The Weeknd's new music video is shot on the iPhone 16 Pro, with a mention that the slo-mo 4K resolution setting at 120 frames per second allows for the effect.

Better mics on iPhone 16 Pro

Apple says there are four studio-quality mics in the iPhone 16 Pro. This also allows for spatial audio capture. Coupled with the new Audio Mix feature, it uses AI to separate background noise from speech. In-app, you can choose what kind of mix you'd like, such as studio or cinematic.

iPhone 16 is going to be a gaming powerhouse

There's better thermal management with iPhone 16 and the A18 chip. This thermal management means 30% more gaming power, according to Apple. The company also highlighted hardware-accelerated ray tracing to give more realistic lighting in games. This type of lighting tech is usually very computationally expensive. Resident Evil 8 Biohazard and Assassin's Creed Mirage will come to iPhone 16. Apple says Honor of Kings Worlds from Tencent is also coming to iPhone 16 next year.

While it's cool console games are making their way to the iPhone, it doesn't seem that people really care . Releases of Resident Evil 4, Assassin's Creed Mirage and Death Stranding only sold a few thousand copies each.

Camera control sounds a bit like 3D touch

3d-touch

3D touch as seen on an iPhone 6S.

Do you remember 3D Touch on the iPhone 6S? The feature didn't catch on, but was meant to provide iPhone users additional controls with lighter or heavier presses. The new Camera Control feature on the iPhone 16 line, which makes use of lighter touches along with haptic feedback, might be a new take on bringing this feature back with a specific focus on improving photography.

The new camera control includes a haptic touch experience, where you can do light touches on the button in order to access specific settings.

Visual intelligence brings visual AI to iPhone 16

Visual Intelligence is a new feature that uses AI to scan the world around you. If you see a restaurant you like, you can take a picture of it and get restaurant hours and other information. Like Google's visual search, you can take a picture of a bike you want and get more details about what it is. Or, look up a breed of a dog. AI can also be used to look at homework problems and help you find a solution.

Create new custom emoji

Apple Intelligence will impact how you communicate on your phone. For example, you can  create new emoji  just by typing a description.

Apple Intelligence built on multiple AI models

Software chief Craig Federighi said Apple Intelligence is built on multiple AI models.

"Apple Intelligence draws on the immense power of our silicon to run multiple generative models on the iPhone in your pocket," he said. "These models are built by Apple and fine-tuned for your everyday iPhone experiences, and they adapt dynamically to your current activity. For more computationally intensive tasks, Apple intelligence can unlock even more intelligence with Private Cloud Compute. Private Cloud Compute maintains the privacy and security of your iPhone while giving you access to generative models much larger than what fits in your pocket today."

Apple talks up privacy in Apple Intelligence

Apple's software chief Craig Federighi said that Apple Intelligence is made possible by its custom A18 chip and other software. For more information on privacy, see what the company has said about its Private Cloud Compute  system.

AI writing tools

Apple event

Apple shows off priority notifications.

Like with Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones, new AI writing tools are coming to the iPhone 16. This means texting help and summarization; there's also emoji and image generation. Apple says generative image tools are integrated into apps. AI can also help you find specific images in your library. Slideshows can also be made with simple text prompts.

In Mail, AI can summarize your emails so that you can get a quick gist of what an email is about. This replaces seeing the first two sentences. AI is also used to see your most important notifications.

Apple threads AI throughout the iPhone 16

Apple really is going all-in on AI. It says that Apple Intelligence will be at the core of a lot of your iPhones functions, from messaging to photos. Like at WWDC, Apple repeats information on Private Cloud Compute. Whenever you use an AI task that requires more computing power, that data will be send over to Apple's data centers. To keep your data safe, Apple says this cloud computing is fully private and is open to outside groups to ensure that everything is safe.

Action button on iPhone 16

The iPhone 16 has a customizable action button that allows you to perform various functions, like recording a voice memo or translating phrases. Camera control is new on the iPhone 16. You can instantly access the camera by pressing a button and control camera features by sliding your finger.

iPhone 16 is made for Apple Intelligence

Apple says it's jumping two generations from the A16 to the A18 chip, skipping A17 altogether. This is to power the neural network with 17% more bandwidth. The A18 chip is built on a 3nm fabrication for more transistors at less power. It's 30% faster than the A16 chip. Apple says this challenges high-end desktop processors. It's a six-core processor with a five-core GPU.

Apple investors not yet impressed with new Watch and AirPods

applestock1035ampt.png

It's still early into this presentation...

Apple investors are not yet rewarding the company for news about its new Watch and AirPods. But that could be because these products were long-rumored and expected, so they're baked into the stock price. Stay tuned.

AirPods Pro 2 gets new health features

It doesn't seem like we'll get a new AirPods Pro 3 but Apple is bringing some health features to the AirPods Pro 2. Hearing protection uses the on-board chip to limit the amount of noise hitting your ears but while also ensuring you're still getting dynamic range. Apple also brings a hearing test via the AirPods Pro. It uses an app on your phone and you tab the screen when you can hear certain tones, which then gives you your hearing test results. This data will be securely stored on the Health app.

AirPods Pro 2 gets a hearing aid feature. After you take the hearing test, your AirPods Pro 2 can become hearing aids for those with moderate hearing loss. Your hearing profile is also applied to all of your devices.

There are two versions of the AirPods 4

Apple is introducing two versions of the AirPods 4. In addition to the base model, there's also a second version that looks similar but has active noise cancellation.

The regular model will run $129 in the US, while the AirPods 4 with ANC will cost $179. Both models will be available for preorder today and go on sale on Sept. 20.

AirPods Max

Apple has announced a slight update to its high-end AirPods Max headphones. Apple's over-the-ear headphones come in midnight, blue, purple, orange and starlight and charge via a USB-C port. The headphones are still $549 and can be preordered today.

Apple is moving quickly. After moving through the Apple Watch, we are now up to the new AirPods 4. There is a new design for the wireless buds, which packs an H2 chip that can support "personalized" spatial audio even with its open-air style.  The charging case is also Apple's "smallest" for AirPods and supports USB-C for wired charging. So long, Lightning.

No new Apple Watch Ultra 3, but Ultra 2 gets new color

Just because Apple showed off a cool video of the Apple Watch Ultra 2, but it's not a brand-new device. It's just now available in black titanium. Here's a rundown .

Tim Cook is kicking things off

We're officially underway at today's Apple event. CEO Tim Cook is starting the festivities and promising that we will hear updates on three products: Apple Watch, AirPods and iPhone.

The first one is the Apple Watch, which will turn 10 this year.

Tim Cook in Cupertino

The event has started!

Apple kicks things off with a sizzle reel featuring the iPhone, Apple Watch and other devices. People on screen are dancing and having a good time.

Are we due for a new iPad and iPad Mini?

iPad 2021 and iPad mini on green background

It's been two years since Apple's graced us with a new base iPad and three years since the last iPad Mini. It's about time these two tablets got a hardware refresh. Rumors have been circulating that Apple would reveal new iPad devices at this year's iPhone event. If rumors are true, expect spec bumps across the board, with better chips, screens and cameras. Although we suspect it's unlikely for a new iPad and iPad Mini to sport the same stunning OLED display of the iPad Pro .

The iPhone remains Apple's top moneymaker

In case you're wondering why these September iPhone launches still get so much attention, it's because the iPhone remains the top product by sales that Apple offers.

The iPhone brought in $39.3 billion in revenue, or 46% of sales in the fiscal third quarter, which ended June 29. The next biggest category is services, which accounted for $24.2 billion in sales. You can find the earnings details here .

Apple's fiscal year ends in September, so any preorders it can book this month help drive its fourth-quarter revenue and allow it to end its financial year on a high note, just as it enters the all-important holiday shopping season (October to December).

apple-q324vsq323.png

Apple's third-quarter earnings (left is 2024, column right is 2023) show how important the iPhone is to the company's success and how much it outpaces sales of the Mac, iPad and wearables.

This could be the last iPhone Plus

The back of the iPhone 15 (left) and iPhone 15 Plus (right)

The iPhone 15 Plus (right) is Apple's same-just-bigger model.

It seems that maybe iPhone shoppers are falling out of love with large screens. If reports from TF International Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo and Haitong International Securities' Jeff Pu turn out to be true, the iPhone 16 Plus may be the last of its kind. Apple may instead release a sleeker version of the iPhone 17 next year called the iPhone 17 Slim .

The problem is that the price gap between the iPhone 15 Plus and the iPhone 15 Pro was too small, so shoppers generally opted for the Pro, according to analysts. We won't know for sure until this time next year. But an iPhone 17 Slim could serve as a way to get consumers excited about the iPhone's design again, considering Apple doesn't sell a foldable iPhone.

The CNET team is waiting to enter Apple Park for Monday's event.

What's next for the Apple Watch?

Apple Watch Series 9

The iPhone 16 lineup will undoubtedly be the star of the show. But it's not the only product Apple will likely announce. The company is also expected to refresh all three Apple Watch models by announcing a new Apple Watch SE , the Apple Watch X (or 10) and Apple Watch Ultra 3, according to Bloomberg . It's the Apple Watch X that I'm most excited about.

The Apple Watch's design hasn't meaningfully changed in years, but that's reportedly going to change with the Apple Watch X. For most tech products, design may not be the most important factor. But for a gadget that you wear on your wrist, style is important, and I'm looking forward to seeing whether the Apple Watch X will have an eye-catching new design.

And then, of course, there's a whole laundry list of other things I'm hoping to see from the Apple Watch X , such as the Action button, new features for making better sense of health data and longer battery life.

Ready your ears for AirPods announcements

apple-airpods-third-gen.png

If you've outgrown your current earbuds, Apple's Glowtime event could bring two shiny new options. Rumor is that the tech giant will unveil a duo of AirPods models that could replace Apple's second- and third-generation AirPods . Support for USB-C charging and other design changes would feature in the fourth-gen wearables.

Monday's event will reportedly skip an AirPods Pro announcement. While the new models aren't expected to borrow the Pro's ear tips , the fancier of the two devices could offer noise cancellation. It could also include a speaker on the case, similar to the current second-gen AirPods Pro.

It's also possible that the Apple event will give its 4-year-old AirPods Max an upgrade, but changes may go no further than new shades and a USB-C port.

Apple's online store is down

Apple Store graphic

Apple's online store is down, just in time for the company's Glowtime event.

Apple's taken its online store down , which means that an availability shakeup is very likely to come from today's announcement. Typically, Apple's online store will go down in the lead-up to the company's product events, and then refresh afterward with all the details for any products that are announced.

Most likely, this will mean seeing the iPhone 13 retire out of the store, with price drops for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 line.

But if an older Apple product leaves the online store -- but you still want to buy it from Apple -- you might still see it in Apple's Certified Refurbished section or in its physical stores.

A foldable iPhone probably won't be unveiled and that might be a problem for Apple

foldable-iphone-photoshop-cnet

Until we get a real folding iPhone, we'll have to make do with my awful Photoshopped version.

The rumors suggest that this won't be the event where we finally see the arrival of a foldable iPhone . In fact the iPhone Flip, as many are calling it, is tipped to arrive as late as 2026. While Apple clearly doesn't mind being late to the party -- it wasn't the first to launch a smartphone, tablet, smartwatch or laptop, after all -- its delay in getting in on the foldable game is giving its rivals a chance to dominate the category.

Samsung is already in its sixth generation of foldable, while Google's new Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a solid improvement over its predecessor. Meanwhile, Motorola told CNET in 2023 that 20% of customers buying its Razr foldable jumped ship from Apple.

While Apple clearly doesn't think it's missed the boat, biding its time for so long may make it harder to enter the folding arena when companies like Samsung have already cemented themselves as the go-to foldable name.

Camera buttons, bigger sensors and longer zooms on all Pro models

xiaomi-14-ultra-promo-lanxon-cnet-review-01

iPhones always pack some of the best camera technology around, allowing them to take the sorts of images you'd normally expect to see from full-sized mirrorless cameras. Rumors have been circulating for months about what photography features we may see on the iPhone 16 range, but there are a few that particularly stand out.

One is the heavily rumored addition of a new dedicated camera button on the outside edge of the phone. This button would be especially geared toward photography, with multiple pressure levels allowing for a half press for focus, as you would on regular cameras. Some rumors also suggest it will recognise swipes, potentially allowing for you to swipe on the button to quickly zoom in or change other settings.

Beyond the new button, early tipsters have suggested the Pro models will get bigger camera sensors for the main camera. I'm keen to see this as larger image sensors allow for better dynamic range and overall better image quality. It's why the Xiaomi 14 Ultra with its huge 1-inch type image sensor is able to take stunning photos .

While numerous other camera rumors are flying around, one of the more pervasive is that the 5x optical zoom will be available on both the standard Pro and Pro Max model. Right now if you want the long zoom (which, as a photographer, I do) it means opting for the larger, more expensive phone. If this is true, you'll be able to go for the smaller more pocket-friendly iPhone 16 Pro without having to sacrifice camera performance.

Apple's late to AI and even later to foldables

mate xt ultimate design

Huawei's trifoldable phone, the Mate XT Ultimate Design, is set to be unveiled just hours after the iPhone 16. Is Huawei flexing?

In the coming hours, Apple is set to make its splashy foray into the world of generative AI for the iPhone 16. The iPhone maker is already late to the gen AI party, but it's even later to the foldable phone party. By contrast, Huawei is set to unveil the world's first trifoldable phone mere hours after Apple holds its Glowtime event for the iPhone 16, which doesn't fold.

