In the whole history of the world, there has never been a presenter who has been able to see whether his or her audience knows something, understands something or recognizes something. A piece of friendly advice as you begin mapping out the goal(s) for your next presentation: don’t go into your next presentation wanting your audience to know or understand or recognize something. You’ll never be able to see if you’ve accomplished your goal. It will be very unfulfilling for you.

Of course, you will be able to observe if your audience can describe something. Or create something. Or demonstrate something. Or compare and contrast various somethings. And when you give your audience an opportunity to describe or create or demonstrate or compare and contrast, they not only have to pay attention to what you’re saying, but they have to use what you’re saying to them. Which is an essential component to your audience being able to remember what you’ve said because, as the saying goes, if they don’t use what you’ve said or taught them, they’ll lose it.

Following are 25 suggestions on how to engage your audience. It’s influenced by Bloom’s Taxonomy , but I’ll save you all the technical teacher jargon and I’ll cut right to the ideas and activities that I hope you’ll find useful. I’ve broken this list into two categories: ideas to engage groups in shorter presentations (30 minutes or less) and ideas for longer presentations (an hour or more). I offer this breakdown because I’ve seen many facilitators (and I count myself among them) who routinely try to jam too many things into shorter presentations.

For shorter presentations, allow time for your attendees to :

Compare/contrast

Explain how the information you shared will impact their job

For longer presentations, challenge your attendees to:

Provide peer feedback

Write a case study

Solve a problem (preferably a real-life problem)

Demonstrate

An interactive presentation is much more likely to keep your audience’s attention and build rapport with them, and there are a few simple ways to achieve this, from live polling to asking questions throughout.

This article explores several different effective strategies for making the audience feel fully involved in your presentation and keeping your audience’s eyes away from their smartphones.

Why involve your audience?

Listening to a presentation for any length of time can be a difficult process. Once you sign up, Mentimeter will ask a few questions to understand how you plan to use their service. Then, the software will analyze your responses to suggest specific templates based on your needs. If you don't like their recommendations, you can access all of Mentimeter's templates to find what you want. 

After you create your presentation and are ready to launch, your audience can respond to your questions, react to your content, and ask questions using any device. All of their responses are anonymous, too—and their feedback will appear on the screen immediately after they submit them. 

Pros of using Mentimeter:

  • Feedback gathering: Mentimeter is great if you want to gather insights from your audience or gauge your audience's sentiments about a particular topic. 
  • Customization capabilities: You can tailor every template to fit your needs. You can even include your own branding. 
  • Integrations: Mentimeter is a corporate-friendly tool that integrates with Zoom, Hopin, Microsoft Teams, and PowerPoint. 

Cons of using Mentimeter:

  • Restrictive free plan: The free version doesn't offer a lot of features and comes with many restrictions. 
  • Expensive paid plans: If you want to access more features, you'll need a paid plan, but Mentimeter's paid tiers are significantly higher than other interactive presentation tools. 
  • Steep learning curve: Mentimeter isn't intuitive—some features are complex, so first-time users may struggle.
  • Inefficient customer support: Because of the company's location, the support team and support hours will be an obstacle for users in different time zones.
  • Editing restrictions: On-slide editing is not possible . Instead of editing content on the actual slides, you'll have to edit text fields on the side. 

Mentimeter has many features you need to make your presentation interactive, but accessing those features comes at a hefty cost. Also, because Mentimeter isn't intuitive, implementing certain elements can be difficult and time-consuming. However, if you're tech-savvy, Mentimeter could be a powerful and useful presentation tool. ‍

What is Slido?

Slido is a Q&A and live polling platform that lets you interact with your audience during your presentation . With this tool, you can ask poll questions and receive audience feedback in real time. Your audience can also submit questions and vote for their favorite ones. Because of these features, Slido is an interactive presentation tool that's best for Q&A sessions, Ask Me Anything, curating and brainstorming ideas, quizzes, and feedback gathering. 

How does Slido work?

Slido integrates with other presentation and video conferencing tools like Microsoft Teams, Vimeo, PowerPoint, and Google Slides. After signing up, you can access the tool and add its polling and Q&A features to your presentation slides. Once you're ready to present, your audience can join the fun by using the event link or QR code to participate. People can submit their responses using their mobile devices or laptop.

