Bronze medals in World Wrestling Championship & Asian Wrestling Championship. It is a privilege for all of us gathered here to have such a famous personality amongst us, as our esteemed guest of honor.

Beginning with a few foundation courses, our college has gone on to provide not only graduation courses, but post graduation as well as PhD courses. This is indeed quite an achievement for our college and we are also renowned for our well-equipped research centers. In fact, every year research scholars’ day is also celebrated where research scholars from different parts of the country are invited and knowledge is shared, that benefits everyone present under the same roof.

Other than academic achievements, we also cherish development in the field of sports, arts and culture. Welcome Speech by Seniors to Juniors in College

A very good evening to, Worthy Vice chancellor, Respected Dean of department, Chairmen, Teachers, and our juniors. I am _________ from ___________. I would like to say a warm word of welcome to all of you as we are going to celebrate welcome party for freshers.

Tonight is an exceptional evening with the glimpse of joys, laughs, and happiness. It is not the day when we wear casuals, sit quietly, and listen to teachers. No!! It’s the day newcomers were waiting for, it’s the day for seniors who were waiting to welcome their juniors. Yes, it is the day when teachers stand by students, and cute clicks are captured. It’s the moment when beautiful memories of the first event of an institute are attended by freshers.

Tonight excitement is at its peak, where all are together, and are amused to see each other. I am glad to see that many of you are able to join us, and who are not present here, they are going to miss it. Tonight is all about celebrations. Let’s capture some magical moments, create happy memories, and surround ourselves with laughter, and friendship. Don’t be a stranger to anyone anymore.

I often think about the time, the time which comes to everyone. Yes! It is ‘Where I will go after my college? Many of us do not know what to do, and where to go. In which institute we will be able to get further education? What kind of people will be there? What sort of faculty will be available? If I talk about myself I always thought that May I be able to make friends? These are some questions which arise in the mind of most students. But what when we are here? You are inside the institute where you are going to study for a long period of time. From where you are going to be graduates, from where you are going to get your degree.

Juniors! You are here now as three years back we were! You can get to know about all the skills required in reaching your goal takes commitment, and determination, and I would like to welcome you all to take up that challenge in the long journey of learning. You will take esteemed lectures here about which you will be privy too. Here the journey begins of your career, your future, and your life.

It was my pleasure to be here, and share my views. I on behalf of our _________ (department) want to officially welcome junior batch of ______ (year) in ________ (university/college name) family. From now on wards you guys are a part of us.

Welcome speech for annual function.

Greetings to one and all present here! I am extremely privileged to have this opportunity to address you all at this important moment for celebrating our 23rd Annual Day today. It is an honor for me to deliver my welcome speech for  annual function. Today’s children are the future of our state as well as our country. Brilliant faces that I am witnessing today, receiving awards and exhibiting their talents will grow up and definitely will be the citizens of our beloved nation tomorrow. They may grow up to achieve great success, name, and fame as well as high human values. But on the other hand, we wish them to be good human beings also and make this world a better place to live in.

I am feeling proud in saying that the talent they have displayed here today is sufficient to say that they have the potential to become worthy citizens of our society. Education is about far more than what happens within the four walls of a classroom.

Undoubtedly we are very fortunate to have such teachers, trainers, and instructors who recognize this. If this infrastructure and teachers are the two resources available to the school, then definitely, we the students are the third ones. Really, one of the joys of teaching is to draw that creative, academic and sporting potential out of the students.

We all are gathered here on this Annual Day to motivate and inspire the young minds to showcase their talents. This is a highly important occasion for everyone. It is because of that apart from the fact that this celebration highlights our school’s continuous success in the area of education. And, this platform is also an opportunity to welcome our Chief Guest of today’s evening.

Welcoming Chief Guest

On behalf of this institution, I cordially and respectfully welcome our chief guest Mr. XYZ, who is a renowned social activist and serving as the active social worker and fighting the people in actual need. We are grateful from the bottom of our heart to him for courteously and gladly accepting our invitation for becoming the chief guest of this occasion today.