Huawei's upcoming foldable highlights the progress rival companies have made in innovating this newer subcategory of phones. Apple's first foldable, meanwhile, is reportedly  not expected until 2025 at the earliest , with current rumors pointing to a flip phone. Huawei unveiled its first book-style foldable phone, called the Mate X, about five years ago. The Chinese tech giant's trifoldable phone, called the Mate XT Ultimate Design , is already up for presale in its native China. It reportedly racked up 2.7 million units in preorders on Monday, ahead of Apple's event.

The best parts of the iPhone 16 will be the small things

close up of the dynamic island on an iPhone with the words 16 Pro above

In just a matter of hours, Apple will hold its Glowtime event where the iPhone 16 and Apple Watch X will likely be revealed. Expect to see a lot of posturing and flexing from Apple execs about generative AI and Apple Intelligence. While today's keynote won't be all sizzle and no steak, try to look past the hype and slick presentation for the small things.

If you're someone who regularly watches or follows Apple events, try and remember what the big thing Apple revealed in 2022 with the iPhone 14 line. If you said the Dynamic Island , you'd be correct. Last year it was Apple switching the Lightning port over to a USB-C port on the iPhone 15 series. Both the Dynamic Island and the USB-C port are big things, but ask yourself if they significantly changed the way you used your iPhone. I find things like Standby mode, the updated autocorrect on the keyboard, the Check-In tool in Messages and the ability to copy image edits in the Photos app from one picture to another to have truly made an impact on the way I use my iPhone. In contrast, I rarely if ever plug my iPhone 15 Pro Max in with a USB-C charger and instead rely on wireless charging via MagSafe most of the time. Think about Emergency SOS via Satellite and how it has helped people who were injured or stranded without a cell signal get in contact with emergency responders.

So when the video starts for today's iPhone event keynote, keep an eye out for the little things, they tend to be the most significant.

Both Google and Samsung held live events, but will Apple?

hiner-tim-cook-sep-2023-apple-event-7

One of the lasting effects of the pandemic on the tech industry is how companies hold product launch events. Apple goes the pre-recorded video route with all the announcements filmed and edited well ahead of time. The company's event videos are dense with product details and slick shots. The Scary Fast Mac event last October was even shot entirely on an iPhone – along with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of lighting and gear. Absent from these videos are speakers walking on and off stage and in their place are elaborate transition shots where the camera seemingly flies through the air (and walls) transporting viewers from one part of the Apple Park campus to another in mere seconds. Over time, Apple's events have become 80-minute glossy product commercials which have lost much of the warmth and humanity that Tim Cook and his executive team added to pre-2020 keynotes that were done live on stage.

This year both Samsung and Google held phone launch events that were truly live. Company execs traveled on and off stage and recited from a teleprompter to introduce new products. There were some awkward moments, some jokes that didn't land well and even celebrity cameos that felt out of place but the keynotes felt authentic. Google even did live demonstrations onstage - most of which went well

Today Apple will hold its Glowtime event where we expect the iPhone 16 and Apple Watch X to be revealed. Will Apple go back to its live event roots? Or will Apple simply show another slickly shot video?

FineWoven RIP: What will Apple's iPhone 16 case be made out of?

A photo of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max with FineWoven cases

The iPhone 15 Pro Max (left) and 15 Pro with Apple's FineWoven cases. This was taken after a week of use.

Last year, in its quest to be more environmentally friendly Apple announced at its iPhone 15 event that it was going to stop making leather phone cases and introduced a new woven material, made of 68% postconsumer recycled content, aptly called FineWoven. Apple said that its FineWoven material has a significantly lower carbon footprint than leather and that it would use the material on its premium cases and accessories. All this sounds great, right?

Well turns out FineWoven iPhone cases bruise easily. Within a week, my iPhone 15 Pro Max's FineWoven case  had marks and stains on it. And I wasn't alone. Reviewers, YouTubers and consumers on social media shared photos and videos of the unexpected wear and tear their FineWoven cases had suffered.

Is FineWoven dead? Will the iPhone 16 be revealed along with a FineWoven 2 case? We'll have to wait until tomorrow's Glowtime event to find out. But if you're really jonesing for a non-leather woven case that you don't have to baby, check out Peak Design's Everyday Case which is made of nylon, doesn't easily collect stains or marks and costs $10 less than Apple's very similar looking $60 FineWoven case.

What could Glowtime mean?

Apple's Sept. 9 event was announced with the tagline "It's Glowtime." And while Apple's event invitations don't always correlate with the products that the company announces, the invitation does feature a logo with colors that skew closely to what will be used for the redesign of Siri, which will include a glowing border around the phone's display when summoned.

I go over my thoughts about how the Apple event invite might relate to Apple Intelligence at length in this commentary , but I'm also hoping that Apple might bring more creativity to the colors of its phone hardware with the iPhone 16 line. Last year's iPhone 15 came in several colors, but many of them skewed very closely to white. It would be great to see Apple dive into some more bolder color choices, especially after seeing Google's Pixel 9 launch with peony pink and wintergreen options.

Will AI steal the iPhone 16's spotlight?

Man standing in front of Apple Intelligence sign.

Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi introduced Apple's AI push as "Apple Intelligence" during a typically polished, pre-recorded presentation at WWDC 2024.

One of the defining characteristics of last month's Made by Google event was how the Pixel 9 lineup took a backseat at its own party, as the company focused instead on touting Gemini AI . It'll be interesting to see whether Apple takes a similar approach and allocates the bulk of its event to hyping up Apple Intelligence , or if it maintains a focus on hardware while weaving in sporadic mentions of AI. I'm hoping for the latter, since we got a heavy dose of AI (understandably) during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in June. So maybe the iPhone 16 , Apple Watch X and any other hardware Apple is likely to announce on Monday will really have its moment to shine.

Your iPhone's getting iOS 18, but you're probably not getting Apple Intelligence

The iPhone 15 Pro Max

Even though we're expecting to see Apple unveil its iPhone 16 series, it's likely that Apple will use its fall event to dive even further into the Apple Intelligence platform that was announced at WWDC 2024. And fascinatingly, while many different i Phone models stretching back to the iPhone XS and XR from 2018 will get iOS 18 , only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will get access to these AI features. Presumably the entire iPhone 16 line will also get Apple Intelligence, but we'll have to wait until Apple's event to truly find out.

If Apple can sell its Apple Intelligence features to its customers as an essential, then it might mark one of the bigger reasons to upgrade since so many of Apple's earlier iPhones are otherwise getting many of the other enhancements coming to iOS 18.

Everything Apple revealed at the iPhone 16 launch event: Apple Watch Series 10, AirPods 4, iOS 18 and more

If you didn't catch the event in real time, here are all of the details about apple's newest phones, smartwatches and earbuds..

September is here and, like clockwork, so are new iPhones. Apple unveiled its latest iPhone models at an event in Cupertino today, and as expected, the iPhone 16 handsets are largely iterative of last year's models. While the smartphones, standard and Pro versions, took center stage, Apple also showed off the new Apple Watch Series 10, two new pairs of AirPods and detailed hearing aid features coming to the second-generation AirPods Pro. The company also went into detail on its latest mobile chipsets that power the new iPhones, and reminded folks what they can expect when iOS 18 launches later this month with Apple Intelligence. If you weren't able to catch the announcements live, Engadget has you covered; here's everything announced at Apple's iPhone 16 event.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

Apple unveiled the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus at the event, which feature a water- and dust-resistant design and new colors including ultramarine, teal and pink. The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch display. Both of those can achieve up to 2,000 nits of brightness, and can go all the way down to 1 nit in the dark. The Action button has found its way to this series of iPhones as well, and it's just as customizable as the one we saw on last year's Pro-model iPhones.

There's also a new easy-access camera control "button" of sorts, which allows you to quickly control the camera with a slide of your finger. This tool can also tap into Visual Intelligence , an AI-powered feature coming in iOS 18 that can tell you more about anything you point your camera at. It appears similar to Google Lens, and can do things like add live event dates to your calendar after you point your camera at a flyer you see on the street. The camera array on the standard iPhone 16 models includes a 48-megapixel main Fusion camera, a 12MP telephoto lens and a new ultrawide camera with autofocus. This array will also be able to capture Spatial Photos that can be viewed on Apple's Vision Pro.

We confirmed in our hands-on text of the iPhone 16 that it has the same style of camera control button as the more expensive iPhone 16 Pro. It's a physical button, but haptics add another layer of feedback for when you make a "light press" rather than fully pressing the button down.

Both standard iPhone 16 models run on the new A18 chip , which has a 16-core neural engine optimized for generative models. The internals feature a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU, both of which will be crucial for powering all of the new Apple Intelligence features coming to iOS 18.

According to Apple, both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus have larger batteries than their predecessors, and when combined with the efficiencies added from the A18 chipset and iOS 18 improvements, should make for a much longer-lasting battery lives overall (although Apple did not provide an exact estimate). Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are available for pre-order today starting at $799 and $899, respectively, and will be widely available on September 20.

iPhone 16 hands-on: More Pro than I expected

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus

Iphone 16 pro and iphone 16 pro max.

The Pro series of iPhones includes the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max this year, which have 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch ProMotion, always-on displays, respectively. Both are made with Grade 5 Titanium, which Apple claims to be even lighter than stainless steel. These handsets will be available in four new colors: black, white, natural and desert, the latter of which resembles a dusty gold color.

According to the company, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence, being able to take full advantage of all the new features coming in iOS 18. These handsets run on the new A18 Pro chipset, which takes advantage of 3nm transistors and is even faster and more efficient than the standard A18 chip found in the regular iPhone 16 lineup.

The rear camera array on both models includes a 48MP Fusion camera, 48MP ultrawide shooter and a 12MP telephoto lens. The main camera's improvements allow for 4K, 120fps video and slow-motion recording. Both phones also have the new camera control button that provides easier access to the camera and all of its tools, both for capture and editing. There are also four studio-quality microphones built in to both smartphones for improved audio capture, and they allow for Spatial Audio recording, too.

Both the iPhone 16 Pro series and the standard iPhone 16 handsets supports Qi2 wireless charging, and Apple will come out with new MagSafe charging cases that account for the new camera control button. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will be available for pre-order on Friday, September 13, starting at $999 and $1,199, respectively. They'll be widely available on September 20.

AirPods 4 launched today during the iPhone 16 event, as rumors suggested. These have a redesigned bud shape that's suppose to fit more ear shapes and be more comfortable overall. They have the H2 chip inside, which will provide improved audio quality and enable features like Personalized Spatial Audio. The charging case has a USB-C port, and it's the smallest AirPods charging case to date.

In addition to the regular AirPods 4, there will be a second model that includes support for active noise cancellation and Transparency mode. Conversation Awareness will also automatically lower your media volume level when the buds detect you talking to someone. The standard AirPods 4 cost $129 and the AirPods 4 with ANC cost $179; both are available for pre-order today and will be widely available on September 20.

Apple announced new features coming to the second-gen AirPods Pro that are designed to help prevent (and increase awareness around) hearing loss. A feature called "Hearing Protection" will be turned on by default, and users will be able to take a clinically-validated hearing test to see if they already have some hearing loss. On top of that, AirPods Pro will have a clinical-grade hearing aid feature built-in as well, which will work with a hearing profile created after a user takes the hearing test.

Apple Watch Series 10

Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 10 today, the natural successor to last year’s Series 9. It has the biggest display and thinnest design ever on an Apple Watch, and the wide-angle OLED display is even a bit larger than that on the Apple Watch Ultra. The case has more rounded corners and a wider aspect ratio, both of which, combined with the larger screen, should provide more space to interact with graphics and text on the Watch. Apple claims the screen is 40 percent brighter when looked at from an angle, and it'll show a second hand ticking away even when your wrist is down.

The Apple Watch Series 10 is powered by the new S10 SiP chip, which Apple claims is built for performance, power efficiency and intelligence (i.e. Apple Intelligence). One example of Apple Intelligence at work on the Series 10 is the new Photos watch face, which will curate the best photos from your library and serve them up to you automatically.

When it comes to fitness features, Apple announced that the latest version of watchOS will allow the Series 10 to detect signs of sleep apnea, provided you're wearing your Series 10 to sleep regularly. Apple claims it's awaiting FDA clearance, and it expects the sleep apnea detection feature to launch in more than 150 countries. Elsewhere in the activity sphere, the Series 10 will have scuba tracking features and it will support the new Tides app in watchOS 11.

Another new feature is the ability to play audio directly from the Watch's speaker, which could be helpful if you don't have AirPods or another pair of Bluetooth earbuds handy. The Apple Watch Series 10 be available in a new polished, jet-black aluminum finish and new polished titanium finishes. It's available for pre-order today and will be widely available on September 20.

new apple watch presentation

Tim Cook: ( 04:29 ) Good morning, and thank you for joining us. I really love the incredible energy in that opening. It represents the way we feel about California. California has always been a place for people with big ambitions and big dreams, a place where people are fueled with optimism to make things better, to make things that can change the world. It is such an important part of who we are at Apple and inspires us in everything we create and do. We’re proud to call California our home. We have a lot to talk about today. Let’s get started with Apple TV+. Apple TV+ is a home to the world’s most creative storytellers and continues to expand with award-winning programming. Apple Original Series films and documentaries have now been honored with more than 130 wins and over 500 nominations in less than two years. We’re so proud this year that Apple TV+ has 35 Primetime Emmy nominations, including 20 for Ted Lasso, a record for the first season of a comedy series. And we’re just getting started. Let’s take a quick look at a few shows that are premiering this fall.