Pros of Slido: 

  • Integrations: Because it has so many integrations, you can use Slido on essentially any presentation builder. 
  • Good for large groups: Slido lets you add up to 5K participants, so it's good for large grounds. 

Cons of Slido: 

  • Learning curve: Many users believe Slido is hard to learn and comes with too many steps for presenters. Some needed multiple explanations from other users on how to utilize the tool. 
  • Limited features: All you get with Slido are polling and Q&A options, so you won't have many ways to engage your audience. 
  • Limited free option: The free plan has very basic features. With this plan, engaging your audience will be challenging.
  • Expensive: Slido is one of the more expensive options, with the enterprise plan reaching $200/month. 
  • Delays: Some users have experienced delays in displaying participants' responses on slides. 

Main Takeaway 

Slido is a good tool with great integrations. But its features are limited, and its plans are expensive. If you add the learning curve some users complain about, you may not find many benefits in using Slido—however, it's still worth considering if you care about integrations.  

What is Vevox?

Vevox is a live polling, quiz, and Q&A platform that helps you engage your audience . This interactive presentation software integrates with multiple tools, including Powerpoint, Blackboard, and Microsoft Teams. 

With Vevox, you can gather anonymous feedback to ensure everyone has a voice, gauge your audience's views on topics, and jumpstart a fun, competitive atmosphere with a quizzing experience. Vevox also lets you showcase participants' responses with unique visuals like word clouds.

How does Vevox work? 

After signing up for Vevox, you can use its integration feature to convert slides on your presentation into Vevox polling, Q&A, or quiz slides. During your actual presentation, participants can interact with you by scanning a QR code or entering an event ID, both of which will be present on your Vevox slides. Audience members can submit their questions and responses from anywhere and on any device. 

Pros of Vevox:

  • Great free plans: Vevox has two free plans—one for businesses and one for educators. Both allow up to 100 participants to interact with your presentation, and each tier provides integrations with Microsoft Teams and Powerpoint. 
  • Easy to run: Most users believe Vevox is easy to use and run. 
  • Integrations: With Vevox's many integrations, you can use the presentation tools you prefer. 

Cons of Vevox:

  • Expensive: Vevox is one of the most costly interactive presentation tools, with plans reaching $799/month. 
  • Poor design for end-users: Some presenters have expressed issues with how answer options appear on end-users' mobile devices. 
  • Best for Microsoft products: While Vevox integrates with many tools, it works seamlessly with Microsoft products like Teams, PowerPoint, and Windows. With other platforms, the integration is a bit more challenging. 
  • Few interactive features: Many users believe Vevox doesn't offer enough features to engage audiences, especially when compared to similar options. Users also think Vevox doesn't provide enough dynamic ways to present participants' poll answers. 
  • Data Gathering: Some users report issues getting data exported to another file. 

If you want an interactive presentation tool with basic engagement features, then Vevox is a good option. You can include a lot of participants with its free plans and use various integrations, which are bonuses if you typically speak to a large audience and have preferred presentation tools.

However, if you want interactive features that go beyond polling, quizzes, and Q&As to keep your audience glued in, then Vevox may not be the best solution. It's also quite expensive for lacking so many engagement features. 

6. Poll Everywhere

What is Poll Everywhere?

Poll Everywhere is a live polling tool that helps you gather feedback, gauge your audience's thoughts, and receive questions during your presentation. With Poll Everywhere, you can ask multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions and present participants' responses with word clouds. This interactive application also integrates with many presentation tools and meeting platforms, including PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, Microsoft Teams, and Slack. 

How does Poll Everywhere work?

You can access Poll Everywhere after creating an account. From there, you'll need to download Poll Everywhere on your device to enjoy the full, interactive experience. Once you download the application, you can use it when building your presentation by adding interactive poll questions to your slides. 

During your presentation, your audience can answer your poll questions using any device. Just share the activity link provided by Poll Everywhere. Then, participants can use that to see and respond to your questions. You can also dive deeper into participants' responses using the application's reporting capabilities—the tool lets you analyze audience insights using executive summaries, pivot tables, grade books, and participant response history. 

