Over the decades, man has come up with several unique and resourceful inventions. The computer and machines have begun to control and replace the important functions earlier performed by man. We have grown extremely dependent on artificial intelligence. However, it is widely believed that artificial intelligence cannot replace human intelligence, as man is the creator of machines.

Human brain can work constantly and more efficiently to create and make use of something wisely. Humans are capable of learning, grasping, understanding the concept of various things. Humans are curious to discover and create new things. Humans are multi-talented whereas machines are not. Artificial intelligence is also created by human brains and their functions are limited.

Essay on Man Vs Machine – Which Is Better – Essay 2 (300 Words)

Introduction

While man is the inventor of machines, he is also highly dependent on the machines. After industrial revolution man has developed and progressed rapidly. Machines and modern technology have given him comfort, facilities and leisure in life. From simple calculations to mass production of things – everything we need in today’s fast paced life is assisted by machines.

Man vs. Machine: Which is better?

The products are finely made with the help of machines and have a better finish compared to the human made products. Machines can manufacture things in larger quantities compared to man and at greater speed. Whether it is clothing, footwear or jewellery, everything produced by machines has a good finish.

Artificial intelligence not only save lot of time and energy but is also a medium of entertainment for man. Today man cannot imagine his life without smart phones, laptops, music systems, television sets, washing machines and other such equipments. Humans and machines are not competitors, but humans collaborate with machines for more productivity, speed and accuracy. From communication to travelling everything has become simple and speedy. Mans seeks help of the machines for all the activities he does. There are countless uses of machines. Machines are responsible for rapid development in the present day world.

However, we must not forget that machines are a creation of man. So, surely man is superior to machines. He has become handicapped in a way as physically he has become less active and is dependent on machines. Man is a greedy animal who wants more and more. Even though machines have made the life of man easy, he has no time and patience to live peaceful life.

In a way, I think machines have made human life entertaining as well as dull as he has no time and patience to work hard or enjoy the natural beauty of the world. The collaboration of man and machines, I think is the best though it can have both positive as well as negative impact on mankind.

Essay on Man vs. Machine: Human Brain or Machine Power? – Essay 3 (400 Words)

Human beings and machines work differently. We all know machines are the creation of Human. Machines were created to make human life easier. Humans highly depend on machines and there is a new revolution. A machine is only a motorized gadget consisting of different parts. Machines perform different functions but do not have life like humans.

Machines are a Creation of Mankind

Humans are created of flesh and blood, they have a life. Humans have emotions and feelings; they express different emotions at different times. Machines are mechanical and they work with their mechanical brain which is programmed by humans. Humans understand the situation and respond accordingly whereas machines do not have the capability of understanding. Humans are creative and imaginative.

Humans can create and invent new things but machines cannot. Machines are operated and guided by humans. Humans are blessed with intelligence and emotions while machines have artificial intelligence. Humans have diverse abilities at several things including language abilities, pattern recognition and creative thinking. When it comes to socializing, data analysis or having opinions humans are certainly ahead of the machines.

Use of Machines

There are different machines like televisions, refrigerators, music systems, home theatres, washing machines and so on for diverse uses. Our life is become much simpler with the use of these machines. Machines are much faster when it comes to processing information and performing calculations with accuracy and speed as compared to humans. Computers obviously have better memory compared to humans and can be fed with large amount of information.

Machines work effortlessly and more efficiently than humans. The products can be produced in larger quantities at much greater speed with the help of machines. Easy communication is possible from anywhere in the world with cell phones. One can travel at super fast speed anywhere in the world with the help of transport facilities. Research and sharing opinions from anywhere in the world has become much easier. Moreover, machines are not influenced by feelings or emotions unlike humans.

So, humans and machines both are very powerful. There are some processes where machines certainly do a better job than humans and vice versa. Humans are blessed with intelligence and power while machines possess artificial intelligence. Human intelligence is far better than artificial intelligence but the collaboration of both is the best. Humans can definitely not do without artificial intelligence in present day scenario. Both human brain and machines need to go hand in hand for development and better future.

Essay on Man vs. Machine – What Do You Prefer – Essay 4 (500 Words)

We are now living in a tech-savvy world filled with objects like smart phones, computers and tablets that have become an integral part of our life. It is now hard to imagine our lives without artificial intelligence. The progress that we have made from mobile phones to smart phones and computers to laptops, cable television’s to satellites, we wonder what is going to be next in this line of progress. It is even predicted that artificial intelligence may exceed human intelligence. However evolution in artificial intelligence is the result of evolution in human intelligence. Can artificial intelligence exist without human existence?

What Do I Prefer?

We are highly dependent on artificial intelligence and cannot imagine our lives without it anymore, be it for work, entertainment, studies or sharing opinions. Human collaboration with artificial intelligence has grown immensely. Machines make our lives easy but cannot replace the humans in our lives. Humans are the creators and operators of machines. Human intelligence has an edge over artificial intelligence as it has the ability to create unlike computers and it is not operated by machines.

Human and Emotional Needs

We are addicted to machines. But what about our emotional needs? Can we talk to machine? Can we share our feelings with the machines? Can we fall in love with the machines? Can machines feel emotions? Can we just live with machines? Though these days we spend more time with machines than humans, we turn up to humans at the end of the day. We are greedy creatures, aren’t we? Humans are emotional creatures and have several emotional needs. They can also easily get carried away with emotions. They often get stressed out by various events in their life. Emotions blur the effectiveness of human brain to make precise and logical decisions. Human brain is never as stable as machines. Human brain is highly influenced by emotions.

Humans matter to us the most and that is the important thing to keep in mind. We don’t want to interact with machines instead of humans. Technology exists to replace our shopping experience locally to online shopping, but not everyone prefers online shopping. Some people like to visit shopping malls personally, try different dresses and enjoy that experience. When it comes to dealing with stress, we still need to consult a stress management consultant and not machines. Nothing can replace human communication. Just because technology is at hand doesn’t mean it is going to replace humans or be a better option all the time.

I personally prefer human interaction compared to interacting with a machine to shop or raise a service complaint. I also enjoy the company of humans rather than staying glued to the television or mobile phone. Humans have emotions and feelings and dealing with them is a much better experience. Humans are not just controlled by brain but also by their heart. Human brain and heart is closely connected, creating an emotional whole. So, though machines have become a part of our lives but for me, I am a heart person so I would definitely prefer humans over machines.

Long Essay on Man vs. Machine – Essay 5 (600 Words)

When it comes to artificial intelligence vs. human brain, there are people who strongly believe in artificial intelligence and those who don’t. Humans surely are dependent on machines which has its pros and cons. There surely is no black and white. It all depends on who is developing it for what purpose.

What do We Prefer?

Humans have a strong need to interact with each other. Communication is not possible with machines. Call centres use IVR (Interactive voice response) and we get irritated with live person not responding on the call. Every time we call for customer service, whether it is for issue with the cell or for shopping assistance or for making some enquiry, we are guided to IVR. It is irritating since we have to unnecessarily go through a long menu and we cannot express ourselves to the machines. Can we live a life where we can only interact with machines and not with humans? We always prefer people to communicate. We feel comfortable expressing, probing and getting our problems solved with humans.

Impact of Modern Technology on Human Life

  • Unemployment: Machines and new technology is replacing man power for certain jobs which is no surprise. This is the most and widely known drawback of the machines. We all know that certain jobs are disappearing as those are totally being replaced by machineries. Industrial revolution has also to unemployment. There has been loss of medium skill jobs in various sectors. It has also been predicted that there would be large scale job losses due to modern technology and more and more man power is expected to be replaced by machines.
  • Competency: Increased dependency on modern technology like calculators and computers has reduced human creativity and intelligence. Many people today struggle with simple calculations and spellings without using artificial intelligence. Though these tools make our life simple we may become highly dependent on them.
  • Wars and Destruction: The connection between artificial intelligence and nuclear war is well known. Modern technology is a major cause of increasing war due to manufacturing of modern weapons. There is positive impact of artificial intelligence while there is also the fear that artificial intelligence may exceed human intelligence which can lead to many doomsday scenarios.
  • Health: The radiation released from smart phones is absorbed by human bodies which can cause tumour. Smart phone against ear for long time also increases the possibilities of brain tumour and can cause cancer if not treated. Excessive use of phones also leads to chronic stress. There is always anxiousness and lookout for messages or replies from your friends or other notifications as well. These days everyone is craving for attention on social media and if one doesn’t get attention then it makes them stressed and depressed.
  • Environment: We are dependent on modern technology so the power consumption has increased. Increasing use of vehicles has increased air pollution that is damaging the environment. The effect of technology on our environment is severe and is responsible for drastic climate changes. Global warming is leading to several diseases in humans. There is also extinction of several birds, plant and animal species due to the changes in climate. It has caused highly negative impact on environment and has damaged the nature as a whole.

