Impact of Teachers on a Student’s Life

Growing up, our parents and teachers are the first ones to impact our lives significantly. In fact, in the younger years, students have complete faith in their teachers and they listen to their teachers more than their parents. This shows the significance and impact of a teacher .

teacher long essay

When we become older and enter college, teachers become our friends. Some even become our role models. They inspire us to do great things in life. We learn how to be selfless by teachers. Teachers unknowingly also teach very important lessons to a student.

For instance, when a student gets hurt in school, the teacher rushes them to the infirmary for first aid. This makes a student feel secure and that they know a teacher plays the role of a parent in school.

In other words, a teacher does not merely stick to the role of a teacher. They adapt into various roles as and when the need arises. They become our friends when we are sad, they care for us like our parents when we are hurt. Thus, we see how great a teacher impacts a student’s life and shapes it.

Essay On Teacher

A teacher is someone who facilitates students' acquisition of information, competence, or virtue through the activity of teaching. A teacher is the individual who will educate and improve you as a person. They also recognise their students' potential when no one else does. Here are a few sample essays ‘teacher’.

Essay On Teacher

100 Words Essay On Teacher

Teachers are the second parent who helps the students balance their lives in the right path. A teacher shows not only academic knowledge but also shares ethical and moral values. This will help us to shape our personality as better as human beings. Similar to how we got influenced by our parents in our childhood, our teachers will also help us to shape into the people we want to become when we grow up. Teachers teach their students to identify both good and bad things in life. Teachers also determine the fate of a nation since they have influence over the children.

200 Words Essay On Teacher

Parents are our first teachers who guide us on how to work, how to eat, how to speak. The second teacher is the one who guides us in studies. The third teacher is a manager or a lead who guides us in our work. Finally, a teacher is not only the one who teaches in school or a college but they can be anyone or anywhere who guides us.

Teachers never discriminate amongst their students. The key to success, according to many, is education. The teachers are entrusted with this significant responsibility. Only their knowledge, abilities, and teaching attitudes differ, but they all strive to offer the student their very best. Our interest in studying will be piqued by the way they instruct us.

I did not enjoy math when I was in school. I am aware that it is rather typical for many of us to dislike math in school. The teacher would tell us that the first person to solve a math problem would be rewarded with a chocolate. My arithmetic skills improved because of the anticipation of winning chocolate. It's just a little trick the teacher used to keep the subject interesting for us students.

500 Word Essay

During teaching, a teacher uses all creativity in such a way that each and every student can concentrate on their studies. Having such patience and confidence in handling every student is possible only for a teacher.

Teacher's day

Teacher's day is a special day for the appreciation of teachers. Every year teacher's day is celebrated on 5 September on the birth anniversary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The first teacher day in India was celebrated on 5 September 1962. Since then teacher's day is celebrated in every school, universities, colleges and educational institutions

In ancient days teachers were called "Guru" . The Guru used to educate their shishyas ( Students). In the past, Guru used to teach his shishya at gurukulam ar ashrama. They were supposed to teach about Veda, Warcraft, spirituality and other necessary skills. One of the greatest Guru- Shishya duo since the time of Mahabharata is Dronacharya and Arjuna. Similarly as Teachers day, Guru purnima or Vyasa purnima is celebrated to pay our gratitude to our gurus.

Ancient Relation of Student and Teacher

There used to be a very sacred relationship in ancient times between teacher and the student. There are so many stories written in our scriptures . Out of all those, the sacrifice made by Ekalavya for Dronacharya is one which shows the relationship between teacher and a student.

The relationship between the teacher and a student is lacking in recent times. Nowadays it is considered as just a profession. It has become a source of income or a business when compared to the past. We should be conscious enough not to stain such a noble profession and should not create an example which will break people's trust in teachers.

Success of a Teacher

Every teacher's aim is to teach his or her student. By some teachers we gain knowledge, by some we gain ethics and by some we gain practical knowledge. But everywhere and at any time the success of a teacher is that they get only when their student reaches great heights in the right way.Hardwork is the key to being a good teacher. Unity in heart, without any discrimination towards any one will make you a good teacher.

Importance of Teacher

Every student's life has a teacher who serves as a support system. Since not all students have the same abilities, a teacher must teach in a way that a sufficient number of students can understand. They educate us about time management and its limitations.

Inspiration

When a child is questioned about what they want to be when they grow up. In addition to being a police officer, doctor, or lawyer, some of them will declare that teaching is their true calling. Therefore, a teacher is a person who many look up to and emulate.

Last but not least, teaching is a responsibility to mould the brains of many young people, not merely a way to make money. I have a great respect for all the teachers in my life who have had and will continue to have a big impact. Another important insight to remember is that "teaching is a profession that teaches all other professions" .

Essay About Being a Teacher: Top 5 Examples and Prompts

If you are writing an essay about being a teacher, here are some examples to give you inspiration.

Without a doubt, teaching is one of the most important professions one can have. Teachers give children the lessons they must learn to face the future and contribute positively to society. They can be considered the gateway to success stories such as Oprah Winfrey , Adele , and John Legend , all of whom have cited their teachers as major inspirations to their careers.

Many educators would say that “teaching is its own reward.” However, it may be difficult to see how this is the case, especially considering the fact that being an educator entails massive amounts of stress and pressure. Teaching has actually been reported to be one of the most underpaid jobs , yet many teachers still love what they do. Why is this?

If you want to write an essay about being a teacher, whether you are one or not, you can get started by reading the 5 examples featured here.

1. Reflections on being a teacher … by Darren Koh

2. teaching in the pandemic: ‘this is not sustainable’ by natasha singer, 3. why i got rid of my teacher’s desk by matthew r. morris, 4. stress is pushing many teachers out of the profession by daphne gomez, 5. doubt and dreams by katheryn england, top writing prompts on essay about being a teacher, 1. what makes teaching so fulfilling, 2. what can you learn from being a teacher, 3. why do people become teachers, 4. should you become a teacher, 5. how have teachers helped you become who you are today.

“Although strictly speaking, based on the appointments I hold, I really do not have time to do much of it. I say teach, not lecturing. The lecturer steps up to the lectern and declaims her knowledge. She points out the difficulties in the area, she talks about solutions to problems, and she makes suggestions for reform. The focus is on the subject – the students follow. The teacher, however, needs to meet the students where they are in order to bring them to where they have to be. The focus is on the student’s ability.”