Pros of Poll Everywhere:

  • Easy PowerPoint integrations: Users believe Poll Everywhere seamlessly integrates with PowerPoint. 
  • Reporting capabilities: You can better understand your audience using one of the many report types that Poll Everywhere offers.
  • Customer support: This application has a good tech support and customer service team. 
  • Easy to use: Presenters and educators agree that Poll Everywhere is simple and straightforward.
  • Consistently improving: Many users believe the company does a great job implementing feedback and enhancing features.

Cons of Poll Everywhere:

  • Limited features: Like Vevox and Slido, Poll Everywhere doesn't have features beyond the basic interactive capabilities. 
  • Learning Management System integration: Some users have trouble integrating Poll Everywhere with BlackBoard and other LMS platforms. 
  • No enhancements: Other than word clouds, users think Poll Everywhere lacks the visual and audio enhancements that would make participants' responses fun to watch and hear. 
  • Expensive: While Poll Everywhere isn't the most expensive interactive presentation tool, it's not the cheapest. To get a good amount of features, you need the "Engage" plan, which is a little less than $50/month. 

Poll Everywhere is a good live polling tool—and its reporting capabilities are especially great. However, it's like many other interactive presentation tools; it doesn't offer a lot of features, even though it's somewhat pricey. It also doesn't integrate well with platforms outside of Microsoft PowerPoint.

‍ Prevent the Glazed Eyes

With an interactive presentation tool, you'll increase your chances of building something that not only sticks but holds your audience's attention—and that's exactly what you need. In an age where people have trouble concentrating and regularly scrolling on social media is normal, you have about ten minutes to grab and keep your audience's attention. Failure to do so means you'll be another statistic people use when explaining the importance of having an interactive presentation. 

You've got 10 minutes. That's the span of time most people can stay mentally engaged with a presentation before they check out. So, unless you can create stimulating content and deliver it masterfully, you will find your audience scrolling through TikTok and checking their email. So, if you want to nail your presentation, don't go in with slides that only feature bulleted lists and a photo here and there. Liven things up by using a tool that'll enhance your presentation's interactivity. Then, you'll give a presentation so good that it'll prevent people from scrolling and potentially lead to a standing ovation instead.

Top tips for increasing engagement during presentations

It is the most exciting and rewarding job on the planet. There is nothing quite like the buzz of delivering a live ‘show’ - often with no rehearsal - it's creative, energetic, intense & totally varied . No day is the same

Presentations offer a unique challenge to those doing the presenting. How to keep the audience’s attention during what is usually a one-way conversation.

It’s something our event managers have to contend with all the time and something we cover in our event management courses. How to increase engagement during a presentation.

Rather than keep all the good advice to ourselves, we thought we would share some of the tips with our valued readers.

What follows are a series of tips that can help increase engagement during even the longest presentation. We hope you can find something useful here!

Put yourself in the audiences’ shoes

When you’re planning your presentation, put yourself in the shoes of your audience and approach it from their perspective.

What do they want or need to know? How will they respond to data? Can I use humour or narrative to keep them interested? Will the audience immediately understand the topic or will I have to explain?

Considering your presentation from that perspective will help you design a presentation that closer matches their needs, which should help improve engagement.

Create a logical flow

Think of your presentation as a story where one topic flows logically into another in a wider unfolding narrative.

Lurching from one topic to another without some kind of link or flow can unsettle an audience and cause them to disengage. Keeping the flow natural and unfolding the presentation as you go should help build anticipation in the audience, which helps keep them engaged.

Actively engage the audience

If you can engage the audience in active participation, all the better. Not every type of presentation lends itself to this but if yours does, use it.

Ask questions, ask the audience to demonstrate or offer alternatives. Ask for rebuttals or opinions on points made and try to involve them as much as possible.

If you don’t want to interrupt your flow, mention throughout that you’ll take questions once you’re done to keep people interested. People are much more likely to remain engaged if they think they may need to call on some of your information later.

Tell stories

We have mentioned narratives a couple of times so far, and for good reason. They work. Telling stories works and you can use that within presentations.

