Photography Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

I have been fascinated by the power of the photographic image ever since I first saw Nick Ut’s famous ‘Napalm Girl’ picture of Kim Phuc. I was mesmerised that a simple picture could communicate such sadness, such power and such emotion. As I learned more about the shot, I discovered that the picture had gone far beyond that, changing attitudes thousands of miles away in the USA, and perhaps even changing the course of history. I knew then that I wanted to be a photographer myself.

You only have to look on image sites like Getty Images or Shutter Stock to see the vast range of ideas and emotions that can be captured by a photograph. Not only do pictures paint a thousand words, but they do so in an international language that everyone can appreciate.

It has not been easy to pursue my dream, especially with the high cost of decent photographic equipment, but I was not about to be put off so easily. The local Jessops knew they were on to a good thing when I started working for them at weekends, because they got back every penny I earned in purchases. Nonetheless, this has allowed me to put together a quite impressive set of kit.

My pursuit of a career in photography led naturally to me applying to study a photography course at college. The course is open to students of all ages and this has given me many different perspectives on the subject. My course has also given me access to a wider range of equipment than I was able to get when I was at school. I have been lucky enough to work with black and white and colour film, as well as the very latest in digital cameras. I have also learned basic film processing techniques, and have even persuaded my parents to black out the utility room window so I can practice at home.

My ambition is to become a press photographer overseas, and I would love to capture an iconic image like Nick Ut. However, I am also realistic and I appreciate that there will be a lot of weddings, local newspaper work and cheesey church fetes that I will have to photograph between then and now.

I have an artist’s eye, but sadly not an artist’s hands. I cannot draw or paint in any way that comes even close to the art I can create with my camera. Similarly, I am not particularly sporty, but I can take a cracking action shot of any match to go on the back page. Photography is who I am and what I do and I can’t imagine studying anything else or doing anything else as a career.

I know that this is a highly competitive industry, especially in the area that I would like to work, but I believe that I am good enough to compete and I am not afraid to work hard to get better and hone my craft. This course is the obvious next step for me, and I hope that you will consider my application favourably.

What art and design tutors are looking for

The underlying message is that tutors want to know about you, your practice, your inspirations, and your aspirations, and for your personal statement to act as written accompaniment to your portfolio and performance at interview.

How to make your art and design statement stand out

Admissions tutors prefer to read personal statements that don't stick to a predictable formula – here are a few tactics to ensure yours packs a punch.

  • Focus on the course: Martin Conreen, design admissions tutor at Goldsmiths, University of London, urges applicants for design courses 'not to over mention art' but to stay focused on design. He also feels some applicants waste too much space on non-relevant factors like their sporting achievements.
  • Your influences: Martin adds he wants to hear who your influences are, why they inspire you, and 'how their work has resonance with your own, or with your own ideas'.
  • Examples of what inspires you: David Baldry, fine art course leader at University Campus Suffolk, echoes this: 'Tell us what inspires you. We want to know what contemporary art interests you, so talk about key artists or an exhibition that made an impression on you. We want to know how you respond to the world creatively, so talk about your experiences or projects you’ve developed independently. Also, edit it so it sounds punchy'.
  • Demonstrate your artistic ambitions: Alison Jones, fine art admissions tutor at Goldsmiths, is looking for 'interesting individuals who have a passion for art and a commitment to developing themselves as artists. Therefore, your personal statement should demonstrate an understanding of your own work, focusing on what is unique about your practice'.
  • Be original: starting your statement with a well-known quote – such as 'fashion is not something that exists in dresses only' – is inadvisable. 189 applicants quoted that exact Coco Chanel snippet last year, so it really won't make you stand out from the crowd.

It's all summed up nicely by Arts University Bournemouth whose advice is:

'Be focused on the field you're applying for (no scattergun approach), name artists or designers you admire, think contemporary, reflect on exhibitions or galleries or events you've visited, and don't think "I'll tell them at the interview" – put it in the statement!'