Koh writes about how he teaches, the difficulties of teaching, and what it means to be a teacher. He helps his students hone their skills and use them critically. He also discusses the difficulty of connecting with each student and focusing their attention on application rather than mere knowledge. Koh wants students to achieve their full potential; teaching to him is engaging, inspirational, and transparent. He wants readers to know that being a teacher is rewarding yet difficult, and is something he holds close to his heart.

“‘I work until midnight each night trying to lock and load all my links, lessons, etc. I never get ahead,” one anonymous educator wrote. ‘Emails, endless email. Parents blaming me because their kids chose to stay in bed, on phones, on video games instead of doing work.’”

Singer writes about the difficult life of teachers trying to balance in-person and distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of the standard class routine, being a teacher during the pandemic has entailed the burden of handling students who opt for remote learning. They are faced with additional struggles, including connection issues, complaining parents, and being overworked in general- it’s as if they teach twice the number of classes as normal. This is exhausting and may prove detrimental to the American education system, according to the sources Singer cites.

“What it means to me is that I am checking (or acknowledging) my privilege as a teacher in the space of the classroom and in order to facilitate a more equitable classroom community for my students, erasing one of the pillars of that inequity is a step in the right direction. I am comfortable in my role as the head member in my classroom, and I don’t need a teacher’s desk anymore to signify that.”

Morris, an educator, writes about what teaching means to him, highlighted by his decision to remove his teacher’s desk from his classroom. Being a teacher for him is about leading the discussion or being the “lead learner,” as he puts it, rather than being an instructor. His removal of the teacher’s desk was decided upon based on his desire to help his students feel more equal and at home in class. He believes that being a teacher means being able to foster authentic connections both for and with his students.

“Teachers want to help all students achieve, and the feeling of leaving any student behind is devastating. The pressure that they put on themselves to ensure that they serve all students can also contribute to the stress.”

Gomez writes about the stress that comes with being a teacher, largely due to time constraints, lack of resources, and the number of students they must instruct. As much as they want to help their students, their environment does not allow them to touch the lives of all students equally. They are extremely pressured to uphold certain standards of work, and while they try as hard as they can, they do not always succeed. As a result, many teachers have left the profession altogether. Gomez ends her piece with an invitation for teachers to read about other job opportunities.

“Then I re-evaluate what I want for myself, and what it is that keeps me working towards my dreams. Through the goals I’ve set for myself, I can maintain focus, move past my self-doubt and succeed. By focusing on my goals, I can make a difference in the world directly around me.”

Taken from a collection of short essays, England’s essay is about why she so desperately wishes to become a teacher. She was previously able to work as a teaching assistant to her former elementary school teacher, and enjoyed imparting new knowledge unto children. Even in moments of self-doubt, she reminds herself to be confident in her dreams and hopes to be able to make a difference in the world with her future profession.

How My Best Teacher Helped Me Learn

One of the most important things that my best teacher taught me was how to learn. This was one of the most valuable lessons that I ever learned, and it has served me well throughout my academic career.

In addition to teaching me how to learn, my best teacher also taught me how to think critically about what I was learning. Finally, I strive to think critically and challenge my own ideas and beliefs. Mrs. Nguyen taught me invaluable lessons that have shaped who I am today as a person and a writer. Her words of encouragement continue to inspire me every day to be the best version of myself while striving for greatness in all aspects of life.

As I recall my best teacher, Mrs. Smith, her dedication to teaching and inspiring me remains unmatched. She pushed me to think critically and apply the knowledge she shared in a meaningful way. Her enthusiasm for learning was contagious, motivating me to strive for excellence in all areas of life. With her guidance and mentorship, I am now able to take advantage of opportunities that otherwise may have been out of reach. Mrs. Smith is undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in my life, and I will always be thankful for having such an amazing teacher.

Introduction:

Teachers are the ones who play a very vital role in shaping our future. From the Pre-Kinder Garden to your Post-Doctoral fellowships, they teach, impart knowledge, share ethical values, and imbibe morality, thereby shaping our personality as a strong one.

My Teacher:

Throughout our lives, we will be having many kith and kins who will hold a special place in our hearts. For me, one such person is my teacher. All of us, for sure, will definitely agree to the fact that the kinship between us and our kinder garden teachers could not be well-defined. I like my nursery teacher, so much. There is something very magical about her. Maybe, she was the first teacher in my life or maybe, she was very sweet in talking to all of us, I am unable to portray why she is always my favourite. I relied on her blindly.

Unforgettable Memories:

I have some cherished memories with my teacher. Whenever I think of those memories, it makes me blissful. On the last day of my nursery school, I started crying at the very thought of leaving her and having a new teacher. I had fallen sick due to crying for hours together. I skipped my food. My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

Conclusion:

Having a good teacher who can share an amalgamated relationship with the students is a boon. A good teacher should be a good mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend and above all a surrogate parent to the children. I am lucky that I had gotten one in my lifetime.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

In school, you tend to interact with a lot of people who can either impact your life positively or negatively. A teacher is one neutral person who will manage to strike a balance between the positive and the negative. Teachers have a huge responsibility that we students may not understand. All in all our teachers try their best to provide an education, guidance and discipline despite the challenges we might impose on them. The life of a student is entirely dependent on a teacher because most of their time is spent in school rather than with parents that is why teachers play a major role in shaping the lives of young children through school.

Who Is my favourite Teacher?

I have several teachers now that I am in high school but there is only one whom I can relate to as “the teacher” because of the impact he has made in my life. The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

How the teacher has impacted my life in school .

Mentorship goes along way depending on the approach used. When I first joined high school, I did not have much confidence in myself. This teacher mentored me and made me believe in myself. The good thing is the attention he gives t is students because most of the times, he follows up on the performances and ensures that he does everything he can to help students improve academically. He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. Through following his footsteps, I have been able to dedicate myself into studies and sports, which has helped me to achieve my goals.

In conclusion, good teachers are hard to find but when you find one, make the most out of them.

The word “teacher” depicts a person that teaches. English dictionary defines teacher as “a person who teaches, especially one employed in a school”. A more recent definition of teacher in the linguistics field is “a tutor that interacts with the learners in order to facilitate good learning”.