Stories are engaging and are an exceptional way to share information with an audience. If you can weave a story into your presentation or use anecdotes to explain concepts, you’ll find your audience will pay far more attention.

If you can add an emotive element or use something the audience holds dear or values within that story, even better!

Mix up your mediums

Nobody wants to sit through a slideshow for an hour being talked at. Avoid that by mixing your mediums.

Use slides when relevant and where they work best but also integrate video, audio, demonstrations, free talking, questions and answers, a skit or sketch or other mediums to keep things varied and interesting.

Slides are fine when they make sense but are never the most engaging. Work with that, change it up and you should keep the audience with you for much longer.

Use polls or quizzes

If technology allows, use an app or even social media to run polls during the presentation or even run quizzes during down time.

There are lots of opportunities you can use to ask questions, run polls, ask for opinion, run competitions and other engaging elements within a presentation.

If your format allows for it, use it. People love having their say and feeling like their opinion is valued.

Use lots of relevant examples

If you put yourself in the shoes of your audience, you can probably come up with a raft of everyday examples they can relate to.

Using relatable examples helps the audience transpose your concepts into real life and how it is relevant to them. Depending on the subject matter, you can use work examples, sports, social, newsworthy examples or something else entirely.

Tune it to the topic and the audience and see what you can come up with.

Don’t forget eye contact

Eye contact is vital regardless of the size of the audience or the venue. Doing everything you can to look at the entire audience is a very effective way to keep people engaged.

We are much more likely to pay attention if we think the speaker is talking directly to us. Use that and some of these other tips bring the audience closer and keep them there.

Don’t underestimate the power of the prop

You do have to be careful with props but if used well, they are incredibly powerful at communicating concepts and increasing engagement.

Make sure your props aren’t cheesy or likely to offend and make them relevant to the subject matter. If you can do that, they can be very powerful.

One of the best examples we have ever seen of this was from Jill Bolte Taylor who used a real human brain as a prop to explain how she was affected by her stroke.

Use throwable microphones

Throwable microphones may be a gimmick but when combined with other elements can be a useful way to keep things light hearted.

When you ask questions of the audience, use a throwable microphone rather than having to wait until the mic has been passed or asking the audience to move to the aisle.

These microphones are light and wrapped in foam to prevent injury. They are also a little playful and encourage the audience to participate more in the conversation. Even if it’s to catch a mis-thrown microphone rather than to ask the actual question!

Feature games and competition

If the size, scope, audience and subject matter allow, include games and competitions in your presentation.

They can be as simple as ‘would you rather’ to quizzes, memory games, true or false and others. If you can make the game relevant to the topic or as a way of understanding the concepts, that would work wonders.

If suitable for the audience, adding an element of competition is also a powerful engagement tool. Boys vs girls, sales vs. support, bosses vs. staff or whatever.

Including any element of competition can bring out the best and the worst in people so be careful how you do it!

Stick to everyday language

Unless you’re presenting to specialists for whom specific words and language use really works, try to use everyday language wherever you can.

Avoid corporate speak, avoid using complicated words or phrases and make sure your presentation is structured so everyone, at every likely experience level, can understand.

Nothing loses an audience faster than lots of unnecessarily complicated words and phrases or feeling excluded because you don’t explain things properly.

Use previews effectively

A preview is an often underestimated element of a presentation. It’s the part where you introduce what’s coming next.

It builds on the structure we mentioned earlier. When you switch points or topics, a preview tells the audience what you’re covering, why you’re covering it and what to expect.

It’s a way to build anticipation, to focus the audience and let them fully engage with the next part of the presentation.

Just remember to always deliver on the promises you make within the preview!

Signpost transitions

Transitions are those parts of a presentation when you move from one point to another. They link the topic you just covered with what’s coming next and works with previews to provide a logical structure and flow.

They also help the audience to keep up, understand that the section is complete and that the next one is coming. You can signpost transitions in a number of ways, from a change of slide or background colour, change in lighting, opportunity to ask questions or answering some user-submitted questions.

The more imaginative you can be with your transitions, the easier your audience can follow you and not shut down.

Include yourself in the presentation

Including personal stories or anecdotes within a presentation helps break down that barrier between presenter and audience.