Photography Personal Statement

Sample Photography Personal Statement

Photography has been my passion since childhood, but it has only been in recent years that I have been able to pursue it as a professional activity. Growing up in a communist country offered very few opportunities for aspiring photographers to gain access to the necessary equipment or the training, and the regime in its final years hardly encouraged professions that are grounded in freedom of artistic expression. And for many years of my adult life, professional photography equipment and film processing was simply too expensive. However, the revolutionary changes brought on by digital technology and the more general decrease in the price of advanced consumer electronics have meant that over the past few years I have finally had the chance to indulge my passion. Having spent a number of years carrying out some freelance photography work, and having also taken a diploma course in photography, I now feel that I have the skills and the portfolio to be able to complete a bachelor’s degree in photography.

My first introduction to photography came as a child, when my father allowed me to use his film camera. I was hooked on photography from the first moments that I learnt the basics of shutter speed and focal length, and whenever I had the opportunity I photographed virtually everything, relishing the opportunity of experimenting with different lights and types of shot. The majority of my training in the basics of photography came about through experimentation and self-study, a process which I feel has ultimately helped me to develop a highly intuitive approach to photography. However, I have always been eager to gain formal and professional training so as to benefit from the wisdom and experience of photography experts. As a child such opportunities were limited, but since I moved to the United Kingdom I have taken several different courses. Initially the classes I took were more informal and self-contained. Later, however, I took the First Diploma in Art and Design in Photography at Southwark College, an experience that really helped my understanding of different techniques and principles come on in leaps and bounds. I have also avidly read a wide range of books and magazines on photography, and I am a subscriber to both the British Journal of Photography and Digital Photo .

Over the last few years I have become increasingly committed to pursuing a career in photography. It has been a joy to set up my own website and develop a portfolio that contains a wide range of different landscape and portrait shots, in areas ranging from fashion to travel. I am pleased to say that I am also beginning to develop substantial experience in carrying out professional shoots, and have provided photographic services for a number of different individuals, organisations and events. In some ways my main day job of being a driving instructor has been a good preparation for the freelance life; through this work I am familiar with the importance of developing and maintaining good relations with clients, seeking out new opportunities for work and handling the financial aspects of self-employment.

It is my firm aspiration to become a full-time professional photographer. I believe that by studying photography at university I will gain a broad and deep understanding of photography as an art form, a profession, and an industry. My current philosophy of photography is based around a desire to capture the atmosphere at the moment through paying attention to the details of the shot, whilst also retaining a simplicity that ensures that my photographers have a powerful visual impact. I hope that through taking an advanced-level course in photography I will gain the skills that will allow me to fully realise this vision and in turn equip me for the demands of a career as a professional photographer.

Personal Statement - Fashion Design

Personal Statement:Fashion design

Throughout my whole life I had a priceless opportunity to observe the whole process of manufacturing clothes in my father‘s sewing factory. My passion for clothes was sparked when I was exploring the variety and uniqueness of materials and garments for the first time. This was the significant impact to my nowadays desire – study fashion design. I think that my exceptional style represents my creative personality and artistic skills that lead me to believe - fashion industry is the place where I want to be. The perception of my future began when my parents noticed that I was very interested in art. They let me to „ Mstislav Dobuzinskis Culture and Aesthetic Education Center” where I learned drawing/painting basics and developed my patience and sense of duty. But it was not enough for me, so I started taking private drawing lessons at one of the best teachers in Lithuania - Marija Danutė-Bžeskienė who gave me a real inspiration and new ideas for my future plans. Moved by the famous designers, fashion bloggers and magazines I started practicing by working as a freelance photographer, making hand-made accessories and creating clothes on my own and costume’s models for my dancing team. Furthermore, I participated in the competitions, organized by one of the most popular Lithuanian fashion magazine “Llofficiel” where I presented my own style and won the first place twice as well as granted self-confidence while feeling people’s support towards my personal style. During all this artistic practice work in my father’s sewing factory UAB “Tebesa” I gained a comprehension of clothes. I was working as a sales manager’s assistant/ clothes quality inspector for 3 months. It has taught me how to work in an intensive work environment and the quickness of preparing clothes for export. Moreover, I was helping a sale’s manager to create and select suitable garments for the majority so that provided me with an insight to people’s desires and wishes which is very important for working in a fashion world. Besides all my extra-curricular activities I was also active at school. I had an opportunity to participate in the illustration’s projects such as “Tavo žvilgsnis” and international project “P&P photography as a pedagogical tool “where my works were selected as one of the best. I was always the person who helped teachers with various projects, decorations and creating ideas for my school’s events and this gave me a great sense of responsibility while working with other students. However, I have grown up not only with the artistic hobbies. I had been doing gymnastics for 4 years and after finishing it I became more patient and got a pursuit of achieving the best results. After a little break my second passion became hip-hop dances and during this, I have participated in “World’s hip-hop championship” in Bremen where I had a chance to experience a team spirit which is very important while working in a company. My decision to study in the UK is not a coincidence. I think London is a perfect place for fashion design studies not only because it is known as one of the world’s fashion capitals, but also because of its prestigious universities, a wide range of different courses, worldwide events and fashion shows. At last, after all these explorations of myself I finally see my future vision clearly. I see a woman who is absolutely mad about fashion, loving her work in a worldwide company, trying to improve her skills as much as she can and is always seeking for perfection. She is never afraid of working hard and is always ready to put 110% of herself in everything she is working with. And I truly believe that Your University will make my dreams come true and I will be able to extend my abilities and originality to the daylight.