Thus, machines are a part of our lives and are helpful in several ways but we cannot ignore the negative impact it has on our lives. There is no competition between humans and machines as humans are the creators. Humans have created machines for various purposes. It is important to know that for what purpose the artificial intelligence is being developed and whether it has positive or negative impact on human life. Human brain is so powerful that it can use machines for creation as well as destruction.

Topics suitable for the fifth and sixth grades of primary school, and the first, second, and third grades of middle school and high school. In it, we explain the role of machines in increasing production and providing manpower, and we provide an explanation of examples of the role of machines in the field of agriculture, industry, the medical field, and the role of machines in the field of transportation and communication and other areas of life.

Essay on machines

The development of the machine has gone through many stages, and the goal has always been to achieve the most production in the least time and least effort, and in essay on machines I will explain the importance of the machine in our lives, and how it has become an essential and indispensable part of our life, we use the machine in household chores such as Broom, mixer, refrigerator, kneading machine, washing machine and many other tools that facilitate household chores.

Machines play a great role in the agricultural field, where machines have made a huge development in the agricultural field, and among the machines used in agriculture are tractors, seeders, harvesters, modern irrigation machines, and other very useful agricultural machines. And machines play a great role in the industrial field, so that machines have become operating by self-orders.

Also, the role of machines is very important in the field of transportation and moving from one place to another, and machines are mainly used in wars. There are certainly many benefits of using the machine, but there are also some drawbacks.

Define the machine

A machine is a tool that helps a person to accomplish his work very quickly and with less effort, and there are many machines that we rely on in our daily lives.

The machine has become an essential part of our life, and the machines differ in terms of function, there are very simple machines, and complex machines that include advanced technology.

In all cases, the machine makes it easier for humans to complete tasks, and it can perform difficult tasks that humans cannot do.

Types of machines

There are many types of machines, which operate in different fields such as the agricultural, industrial, military and other fields of life.

Agricultural machinery

Agricultural machinery has made great progress in the agricultural field, saving effort and time, as one person can produce enough food for 100 people.

Among the most important agricultural machines are tractors, harvesters, seeders and other machines that are used in agriculture. These machines have become more powerful and more advanced, and the machine has become used in cultivating large areas in a modern way.

Machines are also used to harvest crops, vegetables and fruits, and then transport and package them using modern machines as well. The agricultural machine has provided a lot of manpower, and machines are used in agricultural production and animal production as well.

Industrial machinery

There was an industrial revolution in the middle of the eighteenth century, it is important to write in an essay on machines about the role of machines in the development of industry, as huge changes occurred in the industry.

And that is when machines were used in the cotton industry and the mining industry, and the manual industry was developed into industry using the machine, and the steam engine was discovered, and the machines were developed amazingly by using different types of fuel.

And machines became dependent on electricity in their work, as modern technology caught up with them, so machines became more productive, and modern machines do not need the intervention of the worker except for some simple orders.

In the current era, machines have become more sophisticated, and there is no longer a link between the machine and the worker. The process of managing the machines has become self-managing through automatic control.

The use of machines in the medical field

There is no doubt that the use of machines in the medical field has had a great impact in treating many diseases.

In the current era, most surgeries are done using binoculars, and this made surgeries more accurate and less dangerous, and also reduced the complications that the patient was exposed to when performing the operation in the traditional way.

There has also been tremendous progress in radiology devices, which helped to detect diseases early and thus treat diseases early. Machines are also used in operations that require precision, such as vision correction operations and others. Ventilators played a major role in saving people’s lives during the Corona pandemic.

The use of machines in the field of transportation and communications

Undoubtedly, the tremendous development in the field of transportation and communication has helped promote local and international trade. There has been tremendous development in all means of land, sea and air transport, as well as lifting and packing machines.

And you can explain in an essay on machines how to transport goods from one country to another, regardless of the quality of the goods, solid, liquid or gaseous, and examples of this are the transportation of oil and gas by giant trucks and ships.

Modern transportation has also contributed to the boom in tourism, as travel has become more comfortable and less expensive.

Old and new instruments

In the past, machines were simple and relied on simple ideas such as the inclined surface, the lever, the pulley, and other simple ideas. The person was happy with these machines because they facilitated his work, which depended on making a great effort and needed muscular strength to accomplish the work.

Then the machines developed little by little and their installation became complicated, but they became more useful as they saved effort and time.

And in our time, technological progress has become in all fields, and machines have become more complex, as modern technology is one of its basic components, but the role of the machine has evolved greatly, and it has become more productive.

General tips for maintaining machines

There are some general tips that the worker must take to maintain the machine for as long as possible, and in order to preserve the safety of the worker, the most important of these tips must also be explained in the essay on machines, such as:

  • Follow the manufacturers’ instructions when performing periodic maintenance of machines, as well as when repairing faults.
  • Inspect machines periodically to ensure the integrity of their parts, and to ensure that there are no missing or broken parts.
  • Follow the manufacturers’ instructions to clean the equipment, and ensure its operational performance.
  • Replace damaged parts immediately and not postpone or resort to temporary repairs.
  • Ensure that brakes or levers are secured to prevent the machine from moving before starting maintenance work.
  • Follow the general safety procedures for maintaining or repairing machines, such as wearing protective clothing (head helmets, protective glasses, gloves, ear protection headphones, safety shoes) and other measures that preserve the worker’s life.
  • Replace any protective cover removed (during maintenance) before using the machine.
  • There should be regular maintenance of machines checked by specialized engineers.

Benefits of using machines

There is no doubt that the benefits of machines are great, and the development of machines will continue to obtain the best results from the machine. In the essay on machines, you must write the most important benefits of using machines as follows:

Increasing production: There is no doubt that one machine can do the work of thousands of people, and thus there is a huge increase in production.

Production speed: The machine saves time, as it is very fast compared to manual work, and therefore it saves time.

Accuracy and quality: The machines are more accurate and thus we will get higher quality products.

Reducing risks: We can rely on machines to perform dangerous and difficult work.

Reducing the cost of production: There is no doubt that machines reduce the cost of production, because they produce huge quantities of the product in the least amount of time.

Disadvantages of using machines

There is no doubt that the benefits of using the machine are many, but there are some disadvantages that negatively affect some people, such as:

Dispensing with many workers: This is considered one of the most serious disadvantages of using the machine, as many people lost their jobs, and the unemployment rate increased.

The spread of poverty among the working groups: The use of the machine has led to the spread of poverty in some groups, especially the workers groups who have lost their jobs.

The emergence of different classes in society: so that there are very rich groups as a result of owning machines and obtaining a lot of money, and very poor groups because they cannot find work.

At the end of the essay on machines, I talked about the definition of machines, the types of machines, the benefits of using machines, the disadvantages of using machines, and machines have become an essential thing in our lives, we use them in all areas of life.

Every day we see the development of machines and an improvement in their performance to obtain the best production, and the aim of using machines is to improve human life and make it easier and more comfortable.

There is no doubt that our ancestors and parents are well aware of the tremendous development that occurred in our way of life as a result of the development of machines. They always talk about the great effort that they used to make in their work.

As for today, we are in the era of technology, we only need to press a button in order for the machine to operate, and to produce more quality products, and more in number.

I hope you have benefited from the essay on machines.

Man and Machine Essay

The modern age is the age of machines. Throughout the day and even at night, we are surrounded by the midst of machines.

We get up early in the morning on the alarm of a clock. We heat the water (in winter) with the help of an electric geyser or gas over the gas oven.

We take breakfast of pieces of bread roasted in a toaster and then we go to school or college or our place of work by bike, scooter, car, or whatever vehicle we have.

If we have to travel to someplace, we do so by car, bus, train, airplane, or ship or boat.

In the present age, there is mass production of goods in factories and mills with the help of huge machines.

If we have to visit a doctor or go to a hospital, we are confronted with several machines such as the stethoscope, the stretcher, the ECG, the EEG, the X-rays, the scanner, etc.

Most of the eatables we get such as vegetables, fruits, grains, pulses, sugar, kerosene, petrol, diesel, cooking oil, etc are carried to us in trucks, railway wagons, carts, ships, boats, etc.