Speaker 1: ( 05:49 ) Thing will happen to you. Things that you cannot control. Raw emotion will find you. When it does, what you do will define who you are.

Speaker 2: ( 06:06 ) Our heroes reunite.

Speaker 3: ( 06:08 ) Hi.

Speaker 4: ( 06:08 ) My God.

Speaker 5: ( 06:09 ) Hi.

Speaker 6: ( 06:10 ) You okay?

Speaker 5: ( 06:10 ) Oh, yes.

Speaker 7: ( 06:11 ) I want to do something that matters.

Jon Stewart: ( 06:16 ) What the hell happened to my face?

Speaker 8: ( 06:30 ) Welcome back.

Speaker 9: ( 06:33 ) I’m going to compete with you, buddy.

Speaker 10: ( 06:38 ) Buddy?

Speaker 11: ( 06:38 ) They’re worried you can predict the future.

Speaker 12: ( 06:40 ) They’re worried people believe I can.

Jon Stewart: ( 06:44 ) My name is Jon Stewart. Welcome to the problem with Jon Stewart. We should put a comma in that.

Speaker 13: ( 06:50 ) The world needs to test us to see if it can break us.

Speaker 14: ( 06:59 ) He didn’t beat you because he’s better. He beats you because he’s smarter.

Speaker 15: ( 07:03 ) You think we’ll make it?

Speaker 16: ( 07:06 ) Not without my team.

Speaker 17: ( 07:14 ) I think I can help you. First thing I’m going to do is completely unethical. I’m going to give you a hug. I’m a hugger.

Speaker 18: ( 07:21 ) Remember to focus on the here and now. Living in the moment, it’s a gift. That’s why they call it the present y’all.

Tim Cook: ( 07:27 ) I can’t wait for all the new shows and movies coming to Apple TV+, including the second season of one of my favorites, The Morning Show, which starts this Friday. Next, we’re thrilled to share our newest product announcements, starting with iPad.

Tim Cook: ( 07:52 ) There’s no other device like iPad, and today it’s more popular and more essential than ever. And the reason it’s so popular is it’s amazing versatility. It can transform into whatever you need it to be. With advanced displays, users can literally touch their content unlike any other device. With powerful and efficient Apple design chips, iPad delivers breathtaking performance all day long.

Tim Cook: ( 08:22 ) And with fast conductivity, advanced cameras, and accessories, like the magic keyboard and Apple Pencil, iPad becomes even more versatile, extending what users can do on iPad and where they can do it. At the heart of it all is iPad iOS, delivering powerful features while maintaining the simplicity of a touch first experience. What makes iPad even more versatile are the over 1 million apps designed specifically for its large canvas. The iPad business has never been stronger. We’ve gone by over 40% this past year. We have a great lineup today with industry leading customer satisfaction, and it’s about to get even stronger. It starts with our most popular iPad, which delivers the full iPad experience at an incredibly affordable price. And today, it gets even better. This is the new iPad. And to tell you all about it, here’s Melody.

Melody Kuna: ( 09:48 ) This new iPad is packed full of updates. So let’s jump in. Under the hood is a more powerful chip, A13 Bionic, and it pushes even further than the speedy A12 from last year’s iPad. With 20% faster performance in every aspect of the chip, from the CPU and GPU, to the neural engine, A13 is leaps ahead of the competition. In fact, it makes this iPad up to three times faster than the best-selling Chromebook and up to six times faster than the best-selling Android tablet.

Melody Kuna: ( 10:22 ) And it means users will see even more responsive performance for all the things that they love to do on iPad. From everyday uses like messaging and browsing the web, to playing immersive high quality games. And as users explore more advanced apps like Adobe Fresco with its super realistic watercolors, A13 delivers the performance they need and then some. And the more powerful neural engine in A13 makes next generation machine learning experiences, like live text in iPad iOS 15, even faster.

Melody Kuna: ( 10:54 ) The upgraded image signal processor in A13 also means the rear camera captures great photos with improved auto focus in low light and better selfies from the front camera as well. Now, the front camera on iPad is essential for things like remote learning and connecting with family. And that’s why we’re so thrilled to give it a big upgrade. It’s now a 12 megapixel Ultra Wide camera that produces a huge leap in image quality and enables a super popular feature from iPad Pro. And that’s Center Stage. We’re bringing the magical Center Stage experience from iPad Pro to this new iPad.

Melody Kuna: ( 11:35 ) Enabled by the Ultra Wide front camera and the neural engine, Center Stage makes video calls more engaging by automatically detecting people and dynamically adjusting the frame as they move around or as more people join it. It works in landscape orientation and portrait. So users can enjoy center stage in all the ways they use iPad.

Melody Kuna: ( 11:55 ) Not only does Center Stage work in FaceTime, it makes video calls more natural in other popular apps like Zoom, BlueJeans, and WebEx. And it’s not just for video conferencing. Users can record, stream, and post Center Stage video in apps like Double Take, Explain Everything, and TikTok. It makes you more productive on iPad and it’s simply more fun.

Melody Kuna: ( 12:18 ) Another new feature coming to this iPad that users love is True Tone. It adjusts the display to the color temperature of a room to provide a more comfortable viewing experience. And by retaining the same popular design, this iPad supports a vast array of accessories, including the thin and light smart keyboard. And third-party keyboards like Logitech;s latest rugged combo with trackpad for schools. And of course, this iPad supports the First Generation Apple Pencil, where iPad OS makes the experience of using Apple Pencil as easy and natural as pen and paper.

Melody Kuna: ( 12:53 ) And this new iPad will ship with iPad OS 15, which is packed with great new features. For example, you can place widgets among your apps, making important information available with just a glance. New multitasking controls make it even easier to launch and use multiple apps. Quick Note gives you a fast and easy way to take notes anywhere. And the list goes on. iPad OS is so immensely capable and so easy to use. When you combine it with a beautiful display, great cameras, broad accessory support, gigabit class LTE, and all day battery life, this iPad delivers enormous value because this new iPad starts at just $329. And that’s with twice the storage, starting at 64 gigabytes. For schools, it’s even more affordable at just $299. It comes in space gray and silver and cellular models are available as well. You can order the new iPad today and it will be available next week. With the power of A13 Bionic, a new 12 megapixel Ultra Wide front camera, with Center Stage, True Tone, double the storage, and the versatility of iPad OS 15, this is a giant upgrade for our most popular iPad. Now, back to Tim.

Tim Cook: ( 14:17 ) We’re excited that our most popular iPad is now so much better. And now let’s talk about iPad Mini, there’s simply no other device like iPad Mini. It gives users all the power of iPad in its most portable form, which makes it indispensable for a wide range of uses. Like when it’s secured to the leg of a pilot in flight or pulled from a doctor’s lab coat to care for patients in the ER. iPad Mini is in a class of its own. And today, we’re giving our littlest iPad it’s biggest upgrade ever. Introducing the all new iPad Mini.

Katie McDonald: ( 15:15 ) As Tim said, we’re giving iPad Mini a huge set of updates. A complete redesign that puts everything our users love about iPad, right in the palm of their hand.

Katie McDonald: ( 15:28 ) The all-new enclosure features a beautiful all screen design with narrow borders and elegant rounded corners. The design is remarkably thin and light and absolutely stunning. An iPad Mini now comes in a gorgeous array of new colors, purple, pink, starlight, and space gray. And this design features a brilliant liquid retina display. With this new design, we were able to increase the screen size all the way out to 8.3 inches, while keeping the same compact footprint. With wide color, True Tone, 500 nits of brightness, and the lowest reflectivity in the industry, everything you view on iPad Mini will look great wherever you go. And delivering this edge to edge screen meant finding a new location for Touch ID.

Katie McDonald: ( 16:21 ) So just like iPad Air, we put it right in the top button of iPad Mini. Touch ID is fast, easy, and secure, whether you’re unlocking your iPad or using Apple Pay. iPad Mini is already the fastest device of its kind. And the performance of the new iPad Mini is simply remarkable. Compared to the previous generation, the new iPad mini sees a 40% jump in CPU performance and a whopping 80% leap in GPU performance. So whether you’re using ForeFlight to navigate your flight plan with live wind speed overlays or playing the graphically rich game, Star Wars Hunters online with your friends, the new iPad Mini will power right through it with ease.

Katie McDonald: ( 17:13 ) And the neural engine for powerful machine learning applications also takes a big leap forward on the new Mini, increasing performance by up to two times over the previous generation. Combined with the CPU and the GPU, the neural engine enables apps to deliver next level experiences, like the new Translate app in iPad OS 15, which can automatically translate a conversation in real time. The performance of the new iPad Mini is on a whole new level.

Katie McDonald: ( 17:47 ) And we know that iPad users rely on ultra fast connections. Well, the most mobile iPad is about to get a lot faster and even more versatile. iPad Mini now has a USB-C port. So you get the same great USB-C functionality that we brought to iPad Air, which means it’s up to 10 times faster than its predecessor. So iPad Mini can now connect to a vast ecosystem of USB-C accessories, which is great. Whether you’re a photographer who needs to connect to cameras when shooting on location or a doctor in a remote area using Butterfly to conduct an ultrasound. And when users are on the go, it’s crucial to have access to the fastest cellular connections. And that’s why we’re bringing 5G to iPad Mini. Download speeds can be up to 3.5 gigabits per second. This is key when you need to stay connected on the go, like when technicians use Splunk AR on-site to access real-time data, performance analytics, and complex schematics, or if you’re using SharePlay to take a master class with your friends, 5G keeps you connected.

Katie McDonald: ( 19:04 ) Next, let’s talk about the cameras and audio. Users rely on iPad Mini for FaceTime, taking photos and videos, and experiencing AR. So we’ve updated both the front and back cameras. The back camera now features a 12 megapixel sensor with focus pixels and a larger aperture to capture sharp, vivid photos. And we added a True Tone flash to Mini for improved photos in low light. With a new ISP, users will see enhanced photos with Smart HDR, which improves image quality by recovering details in shadows and highlights. And now with the ability to record in 4K, iPad Mini becomes your mobile movie studio.

Katie McDonald: ( 19:48 ) On the front, iPad Mini features the new 12 megapixel Ultra Wide camera, which means it also supports Center Stage. As Melody mentioned, this has been a huge hit on iPad Pro and now it’s coming to iPad Mini. And iPad Mini also features a new speaker system with stereo in landscape. Great for listening to your favorite playlist or doing an Apple Fitness+ workout in your hotel room.

Katie McDonald: ( 20:18 ) An iPad Mini’s versatility is further enhanced by its amazing accessories. There’s a new set of slim SmartFolio covers in beautiful coordinating colors that compliment the new iPad Mini finishes, perfect for expressing your personal style. And now, iPad Mini supports the amazing Second Generation Apple Pencil, which magnetically attaches to the side of iPad Mini. So it’s always connected, charged, and with you. Apple Pencil transforms iPad Mini into your digital sketchbook. We’re so excited about the new iPad Mini. Let’s see it in action.

Katie McDonald: ( 22:30 ) With it’s all new design and huge boost in performance, the new iPad mini starts at just $499 and it will be available in both wifi and cellular configurations. You can order it today and it will be available next week.

Katie McDonald: ( 22:46 ) So this is the all new iPad mini, featuring a brilliant liquid retina display, super fast performance, new cameras front and back, Center Stage, 5G, support for Apple Pencil and all new colors. With all of these new features, this is by far the most powerful and versatile iPad mini ever.

Katie McDonald: ( 23:16 ) And with both the new iPad and iPad mini, we continue our commitment to the environment. Both of these iPad models are built with a 100% recycled aluminum enclosure. And this marks a milestone for iPad, every single iPad in the lineup now features a 100% recycled aluminum enclosure. This is just one of the many ongoing efforts we have underway to reduce the environmental impact of our products. Now, back to Tim.

Tim Cook: ( 23:44 ) Whit the even more capable new iPad and the phenomenal new iPad mini, our iPad lineup is the best it’s ever been. Next, let’s talk about Apple Watch. Apple Watch is an indispensable daily companion that keeps you connected to the people and things you care about most. It encourages you to be active and get more out of your workouts, and it monitors your health, helping you live a better day. I am so inspired by the impact we’ve had on people’s lives, and we continue to push the boundaries of what Apple Watch can do. To tell you about what’s next, here’s Jeff.

Jeff Williams: ( 24:37 ) Being more active is one of the best ways to stay healthy, and it’s been at the heart of Apple Watch since the beginning. Well today, we’re adding new features to Apple Watch for everyone who rides a bike.

Jeff Williams: ( 24:51 ) Watch OS8 will detect when you begin riding and remind you to start a workout, and it will automatically pause and resume if you stop temporarily. And Watch OS8 adds fall detection to cycling by sensing the unique motion and impact of falls while riding a bike. And Apple Watch now better supports e-bikes with an improved workout algorithm that more accurately calculates calories.

Jeff Williams: ( 25:15 ) These cycling updates join all the other great additions in Watch OS8, like the mindfulness app and Memories and Photos. And this year we focused on making these features and everything you do on Watch bigger and better. Introducing the next generation of Apple Watch.

Jeff Williams: ( 25:58 ) [inaudible 00:25:58] This is the incredible Apple Watch Series 7. It takes all the great features of Apple Watch and combines them with our largest and most advanced display ever. The new retina display on Series 7 has nearly 20% more screen area than Series 6, and it’s an even bigger jump over Series 3 with over 50% more screen area.

