How to win scholarships for graduate students

As someone who has already gone through the process of earning your undergraduate degree, you probably have some experience with applying for scholarships. However, students applying for graduate scholarships would do well to emphasize a few different points to help ensure successful applications.

Graduate students typically have a more specific idea of their future career goals than undergraduate students. Make sure to emphasize this in your application and include all the particular things you hope to accomplish. Students will generally pay for graduate school using a few different funding sources. The most common sources are private scholarships, need-based financial aid and grants, and university-specific scholarships.

Private graduate school scholarships

There some great private organizations that offer scholarships for students pursuing their masters or doctoral degrees! These scholarships support graduate students of all stripes including medical school students, law school students, business school students, masters students, and doctoral students!

Need-based financial aid for grad school

Need-based financial aid is another important way to pay for graduate school. For graduate school, need-based aid can include both grants (that don’t need to be repaid) and student loans (that do need to be repaid).

For need-based graduate school financial aid, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA . This allows students to be considered for both need-based grants and federal student loans. Some colleges may also require additional forms, so always check with your specific graduate program for more details about their financial aid process.

Many colleges may also require students to submit the CSS Profile , which is a financial aid application that is hosted by the College Board. The CSS Profile is how students can access institutional financial aid from the universities.

Minorities have a better chance to get a scholarship.

While it is true that there are tons of scholarships made available specifically to students of minority and special populations, that doesn’t mean you need to be a minority to get a scholarship.

There are tons of scholarships available to all, and a majority of them still go to Caucasian students. In fact, minorities only receive 28% of available scholarships. This means Caucasians have a significantly higher chance of receiving a scholarship, especially from private entities.

I shouldn’t bother to apply because there’s too much competition.

Many people might think they shouldn’t bother applying for any scholarships because there’s way too much competition. They feel like their chances are low because many others are vying for the same scholarships they are. If you think this way, you might be glad to know that this isn’t entirely true.

Yes, there certainly is a lot of competition, at least when it comes to scholarships that don’t have many requirements. Many will apply for scholarships that don’t need a ton of supporting documents, difficult applications, recommendations, personal statements, or intense essays. If you’re willing to put in the extra work and go through the rigorous application requirements, you might find that there may be far less competition than you originally thought. Stringent requirements weed out applicants who are just looking for a quick buck.

My grades need to be perfect.

It’s easy to assume that to get a scholarship, you need to have perfect grades. And yes, that might be the case when you’re applying for academic or merit scholarships. The government does provide some funding for scholarships. However, these government grants only count for a small portion. Most funding comes from institutions and private entities . I have to pay to get a scholarship.

There are several types of graduate school scholarships that you can apply for if you’re looking for funding. These range from institutional grad school fellowships offered by your school, to hyper-competitive, national, full-ride scholarships, to smaller, more specific graduate school scholarships with stricter eligibility criteria. We’ll go over everything you need to know about each scholarship type below.

School-Specific Scholarships

The simplest route to earning scholarships for graduate school is often through the actual graduate institutions that you’re applying for. Programs will have funding set aside to help attract students; most schools offer special graduate school grants and scholarships for particularly promising applicants.

For example, here’s a list of internal need and merit-based funding sources for applicants to Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health . As you can see on their website, to be considered for funding sources, you must file a FAFSA. However, additional materials are not necessary.

If you are interested in receiving funding from your school, check if you need to submit additional application materials. Most schools will require the FAFSA, but they may not require anything else. However, some institutional graduate school scholarships require applicants to submit additional essays, recommendations, or other materials.

Some schools will have funding sources they don’t even list online. In this case, you’ll just receive a funding offer when you are accepted if the program has decided to offer you money to entice you into their program!

Major National/International Full-Ride Scholarships

There are several national or international scholarships for graduate school. You’ve probably heard of some of them, like the Rhodes scholarship, Fulbright grants, and National Science Foundation graduate school fellowships. But there are also others, like the Marshall scholarship, the Endeavor program (for study in Australia), the Mitchell scholarship (for study in Ireland), and the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans (for immigrants and children of immigrants).

Because of the limited number of these types of scholarships available and their very high value, they tend to be ultra-competitive.  They typically go to students who have excelled in their undergraduate careers.

If you’re interested in one of these graduate school scholarships, you’ll need to start thinking about them very early on your application process. Applications are often due well before graduate school applications, frequently in October or September! So you need to know that you will be applying for these scholarships well in advance.

If you’re still an undergraduate, your school may actually need to nominate you for the scholarship. In this case, you’ll likely fill out a preliminary application that you send to your school, and they’ll then choose who they would like to nominate based on the preliminary applications they receive.

The nice part of school nomination is that you will usually get some additional resources and help to work on your application if you do get nominated by your school. You’ll most likely get tailored attention and tips for honing your application and doing well on interviews, because it looks great for your undergraduate institution if you get one of these prestigious graduate school fellowships!

Targeted Scholarships

There are also smaller, more targeted grad school scholarships that offer supplementary funding to students who meet specific eligibility requirements. These are typically sponsored by nonprofits, corporations, membership organizations, and/or the bequests of individuals. (Side note: Institutional fellowships are also often funded by bequests).

Most of these scholarships are smaller awards, but that doesn’t mean they don’t add up! A couple of $5,000-$10,000 scholarships for grad school can go a long way towards your tuition and fees for the year, especially at a public institution.

There are several different types of outside graduate school scholarships you might be eligible for:

• Diversity scholarships: Lots of scholarships aim to increase the number of diverse professionals in a particular field or in higher education more generally. To that end, there are lots of funds specifically for women, minorities, the disabled, LGBTQ individuals, and so on. Some funds will give scholarships to any diverse applicant, while others are focused on a specific facet of diversity, like a particular ethnicity or gender identity.
• Group membership scholarships: There are also lots of grad school scholarships for members of a specific group. Honor societies, sororities and fraternities, professional associations and religious organizations are just a few of the groups that might offer scholarships! Local community groups also often sponsor scholarships for people from their specific town or community. If you are a member of any professional, academic, social, service, or religious group (or eligible to join one), check and see if they have any graduate school scholarship offerings!
• Discipline-specific: You can also find many grad school scholarships for particular areas of study. There is more funding available for STEM fields than for the arts or the humanities, but there are at least a few scholarships for pretty much every discipline! There’s also a good chunk of grants for graduate school for particular professional degrees—e.g. MBAs, MPHs, MEds, MSWs, etc.
• Miscellaneous: Beyond the three main groups identified above, there are also additional scholarships for grad school with either unusual application procedures or very specific eligibility criteria. One example of this type is the Ayn Rand Institute essay scholarship , which is an essay contest on Atlas Shrugged open to 12th-graders, college students, and graduate students. Another example is the Valeant Dermatology Aspire Higher scholarship program, which awards scholarships to people who have been treated for a dermatological condition with prescription medication.

How to Find Scholarships for Grad School: 3 Methods

There are several methods you might use to look for scholarships for graduate school. I advise deploying several different strategies to cast the widest net possible and find the best grad school scholarships for you.

Graduate Program Websites

One of the first things to do in your quest for scholarships and grants for graduate school is check the websites of the programs that you are applying for. Their financial aid and funding pages will help you figure out what school-specific graduate school scholarships you might be eligible for, and if you need to send additional information to apply for them. This is critical information since most scholarships for grad school do come through institutional funding.

In addition to providing information on institutional funding, these pages can also be a great way to find external graduate school scholarships that aren’t offered by the school. Many grad programs have a page or list of relevant external funding programs that applicants can apply for.

Let’s return to our Columbia School of Public Health example. On their website, in addition to a listing of their internal funding sources, they also provide a list of external funding sources for which applicants may be eligible . A quick scan of this list reveals lots of grad school scholarships relevant to particular areas of public health.

The nice thing about looking at these lists assembled on grad school program websites is that they come pre-selected for relevance. Of course, not all the scholarships will apply to all the students, but you won’t have to scroll through pages of STEM scholarships if you’re looking for funding for your Master’s in Education.

Scholarship Finders and Lists

There are also many websites specifically dedicated to collecting information on a whole bunch of scholarships in one place, either in a database or a list. A lot of scholarship finders are primarily focused on undergraduate funding sources, but the ones that have information on graduate school scholarships can be helpful. These websites allow you to look at tons of scholarships at once. You can sometimes filter the scholarships by various criteria, making the search even easier.

One drawback is that there can be outdated information —sometimes some scholarships listed will have incorrect award amounts, broken links, incorrect due dates, or won’t even be offered anymore! Also, some scholarship search websites require you to register to use them. Personally, I’m leery of these—they ask for your e-mail claiming they’ll send you useful scholarship results, but they’ll often end up sending you spam.

Scholarship finders and compilation lists are a useful resource, just be sure to double-check any information on the official website(s) for the scholarship(s) of interest. Here are some of the most useful grad school scholarship finders and some tips on how to best use them.

Peterson’s is probably the most robust search engine for grad school scholarships out there. There are over 2,300 scholarships in their database for full-time graduate students, and you can filter scholarships by a huge variety of criteria.