Adding a personal story relevant to your point or even telling a story including an attendee can add that element of informality that lacks in many events. It also helps engage with the audience and gets them paying attention, even if only to make sure you don’t include them in the next story!

Don’t just sit or stand there

One of the reasons TED talks are so successful is their informal nature. Presenters stand up, move around and are animated. You can use the same principles for your presentation.

Stand up, use a remote pointer, roll up your sleeves, walk around the stage or even walk around the audience if you can. It all helps make you relatable as well as create more of a connection with your audience.

Use technology

Slides are okay but they are typically one dimensional and not that engaging. If the event allows, using live actors, augmented reality, 360 video, drone or video footage and other media can help keep people involved.

Using any engagement medium can help build interest by offering visual or audio stimulation, interest in something different and fascination at a new way of demonstrating or interacting with a technology.

Live barometers

Live barometers are methods to get the audience moving and engaged during a presentation. They won’t work in every situation but wherever possible, they can be quite effective.

Ask questions, hold polls and ask the audience to move to one side of the room or the other depending on their opinion.

It’s a very simple concept but gets people moving and interacting with each other as well as with the presenter. It can work as an excellent icebreaker before a networking session too.

It can also be too bright to read text on, so be careful if you use this as a background color not to put too much text.

Red is associated with passion and anger. Use it to convey a striking, eye-catching tone. You can also use this to direct the eye with icons and elements to information. It can be hard to read lots of text on, consider using a darker shade of red if an abundance of text has to appear on it.

Blue is associated with tranquility and honesty. Use it to convey a corporate, elegant feel. Blue is quite a nice and versatile color to use all across icons, elements, text and a background color.

Purple is associated with innovation and regality. Use this to convey a tech, forward thinking feel. Purple is also versatile across icons, elements and text, but can be a tricky color to pair with other colors.

This is just a small selection of qualities that we naturally connect to color. Depending on the overall goal of your presentation, you can find colors that depict a tone that’s relevant to your overall message. Using the right color can make the difference, even if it’s just the one color!

Color Contrast

The contrast between the colors in your presentation is equally as important as the choice of color itself. This can inhibit your viewers from absorbing all of the content that you have to offer on each slide. You can find many color wheels online. If you want to build a color palette, consider what palette you want to have:

Monochromatic: Variations of the same hue by adjusting the shades, tones, and tints.

Analogous: These are color combinations made up of colors that sit next to each other a color wheel.

Complimentary: Opposite color combinations. Might seem off, but think Christmas red and green!

Triadic: Three colors that are evenly spaced apart on the color wheel. (For eg. purple, orange, teal)

Tetradic: Like split-complementary, this is made up of two complementary pairs. Think red, purple, green, yellow or purple, blue, orange, yellow.

This can take some time to really get right, but seeing the colors next to each other before you design can really help!

When we talk about effective use of images in presentation design, we don’t mean inserting related stock images to your powerpoint slides whenever possible. When there’s an image or two on every single slide, your audience is less likely to fully absorb all of them. A smaller amount of eye-catching images scattered throughout your powerpoint presentation will have a bigger impact on your audience. One striking image is better than a bunch of unmemorable ones. And if you pick a few key images, you can create an overall mood and feel of the message you want to convey on your powerpoint slides.

So, less is more: when you’re gathering content for your powerpoint presentation, keep an eye out for photos and graphics that enhance the meaning of your information. It’s best if the process of finding your images is authentic – don’t try to force images into the powerpoint presentation just for the sake of having visual aids. As mentioned above, you can use size, color, and layout to make powerpoint slides without an image visually interesting. When you use a photo just for the sake of using one, a repeated use of a design element can seem like the deck was designed copy and paste.

Keep aware of the real estate between text and images. Each slide only has enough space for 1-2 photos with basic text. If you have very short copy and striking image, create a slide with a master image and small subtext. It looks great on a big display. If not try to make room for your image to be admired while your text can still be readable within the time you talk per slide.

What’s new in ArcGIS StoryMaps (May 2024)

This journey started about 5 years ago (a little longer if you count from the initial beta release ) with a dream of creating a next-generation storytelling tool for ArcGIS. Fast-forward to today—200 software releases later—and we remain amazed by all the engaging, gorgeous, informative, and impactful stories being told by the community using ArcGIS StoryMaps.