Jeff Williams: ( 26:35 ) The Series 7 display has been completely re-engineered to reduce the borders to just 1.7 millimeters, that’s 40% thinner than on Series 6. It’s an incredible innovation that maximizes the screen area while barely changing the dimensions of the watch itself. And the shape of the watch has also been refined, both the case and the display of Series 7 have softer, more rounded corners. The new display refracts light at its edges for a subtle wraparound effect, creating a seamless integration with the curvature of the case. And it’s also up to 70% brighter indoors when your wrist is down, making it even easier to discretely check the time. This new display is an industry first, and we fully optimized the user interface for it. Here’s Lauren to tell you more.

Lauren Braun: ( 27:26 ) Across the user interface on Series 7 buttons have been redesigned and enlarged to compliment the size and shape of the new display. Like in Stopwatch, Activity, and Alarms, making them even easier to tap. It can also fit nearly 50% more text on screen than Series 6. This helps you read messages and emails with a lot less scrolling.

Lauren Braun: ( 27:51 ) Series 7 also features new ways to input text. There’s a full keyboard that you can either tap or slide from letter to letter with Quick Path, which uses machine learning to predict the word you’re typing. There are also new watch faces designed specifically for Series 7. The dynamic contour face animates on wrist raise, pushing the dial right out to the edge. And a new modular face leverages the extra screen area with two large data rich center complications. All of these improvements give Series 7, the best user experience of any Apple Watch.

Lauren Braun: ( 28:33 ) We also improved durability, which is another essential aspect of Apple Watch. Series 7 is the most durable Apple Watch we’ve ever built. It has our most crack resistant front crystal, thanks to a stronger and more robust geometry. It’s also the first Apple Watch to have IP6X certification, so you don’t have to worry about wearing it and dusty environments. And of course, it’s still swim- proof with WR50 water resistance.

Lauren Braun: ( 29:03 ) With our best ever durability, you can take Series 7 anywhere you want to go, and use it all day long with the same great 18 hour battery life. Series 7 also has an improved charging experience. It charges up to 33% faster than Series 6. With an updated charging architecture and new fast charging USB-C cable, it takes just 45 minutes to go from 0 to 80% charge. And eight minutes of charging is enough for eight hours of sleep tracking. We think customers will love the optimized user interface, best ever durability and faster charging of Series 7. Now back to Jeff.

Jeff Williams: ( 29:48 ) Series 7 will be available in five new aluminum colors, midnight, starlight, green, blue, and product red. It will also be available in silver, graphite and gold stainless steel as well as natural and space black titanium. Apple Watch Nike models feature a new graphic sport loop and Nike Bounce watch face. And, there’s a new Apple Watch Hermes Circuit H leather band with matching face, plus an elegant new Double Tour band.

Jeff Williams: ( 30:17 ) Now of course, bands are a great way to customize your Apple Watch for any activity or occasion. So we’ve added new colors across our most popular styles, and Series 7 is compatible with all existing bans. We’ve designed Series 7 with the environment in mind. All aluminum watch cases are made with 100% recycled metal and all magnets in Series 7 use 100% recycled rare earth elements.

Jeff Williams: ( 30:42 ) So here’s our 2021 Apple Watch lineup. Series 3 remains at the great entry price of $199. Apple Watch SE starts at $279, and Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $399. Series 7 will be available later this fall and we can’t wait for you to try it. Here’s another look at some of the amazing capabilities of Apple Watch Series 7.

Speaker 19: ( 31:12 ) To live is to ask the big questions, like, why are we here? What is our purpose? And whoa, how fast was that serve? Ninety-eight miles per hour. Nice. But I was thinking about… Wow, I’m sorry. Hi there. How far was that drive? 250 yards!

Speaker 19: ( 31:33 ) Okay, getting back to my point. I mean, haven’t you ever wondered-

Speaker 20: ( 31:40 ) How far have I gone?

Siri: ( 31:40 ) Five miles. Average speed 12.4 miles per hour.

Speaker 19: ( 31:40 ) This is how far are you’ve gone, but I was actually thinking… Wait, are you taking an ECG here? And you’re taking one here? Are you taking an ECG next to a pinata? Heads up!

Speaker 19: ( 31:54 ) Oh, hi. We’re surfing. Wow. That’s just, that’s just impressive. Wait, how many waves you get? Fifteen waves?

Speaker 19: ( 32:03 ) Oh, good morning. How’d you sleep? Why are you checking your blood oxygen level? Oh, that’s why.

Speaker 19: ( 32:13 ) Okay, let’s get back to the big questions like, are the mysteries of the universe out of reach or can we discover the answers through the power of meditation? Oh, come on now! You know you’re levitating, right?

Speaker 19: ( 32:25 ) Sorry, don’t mind me. Anyway, there are questions and it seems like your watch has all the answers, which is cheating.

Jeff Williams: ( 32:34 ) So, that’s Apple Watch Series 7. It has the largest and most advanced display ever, an optimized UI with new keyboard and watch faces, best ever durability, fast charging, new colors, and all the great features of watch OS8. Jay Blahnik: ( 39:54 ) And that’s Fitness+. Back to Tim.

Tim Cook: ( 40:07 ) With Apple Watch Series 7, the most advanced SmartWatch ever, and the incredible new content and features in Apple Fitness+, we can’t wait to see the impact they’re sure to have on our users’ lives.

Tim Cook: ( 40:20 ) Now let’s talk about iPhone. iPhone has forever changed the world. Every single day people rely on iPhone, from their most demanding tasks to capturing the moments of their lives, streaming their favorite TV shows, playing their favorite games, staying up to date with the news of the world and connecting with friends and loved ones.

Tim Cook: ( 40:42 ) This is what drives us to create the best iPhone possible. To create an experience unlike any other, with legendary ease of use, beautiful and durable designs with water resistance and great battery life, with industry leading performance and the world’s most advanced camera systems, and with privacy built in. People love iPhone, and we keep making iPhone better, more powerful, more capable, and even more fun to use. Today, we are thrilled to introduce our next generation of iPhone. Here it is.

Tim Cook: ( 41:54 ) [inaudible 00:41:54]

Tim Cook: ( 41:55 ) This is iPhone 13. To tell you more, here’s Kianne.

Cayenne: ( 42:24 ) Let’s take a closer look at, iPhone 13, starting with design. It has the sleek, flat edge design that people love. It’s also incredibly durable with our exclusive ceramic shield front, tougher than any smartphone glass, and has industry leading IP 68 water resistance. iPhone 13 has a new look for the advanced dual camera system, with the lenses arranged diagonally. The aerospace grade aluminum frame is beautifully formed and really shows off five new colors, an all new pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and (PRODUCT) RED. On the front the true depth camera system has been re-engineered to provide more display area. Everything inside, including face ID, the most secure facial authentication in a smartphone, fits into a space that’s 20% smaller. iPhone 13 is designed with the environment in mind, using many recycled materials. For example, these antenna lines use up-cycled plastic water bottles, an industry first.

Cayenne: ( 43:36 ) Under the hood, iPhone 13 has been completely rearchitected to make room for new technologies and a bigger battery. This beautiful design is the same across two sizes, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Both feature a more advanced super retina XDR display. It’s 28% brighter, up to 800 nits. Brilliant for viewing, even when you’re outside. For HDR content, like photos and videos, the peak brightness is higher at 1200 nits. And you can enjoy the pixel precision brightness for longer, thanks to the displays, improved power efficiency. You’ll see true blacks in games, photos, and videos with the incredible contrast ratio of our OLED display. This new brighter super retina XDR display delivers an immersive viewing experience with support for Dolby Vision HDR 10 and HLG. Now let’s talk about the chip that powers iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Frankly, the competition is still playing catch up to our chips, not just from last year, but even from two years ago. And today we’re extending our lead with A15 Bionic. Here’s Hope to tell you all about it.

Hope: ( 45:08 ) Our silicon is the engine of iPhone. With A15 Bionic, we have innovations across the entire system to deliver more performance and power efficiency. At its foundation, A15 uses five nanometer technology, which enables us to include nearly 15 billion transistors. You’ll absolutely fly through demanding workloads smoothly and efficiently, thanks to a powerful new six core CPU with two high performance. And four high efficiency cores. We’ve increased the performance of our CPU’s dedicated machine learning accelerators, that power experiences such as advanced text-to-speech in Siri and on-device processing of directions in maps. It’s the fastest CPU in any smartphone, up to 50% faster than the leading competition. For graphics intensive tasks like advanced games, A15 Bionic features our latest 4-core GPU, enabling more eye-catching visuals and lighting effects. It delivers up to 30% faster graphics versus the leading competition. And we continue to push the limits of machine learning with the new 16-core Neural Engine that is perfect for ML tasks.

Hope: ( 46:24 ) It’s capable of an astounding 15.8 trillion operations per second. We designed our Neural Engine together with our camera hardware and software teams. This unique vision and integration brings to life leading capabilities in video and image processing. This means faster ML computations for experiences like live LiveText with iOS 15, point your camera at texts on the go and instantly take action like buying tickets or getting directions. The ML advancements across our entire chip will empower developers to do even more in their apps, like swing vision, which can smoothly run powerful core ML and AR models on A15 Bionic, for real-time shop tracking, video analysis, and remote coaching. PeakVisor helps you navigate the outdoors to identify mountains and explore detail rich 3D maps while hiking. And Seek uses a machine learning model trained by over 20 million photos, to instantly identify plants and animals around you and all the processing is done on device. A15 is a powerhouse. In addition to core performance improvements, there’s a new display engine, new video encoder and decoder, and twice the system cache. There’s nothing in the world like this chip. Back to Cayenne.

Cayenne: ( 47:54 ) A15 Bionic also powers the amazing camera system on iPhone 13. It combines our powerful cameras, next generation image signal processor and computational photography to create our most advanced dual camera system. The all new wide camera lets you take stunning shots in any situation. Like this photo full of color and texture. It gathers 47% more light for less noise and brighter results in your photos and videos. This is enabled by larger 1.7 micron pixels that capture more light and a wide f/1.6 aperture. It’s the biggest sensor we’ve ever put in our dual camera system. iPhone 12 Pro Max introduced an amazing advanced technology, sensor-shift optical image stabilization, and incredibly we are bringing this to iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Here’s a light photo from the new wide camera with censorship OIS. The larger sensor captures nearly 50% more light, hard to believe this photo was taken in a dark room with just a little light coming through a window.

Cayenne: ( 49:09 ) Night mode shots are even more impressive. Capture times are shorter too, for sharper images of your subjects and fine details. We’ve also custom designed a new Ultra Wide camera that will reveal more of the dark areas with less noise. Like you see here in the walls and ceilings. Capturing fun creative perspectives is easy with the Ultra Wide and now it’s even better on iPhone 13. Now let’s switch to video, iPhone already has the highest quality video in a smartphone. And iPhone 13 brings a brand new feature, Cinematic mode. Now over to Johnny to tell you more.

Johnny: ( 49:51 ) Filmmakers have used focus changes to tell engaging stories for decades. It’s a technique called rack focus, that requires skill planning and creative vision. You’ve seen rack focus used in all your favorite films. It brings a whole new dimension to storytelling. Well we’re bringing this capability to iPhone, in a simple and intuitive way, so you can capture cinema style moments even if you aren’t a professional filmmaker. And guess what the movie clip you just saw was shot on iPhone and we’d love to show you more.

Johnny: ( 51:44 ) (movie playing). It’s remarkable and so easy to use. Just start recording and cinematic mode will hold focus on the subject, even when they’re moving. Focus transitions happen automatically in real time, like from one subject to another. Cinematic mode anticipates when a subject is about to enter the frame and intelligently racks focus to them when they do. And when a subject gazes away from the camera, iPhone itself changes focus and then back, to create these automatic focus changes. We extensively studied the art of cinematography and the creative choices directors of photography make to guide the viewer’s attention. We combine these learnings with computational algorithms so you can effortlessly create cinema great videos. For more creative control, you can tap to shift focus at any time, tap again to lock and track focus on the subject. Cinematic mode shoots in Dolby Vision HDR. This is enabled by your Apple custom sensor and the incredible power of A15 Bionic, which grades each frame in Dolby Vision live while you are recording. And that’s cinematic mode. Now back to Cayenne.

Cayenne: ( 53:03 ) iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have advanced new camera systems with sensor-shift OIS, fantastic low-light performance, and cinematic mode also on the front true depth camera. Next let’s turn to 5G. Millions and millions of iPhone users are already experiencing 5G every day for super fast downloads and uploads, lower latency, and new experiences on the go. And on iPhone 13, we’ve innovated further on custom design antennaes and radio components that let us add more bands, so iPhone 13 works on 5G with the latest speeds and in more places. The world is moving quickly to 5G. We’re collaborating with more carrier partners for the best call quality, performance, coverage, and battery life. By the end of the year, we will double 5G support to over 200 carriers in 60 countries and regions. That means you can benefit from 5G in more places than ever to binge watch your favorite shows together using SharePlay on Apple TV + and even more streaming partners for video and music.

Cayenne: ( 54:19 ) You can be ultra competitive in multiplayer games, share surprise greetings from a celebrity in high rez over Cameo, or take the sound at any live event to a whole new level with mixed halo. 5G is taking over and iPhone 13 is ready with the best 5G experience.