The main drawback is that filters overlap. What do I mean by this? If I filter by, say, “Illinois” as my state of residence and “Roman Catholic” as my religion, the database pulls up scholarships for Illinois Roman Catholics (with 0 results) instead of scholarships for Illinois residents and scholarships for Roman Catholics. So you’ll have to run your filtered searches separately to get the widest possible spread of scholarships that you are eligible for.

BestMastersDegrees.Com

This website offers a list of 100 scholarships specifically for master’s degrees. It was compiled in 2015, so most of the information is still current. The list is segmented by academic field, making it fairly easy to navigate and find scholarships that actually apply to you.

Scholarships.Com

Scholarships.Com offers a pretty robust list of graduate school scholarships of all kinds. The main disadvantage is that they seem to be listed only in alphabetical order, which isn’t very helpful if you are looking for a specific scholarship type. I recommend doing a control+F search with whatever types of scholarships you think might apply to you to sift through the list more easily.

GoGrad offers extensive lists in several specific graduate school scholarship categories— MBA scholarships, scholarships for women, scholarships for military veterans, and scholarships for LGBTQ individuals. These lists are further subdivided into subcategories. For example, the list of awards and grants for graduate school for veterans is further subdivided into general scholarships for veterans, scholarships for disabled veterans, and scholarships for spouses and dependents of veterans.

This resource obviously isn’t very useful to you if you don’t fall into one of GoGrad’s targeted categories, but it’s very helpful if you do.

A good way to get the inside scoop on grad school scholarships is to ask people in the know. Professors you know in your area of interest may be able to direct you to relevant scholarships and grants for graduate school. They often know what’s going in the funding arena for their discipline.

Another thing to do is ask graduate students you know! Grad students in your area of study might know of discipline-specific scholarships. But other grad students who looked for various sources of outside funding may also be able to point you in the right direction. Just be tactful; don’t just out and out demand how your acquaintances are paying for grad school! You can just ask them if they encountered any grad school scholarships you might be eligible for during their application process.

Consider Eligibility

As you might imagine, it’s critical that you are actually eligible for any scholarships that you apply for. So be sure to closely read the eligibility requirements for any scholarship you are interested in. You don’t want to create a whole application just to realize that the scholarship is only for students who are already enrolled in a program!

But beyond that, eligibility can actually guide you towards which scholarships to apply for. The more specific the eligibility requirements for a scholarship, the less competition there’s likely to be! A general STEM scholarship will have tons of applicants. A STEM scholarship for Hispanic and Latinx applicants will have fewer applicants. And a STEM scholarship for Hispanic and Latinx applicants who want to work in the agricultural industry will have even fewer! So if you can find graduate school scholarships with specific eligibility requirements that you quality for, it’s in your best interest to apply for those.

Strategically Choose Need vs. Merit-Based Scholarships

Graduate school scholarships do not all have the same selection criteria. In general, scholarship selection criteria is primarily need-based, primarily merit-based (whether that merit is academic, related to community service, or something else) or a combination of the two. So when you do choose which awards to apply for, consider your finances.

Your financial situation can be assessed by scholarship committees through a number of ways. They often consider your current income and assets, your savings level, and other funding you’ve already received towards your studies. If you have lots of savings, a high-paying job, or other robust funding sources, you probably don’t have a great shot at grad school scholarships focused primarily on financial need. In this case, it makes more sense to focus your efforts on merit-based scholarships for graduate school. For need-and-merit based scholarships, decide on a case-by-case basis. If you don’t have much need but you really fulfill the merit criteria, take a shot!

However, if you can demonstrate financial need, you can (and should!) apply to at least some scholarships with a need-based component. This is especially salient if your academic record is not as strong so you aren’t as compelling a candidate for academic merit scholarships.

Can You Commit to Strings-Attached Funding?

There are a number of funding programs that involve making some kind of post-graduation work commitment in return for the money. For example, the Jewish Community Centers of North America Graduate Scholarship Program offers $10,000/yr for up to two years to graduate students who can commit to work at a JCC for at least two years post-graduation. Another example is the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship . This program funds tuition and gives a stipend to train individuals with STEM backgrounds as secondary-school teachers. In return, fellows commit to teach in a high-need school district in a designated area for at least three years.

With these types of funding arrangements, you usually have to pay the money back if you can’t fulfill the professional commitment (barring extreme extenuating circumstances). So don’t apply if you aren’t confident that you can hold up your end of the bargain!

Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

If you can, it’s best to apply for a variety of graduate school scholarships. Instead of only applying to only one super-competitive, high-funding grant or fellowship program and nothing else, choose a portfolio of scholarships with a variety of eligibility and selection criteria, award amounts, and effort levels. Filing a healthy variety of scholarship applications increases the chances that you’ll net some level of funding from the process. It’s less risky than playing an all-or-nothing game by filling out a single application for something like a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship.

Trying for some major awards is great. But don’t underestimate the value of applying to smaller, less competitive scholarships that you’re very qualified for. Think of it this way: a couple of $5,000 awards gets you a lot further than one rejected application for $90,000.

So choose some with quick and easy applications for smaller amounts, some more general scholarships, some with specific eligibility criteria, and some very competitive scholarships worth lots of cash! This will cover all your bases and increase your chances of being a winner in the grad school scholarships game.

Reuse and Recycle When Possible

It’s a great idea to apply to scholarships for which you can reasonably re-use some of your graduate school application materials (or other scholarship materials). Don’t force it—if the application wants an essay about community service, don’t try to re-use one about your academic accomplishments! But when you can recycle some recommendations and essays for multiple scholarships with just a few tweaks, you’ll get a higher potential for payoff with just a little extra work.

Make Sure Deadlines Work for You

While it’s not the most critical part of selecting scholarships, do consider deadlines. Especially consider how your scholarship deadlines match up with your grad school application deadlines. You want to make sure you have enough time to complete everything without scrambling or doing a half-baked job because you’re pressed for time. Try to select applications for scholarships and grants for graduate school that you can complete either before grad school application season is in full swing or after most of your grad school applications are complete.

Once you’ve decided which scholarships to apply for, the following five tips will help your graduate school scholarship application process go smoothly.

Make a Chart to Keep Track of Everything

If you’ve read my other articles, you may be aware that I am a strong proponent of making charts to keep track of tasks. This is also a great strategy for scholarship applications! You can list each of your scholarships on one side of the chart, and all of the requirements on the other. Include goal dates and the current status of each task. Referring to your chart often will help you know what you need to get done on a week-by-week basis and keep you on track to complete all the different pieces of the scholarship without scrambling!

Reach Out to People Who’ve Won Before

If you can, it’s a great idea to talk to people who’ve previously won the scholarships you’re interested in. They can give you tips on how they structured the various parts of their application, what they emphasized, and anything else you want to know!

Of course, if you personally know someone who won, this is pretty easy to accomplish. Otherwise, you may also be able to find someone who won through mutual friends and acquaintances. Lots of scholarships post lists of past winners. Try to leverage any common connections you might have. For example, if any former recipients went to your undergraduate institution or are from your hometown, you might have a mutual acquaintance. At the very least, they may be more receptive to cold contact.

Tailor Your Applications to the Selection Criteria

The point of a scholarship application is, in general, to show how great you are. However, there are usually specific things about your greatness that scholarship committees want to know. To that end, most scholarship websites will give you at least some guidance as to what the scholarship selection criteria are.

When you compile your application materials, keep those selection criteria in mind! I used to copy and paste the criteria at the top of my document when I was writing scholarship application essays to help me make sure that I was closely addressing what the committee was looking for. Making sure that you’re demonstrating the specific qualities a particular scholarship is looking for in all parts of your application definitely increases your chances of success.

Enlist a Second Set of Eyes

Get someone else (or several someones) to look at your application materials before you submit them. Frankly, this is good practice whenever you’re working on something important. A pair of fresh eyes will see errors or points of confusion that you can’t.  You might even have the selection criteria at hand so they can give you more tailored feedback as to how you might improve your application.

Give Yourself Some Buffer

Don’t leave everything for the last minute! Request recommendations and transcripts early. Additionally, try to have your application materials submitted in advance of the deadline in case there are technical or other issues.

This is especially true when you need to mail in an application packet. (It’s becoming rarer, but it still happens!) The last thing you want is for your application to be lost in the mail!

Why stop at a bachelor’s degree when you can earn a master’s? While taking the master’s degree path can mean more student loans, keep in mind that it will open more doors of opportunity! Your bachelor’s degree may be enough to get inside the door, but a master’s degree will get you a seat at the table.

Here’s proof: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs that require a master’s degree will rise by about 17% between 2016 and 2026 . Indeed, a master’s degree brings with it numerous benefits , particularly in differentiating yourself from the competition and being a valued employee.

First and foremost, your earnings potential will likely increase.

On average, employees with a master’s degree earn more than 20 percent more than employees with a bachelor’s degree. According to the National Center for Education Statistics , workers with a bachelor’s degree earn $61,600, while master’s degree holders earn $74,600. Both figures represent average annual salaries.

Throughout their careers, the former will earn $2.27 million, while the latter can earn up to $3.65 million. Of course, there are differences in the average annual salary earned between professions. For example, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers can earn between $101,000 and $107,000 annually.