Our chief guest doesn’t need any formal introduction as he is a well-known and distinguished figure in society. He is been highly respected and known for his kind deeds and selfless services for the society social service field. He has ties with many Non-Government Organizations which are arranged for free medicines and equipment for the needy people.

We are all aware of his impeccable behaviors which have changed the lives of many. It’s really an honor to have him today as the chief guest or our annual day.

Convocation 2024: Celebrating and Welcoming New Students (Video)

While new students have spent the last several days moving into residence halls and getting settled, New Student Convocation marked their official welcome to the Syracuse University community and their very first time gathering as a class.

During the annual tradition, which takes place in the JMA Wireless Dome, the academic program includes leadership and faculty processing with full regalia.

The just over 4,000 new and transfer students hail from 49 states, including Washington, D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; 20 Indigenous nations and 59 countries. University leaders and student speakers imparted advice, words of wisdom and posed thoughtful questions to the new students, embarking on this new journey.

Wisdom From an Upperclass Student

“Live it up; be in the moment. It’s okay to fail, I encourage it; it’s a learning point,” said Alie Savane ’25, a biology major in the College of Arts and Sciences and the student speaker in his words of advice to new students.

Savane was candid about some of his struggles during his second year as a student but leaned on his connections with upperclass students and alumni. “I learned that my worth wasn’t tied to only my grades but to the effort that I put out every day. Even counting those days of rest, give yourself grace, one’s recovery is still effort,” he said.

“Growth is fundamental to this experience, and there’s a community here dedicated to fostering it. The Orange community makes this campus shine bright even on its cloudiest days, which is great because winters can be a bit cloudy,” said Savane.

Requests From the Chancellor

After addressing the loved ones of the students, Chancellor Kent Syverud made two requests of the new students.

The first: come as you are. “If you have not figured it out yet, you will figure it out pretty soon: there is no one way of thinking, no one way of dressing, no one person who is the ‘normal’ here at Syracuse University. People here are unique and amazing and dazzlingly different. So given that there is no ‘normal’ here, why not try just being yourself here. Not the image of perfection that appears on social media, not the identical replica of someone else, just be you. I believe you will find that if you come as you are here, you will become Orange.”

The second piece of advice from the Chancellor: Become more at Syracuse. “That’s the common thread in all the speeches you are hearing this week. You have a chance that has been denied to so many people in this world: a chance to be part of a great university. So, take it. Please become more here, in your own unique and defining way. That’s what so many people have done before you, and you can too.”

Showing Grace to Others

“Every one of you have earned your place here and every one of you deserves to be here,” said Allen Groves, senior vice president and chief student experience officer, sharing how almost 45,000 individuals applied to be part of the new first-year class and 1,500 applied to be transfer students.

“While you’re here I want you to make sure you explore fearlessly new ideas, new ways of thinking and expose yourself to people whose views may be different than your own,” said Groves. “I hope you’ll debate big, contentious issues and ideas respectfully, listening as much as speaking—and sometimes that’s hard—and being mindful of our goal of being a place of academic excellence in a university that is welcoming to all.”

“As you begin to navigate campus and figure out your own routine and favored spaces, I sincerely hope you will be willing to extend a hand to a classmate who may be struggling, and to show grace when a peer makes a mistake. That peer could just as easily be you, and we could all use a little more grace in this world.”

Seizing Possibilities

“Today you’re surrounded by your fellow new students, most or all of them strangers to you now. And yet many of them will become lifelong friends. Hard as it may be to imagine, you and the people who surround you now will gather again in this dome in four years to celebrate Commencement,” said Lois Agnew, interim vice chancellor, provost and chief academic officer. “Between that day and this celebratory moment, there is possibility—the possibility of who you will be as a student at Syracuse, and the possibility of who you will become in the years that follow your time here.”

Agnew shared there are many ways for students to seize that possibility, noting research, creative inquiry, studying beyond campus through study away and study abroad programs, experiential learning and intellectual bravery as prime examples.