Cayenne: ( 54:40 ) Now let’s talk about battery life, which is really important to our users. iPhone 13 has a faster chip, faster 5G speeds, a brighter OLED display, and the most advanced dual camera system ever in an iPhone. And with all these new capabilities, the iPhone 13 lineup has better battery life. On iPhone 13 mini most users will experience an hour and a half longer in their day than with iPhone 12 mini. And on iPhone 13 two and a half hours longer than iPhone 12 for incredible all day battery life. This amazing battery life is delivered by A15 Bionic, more power efficient components, a bigger battery, and power optimizations from our deep hardware and software integration, like smart data mode, which intelligently conserves battery life by automatically shifting your iPhone to LTE when 5G speeds aren’t needed.

Cayenne: ( 55:42 ) We also look at every opportunity to improve privacy. With iPhone and iOS privacy is built in from the beginning. With iOS 15, Siri uses on device speech recognition, meaning your Siri audio requests do not leave your iPhone by default. Intelligent tracking prevention, now prevents trackers from profiling you using your IP address and mail privacy protection hides your IP address and prevents senders from learning about your mail activity. Another huge benefit of owning an iPhone is the vast ecosystem that extends what iPhone can do. That includes MagSafe, which we introduced last fall and has been a hit. From multi chargers and swiveling charger stands, to cases, wallets, tripods, and car mounts, along with our own accessories for charging, like the MagSafe battery pack. For iPhone 13, we have leather, silicone, and clear cases in stunning new colors and engineered to work perfectly with MagSafe.

Cayenne: ( 56:48 ) We also have a new MagSafe leather wallet that supports Find My. You can now be notified of the last known location where your wallet was separated from your iPhone. iPhone 13 is loaded with new technologies, including cinematic mode, A15 Bionic that’s faster than the competition, our most advanced dual camera system with sensor-shift OIS, longer battery life, 5G, and so much more.

Cayenne: ( 57:19 ) With all this iPhone 13 still starts at just $699. We also have some fantastic offers from Apple and our partners, including up to $700 off in the US when you trade in a qualifying iPhone. And we’re increasing the starting capacity to 128 gigabytes for double the storage and adding a new 512 gigabyte option. iPhone 13 is impressively powerful. Let’s see it in action.

Cayenne: ( 59:28 ) (video playing) Now back to Tim.

Tim: ( 59:47 ) We are so excited for iPhone 13, with all of its power and capability, we can’t wait to see what our customers will do with it. And we’re not done yet. Our pro lineup pushes the limits with our most advanced technologies for our users who want the very best iPhone, best in class performance, best in class camera experience, great durability, larger displays, an incredible design. This year, we build on that in a major way. Let’s take a look at our most Pro iPhone ever.

Tim: ( 01:00:31 ) ( video playing) This is iPhone 13 Pro. To tell you more here’s Jaws.

Jaws: ( 01:01:33 ) iPhone 13 Pro features out most pro design. With exceptional materials, like these surgical grade stainless steel bands. Each band goes through a physical vapor deposition process to create an Apple custom finish that is so elegant yet incredibly resistant to abrasion and corrosion. iPhone 13 Pro comes in four striking finishes. A rich deep graphite, gorgeous gold, beautiful silver, and this all new Sierra blue. The Sierra blue required an entirely new process using multiple layers of nanometer scale metallic ceramics applied across the surface for a stunning and very durable finish.

Jaws: ( 01:02:13 ) iPhone 13 Pro has a newly designed front, with a true depth camera system that’s 20% smaller. On the back you’ll see our incredible new camera system with beautiful stainless steel trim that perfectly surrounds the sapphire crystal lenses of each of our three new cameras. And a beautiful textured matte glass that feels great and shows off the stunning color. On the front it has our incredible ceramic shield that is tougher than any smartphone glass. It also has industry leading IP 68 water resistance. On the inside, it’s been completely redesigned to support our latest pro technologies, including the all new camera system, incredible new display and a bigger battery. iPhone 13 Pro also supports MagSafe and the ever expanding ecosystem of really cool new accessories.

Jaws: ( 01:03:02 ) … Ever expanding ecosystem of really cool new accessories. And it’s joined by the larger iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Jaws: ( 01:03:07 ) Now, let’s talk about performance and the powerful, new, A15 Bionic. As you heard from Hope, A15 Bionic features a CPU with two new high-performance cores, and four new high efficiency cores, and a faster neural engine, as well as our new ISP, which provides improved noise reduction, and tone mapping.

Jaws: ( 01:03:27 ) And for these Pro models, A15 Bionic includes our most powerful graphics ever, with a new five core GPU. It provides up to 50% faster graphics performance than the leading competition. In fact, iPhone 13 Pro has the fastest graphics performance in any smartphone ever. Great for high performance gaming, and our most powerful camera features, like apple ProRaw, and 4k Dolby Vision video. And the A15 Bionic chips, new five core GPU, and custom display engine, combine with an amazing new display, and takes the iPhone experience even further.

Jaws: ( 01:04:04 ) This year, we’re proud to introduce an entirely new, Super Retina XDR display. With a new, more efficient Owlet panel, the display now supports up to a thousand nits peak outdoor brightness. That’s 25% higher than last year. And for the first time, we’re bringing ProMotion to iPhone. With our latest technology, this ProMotion display can refresh from as low as 10 Hertz, to as high as 120 Hertz. ProMotion is designed to respond dynamically, and match your content. The advanced custom architecture produces fast frame rates when you need them, and preserves battery life when you don’t.

Jaws: ( 01:04:41 ) We also optimized iOS to take full advantage of this. For example, when swiping between apps, or scrolling, the system adapts the frame rates to precisely match the speed of the user’s finger. The result is an incredibly responsive experience, that is fast and fluid. Of course, ProMotion is also great for apps, providing more responsive inputs, smoother graphics, and more precise gameplay. We brought in a few developers to see what they could do with it, and the results were amazing.

Joe Lee: ( 01:05:10 ) All right, let’s go. I work on a title called Mobile Feature Revolution.

Kyle Webster: ( 01:05:15 ) I am the Senior Design Evangelist for Adobe. I work on Adobe Fresco.

Tommy Krul: ( 01:05:21 ) And I am the founder, and CTO, of Super Evil Megacorp. Catalyst Black is really a rich and detailed world, and ProMotion’s adaptive frame rate is really unique. Because of the 120 frames per second, you can get perfect response time. It’s about the refresh rate. It’s about the controls. It’s almost like your fingers are glued to the screen.

Kyle Webster: ( 01:05:39 ) A device like this changes the game for artists everywhere. With ProMotion, it means that I’m actually seeing the pixels move in real time. There’s absolutely no lag.

Joe Lee: ( 01:05:50 ) Super Retina XDR display allows the gamers to see further into the distance, and catch more details in surroundings. So, we have all these great characters. They need to look better than real.

Tommy Krul: ( 01:06:02 ) The iPhone 13 Pro has one of the most powerful mobile GPUs ever created. And with that, we can really bring all these graphics features to a mobile device.

Joe Lee: ( 01:06:10 ) I like that part.

Tommy Krul: ( 01:06:11 ) The incredible combination of A15 Bionic, ProMotion, and 5G, makes the iPhone 13 Pro the most powerful smartphone in the world, or any world for that matter.

Joe Lee: ( 01:06:19 ) The A15 Bionic, ProMotion, 5G [foreign language 01:06:23].

Jaws: ( 01:06:27 ) The new Super Retina XDR display, with ProMotion, comes in two great sizes, 6.1 inch and 6.7 inch. And the custom design Owlet panels work across different lighting conditions, and content types, maintaining incredible color accuracy, and contrast.

Jaws: ( 01:06:42 ) Now, let’s talk about the all new iPhone 13 Pro Camera System. This is our biggest camera advancement ever. To tell you more about it, here’s Louis.

Louis Dudley: ( 01:07:04 ) iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max introduce an all new camera system, starting with the new 77 millimeter telephoto camera, with 3X optical zoom, a new ultra wide camera, with auto-focus, and a larger F 1.8 aperture, with a 92% improvement in low light. And a new wide camera that has a larger F 1.5 aperture, and 1.9 micron pixels, for our largest sensor ever, with up to 2. 2 times improvement in low light.

Louis Dudley: ( 01:07:32 ) So, you’ll get beautiful photos in any situation. The larger sensor of the wide offers more light gathering, for less noise and faster shutter speeds, and even longer brackets when shooting night mode photos with a tripod. The new 77 millimeter telephoto enables beautiful, classic, portraiture photos, and 3X optical zoom, for photos and videos, for a total 6X optical zoom range on iPhone 13 Pro.

Louis Dudley: ( 01:07:58 ) With the new ultra wide, low-light photos are brighter and sharper, with more details, like you see in her dress, or on the couch. The ultra wide camera also enables something entirely new on iPhone, Macro photography.

Louis Dudley: ( 01:08:11 ) Macro photography typically uses a special lens that can focus at close distances. The new ultra wide lens design and auto-focus system enable incredibly sharp focus, and can magnify subjects with a minimum distance of two centimeters. So, you can get detailed close-ups, like of this beautiful red daisy, the cells in this leaf, or the water droplets on this mushroom. And for the first time, all of the cameras, including the telephoto, have night mode, which is made possible by advanced computational photography. With high integration between hardware and software, our cameras can do even more. To tell you all about it, here’s Rebecca.

Rebecca Puols: ( 01:08:54 ) When tuning the iPhone Camera System, we shoot review thousands of photos. Analyzing all of those photos allows us to deliver features like smart HDR4, which automatically brings improved color, contrast, and lighting, for each subject in a group photo, including for challenging shots like this. Our software and ISP adjust for different lighting, and we’ve made improvements for skin tones, so everyone looks even better.

Rebecca Puols: ( 01:09:19 ) We’re also introducing a way to personalize your iPhone Camera with Photographic Styles. This is a feature that pro photographers are going to love. Photographic Styles bring your individual preferences right into our advanced image pipeline, applying local edits, like a photo editor would, but in real time, as we run through the photo. That means, we get all the benefits of our multi frame, image processing pipeline, with the ability to customize it, in a way you can never achieve with a simple filter.

Rebecca Puols: ( 01:09:49 ) Select from one of our four default styles before you shoot. For example, Rich Contrast for a bolder look, or Vibrant for a punchier look. Each uses our deep semantic understanding to intelligently apply the right amount of adjustments to different parts of the photo, while preserving skin tones. You can also customize the styles further, with Tone and Warmth, which combine multiple attributes for a look that’s all your own.

Rebecca Puols: ( 01:10:16 ) Styles works across scenes and subject types. You don’t need to set it every time, so you can define your style, and use it across your photos. And that’s Photographic Styles, coming into iPhone 13 Pro, and we’re excited to bring it to iPhone 13 as well. Now, back to Jaws.

Jaws: ( 01:10:35 ) The all new Pro Camera System, combined with the power of computational photography, will allow users to capture beautiful images better than ever before. The new iPhone 13 Pro Camera System also provides our most advanced video features. The all new camera system, along with Dolby Vision HDR recording, produces incredible pro level video. So, we asked two time Academy Award winning director, Kathryn Bigelow, and Oscar nominated cinematographer, Greg Frazier, to show us what they can do with the power of iPhone 13 Pro.

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:11:08 ) Look up.

Speaker 40: ( 01:11:09 ) Light please.

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:11:29 ) It’s a completely integrated process now. The iPhone doesn’t require any ancillary pieces of equipment. Like it become still, and she turns slowly. It’s the dawning realization. I thought it was a good challenge. You know, these are all genres I love, and it’s so great to kind of parachute in, do a deep dive with the iPhone. And with so much accessibility, I think all pretension tends to disappear. And so, it makes the set, and the filming process, much less apprehensive.

Greg Frazier: ( 01:12:12 ) There was no limitations to what I could do with this particular camera. Whereas normally, everybody gets so precious about a camera… And lens looks so expensive, or it’s so fragile. One of the things that the iPhone couldn’t do up until now, was to create an idea of depth from a lens. With Cinematic mode, what’s exciting is, we can actually choose focus later. To me, that’s really bringing it up to the professional film cameras.

Greg Frazier: ( 01:12:50 ) We can actually go ahead and make these stories, and make these films, using the tools on this iPhone. I believe that with the advent, and with the addition of Cinematic mode, we’re going to very soon see filmmakers make films in a different way, which is exciting.

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:13:08 ) It might even verse a brand new genre.

Greg Frazier: ( 01:13:11 ) I have no doubt it will, just given the size, and given the ability to move this camera.

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:13:15 ) Exactly.

Greg Frazier: ( 01:13:16 ) It will change the language of cinema…

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:13:18 ) … Of cinema…

Greg Frazier: ( 01:13:18 ) … In a very positive way.

Speaker 40: ( 01:13:46 ) Cutting.

Jaws: ( 01:13:50 ) Everything you just saw, including the behind the scenes’ footage, was shot on iPhone 13 Pro. With major updates across the wide, ultra wide, and telephoto cameras, it’s an incredible device for filmmaking. The new ultra wide camera enables amazing macro slow-mo videos, thanks to the new lens design. And the new 3X telephoto allows you to zoom even closer to the action, and offers a great new focal length for video.

Jaws: ( 01:14:16 ) This is really awesome when using our all new Cinematic mode, which uses machine learning and disparity, to create a depth map that’s built into the video. So, you can change the depth effect, including the level of BOCA, and where the focus is applied, even after the capture. This is another iPhone first, as iPhone 13, and iPhone 13 Pro, are the only smartphones that can do this.