Types of Teachers

Old method teachers: the teachers found under this method adopt the rigid mode of impartation of knowledge. They control the class the way a king would rule over his subjects. Old method teachers are less concerned about the welfare of their learners, they are syllabus-oriented.

New method teachers: the tutors under this model are student-oriented. They are more concerned about their learners and their various levels of understanding. They accept and promote contributions in class unlike the old method teachers. New method teachers encourage the inquisitiveness of their students.

Attributes of a Teacher:

A standard teacher has all or most of the various characters imbedded in them:

  • Compassionate
  • Open-minded
  • A good counselor
  • Friendly and most importantly
  • Approachable.

Attributes of My Favorite Teacher:

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

In conclusion, my teacher has all the attributes and more of a new method teachers. He is capable of combining all modes of teaching, he is compassionate, passionate, and friendly. From my interactions with him, I can confidently say that he is one of the best teachers around.

A teacher plays a very important life in shaping your life as well as career. My Teachers, My Role Models

During my formative years, I have come across many teachers who have influenced my life for the better. Having being studies in a convent school, I got to face a much-disciplined environment during my school years. The teachers, although were very polite in their behaviour, at the same time ensuring that we all followed a disciplined life. We were taught how to inculcate these values in our daily life so as to be better human beings when we grow up and face the world. Although all the teachers were good, there is one teacher whose teachings I just cannot forget. She is Ms Kirti Bhushan. Her teachings have been so powerful and impactful that I can still feel them during my day to day decisions even today.

My Best Teacher

Ms Kirti was my class educator as well and took participation in the daily activities with us as well. She was a strict instructor anyway extremely amusing and mind in nature. At the same time, she was extremely restrained and dependable. She did her work perfectly with the class at a perfect time without getting late. I liked her, particularly as she attempted simple approaches to show us beneficial things. We made the most of her class. She taught us English subject as well. She even made us giggle by telling heaps of jokes in the middle of when she taught. She likewise managed us exceptionally well amid any school or between school rivalry of the move, sports, scholastic, and so on. She instructed us to share things in class among our associates, for example, lunch or other required things.

Her Background

She was from Varanasi and completed her initial studies there itself. She took her higher education degrees from the Banaras Hindu University. She was extremely friendly and kind in nature. She realized well about how to deal with little youngsters in the class. Her one of a kind style of educating is perhaps what I mostly recall her for. She looks extremely savvy with shimmer eyes and fair hair.

She generally smiled when she entered the classroom and first got some information about our prosperity. She additionally helped us in the games at whatever point our games instructor was missing. She had a smiling face even during the strict environment during the examination times. She constantly rebuffed to the students who were with fragmented home works. She was acclaimed for making loads of fun amid the class time and ensure there was a positive ambience all around.

She was an instructor with great aptitudes of educating, well-disposed nature, great comical inclination, understanding and nice. I am proud to be one of her favourite students, as she always said good things about me to other teachers. At times she gave us chocolates on doing great in the class tests and exams. She never gave us heaps of assignments at home. She was exceptionally eager and constantly spurred us for doing our best in the examination.

Teacher’s In Today’s Scenario

Today the general population are changing and their reasoning and advancement thoughts are more against nature. Presently for the world, a teacher is only a teacher. Various offices and departments only tend to remember them on teachers day during various events and usually do not remember them otherwise. Individuals also share few posts via web-based networking media with respect to teachers and after that just forget them. Individuals overlook a bigger number of things that they are gaining from teachers. Schools and students also praise the teacher’s day event and value the endeavours teachers are doing. This is incredible if individuals ought to pursue the exercises of teachers also.

The genuine present for teachers is when students turn into a decent individual, effective in their vocation and business. Not all teacher are great in instructing and comparatively, not all students resemble “Shishya and Guru” particularly in the advanced period. A few teachers are incredible and they are dependable in heart of students all life along.

Students admire teachers for counsel and direction. Students are inspired by scholastic exercises as well as they are intrigued to pursue their life exercises. Long-Lasting Impact of a Teacher on a Student Essay

Teaching has been esteemed as one of the noblest professions for the last many centuries all over the world. The teachers were thought to be the brain-developers and personality-building of the greatest personalities, including rulers, philosophers, intellectuals, conquerors, generals and scientists. The significance of this profession had been evident due to coaching and shaping the mind and character of the new generation. It is the teacher, as the thinkers opine, which play a pivotal role in the education and training of the whole generation. Jones (2000) observes: “The mind is cultivated, nurtured, and assisted primarily by teachers. And because of these essential activities, teachers and the profession of teaching have been esteemed throughout history.”

The source of teaching, once limited to academies and centres in the past, has widely been spread all over the globe. Schools, colleges and universities were established with the passage of time. The twentieth century brought a tremendous revolution in all fields of life, including science, technology, industrialization and advancement. This also affected the teaching profession. Colleges and educational training centres were set up at the community level, and the latest branches of knowledge of science and arts were introduced. This not only upraises the level of education and eradicated ignorance and illiteracy altogether but also offered the members of the community chances of seeking education at a higher level even by living in their own community. It has tremendously increased the responsibilities of the teachers. In order to regulate the activities related to all the professions, each and every culture and society identifies different sets of laws to maintain peace and harmony. The same is the case with the occupation of teaching. As a teacher is the fashioner of the young brains, there must be professional ethics to identify the rights and duties in the course of a dual relationship between teacher and student. Since a teacher is a central figure and the most observed person, his activities, behaviour and attitude is keenly noted, liked and admired on the one hand, and disliked and criticised the other. The behaviour of a teacher, either good or bad, leaves indelible effects on the personality of students. There can be observed a cause and effect relationship while examining the association between the two. The contemporary world maintains a highly diversified population in every corner of the world, where students belonging to different religious, cultural, racial and gender groups seek education under one roof under the supervision and control of a teacher. If a teacher does not display any type of biasedness or prejudice towards any specific group and remains neutral and kind to all the students, they will not only become noble, and peace-seeking members of society in their practical life, but also such a responsible attitude of the teacher may create an ideal and exemplary social set up where peace and harmony will prevail in the world at large. It is, therefore, schools and educational institutions are considered as the most imperative social institutions of man’s life.