“Challenge yourself. Be brave and be curious. Go outside your comfort zone and explore new things. You may discover passions you did not know you had,’” Agnew said.

Before the conclusion of the program, the newest students to enter Syracuse University recited the charge and sang the alma mater. The next time they will all be together in the JMA Dome will be for their Commencement in May 2028.

Convocation Ceremony Welcomes Newest Billikens to SLU

A day after arriving on campus, the newest group of Billikens took part in their official welcome to Saint Louis University. 

The 2024 New Student Convocation and Family Welcome ceremony took place Saturday morning. The ceremony is designed to be one of the first opportunities for the new class of Billikens to develop a sense of cohesion and identity. Members of the SLU community shared how they serve a higher purpose and seek the greater good. 

The location of the event was symbolic — Convocation marks the beginning of students’ time at SLU, while Commencement signifies the end of the journey. Both ceremonies take place inside Chaifetz Arena. 

Provost Mike Lewis, Ph.D., opened the ceremony by welcoming new students and said the University was excited to have the Class of 2028 at SLU. He shared that SLU’s goal is to have students ready to change the world when they leave the University.

“You didn’t spend your time in high school so that you could go to university and, four years from now, go out into the world and work on problems that have already been solved,” Lewis said. “We will push you to use the knowledge that you have learned here to solve the problems that have not yet been solved. God has endowed you with talent and this world has great challenges, and our goal is to develop you to where you use your talents to meet the world’s great challenges.”

Student Government Association President Reueline Arulanandan welcomed her new classmates. The SLU senior reflected on her start at SLU and shared a message to new Billikens that the start of college can be a time of questioning and doubt. 

“If you had told me three years ago when I was sitting in your exact seats that I would get to be the student welcoming you here today, I probably would have laughed in your face,” she said. “When I first arrived at Saint Louis University, I was wildly unsure of my decision to come here, unsure of what in the world a Billiken was, unsure of what a provost was — no offense, Provost Lewis — and really unsure how SLU was going to accept me, doubts and all. If you resonate with any of that, I promise you are not the only one.”

Over time, Arulanandan said those feelings faded and predicted they would for her classmates, as well.

“Trust me when I say it is only by the grace of God, with the help of a lot of the people here, that I am here today,” she said. “So this morning, I invite you to stay with me for just a moment while I tell you why, no matter how you feel right now, I truly believe that you are meant to be here at this very moment, with these very people.”

Arulanandan shared some of the obstacles and challenges that marked her journey’s rocky start. Her outlook was changed when a friend suggested that instead of thinking “everything happens for a reason,” to consider that “nothing is wasted.”

“At the time, after that devastating test score, and eventually changing programs completely, a lot of my time, my energy, my lack of sleep felt wasted,” she said. “But now, looking back, I am so, so glad that 17-year-old Reueline experienced some failure. It gave me a chance, perhaps out of necessity, to ask to lean on my friends and family, to explore my real academic interests, not just what I thought I should do with my life or with my time. This time is precious. So hear me when I say that those times when that class seems unreasonably hard and your eyes are burning studying into the night, nothing is wasted.”

Arulanandan encouraged the new Billikens to get involved, make friends, and experience SLU and St. Louis as a whole. She encouraged them not to waste time while at SLU. 

“Here at SLU, we are here for you,” she said. “This is not wasted time. You are supposed to be here.”

While Arulanandan offered advice as a fellow student and relative newcomer to SLU, Kim Levenhagen, DPT, professor of physical therapy and athletic training at the Doisy College of Health Sciences, provided some guidance from someone who has spent decades at the University.

Levenhagen started her career at Saint Louis University 40 years ago as a student and now serves as a professor.  

“I came to Saint Louis University to start a new chapter, ready to take on the world,” she said. “Like many of you, I had no idea what a Billiken was or how the Jesuit mission would transform me into the person I am today. I started my journey at SLU with some rough and misshapen tools, but it was the opportunities and people I have met along the way that have helped me to transform and develop my tools for a successful start to each academic year.”

