Global Employability University Rankings 2023

Employers are increasingly looking for university graduates that can demonstrate social impact and leadership skills the Global Employability University Ranking and Survey (GEURS) 2023-24 reveals.

The GEURS, produced by data collected by French consultancy Emerging and published with Times Higher Education (THE), shows employers want graduates that will be more involved in society, can transform organisations and thereby grow their country’s economy. These qualities are particularly sought from graduates from BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries and also appears as top five requirements for all countries in the survey, and also those studying business, engineering and IT.

The data shows employers are also looking for graduates with digital skills and studying STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects. This is evident in the ranking with the first two positions taken up by tech schools: California Institute of Technology (Caltech), which tops the table, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in second. In addition, 40% of the top 50 positions are taken up by tech schools too.

The ability to work in a team, as well as a cooperative spirit, are highly prized by employers in all countries, which are skills consistent with the collaborative and socially engaged mindset linked to the social impact and leadership skill.

GEURS assesses the employability performance of higher education institutions and is the only ranking and survey to reveal the world’s top 250 universities for producing employable graduates based on employers’ assessment, knowledge and expectations. For this new edition, 100,700 votes were canvassed from 11,560 operational and international managers in 21 countries.

The survey shows, yet again, the increasing globalisation of higher education employability, which is most noticeable when looking at the changes over the past 10 years with US and UK universities making up more than 58% of universities in 2013 whereas, this year, they represent just 27.5%.

Asia has 49 institutions in the top 250, five more than last year which represents the largest continental increase with China and India being the only countries to show real progress in the rankings.

Chinese universities are continuing to climb up and consolidate their position in the top echelons of the ranking with Peking University knocking on the door of a top 10 place (14 th ) and Tsinghua University (21st) also in the top 30.

Indian universities, which were under-represented given the country’s size and population, are now making steady progress and the increase in the number of votes they received this year is significant.

Universities from Asia that dropped down due to the pandemic are recovering this year and are climbing back up the table which is most evident in Hong Kong, as well as Japan.

America’s Ivy League universities are still considered the best in the world and in addition US universities specialising in digital and STEM subjects, such as Arizona State University and Florida Institute of Technology are doing well too. However, overall the country’s universities are continuing to lose ground, as they have for the last five years, to the rest of the world.

Sandrine Belloc, Emerging Group's Managing Partner, commented:

“The data behind the ranking provides some absolutely fascinating nuggets about the shifting sands in global higher education regarding graduates’ employability.

“Most notable this year are the significant improvements in higher education employability in India, which we should look out for over the upcoming years as all indicators show it improving at a rapid rate.

“The data also indicates Chinese universities are set to increase their presence even further, with at least one university reaching the top 10 in the next few years.

“The panorama of US universities in the ranking has changed considerably over the last 10 years on the topic of employability but the number and quality of US universities is still high and every year we can observe the ability of some universities to bounce back spectacularly.

“In Europe, I’d like to draw attention on the number of votes cast for German universities which places Germany in third place, replacing the UK, whose higher education has seen a marked decline since Brexit.

“And I also suggest keeping a close look at Spanish higher education, with a growing number of world-class institutions in the ranking. ”

US and UK institutions take up 12 of the top 20 places and other elite universities have maintained their positions with notable performances from the University of Tokyo at 7 th the University of Toronto (12 th ), Technical University of Munich (13 th ) and ETH Zurich (15 th ).

Universities that experienced significant improvements in the ranking include University of Chicago which moved up 41 places to 49 th , Zhejiang University which moved up 24 places to 88 th , Dartmouth College which moved up 14 places to 60 th and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay which moved up 10 places to 62 nd .

Universities from the Middle East North Africa region  have gone from having no representatives in 2011 to steadily expanding to 12 and are consolidating their position in the ranking this year.

Seeta Bhardwa, Editor, THE Student, said:

“The research shows the key skills employers are increasingly looking for and this year it’s fascinating to see social impact and leadership is the key skill they’re looking for. It shows how employers want graduates that can make a significant contribution not only to their company but also to the wider community and the country too.”

