Assamese Literature in New Media An Introduction

The role of the Internet among people's live increased dramatically after the last decade of the nineteenth century. Nowadays Internet has an outstanding impact on each and every dimension of human society including literature. As a consequence of the impact of new media some new trend in literature emerged, a new era of literature based on new media developed and spread in a different way. After the invention of Unicode by Unicode consortium, the path of this new era is opened for the regional languages. New Software's are developed and content in regional language are able to occupy a place for their own on the internet including the Assamese Language. Being the fourth pillar of democracy, the media has a very crucial role to play in the welfare of a nation, especially of a democratic nation like India. By providing the people with information about various issues related to the other three pillars- the Judiciary, the Executive and the Legislative - the media not only maintains the balance of democracy but also plays the important role of influencing the public, helping in formation of a public opinion, and thus acting as a crucial factor in changing socio-political values. The advancement in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has brought about far-reaching changes in the way the media functions these days. With an advent of the internet, the audience seeks more than just news; it also looks for other information, entertainment and infotainment. And this influence of ICT is seen to have extended to regional media outlets as well marking a great phase of transformation of regional media. In linguistically-diverse country like India, the importance of language journalism cannot be underplayed. The latest technology has enabled even the language press to publish and broadcast content on the internet. This clearly points to the fact that English is no longer the only language of the web doing away with the erstwhile limitations of language. With this newly added advantage, journalism can be turned into something more productive and reaching a wider audience. With the language barrier now out of the way, journalists can use the internet to disseminate news, information and other similar. Based on the primary and secondary data collected during the course of this research, the authors intend to study the trends in online Assamese journalism, implementation of ICT tools by journalists writing primarily in the Assamese language, their social media usage for journalistic endeavours. This paper also attempts to study the levels of awareness among the journalists about online laws, ethics governing the Indian press and at the same time will also try to understand the degree of digital literacy among the community of journalist of Assam.

The Assamese Novel were born since in the late nineteenth century. The influence of the western literature is significantly distinguished in early periods of Assamese novel. Nearly hundred and thirty years ago in the ‘Jonaki era’, different Assamese novelist tried their hands in contributing creation of the Assamese Novel. Among of those Padmanath Gohainbaruah, Laximinath Bezbarua, Rajanikanta Bodoloi was pioneer of the Assamese novel. Before independence, the main trend of Assamese novels was based on historical novel. After the 2nd World war and Independence of India, Assamese novel developed through various genres, especially the genre of social novels become very stronger. New genres of novel like political novel, biographical novel, detective novel, mystery novel, mythological novel, science fiction etc were also written after independence. In twenty first century, most of the novels have been written in the above mention categories, although the two strong genres have influence in the present Assamese novels, the first genre in genre of historical novel and second it is biographical novel. It is notable that contemporary Assamese novel reflecting the various issue of Assamese society also. This paper is trying to discuss about present scenario of Assamese novel.

Newspapers have always played an indelible part in formation of a society through strengthening public opinion and spreading information about the who’s who of the larger society. From a broader outlook it can be said that newspaper is one of the medium that establishes the world in human mind. Though it faces tough competition from the electronic media and digital social media yet, from the growing number of newspapers in the region, it is seen that it still stands like a colossus. In Assam, newspaper journalism started in the 19th century with the publication of “Arunodoi Sanbad Patra”, a joint venture of three Christian Missionaries - Nathen Brown, Oliver T Cutter and Miles Bronson. From the time when “Arunodoi” was published in 1846 till date, many dailies, weeklies and periodicals have been published in Assam. Although some of these have been short lived yet, their contribution for the development of Assamese language, Assamese journalism and the Assamese society at large cannot be denied. Gradually with the change of time newspaper journalism also underwent changes and the basic formats of newspaper also changed. Soon competition between print media and electronic media started and the supremacy of one upon the other had become a topic of debate, which is still continuing and may continue for centuries. The newspapers have been taking the advantages from unhealthy competition among the language television channels. Here a course correction is also necessary where it has been observed that often Assamese language media concentrates on local politics, scandals, scams, intrigues, etc. but seldom inform the public about the important policy decisions or trends at the center or international arenas that threaten their vital interest. It is these percales that often comment as patriotism, amounting to shortage of analysis where public also show little patience to examine the matters. These results in lack of formation of public opinion on critical issues and sometimes under the influence of middle class vested interests, helps create a mass hysteria on certain issues. A strong but uninformed and prejudiced public opinion is formed without any divergence of news and without stimulating debate.

In this essay, we locate and explore new literary practices and expressions in Indian digital spaces such as SMS novel and social media narratives: poetry, flash fiction, twitterfiction which are not considered as electronic literature in India. The integration of technology and creativity is not a novel phenomenon in Indian literature where one can find the narrative tradition of ancient Indian literature which includes poetical words, paintings, and music, for instance, Pattachitra, Ragamala paintings andChitra Kavi. Similarly,new literary practices and expressions in the digital environment includeliterary artefacts such as interfaces, images, audio and videos. These works serve as a gateway to excit-ingelectronic literature in India.