Levenhagen shared three “tools” for success. She encouraged the students to develop and refine their academic tools, relationship tools and self-care tools. 

“Allow yourself to be vulnerable,” Levenhagen said. “Explore your values, embrace your strengths, develop the courage to face your fears and build your support system.”

Levenhagen closed her remarks by speaking for the entire SLU faculty. 

“I once again welcome you as you begin your academic journey here at SLU,” Levenhagen said. “I welcome you to our community, and I cannot wait to see where your Billiken journey takes you.” 

SLU President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D., closed out the ceremony with his remarks. Pestello, who announced this spring that this would be his last year at SLU, was greeted with a standing ovation. 

“We are gathered here to mark this moment where you join our community,” he said. “This morning, you become Billikens. … We believe that every one of you has everything it takes to be successful here. We are proud to have each and every one of you as a member of this community.”

Pestello encouraged students to consider  SLU’s unique mascot, the Billiken. He described it as a symbol of the way things ought to be. He then encouraged the new students to claim their status as Billikens loudly. 

Pestello reminded students that their time at SLU is relatively short and students need to make the most of it.

“You are going to be with us for three years and nine months as undergraduate students,” Pestello said. “In three years and nine months, almost to the day, you will be joining us here on the floor for commencement exercises. So the question is, how will you spend that time?”

Pestello shared some lessons he’s learned in his life in education. He said that in his talks with alumni from every university, he’s heard a few common themes. There’s never regret over not skipping enough classes, but instead, alumni have regret over not taking things seriously, not learning more, and not embracing college. 

“I encourage you to get involved,” he said. “This is an opportunity to grow, to follow your passions. It’s also an opportunity to take advantage of all those people who are here to help you. Our professional staff is keenly interested in your development and helping you grow and be successful.”

UNI welcomes new students at Panther Welcome kickoff

Nearly 1,400 new UNI students packed the student section of the McLeod Center for the Panther Welcome kickoff event on Wednesday evening. Additional members of the UNI community were on hand to officially welcome the incoming Panthers to their new home.

In a lively, sports-like atmosphere, attendees learned the UNI Fight Song with the Panther Marching Band, UNI Cheerleading, Dance Team, and everyone's favorite mascots TC and TK. Following a warm welcome from President Mark Nook and UNI soccer coach Bruce Erickson, students cheered on their new classmates in a tricycle race with teams anchored by President Nook and his wife Cheryl. They also celebrated one of UNI's favorite traditions by learning how to dance to "The Interlude" before gathering for a class photo.

The Panther Welcome kickoff event was followed by a tailgate-style meal on the concourse between the UNI-Dome and McLeod Center before students enjoyed activities in the Wellness and Recreation Center that were part of Panther Palooza.

US colleges revise rules on free speech in hopes of containing anti-war demonstrations

NEW YORK (AP) — As students return to colleges across the United States, administrators are bracing for a resurgence in activism against the war in Gaza, and some schools are adopting rules to limit the kind of protests that swept campuses last spring.

While the summer break provided a respite in student demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war, it also gave both student protesters and higher education officials a chance to regroup and strategize for the fall semester.

The stakes remain high. At Columbia University, President Minouche Shafik resigned Wednesday after coming under heavy scrutiny for her handling of the demonstrations at the campus in New York City, where the wave of pro-Palestinian tent encampments began last spring.

Some of the new rules imposed by universities include banning encampments, limiting the duration of demonstrations, allowing protests only in designated spaces and restricting campus access to those with university identification. Critics say some of the measures will curtail free speech.

The American Association of University Professors issued a statement Wednesday condemning “overly restrictive policies” that could discourage free expression. Many of the new policies require protesters to register well in advance and strictly limit the locations where gatherings can be held, as well as setting new limits on the use of amplified sound and signage.

“Our colleges and universities should encourage, not suppress, open and vigorous dialogue and debate even on the most deeply held beliefs,” said the statement, adding that many policies were imposed without faculty input.