Jaws: ( 01:14:40 ) We also have another Pro video feature coming later this year, and that’s ProRes video. ProRes offers exceptionally high color fidelity, and more efficient encoding, for use in pro video editing apps, like Final Cut Pro. That’s why it’s widely used by video editors as the final delivery format for commercials, feature films, and broadcast. A15 Bionic adds hardware acceleration for ProRes, and in combination with our advanced video encoders and decoders, as well as our faster file system, and flash storage pipeline, you can now record up to 4k at 30 frames per second in ProRes, right in the camera app. iPhone 13 Pro is the only smartphone to provide an end to end pro workflow, allowing you to record, and edit, in ProRes, or Dolby Vision. This will transform filmmaking with a device that can simply slip into your pocket.

Jaws: ( 01:15:33 ) Next, let’s talk about battery life. This is our most pro iPhone ever, with our fastest performance, most advanced display, and most powerful camera system ever in an iPhone. Thanks to the efficiency of the A15 Bionic, and iOS15, as well as a larger battery, iPhone 13 Pro delivers incredible, all day battery life. iPhone 13 Pro lasts more than one and a-half hours longer in your day, than iphone 12 Pro. And iPhone 13 Pro Max will last more than two and a-half hours longer than iPhone 12 Pro Max. That means iPhone 13 Pro Max has the longest battery life ever in an iPhone.

Jaws: ( 01:16:12 ) The entire iPhone 13 lineup has been carefully designed to minimize its impact on the environment. We redesigned the packaging to eliminate the outer plastic wrap, saving 600 metric tons of plastic. This brings us closer to our goal of completely removing plastic from all of our packaging. iPhone uses 100% recycled, rare earth elements and magnets, and 100% recycled tin in the solder of the main logic board.

Jaws: ( 01:16:38 ) So, that’s iPhone 13 Pro, with our most advanced technologies, an all new camera system with three new cameras, ProRes video, Cinematic mode, the new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, A15 Bionic with five core GPU, 5G, Mag safe, and incredible durability features. These I-phones push the boundaries for what’s possible in a smartphone.

Jaws: ( 01:17:02 ) Even with all this incredible technology, iPhone 13 Pro still starts at $999, and iphone 13 Pro Max still starts at $1099. We also have amazing offers from apple, and our partners, including up to $1000 off a new s, when you trade in a qualifying iPhone.

Jaws: ( 01:17:20 ) And this year, we’re introducing a new 1 terabyte storage option. This is a great addition for our pro iPhone users. The 1 terabyte joins our 128, 256, and 512 gigabytes storage options. You can pre-order all four new models of iPhone 13 family this Friday, September 17th. And they will all be available on September 24th. So, here’s our new iPhone lineup, including iPhone 12, iPhone 11, and iPhone se, starting at just $399. Now, back to Tim.

Tim Cook: ( 01:18:02 ) Thank you, Jaws. And thank you to all of today’s presenters. What a spectacular set of announcements. Our most popular iPad is now powered by the A13 Bionic, with a new 12 megapixel ultra wide front camera with Center Stage. This is a big upgrade. iPad mini gets a completely new, all screen design, with a brilliant liquid retina display, blazing fast performance with the new A15 Bionic chip, new cameras with Center Stage, and all new colors. This is the mightiest iPad mini yet.

Tim Cook: ( 01:18:40 ) The new Apple Watch Series 7 has our largest and most advanced display, optimize UI, new watch faces, and it’s our most durable ever. It’s the best smart watch in the world. An update to Apple Fitness Plus, adding Pilates and Guided Meditation, a new workout to get you ready for snow season, as well as group workouts to help keep you motivated.

Tim Cook: ( 01:19:05 ) And iPhone 13, with fantastic new technologies, including our most advanced dual camera system, with Cinematic mode, A15 Bionic, 5G, brighter Super Retina XDR display, and longer, all day battery life.

Tim Cook: ( 01:19:22 ) iPhone 13 Pro, with our most state-of-the-art technologies, for those who want the most out of their iPhone. With our biggest camera system advancement yet, including Cinematic mode and ProRes video, the Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, A15 bionic with five core GPU, 5G, and industry leading durability.

Tim Cook: ( 01:19:46 ) These are the best iPhones we’ve ever created. Here at apple, the customer is at the center of everything we do. And we continue to innovate, designing the very best products and services to enrich people’s lives, and to empower them to do great things every day. Thank you for joining us. Stay safe, and take care.

Speaker 41: ( 01:20:17 ) That sound you hear that lingers in your ear, but you can’t forget from sundown to sunset.

Speaker 41: ( 01:20:20 ) It’s on in the air. You hear it everywhere, no matter what you do, it’s going to grab a hold on… grab up on your soul.

Speaker 41: ( 01:20:20 ) Might as well get with it, like a sound you hear that lingers in your ear, and oh.

Speaker 41: ( 01:20:20 ) It’s in the air. It’s everywhere, oh baby.

RECAP: Apple unveils the iPhone 13, a new iPad, and a new Apple Watch

  • Apple just unveiled new versions of many of its biggest products, including the iPhone 13.
  • New versions of the iPad, iPad Mini, and Apple Watch also debuted.
  • With the exception of the Watch Series 7, all the new products will ship this month.

Rather than beginning with the iPhone, Apple CEO Tim Cook started the presentation with the debut of the latest iPad: The new iPad starts at $329 and is expected to ship to customers starting next week.

The first new product Apple debuted on Tuesday was an update to its long-running tablet, the iPad.

The latest version of the iPad comes with a more powerful chip, the "A13 Bionic," boasting 20% stronger performance, and an upgraded 12 megapixel ultrawide camera. It's also getting a storage boost, with the base model coming with 64 GB.

Apple's latest iPad starts at $329, comes in two colors ("space gray" and silver), and it's expected to start shipping to customers next week. It's available for pre-order on Tuesday, Apple said.

Apple also updated its smaller iPad, the iPad Mini. The fifth generation iPad Mini starts at $499, comes with 5G connectivity, and has a more powerful chip and camera.

It's not just the traditional iPad getting an update: Apple rolled right from the big iPad update to an update for the iPad Mini.

In the 2.5 years since Apple last updated the iPad Mini, Apple focused on improving the chip at the heart of the tablet, adding 5G connectivity, and producing the device in more colors (space grey, pink, purple, and starlight).

In a nod to its bigger brother, the iPad Mini now has a USB-C port which is used both for charging and for connecting to various accessories, and it matches the overall design of the standard iPad.

The product updates kept coming: The latest version of Apple's Watch is known as Apple Watch Series 7 and it's the biggest version of the watch Apple's ever made.

The latest version of the Apple Watch is the Series 7, and it starts at $399.

The new Series 7 has a larger and tougher display than ever before, Apple said. It comes in five new colors, and employs Apple's "Retina" display technology.

It's otherwise not a massive update over previous models, but the benefit of the new Apple Watch models dropping is that older models are likely to drop in price. Apple didn't put a specific launch date on the new Apple Watch models, and only committed to a "fall" launch window.

After nearly 40 minutes of presentation, Apple finally gave in and debuted the product update everyone was waiting for: The iPhone 13!

Apple's new smartphone is the iPhone 13, embracing the notoriously unlucky number for the latest version of its wildly popular device.

Like the other new Apple products announced on Tuesday, the iPhone 13 comes in an array of colors (pink, blue, "midnight starlight," and Product RED). It's got a new chip at its heart (the A15 Bionic) that makes it Apple's most powerful iPhone yet, and the base storage has been increased to 128 GB (a new 512 GB model is also being added at the high end).

Despite a tease from Apple-produced "Ted Lasso," the latest iPhone isn't ditching the notch at the top of the screen. It looks nearly identical to last year's iPhone in design.

There isn't just one new iPhone model: the iPhone 13 also comes in a smaller form factor, with the iPhone 13 Mini. The smaller form factor matches the larger iPhone in power, but in a smaller size.

The new iPhone 13 starts at $699, Apple said, and pre-orders open on Friday, September 17. The first units will arrive with customers on September 24, Apple said.

Apple wasn't done with the iPhone 13: The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, its highest-end models of the iPhone, were also unveiled.

As the name suggests, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are the more powerful, higher tech versions of the standard iPhone 13.

The big updates to the Pro models over the standard models are a Super Retina XDR display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and more powerful cameras, and it comes in two large sizes at 6.1 (Pro) and 6.7 inches (Pro Max).

Like last year, the Pro starts at $999 and the Pro Max starts at $1099. All models of iPhone 13 are available for pre-order starting this Friday, September 17, and will begin arriving with buyers on September 24.

Apple September event: iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro

iPhone 16 prototypes

Today's event's headliner is the iPhone. This year, we're anticipating the launch of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro , with four total devices in the iPhone 16 family: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro.

Likely starting at $799 (although higher component prices may affect that ), the iPhone 16 is expected to come in 6.1-inch standard and 6.7-inch Plus versions. Reports say it'll feature a redesigned camera block , the Action button borrowed from iPhone 15 Pro , and up to 7 color options . If Apple sticks to its current way of doing things, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus would inherit the A17 Pro chip we see in the iPhone 15 Pro models, though at least one rumor says it'll get a 3-nanometer A18 chip .

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro may get a more powerful version of the A18 Pro chip as well as larger display sizes. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claims the iPhone 16 Pro models will grow by “ a couple tenths of an inch diagonally ,” making them the biggest iPhones to date. The bezels may shrink on Pro phones , too.

All phones will ship with iOS 18 , though it's to be determined whether/which Apple Intelligence features teased at WWDC 2024 will be available to all iPhone 16 models. (The current iOS 18.1 developer beta has many writing and image editing features along with basic Safari improvements; that 18.1 update will likely follow a month or so after iOS 18's initial release.)

And while both regular and Pro iPhones could get an improved telephoto lens and the same 48MP main resolution, the sensor on the Pro models may be larger to improve photo quality . Alternatively, a second 48MP sensor could be added to the Pro model ultrawide cameras to support 48MP ProRes shots at the iPhone's widest 0.5x magnification level.

A recent leak claims the Pro-model handsets will get several new camera features , including the ability to shoot 4K video at 120 frames per second, the option to pause and resume video recordings in the camera app, the removal of wind noise from videos, new Photographic Styles with enhanced machine learning to preserve skin tones,  Vision Pro  compatible 3D Spatial Photos and support for the JPEG-XL format.

Additional iPhone 16 rumors include larger battery capacities for the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max (all but the iPhone 16 Plus) as well as the addition of a Capture Button on all models to make taking photos/video more convenient.

If Apple holds to its usual schedule of selling phones around 10 days after the event that introduces them, the iPhone 16 models would go on sale September 20. That's the date Bloomberg is reporting, though a German blog claims Apple will move up the release date by a day. We'll side with Bloomberg for now, especially with an Apple Store in Sweden set to open up on September 20 . You wouldn't imagine a store would wait until after the iPhone 16 release to open its doors.

Apple September event: Apple Watch 10

Apple Watch 9

The other product we're fairly confident we'll see today is the Apple Watch Series 10, which may also be referred to as the Apple Watch 10 or Apple Watch X. For the 10th-gen iPhone, Apple used roman numeral 'X' branding, so we're eager to see whether it does the same for Apple Watch.

Information about the next-generation Apple Watch has been limited, so we're not sure what improvements we'll see over the Apple Watch Series 9  just yet. That said, we're convinced by rumors that the Apple Watch 10 will feature the watch's biggest redesign in years . A report says the watch will be thinner and come in larger sizes, though no insight yet whether this will impact the Apple Watch band system.

Otherwise, the Apple Watch 10 will adopt the best core features of the Apple Watch: comprehensive workout tracking, support for hundreds of apps, convenient on-wrist communication, safety tools and more. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s next-generation wearables may monitor and alert for signs of sleep apnea and hypertension . But ongoing legal battles with health-tech company Masimo has put those features in doubt.

In good news, a report from The Elec claims a battery life boost could finally happen for Apple Watch 10 . Apple is apparently looking to include low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology on the device's display, improving the display's power efficiency.

Multiple reports suggest an Apple Watch Ultra 3 is also coming this year , as a follow-up to the Apple Watch Ultra 2 . That said, we don't know yet what upgrades it'll offer. Additionally, if Apple sticks to a two-year cadence for coming out with a new entry-level watch, the Apple Watch SE 3 could be on the agenda as well.

Apple September event: AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3

The Apple AirPods 3 wireless earbuds and charging case

Accessories are usually part of the fall product event, and Glowtime figures to be no exception. We're expecting to see at least one new Apple audio product in the form of the Apple AirPods 4 , and it's possible they could be joined by a new version of the AirPods Pro (though conventional wisdom has that product coming out next year ).

The AirPods 4 are expected to be Apple's new entry-level wireless earbuds, as Apple drops the AirPods 3 and AirPods 2 from its lineup. This new version should have an improved fit with a USB-C charging case. It's also thought that Apple could offer two versions of its basic AirPods, with the more expensive model featuring active noise cancellation.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports the higher-end model will inherit two features from the AirPods Pro 2 : active noise cancellation and a higher-end case with a speaker built in . As with the Pro model, this will make it easier to locate via the Apple Find My network (and presumably alert you to when it’s charging with the same friendly ‘ding’).

A new report tips the updated Pro models to join the AirPods 4 at Glowtime, but we think a staggered release is more likely.

Apple September event: AirPods Max 2

Listing image for best AirPods Max alternatives

Speaking of audio products, Apple's AirPods Max turned three-years-old in December 2023. Although we didn't see them at WWDC 2024 held on June 10, there's plenty of speculation that a so-called AirPods Max 2 could arrive later today when the Apple execs take to the stage.