The journey of the history of Assam is now at a crossroad. Different socio-political events have affected the infrastructure of the Assamese society. Hence the emergence of new issues in Assamese fiction is nothing but natural. As expected, the new Assamese fiction has been reflecting different issues relate to society, struggle of the subalterns, complexities of feminine experience, marginalization of women, revolt against the evils of the society, relation between individual and milieu, new aspects related with love and affection, new look on the inter-sexual relation, pain of isolation in the modern society etc. In this paper attempt has been made to explain the different issues raised by the new narrators of the Assamese fiction. It is expected that the analysis will explore some virgin areas about the issues of new Assamese fiction.

Digital media in the Indian perspective is vastly diverse from the other cultures of the world. The internet revolution comes with the challenge of selective language accessibility online, as well as limited language options used for the dissemination of information by digital media platforms. There is scarcity of languages in the digital space, as the internet is not exposed to all the languages of the world, thus restricting its reach to some of the most used global languages as well as the people using them. This means that a large number of people speaking other languages are left without using and benefitting from the various online platforms. India has a huge collection of languages. These languages are grouped as official, vernacular, local, classical and indigenous languages. These languages are used throughout the nation according to the literacy, knowledge, cultural inclination and preference of an individual. The relationship of the ordinary Indian and the digital space is a definite test when it comes to language diversity. While there has been a steady rise in the literacy of the tribes but the participation of the tribal scribes in mainstream media is almost insignificant. The tribal language print media circulation remains negligible or more-or less non-existent. The present paper studies the growth and existence of Santhali language in the digital media space. It also gives an insight into the digital media divide based on language and the entry of the digital media into the Indian indigenous language space.

The newspaper, representing a sub-variety of language, occupies a special place in our day-to-day information about the happenings around us .While bringing about a comparison of different genres it is found that the journalistic language has its own style and manner of presenting the news reports, informal articles, etc., in an organized way. Not only does it throw light upon the happenings of the surroundings as well as of the world, but also bears evidence to a variety of structure and style of language it is written in. Here, we would focus upon the developmental stages vis-à-vis the linguistic changes of Assamese newspapers since their inception.

Abstract Nihali is a unique language which is struggling for existence and is facing many challenges. Around 2000 villagers of Buldana district, Maharashtra, today use this language. From the previous generation, there are only four to five aged persons who can remember the old words, idioms, and phrases of the language exactly. They are the only surviving resource available to us today. The language, which once was very rich and known for its uniqueness, Ow is striving for its existence. The coming generations are getting away from their roots and are under various influences which are marring the survival of the language. Globalization, liberalization, and privatization led this language rapidly towards endangered status. UNESCO code for its endangered status is ISO-639-3. The paper intends to focus on the life and culture of the Nihals in short. It highlights various reasons and challenges before the language and tries to put forward some solutions to them. ACM Transactions on Asian and Low-Resource Language Information Processing

This article aims to understand different transliteration behaviors of Romanized Assamese text on social media. Assamese, a language that belongs to the Indo-Aryan language family, is also among the 22 scheduled languages in India. With the increasing popularity of social media in India and also the common use of the English Qwerty keyboard, Indian users on social media express themselves in their native languages, but using the Roman/Latin script. Unlike some other popular South Asian languages (say Pinyin for Chinese), Indian languages do not have a common standard romanization convention for writing on social media platforms. Assamese and English are two very different orthographical languages. Thus, considering both orthographic and phonemic characteristics of the language, this study tries to explain how Assamese vowels, vowel diacritics, and consonants are represented in Roman transliterated form. From a dataset of romanized Assamese social media texts collected from three popular social media sites: (Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly known as Twitter)), 1 we have manually labeled them with their native Assamese script. A comparison analysis is also carried out between the transliterated Assamese social media texts with six different Assamese romanization schemes that reflect how Assamese users on social media do not adhere to any fixed romanization scheme. We have built three separate character-level transliteration models from our dataset. One using a traditional phrase-based statistical machine transliteration model, (1) PBSMT model and two separate neural transliteration models, (2) BiLSTM neural seq2seq model with attention, and (3) Neural transformer model. A thorough error analysis has been performed on the transliteration result obtained from the three state-of-the-art models mentioned above. This may help to build a more robust machine transliteration system for the Assamese social media domain in the future. Finally, an attention analysis experiment is also carried out with the help of attention weight scores taken from the character-level BiLSTM neural seq2seq transliteration model built from our dataset.

BEIJING (AP) — A military history buff in China appears to have made an alarming discovery after picking up four discarded books for less than $1 at a neighborhood recycling station: They were confidential military documents.