Beyond the monetary benefits, earning a master’s degree will also result in a more specialized knowledge in your field. You may even introduce innovations in the course of your studies, thesis presentation, and fieldwork. Indeed, you have every opportunity to make a difference in the world! 

With a master’s degree, your transition from rank-and-file employee to a senior position will be easier, perhaps faster.

This is because many organizations, from for-profit corporations to non-profit charities, recognize the knowledge and skill behind a master’s degree. Most of these organizations prefer employees with master’s degrees, too, especially in the healthcare, engineering, and education industries.

While you’re in the master’s degree program, your research, analysis, and communication skills will also be challenged and polished. You will be better at critical thinking and problem solving as you pursue life-long learning.

Student loan debt has soared to a record high of $1.75 trillion , and you may well still be paying for your student loans. You’re reluctant about getting a master’s degree because it can mean more debt.

The cost of higher education has also rapidly risen, according to the study The Price of Graduate and Professional School – How Much Students Pay . In 2021-2022, for example, the average published tuition and fees for students enrolled in a master’s degree program ranged between $12,596 (public universities) and $28,017 (private non-profit institutions). These amounts are exclusive of other expenses, such as room and board, travel, and miscellaneous costs. 

The actual tuition and fees vary widely, too, depending on the university.

At Harvard Graduate School of Education , part-time students pay $30,051, while full-time students pay $60,102 for the 2024-2025 academic year. The amount doesn’t include the $5,794 health insurance fees as well as the costs for rent, utilities, food, books and supplies, personal expenses, and technology expenses, among others.

Your student and personal debts don’t have to be as large as you dreaded it because scholarships are available and aplenty. Of course, scholarships are monetary support provided to students without the expectation of repayment, not even a single cent.

But like grants, there are eligibility requirements and other conditions attached to scholarships. National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

While most scholarships come with no strings attached, particularly repayment in dollars, the National Health Service Corps Scholarship requires a two-year to four-year service commitment. However scholars are provided with financial support for full-time studies for up to four years, the support of which includes tuition and eligible fees, reasonable educational costs, and monthly stipends. Every year, the Bureau of Health Professions chooses between 100 and 200 students in a wide range of healthcare programs as scholars.

Chrysalis Scholarship

This scholarship is designed for anyone who participated in a Chrysalis After-School program or served as a GirlPower Peer Mentor and is enrolled in a degree program. Soros Fellowships for New Americans

• Amount: Up to $90,000 for the duration of the scholarship

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans restrict scholarship awarding to children of naturalized citizens, immigrants, DACA recipients, and green card holders attending master’s degree programs in accredited US graduate schools.

Eligibility requirements include being born outside of the United States, at least 30 years old, with a four-year bachelor’s degree, and in their first or second year of master’s studies. Applicants should also show creative initiative, commitment to the values enshrined in the US Constitution, and sustained accomplishment.

Inger Lawrence – M.R. Bauer Foundation Nursing Studies Scholarship

The National Council of Jewish Women, LA, is strongly committed to advancing economic justice for women and their families. In addition to promoting economic security and workplace dignity, the organization also promotes continuing education. 

The M.R. Bauer Foundation Nursing Studies Scholarship is designed for women enrolled in Nursing degree programs in the Greater Los Angeles and the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Applicants who have completed part of the requisite units toward their degree are given top priority. 

Kathern F. Gruber Scholarship

• Amount: $2,000

The Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) advocates for the betterment of sight-deaf veterans through advocacy, membership, communication, and peer-inspired self-reliance. Its Gruber scholarship program is awarded based on merit and evaluated by a committee.

There are five recipients per cycle and they can re-apply up to four times if they are related to blind and low vision veterans, and have already been accepted for admission or already enrolled at an accredited higher education institution.

Joe Beirne Scholarship Program

The Joe Beirne Scholarship Program is offered by the IUE-CWA, which has over 150,000 active members and embodies workers’ collective strength and solidarity across various industries. Garden State Master’s Counseling Initiative Fellowship

AWRA Richard A. Herbert Memorial Scholarship

AWRA offers the Richard A. Herbert Memorial Scholarship to promote multidisciplinary water resources education, management, and research. Graduate applicants are evaluated based on the quality of their academic/research performance and its relevance to water resources. Additional requirements include three signed letters of recommendation and a resume or CV.

Buckingham Memorial Scholarship

• Amount: $5,000

Established in 1956, the Air Traffic Control Association Inc. is dedicated to advancing air traffic control science and ensuring a safe flight environment. Among its scholarship opportunities for graduate students is the Buckingham Memorial Scholarship, open to the children, stepchildren, and grandchildren of air traffic control specialists.

Students who wish to apply must submit two recommendation letters, a transcript, an essay of no more than 500 words, and documentation of their US citizenship. 

Polish Arts Club of Buffalo Inc. Scholarship

ONS Foundation Research Grant

Hyman P. Moldover Scholarship for Communal Service

IFMA Foundation Scholarship

The IFMA Foundation scholarship program is one of the oldest programs for students enrolled in Facility Management degrees and other closely related areas. In addition to the cash aid, winners will also receive an all-expenses-paid attendance at the World Workplace Conference and Expo. Sandra West ALS Foundation Scholarship

The Sandra West ALS Foundation was founded by Sandy West, a Christian mother of three who was diagnosed with ALS in 2022. The foundation provides scholarships to deserving students affected by ALS, promoting hope and resilience and ensuring education transcends disease challenges.

Niche No Essay Scholarship

The $25,000 Niche “No Essay” Scholarship is not a competition based on academic intelligence. Instead, it chooses its winners by random drawing. Applicants are not required to pay anything to submit their scholarship application. Phillip L. Turner Fire Protection Scholarship

Offered by the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers’ Association, a non-profit trade association, the Phillip L. Turner Fire Protection Scholarship caters to graduate students majoring in fire protection engineering and administration.

Applicants must be full-time students in an accredited US or Canadian college or university. Additional requirements include academic transcripts, a 1,000-word essay, and a letter of recommendation. 

Musser Fellowship in Entrepreneurial Studies

The Musser Fellowship in Entrepreneurial Studies program provides financial support to full-time and part-time aspiring entrepreneurs at Penn State Great Valley. Applicants should be enrolled in a master’s program and pursuing at least 12 credits each semester with a 3.5 GPA.

The award covers tuition and fees, with unused portions refundable. Applicants must submit a resume, essay, and contact information for two references.

Cornaro Scholarship

• Amount: $3,500 

The Cornaro Scholarship is exclusively offered to the sorority’s honors graduates. It’s a competitive scholarship with the successful applicants required to present proof of their adherence to the sorority’s motto, as well as their values, leadership experience, and high academic achievements.

Only two scholars are approved every year, and they can apply the money toward their education-related expenses at any accredited university or college. Unsuccessful applicants can also resubmit their applications in succeeding years.

NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program

• Type of Scholarship: Semester-based (One-time, non-renewable)
• Amount: $10,000 for each sport season
• Deadline of Application: Spring application opens March 15, 2024, and ends June 7, 2024, at 5 p.m. ET.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship is awarded to the NCAA’s best student-athletes, and it’s awarded three times during the year. Every sports season, the panel awards 42 scholarships for men and women, divided evenly between the genders.

Applicants are assessed based on their academic and athletic achievements, as well as their community and campus involvement, demonstrated leadership, and volunteer activities.

It is also among the top awards for those interested in researching topics related to LGBTQIA+ issues. This scholarship aims to enhance public understanding of homosexuality and sexual orientation, reducing stress experienced by other genders.

Ayn Rand Institute Novel Essay Contest (Atlas Shrugged)

The Ayn Rand Institute is one of the leading organizations that promote Ayn Rand’s objectivist philosophy. Scholars receive several benefits, including the monetary consideration given every calendar year, daily allowance during summer tours, and reimbursement for travel costs between Washington, DC, and school.

Stokes Scholarship Program

Offered by the CIA, the Stokes Scholarship Program is among the most competitive and rewarding master’s scholarships. In addition to providing the recipient with up to $25,000 in tuition aid, allowances, and incidentals, the scholarship also offers guaranteed employment after graduation.

Scholars will also receive other benefits, including lodging and transportation reimbursement,  an annual salary of $49,659 – $59,653, a federal retirement fund, health insurance, and paid leaves.

Applicants must be of legal age and a U.S. or dual U.S. citizen planning to pursue at least nine credits per semester. A minimum baccalaureate GPA of 3.0 is required. They must be willing to move to the Washington, DC, area and complete security and medical evaluations.

Their adjusted gross annual household income (AGI) ceiling can be up to $120,000 or $50,000 if they haven’t been listed as a dependent for the previous tax year.

El Café Del Futuro Scholarship

Cafe Bustelo is offering scholarships to driven college students in the Latino community who are striving for better futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. Onsi Sawiris Scholarship

Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship

Zonta International sponsors the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship with women as the exclusive recipients. There are regional and international scholarships worth up to $8,000, and the amount can be used for tuition, books, and living expenses.

Women enrolled in a business or business-related program, either in a brick-and-mortar or online accredited university or college, can apply. Make Me Laugh Scholarship

The Make Me Laugh Scholarship by Unigo is a scholarship opportunity for comedians. In addition to helping them fund their college education, it allows them to share embarrassing but funny stories. There are no additional requirements other than being of legal age and a US resident and student.  