We haven’t heard many specific rumors on updates to Apple's premium over-ear headphones, though it's possible they'll just be refreshed rather than completely overhauled. There are rumors the AirPods Max will come in at least one new color and switch to USB-C charging, as the AirPods Pro 2 did last year.

The AirPods Max are extremely popular, but there are convincing AirPods Max alternatives among the best headphones , such as the Sony WH-1000XM5 and new Sonos Ace .

Apple September event: iPad mini 7

iPad mini 6

The final piece of hardware that may make an appearance at today's Glowtime is the iPad mini 7 . The iPad mini 6 was announced at the September event in 2021, after all.

We haven't heard many rumors about the next iPad mini, but it's gone the longest without an update among the entire iPad lineup. The iPad Air 2024 and iPad Pro 2024 launched just a few months ago, so the iPad mini may be next.

It's possible that Apple also holds a second fall event to deal with Mac releases. If that happens, the iPad mini 7 could be part of that event instead.

Apple’s iPhone 16 Event Recap: New iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods

Caitlin McGarry

By Caitlin McGarry , Roderick Scott , Lauren Dragan and Signe Brewster

Apple’s fall event brought new iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods, including iPhone 16 models with updated cameras and a new side button that lets you snap photos and videos with one hand.

Wirecutter was on the ground at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, to cover all the news.

In addition to Apple Watches with larger, thinner displays, we’re also looking forward to testing an upcoming software update that will bring hearing aid features to the AirPods Pro 2. We’ll also look into the newest features available on iOS 18, which will be available as a software update on September 16.

Here’s everything that Apple announced at its September 9 event:

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus

Promo image of six Apple iPhone 16 models in various colors, shown side by side.

Apple announced the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus , which come with redesigned cameras, a new Camera Control button, and the Action button previously found only on Pro models. The company claims that the phones are designed for a suite of new artificial intelligence features, though many won’t be available until later this fall or next year.

The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display, and the 16 Plus offers a 6.7-inch display, both of which are capable of up to 2,000 nits of maximum brightness. They also have a Ceramic Shield display, which Apple cites as being 50% tougher than its predecessors (though we might still recommend a screen protector). The 16 and 16 Plus are powered by Apple’s latest A18 chip, which is more power-efficient, can support high-end gaming, and claims to offer up to 30% faster performance than last year’s processor.

Both new iPhones have a Camera Control button that can quickly launch the camera to snap a photo or shoot a video. A light press brings up zoom controls–swipe from left to right to zoom in or out. Later this year, clicking and holding the button will enable a Visual Intelligence feature, which will look very familiar to Android users. The Google Lens–like visual search allows you to find real-time information about whatever your camera is pointed at. You can look up places and things you walk by, for example, or convert a physical flyer into an event on your phone.

Aside from the new Camera Capture button, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus also gain the iPhone 15 Pro’s customizable Action button. You can customize it to open features such as the flashlight or Voice Memos, or use it in an app to launch a relevant tool.

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus have a new vertically stacked rear-camera system with a 48-megapixel Fusion camera incorporating a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, plus a 12-megapixel ultrawide. The two cameras offer a total of four focal lengths, are capable of close-up macro photos, and support spatial capture to view on the Apple Vision Pro.

But Apple spent the lion’s share of its iPhone 16 and 16 Plus announcement focusing on some of the AI features coming to the iPhone, including automated AI-generated email summaries, automated photo library sorting, and more conversational search functionality with Siri. AI-generated emoji and writing-suggestion tools are also coming soon. Apple is promising industry-leading privacy protections for these features using a combination of on-device AI processing and Apple Silicon–based servers. But you’ll have to wait to try things out, as many of Apple’s high-profile AI features are expected to roll out in iOS 18.1 later this fall, while others will roll out early next year.

The iPhone 16 starts at $800, and the iPhone 16 Plus starts at $900. They will be available for preorder on September 13 and will hit stores on September 20.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max

Apple’s new iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max phones lean heavily toward high-end content creation with features that go above and beyond the needs of most people looking to buy a phone in 2024.

Both iPhone 16 Pro models have smaller bezels and increased screen sizes, with the 16 Pro’s screen size going from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches and the 16 Pro Max going from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. The 16 Pro models come in new titanium colors and bring over the Camera Control button from the standard iPhone 16 models. Both 16 Pro models run on Apple’s latest A18 Pro chip, which is more power-efficient and can handle more high-end gaming, including the addition of raytracing support and better performance for “console-quality” experiences in games like Assassin’s Creed.

A promo image of the iPhone 16 Pro with three photos of the iPhone in different media editing apps. One is a photo that is being edited, one is a video, and the third is an audio recording.

Both Pro models have an updated rear-camera setup that includes a 48-megapixel Fusion camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide, and a 12-megapixel telephoto with 5x optical zoom (a first for the smaller Pro model, which has typically been limited to a 3x optical zoom). In addition, the 16 Pro and Pro Max cameras can capture full 48-megapixel-resolution photos and can capture video in 4K at 120 fps for more high-quality slow motion.

Apple is offering more powerful mics inside the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. They were demonstrated via a pair of new features, including an updated, upcoming Voice Notes app, which adds the ability to create layered recordings (which Apple demoed by showing someone singing over prerecorded audio of a song idea played on a guitar). Apple also demonstrated powerful new audio-recording features within the camera app, which allows for different kinds of processing and clearer voice audio in recordings to better reflect various environments and production needs.

The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $1,000, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,200. Preorders begin September 13, and the phones will go on sale in-store on September 20.

Apple Intelligence availability

iOS 18, which will give you full iPhone home-screen customization control and the ability to send scheduled texts in Messages, rolls out as a free software upgrade on Monday, September 16.

Apple’s AI features, which are limited to the iPhone 16 lineup and iPhone 15 Pro models, will roll out in a later iOS 18.1 software update in October. Apple Intelligence will also be available on iPads and Macs with the iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia upgrades.

Among the Apple Intelligence features coming soon is one that will let you use generative AI to rewrite, edit, or summarize text. You’ll also be able to search for specific photos and edit objects out of them. And AI will be able to summarize notifications and decide which ones are most important for you to see.

Apple Watch Series 10

Promo image of the new Apple Watch Series 10, showing seven watches of various colors side by side.

Ten years after the first Apple Watch was announced, Apple took the wraps off the new Apple Watch Series 10 , which the company says has the “biggest wearable display” it has ever put in a watch—even bigger than last year’s Apple Watch Ultra 2—and is also the thinnest Apple Watch ever.

The screen has more-rounded corners in comparison with previous Apple Watches. The display is also up to 40% brighter when viewed at an angle, so you don’t have to lift your wrist to see information at a glance. It should also feel more, well, like a watch, with seconds visible when your wrist is down.

A promo photo of the Apple Watch Series 10 next to the Series 6, demonstrating how much bigger the 10 screen is.

The Series 10 is 9.7 millimeters thick—10% thinner than the Series 9. It has smaller speakers to fit in that sleeker case size, though Apple says the audio quality remains the same. You’ll also be able to listen to audio such as podcasts or music directly from the speakers instead of using Bluetooth earbuds. (The jury is still out on whether that will be a good thing.)

The Series 10 also gains a new health feature: sleep apnea detection. The Apple Watch will use its accelerometer to detect breathing disturbances if you wear it while sleeping. Every 30 days you’ll receive a report with an alert if the watch has detected sleep disruptions, which you can then show to a physician. Sleep apnea notifications will also be available on the Series 9 and Ultra 2, so you don’t need to upgrade to a new watch for the health feature.

The Series 10 is powered by Apple’s new S10 chip and will ship with watchOS 11, which has intelligent features such as a machine-learning-powered translation app.

The Series 10 comes in a new polished-aluminum black color, rose gold, and the classic silver aluminum. And it now comes in a titanium finish instead of stainless steel, which makes it weigh 20% less than the stainless steel Series 9. It comes in gold, silver, and space grey.

The watch goes on sale September 20 starting at $400 and is available to preorder today.

Apple also announced that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is sticking around and will now come in a black titanium finish in addition to silver. The new finish is available to preorder today for $800 and will be in stores on September 20.

Promo image of the new Apple AirPods 4.

Apple’s basic AirPods are getting a redesign with shorter stems, a more ergonomic design, and an H2 chip. Apple said the new AirPods 4 will have more bass and high-frequency clarity and will support spatial audio. Built-in accelerometers will let you answer or reject calls with a head shake. Apple says the new AirPods will use machine learning to reduce background noise and improve phone call clarity. The $130 AirPods 4 will come in a smaller case that charges via USB-C.

A $180 version of the AirPods will add active noise cancellation and transparency mode with adaptive audio to the basic unsealed AirPods design. The charging case can itself charge via wireless charging or USB-C, and it adds a speaker for Find My functionality.

Both versions of the AirPods 4 are available for preorder now and will be available in stores on September 20.

AirPods Max

A new AirPods Max pair is coming, too. Apple’s $550 over-ear headphones will now come in a host of new colors: black, blue, purple, and orange. The headphones have a button that lets you switch between the Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes, depending on whether you’d like to hear ambient noise. Disappointingly, Apple didn’t add a power-off button, a new case, or a more padded headband.

The new headphones finally come equipped with USB-C charging.

They will be available September 20 and can be preordered now.

AirPods Pro 2 hearing-health features

An iPhone next to a pair of AirPods Pro 2 in their charging case. The iPhone's screen is displaying the hearing aid menu that will now be available for these headphones.

Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 will get a software update this fall that adds hearing-health features . The update will bring a “clinically validated” hearing test and OTC “clinical grade” hearing aid functionality. The software update also includes a Hearing Protection mode, which Apple says can reduce exposure to damaging environmental noise.

The hearing test, which you can perform on an iPhone at home in about five minutes, looks for hearing loss. If the test results show that someone has mild or moderate hearing loss, the AirPods can instantly be set up as hearing aids that customize music, voices, and other sounds to be easier to hear.

Though the AirPods’ battery life doesn’t last long enough for the wearer to use these hearing-assistance features all day, this may be a good entry point for people at the earliest stages of hearing loss who need only occasional amplification. The hearing aid features will be in AirPods Pro 2 and iOS 18 this fall, and we plan to test them with our hearing aid panel as soon as the update is released.

Get ready to buy some new cables. Apple is about to announce the iPhone 15 and, with it, a change from Lightning to USB-C. It’s one of the biggest changes to the iPhone in years — and one that’s likely to infuriate as many people in need of new cables as it does excite those who are happy to consolidate around just one.

Alongside the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro, Apple is also expected to introduce new Apple Watches. The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are expected to be modest updates focused on internal improvements. We’re also expecting a new line of accessories using a more sustainable material and possibly some other gear — like an updated AirPods Pro case — that shifts over to USB-C as well.

The event starts at 1PM ET / 10AM PT, and you’ll be able to follow along with the latest here. We’ve got an embed of Apple’s YouTube stream, and our own team is on the ground reporting live with photos and videos. Apple’s in-person presentation usually runs slightly ahead of the streamed one, so you can follow along below to get the details as they’re happening.

Apple's 2024 Event Plans: New Products Coming in 2024

Each year, Apple typically holds three or four events to unveil new products. There's generally a spring event around March or April, the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, a September event focused on the iPhone and Apple Watch, and sometimes, an October event that usually includes Macs and iPads.

What to Expect from Apple in 2024 Feature 2

September iPhone Event

Apple's September event will include new flagship iPhone models and new Apple Watch models, plus it sometimes also includes updated AirPods. We've outlined some of what we're expecting below.

The standard iPhone 16 models will get the Action button added to the iPhone 15 Pro, alongside a new Capture button that's designed to make it easy to capture videos when the iPhone is held in a horizontal orientation. We're also expecting an upgraded A-series chip that's branded as an A18 chip, plus a rear camera lens setup arranged in a vertical orientation rather than a diagonal orientation.

Aside from the new Capture and Action buttons and the camera tweak, the iPhone 16 models are expected to look identical to the iPhone 15 models. Full details on the iPhone 16 feature set can be found in our iPhone 16 roundup .

iPhone 16 Pro

As with the iPhone 16 models, the iPhone 16 Pro models will look like the prior-generation iPhone 15 Pro models, but we are going to get bigger screen sizes. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a 6.3-inch display, up from 6.1 inches, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to have a 6.9-inch display, up from 6.7 inches.

The Pro models will feature the Capture button, a faster A-series chip, and an upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, plus the tetraprism 5x Telephoto lens introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be in both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the smaller iPhone 16 Pro this time around.

More on what to expect from the iPhone 16 Pro can be found in our iPhone 16 Pro roundup .

Apple Watch X

In 2024, we're expecting the Apple Watch Series 10 or Apple Watch X, which will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the device if you're counting from when it was introduced in 2014 rather than when it launched in 2015.

Rumors suggest that the Apple Watch this year could get a major redesign that will make it thinner, and there is a possibility that it will feature a new magnetic band system for attaching bands. If Apple does swap over to this, there is a chance that existing bands won't be compatible with the new models.

We're also counting on new health features that include blood pressure monitoring for hypertension detection and the ability for the Apple Watch to tell whether someone has sleep apnea using sleep data and breathing information.

Apple is working on a fourth-generation version of the AirPods, which are expected to come out sometime around September 2024. There will be two models, one with the Active Noise Cancellation technology that has been limited to the AirPods Pro.

The AirPods 4 will come in at two different price points, and both models will feature a new design with shorter stems, and a case with USB-C charging and speakers for Find My alerts. Apple is also expected to add hearing aid functionality that will let the AirPods serve as an alternative to a traditional hearing aid.