A teacher’s conduct based on ethics, including unconditional loyalty and devotion while working in the classroom, honesty, responsibility, reliability, trustworthiness, impartiality, punctuality, manners, fairness, neutrality, and hard work are sure to make a great nation consists of scholars, scientists and creators. On the other hand, if he displays favouritism and prejudices towards one student or group, it may hurt the feelings of others. Consequently, an atmosphere of jealousy and conflict may arise in the classroom, where sentiments of grudge and malice will start taking place in the innocent minds of the students. Their hatred against one another can result in clashes, and ultimately, it may pave the way in developing criminal behaviour among the students. The researches are replete with examples of the causes of criminal behaviour, which clearly prove the very fact that neglecting a child and keeping a prejudiced attitude towards him make the foundation of a criminal. Thus, a teacher’s unnecessary harshness and expressions of disliking may result in serious consequences in the future years to come.

The dual relationship between students and teachers must be on the grounds of the highest standards of honour and veracity. Not only this but also the students must respect the knowledge the teacher obtains rather looking into mere his rude behaviour. They must keep in mind the instructions and pieces of advice of the teacher. The students are bound under the ethical principles to be always regular and punctual while attending the classroom. They must be attentive in the classroom and never try to humiliate the teacher at any point. The teacher must always be beyond all biased attitudes towards each and every student. He should be impartial while giving rewards for doing well and announcing punishment. Ethics indicates that a teacher must listen to the problems of the students carefully and must try to resolve these troubles sympathetically. Moral values suggest that a teacher is an honest and loyal person who always maintains dignity and morality. He must not use abusive language or insulting remarks especially indicating towards some specific race, gender, community, caste, religion or nation. If a teacher uses slang words or applies abuse language, the students are almost bound to imitate the same.

A teacher must exercise efforts and render services for the uplift of the students by keeping in close contact with all the students without discrimination. He must transfer his knowledge and wisdom to the innocent minds of the budding genius. If he does not fulfil his duties and pays no heed to his obligations, it may have a very bad effect on the students. It has aptly been said that “better untaught, than ill-taught.” Thus, if a teacher neglects his duties, he is growing a crop of inefficient, dull, lazy, sluggish and irresponsible students. On the other hand, attending to all the students carefully and getting involved in their problems may make them sincere, responsible, capable and hardworking members of society. Delivering the lecture and directing the students in and outside the classroom can observe the kindness of the teacher. A noble teacher always looks busy in providing the students with emotional support and guidance if they consult him in the library, staff room and even in the playground. If a teacher encourages the students in their extra curriculum activities, he is creating debaters, sportsmen, leaders and pioneers from his own classroom, over which he can be proud of in future by looking at the people praising their talent and admiring their works.

Importance of Teachers in Our Lives

Teachers are those who make children knowledgeable and cultured. A teacher is a beautiful gift given by god because god is a creator of the whole world and a teacher is a creator of a whole nation. A teacher is such an important creature in the life of a student, who through his knowledge, patience and love give a strong shape to a student’s whole life.

A teacher shares academic knowledge, ethical values and assimilates moral values that help us shape our personality as better human beings. They represent an open book and try to share their life experience for a better tomorrow. A teacher has many qualities, they are efficient in their student’s life and success in every aspect. A teacher is very intelligent. They know how the mind of students gets concentrated in studies.

During teaching, a teacher uses creativity so that students can concentrate on their studies. They are a repository of knowledge and have the patience and confidence to take responsibility for the future of the student. They only want to see their students successful and happy. Teachers are very prestigious people in the society, who through their magic of education, take the responsibilities of raising the lifestyle and mind level of the common people.

Parents expect a lot from teachers. Teachers are the second parents who help the students balance their lives and spend the maximum childhood time. Just as our parents influence our childhood years, our teachers help shape us into the people we want to become when we grow up, having a huge impact on our lives. Students have complete faith in their teachers. In younger years, Students used to listen to their teachers more than anyone else as they used to spend more time with them than anyone else.

The role of the teacher varies from class to game. A teacher is an important creature in everyone’s life who appears to do different things in our life. They are the creator of a wonderful future for our nation.

Importance of a Teacher

A teacher has an important place not only in student life but also in every phase of life. They have all qualities which they distribute in their students. They know that not everyone has the same ability to receive, so a teacher observes all the abilities of each of their students and in the same way, they teach children. A teacher is a great listener of knowledge, prosperity, and light, from which we can benefit greatly throughout our life. Every teacher helps their students in choosing their path. Teachers teach their students how to respect elders. They tell their students the difference between respect and insult and many more. A teacher equips his/her student with the knowledge, skills, and positive behavior honored which the student never feels lost. The teacher makes them aware of how to use time and the restriction of time. A good teacher makes a good impression on his students. When any student makes a mistake, the teacher teaches them a lesson and also makes them realize their mistake. They teach us to wear clean clothes, eat healthy food, stay away from the wrong food, take care of parents, treat others well, and help us in understanding the importance of completing work.

A teacher has many qualities which hold a special place in every student’s life. Teachers embrace various roles they are our friends when we get sad, our parents when we are hurt, and always good advisers. Teachers reward their students for their good work while sometimes punishing them for realizing the mistake to understand that this is not right for their lives.

Children’s future and present both are made by the teacher. He also enhances a good society by creating a good student throughout his life. Only a teacher knows what kind of association his student lives in and what kind of association he holds.

Teachers are great role models. The teachers influence students’ decidedness. For example, India’s most respectable President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, achieved his position as a great aerospace engineer because of his teacher. Mr. Siva Subramania Iyer’s teachings on how birds fly influenced Dr. Kalam’s contribution to society.

Not only in the education field, but there are also numerous examples in sports too, where teachers played a vital role in shaping the career of the athletes. A notable example is batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who credits his coach and teacher, Mr. Ramakant Achrekar, for success. Like this, there are numerous examples in various fields of dance, music, acting, arts, science where teachers act as a pivotal role in shaping the life of their disciples.

Relation of Student and the Teacher

The relationship between the teacher and the student was very sacred in ancient times as education was so perfect. There are so many stories written in our scriptures that revolve around student and teacher relationships. Out of all those, the supreme sacrifice made by Eklavya is of prime importance and showcases a student’s dedication towards his teacher.