Hertz Fellowship

• Type of Scholarship: Annual (Renewable for up to five years)

The Hertz Fellowship chooses graduate students pursuing science and technology degrees whose bold ideas have the best potential to become game-changing solutions to society’s current issues. Fellows not only receive substantial funding but also receive lifelong professional support and become part of a connected community. 

Fellows choose from two options for getting their funding:

• Direct and exclusive funding from the Hertz Foundation, including full tuition equivalent, $38,000 in personal stipend for every nine months, and $5,000 annual stipend for fellows with dependent children

YIVO Institute of Jewish Research Fellowships

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is a leading institution preserving and studying East European Jewry’s history and culture. In addition to hosting renowned exhibitions, concerts, and lectures, the Institute also offers several graduate fellowship programs for master’s degree students.

Joseph Kremen Memorial Fellowship

This fellowship is offered to graduate students involved in the Eastern European Jewish theater, music, and arts, and the stipend can be used for research-related expenses. Applicants should send their curriculum vitae, two letters of support, and a research proposal by regular mail, email, or fax.

Fellowship in East European Jewish Literature

YIVO also administers the combined Vladimir and Pearl Heifetz Memorial Fellowship and the Vivian Lefsky Hort Memorial Fellowship, a scholarship for graduate students engaged in the study of Vladimir and Pearl Heifetz Memorial Fellowship and the Vivian Lefsky Hort Memorial Fellowship.

The stipend can be used within 2-3 months of research, as required in the terms, and the fellow will be required to give a public lecture.

Samuel and Flora Weiss Research Fellowship

The Samuel and Flora Weiss Research Fellowship is awarded to graduate students who are researching modern Polish-Jewish history, particularly the Holocaust period, Jewish-Polish relations, and Jewish contributions to Polish culture.

The fellow can spend the stipend on whatever expenses they deem fit during the 2-3 months of fellowship. The expectations include research conducted at the YIVO library and a public lecture in exchange for the stipend.

Theodore C. Sorensen Fellowship

• Amount: $3,600
• Deadline of Application: September 30, 2024

The Theodore Sorensen Research Fellowship is offered to graduate students enrolled in political science or journalism coursework in Massachusetts. Applicants should submit a complete application form, a brief proposal about the planned project and budget, a sample of their writing, curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation. Additional documents will not be accepted. 

The planned project should focus on political journalism, domestic policy, or press relations, among others, and use the resources from the JFK Library. The stipend can be used for educational and cost of living expenses.

APhA Student Scholarship

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation enables pharmacists to participate in research projects and programs that improve the quality of healthcare in the US Graduate students in pharmacy programs will find plenty of scholarship opportunities, including:

Fulbright Foreign Student Program

• Deadline of Application: Application window from February to October 8, 2024 year, 5 p.m. ET.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program that is administered by the US Department of State, the Fulbright Commissions/Foundations, and other partners, is offered in more than 160 countries. It covers the students’ tuition, required fees, and travel to the US for the entire duration of their study. While the eligibility requirements vary between countries, successful applicants are typically the best and brightest in their undergraduate classes.

Most fields of study, such as social science, engineering, and science and technology, are covered except for clinical studies, such as medicine and nursing. But, nursing administration and public health programs are permitted. 

NEF – Estelle Massey Osborne Scholarship

• Amount: Between $2,500 and $10,000
• Deadline of Application: Opens October 1, 2024 with a February 1, 5 deadline

The Nurses Educational Funds, Inc. (NEF) awards the Estelle Massey Osborne Scholarship to registered nurses enrolled in graduate nursing programs. Applicants should be African-Americans/Black, a member of a recognized professional nursing association, and in a full-time master’s degree program. The scholarships are based on academic excellence, visionary goals, and recognized leadership potential.

TEACH Grant (Teacher Education Assistance for College & Higher Education)

• Amount: Up to $4,000 per year 
• Deadline of Application: October 4, 2024

The TEACH grant comes with a service-or-repay clause that applicants must carefully consider before submitting their applications. TEACh grantees must complete one four-year service obligation or, if the service obligation isn’t completed, repay the grant with interest (i.e., grant converted into loan). 

Every TEACH grantee must complete counseling for every year that they are on the federal aid program. TEACH grantees also sign a grant agreement.

Applicants must complete the FAFSA form, comply with the basic eligibility criteria for student federal aid programs, and be enrolled in a college or university participating in the TEACH Grant program. This is a selective program with applicants evaluated on their academic performance and potential. 

Buckfire & Buckfire, PC Law School Diversity Scholarship Program

• Amount: $2,000 
• Deadline of Application: October 1, 2024

Established in 2013 as part of Buckfire & Buckfire’s efforts to provide deserving law students financial support, the scholarship is specifically geared toward law students belonging to minorities (i.e., racial, ethnic and other types) or who have demonstrated commitment to diversity. Only one law student is chosen to receive the scholarship. 

Applicants must be US citizens, demonstrate exceptional academic performance in law school, and have completed one semester of classes, minimum. Application documents include a completed application form, a one-page essay on promoting ethnic diversity, and an official law school transcript.

AQHF Research Grants

• Deadline of Application: November 1, 2024

The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) awards the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) to its members who are pursuing a two-year master’s degree program. Applicants can be in any field of study, but they should have a cumulative 3.0 GPA at least and demonstrate a passion for horses.

AQHA also offers Career Path Scholarships for graduate students involved in the study of animal science, veterinary medicine, or journalism. In both scholarships, recipients are selected based on rigorous criteria, including financial need, academic achievement, community service, leadership potential, and involvement in AQHA.

Olivia James Traveling Fellowship

• Amount: $26,000

Administered by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), the Olivia James Traveling Fellowship is awarded to a single scholar for study- and travel-related expenses between July 1 of the award year and June 30 of the following year. Only applicants studying classics, architecture, archaeology, sculpture, and history of Near and Middle Eastern studies will be considered, and the merit-based selection process is among the most competitive in the industry.

Emphasis must be placed on the fact that field excavation projects aren’t covered in the scholarship. The money can be used for institutional overhead, administrative recovery costs, or indirect costs. Applicants should be AIA members for at least one year (graduate students) or two consecutive years and US citizens.

Ronald D. Lunceford Scholarship

• Deadline of Application: November 8, 2024

The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists Educational Foundation sponsors the Ronald D. Lunceford Scholarship, a grant for graduate students studying psychology, therapy/rehabilitation, or social services.

Applicants should be American citizens from an ethnic population, particularly of Black, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, Alaska Native, or Hispanic heritage, and affiliated with the sponsors.

American Association of University Women Career Development Grant

• Amount: $2,000–$20,000
• Deadline of Application: November 15, 2024

The Career Development Grants are female-specific scholarships, although preference is given to women pursuing their first graduate degree in non-traditional fields and to women of color. Women who are also in the process of reentering the workforce or changing careers, particularly in education, social sciences, and health and medical sciences, can also apply. 

The scholarship money can be used for tuition, fees, and books, as well as dependent care and travel expenses. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship or permanent residency, possessing an earned bachelor’s degree, and planning to enroll in a master’s degree program.

ACES Bill Walsh Scholarship

• Amount: $3,500

The Bill Walsh Scholarship is open to graduate students enrolled during the summer and fall term. It is awarded to the qualified individual regardless of the applicant’s field of study or major. Applicants should also demonstrate a passion and aptitude for news-related jobs, mainly copy editing.

American Association of University Women (or AAUW) – International Fellowships in USA for Women

• Amount: $20,000–$50,000

Established in 1917, the AAUW International Fellowships in USA for Women provides financial support for women enrolled full-time in master’s degree programs in the US but are neither US citizens nor permanent residents. Fellows must express their intention of returning to their home country and becoming leaders in academia, government, and business, among other fields. 

Applicants must possess the equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree and are chosen for the fellowship program based on their academic attainments and demonstrated commitment to the advancement of women and girls.

Fellows must devote themselves to their academic program of study on a full-time basis during their fellowship year. 

Reapplications among unsuccessful applicants are encouraged. 

Education Matters Scholarship

• Deadline of Application: November 30, 2024

Education Matters scholarship is another program funded by Unigo that gives chances to graduate students who are not academically competitive but want to pursue higher education.

This program only requires applicants to submit 250 words or less answering the question, “What would you say to someone who thinks education doesn’t matter or that college is a waste of time and money?” The best response will be awarded $5,000 towards their education. 

American Association of University Women Selected Professions Fellowship

• Amount: $20,000

Yet another notable AAUW scholarship program is its Selected Professions Fellowship award for women enrolled in master’s degree programs that will benefit from increased enrollment among women. The fellowship, established in 1970, initially targeted law and medicine but now includes architecture, computer/information sciences, engineering, and mathematics/statistics programs, open to all eligible applicants regardless of color.

Eligibility requirements include full-time enrollment in accredited institutions in the US, with priority given to applicants without a master’s degree or first professional degree.

Terry Masters Memorial Scholarship

Every year, one recipient is selected for the Terry Masters Memorial Scholarship Program, which celebrates excellence in the arts. There is no required major, university, or GPA to be eligible for this merit-based scholarship. Instead, the selection committee wants to know what makes you unique. 