The country’s Ministry of State Security told the story in a social media post on Thursday, praising the retired man for calling a hotline to report the incident. It identified him only by his family name, Zhang, and did not say what the documents were about.

“Mr. Zhang thought to himself that he had ‘bought’ the country’s military secrets and brought them home,” the post reads, “but if someone with ulterior motives were to buy them, the consequences would be unimaginable!”

The post, which was reposted on at least two popular Chinese news websites, was the latest in a series by the powerful state security agency that appears to be trying to draw in new audiences with dramatic stories. Some have been told in comic-book style.

The campaign seems designed to raise awareness of the importance of national security at a time when confrontation with the U.S. is rising and both countries are increasingly worried about the possible theft or transfer of confidential and secret information.

The post describes Zhang as a former employee of a state-owned company who likes to collect military newspapers and periodicals. It says he found two bags of new books at the recycling station and paid 6 yuan (about 85 cents) for four of them.

State security agents rushed to the station after Zhang reported what had happened, the post says. After an investigation, they found that two military employees charged with shredding more than 200 books instead got rid of them by selling them to a recycling center as paper waste — 30 kilograms (65 pounds) in all — for about 20 yuan ($2.75).

The agents seized the books and the military has closed loopholes in the handling of such material, the post says.

China’s opaque state security bodies and legal system often make it difficult to tell what is considered a state secret.

Chinese and foreign consultancies operating within the country have been placed under investigation for possessing or sharing information about the economy in an apparent broadening of the definition of a state secret in recent years.

Surgeon General: Why I’m Calling for a Warning Label on Social Media Platforms

One of the most important lessons I learned in medical school was that in an emergency, you don’t have the luxury to wait for perfect information. You assess the available facts, you use your best judgment, and you act quickly.

The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours . Additionally, nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies.

It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe. Evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior. When asked if a warning from the surgeon general would prompt them to limit or monitor their children’s social media use, 76 percent of people in one recent survey of Latino parents said yes.

To be clear, a warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people. The advisory I issued a year ago about social media and young people’s mental health included specific recommendations for policymakers, platforms and the public to make social media safer for kids. Such measures, which already have strong bipartisan support, remain the priority.

Legislation from Congress should shield young people from online harassment, abuse and exploitation and from exposure to extreme violence and sexual content that too often appears in algorithm-driven feeds. The measures should prevent platforms from collecting sensitive data from children and should restrict the use of features like push notifications, autoplay and infinite scroll, which prey on developing brains and contribute to excessive use.

Additionally, companies must be required to share all of their data on health effects with independent scientists and the public — currently they do not — and allow independent safety audits. While the platforms claim they are making their products safer, Americans need more than words. We need proof.

US Surgeon General Can’t Even Convince Himself That Social Media Warning Labels Are a Good Idea

As U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy attempted to advocate for warning labels on social media, he made a stronger case against the practice.

In a New York Times guest essay published on Monday, Murthy plead Congress to issue warning labels on social media, similar to those that appear on tobacco products, notifying parents against the negative effects the platforms can have on adolescents. However, as the op-ed continues, the argument shifts away from the effectiveness of labels and in favor of larger solutions — and it’s a far more convincing case.

Murthy first acknowledges the mental health crisis seen in young people, especially those who are social media users. It’s a valid point and a strong foundation for a call to action. The Surgeon General compares the issue to more tangible health concerns like tobacco use or car crashes. The latter further sets up a fine analogy by way of warning labels, which Murthy says helped reduce the use of tobacco products.

“Evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior,” Murthy writes.

Yet, the similarities seem to end there. Murthy never offers an example of how his proposed labels would look, which is especially nebulous considering the warnings would be for parents rather than the adolescent users. Surgeon General warnings on a pack of cigarettes, for example, are seen by those smoking them, and that’s who the message is for.

However, a warning on social media might not be seen by parents or guardians who aren’t on the same platforms as their children. Further, it’s unclear where and how the label would show up. Would it appear when someone downloads an app? Would it appear every time someone loads the platform? And would it appear for all users, including adults without children? It seems Murthy is asking for something without knowing exactly what the something is. That, or he hasn’t taken the time to illuminate those he’s trying to convince on the details of his plan.

And the stats he boasts regarding the effectiveness of tobacco product warnings don’t translate to ones for social media.

“When asked if a warning from the surgeon general would prompt them to limit or monitor their children’s social media use, 76 percent of people in one recent survey of Latino parents said yes,” he says, providing the only solid figure for such a use case. It hardly tells anyone how parents as a whole might respond.

The Surgeon General’s public health comparisons continue while further moving away from his original argument for warning labels.

“There is no seatbelt for parents to click, no helmet to snap in place, no assurance that trusted experts have investigated and ensured that these platforms are safe for our kids,” Murthy notes.