Alas, This relation is lacking in recent times. Nowadays, it is considered a mere profession. It has become a business or source of income compared to earlier days where it was considered a noble profession. We should be conscious enough not to stain this noble profession and should not create an example that lifts people’s trust in teachers.

In India, we gave great importance to the teacher. According to the Indian concept, the teacher is the spiritual and intellectual father of the teacher. No education is possible without the help of the teacher. He is regarded as the “Guru” – a speculator, a companion, and a guide.

In ancient India, the transmission of knowledge was oral, and the teacher was the sole custodian of knowledge. The relationship between the teacher and the students was amiable and deep in ancient times.

Hard Work is the Key to be a Teacher

It takes a lot of hard work to be a good teacher. First of all, always respect the elders and also obey them. Concentration should be increased toward society and education. To be a good teacher, one has a sense of unity in the heart, does not discriminate against anyone, everyone should be seen with a glance. They always encourage students, they never criticize their students. Develops a good interpersonal relationship with a student. One should always tell good things to their younger ones and always treat the classmate well, always take inspiration from the teacher.

The teacher has a huge contribution to our life. No one can developmentally, socially, and intellectually in their life without a teacher. Many teachers slap students, many give punishment but in the end, the teacher is never bad. It only depends on the way they teach, which is different for everyone and this creates a different image in the student’s mind. They do whatever just to make our future bright.

Every year, some teachers get honored. Teachers’ day is celebrated every year on 5 September, in memory of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, India’s second President. India is a home ground of some great teachers like Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Premchand, Swami Vivekanand, who have given some great lessons of life which are still in trend. On this day a special ceremony takes place in the school, in which students participate enthusiastically. A nation always honors all those teachers who help in eradicating ignorance of darkness. A teacher is an ocean of knowledge, we should keep acquiring knowledge on a subject for as long as possible.

Teachers play perhaps the most crucial role in the process of one’s education. They dedicate their lives to passing on knowledge to younger generations. They are the key to progress in society and secure the future of upcoming generations.

What Is An Ideal Teacher?

An ideal teacher is one that leaves a lasting impression a child as they progress through their learning journey. They inspire the kids with their expertise in the subject, and guide them through all the difficulties along the way. They look out for the students and motivate them to recognise their own talents and abilities. They constantly raise their confidence with a positive spirit and empower them with knowledge.

Qualities An Ideal Teacher Must Have

A primary characteristic of an ideal teacher would be their own expertise. They would usually be very knowledgeable about their subject and would be able to answer any doubts. They would constantly be keeping themselves updated with that specific field and reading more scholarly works about that subject. They would be passionate about this subject, and that passion would encourage students to work hard in that ideal teacher’s class. If they are well-aware of their subject, it makes them self-confident.

This confidence shows on the teacher’s face and in their behaviour towards students, which would also help in creating an excellent first impression. Being an ideal teacher would not be limited merely to teaching – it would also extend to being a mentor and guardian to students, helping them with whatever problems they have. The teacher would be able to build a strong, trustworthy relationship with the students.

There are a lot of qualities that make a teacher Ideal and excellent, however it all boils down to some core factors. It is important to note that consistency in these qualities will contribute to the overall image of the school.

1. Attentive

The most important quality of an ideal teacher is their ability to be attentive to all their students. They need to be able to respond quickly and efficiently so as not to lose students’ attention, as well as interpret the needs of individual students and adapt their teaching according.

A teacher should ideally be a good orator and an excellent motivator. This is one area that is often overlooked in education, but is extremely important. They should be able to communicate their knowledge clearly and command the attention of all students. In addition they need to be able to inspire students with a vision of the future as well as keep them motivated.

A teacher should always remain fair in their treatment of all students. Expressing favouritism and treating children with partiality may make a teacher liked by a few students, but one who ensures all children are treated equally and given the same chances is respected by all.

4. Confident

A teacher ideally should have sound knowledge about the subject matter being taught. It is important for them to have confidence in their abilities so as to give their students the right impression.

Technology is an extremely important part in today’s world, so a teacher should be able to keep up with the advancements to make sure they are not left far behind. They need to understand the advantages of using technology in their teaching methods and then apply it accordingly.

7. Inspiring

A teacher is a role model for his or her students, so he or she needs to set an example by being an inspiration. They need to set goals and standards for themselves so as to inspire their students.

8. Creative

A teacher should be creative and teach new creative ideas to their student. They should introduce concepts that the students never knew of, which means they will have to get creative and come up with methods on how best to impart knowledge in a way that is easy to understand and grasp.

A teacher needs to be kind and friendly so as to form a good rapport with their students. They should be able to empathize with their student’s problems and try to help them in the best way possible.

10. Patient

Above all, a teacher needs patience in order to deal with all kinds of students. Their students may not be the most hardworking or attentive, so they need to have patience and teach them every day with the same enthusiasm as day one. Along with this quality, a teacher should also keep an open mind and try to understand their students instead of constantly labeling them with negative attributes.

Duties Of An Ideal Teacher

An ideal teacher takes their duty of educating the young generation very seriously. They are responsible for nurturing the future of our generation by educating them and opening up their minds to several possibilities and opportunities.

A good teacher has a duty to make the child understand the importance of education and dedicate themselves to their studies.

Another duty that a teacher has is to remain fair in all their judgements of their students. They must ensure that every child feels that they are heard. Some children may be quick to grasp concepts, others may require a bit more attention. An ideal teacher makes sure all the children have understood the lessons well.

It is the duty of a teacher to make sure that every child enjoys their right to education and that none is left behind due to unavailability of resources. Some teachers go above and beyond their day jobs to ensure that children who lack resources, finances and opportunities also receive education by running night schools, special classes or education drives and camps in remote areas.

What Will Your Child Learn From An Ideal Teacher Essay?

A good teacher is patient and kind. They understand that learning can be challenging for everyone and always offer assistance when we need it or provide encouragement when we feel discouraged.

Teachers work tirelessly to create an atmosphere in their classroom where all children feel included and valued, encouraging us to work collaboratively, respect each other’s differences, and find peaceful solutions to problems.

As students and educators ourselves, we should express our thanks and appreciation for their hard work by working hard, being kind and respectful, and thanking them for all they do.