Since the award is targeted toward new Americans, candidates should also highlight their commitment to American values, specifically those in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. (Note: You do have to be either a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident—like a green-card holder or someone with refugee status—to apply.)

4. The Beinecke Scholarship Program

Williams Jr. Scholarship provides a $10,000 stipend each academic year for up to three years. Prime candidates will be those with a history of strong academic achievement and an interest in patent law. 6. Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship

Amount: $35,000 + Summer Associate salary + $40,000 upon completion of program

The Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship is one of the most competitive scholarships for graduate students in their first year of business school. Because it involves both a scholarship and a paid internship opportunity, this fellowship is a great way to kickstart a business career.

The Violet and Cyril Franks Scholarship was created to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. Sponsored by the American Psychological Foundation, this award funds graduate-level scholarly projects that use a psychological perspective to help raise awareness and change perspectives around mental health. You’ll need a specific, well-thought-out project proposal to have the best shot at winning this award. 

26. Gertrude M. Fox Scholarship

The Gertrude M. Fox Scholarship is sponsored by the American Statistical Association. Its goal: to support outstanding women as they pursue statistics-related professions. The committee gives out two different awards  — one for a female statistician in the beginning of her graduate studies and the other to a woman nearing the end of her program.

Paying for your education.

We award millions of dollars in scholarships to graduate-level students each year to recognize need and merit. While our scholarships may not completely cover your costs, they can be part of a multi-source financial aid package that helps you gain access to NYU Steinhardt’s academic and professional opportunities.

We strongly encourage all US citizens and permanent residents to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be eligible for the greatest range of aid. We must receive a FAFSA by March 1 for summer/fall enrollment or November 1 for spring enrollment in order to consider you for School-based scholarships.  Learn more about applying for financial aid .

Unless otherwise noted, our scholarships are for full-time, on-campus, US citizen or permanent resident students. Students receiving Tuition Remission from NYU are not eligible for school-based scholarships.

Scholarship deadlines are firm, so do not wait for your admissions decision before submitting your FAFSA and/or scholarship application. Applying after the deadline delays the processing of federal aid and may result in you being ineligible for Steinhardt scholarships.

Scholarships for Underrepresented Populations

Diversabilities Scholarship

Steinhardt believes that inclusive education is central to achieving high-quality education and experiences for all learners, including those with disabilities. Preference for this scholarship is given first to students eligible for services in the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities,  including hearing and visual impairments, mobility impairments, learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders, chronic illnesses, and psychological impairments.

First Generation Scholarship

Recipients of this award must be in the first generation of their family to have completed a bachelor’s degree and have the potential to excel academically based on demonstrated success.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), and Tribal Colleges Scholarship

We offer this scholarship on a competitive basis to newly admitted full-time on-campus students who are graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities. 

Available to newly admitted on-campus master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma  students. LGBTQ+ Diversity Scholarship

Applicants must have a proven track record of leadership and community involvement, working for the betterment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities.  Any interested student, regardless of identity or background, is eligible for this opportunity.

Available to newly admitted on-campus master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma  students. AmeriCorps Alumni Scholarship

We award up to five partial scholarships per year to AmeriCorps alumni interested in pursuing full-time graduate study in one of our on-campus  master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs,  starting in the Fall semester.  We do not match the Education Award . You must complete your service by the start of the Fall semester to be eligible.

City Year Scholarship

We award up to five partial scholarships per year to City Year members and alumni interested in pursuing full-time graduate study in one of our on-campus  master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs , starting in the Fall semester.

NYU Peace Corps Coverdell Fellowship Program

This program offers a select group of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) leadership development programming and financial support while you pursue a full-time on-campus MA or MS degree, starting in the Fall semester. The Coverdell Fellowship selection process is competitive; a limited number of fellowships are available each year, and availability   varies. The fellowship will provide a 50% tuition scholarship, basic health insurance, and participation in leadership development programming overseen by the NYU Leadership Initiative. Only RPCVs who have successfully completed their term of service by the start of the Fall semester are eligible. For more information visit the  NYU Peace Corps Coverdell Fellowship page .

Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Scholarship

A competitive scholarship is open to newly admitted returned Peace Corps volunteers pursuing full-time graduate study in one of our on-campus  master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs .

Teach for America Alumni Scholarship

We award up to five partial scholarships per year to alumni of Teach for America who are interested in pursuing full-time graduate study in one of our on-campus master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs,  starting in the Fall semester. You must complete your service by the start of the Fall semester to be eligible.

Urban Educators Impact Scholarship

We award up to five partial scholarships per year to current or former teachers from urban school districts who are interested in pursuing full-time graduate study in one of our on-campus  master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs, s tarting in the Fall semester.

We offer this scholarship to on-campus full-time master's and advanced certificate students who are academically talented and show a need for financial assistance.

21st Century Scholarships

This scholarship is offered to on-campus full-time, newly admitted master's and advanced certificate applicants showing the greatest potential and the strongest fit with the vision and mission of NYU Steinhardt. 

Dorothy Height Impact and Inclusion Award

In honor of distinguished alum and civil rights leader Dorothy Height, Steinhardt recognizes incoming full-time on-campus graduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to inclusion in the field of education and have made an impact in their community.

NYC Community Impact Scholarship

Global Study Scholarship

We believe that faculty-led graduate-level study abroad can significantly enhance your professional and academic training. To support participation in Steinhardt study abroad programs,  NYU Steinhardt offers select candidates a one-time scholarship of up to $3,000 to be used toward the cost of tuition, housing, and activity fees for a Steinhardt-based graduate study abroad course or program at one of our global sites or approved study away sites.  This scholarship is available to incoming students only.  

Additional Global Study Opportunities

Global Citizen Scholarship

This competitive scholarship is awarded to newly admitted on-campus master's, advanced certificate or diploma students who are  non-US citizens or non-permanent residents (including people who require a visa and DACA applicants) and have demonstrated strong academic achievement in their previous post-secondary education. Several awards are offered on a competitive basis.

Centennial Scholarships

The Mayor's Graduate Scholarship Program

Up to five partial tuition scholarships are available for on-campus part-time students who are full-time New York City employees.  Apply through the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) .

Exploring Graduate School Financial Aid for Minorities

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the average U.S. university charged graduate students $17,868 in tuition, fees, and room and board during the 2015-16 academic year. For most individuals, this figure represents a significant financial investment. As a result, many turn to financial aid to alleviate some or all of their educational expenses.

Financial Aid Information

Graduate students who attend accredited schools may be eligible for certain types of federal aid , such as direct unsubsidized loans, which offer recipients up to $20,500 per school year. Other federal aid opportunities include direct PLUS loans, TEACH Grants, and federal work-study grants. In addition, a variety of private companies, nonprofit organizations, community foundations, and other sources sponsor scholarships for graduate students. Many of these awards are reserved for students who belong to underrepresented minority groups.

What to Look for When Searching for Grad School Scholarship Opportunities

As you research scholarship opportunities, it is important to examine the eligibility criteria for each award. Most scholarships maintain requirements such as minimum GPA, enrollment status, and state of residence, along with any stipulations regarding the recipient's gender and/or racial background.

The scholarship amount is another point to consider. Some awards provide a flat amount, such as $100 or $500, while others cover full tuition costs for one year or longer. Candidates should also determine how scholarship money is awarded. While many distribute funds in a single lump sum, some scholarships are disbursed periodically throughout the school year. Renewable scholarships offer recipients funding for each year they remain in school.

Members of minority groups have access to a variety of scholarship opportunities, and many professional organizations, nonprofit groups, cultural foundations, and private companies sponsor awards for minority students. In addition, colleges and universities often provide institutional scholarships and grants that target candidates from underrepresented groups.

Other scholarships assist students pursuing specific careers or degrees. Scholarships based on major, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and hobbies are widely available. American Indian/Alaskan Native

Application Details: This scholarship is open to American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students enrolled full time at any accredited institution. Candidates must hold a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Required application materials include a digital photo, proof of tribal enrollment, and an official or unofficial college transcript.

American Indian Education Fund

Application Details: The AIEF offers competitive grants to American Indian or Alaska Native graduate students who take between six and 18 credits per term. This award is reserved for brick-and-mortar students. Applicants must demonstrate a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Amount: $1,000-$2,000

American Indian Graduate Center Scholarships

Application Details: AIGC offers several graduate scholarships for candidates who are enrolled members of federally recognized American Indian tribes or Alaska Native groups. Awards are available for students pursuing degrees in STEM fields, veterinary medicine, public health, nursing, and library science. AIGC also sponsors a graduate fellowship.

American Indian Nurse Scholarship Program

Application Details: The National Society of Colonial Dames of America offers this scholarship to candidates who claim at least one-quarter Native ancestry. Applicants must be enrolled in a nursing, healthcare or health education program at an accredited institution, and must demonstrate financial need. Funds are distributed in two installments.

Amount: $3,000

Association on Indian American Affairs Scholarship

Application Details: The AAIA Scholarship is open to full-time students belonging to any federally, state, or non-federally recognized tribe in the contiguous U.S. or Alaska. Required application materials include an official transcript, proof of tribal enrollment and a two- to three-page essay.