The University of Pennsylvania has outlined new “temporary guidelines” for student protests that include bans on encampments, overnight demonstrations, and the use of bullhorns and speakers until after 5 p.m. on class days. Penn also requires that posters and banners be removed within two weeks of going up. The university says it remains committed to freedom of speech and lawful assembly.

At Indiana University, protests after 11 p.m. are forbidden under a new “expressive activities policy” that took effect Aug 1. The policy says “camping” and erecting any type of shelter are prohibited on campus, and signs cannot be displayed on university property without prior approval.

The University of South Florida now requires approval for tents, canopies, banners, signs and amplifiers. The school’s “speech, expression and assembly” rules stipulate that no “activity,” including protests or demonstrations, is allowed after 5 p.m. on weekdays or during weekends and not allowed at all during the last two weeks of a semester.

A draft document obtained over the summer by the student newspaper at Harvard University showed the college was considering prohibitions on overnight camping, chalk messages and unapproved signs.

“I think right now we are seeing a resurgence of repression on campuses that we haven’t seen since the late 1960s,” said Risa Lieberwitz, a Cornell University professor of labor and employment law who serves as general counsel for the AAUP.

Universities say they encourage free speech as long as it doesn’t interfere with learning, and they insist they are simply updating existing rules for demonstrations to protect campus safety.

Tensions have run high on college campuses since Oct. 7, when Hamas militants assaulted southern Israel and killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took about 250 hostages.

Many student protesters in the U.S. vow to continue their activism, which has been fueled by Gaza’s rising death toll, which surpassed 40,000 on Thursday, according to the territory’s Health Ministry.

About 50 Columbia students still face discipline over last spring’s demonstrations after a mediation process that began earlier in the summer stalled, according to Mahmoud Khalil, a lead negotiator working on behalf of Columbia student protesters. He blamed the impasse on Columbia administrators.

“The university loves to appear that they’re in dialogue with the students. But these are all fake steps meant to assure the donor community and their political class,” said Khalil, a graduate student at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs.

The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

The Ivy League school in upper Manhattan was roiled earlier this year by student demonstrations, culminating in scenes of police officers with zip ties and riot shields storming a building occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters.

Similar protests swept college campuses nationwide, with many leading to violent clashes with police and more than 3,000 arrests. Many of the students who were arrested during police crackdowns have had their charges dismissed , but some are still waiting to learn what prosecutors decide. Many have faced fallout in their academic careers, including suspensions, withheld diplomas and other forms of discipline.

Shafik was among the university leaders who were called for questioning before Congress. She was heavily criticized by Republicans who accused her of not doing enough to combat concerns about antisemitism on the Columbia campus.

She announced her resignation in an emailed letter to the university community just weeks before the start of classes on Sept. 3. The university on Monday began restricting campus access to people with Columbia IDs and registered guests, saying it wanted to curb “potential disruptions” as the new semester draws near.

“This period has taken a considerable toll on my family, as it has for others in the community,” Shafik wrote in her letter. “Over the summer, I have been able to reflect and have decided that my moving on at this point would best enable Columbia to traverse the challenges ahead.”

Pro-Palestinian protesters first set up tent encampments on Columbia’s campus during Shafik’s congressional testimony in mid-April, when she denounced antisemitism but faced criticism for how she responded to faculty and students accused of bias.

The school sent in police to clear the tents the following day, only for the students to return and inspire a wave of similar protests at campuses across the country as students called for schools to cut financial ties with Israel and companies supporting the war.

The campus was mostly quiet this summer, but a conservative news outlet in June published images of what it said were text messages exchanged by administrators while attending a May 31 panel discussion titled “Jewish Life on Campus: Past, Present and Future.”

The officials were removed from their posts , with Shafik saying in a July 8 letter to the school community that the messages were unprofessional and “disturbingly touched on ancient antisemitic tropes.”

Other prominent Ivy League leaders have stepped down in recent months , in large part due to their response to the volatile protests on campus.

University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill resigned in December after less than two years on the job. She faced pressure from donors and criticism over testimony at a congressional hearing where she was unable to say under repeated questioning that calls on campus for the genocide of Jews would violate the school’s conduct policy.