Even the water we drink is brought to us through taps and it may have been pumped out from the underground level with the help of machines.

Similarly, we have so many kinds of other machines. They work for us and help us. The Computer and the Robot are two great modern machines.

Machines save time for us. But they have to be looked after and if they cause unemployment or excessive noise or some other inconvenience, they become a nuisance.

Still, we must remember even the human body is a machine. So, machines are not altogether bad.

Write an essay on man vs machine.

The following is an essay on Man vs Machine

An Essay on Man vs Machine

Introduction :

In our childhood, all of us learnt the story of Aladin and his Jinn who performed amazing feats by his magical power. But today, the feats performed by modern machines are far more amazing than the feats performed by Jinn.

Today we can say that machine has emerged as an essential part knocking at the every door of human life with the ever increasing impact of science. It has brought the world to our drawing room. Sitting in our own house, we can see a match being played far away from us. Just pressing a button we can dip ourselves into the world of luxury and relaxation. All these have been achieved with the help of machines.

Machine as a reliever :

Primitive men had to work in the midst of great troubles and dangers. But the marvellous invention of modern machines has done away with those disadvantages. Ever since man started scientific experimentation, he has been trying to relieve himself of weary, monotonous, time consuming works.

He found walking tiresom and invented the bicycle, the motor car, train, aeroplane and even rocket. Agriculture plays an important part in a country’s economy.

So he wanted to cut down the time taking method of tilling and harvesting and kept on transferring most of his work to machines. Tractors, water pump and other scientific implements have enabled men to relieve them from laborious work.

After the industrial revolution, we find that industry has been completely mechanized. These are two important factors of a country’s economy where machines have stepped surely and steadily.

The impact of machines in our daily life:

Machines are today inseparable from the life of a man. Machines have been inserted in the life of a man from the very starting of a day to the rest of the day. He is roused from his bed by means of an alarm clock which is a machine.

Next he goes to wash his face and opens the tap which is itself a small machine. We eat our breakfast which is also prepared with the help of machines. The clothes we wear are mechanically produced. The newspaper which we read every morning is also printed in machine.

Then machines take us to our place of work by means of train, bus or car. In our working places, either we directly operate machines or work with the help of things manufactured by machines. After day’s work man needs some relaxation. If he feels hot, then he turns on a fan, cooler or an air-conditioner. In winter, he switches on an electric heater.

He can have television, a DVD or CD player to refresh his mind. Two of the most wonderful inventions of modern science are telephone and a computer which are also machines. These are two machines without which the modern civilisation may be plunged into darkness. Even the housewife has found her kitchen work a kind of drudgery.

But the latest electrical appliances like pressure cookers, mixers, refrigerators, microwaves, washing machines etc have made her work a mere fun. Lastly, the medicines possessed of wonderful powers to cure illness are produced with the help of machines.

Dark sides of machines:

But a very deplorable fact about the modern age of machines is that the relationship between the man and the machines is getting perverted. Machine has an artificial intelligence. It is always guided and controlled by the man.

Man has the emotions and intelligence to use them whenever he wants to. Machines may be considered as an extra organ of a man. They are men’s slave like Aladdin’s Jinn. But today machines have become so powerful that it is man who has been reduced to the level of a slave.

Man’s too much dependence on machines has reduced his creativity, efficiency and intelligence. Machines have no doubt fulfilled his material needs but machines have made him a prey to evil ambition. Besides, the huge implementation of machines has caused unemployment.

Conclusion:

It will be apt to conclude that although machines have relieved man of much of his irksome work but the fight on the relevance of machines in man’s life will ever remain a subject of argument until and unless human beings utilize machines judiciously. We do not know what more marvels machines will unveil in the days to come.

Simple English Essay on Man Vs Machine for Children and Students

The man had evolved for better and changed totally since stone-age when man needed to endeavor to meet his essential needs. This is the period of science and technology. Man and machines work adequately and precisely together.

Man is the innovator and operator of machines, and then again, man is additionally profoundly subject to machines in his ordinary assignments. The majority of our everyday exercises are performed with the assistance of machines. This saves a great deal of vitality and time.

Example #1 of Simple English Essay on Man Vs Machine for Children and Students

Throughout the decades, man has thought of a few extraordinary and ingenious inventions. The PC and machines have started to control and supplant the significant capacities prior performed by man. We have become amazingly reliant on man-made consciousness. In any case, it is broadly accepted that computerized reasoning can’t supplant human insight, a man is the maker of machines.

A human mind can work continually and all the more productively to make and utilize something astutely. Man is fit for picking up, getting a handle on, understanding the idea of different things. Man is interested in finding and making new things. Man is multi-gifted while machines are definitely not. Human minds likewise make Man-made reasoning, and their capacities are constrained.

Machines are better than men regarding velocity and exactness. Number crunchers, for instance, work more precisely and expediently than human minds to make computations. Human mind programs the working of any sort of machine. The human brain usually grows by watching, experimenting, learning, and finding, yet the improvement in hardware is conceivable just when man bolsters its mechanical mind. Additionally, there is no passionate insight into machines. Feelings assume a significant job in creating the human mind.

Along these lines, the limit of machines is constrained while men are continually experimenting, inventing, developing, and finding to an ever-increasing extent.

Example #2 of Simple English Essay on Man Vs Machine for Children and Students

We are presently living in a technically knowledgeable world loaded up with objects like advanced mobile phones, PCs, and tablets that have become an indispensable piece of our life. It is currently difficult to envision our lives without man-made brainpower.

The advancement that we have produced using cell phones to PDAs and PCs to PCs, digital TVs to satellites, we wonder what will be next in this line of progress. It is even anticipated that man-made reasoning may surpass human knowledge. Anyway, advancement in computerized reasoning is the aftereffect of development in human insight. Could man-made consciousness exist without human presence?

We are profoundly subject to man-made reasoning and can’t envision our lives without it any longer, be it for work, amusement, studies, or imparting insights. Human coordinated effort with man-made consciousness has evolved monstrously. Machines make our lives simple; however, we can’t supplant the man in our lives. Men are the makers and operators of machines. Human insight has the edge over man-made consciousness as it can make not at all like PCs, and machines don’t work it.

We are dependent on machines. In any case, shouldn’t something be said about our enthusiastic needs? Would we be able to converse with the machine? Would we be able to impart our sentiments to the machines? Would we be able to go gaga for the machines? Will machines feel feelings? Will we simply live with machines? Even though nowadays we invest more energy with machines than men, we go up to man toward the day’s end.

We are greedy by nature, right? Man are enthusiastic animals and have a few passionate needs. They can likewise effectively lose control of feelings. They frequently get worried on different occasions throughout their life. Feelings obscure the viability of the human mind to settle on exact and consistent choices. The human brain is never as steady as machines. The human cerebrum is exceptionally affected by feelings.

Man matters to us the most, and that is the significant thing to remember. We would prefer not to associate with machines rather than men. The technology exists to supplant our shopping experience locally to web-based shopping, yet not every person leans towards web-based shopping. A few men like to visit shopping centers by and by, attempt various dresses, and appreciate that experience. With regards to managing pressure, despite everything, we have to counsel a pressure the executive’s advisor and not machines. Nothing can supplant human correspondence. Because technology is close by doesn’t mean it will replace man or be a superior alternative always.

The Final Words

I, incline toward human interaction as compared with connecting with a machine to shop or raise an assistance grumbling. I additionally appreciate the organization of man instead of remaining stuck to the TV or cell phone. Man has feelings and emotions, and managing them is a vastly improved encounter. Man is constrained by cerebrum as well as by their heart. The human mind and heart are firmly associated, inventing a passionate entirety. Along these lines, however, machines have become a piece of our lives, yet for me, I am a heart individual so I would incline toward man over machines.

Essay on “Man and Machines” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Man and Machines

Today man can have many of his needs met by merely pushing a button. Machines have made a tremendous impact on the life of man. Invention of wheel was the turning point in man’s life. It set the ball rolling and new gadgets and machines kept on coming out of industries to take the drudgery out of man’s life. However, man who had invented machines to serve him, became too dependent on them. This has affected mans health, environment and the very life on the planet. Man should ensure that machines do not destroy him and save the life of all living beings on this planet from annihilation.