Brown and Caldwell Minority Scholarship

Application Details: This award funds full-time graduate students who identify as Alaska Natives or members of other minority groups and are enrolled in a civil, chemical, electrical, environmental, or mechanical engineering program. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required. Applicants must submit a resume, two letters of recommendation, and a 250-word essay.

Amount: $5,000

Cherokee Nation Scholarships

Application Details: The Cherokee Nation offers two graduate-level scholarships for tribal members. The Graduate Scholarship award funds students pursuing their first master's or doctoral degree, while the Direct Study Scholarship is available to candidates pursuing a postgraduate degree in a field aimed at strengthening the Cherokee Nation government and economy. Residency restrictions apply for both awards.

Chickasaw Nation Scholarships and Grants

Application Details: The Chickasaw Nation sponsors several financial aid opportunities for tribal members seeking graduate degrees. The General Scholarship is open to part- or full-time Chickasaw students who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Master's and doctoral students with at least a 2.0 GPA may apply for additional grants. Additional opportunities include textbook grants and a laptop scholarship.

Osage Nation Higher Education Scholarship

Application Details: This award is available to enrolled members of the Osage Nation who are pursuing a master's or doctoral degree. Recipients must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher. The Osage Nation also sponsors the Mary E. Tinker Scholarship for graduate students and the Eugene Daniel Scholarship for medical students at any degree level.

Truman D. Picard Scholarship

Application Details: This award from the Intertribal Timber Council supports Native American students pursuing degrees related to natural resources. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, and should submit an application letter discussing their interest in natural resources and commitment to their education, community, and culture.

Amount: $2,500

Asian/Pacific Islander

Aicpa scholarship award for minority accounting students.

Application Details: The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants provides this scholarship to full-time graduate-level accounting students. Candidates must belong to an ethnic minority group and plan to obtain CPA licensure after graduation.

Amount: $3,000 to $5,000

APALA Scholarship

Application Details: The Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association offers this award for students earning a master's or doctoral degree in library and/or information science. Candidates may be enrolled full- or part-time, and must claim Asian/Pacific Islander heritage. This award is administered in two equal payments during the fall and spring terms.

Amount: $1,000

Filipino-American Psychology Scholarship

Application Details: This award is open to Filipino-American students earning a master's or doctoral degree in any psychology field. Graduating seniors planning to earn a graduate-level psychology degree are also eligible to apply. Applicants must submit an unofficial transcript, two letters of recommendation, and an essay describing their commitment to the Filipino-American community.

Hsiao Memorial Social Sciences Scholarship

Application Details: This scholarship from the Asian Pacific Fund funds graduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Candidates claiming Asian heritage who pursue graduate degrees in social science or economics receive preference. U.S. citizens, residents, and foreign nationals may apply.

Hmong American Education Fund Scholarships

Application Details: The Hmong American Education Fund offers five individual awards for full-time graduate students. Application materials include an essay of up to 1,500 words, an unofficial transcript, and one letter of recommendation.

Amount: $500-$4,000

Japanese Medical Society of America Scholarships

Application Details: The JMSA offers multiple scholarships for candidates pursuing medical degrees. Application may qualify for multiple scholarships. Candidates must submit a project proposal related to their academic field and a letter of recommendation.

Korean American Scholarship Foundation

Application Details: These scholarships are intended for full-time Korean American graduate students. Funds are awarded by the organization's seven regional chapters and vary by region. Candidates are evaluated for financial need and scholastic achievement. Applicants must submit letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

Amount: $500 to $5,000

Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship

Application Details: The Asian American Journalists Association provides this award to graduate-level journalism students. AAJA membership is encouraged, but not required, and applicants must demonstrate commitment to the organization's mission.

Amount: $2,000

South Asian Journalists Association Scholarship

Application Details: This nonrenewable award is open to graduate students pursuing journalism degrees and careers. Candidates who claim heritage from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and/or Sri Lanka receive preference. Other applicants who express an interest in covering South Asia may also apply for funding.

Tang Scholarship

Application Details: This award is available to students who claim Asian/Pacific Islander ancestry and identify as LGBTQ. Eligible candidates must be high school graduates from one of nine California counties hold a minimum 3.0 GPA. The award is renewable for up to three years.

Black/African-American

Application Details: This AICPA scholarship is intended for full-time graduate students pursuing an accounting degree. Candidates must identify as black or African American, or belong to other ethnic groups underrepresented in the accounting field. Applicants must also plan to become CPAs after graduation.

Amount: $3,000-$5,000

Albert W. Dent Graduate Scholarship

Application Details: Sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives, this award funds graduate students entering their final year of a healthcare management program. Candidates should identify as black/African-American or as members of another minority group, and must be pursuing an MHA, MPH, and MBA in healthcare administration.

Allison E. Fisher Scholarship

Application Details: This scholarship from the National Association of Black Journalists targets graduate students majoring in journalism or communication-related fields. Candidates must provide a record of community service and an essay explaining their reasons for choosing a journalism career. Applicants must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Application Details: Brown and Caldwell offers this scholarship for students enrolled in civil, chemical, electrical, environmental, or mechanical engineering graduate programs. Candidates must identify as African-American or belong to another minority group. Application materials include two letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

CBC Spouses Education Scholarship

Application Details: The Congressional Black Caucus provides this scholarship to full-time graduate students in any academic field who identify as black or African-American. Candidates should maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher, demonstrate an interest in leadership and community service, and provide two letters of recommendation and a current resume.

Amount: $500-$8,200

Charles Shelton Foundation

Application Details: This nonrenewable scholarship provides funding for African American, full-time graduate students who are pursuing a degree and career in veterinary medicine. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required. Applicants must submit two sealed letters of recommendation, a resume, and an essay of up to 750 words.

NABA Scholarships

Application Details: The National Association of Black Accountants sponsors three scholarships for graduate students earning degrees in accounting, finance, or business. Candidates must identify as black, African American, or Caribbean. Eligible applicants should hold a 3.0 GPA or higher and current student membership in the NABA.

Amount: $1,000-$5,000

National Black Nurses Association Scholarships

Application Details: The NBNA offers a total of 18 scholarships for graduate-level nursing students with at least one year of school remaining. Candidates must be members of their NBNA local chapter, or direct members if they live more than 50 miles from the nearest chapter location. Required application materials include two letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

Amount: $1,000-$15,000

Wynetta E. Frazier Sister-to-Sister Scholarship

Application Details: Sponsored by the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc., this scholarship funds female African American female students whose education has been delayed or interrupted due to personal reasons. Qualifying candidates must be at least 21 years old, and should provide two letters of recommendation, an official transcript, and a personal statement.

Hispanic/Latino

Application Details: AICPA offers this award to graduate students pursuing accounting degrees. Candidates must identify as Hispanic or Latino, or belong to another ethnic group that is underrepresented in the accounting field. Applicants must be full-time students who plan to obtain CPA licensure.

Association of Cuban-American Engineers Scholarship Foundation

Application Details: The ACAESF provides this scholarship for engineering graduate students claiming Cuban-American or other Hispanic heritage. Candidates must be full-time students who have completed at least 30 credits at an ABET-accredited school. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status is also required.

Amount: $500-$2,500

Carlos M. Castañeda Journalism Scholarship

Application Details: This award is open to Spanish-speaking graduate-level journalism students who are interested in covering Latin America. Applicants must submit three letters of faculty recommendation, three samples of work published in Spanish, and a 2,000-word personal essay in Spanish.

HACU Scholarship

Application Details: The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities offers multiple scholarships for graduate students enrolled at HACU-member schools. These include the Miller Light and Coors Light scholarships, both of which are valued at $2,500 and open to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. Candidates for all awards must demonstrate financial need.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Application Details: The HSF is a merit-based scholarship fund that supports graduate students claiming Hispanic heritage. Application Details: The Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting offers this scholarship to female students of Hispanic origin who are currently enrolled in or planning to enter graduate school. ABA Foundation Diversity Scholarship

Application Details: The American Bus Association provides this scholarship for graduate students earning degrees in a travel- or tourism-related field. Ford Foundation Fellowship

Application Details: The Ford Foundation Fellowship provides three years of financial support for full-time graduate students pursuing a doctoral degree in science. Application Details: This award from the American Association of Law Libraries is available to students belonging to any minority group who are earning a graduate-level degree in library science or attending law school. Judith McManus Price Scholarship

This award from The University of Montana Western is for students of art. It is a fund set up in honor of Mary Baker Emerick and available only to female students who intend to study for a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education while choosing art as their major. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid should be the first port of call for most students, but especially those looking to go onto post-graduate study. American colleges and universities will always need university level teachers and lecturers. The great thing about FAFSA is that there are very few restrictions to the program - each applicant is considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must be a US citizen, an eligible non-citizen (such as a permanent resident), and have a valid Social Security number. Fulbright Scholar Program

Fulbright offers a number of grants and scholarships to undergraduates and graduate students, with a particular focus on early career research, lecturing and funding the first post-doctoral research that would be vital to your college teaching career. In this case, you already need to have completed your doctoral degree - you cannot apply while you are still a student. They offer several funding paths: some are available only to women and ethnic minorities for example, and most are field-flexible meaning you can apply from almost any discipline. Hispanic Scholarship Fund

The HSF presently offers access to two separate scholarship programs. Their general program, which has run for many years, is available for people of Hispanic ethnicity from underprivileged backgrounds. It is not just for high school students looking to enter college, but also existing undergraduate and postgraduate students looking to further their studies and research - this includes doctorates with a view to carry on into teaching and researching at college. The value of the fund ranges from $500 to $5,000. You have a higher chance of acceptance if you are studying a STEM subject.