And in January, Harvard University President Claudine Gay resigned amid plagiarism accusations and similar criticism over her testimony before Congress.

New Students and Families Enjoy Food and Fun Before Farewells

Davidson College prides itself on gatherings that involve delicious treats (look for Cake Race coverage next week); and new students and their families experienced that Thursday.

Another beautiful North Carolina day served as the backdrop for a picnic lunch on the Chambers lawn. 

Students and families socialized with other newcomers and lifelong friendships began.

Later, President Doug Hicks hosted everyone in his back yard for a sweet farewell gathering—of the cookie and cupcake variety—before students settled in and families returned home.

New Students Receive an Olympic Welcome

Evy Leibfarth ’25 is the first Davidson student to win an Olympic medal.

Davidson always goes big welcoming new students, but this year’s efforts were truly Olympian.

As dance music blared, orientation team leaders formed the traditional human tunnel to cheer and high-five new students and their families as they headed into the Baker Sports Complex Wednesday night.

President Doug Hicks and college leaders spoke briefly about the Davidson experience, and reassured students and families that they belong in this close-knit community. 

The crowd cheered when he introduced another member of the college community, Evy Leibfarth ’25, the first Davidson student to win an Olympic medal. She earned a bronze in the women’s canoe slalom single final. (During the last summer Olympics in Tokyo, she entered the history books as the youngest U.S. athlete ever in canoe slalom.)

Earlier in the week, Leibfarth surprised the faculty and staff during their Olympic-themed “Opening Ceremony” for the new school year.

“Davidson College is really special because of y’all,” she said. “Everyone has a lot of love for the town and the college. I’m proud to go here…I love being here.”

Davidson College Handles Move-In With Care

The rites of late summer returned to Davidson College on Wednesday as new students and their families descended on campus for move-in day.

Their families pulled up their cars, trucks and vans to find helpers greeting them with cheers, music and signs.

“Happy Move-In Day!” one sparkly handwritten poster said, as another emphasized, “We’re so excited you’re here.”

College staffers, orientation team members and other returning students, including scholar athletes and their coaches, unloaded the vehicles and carried the stuff of modern residence hall life up flights of stairs and into rooms.

They toted lacrosse sticks, musical instruments and headboards; laundry baskets crammed with sheets and towels; and big plastic boxes filled with detergent, disinfectant wipes (moms insisted) — and toiletries.

President Doug Hicks ’90 took an early shift, chatting with students and families as he carried their things to their new college home. Cheer team members became adept at gracefully balancing mini refrigerators through stairwells. 

License plates represented a diverse American geography, from New York to Florida; Louisiana to Illinois; North Carolina to Ohio. That’s in addition to students whose journeys included airplanes coming from the furthest points of the United States and around the world.

 The Griffin family drove 11 ½ hours from Bethalto, Illinois, to bring Brice ’28 to Davidson, where he’s a member of the wrestling team. Jill Griffin, his mom, marveled at the number of volunteers making the move-in easy and them feel welcome.

 “This has been a great experience. It’s such a beautiful campus and everyone has been so kind,” she said. “I love Davidson. I’m so excited for him — but sad for me — he’s our first and I’m going to miss him.”

A crisp, sunny morning offered a rare respite from the more typical heat and humidity of a North Carolina summer. Students and staff volunteers recalled much more trying weather in years past, and shared memories of their own move-in days. 

Movers included several men’s basketball coaches and Athletics Director Chris Clunie ’06, who are all Davidson alumni.

“It was just my parents and me making multiple trips up and down the stairs of Richardson,” said Matt Williams ’16, a former player and now an assistant coach. “This is so much better.”

 Jack Gibbs ’17, another player-turned-assistant coach, remembered his parents dropping him off, and his mom crying.

 “That was hard,” Gibbs said, “But it was so exciting to be here getting ready to start my college career.”

And Will Reigel ’12, a third former player-turned-coach, had assistance from a host of upper-class members who became his teammates, including NBA legend Stephen Curry ’10.