There are 19 new entrants this year compared with last year - a symbol of higher education’s dynamism.

NUS graduates ranked 8th most employable worldwide

Commencement_2022

NUS graduates were ranked the eighth most employable in the world by recruiters, rising up one notch from last year, according to the 2022-2023 Global Employability University Ranking and Survey results.

NUS also retained its position among the top two in Asia – behind only the University of Tokyo at seventh place – and maintained its spot as the only Singapore university in the top 10. This is the third year in a row that NUS has emerged in the top 10 of the ranking.

Produced by the Paris-based HR consultancy Emerging and published by Times Higher Education, the ranking lists the top 250 universities according to graduate employability based on the views of international recruiters . The universities were assessed on six key drivers identified by businesses as the main contributors to creating employable graduates: academic excellence, internationality, digital performance, focus on work expertise, graduate skills and specialisation.

“We are delighted that NUS graduates across diverse fields have been recognised as eighth in the world by employers in Singapore and globally. It is a testament to the talented students we receive at NUS, and the quality of our professors and programmes,” said an NUS spokesperson.

“With global turmoil and a tightening job situation in the time ahead, the University will strive to ensure that our graduates continue to be grounded in broad-based, interdisciplinary, and lifelong learning, to help them stand out and thrive in a constantly evolving workplace.”   Ms Sandrine Belloc, Emerging’s Managing Partner, called NUS’ results in this year’s list an “incredible performance”. She noted that the University had swiftly risen up in the ranking over the past decade, moving from 49 th place in 2013 to ninth just seven years later in 2020. She added that the University had been rated particularly well in internationality, which considers a university’s international reputation, its international staff and curriculum, and share of international students .

GEURS TABLE-04

Now in its 12 th year, the survey gathered 98,014 votes from participating employers worldwide on which universities taught the key skills that students need to thrive in the workplace. Employers who took part provided around 800,000 graduate jobs or placements in 2022-2023 in total. Respondents of the survey were corporate managers from 24 countries who recruited and/or supervised more than five graduates a year.

Findings from this year’s results showed that digital skills – measured under the graduate skills component – have become the most important factor to employers since the COVID-19 pandemic. The two other key employability drivers regarded as important by recruiters were subject specialisation and work expertise.

“Today, 92 per cent of respondents to the survey believe universities should do more to increase digital skills. Digital skills are not the exclusive concern anymore of computer science faculties and their students, any university digital plan needs a transversal approach that includes all stakeholders,” said Ms Belloc in a press release.

Staying ahead with relevant skills

To equip students with the relevant skills to stay ahead in an increasingly digitalised world that has transformed the work environment, NUS had enhanced its General Education curriculum for students admitted from AY2021-22 to include both Data Literacy and Digital Literacy as part of its six key pillars of knowledge under the curriculum.

In recognition of the importance of a holistic education, the University also offers students global exposure through study-abroad programmes with over 300 partner universities in more than 40 countries. Students can also gain valuable real-world experience through internships at start-ups in entrepreneurial hotspots around the world under the NUS Overseas Colleges programme. As part of the NUS Centre for Future-ready Graduates (NUS CFG) Global Industry Insights programme , students can explore emerging and growth trends across industries by heading overseas to places like Thailand and Indonesia to learn about regional businesses and engage with industry professionals.

To boost the future readiness of NUS students and graduates, the University launched two new digital platforms – the Internship-As-A-Service (IAAS) and conNectUS in January this year. Led by NUS CFG and NUS Enterprise , IAAS is a platform that enables students to take on curated short-stint projects of flexible duration with local and overseas companies whether during the semester or vacations, with all projects recognised as internships. Meanwhile, conNectUS is the University’s professional networking platform allowing NUS students and alumni to connect, exchange career insights and tap into the hidden job market.