AICPA Fellowship

There is considered to be a lack of ethnic minorities in the accounting field. With that said, the AICPA Fellowship for Minority Doctoral Students focuses on increasing representation in the teaching of accounting and other financial subjects. This fellowship is available to ethnic minorities who are presently studying for a doctorate in finance and intend to devote their studies towards teaching the subject to others. You do not need to have gained acceptance onto a doctoral program. Applicants can also be awaiting a decision from a college. American Society of Mechanical Engineers

The ASME Fellowship seeks to address the critical shortage of engineers. ASME have set up this fund in an attempt to encourage the brightest and best young people (who might have otherwise felt hindered by costs) to apply to an essential field. Anyone can apply, but the selection process generally favors women and ethnic minorities. However, that's not to say you will receive automatic refusal for not being part of this demographic. This education development fellowship seeks to improve education standards across all disciplines within our schools. With a value of $27,500, the fellowship is available to anyone who has proposed a research dissertation on how to improve education standards in the US. It is a highly competitive fellowship, with just 35 granted each year to an expected 600+ applicants. Edwyna Wheadon Training Scholarship Fund

It can be difficult to get funding for a postgraduate course, and teaching English is no exception. For those who wish to advance in their career to study a master's or other post-grad course, the EWTSF offers $500-1,000 annually to one applicant. Set up in honor of a woman who did much in her career to encourage advanced training for English teachers in her native Houston. The money goes directly to the institution. NILRR Applegate-Jackson-Parks Future Teacher Scholarship

Set up in honor of three Michigan teachers who refused to pay union fees (and were consequently fired for refusing to do so), this scholarship is for both undergraduates and graduates who have pursued or are pursuing a degree in education at an accredited and publicly funded institution. Approval is dependent on the applicant having a teaching license, or pending acceptance of said license. You will be expected to write a mini essay on the subject of voluntary unionism and the problems of compulsory unionism. The fund will go directly to the education establishment upon approval. James Madison Graduate Fellowship

It's important that High School students understand the importance of the US Constitution, its history and context, its meaning, and why it is so important to the country's laws.

The James Madison Graduate Fellowship is a fund set up in honor of the fourth president for people who wish to teach about the Constitution in our high schools. It has a value of $24,000 and is limited to one person, per state, per year. Therefore, the only competition you will have will be other people in your state applying for the fund. Minority Teaching Fellows

This Tennessee specific fund is for ethnic minorities in the state who are an eligible US citizen or permanent resident and who wishes to pursue a career in post-secondary education. It is for a flat $5000 fund going to a single selected candidate every year. Applicants will be required to write a statement titled "Why I chose teaching as a profession" with a limit of 250 words along with a number of other selection criteria. The Bright Horizons Scholarship Program is one of only a few dedicated to training and encouraging the next generation of early childhood teachers. Preschool Development Grants

This is a competition applied for by preschools to aid in the development of their education programs. Western Michigan University has several scholarships available for their students that can be applied against Education Administration and Education Leadership courses. Amongst them are Robert O. Brinkerhoff Endowed Scholarship for organizational learning (must be pursuing a Master's Degree in Organizational Learning and Performance) and the Van E. The Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars is a group dedicated to strengthening ties and preserving the records of Native American descendants. ACRL Scholarships

The Association of College and Research Libraries is a division of the ALA (above) dedicated to librarian who work or want to work in the education and research sector. Knowing that having good academic librarians is a must for selecting books for our schools and colleges, the ACRL have made available a number of scholarships and grants for librarians who are still in the early part of their career. The Early Career Librarian Scholarship is for librarians already working in the field (but with less than six years of experience) to develop professionally - particularly amongst minorities and other disadvantaged groups. AALL George A. Strait Minority Scholarship

The American Association of Law Libraries makes available a number of scholarships to college graduate students who are a) part of an ethnic minority as defined by government guidelines and b) have significant law library experience that could lead to a career as a librarian and c) are at an accredited law school or library. SAA Scholarships

Archiving includes libraries, but it also includes any system of storage of documents and material, and their cataloging in order that an interested audience can search and access them. For those who want to work in a more specific niche, the SAA are one of the country's major organizations dedicated to indexing, storing and preserving the nation's important book, evidence, historical records and other vital collections. The National Science Foundation is the country's largest science education organization. This scholarship is in place in the state of New York in order to encourage science and math graduates to enter into teaching those subjects to grades 7-12. In order to be eligible, you must be enrolled in a college in New York State (High School Students are not eligible) and not receiving scholarships from any other program - especially those that might commit you to conditions of receipt (to work in a certain school or field). The Mikkelson Foundation

Some funds require that you already be in a teaching position in order to qualify; this is one of them. National Association of Biology Teachers is dedicated to excellence in teaching biology in school. Looking at the science from the perspective of ocean science (including biology), their scholarship programs encourage undergraduates and graduates in getting hands on experience. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology rewards one woman every year on a number of criteria including scientific achievement, excellence in teaching (at post doctoral and undergraduate levels) and contributions to the scientific community. Tobin Sorenson Physical Education Scholarship

Available to members of Pi Lambda Theta, this scholarship is for undergraduate and postgraduate students intending to pursue a career in the physical education of children grades K-12. The scholarship is worth $1,000 and is sent directly to the accredited institution at which the student is presently studying or about to commence a program of education. Larry Graham Aspiring Principal Scholarship

Offered by the Alaska Association of Secondary Principals (AASP) it is named after a former School Principal who did much during his life to promote the importance of having qualified, dedicated people in the role. Applicants must already be enrolled on the Alaska Type B Administrative Certificate to be eligible to apply for this $1,500 scholarship. AASA Education Administration Scholarship

The American Association of School Administrators is the leading educational administration organization in the USA. It honors and aids graduate students to achieve an administration role in a school or college - including for those wishing to train to be school principals and secretaries. It is one of the country's oldest scholarship awards having been founded in 1949. The value of the award is $2,500 per successful applicant who will be given up to $500 as a travel bursary to go to the award ceremony to collect the scholarship. Business Professionals of America Scholarship

The BPA offer scholarships to certain administration students, but only if the college or other education institution has affiliated with the BPA. There is a set list of criteria - for example you must be studying one of the defined courses which include most finance, business and public administration programs at any accredited college in those states. There are three scholarships available with the first chosen receiving $3,000, the second receiving $2,500 and the third $2,000. You must also be a member of the BPA. The APA is the country's largest psychology organization offering many scholarships relating to training in counseling and psychology, and helping people research and develop treatments for a variety of mental illnesses. Amongst them are a number for child psychology and those for people wishing to provide counseling services to young people. The Jacqueline Ann Morris is an annual fund for teachers looking to improve mental health in their elementary or middle school. Maximum value of $4,500 annually. National Association of School Psychologists

The largest group in the USA dedicated to providing training and information to school psychologists, have several scholarships and grant programs available for applicants wishing to enter into school counseling / psychology as a career. Amongst them are the Minority Scholarship Program available to lower financial barriers to ethnic minority students wishing to enter into a career as a school psychologist. The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and applicants must be members of NASP, a US citizen and enrolled at a NASP approved institution. Special Education Teacher Scholarships

Special education teaching takes a special kind of teacher. Teaching children with special needs - whether that be learning difficulties such as dyslexia, or children with learning disabilities such as neurological or physical disability, it can be rewarding but presents a different kind of challenge. Because there is a shortage of such teachers, there are special grants and scholarships available.

Dr. Marc Hull Special Education Leadership Scholarship

Available to residents of Vermont, this $1,750 scholarship is available to students pursuing a career as an administrator of special needs education services. The institution of attendance must be Federally approved Title IV funding (Pell and TEACH grants). Applicants must be seeking application of certification or license of special education administration and provide a letter of recommendation and references. Not limited to teaching kids with special needs, extra consideration is given to those students at undergraduate and graduate level who intend to teach children and young adults with special education needs. The grant is worth up to $4,000 every year and special conditions are placed on recipients such as that they are contractually bound to teach in a US school for a certain number of years (usually in a socially deprived area). Indiana Minority Teacher/Special Services Scholarship

Available only to minority students living in the state of Indiana, applicants must already have applied for FAFSA to be eligible, and the commission must receive a copy of this. You may already be studying an accredited education course or have received an offer of a place to study at a relevant education establishment and a US citizen or eligible non-citizen (such as a permanent resident). Scholarship is also limited to those who will teach at an accredited school upon graduation. This scholarship offers financial aid in the form of one-half tuition scholarships for three credits per term, or 1.5 credits. Estimated Tuition

The estimated cost of the Public Administration program is $1,660 per unit for the 2024-2025 academic year, with a minimum of 8 units required to be completed each academic year. Students typically take an average of 18 units in the first academic year and 20 units in the second academic year. A total of 38 units are required for the degree. Program fees are subject to adjustment annually, and the number of required units may vary based on enrollment status. Program Scholarships

We offer a limited number of merit-based scholarships to incoming students on a competitive basis for up to $10,000 to highly selective applicants to support their first-year study in the program. All applicants, both U.S. and international students, are considered for these scholarships when the applications are reviewed. There is no separate application for this type of financial assistance. Applications received before the Priority Date will receive preferred scholarship consideration.