And of course we haven’t slowed down adding new features and capabilities. Earlier this year marked the introduction of briefings, a slide-based storytelling format, that helps you communicate and tell stories in new ways. This month we’ve added more features to briefings, stories, and collections. Add tables and code to briefings

Configure analytics for briefings, show date for collections, hide story cover, more image formats, and more….

The ability to add tables to a story was added back in August 2023 , which happened to be the same time briefings were released in beta. These features have now come together and you’re able to add nicely formatted tabular information to your briefings.

It’s extremely useful to be able to summarize statistical data for an audience in a table or provide a status update in an easily digestible form. Check out this video see see how easy it is to create a table.

Additionally, the code block is available in briefings. If you have Python scripts, JavaScript code, CSS snippets, or code in another programming language, you can now paste them into a briefing to share with your audience. The code block is also a great way to share and explain Arcade scripts with your colleagues. You’ll probably want to take advantage of the built-in syntax highlighting, and you can add line numbers if they are helpful. Here’s an example of how to add code and configure the helpful options that are available.

You may be familiar with using Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics to track audience engagement with your stories. Now you can use these services to track views and other reader interactions for your published briefings as well.

The process for setting this up for a briefing is similar to how it works for a story. You’ll find a familiar looking Analytics tab in the Briefing settings where you can choose the analytics service you’d like to use and enter your configuration information.

Showing a date on the cover was something you have been able to do for stories and briefings, and now this is available for collections. Just hop into the Collection settings and select the date display option you’d like and the date will be visible to your readers.

We’ve heard from some advanced authors who sometimes want to create a story without a cover. While you can already do this in specific situations, like when you add a story to a collection or when you are embedding a story in another website, some people wanted a persistent way to hide the cover for a story. This option is now available in the story settings.

There are a few things to be aware of when activating this option. It is best used in a few specific situations, such as when creating a story for a demonstration you’re delivering or for an unattended kiosk at a museum, exhibit, or conference. Since important information about the story is hidden from viewers when this option is enabled, the story will not be eligible to appear in web search results so you’ll see that option disabled when you publish.

ArcGIS StoryMaps already supports five of the most common image file formats (JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and SVG), and you can now use more types of images including HEIC, HEIF, TIFF/TIF, and WEBP. These file types can be uploaded directly in the story, briefing, or collection builders without the need to convert them to another format first.

If you missed it, support was also added for more video and audio file types over the last few months. The list of supported video file types now includes MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM, MKV, and for audio the list is MP3, WAV, OGG, ACC, and M4A for audio.

We mentioned this last month, but a new featured theme is available for the upcoming 2024 Esri User Conference. Check it out in the featured theme gallery! Also, the maximum number of rows for a table in a story has been increased to 11, which includes the heading row, so you now have enough rows to create a “top 10” list.

Philadelphia mayor demands all city employees return to office: 'More visible'

PHILADELPHIA (TND) — Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker announced Monday all city employees will be required to return to in-office or on-site work by July 15.

Mayor Parker noted the change is “in alignment” with her administration's goal of “creating a more visible and accessible government.” She explained the move is intended to facilitate communication and collaboration between city workers.

"Employee presence at the workplace allows for more personal and productive interactions, facilitates communication, promotes social connection, along with collaboration, innovation and inclusion," Mayor Parker said.

The city will, however, “permit occasional remote work to address periodic life circumstances," according to a press release.

“I appreciate and expect everyone’s cooperation with this decision and understand that this transition will require some adjustment,” Mayor Parker said.

The new policy was not negotiated with the unions representing city workers, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer . The mayor's office did not confirm to The National Desk (TND) Monday whether union representatives were involved in the process.

A survey in February found over half of remote employees who receive orders to return to their workplaces would rather search for a new position than comply.

A separate survey by Resume Builder found 80% of companies will start tracking office attendance, with 95% threatening consequences for employees who do not comply with orders. The consequences include shrinking bonuses, changing benefits and salary reductions, according to the survey. One-third of the employers in the survey said they will fire people who do not go to the office when required.