Graphic design photography personal statement example.

The main reason I came to England was to pursue my passion in Art and Design, to learn more about the different disciplines and to develop my creative thinking. My work is primarily concerned with communication and I deploy a broad range of approaches in its execution. I am particularly interested in combining photography with graphic design to communicate the message of the piece to a specific audience. It is for this reason that I am applying to do a BA degree to further my knowledge and understanding. I am currently on a Foundation Diploma course at the Arts University College Bournemouth where I have enjoyed exploring a range of disciplines such as fine art, photography, graphic design and 3D design. I have also discovered the importance of the creative process and gathering primary and secondary research. Through my self-initiated project I understand how this approach to research can push the boundaries of my work taking it to a more successful, informed and coherent outcome. I have also had the opportunity toimprove my life drawing and observational skills, these sessions have helped allow me to experiment with a range of mark-making techniques and made me really look and document the objects or model in a more focussed way, trying to get the weight and character of the model. My studies so far mainly integrate Graphic elements to theoverall project design. My consideration of Graphic Design is to communicate a message, an idea or concept to be able to get it across implementing crucial visual communication methods. Essentially, to me it is what Art and Design is all about; communication. I admire the work of Neville Brody as his work very strongly communicates with the audience using a combination of typography and photography. I have found this method of working extremely influential as I use both photography and graphics in my work. While at school I experimented with different disciplines in photography, including macro photography, which reflects on my constant interest of small and simple objects. Location photography which comes from my love of travelling, it also gives me endless opportunity to experiment with angles and lighting. Working in a studio always give me great satisfaction because of learning from experience and the opportunity of getting everything perfect and the way I envisage it. I am hard working and determined to achieve the best results possible - so I work until I get the result I desire. I have recently discovered the work of Jason de Graaf. I was excited to see that he not only used photorealism but also had a strong resemblance to the photography project I completed last year. The project involved researching and employing photographic techniques of high-speed photography, which would allow me to produce a series of works showing fast moving objects frozen in time.During the education I was awarded a highly commended status in fine art and photography. Last summer I spent the season doing interior decorating. This enabled me to gain valuable experience in working in a professional environment and team working. In my job I had to consider the implementation of colour theory to real life situations. With one job in particular I was responsible for a project where I had to design an abstract piece of work that would match the interior design of a house. I am also passionate about driving which helped me realise the importance of decision making and how vital it is to being focused on what you do. I participate in a range of sporting activities such as football, swimming and extreme sports which has a big influence on my life because I know that pushing myself and exceeding the limits is essential in gaining knowledge and achieving my aspirations. I am a hard working and motivated student who is keen to learn more about the subject area and do a course that will help me become a professional in the field of visual communication.