AirPods Max

Apple will finally refresh the AirPods Max in 2024, but don't expect new features. Apple plans to keep the design and the internals the same, swapping only the Lightning port for a USB-C port. New colors are a possibility, though.

Late 2024/Early 2025 M4 Macs

According to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to begin refreshing the Mac lineup with M4 chips later in 2024. Several Macs are slated to be refreshed in the late 2024 or early 2025 timeframe, but Apple's exact release plans aren't yet clear.

The 24-inch iMac will be updated with the next-generation M4 chip in late 2024. The M4 is expected to feature improved performance to support AI tasks, and rumors suggest that Apple will add an updated Neural Engine with more cores.

MacBook Pro

Apple will refresh the MacBook Pro lineup with the M4-series chips in late 2024. The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro will get the M4 chip in late 2024, while the 14-inch and 16-inch models will be refreshed with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.

The Mac mini will be updated in late 2024. Right now, Apple sells a standard M2 version and an M2 Pro version, and we are expecting that to continue with the M4 lineup. The Mac mini will have M4 and M4 Pro chip options.

2025 M4 Mac Refresh

Several other Macs will be updated with M4-series chips across 2025.

MacBook Air

Apple plans to refresh the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models sometime in spring 2025, updating them with M4 chips. Design changes are not expected, with the focus to be on the chip refresh. Spring 2025 ranges from March 20 to June 20.

The Mac Studio was updated with M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips in June 2023, and it sounds like Apple will skip M3 chips in the desktop machine. Current rumors suggest the Mac Studio will be updated in mid-2025, and mid-year updates usually happen around WWDC. The Mac Studio will likely get M4 Max and M4 Ultra chips, keeping in line with the current options.

Apple plans to update the Mac Pro sometime in late 2025. It will be equipped with the highest-end version of the M4 chip, which is codenamed "Hidra," and it could be either an "Ultra" or "Extreme" M4 chip. The Mac Pro is also expected to support up to 512GB Unified Memory.

Products With Unknown Release Dates

There are a number of new products in the works that don't yet have specific release dates associated with them. Some of these could come at an October event, or at other times throughout the year.

  • Apple TV 4K - A new Apple TV 4K with a faster A16 processor was originally said to be coming in the first half of 2024, but more recent rumors have indicated a launch is not imminent.
  • iPad mini 7 - The next iPad mini won't have any design updates, but it could have an upgraded A-series chip and new front and rear cameras.
  • Low-cost iPad - Apple is working on an 11th-generation iPad with a faster chip and support for Wi-Fi 6E.
  • HomePod with Display - Apple is rumored to be working on a next-generation version of the HomePod that has a touchscreen display at the top. This would look similar to the existing HomePod, but the screen would be able to be interacted with in new ways.
  • New Display - There have been multiple rumors of a Pro Display XDR successor, but there's no word on when an update might come.
  • Home Hub Device - Rumors suggest Apple is working on a smart home display that would serve as a central hub for controlling smart home products, and it could launch as soon as 2024.

Further in the Future

  • iMac Pro - Apple could introduce a larger 32-inch iMac, replacing the previously discontinued 27-inch iMac. Apple's plans and a potential launch date continue to be unclear.
  • Foldable iPhone - Apple is allegedly working on a foldable iPhone that might be between 7.5 and 8 inches, with a launch date slated for 2025 at the earliest.
  • Foldable iPad/Mac - Before we ever get a foldable iPhone, Apple will introduce some kind of foldable notebook and perhaps a foldable iPad. Current rumors suggest that Apple is working on a 20-inch MacBook that has a foldable display, but it won't come out for several years yet.
  • Vision Pro 2 - Apple is working on a new Vision Pro, or multiple new models. Rumors are a little mixed right now, but Apple seems to want a successor for the current model and also a lower-cost version that would be closer in price to the iPhone.

Events That Already Happened

February vision pro launch.

Apple in February launched the Vision Pro, its first new product of 2024. There was no launch event because it had already been introduced at WWDC last June, but Apple did market it through product videos and a press release. The Vision Pro is priced starting at $3,500, and as of right now, it is limited to the United States.

visionOS, the operating system that runs on the Vision Pro, also came out in February.

As an entirely new product, the Vision Pro has some cutting-edge technology and you can find all the details on the device in our Vision Pro roundup .

Surprise March MacBook Air Launch

In late 2023, there were rumors that Apple would hold a 2024 spring event to unveil new MacBook Air and iPad Pro models, but in late February, we got word that Apple had no plans for an event after all.

On March 4, Apple announced the new 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch MacBook Air models . There are few physical changes compared to the prior-generation MacBook Air models from 2022 and 2023, but both machines adopt the 3-nanometer M3 chip. The M3 is approximately 20 percent faster than the prior-generation M2 chip, and it has improved graphics capabilities such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

Other new additions include Wi-Fi 6E, a fingerprint-resistant coating for the Midnight color, and microphone improvements, with details available in our MacBook Air roundup .

May iPad Pro and iPad Air Event

In late April, Apple announced an event to be held on Tuesday, May 7, with rumors pointing to new iPad Pro and iPad Air models plus some updated accessories.

The event saw the introduction of redesigned ultra-thin iPad Pro models in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, both featuring new "Ultra Retina XDR" OLED display panels that offer enhanced contrast for improved HDR, better colors, and greater power efficiency. The iPad Pro models also include the all-new M4 chip, double the starting storage at 256GB, and a relocated landscape front camera and Face ID module.

Alongside the iPad Pro, Apple also introduced an updated Magic Keyboard with an aluminum shell, function keys and a larger haptic trackpad, plus a new Apple Pencil Pro with squeeze and barrel roll gestures, haptic feedback and Find My support.

The iPad Air also saw a significant update at the event, with the lineup expanding to two sizes for the first time with 11-inch and 13-inch models now available. Both models feature Apple's M2 chip and a relocated landscape FaceTime camera.

Finally, Apple discontinued the ninth-generation iPad and reduced the price of the 10th-generation iPad by $100, with Apple's cheapest iPad now starting at $349.

June 2024 - WWDC

Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday, June 10, introducing new versions of the software that runs on Apple devices. WWDC focused heavily on "Apple Intelligence," which is what Apple is calling its set of AI features. AI updates are coming to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, plus there are new features for each operating system.

Apple Intelligence includes tools for helping you generate, edit, and proofread writing, major Siri updates to make Siri more useful, and image generation features for creating custom images and custom emoji, or Genmoji.

  • iOS 18 - iOS 18 has all of the Apple Intelligence features, along with a revamped Home Screen that lets you move app icons anywhere, recolor icons, and remove the names from your icons. Control Center has been redesigned and is customizable, plus third-party developers can create Control Center controls. There are emoji Tapbacks in Messages, an option to send messages via satellite, a feature for locking apps, and much more.
  • iPadOS 18 - iPadOS 18 has the same AI features as iOS 18 along with the Control Center and Home Screen updates, plus all of the app features. The iPad now has a Calculator app and in Notes, support for writing out math equations and having them solved right in line. There's also a Smart Script feature that improves your handwriting with Apple Pencil, and Safari can summarize webpages and highlight key info, a feature that's also available cross-platform.
  • macOS Sequoia - You can mirror your iPhone to your Mac with macOS Sequoia, fully controlling apps, interacting with notifications, and more. And you can do it while your iPhone is locked. There's a new Passwords app that's also on PCs and in iOS 18/iPadOS 18, plus updates to window tiling.
  • tvOS 18 - tvOS 18 adds new animated screensavers and makes it easier to switch screensavers, and in the Apple TV app, when you watch Apple TV+ shows, you can see InSights, which give you info on the actors in a TV or movie.
  • watchOS 11 - watchOS 11 includes a Vitals app that aggregates your health data and gives you a wellness score each day, so you can get alerted to any changes you're experiencing. There are new Training Load features for tracking the intensity of workouts and the impact on the body over time, and Smart Stack widgets have been improved with new widgets and support for Live Activities. You can also pause Activity Ring tracking without losing a streak.
  • visionOS 2 - Apple improved the look of Personas in visionOS 2, and there are new gestures for accessing the Control Center and Home View. Home View apps can be customized, and there's an option to create 3D photos from your 2D images.

All of the software updates are available to developers in a beta capacity right now, with Apple planning for a public release in the fall after several months of beta testing. Not all features are slated to launch right in September, and some of the Apple Intelligence additions won't be available until later iOS 18 updates in 2025.

Apple Watch's new sleep apnea detection feature offers over-the-counter screening

Denise Dador Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The American Medical Association estimates that 30 to 40 million Americans have sleep apnea, but most aren't diagnosed. Now, a new update is coming to the health app on Apple Watches that could you the information you need to get help.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that temporarily causes you to stop breathing, disrupting oxygen flow to your brain and body.

Just because a person snores doesn't mean they have obstructive sleep apnea, but it is a sign.

This chronic condition can lead to many health consequences.

"Cardiovascular health, diabetes, hypertension," explained pulmonary care and sleep medicine expert Dr. Raj Dasgupta with Huntington Health Hospital.

Sleep apnea can also raise one's risk for dementia and mood disorders.

Medical sleep apnea tests need a doctor's prescription, can be expensive, and require an overnight sleep center stay or hooking up diagnostic equipment at home. Now, the Food and Drug Administration has approved Apple's sleep apnea detection feature for use on Apple Watches.

"I don't want to oversimplify it, but it's an over-the-counter way to assess your risk for sleep apnea," said Dasgupta.

He adds that it's not a diagnostic device, but it screens for breathing disturbances without using oxygen monitors.

The watch has a built-in accelerometer that detects motion. Detection so sensitive that when combined with an algorithm, it can determine your airflow pattern and when it's disrupted.

"No oxygen in, no carbon dioxide out, and to have an apnea, it's usually going to be 10 seconds long," said Dasgupta.

For FDA clearance, Apple tested the feature on about 1,400 people then compared it against the gold standard medical sleep test.

Apple says the watch correctly alerted people who had apnea 66% of the time.

"This is going to be one other piece of the puzzle that you need to bring to your healthcare provider to make sure you get the big, correct picture," said Dasgupta.

Other devices like the Oura ring and Fitbit can help identify signs of apnea. The Samsung Galaxy watch has a similar FDA clearance.

Apple's new sleep apnea detection feature will be available in the Apple Watch Series 9, 10, and Ultra 2. But you don't have to buy one to get checked for sleep apnea.

Dasgupta said chronic snoring and feeling tired all the time warrant a discussion with your doctor.

The latest iPhone 16, Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods 4 are available right now

The latest iPhone 16, Apple Watch and AirPods all have major design changes and upgrader internals.

If you pop into an Apple store this Friday or look on its website, you will notice the launch of a few new products, including the iPhone 16, Apple Watch Series 10 and the AirPods 4. We covered the announcement of the new products earlier this month, but now everything is readily available in-store and online. If you need an iPhone upgrade or prefer the better cameras of the Pro model, this is the best time to scoop up Apple’s latest tech.

iPhone 16

iPhone 16 Pro

iPhone 16 Pro

The iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models have a new design, with a slightly larger and brighter display and an all-new customizable action button, which you can find on the side of the phone similar to the size of volume rockers. The new phone also has tougher glass so you are at less risk of cracking your screen, a titanium build that makes it lighter and more durable and has a bigger and better battery life than the previous iPhone iteration.

The new iPhone models will all have Apple Intelligence thanks to the A18 Bionic chip, which essentially gives your iPhone AI capabilities. According to Apple, the Apple Intelligence or “AI” update is not ready today but should be available soon. Some of the Apple Intelligence features give you various benefits that make generating photos, writing and communication via text better. Some of its key AI features include proofreading, changing the tone of an email or creating custom generative emojis.

The camera system has also been overhauled with an upgraded 48-megapixel main camera, a 5x telephoto lens for advanced zoom capability and a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera. The iPhone 16 starts at $799, and the iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999. All new models are available right now.

Apple Watch Series 10

Apple Watch Ultra 2

Apple Watch Ultra 2

The Apple Watch Series 10 updates one of our favorite smartwatches (the Series 9 ). The latest model has a thinner design, making it more comfortable to wear for longer periods. The watch will also update once per second when you turn on Always On mode instead of once per minute like in previous models.

The Series 10 now comes with a 42MM and 46MM OLED screen, which is thinner and brighter when viewed at an angle. Apple’s health-focused design has continued this year with all-new sleep apnea detection, which uses the watch to look out for breathing disturbances. There’s also up to 30 minutes of fast charging, and according to Apple, you can expect about 18 hours of battery life from a full charge.

The Watch Series 10 starts at $399 and is available today in various finishes including Silver, Jet Black and Rose Gold. There is also a new titanium version available in Natural, Gold and Dark Slate Grey

There weren’t any significant updates to the Ultra 2 besides a new satin black finish and a titanium black Milanese loop strap. It is available starting today.

AirPods 4

AirPods 4 Active Noise Canceling

AirPods 4 Active Noise Canceling

The latest AirPods have significant upgrades including a more comfortable design and improved audio quality. The active noise canceling version of the AirPods 4 can adjust the sound and adapt to your environment similar to a feature found in the AirPods Pro models. The new AirPods with noise canceling essentially give you an AirPods Pro experience at a much more affordable price point. You would expect the lack of a proper seal to be a problem for the Apple AirPods 4 and its open-ear design, but the noise-canceling effectively blocks sound. Both versions are sweat and dust-resistant and use USB-C charging, while the noise-canceling version also supports Magsafe charging. The basic AirPods 4 costs $129 and the noise-canceling version costs $179, both models are available right now.