Science and technology have made tremendous progress in the last two centuries and almost revolutionized human existence. Every aspect of human life has been affected by it. Today, it seems almost unreal that there was a time thousands of years ago, when our primitive ancestors were at the mercy of forces of nature and spent their entire life time grappling with them and hunting for food to keep themselves together. It is indeed difficult for man to ever visualize their lives as today he can have most of his needs met by merely pressing a button. One cannot but help marvel at the ingenuity of our ancestors who with their perseverance and hard work managed to unravel the mysteries of nature and gradually learnt to live in harmony with  them instead of being in awe of them.

It has been universally acknowledged that the invention of the wheel was the turning point in human life. It is amazing how this single invention has contributed more to civilization than perhaps any other invention. It enabled invent means of transport, each faster than the previous one. Where earlier, man had to walk to get anywhere; today man has the choice of going by coach, wagon, bicycle, motorcycle, bus, train, steamer or an aeroplane.

There has been no looking back since then.  Man used his faculties to invent different kinds of machines to take the drudgery out of his life. It has always been man’s dream to have a kind of Aladdin’s genie who could serve him. Today man can easily boast of having invented machines which are always at his back and call. All he has to do is to press a few buttons. Life has indeed become comfortable with the inventions of machines. It has taken the drudgery out of everyday life. It is difficult to imagine life without them. In earlier times there were no rapid means of transport and communication. It is short of miracle that today we can travel around the world by air in less than 24 hours. We can communicate with our loved ones over long distance on telephone or send messages that reach them instantly Facsimile.

Machines have ma life the life of housewives easy. Today, there are many different kinds of gadgets which help a woman to do her work in minutes where earlier the entire day was taken up by tasks as cumbersome as grinding etc. As a consequences she has plenty of time on her hands to pursue her other interests.

There is no doubt that in this age of automation man’s life is more comfortable than that of his forefathers. However, it is a moot whether the quality of life has also improved. It may be argued that the life is easier, but it cannot be said with guarantee that machines have not had any negative impact on the life of  man.

Man had invented machines to serve him. But somewhere along the way, he became servile to them. Today, he is totally dependent on them and feels utterly helpless when a machine disobeys him. His whole life falls out of gear. Man has forgotten to use his body. He has more prone to disease due to lack of exercise. The human body is also like a machine. It has its needs. Exercise is one of them. It helps to keep the muscles and joint supple. All his needs are met by very few buttons. Thus, the very instruments which man had invented for improving his life are becoming a threat to his wellbeing.

Mans curiosity has taken him out of the space to explore life of on other planets. He has designed spaceships with his scientific and technical knowledge. Such exploration has really helped to satisfy mans insatiable urge for understanding the mysteries of nature and the quest goes on. But as long as outer space is used for gaining an understanding of our universe, it is fine, but when outer space is used to settle scores among not so friendly nations and leads to star wars, then the same knowledge and instruments become destructive and are a threat to mans existence and the planet earth.

It cannot be denied that the inventions of latest machines helped mankind in all sphere of life. The latest advances in technology have made it possible to treat diseases which were hitherto considered incurable. Food production and quality of goods have improved. When machines have benefitted mankind in so many ways, they have sincerely tried to avoid wars. In the event of a third world war, the whole world is in danger of annihilation. Human race may be wiped out from this planet as a result thereof.

Making Positive Use of Machine Translation for Writing Essays

Although they remain controversial, machine translation (MT) tools such as Google Translate have become much more accurate and popular in recent years. The switch from “phrase-based” translation systems to “neural” algorithms was a milestone in quality improvements for Google Translate (Le & Schuster, 2016; Caswell & Liang, 2020). A major difference between phrase-based and neural systems is explained by Google research scientists:

Whereas Phrase-Based Machine Translation (PBMT) breaks an input sentence into words and phrases to be translated largely independently, Neural Machine Translation (NMT) considers the entire input sentence as a unit for translation (Le & Schuster, 2016).

Compared to the previous phrase-based systems, Google asserts that neural machine systems produce translations that are immensely improved, reducing translation errors by more than 55%–85% on some major language pairs (Le & Schuster, 2016). Similarly, a recent independent reevaluation study looking at 51 of the 103 languages available reported an increase in accuracy of 34% over an original evaluation study carried out eight years earlier (Aiken, 2019). Even in some languages (such as Japanese and Korean) which are known to be notoriously difficult to translate, there have been discernible improvements.

The controversy is that MT tools might allow students to complete assigned writing tasks without thinking about the language and producing it themselves (and therefore unlikely to learn much or improve their writing skills in the process). However, some university teachers have begun to see the benefits of MT and are seeking ways to encourage students to make positive use of it while avoiding its pitfalls (Lee, 2020; Oda, 2020). The purpose of the present article is twofold: First, to summarize the benefits and drawbacks of MT, and second, to introduce some guiding principles and an awareness-raising activity that will help university students make positive use of MT when researching and writing essays.

Benefits and Drawbacks of MT

Research suggests that MT can help improve EFL students’ writing by raising awareness of their lexical and grammatical errors and assisting students in developing positive writing strategies (Lee, 2020). It can be satisfying for EFL students to use Google Translate in their English writing, especially in finding vocabulary items and in helping complete assigned writing tasks (Tsai, 2019). Oda (2020) found that when it comes to writing speeches in English, MT offers other advantages such as subject-verb agreement, verb and object combination, and translating numbers, making MT more useful than dictionaries for novice and intermediate students.

Students learning English in Japanese universities are often asked to submit essays and speeches. These types of assignments require background research and expressing one’s ideas in the form of sentences or paragraphs. MT is arguably an invaluable tool when students research an essay or speech topic, especially when reading source materials in their first language. Students can use it to translate sentences or paragraphs, or entire web pages in real-time. If they use the Google Translate Chrome Extension tool, they can hover their mouse over a chunk of selected text, click a pop-up button, and the translation results will appear in real-time.

One main drawback of MT is that the translation results are often far from perfect, depending on various factors (e.g., similarity of language pairs and complexity of sentences inputted). One crucial problem is that students may be tempted to copy large chunks of machine-translated text and simply paste it into their essay with barely any effort to paraphrase it. Students might think that, since the translation came from Google Translate, they can just use it as is (without paraphrasing it) while citing the source. They also might think that, since the original text was written in a different language, the teacher might not take the time to check the original source. My experience checking students’ references (and reading the original texts in their first language) revealed this problem existed in several of my intermediate-level students’ essays, so it seems possible that this use of Google Translate is a writing strategy employed by some students. This problem seems to stem from the difficulty of paraphrasing in general and in a second language in particular.

Tips and Rules for Making Positive Use of MT

Oda (2020) offered some tips and rules to help university students in Japan use MT to write speech drafts in English effectively. In short, her Golden Rules for students using MT when writing speeches are: Adopt a translation result only if:

  • you understand it,
  • you can memorize it (or, at least, read it smoothly) for your speech, and
  • you bear responsibility for what you say.

Students who follow these rules while using MT to aid in their speech-writing activities will be more likely to choose English suitable for their proficiency level and create a speech draft that they can deliver successfully. Although these rules are beneficial for writing speeches, they leave much to be desired when it comes to using MT for other purposes such as researching and writing essays in English.

Thus, when introducing MT as a possible tool for researching and writing essays, it is essential to establish a few ground rules to help students steer clear of pitfalls. I suggest that teachers encourage students to follow what are herein called the Guiding Principles for using MT in researching and writing essays.

The Guiding Principles for Using MT in Researching and Writing Essays

If you use MT to translate someone else’s writing, you will need to paraphrase and cite the translated output. In other words, if you did not write the sentences that you inputted into Google Translate, then you will need to paraphrase the translation results before you can use them (with a citation) in your essay. If you do not paraphrase the translation results, you could be at risk of committing plagiarism.

If you use machine translation to translate your own writing, it might not be necessary to paraphrase the translation results, depending on the accuracy of the translation results. In other words, if you wrote the sentences that you inputted into Google Translate, then you might not have to do any paraphrasing of the translation results because the input was your original writing. The output will be a translation of your original sentences. However, the translation results will likely need editing to make it read accurately and smoothly, especially if you wrote and translated long sentences. Do use a good dictionary to check the accuracy of individual words or expressions from the translated output.

You bear responsibility for what you write. You are responsible for choosing carefully what you write in your essay. This means that, if you are careless about the use of MT in your writing, you will bear the consequences (e.g., you may get a low or zero score on your essay or course, depending on how serious the misuse is and how strict your teacher is).