It was in 2008, the semester after Curry led the men’s basketball team to the Elite Eight and began his journey into superstardom, Reigel said, “but there he was, helping with the move-in.”

Clunie, who also played basketball at Davidson, kept a rapid unloading, lifting and carrying pace on Wednesday and recalled a much different experience during his move-in day.

“It wasn’t nearly as organized,” he said. “It’s a machine now.”

Helping to make it that way was Lyric Bailey ’26, a cheer team member who greeted the newcomers enthusiastically. It’s her second time as a move-in helper.

 “It feels like summer camp, to cheer for people and welcome them as they get here,” she said. “I want to make it a positive experience for them. I love being able to do that.”

Story content, president wood and faculty welcome 2,500 incoming students and their loved ones during convocation.

President Luke Wood, faculty and staff formally welcomed more than 2,500 incoming Hornets and their loved ones to campus during New Student and Family Convocation on Aug. 22, marking the start of their academic journeys at Sacramento State.

“You did it. You made it,” Wood said. “Whether you came here as a transfer student from a community college, or are a beginning graduate student, or you just graduated from high school or took any other pathway to get here, we are proud of you.”

All newly admitted first-year, transfer and graduate students were invited to attend with their families and supporters. Students, family members and supporters packed the University Union Ballroom during two back-to-back ceremonies.

This was the second year the University has held Convocation for new students, a rite of passage symbolizing the beginning of their academic careers much the way Commencement marks the completion.

The ceremony opened with a procession of University administrators and deans dressed in their formal academic regalia. Later, each dean formally recognized the new students entering their academic colleges.

“A little over 20 years ago, I began my journey here as a student at Sacramento State,” said Wood, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University. “I owe much of the foundation of my life and my work to Sacramento State.”

Wood rallied students and families to participate in a call and response as the ballroom chanted “Our Hive. Our Home.”

“This University belongs to you. You are not a guest. As of this moment, this is your hive. This is your home,” he said.

He also urged students to get involved in campus activities.

“Half of what you learn at Sacramento State occurs inside the classroom, but the other half occurs outside of the classroom, and that means getting involved with clubs, organizations, Greek life and student leadership, internships and community engagement,” he said.

Students were given “Hornet for Life” enamel pins, which their loved ones affixed to their lapels. They, in turn, gave their supporters pins that read “Hornet Family.”

Jaytika Faridian brought her toddler daughter to Convocation to show her the importance of getting a college education. Faridian, who said she has a good job working at UC Davis, has an associate’s degree and decided to go back to school to set a good example for her daughter.

“I came here tonight for inspiration,” Faridian said. “I’m going to be doing a lot of my classes online, so I thought this would be a nice event to come to. It’s been years since I’ve been in a traditional college setting.”

For some families, Convocation served as a homecoming. Sacramento State alumni Cornell and Judy Yip drove to campus from Elk Grove as soon as they got off work to attend the ceremony with their daughter, Kendra, a Civil Engineering transfer student from Cosumnes River College.

“We both attended Sac State many years ago, and it’s changed so much,” Cornell Yip said. “Just walking from the parking structure to here, we can see big changes. I don’t even remember this ballroom.”

Kendra Yip, 19, said she wanted to find out more about University clubs and activities.

“I just wanted to get to know the school and what it has to offer,” she said. “I’m excited about starting classes on Monday, but I’m a little nervous, too. I’m trying to figure out my classes before I join anything because I don’t want to impact my schedule too much.”

Vice President for Student Affairs Aniesha Mitchell told the audience that the word “convocation” is Latin for coming together.

“It’s only fitting that on this day, we call together the faculty, staff and students to formally welcome and embrace you as the newest members to the Hornet family,” Mitchell said. “Everyone here today is committed to your success.”

Wood left students with a final piece of advice.

“Consider how you want to change the world,” he said. “I ask you to consider what is your purpose in this world? What is your calling?

“It’s not just about a degree, or your goals to become a scientist or business leader or artist or community leader. It’s about what you will do once you are empowered with that title to change the world.”