NUS CFG also holds career fairs to provide students engagement opportunities with industry players across diverse sectors. Other than large-scale signature fairs like the NUS Career Fest , Internship Day , and Postgraduate Career Fair, this includes the inaugural College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) Navigator and College of Design and Engineering (CDE) Career Fair, both the result of close collaboration with each college.

U of T grads among the most employable in the world: Times Higher Education

""

Published: November 25, 2020

The University of Toronto ranked eighth in the world for the employability of its graduates in the latest Times Higher Education Global University Employability Ranking .

That’s up seven spots from last year.

Among public universities, U of T’s performance was even more impressive. It ranked first in North America and fourth globally in the eyes of international recruiters, who were surveyed for their views on which universities are best at preparing students for the workplace.

U of T continues to be the top-ranked school in Canada for employability, according to the 2020 survey – a position it has held for the past eight years.

“This is terrific news for our recent graduates and current students, who have demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of a global pandemic and a rapidly changing job market,” said U of T President Meric Gertler .

“We strive to foster a global outlook in our students, with an emphasis on excellence in scholarship, innovation, equity and sustainability – all areas in high demand by employers in Canada and around the world.”

The Global University Employability Ranking 2020 is based on the responses of 8,820 recruiters and managers at international companies in 22 countries who hire university graduates. Most recruiters were based in the Asia-Pacific region (37.1 per cent), followed by Europe and Central Asia (33.6 per cent), the Americas (20.8 per cent) and the Middle East and Africa (8.5 per cent).

Each participant was asked to rank universities in response to the following question: “As a person dealing with international graduates, which universities are in your opinion the best in the world when it comes to graduate employability?”

The ranking is designed by the Paris-based HR consultancy Emerging while the polling is done by independent research agency Trendence.

U of T has placed among the world’s top 15 schools in the Times Higher Education employability rankings since 2013.

The three highest-ranked universities in this year’s list are based in the United States: the California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

Canadian universities were well represented in the ranking with four others in the top 100: McGill University (23rd), the University of British Columbia (28th), Université de Montréal/HEC (41 st ) and McMaster University (77th).

Universities in France, Germany, China and Japan also fared well in the ranking.

Ted Sargent , U of T’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives, said the university's research strength across the academic spectrum – from arts and humanities to science, technology, engineering and medicine – and its booming startup scene are among the factors that set U of T apart when it comes to the employability of its graduates.

“U of T scholars have a long and impressive track record of developing solutions to the world’s most pressing problems,” he said. “This year, for example, they have risen to the challenge of COVID-19, making significant contributions to advancements in testing, treatments and vaccine development.”

What’s more, Sargent added, U of T students and researchers are taking advantage of the university’s expansive innovation and entrepreneurship network to move their work out of the lab into the real world, where it can have maximum impact.

In the past decade, U of T has launched more than 500 research-based startups, more than any other Canadian university, generating more than $1.5 billion in investment. The university boasts more than 250 entrepreneurship-oriented courses and is home to 11 startup accelerators that help U of T students and faculty turn their ideas into businesses.

“Employers are increasingly seeking grads who bring innovative thinking and an entrepreneurial spirit to their organizations – so it’s no surprise that U of T is top of mind for many recruiters,” said Derek Newton , assistant vice-president, innovation, partnerships and entrepreneurship.

Similarly, Sargent says U of T’s culture of innovation, combined with world-class teaching and research, and its network of international partnerships, gives graduates a clear edge in a competitive global job market.

“U of T strives to foster a problem-solving mindset in its students,” he said. “That’s an essential skill that will serve them well in any career, anywhere in the world.”

U of T continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and ranked among the top universities globally in the five most closely watched international rankings: Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University World University Ranking.

National ranking of teacher pay spells bad news for Florida educators. Here's what to know

The report ranked average teacher pay and starting teacher pay across the country, and compared both to what's considered a livable wage in each state..

times higher education employability ranking 2023

Florida has officially dropped to 50th in a ranking of average teacher pay across the country, according to a report published in April by the National Education Association.