Students will benefit from learning how to paraphrase the translation results. Paraphrasing means rewriting someone else’s ideas or sentences using your own words without changing the original text’s meaning. In academic writing, paraphrasing is an alternative to quoting. It is usually considered better than quoting because when students can rewrite the ideas in their own words, it shows that they understand the concepts and makes their writing more original. According to Gahan (2018), five easy steps to paraphrasing are:

  • Read the passage several times to fully understand the meaning.
  • Make a note of key concepts.
  • Write your version of the text without looking at the original.
  • Compare your paraphrased text with the original passage and make minor adjustments to phrases that remain too similar.
  • Cite the source of the ideas you are using.

These steps can be tricky for EFL learners, so teachers need to give them support and tips on paraphrasing effectively. Here are four clever ways that can help students to paraphrase effectively (adapted from Gahan, 2018):

  • Start your sentence differently from that of the original source.
  • Use synonyms (words or phrases that mean exactly or nearly the same thing as another word or phrase in the same language).
  • Change the sentence structure (e.g., from active to passive voice).
  • Separate (or combine) the information into more (or fewer) sentences.

In order to raise awareness of the above steps, I suggest trying an activity that will (hopefully) appeal to students as digital natives: Ask students to watch a video on YouTube, read an online article and do a quiz (via Google Forms) that is designed to give them immediate feedback in a self-study manner. Here is a link to a copy of such a quiz I created containing an embedded YouTube video and a link to an online article titled “How to paraphrase sources” (Gahan, 2018) that students can read before answering some questions to self-check their understanding: https://forms.gle/fj9VnJr7oskjozxU6

This awareness-raising approach and the affixed materials can be implemented face-to-face or via remote learning.

It is essential that students are also taught how to check their paraphrasing using good dictionaries so that MT does not appear to be a complete replacement for dictionaries. No matter how useful MT becomes, dictionaries still have an essential role in checking for accuracy.

This article has summarized some advantages and drawbacks of using MT to research and write essays. It has suggested some guiding principles that students can follow to avoid the pitfalls of MT. It has also shared an awareness-raising activity with digital materials that can be used face-to-face and via distance learning.

As the use of MT becomes more widespread and inevitable, teachers have an essential role in guiding students and training them in the responsible use of MT, online dictionaries and other resources for second language writing.

Man vs. Machine Essay

Long and short essay on man vs. machine in english for children and students.

' data-src=

Humans have evolved and transformed excessively since stone-age when man had to work hard for his basic needs. This is the age of science and technology. Man and machines work effectively and accurately together. Man is the inventor and operator of machines and on the other hand man is also highly dependent on machines in his day to day life. Most of our day to day activities are performed with the help of machines. This saves a lot of energy and time.

Long and Short Essay on Man vs. Machine in English

Here are essays on Man vs. Machine of varying lengths to help you with the topic in the exams/school assignments. You can choose any Man vs. Machine essay according to your requirements:

Short Essay on Man vs. Machine – Essay 1 (200 Words)

Machines are superior to humans in terms of speed and accuracy. Calculators for example work more accurately and speedily than human brains to make calculations. Human brain programs the functioning of any kind of machine. Human brains develop naturally by observing, experimenting, learning and discovering, but the improvement in machinery is possible only when its mechanical brain is fed by humans. Also, there is no emotional intelligence in machines. Emotions play a major role in developing human brain.

Thus, the capacity of machines is limited whereas humans are always experimenting, creating, inventing and discovering more and more.

Frequently asked questions

The act of putting someone else’s ideas or words into your own words is called paraphrasing, rephrasing, or rewording. Even though they are often used interchangeably, the terms can mean slightly different things:

Paraphrasing is restating someone else’s ideas or words in your own words while retaining their meaning. Paraphrasing changes sentence structure, word choice, and sentence length to convey the same meaning.

Rephrasing may involve more substantial changes to the original text, including changing the order of sentences or the overall structure of the text.

Rewording is changing individual words in a text without changing its meaning or structure, often using synonyms.

It can. One of the two methods of paraphrasing is called “Fluency.” This will improve the language and fix grammatical errors in the text you’re paraphrasing.

Paraphrasing and using a paraphrasing tool aren’t cheating. It’s a great tool for saving time and coming up with new ways to express yourself in writing.  However, always be sure to credit your sources. Avoid plagiarism.

If you don’t properly cite text paraphrased from another source, you’re plagiarizing. If you use someone else’s text and paraphrase it, you need to credit the original source. You can do that by using citations. There are different styles, like APA, MLA, Harvard, and Chicago. Find more information about citing sources here.

Paraphrasing without crediting the original author is a form of plagiarism , because you’re presenting someone else’s ideas as if they were your own.

However, paraphrasing is not plagiarism if you correctly cite the source . This means including an in-text citation and a full reference, formatted according to your required citation style .

As well as citing, make sure that any paraphrased text is completely rewritten in your own words.

Plagiarism means using someone else’s words or ideas and passing them off as your own. Paraphrasing means putting someone else’s ideas in your own words.

So when does paraphrasing count as plagiarism?

  • Paraphrasing is plagiarism if you don’t properly credit the original author.
  • Paraphrasing is plagiarism if your text is too close to the original wording (even if you cite the source). If you directly copy a sentence or phrase, you should quote it instead.
  • Paraphrasing  is not plagiarism if you put the author’s ideas completely in your own words and properly cite the source .

Essay on “Washing Machine” English Essay, Paragraph, Speech for Class 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 for College and Competitive Exams.

Washing machine.

Until very recently women of the house used the traditional method of washing clothes. The job of washing clothes was thus assigned for one or two days of the week. With the invention of the washing machine, the lady of the house can now wash her clothes daily, without having to store dirt and smelly clothes for a couple of days. A typical washing machine looks like this. It is like a big steel bin. Very much like the tin or brass bins in which our mothers stores rice, wheat, or flour. There is a lid on the top. Inside the tub, there is a wheel that is either attached horizontally to the floor or vertically to the wall. There are two openings one to let the fresh water in and the other to let dirty water out. On one side of the machine, there is a control panel. On it, there are many switches. One of them is the on and off switch. The others are to control the flow of water inside and outside the machine. Some machines have a timer, which controls the duration of the washing, and a water temperature control switch also. One has to put dirty clothes, water, and some detergent inside the tub of the machine and switch it on. After some time the machine through its rotation of the wheel inside the tub cleans the clothes.

How to Write an Essay

Writing a paper in college can feel different from writing one in high school. There are fewer guidelines, different sources and formatting, and a lot more material to cover. Figuring out where to begin and what instructors are looking for is just the beginning.

Let’s conquer that intimidation right now! We’ll help you construct your next college paper by going over everything from structure to perfecting parenthetical and in-text citations and more!

Pre-Writing

Before you sit down to start writing your paper, there are a few things you can do to make the process better and improve your writing and research skills.

1. Choose a Topic

Professors may have a pre-approved list of topics, or they may give you a very general prompt. When choosing a topic, keep a few things in mind.

  • What do you have an opinion about?
  • How do you feel you could do your best work?
  • What knowledge do you already have?

Once you have a topic, the next steps happen almost simultaneously: research and outlining.

2. Research

This is probably the most crucial part of your essay. To write an excellent paper, you need plenty of research to back up your thesis.

In the digital age, academic research takes place mostly online (although your campus brick and mortar library is still an AMAZING and highly underutilized resource). Still, this doesn’t mean that Wikipedia and other user-generated websites are acceptable sources. Use academic search engines such as Academic Search Premier, JSTOR, Google Scholar, and others. If you’re unsure how to access these, check with your campus library.

Here’s one crucial trick: Wikipedia and other user-generated sites are actually great resources, just not to cite directly. Wikipedia, for instance, typically contains a lot of sources in the citations at the bottom that link you to usable, credible resources.

Before you start writing, it can be helpful to outline your paper first. A research paper outline can help keep your paper well-organized and allow you to see what elements of your research and arguments can feed into each other, to keep the essay flowing logically.

You may want to have a rough outline before you dive fully into your research, so that you can focus your search. Have some flexibility, so that if you encounter something that amends your arguments, you have room to include it.

Structure Made Simple

You probably know the five-paragraph essay: intro (with a three-pronged thesis), three body paragraphs, conclusion. The bad news: your college papers are going to be longer than that! The good news: the same principles still apply!

1. Introduction

Start with a quick overview of the topic and relevant background information. This is only a paragraph, so keep it engaging but succinct.

You always need a thesis for a research paper. While it doesn’t have to be three-pronged, it should be a complex sentence that summarizes the main argument of your paper.