The line underscores where the similarities between a mental health crisis worsened by social media and something like car safety start and end. Both pose serious public health concerns and need to be addressed. The problem is they cannot be addressed in exactly the same ways.

Murthy makes this evident himself in his emotional pleas, putting desperate parents at the center of his ask.

“One of the worst things for a parent is to know your children are in danger yet be unable to do anything about it,” he writes. “That is how parents tell me they feel when it comes to social media — helpless and alone in the face of toxic content and hidden harms.”

Murthy continues, detailing the heartbreaking story of a diligent mother who nonetheless lost her child to suicide after enduring online bullying. This mother seemed to do everything right, “monitoring her daughter’s accounts and phone daily,” in the Surgeon General’s own words.

What, then, would a warning label provide other than a condescending reminder of the anxieties already plaguing this mother?

“As a father of a 6- and a 7-year-old who have already asked about social media, I worry about how my wife and I will know when to let them have accounts,” Murthy adds, admitting his own limitations. “How will we monitor their activity, given the increasingly sophisticated techniques for concealing it? How will we know if our children are being exposed to harmful content or dangerous people? It’s no wonder that when it comes to managing social media for their kids, so many parents are feeling stress and anxiety — and even shame.”

This is not to disparage Murthy or the mother he highlights, nor any other parent struggling to contend with the dangers of social media. But if the person hoping to issue the warning doesn’t have the answers, how will any other parents fare in the face of a mere label?

Not far into his guest essay, Murthy emphasizes the need for other solutions as well, namely legislation. Here, the Surgeon General is not only more convincing, but he seems more passionate as well, possibly because those were his first arguments.

“The advisory I issued a year ago about social media and young people’s mental health included specific recommendations for policymakers, platforms and the public to make social media safer for kids,” he notes in the New York Times op-ed. “Such measures, which already have strong bipartisan support, remain the priority.”

It feels as though the warning labels are a last-ditch effort after seeing little to no action following Murthy’s first recommendation. With that, it’s easy to see why the Surgeon General’s warning label plea to Congress feels so meek. It is. And rather than focusing on Murthy’s latest argument on how to respond to the negative impact of social media on children, we should revisit Murthy’s original arguments on the matter.

The U.S. Surgeon General called for social media companies to be required to use safety warning labels in a New York Times opinion essay published Monday.

Citing research that shows social media could be negatively impacting youth mental health , Dr. Vivek H. Murthy said a surgeon general's warning on social media platforms, similar to those on tobacco and alcohol products, could raise awareness for parents about the potential harm of the platforms.

"One of the worst things for a parent is to know your children are in danger yet be unable to do anything about it," Murthy wrote. "That is how parents tell me they feel when it comes to social media — helpless and alone in the face of toxic content and hidden harms."

NetChoice , a trade organization representing some social media companies, said in a statement shared with USA TODAY that the responsibility should be on the parents to protect their children's mental health, not the government or tech companies.

Research shows social media could come with benefit and harm

Murthy said social media is a major factor in the mental health crisis among young people, which he called "an emergency."

Social media has become nearly ubiquitous among youth. The  2023 U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on Social Media and Youth Mental Health  found that nearly  95% of youth aged 13 to 17 use a social media platform , with more than a third saying they use it "almost constantly."

The advisory concluded that more research is needed to fully understand the impacts of social media. But it showed there are some benefits and "ample indicators that social media can also have a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents."

Potential benefits identified in the advisory were community, connection and self expression. It also stated that social media can support mental health of LGBTQ youth to help develop their identities. Additionally, seven out of 10 girls of color reported encountering identity-affirming content related to race on social media, the advisory stated.

Potential harms of using social media included greater risk of suffering from depression and anxiety. Some studies also showed greater risk of negative health outcomes for adolescents girls including disordered eating and poor sleep.

Murthy praises dairy recall, Boeing response as examples of swift action

In the NYT letter, Murthy pointed to the F.A.A.'s swift grounding of Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes after a door plug came off mid-flight earlier this year and widespread recalls of cheese products due to risk of listeria contamination .

"Why is it that we have failed to respond to the harms of social media when they are no less urgent or widespread than those posed by unsafe cars, planes or food?," Murthy wrote. "These harms are not a failure of willpower and parenting; they are the consequence of unleashing powerful technology without adequate safety measures, transparency or accountability."

Several state bills seeking to limit youth access to social media have been passed by legislatures but blocked in court. Those lawsuits were often brought by NetChoice.

NetChoice vice president and general counsel Carl Szabo said in a statement that the onus is on parents to protect their children from harm online.

"A warning label oversimplifies this issue, and it is a simplistic way to approach this that assumes that every child is the exact same. In reality, every child is different and struggles with their own challenges," Szabo said. "Parents and guardians are the most appropriately situated to handle these unique needs of their children—not the government or tech companies."