Remember, teachers are special people who make an enormous difference in our lives – take the time now to appreciate all they do! Let’s thank them for everything!

Long Essay on Teacher – Essay 7 (600 Words)

Introduction

A teacher is a person who signifies your presence on earth as a well-mannered and educated person. One who plays a silent role in your development, making you successful. As per Hindu manuscripts, a teacher is called as ‘Guru’, and a guru has been ranked supreme, even more, valuable than God, because s/he is the person who teaches the significance of God to us. So, we pray guru first.

Who is a Teacher?

A teacher can be any one, depending on the circumstances. When a child is born, s/he remains in the custody of his/her mother and during this period of time, s/he learns to speak, walk and do many other activities. If a person who teaches is called teacher, so it is his/her mother who taught him/her the basic things of life. His/Her mother can be called as his/her first teacher in fact; all of us have this in common.

Importance of a Teacher

While in school, teachers introduce you to some subjects and they develop your skills and interest in a particular one. It can be science, literature or other subjects like drawing, music etc. It is not that every child has super abilities; it is a teacher who points out your skills and helps you to develop them. A good teacher can turn a boring subject quite interesting. A teacher is always very important for us because he gives bookish as well as practical knowledge and sometimes practical knowledge is very important. Books can’t teach us everything and the point where books fail, the only person who can help us is our teacher. This shows the importance of teachers is in our life.

Who can be a Teacher?

For a new born baby, his/her mother is the best teacher whereas, for a student it can be his dance teacher or his/her maths teacher. Anyone who gives you knowledge and enhances your intelligence can be your teacher. An ant can also be your teacher because it teaches us to work hard continuously without losing hope. All this concludes that a teacher does not have a particular face or religion, who so ever in this world teaches you any kind of lesson, can be your teacher.

Generally, while thinking about teachers, we imagine about our school teachers, and all of us have our favourite one, who always encouraged and helped us to attain our goals. It was my English teacher who used to teach us in such a wonderful way, that I started loving literature and decided to make my carrier in this stream. He always encouraged my writing skills and helped me out to make them perfect. Today I am really thankful that he was my teacher.

Life is all about learning till the last breath and the person who has knowledge can be a good teacher. It needs lots of courage and knowledge to teach and be in this profession. When a teacher is in a class, he has to handle more than thirty students at once and all from different background and interest.

Just imagine when you alone could irritate your mother so much, then what about other thirty students like you; what would be the level of pressure on a teacher. Hats off to all the teachers and the students who chose teaching as a carrier to shape up the future of the young ones. At least they have chosen something daring and it will be not be wrong to say that a teacher builds the future of a nation.

My dying high school writing teacher has one more lesson. Don't wait to say thank you.

The last words I spoke to George Lukacs were sincere but woefully delayed: “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Mr. Lukacs was my high school English teacher in the 1980s. He is, in many ways, the reason I write for a living.

In late March, I learned via a social media post that he’s dying, and realized I had never – not in the 30-plus years since graduating – told him what a profound impact he had on my life. I had never thanked him.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

So I rushed to track him down, and he graciously carved out time for a call. We caught up recently, we laughed and chatted, condensed decades into minutes, and I told him the things I should have said long ago. In that conversation, there was, appropriately, a final lesson.

Too often we forget to thank those who've helped us along the way

I wasn’t planning on writing about this – it was personal. But in the weeks that followed, it stuck with me, and I came to think what I learned from Mr. Lukacs should be shared.

It’s simple, really: Don’t wait. Don’t wait to thank those who have changed you. Don’t wait to let the teachers, mentors or counselors, the ones who once helped you take the next step, know they made your life better than it would have been without them.

A teacher who changed the way I think

When I entered Mr. Lukacs’ English class in high school, I already had the fundamentals of good writing stamped into my brain. I had learned the form and structure that undergird a strong essay, but it had often felt like someone was teaching me with one hand holding a lid tight on my imagination.

Mr. Lukacs lifted that lid. He was an advocate for young writers letting their freak flags fly. He delighted in creativity and busting some of the previously sacrosanct rules that restrained our inventiveness.

'Do not lose your sense of humor': Duke graduates who walked out on Jerry Seinfeld's commencement speech failed Life 101

He sarcastically awarded a gold-painted shovel – the Golden Shovel – to the students who most gloriously and effectively B.S.’d, as in "shoveled the bull----," their way through essays.

Other teachers had kept us grounded because we needed to be. Mr. Lukacs let us soar because we were ready.

High school comes and goes, and we move on

I remember him from high school as a character – affable and kind. His trademark laugh often echoed off the buildings, sounding – and I say this with great reverence – like someone had stepped on a dolphin’s tail.

As high school students often do, I moved on from the foundational teachers who molded and shaped my mind. I grew up, found a career, formed a family and lived. All things good teachers want for their charges. A good life.

And as that good life unfolds, we forget to look back.

A sad announcement that landed like a gut punch

In March, a friend shared a video Mr. Lukacs had posted. It was titled “ A Farewell Wave ,” words that punched.

I sat on my couch and watched as the now-gray-haired, bespectacled man looked into a camera and said: “Now an endgame has begun. I don’t know how much time I have, but it won’t likely be long.”

He was diagnosed with liposarcoma in 2001. Surgeries and treatment kept him alive, but his students, past and present, kept him going.

"The joy that I derived from interacting with all of you gave me a reason to be alive,” he said in the video.

He continued: “Thank you for making nearly every day of my life a joy. I hope that your lives have been magical. Even more, I hope that you recognize how magical they have been.”

A scramble for a chance to say thanks

I reached out to another past teacher to get Mr. Lukacs' email, then reached out to him asking to speak by phone, writing, “You have, lo these many years, remained a voice in the back of my head as I write.”

We had the chance to talk. I had the chance to tell him how much I owe him for teaching me to love writing and for showing me that I don't need to write like everyone else to be a writer – I just need to be myself and let the writing follow.

When I decided to share this story, I emailed him for permission. He responded, “I’m frankly surprised to be still here.” And he ended with “please write something powerful!”

No pressure.

We can all learn from Mr. Lukacs' final lesson

It’s my hope Mr. Lukacs will be able to read this before he ascends to the great classroom in the sky. (Don’t worry, I think he’d like that joke.)