This is the most important part of your paper, where your research and the arguments you’re using to support your thesis should go.

What belongs in a college paper? Some require a summary of research, while others want an original argument supported with research.

The key is simpler than you think: have an opinion and back it up.

Think about the debates you have with your friends—maybe over a reality show or whether chocolate chip cookies should be crispy or gooey. You take a stance and you have “proof” as to why it’s the correct answer, right? The same thing applies to your college papers: opinion or theory, finding evidence, and using it to make your point.

4. Conclusion

Use your final paragraph to wrap up your paper. Restate your main thesis, briefly summarize the results of your arguments, and end with a memorable sentence. It doesn’t have to be a “call to action,” but it should leave an impression.

Formatting & Citations

Carefully read your teacher’s directions: Single or double spaced? Do you need a cover page? Is there a specific formatting style you should follow?

Up to now, you’ve probably used one style: MLA. While MLA formatting is commonly used, especially if you’re in a humanities or arts discipline, you should also discover your new best friend: APA format .

The most crucial part of formatting are around the citations. You must include a works cited list and cite your sources according to the required style guide! Within your paper, that means using in-text and parenthetical citations correctly. In general, those citations will include the last name of the author and a page number, year, or both denoting the source—format varies by style. These citations should go next to quotes as well as paraphrased information.

Example 1: MLA format parenthetical citation with a direct quote:

In these cases, “there was not sufficient evidence to conclusively prove or disprove the hypothesis” (Tyler 131), but scientists continued to pursue the theory.

Example 2: APA format parenthetical citation with paraphrased information:

Texts from this era have largely been lost to time, and the primary cause is poor preservation techniques (Jones, 2005, p. 27).

Review & Relax

1. Proofread

Always give your paper one final read-through to check for minor errors. Try to do this the day after you finish your final draft so that you can check it with fresh eyes.

In addition, you can consider running an automated paper check before turning it in. The Citation Machine Plus essay checker was designed for this.

If needed, make revisions. But a word of reassurance: if you’ve done your research and proofreading, you’ve done good work! You don’t have to second-guess yourself.

3. Rejoice! You’re Done!

Before you begin writing, get a refresher on the basics with our grammar guides! Learn about irregular imperfect verbs , answer the question “ what is a possessive pronoun ,” explore demonstrative adjectives , and more!

Not Presenting an Argument

An essay should never be a simple regurgitation of facts. Instead it should present an argument, point of view or interpretation that you are able to support convincingly. Your thesis statement is key in setting the argumentative tone of your essay.

If your statement is one that no reader could try to argue against, you need to look at it again. For example:

“Slavery is wrong”

This is an example of a thesis statement that isn’t debatable. It states a blanket value judgement without saying specifically what you are going argue, backed by evidence.

“The Chinese ‘sweatshop’ industry is as unethical as 17 th -century slavery in colonial America.”

This is an example of a stronger thesis statement that could be debated. The reader knows that you’re going to attempt to prove a specific argument by presenting evidence.

Remember that you need a thesis statement for any paper you write, even a straightforward research paper.

Poor Pacing

An academic essay should have three basic parts:

  • An introduction that includes a thesis statement. This should set out the aim of the essay and present the core argument to be supported.
  • A middle section that serves to persuade the reader with a combination of critical thinking and cited material.
  • A conclusion that sums up the findings of the essay.

The length and detail of each section will depend on the total length of the essay. Here’s a good rule of thumb: If you divide your essay into fifths, the introduction and conclusion should be one fifth each. So a well-structured, 1,000-word essay would have the following approximate structure:

  • Introduction—200 words
  • Body—600 words (split into three 200-word paragraphs)
  • Conclusion—200 words

While this is a rough guide, the point is to keep your essay balanced and moving at the right place. That means no long, rambling introductions!

Bad Grammar or Spelling

Spelling and grammar can account for a significant portion of your overall grade. A few mistakes could mean the difference between a C and a B, or a B and an A, even if your argument is well-reasoned and supported!

Online grammar checking tools mean that there’s absolutely no reason to lose marks for grammar or spelling. Try the grammar and plagiarism checker right here on Citation Machine to get instant suggestions on improving your writing style, grammar and sentence structure.

Incorrect Citations

Citing can be confusing, especially as different subjects prefer different citation styles. If you’re struggling to understand how to cite , online citation generators can help. All that you need to do is check with your professor on which style of citation you should be using (MLA, APA and Chicago style format are common examples) make sure you note down all the required information when doing your research. Then it’s simply a matter of feeding the information into the citation generator and linking your full citation to a parenthetical citation within your paper body (or a footnote, depending on the citation style).

Parroting or Plagiarizing

One of the most serious mistakes that you can make when writing your essay is to not even attempt to cite your sources at all. At its worst, this is plagiarism, which could result in an essay fail or even more serious college sanctions.

Parroting, or repeating someone else’s ideas as if they were your own, is also a form of plagiarism. Remember to cite all sources that you borrow from to strengthen your argument, even if you don’t use a direct quote.

With Citation Machine Plus , you get unlimited plagiarism checks, ensuring that nothing in your essay goes unreferenced. You can even add the citations you missed directly into your paper!

For more citing help, get the lowdown on how to cite a book , website, journal or other type of source material. With these tools and some attention on your part, your next essay can be properly cited and error-free!

Is it time to write a paper AGAIN? Writing can be a time-consuming and tedious process even if you like it. The process is especially tough if you aren’t a big writing fan to begin with. Happily, there are strategies to help make it easier and more rewarding.

Here are a few choice tips to make the writing process more efficient and enjoyable, whether you’re working on an academic research paper or something more creative.

Start off with an outline

Nothing is quite as daunting as looking at a blank screen with no idea where to start. Before you begin working on your paper, create an outline. Decide what the main idea of each paragraph will be, and jot down some bullet points with ideas you want to bring into that paragraph. If you come up with some new thoughts later on, feel free to move away from this initial structure, but an outline is a great place to start.

Try freewriting

Most professional writers will tell you that the secret to good writing is lots of rewriting. Not everything you write needs to be perfectly polished. Grab a pen and a piece of paper, and write whatever comes to your mind. This strategy can be especially effective for creative writing, but there’s no reason it can’t get your thoughts flowing for a research paper, too.

Read out loud as you write

For many students, writing is stressful because of the pressure to find the right words. Try talking out loud to yourself (or even dictating your words into a speech-to-text tool) to get the ideas going. The first draft of your work doesn’t have to have perfectly polished language. Try writing as you would speak, using informal word choices. If the assignment demands greater formality, go back later and clean up your sentences as needed.

Get rid of the internet

The internet is undoubtedly a helpful resource when you’re working on an assignment, but it’s also a major distraction. Put your phone on silent (and out of sight, if possible). If you need to conduct research on the web for your assignment, try using a tool or app to block distracting websites like Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Use a citation tool

Citation tools like Citation Machine make the process of compiling references much easier. These tools will auto-generate citations in styles like MLA , Chicago style format , and APA format . You can export your full list of citations and copy/paste it at the end of your paper. Especially for longer research papers (which might require 10-plus sources), these tools can be a major time saver.

Don’t wait until the last minute

Procrastination is every writer’s biggest enemy. Most instructors can tell when you’ve put time and effort into a paper, rather than scrambling at the last minute to submit something by the deadline. If you find that you work best under pressure, create artificial deadlines for yourself prior to the actual due date. You can also share your work schedule with a friend and ask them to help you hold yourself accountable.

Here are some tips to get your college writing career off to a smashing start:

1. Break Free of Your Paragraph Order

Here’s a little secret: you can write your paper in any! order! you! choose! It is truly the wild, wild west out here in these parts.

It’s difficult to write the introduction first when you have basically no clue what the rest of the paper will look like. By the time you finish typing, your thesis might go in a different direction than you originally intended, or you might uncover newer, better ideas as you write (aka the old ideas look less hot and more hot fire garbage after you see them on the page).

2. Pass It Around

Peer review is great for several reasons: your fellow students are already familiar with the material and what the professor is looking for in your writing. Your stream of consciousness (although vibrant, bold, and a little mysterious, I’m sure), doesn’t always clearly translate to your writing, so it’s helpful for another person to point out areas that aren’t so clear—before your instructor does the same.

3. Bow Down to the Word Count

If you’ve finally typed your last type and come to the horrible realization you’re 100 words below count, try going through your paper once more. There is a 100% chance that at least one topic in your paper is vague, awkward, or confusing. Flesh it out and you’ll have a more convincing, clearer argument in the end.