The Dean's Scholarship

The Dean’s Scholarship grants recipients compensation for research and for conference travel. Additional benefits include the Dean's Scholar kickoff and reception, connection with other Dean's Scholars and with leaders across the college, and the chance to serve as program representatives to USF donors and Development initiatives.

To be considered for the $15,000 Dean's Scholarship towards their first year of tuition, students must apply by the program's priority deadline.

Double Dons Scholarship

USF Alumni and current students can be awarded the USF Double Dons Scholarship upon admission. The scholarship covers 20% of the program tuition, and may not be stacked with other USF scholarship awards. Exceptions may apply. Double Dons on MyUSF

On-Campus Student Employment

Enrolled students can apply for student employment opportunities on campus to earn additional income towards tuition or day-to-day expenses. International students are eligible to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during the semester and up to 35 hours during the summer period and intersession.

Applicants can also seek out non-USF financial aid to fund their graduate education.

Lieutenant Barbara Hammerman Memorial Scholarship

Lieutenant Barbara Hammerman served the citizens of San Mateo with distinction for 21 years as a member of the San Mateo Police Department. She championed the rights and protection of the vulnerable in our society. Barbara was the trailblazer who fought courageously for women’s rights. She was the first openly gay officer hired by the San Mateo Police Department, the first woman in the County to ride on the motorcycle unit, the first to establish random Child Seat Restraint Checkpoints at schools, and the first to establish drunk-driving checkpoints in the City. She consulted high schools on drug trends, trained probation officers on signs and symptoms of drug abuse, and was the first narcotic's detective in San Mateo's history to receive the prestigious Narcotics Officer of the Year award. Barbara received her Bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement Leadership from the University of San Francisco, and her Master’s in Leadership from St. Mary’s College. This award is given in Barbara’s name because of her commitment to leadership and to serving others.

Merit scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated superior academic and/or professional achievements, and outstanding talent or commitment to extracurricular activities, community service, leadership, entrepreneurship. Merit Scholars should also fully embody the USF mission to change the world for the better. EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 21, 2024) – One of America’s most prominent private supporters of engineering education has given $11 million in strategic support for need-based scholarships and learning initiatives to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, America’s largest producer of Black engineering graduates.

North Carolina A&T and the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation’s relationship began in 2020 with a $1 million multi-year investment that supported students at risk of withdrawing from the university and seeded a matching gift campaign to bolster an Engineering Completion Scholarships Endowment supporting students with unmet financial need.

The Foundation has since extended its support with an additional $10 million contribution, making the combined $11 million investment from the Washington, D.C., based charitable organization one of the largest A&T has ever received.

The $10 million donation will go to the A&T College of Engineering to create the Clark Legacy Endowed Scholarships for first-time, first-year students, and to support Pathways Scholarships for transfer students, experiential learning initiatives and current-use scholarships.

“The Clark Foundation is not only incredibly generous, but they understand the financial challenges that many outstanding students face in completing their college education,” said A&T Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. “They have structured these gifts in focused ways that will heighten their impact and ensure that students in need can leverage the help they need to stay in school and complete their education.

“We are grateful for the Clark Foundation’s enthusiastic support. By investing in our College of Engineering, their gifts will have an outsized, national impact on representation of African Americans in the engineering profession.”

The Clark Foundation’s mission is to “expand opportunities for those who demonstrate the drive and determination to better themselves and their communities.” Since its founding in 1987, the foundation has supported hundreds of nonprofits, with a principal goal to ensure that its recipients have the leadership, infrastructure and financial strength to grow and support their communities now and in the future.

“This investment aligns strongly with my father A. James Clark’s vision and in-turn the Clark Foundation’s commitment to making a well-rounded, high-quality engineering education accessible and affordable,” says Courtney Clark Pastrick, board chair of the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation. “We are proud to continue our partnership with North Carolina A&T as they further meet the critical needs of students and expand their impact on campus.”

The College of Engineering leads the way in innovative research at A&T, with significant advancements in autonomy, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, cybersecurity, sustainability and biomedical engineering.

“At the Clark Foundation we believe that college success goes beyond scholarships,” said Natalie Grandison, director of Higher Education & Strategy at the Clark Foundation “From the very beginning A&T demonstrated their aligned values through their steadfast commitment to student academic success and personal well-being. This additional investment from the Clark Foundation will enhance the College of Engineering’s ability to not only enroll excellent students, but also support access to experiences outside the classroom that are critical to degree completion and career readiness.”

Through advising and completion scholarships like the ones from Clark Foundation, more than 200 students have been able to stay in school, contributing to the College of Engineering having the highest retention rate on campus.

“Our partnership with the Clark Foundation has allowed the College of Engineering to do what we do best: educate the future leaders of engineering and computer scientists,” said Stephanie Luster-Teasley Pass, College of Engineering dean. “With this exciting and historic investment in the college and, by extension, the university, the Clark Foundation has enabled us to continue the growth of our exceptional students and research endeavors.”

“The significance of the investment from the Clark Foundation cannot be understated,” said Tamera Ziglar, senior director of corporate engagement for the College of Engineering. “From the beginning, they sought to develop deep ties and meaningful interactions with the university and the College of Engineering, which eventually led to the $11 million in support. The legacy and historical significance of Mr. Clark’s desire to give back to future generations of engineers will have a lasting impact on North Carolina A&T, long after the Foundation sunsets.”

UT to add 576 beds with new graduate student housing complex, boost housing scholarships

The University of Texas will move forward with a graduate student housing project that will bring 576 beds along with entertainment, dining and grocery options. The UT System Board of Regents on Thursday approved the university's proposal to build the project at 1900 Comal St.

The new development is the second phase of the university's plan to expand graduate student housing, UT President Jay Hartzell told the American-Statesman on Thursday. The new complex will be built near another new graduate student housing project UT plans to open in the fall with about 780 beds.

It will also be near UT's athletic facilities and will have five new beach volleyball courts, which will allow the UT women's team to host NCAA competitions.

The project is part of the university's commitment to establishing "high-quality affordable housing" and a strong sense of community for graduate students, which will help UT attract top talent, Hartzell said.

"When I got the job in 2020, this was on the drawing board," Hartzell said. "As a person who went to graduate school at UT, I get the need. And as the city's gotten more expensive, this is just one more thing we're trying to do to ensure students choose us."

Jim Davis, UT chief operating officer, said costs for the new graduate complex are still being estimated, and it is expected to open in 2027.

The new development will feature about 9,000 square feet of retail space and 3,000 square feet for dining, which will help support the athletic and East Campus communities, a university spokesperson said. With the latest project, UT will have about 2,250 graduate student beds available in three complexes.

The spokesperson said rental costs for the Phase Two housing units have not yet been determined but are expected to be at or below market value.

Davis said the two residential complexes are the university's first new graduate student housing projects in about 40 years.

What else is UT doing for student housing?

The university is also continuing its housing scholarship program in the upcoming school year after launching the program this year to help low- and middle-income students with on-campus housing costs. UT spent about $5 million to subsidize housing costs for about 3,200 on-campus students who qualified for UT's tuition assistance program, Texas Advance Commitment .

The university is increasing its investment in the program to $7.5 million to account for price increases and to serve more students, Hartzell said. Texas Advance Commitment 1 students can receive $1,800 to $2,300, and Texas Advance Commitment 2 students (those with higher family income levels) can receive $900 to $1,400.

In February, regents gave UT permission to begin negotiations to start building an estimated $145 million, 1,000-bed undergraduate student housing complex  in place of the Whitis Court residence hall, which has about 200 beds. This will be the first newly built undergraduate housing complex since 2007, though the university purchased Dobie Twenty21 with a capacity of almost 1,000 student residents in 2021.

With the new undergraduate and two new graduate student complexes, UT is on a path to add about 2,000 beds by 2027.

What does the UT System board's action mean?

The board's decision Thursday authorizes UT to enter into a private-public partnership agreement — the same process the two other new complexes underwent. The university will enter into a lease agreement with the 2033 Higher Education Development Foundation, a nonprofit that advises the university on real estate matters, that will then contract with a private developer for the property.

The regents also authorized the university to use the UT System's Revenue Financing System, which also is financing the undergraduate complex project.

Site permitting and design will start this summer. The design will be similar to the East Campus Graduate Apartments, Davis said.

Hartzell thanked the board for its approval of the project and said he hopes UT's increase of housing supply — with the new beds and scholarship support — will help students tackle rising living costs and choose to enroll at UT.

"It really pertains to this goal of trying to find more high-quality, affordable housing for our graduate students," Hartzell said. "And build a sense of community that has vibrancy to it."