But more so, I hope others read this and think about reaching back into their past and finding that person they should’ve thanked ages ago. That person who made a difference. That person who mattered.

Remember Jim Valvano: I inherited a cancer gene from my dad. He also left me a game plan to live.

A farewell, a poem and gratitude immeasurable

Mr. Lukacs ended his farewell video quoting the poet Walt Whitman: “And to die is different from what any one supposed, and luckier.”

That’s from Whitman’s epic “ Song of Myself .” As much as I will miss Mr. Lukacs, and as much as I appreciate him, I will never forgive him for forcing me to read a 52-part poem.

But I did (sort of … OK, I skimmed part of it), and what struck me was the line preceding the one he quoted: “All goes onward and outward, nothing collapses.”

Onward, Mr. Lukacs. Thank you for the final lesson. (Though I could’ve done without the poetry, if I’m being honest.)

Your student, always,

Are longer lessons better?

Some schools are opting for fewer but longer lessons. Find out what’s involved and if it’s working

An hourglass that has been split in two and the sand swirls in the space between.

Here’s a question: if, as we’re often told, concentration spans are shrinking, why are some schools opting to increase lesson time? Yet that’s exactly what Bottisham Village College in Cambridgeshire did last September, when it switched from 60 to 100-minute classes. The rationale wasn’t just about lessons, but the whole school day, including the impact of 1500 students on the move and the resulting lost learning time.

Helen Slipper, head of science, says the school also wanted to reduce the cognitive load of five lessons a day and provide opportunities to delve more deeply into a topic. Giving students time to collaborate and see each other’s perspective was another key consideration.

‘In a 60-minute lesson, you’re determined to make sure students learn what they should from a practical, and sometimes we shy away from spending too long on giving them opportunities to make suggestions, to hypothesise, to draw conclusions. The longer lesson gives them a little bit more scope to try and start to think more for themselves,’ she says.

Great for practicals

Lucy, a chemistry teacher at a London secondary school, can also see some advantages. ‘It’s brilliant for practicals,’ she realised, after finishing a ‘whole curriculum day’, working with students in preparation for GCSEs this summer.

‘You can really set up the practical: start from the beginning talking about the hypothesis, the variables and what you’re going to control, and get the students to think about how they would do the experiment and write a method before they even begin. When you only have an hour, you often have to do all those things in the lesson before. By the time you get to the practical, they’ve semi-forgotten it. It also gives you time to draw graphs at the end, analyse the data and discuss your conclusions. However, I wouldn’t want to be doing very long lessons for years 7 and 8.’

Teachers are using it as an opportunity to refresh their practice

She’s also less certain of the benefits in a lesson without a practical. ‘There’s a module in the syllabus that we do, on bonding. Obviously, you could get pupils to make models and so on, but then it’s the question of whether you have time to get through everything.’

Longer lessons take a lot of planning. Helen’s school researched the importance of recall, and ‘little and often’ approaches. It isn’t good enough to just stretch out the typical phases of a 60-minute lesson because that impacts students’ concentration.

‘You have shorter cycles of those processes – how you bring in a demonstration, how you bring in opportunities for practical work, so you have more parts to a lesson,’ Helen explains. ‘And it’s about moving them between each of those things to adjust their focus and maintain concentration, perhaps using a mini whiteboard to check understanding more often in a lesson (and before moving on). This is really powerful in breaking a students’ chain of thought, so they don’t feel it’s continually on the same track.’

How do younger students cope?

It’s important for teachers to get to know their students well, says Helen, and then to plan the phases and pacing to suit different classes – adjusting within a lesson if needs be.

Feedback from students is that they want to get up and do something in each lesson. That’s easy to achieve with science practicals, but more of a challenge in other subjects. Helen says teachers are thinking hard about transitions within lessons and using it as an opportunity to refresh teaching practice.

Build stronger relationships with pupils

What about the frequency of individual science lessons, Lucy asks, which may not matter as much in the early years, as these are topic-based. In her school, specialists teach different classes by year 9 – an easier split to make for the more frequent 60-minute lessons than 100 minutes.

‘We’re still covering the course in the same amount of time,’ responds Helen. ‘But we’re finding that we don’t feel rushed in what we’re doing with the students.’

Building teacher–pupil bonds

The hope is that longer classes will give teachers a better chance to build stronger relationships with pupils, but how does little and often square with having longer gaps between subject lessons? ‘We’ve worked hard on our homework – connecting lessons together,’ says Helen. ‘Students get a small piece focused on retrieval and consolidation every session, so they’re doing the linking work between those lessons.’

There’s a dynamic to think about, adds Lucy. ‘When you go to a new lesson or class … even as a teacher, with a new class, with a new topic … there is an energy there.’ She believes that most teachers might want to mix it up a bit with lesson length, for example, if there’s a difficult child. ‘Imagine the behaviour management if it’s not a school where the students are well behaved,’ she says.

Her school has five minutes between classes, ‘so all the kids move around from one place to another. OK, it’s a waste of time but they’re getting some exercise, so I think it’s probably a good waste of time.’

Meanwhile, at Bottisham staff and students are still getting used to a new system and experiencing what education is all about. ‘We’re continually learning,’ says Helen.

Ohio teachers' pension reforms should not be 'sleight of hand' at expense of taxpayers

The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio is the state's second largest public pension fund and oversees about $90 billion invested on behalf of 500,000 teachers and retirees.

Zachary Christensen is managing director of the Pension Integrity Project at Reason Foundation.

Facing multiple investigations by state officials of a "hostile takeover" of its managing board by private interests, Ohio's State Teachers Retirement System must address how it will protect its role as a fiduciary to members and taxpayers.

Self-proclaimed reformers have for years aimed to increase benefits without increasing costs through convoluted investment strategies. But this approach is not reform, it is just a sleight of hand to add to the growing costs and risks of pensions on taxpayers and school districts.

As  The Columbus Dispatch reported , Attorney General Dave Yost filed a lawsuit to remove two State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) board members “saying they breached their fiduciary duty to protect the pension fund.”

Teacher: I've been on an emotional roller coaster 30 years and I am exhausted

The accusations involve an  anonymous memo  alleging improper connections of the system's board to outside parties.