4. Stop by for a Chat

Don’t be scared to meet one-on-one with your  instructor or TA! It’s a grand time, I promise. But go after you’ve already brainstormed on the prompt. When your instructor asks what you’re thinking of writing about, it’s not helpful for you to shrug your shoulders and blurt out, “I dunno what are YOU writing about?” A little preparation can lead to a thoughtful discussion that will help you refine and streamline your ideas.

5. Learn From the Pros

Tackling an academic essay is difficult if you’ve never seen/heard/read an academic essay. But those rascals are everywhere—search online or pick up a used book on literary criticism and get reading.

Even if you have no earthly idea what the critical essay is talking about, study its structure—how does the essay begin, string its arguments into a healthy thesis, or address potential counterarguments? If you feel uncomfortable finding an essay on your own, ask your instructor for an example.

6. Annotate as You Go

Best advice I’ve gotten from an instructor: always read with a pencil in hand. Put check marks by quotes that make you angry, happy, quizzical, or say yikes, what weirdo wrote this and why do I relate so much! Scribble down your interesting thoughts—you might need your brilliant, original ideas later when you’re researching paper topics or want to contribute to class discussion.

Need to turn your scribblings into something turn-in-able? Learn how to write an annotated bibliography here!

7. Don’t Forget Your Topic Sentences

They ain’t a joke. If you don’t want to do an entire outline but need a good handle on your paper’s overall organization, try writing all your topic sentences (the first and last sentences of each major point/paragraph) first.

Knowing where you want to start and where you want to end will make the writing process so much easier. My Instagram and eating habits were always highly disorganized in school, but my papers KNEW what they wanted out of life.

8. Write Like Yourself

It’s easy to feel insecure when you’re typing that first essay. Even if you feel tempted to beef up your vocabulary a little bit, don’t stray too far from your natural voice. Sometimes we attempt to write quite professionally and satisfactorily, and the consequential consequence is one of undue remorse and alternative versions of such previously mentioned emotion. Yeesh . By all means, develop and elevate your writer’s voice, but keep it your own and not Professor X’s of Scholarly School Y.

9. I’m Baaaa-ck!

After you get the grade, don’t be afraid to go back to office hours and discuss—even if you got an A+ (can I have your secrets please?). Your instructor will likely be able to provide you with additional insight  that didn’t exactly fit in the comment section of your paper, but which can help you a lot next time.

Get scribbling, everyone. And good luck!

While you’re working on your writing, keep a few key things in mind: focus on your argument, cut out the fluff, and check your flow.

Focus on Your Argument

The single most important component of your writing is your argument. Even the most complex syntax and elevated vocabulary can’t make up for a weak thesis or threadbare claims. When thinking through your thesis, take the time to look through multiple, peer-reviewed sources. Looking through academic journals can be a bit intimidating at first, but they have tons of thorough research.

Once you’re more informed on your topic, write a thesis that specifically addresses your assignment’s specifications. One trick is to rephrase the assignment as a question and then make sure your thesis answers that question.

As you write your body paragraphs, ensure you’re making claims that support your thesis, and always remember to pose a counterargument. If you’re not sure which style guide to use when writing your paper, ask your professor or look at your sources and see what style they are written in— MLA format , APA format, etc.—and that will point you in the right direction. (See an APA format  examples here.)

Writing becomes so much more interesting when you love your topic, so try to find something within the assignment that speaks to you personally. You might even be able to find a subject that relates to STEM issues in some way.

Cut Out the Fluff

After forming our arguments, we STEM majors have a bad habit of making our sentences too complicated and fancy in attempt to woo our professors. Sound familiar?

It’s understandable that you want to show off your best writing skills, but the biggest giveaway of a novice writer is incorrectly used vocabulary. Even worse, some students stretch their sentences for miles without any extra benefit except reaching the dreaded word count requirement.

Even if your paper is a doozy of more than 15 pages, you still have to cut out the fluff. This means actively checking for lengthy or wordy sentences and avoiding passive voice at all costs. For example, instead of:

The revolution was caused by dissatisfied young people.

You’d write:

Dissatisfied young people sparked the revolution.

College professors in the humanities prefer active writing, which can be a hard shift for science students who are used to writing in the passive voice for lab reports. After you’ve written your draft, read it aloud. Listen for any instances of passive voice, and circle any words that you’re not quite sure you’re using properly. Then, cut out any unnecessary words and see just how concise you can make your writing. Your reader will almost certainly understand your argument better, even if you don’t feel like a budding Shakespeare.

Check Your Flow

The last consideration for a smooth academic papers is its flow, or how it transitions from claim to claim.

Ideally, your transitions will be smooth and the topics will be related in a logical way, but this can be hard to nail on the first try without prior planning. This is where outlining becomes very important. Make a flowchart using a phrase-long descriptor of each paragraph, and rearrange them until the order makes sense. This is a great practice for identifying the most appropriate order for your paper, whether that be chronological or something more unique.

The flow will guide your reader throughout your argument, and your topic sentences will serve as their roadmap. Make sure these beginnings of your paragraphs are straightforward and direct your reader with the flow, instead of making them stop to piece together your ideas.

Even if you plan to spend the rest of your life working with derivatives and antiderivatives, writing will still be integral to your career in some way. After all, you’ll probably want to let the world (or at least your coworkers) know about your knowledge or discoveries. The good thing is that there’s likely no need to drastically change or enhance your writing. Focusing on a solid argument, keeping things simple, and checking your flow is a great three-step plan to get you on track to success. And don’t be afraid to ask for help from your TA, a tutor, or your campus writing center.

So, fear not, and don’t short-circuit your assignment. It’ll all be worth it in the end.

Use Active Voice

Even seasoned writers confuse active and passive voice occasionally. The easiest way to remember how to use active voice (instead of passive voice) is to simply put the noun ahead of the verb.

Gas needs to be put in the car. (Passive voice)

The car needs gas. (Active voice)

The kitchen was cleaned by Molly. (Passive voice)

Molly cleaned the kitchen. (Active voice)

The pizza was devoured by the soccer team. (Passive voice)

The soccer team devoured the pizza. (Active voice)

The works cited page was formatted by Carl. (Passive voice)

Carl formatted MLA works cited  page. (Active voice)

If you remember to place the noun first and the verb second, you’re well on your way to implementing active voice in your writing. This small strategy works wonders.

Keep Sentences Short and Sweet

Longer sentences don’t equal better sentences. While longer sentences can be used effectively when developing your unique writing style and employing proper syntax, it’s simpler to use sentences that are short and sweet. Not only does this make it easier for your readers to process, but it lessens the chance of grammatical errors on your part.

Use Strong Adjectives

Now before we explain this, let us warn you not to go crazy with the thesaurus because trust us, your professor will know. However, challenging yourself to change an elementary adjective into a stronger, more powerful one will make a difference in your writing.

Cindy was hungry after the 4-mile hike. (Weak adjective)

Cindy was famished after the 4-mile hike. (Strong adjective)

Mrs. Mills laughed at how dirty her son’s clothes were after football practice. (Weak adjective)

Mrs. Mills laughed at how filthy her son’s clothes were after football practice. (Strong adjective)

Katie was happy that she received an A on her physics exam. (Weak adjective)

Katie was thrilled that she received an A on her physics exam. (Strong adjective)

Like we said, never go crazy with the thesaurus for fear of making your writing unreadable or awkward, but definitely challenge yourself to use stronger adjectives where appropriate.

Avoid Filler Words

Words like “really,” “very,” “little,” and “kind of” add nothing to your writing. In fact, using what we call fluff, filler, or qualifying words can actually make your writing weaker.

I was really exhausted.

Scrap that and say, “I was exhausted” instead.

Mark is kind of indifferent about our dinner plans.

Mark is indifferent about our dinner plans.

The teacher was a little surprised how many APA citations her student had.

The teacher was surprised how many APA citations her student had.

If you can take the filler word out of the sentence and it still makes perfect sense, it very well may be a filler word.

Read Your Writing Aloud

Reading your writing aloud remains one of the smallest (albeit most effective) tips we can offer, yet it has quite the impact. By reading your writing aloud, you’re more likely to catch grammatical issues, awkward syntax, and areas of your piece that can be improved.

Write Now…Edit Later

What’s most important is getting all of your important points and ideas down on paper and turning them into tangible work. You need not edit as you go; it’s best not to put the cart before the horse. After you have a draft, focus on editing. Avoid as many roadblocks as possible during the writing process and just get it done.