Only West Virginia ranks below Florida's average educator salary of $53,098. The report included all states and Washington, D.C., and ranked both average starting teacher salary and average teacher salary using data reported directly by school districts.

Despite recent pushes by Gov. Ron DeSantis to allocate more money for better teacher pay, Florida remains low on the list compared with other states.

Florida was ranked slightly higher in teacher pay last year at 48th in the nation.

The report comes as the Florida legislature has approved modest increases in the amount of money it gives schools based on the number of students who attend. At $12,488 per student, Florida's per-student allocation ranks 42nd in the country, according to the report from NEA.

New York, which ranks first in funding per student, spends $30,867, more than double Florida's amount. Neighboring Georgia spends $14,083 per student, the report found.

The Florida Education Association, the statewide federation of teachers unions, has called on lawmakers to increase funding by $2.5 billion a year to address teacher pay, hire more mental health specialists and address students' post-pandemic academic needs.

More on teacher pay: Some Palm Beach County teachers get second jobs to pay bills. Now they're in for a 7% raise

"Once again, despite a thriving economy, Florida is failing to prioritize the needs of students by not fairly compensating teachers and staff," said Andrew Spar, president of the Florida Education Association.

Spar blamed a mentality in the Legislature "that teachers in Florida should just shut up and be quiet."

"They’re not going to do that," Spar said. "They’re walking away from the profession or they're saying, 'Our public schools matter too much for us not to stand up and speak out.' "

Here's what to know about teacher pay and the report.

What is starting teacher pay in Florida?

Florida fared far better in the ranking of average salaries for starting teachers.

At $47,178, Florida's average starting teacher pay ranks 16th in the country. The place with the top salary for starting teachers is Washington, D.C., with an average of $63,373.

Average salaries are far below minimum livable wage in Florida

The report shows that both starting teacher pay and average teacher pay come in far below what's considered a livable wage in Florida, which is $58,970 per year.

The report defined a livable wage as the "income needed for family of one adult and one child to have a modest but adequate standard of living in the most affordable metro area in 2023 dollars, as defined by the Economic Policy Institute."

How much do teachers in Palm Beach County make?

The starting salary for teachers in Palm Beach County is $51,500, according to 2023 figures from the school district.

Teachers can be paid up to $77,233 if they have 25 years of experience.

All teachers with more than one year of experience currently get a supplement to their salary worth up to $10,000 due to a referendum passed by voters in 2018 and again in 2022.

Top 5 states for teacher pay

Here are the top five states and districts for average teacher pay:

  • California — $95,160
  • New York — $92,696
  • Massachusetts — $92,307
  • Washington state — $86,804
  • Washington D.C. — $84,882

  • 51. West Virginia — $52,870

How did NEA get this teacher pay data?

All but four state and district departments of education provided NEA with estimated teacher pay data for the current school year in February.

Connecticut, District of Columbia, Montana and Rhode Island salary averages were estimated from data from the 2022-23 school year.

The national average salary was weighted by the number of teachers in each state.

How was this report funded?

The report compiled data from each state and was conducted by the National Education Association, the largest labor union in the U.S. that represents public school employees.

The NEA gets funding from its dues-paying members and investments. The association has about 3 million members, according to its website.

Although it is a nonpartisan organization, the NEA has endorsed or provided support for every Democratic presidential nominee from Jimmy Carter to Joe Biden.

Fast facts from NEA teacher pay study

  • Even with record-level increases in some states, average teacher pay has failed to keep up with inflation over the past decade. Adjusted for inflation, on average, teachers are making 5% less than they did 10 years ago, according to the report.
  • About 77% of U.S. school districts pay a starting salary below $50,000, while teacher salaries top out over $100,000 in 16.6% of districts. About 28% of school districts start teachers at less than $40,000 per year, the report says.
  • Teachers earn 26% more, on average, in states with collective bargaining. Education support professionals covered by unions earn 16% more, the report found.