The memo details a years-long campaign by a teacher advocacy group to hand more than half of the public pension system's $92.8 billion in assets to a private investment group named QED Management LLC, which promised savings in administrative costs and massive bumps in investment returns using untested trading strategies, presumably artificial intelligence as the proposed name of the partnership was OhioAI.

These projected outcomes were sold as a no-cost way to bring back teacher benefits that were previously cut to address growing pension costs and debt.

Why is QED problematic?

The issue was that QED had no clients and no track record to back these promises, leading to a resounding rejection by STRS investment consultants. They did, however, convince a teachers' advocacy group, the Ohio Retirement for Teachers Association (ORTA), that their approach was the key to getting benefits back, but the STRS board stood in the way.

The lack of any cost-of-living adjustments for retirement benefits has become a major topic of discussion for Ohio educators.

Reforms passed in 2015 gave the STRS board discretion to adjust this benefit and others—like contribution rates and retirement age—if it found that it was necessary to maintain a path to full funding of the pension system.

The cost-of-living adjustment was discontinued indefinitely in 2017 due to ongoing funding challenges at STRS, but many saw this QED proposal as their big chance to get those benefits back.

With the financial and influential backing of ORTA, proponents of the investment scheme engaged in a coordinated pressure campaign aimed at swaying STRS staff and trustees, eventually reshaping its governing board with elected members who are openly in favor of adopting any investment strategy as long as it pays for benefit enhancements. As the anonymous memo alleges, with the self-proclaimed "reformers"  recently elected , the STRS board could make the system invest in QED, despite the warnings of the plan's investment advisors.

The ongoing tumult and recent investigations into the STRS board show a major problem with the body's structure. The majority of the board, seven of the 11 members, are elected by teachers. The remaining seats are filled by politically appointed experts.

Needs of taxpayers take back seat

While it is important for teachers to have a voice in their retirement system, these elected members have no connection or accountability to the policymakers and taxpayers who will ultimately foot the bill for any unexpected pension costs.

It is predictable, then, that the board increasingly leans into ideas to increase benefits, even at the risk of significant costs to taxpayers from, for example, an ill-advised investment.

Ohio school districts and taxpayers need an STRS board that will actually address the ongoing debt challenges facing the pension system, not looking for back-end opportunities to add to the funding problems.

Despite several sacrifices already made by active and retired teachers and school districts, Ohio STRS is still more than $20 billion short of paying for promised pension benefits, a debt that will cost school districts and ultimately taxpayers over $2.4 billion annually over more than 10 years.

Even worse, this steep path toward full funding of the pension system could easily become even more expensive for school districts if the plan's lofty investment return expectations are not met.

The allegations of collaboration to circumvent the STRS board's fiduciary duty are concerning.

Lawmakers should insulate the board from the influence of outside parties. It should also be clear to Ohioans that long-shot investment strategies that mask taxpayer risks are not the path toward improving teacher benefits.

Off-peak LIRR riders also deserve a break on fares

Kick off the people on the train who say they...

Kick off the people on the train who say they can’t afford it, a reader says about LIRR fare dodgers. Credit: Newsday/J. Conrad Williams Jr.

This guest essay reflects the views of Sabina Sethi Unni, a writer, urban planner and second-generation Long Islander who commutes into Manhattan from Long Island on the LIRR every day.

Perhaps you’re a construction worker who needs to be at a job site at 5:45 a.m. Perhaps you’re a nanny or domestic worker who cleans houses and starts at noon. Or a home care aide or nurse who starts a night shift at 9 p.m., or an adjunct teaching night school.

If you are, and you're commuting to or from Long Island, chances are you're riding the Long Island Rail Road during off-peak hours. Peak trains arrive weekdays in New York City terminals between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., depart those terminals between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., and have the highest demand and ridership. Everything else is off-peak. Peak tickets cost more than off-peak. But if you buy a monthly ticket to get a discount on daily fares, you pay the same price whether you're riding peak or off-peak. That's unfair and discriminatory.

It makes sense for peak fares to be higher than off-peak fares, and transit agencies stagger prices for a variety of reasons: increasing revenue based on higher demand (similar, but not quite, to Lyft and other ride-sharing apps), subsidizing extra costs like greater electricity use for extra cars needed for peak trains, and reducing the financial burden for students, senior citizens, riders with disabilities, and low-income customers who ride off-peak. Equal fares mean off-peak riders are subsidizing peak riders who put more stress on the system.

Daily commuters like me benefit from buying monthly tickets, which give peak riders a discount from 55% to 66.5% per trip compared to the cost of buying single peak tickets, depending on the length of the commute. But you won’t benefit from this if you’re a Long Islander who works outside “regular” hours because all monthly tickets are peak pricing.

Why is this discriminatory? Off-peak riders — often working-class New Yorkers in blue-collar and service industries dominated by people of color — are subsidizing fare discounts for peak riders, who have incomes at least 20% more than off-peak riders and take trips nearly double the length, according to City Observatory and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. If you ride the train during off-peak hours every day and get a monthly ticket, you’re losing anywhere between $69.24 to $173.57 a month. Weekly off-peak 10-ticket passes are even more expensive than a monthly peak pass, ranging from $70 to $410 more per month.

From our Editorial Board, get inside the local, city and state political scenes.

The MTA knows off-peak riders are disproportionately burdened by less frequent and reliable transit service (i.e., fewer trains and more cancellations). Why should these riders also have to pay thousands of additional dollars per year? And cost reductions often increase revenue. When the LIRR’s Atlantic Ticket program reduced ticket costs for rides between the LIRR's New York City stations to $5, ridership jumped 45% and revenue increased 22%.

Everyone deserves access to government-subsidized fees for public transportation, not just those who happen to commute on a 9-to-5 schedule.

Long Island has been forever plagued by the legacies of discriminatory housing practices, segregated schools, income inequality, and racism. The LIRR is not the salve for these issues, but small changes are a start to restitution. Instead of worrying about whether congestion pricing might harm low-income Long Islanders, we should focus on LIRR pricing which already does, and create an off-peak discounted monthly LIRR ticket.

If we can't make public transit truly equitable by making it free for all users, at least we can give off-peak riders the fare they deserve.

This guest essay reflects the views of Sabina Sethi Unni, a writer, urban planner and second-generation Long Islander who commutes into Manhattan from Long Island on the LIRR every day.