Reading More in General

Even hundreds of years later, books are still in fashion, whether that be digitally or as a hard copy. And no wonder books have lasted the test of time, there are awesome benefits to reading! First and foremost, reading allows you to build a stronger vocabulary. By picking up a book now and then, you’re likely to learn new words—along with the proper context with which to use them. Additionally, reading opens your eyes to different writing styles and strategies. Strong writers have strong voices, but there’s no set way to accomplish that. By reading work from many writers—and experimenting with your own work—you’ll find that you develop the language, syntax, and style skills to take your work to the next level.

British Academics Despair as ChatGPT-Written Essays Swamp Grading Season

‘It’s not a machine for cheating; it’s a machine for producing crap,’ says one professor infuriated by the rise of bland essays.

The increased prevalence of students using ChatGPT to write essays should prompt a rethink about whether current policies encouraging “ethical” use of artificial intelligence (AI) are working, scholars have argued.

With marking season in full flow, lecturers have taken to social media in large numbers to complain about AI-generated content found in submitted work.

Telltale signs of ChatGPT use, according to academics, include little-used words such as “delve” and “multifaceted,” summarizing key themes using bullet points and a jarring conversational style using terms such as, “Let’s explore this theme.”

In a more obvious giveaway, one professor said an advertisement for an AI essay company was  buried in a paper’s introduction ; another academic noted how a student had  forgotten to remove a chatbot statement  that the content was AI-generated.

“I had no idea how many would resort to it,” admitted  one U.K. law professor .

Des Fitzgerald, professor of medical humanities and social sciences at  University College Cork , told  Times Higher Education  that student use of AI had “gone totally mainstream” this year.

“Across a batch of essays, you do start to notice the tics of ChatGPT essays, which is partly about repetition of certain words or phrases, but is also just a kind of aura of machinic blandness that’s hard to describe to someone who hasn’t encountered it—an essay with no edges, that does nothing technically wrong or bad, but not much right or good, either,” said Professor Fitzgerald.

Since  ChatGPT’s emergence in late 2022 , some universities have adopted policies to allow the use of AI as long as it is acknowledged, while others have begun using AI content detectors, although  opinion is divided on their effectiveness .

According to the  latest Student Academic Experience Survey , for which Advance HE and the Higher Education Policy Institute polled around 10,000 U.K. undergraduates, 61 percent use AI at least a little each month, “in a way allowed by their institution,” while 31 percent do so every week.

Professor Fitzgerald said that although some colleagues “think we just need to live with this, even that we have a duty to teach students to use it well,” he was “totally against” the use of AI tools for essays.

“ChatGPT is completely antithetical to everything I think I’m doing as a teacher—working with students to engage with texts, thinking through ideas, learning to clarify and express complex thoughts, taking some risks with those thoughts, locating some kind of distinctive inner voice. ChatGPT is total poison for all of this, and we need to simply ban it,” he said.

Steve Fuller, professor of sociology at the  University of Warwick , agreed that AI use had “become more noticeable” this year despite his students signing contracts saying they would not use it to write essays.

He said he was not opposed to students using it “as long as what they produce sounds smart and on point, and the marker can’t recognize it as simply having been lifted from another source wholesale.”

Those who leaned heavily on the technology should expect a relatively low mark, even though they might pass, said Professor Fuller.

“Students routinely commit errors of fact, reasoning and grammar [without ChatGPT], yet if their text touches enough bases with the assignment, they’re likely to get somewhere in the low- to mid-60s. ChatGPT does a credible job at simulating such mediocrity, and that’s good enough for many of its student users,” he said.

Having to mark such mediocre essays partly generated by AI is, however, a growing complaint among academics. Posting on X,  Lancaster University  economist  Renaud Foucart  said marking AI-generated essays “takes much more time to assess [because] I need to concentrate much more to cut through the amount of seemingly logical statements that are actually full of emptiness.”

“My biggest issue [with AI] is less the moral issue about cheating but more what ChatGPT offers students,” Professor Fitzgerald added. “All it is capable of is [writing] bad essays made up of non-ideas and empty sentences. It’s not a machine for cheating; it’s a machine for producing crap.”

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Actions to Keep Families   Together

Since his first day in office, President Biden has called on Congress to secure our border and address our broken immigration system. As Congressional Republicans have continued to put partisan politics ahead of national security – twice voting against the toughest and fairest set of reforms in decades – the President and his Administration have taken actions to secure the border, including:

  • Implementing executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum when encounters are high;
  • Deploying record numbers of law enforcement personnel, infrastructure, and technology to the Southern border;
  • Seizing record amounts of fentanyl at our ports of entry;
  • Revoking the visas of CEOs and government officials outside the U.S. who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully; and
  • Expanding efforts to dismantle human smuggling networks and prosecuting individuals who violate immigration laws.

President Biden believes that securing the border is essential. He also believes in expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and that immigrants who have been in the United States for decades, paying taxes and contributing to their communities, are part of the social fabric of our country. The Day One immigration reform plan that the President sent to Congress reflects both the need for a secure border and protections for the long-term undocumented. While Congress has failed to act on these reforms, the Biden-Harris Administration has worked to strengthen our lawful immigration system. In addition to vigorously defending the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals) policy, the Administration has extended Affordable Care Act coverage to DACA recipients and streamlined, expanded, and instituted new reunification programs so that families can stay together while they complete the immigration process.  Still, there is more that we can do to bring peace of mind and stability to Americans living in mixed-status families as well as young people educated in this country, including Dreamers. That is why today, President Biden announced new actions for people who have been here many years to keep American families together and allow more young people to contribute to our economy.   Keeping American Families Together

  • Today, President Biden is announcing that the Department of Homeland Security will take action to ensure that U.S. citizens with noncitizen spouses and children can keep their families together.
  • This new process will help certain noncitizen spouses and children apply for lawful permanent residence – status that they are already eligible for – without leaving the country.
  • These actions will promote family unity and strengthen our economy, providing a significant benefit to the country and helping U.S. citizens and their noncitizen family members stay together.
  • In order to be eligible, noncitizens must – as of June 17, 2024 – have resided in the United States for 10 or more years and be legally married to a U.S. citizen, while satisfying all applicable legal requirements. On average, those who are eligible for this process have resided in the U.S. for 23 years.
  • Those who are approved after DHS’s case-by-case assessment of their application will be afforded a three-year period to apply for permanent residency. They will be allowed to remain with their families in the United States and be eligible for work authorization for up to three years. This will apply to all married couples who are eligible.
  • This action will protect approximately half a million spouses of U.S. citizens, and approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under the age of 21 whose parent is married to a U.S. citizen.

Easing the Visa Process for U.S. College Graduates, Including Dreamers

  • President Obama and then-Vice President Biden established the DACA policy to allow young people who were brought here as children to come out of the shadows and contribute to our country in significant ways. Twelve years later, DACA recipients who started as high school and college students are now building successful careers and establishing families of their own.
  • Today’s announcement will allow individuals, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers, who have earned a degree at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education in the United States, and who have received an offer of employment from a U.S. employer in a field related to their degree, to more quickly receive work visas.
  • Recognizing that it is in our national interest to ensure that individuals who are educated in the U.S. are able to use their skills and education to benefit our country, the Administration is taking action to facilitate the employment visa process for those who have graduated from college and have a high-skilled job offer, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers.

MultiSocial: Multilingual Benchmark of Machine-Generated Text Detection of Social-Media Texts

  • Macko, Dominik
  • Kopal, Jakub
  • Moro, Robert

Recent LLMs are able to generate high-quality multilingual texts, indistinguishable for humans from authentic human-written ones. Research in machine-generated text detection is however mostly focused on the English language and longer texts, such as news articles, scientific papers or student essays. Social-media texts are usually much shorter and often feature informal language, grammatical errors, or distinct linguistic items (e.g., emoticons, hashtags). There is a gap in studying the ability of existing methods in detection of such texts, reflected also in the lack of existing multilingual benchmark datasets. To fill this gap we propose the first multilingual (22 languages) and multi-platform (5 social media platforms) dataset for benchmarking machine-generated text detection in the social-media domain, called MultiSocial. It contains 472,097 texts, of which about 58k are human-written and approximately the same amount is generated by each of 7 multilingual LLMs. We use this benchmark to compare existing detection methods in zero-shot as well as fine-tuned form. Our results indicate that the fine-tuned detectors have no problem to be trained on social-media texts and that the platform selection for training matters.
