OR, how does the text relate to the identity of the ?
This summary is vague, so let's go in-depth on a couple of these concepts to really show you what you should be doing in the HLE.
Identity is what makes you, YOU. Here are some questions the concern your own personal identity:
Now apply this same logic to characters within your text.
Let's take a look at a concrete example of how we might choose evidence and quotes for a HLE on cultural identity. This example is based on a Vietnamese work in translation “Ru” by author Kim Thúy. For context, “Ru” is an autobiographical fictional account which explores Kim Thúy's move from Vietnam to Canada as an immigrant and her consequent struggles. The structure of her novel is largely lyrical and poetic.
Let's look at a section from her novel that may help us come up with an essay idea based on the concept of Identity. When she returns to Vietnam, she attends a restaurant, however this becomes a major awakening for her in terms of how she views her own personal identity. Kim narrates within her novel:
The first time I carried a briefcase, the first time I went to a restaurant school for young adults in Hanoi, wearing heels and a straight skirt, the waiter for my table didn't understand why I was speaking Vietnamese with him. Page 77, Rú
This is a perfect quote for the Identity concept. Can you see why? Let's think through it together…
Why would the waiter be confused if Kim, a “briefcase”-carrying individual in “heels” and a “straight skirt”, was speaking Vietnamese with him?
What does being “Vietnamese” look like to the waiter? Why does Kim not conform to his expectation? Was it perhaps due to what she was wearing?
Now, if we look at the section which follows this in the novel, we are able to see the impact this had on the character of Kim's sense of identity.
the young waiter reminded me that I couldn't have everything, that I no longer had the right to declare I was Vietnamese because I no longer had their fragility, their uncertainty, their fears. And he was right to remind me. Page 77, Rú
Here, we can clearly see that this character is now questioning her Vietnamese cultural identity. This is just one example that demonstrates the concept of Identity.
Culture seems to be this confusing thing. Does it have to do with religion? Race? Beliefs? What does it mean? Does the monster from Frankenstein fit into a certain culture?
The easiest way to put it is this: Culture is the way someone lives. It is their “way of life.” Think of it as an umbrella term. “Culture” can include so many different things; the list just goes on, for example religion, values, customs, beliefs, cuisine, etc.
Now think, how would I form an essay from this concept?
It seems odd writing an essay about “creativity” because… like… how can anyone definitively say what ‘counts' as being creative–or not? When I say the word creativity , I think of new inventions, or maybe those weird and wacky art installations living inside those ‘modern art' museums. But hey, what's creative to me might not be creative to you!
When formulating a HLE on the concept of creativity we have two main pointers for you. Look for:
Now, for this concept, let's look at how we might select supportive evidence and quotations for a HLE on creativity within the narrative style of author Mary Shelley in “Frankenstein”. The narrative style uses epistolary narration . This is a narrative technique in which a story is told through letters. This was something that I found both interesting and recurring within Frankenstein, which I believe worked to create a personal touch within the novel.
Additionally, Mary Shelley allows different characters to narrate Frankenstein during different volumes. Let's investigate this! I have written out different character profiles of the narrators below:
These 3 characters, each relate a part of the novel Frankenstein. This is an example of a creative authorial choice that allows us, as readers to explore different points of view within the text. This is just one example of a creative aspect of a text which you can analyze for your HLE.
Representation is all about how something is portrayed, conveyed, shown, described, illustrated, depicted . There are many different things that can be ‘represented' within a text, and it doesn't have to be tangible.
For instance, you can look at how a belief, idea or attitude is depicted within a text through different characters or devices.
Again, let's explore a concrete example to make things clear: this time the graphic novel “Persepolis”. We'll consider an HLE on how a text represents the impact of political turmoil on society .
Chapter 10 of “Persepolis” highlights societal changes occurring due to the Iranian Revolution. The panels below list the authorial choices relevant to the negative representation of political change in a society. When looking at the techniques highlighted in the slides below, think about how you feel when you look at the panels below. Can you sense a more positive or negative feeling?
Cool, but what do we do to turn all this into an actual HL essay? Here is a sample response. The introduction might begin like this:
In the captivating graphic novel “Persepolis,” the author Marjane Satrapi explores the social and political impacts of the Iranian revolution. In particular, Satrapi conveys a disapproving viewpoint on political turmoil within the text. Throughout the graphic novel, Satrapi carefully represents how social isolation, hypocrisy and confusion is experienced by a young girl living in Tehran, as a result of political turmoil. Example HLE Introduction
Then, in a body paragraph, on one of the key ideas mentioned above, we could analyze the different literary techniques. For example, Panel 1 is a great representation of the experience of confusion in the midst of political turmoil:
Marji is the younger girl pictured in the panels above. While her parents appear quite concerned by the news on the TV, she appears to not be in full comprehension of the cause for their distress. This is demonstrated by the visual imagery and dialogue, in panel 7, for instance, if you observe the facial expressions by each of the characters. Example of analysis in body paragraph
This is just a short example from one particular text. To help you unpack any text, try look for the following when analyzing chapter to chapter:
If you're having trouble picking your text and line of inquiry, then use this simple 20-minute process to brainstorm potential questions for your HLE:
Choosing a question with good scope is extremely important, and it's one of the biggest challenges in the HLE. Here's why:
So, to help you get the balance just right , here are three examples of HLE questions, specifically for the concept of Identity which we mentioned in the table above (by the way, the example is a made-up novel for illustration purposes).
There are many things that contribute to a 7 in your HLE and your IB English grade overall. But if we had to boil it down to one secret, one essential fact… then it'd have to be this: Get really good at analysis .

Assessment of tok, the game plan, execution of the gameplan, planning for tok essay, structure of tok essay, conclusions, bibliography.
Introduce your topic accurately and state your thesis statement for the essay carefully. A thesis statement is like a teaser to your entire essay wherein you define your key terms and introduce your interpretation of the question. Make sure that you do not reword the prescribed title in your thesis. Instead, it needs to, as the word says, INTRODUCE your readers to what your essay is about. A strong introduction allows the reader to deduce what knowledge question(s) you are trying to answer.
So, in a nutshell
How to write a TOK Essay?
To answer that, you must familiarise yourself with what a TOK Essay is about.
Before you start reading this article, Amanda has some excellent TOK tips for you!
Theory of Knowledge is one of the most meta subjects that IB offers. Despite its complexity, TOK helps in providing a base for holistic learning and allows students to have a multidisciplinary experience.
To understand TOK is to understand the essence of IB, a task that most people consider unattainable.
But not for you!
Thank your lucky stars who made you land on Nail IB. How exactly will Nail IB help you?
Well, nailing International Baccalaureate is something we will discuss later.
Let's focus on cracking your TOK essay, shall we?
TOK demonstrates how students can apply their knowledge with greater awareness and credibility .
Big words, huh?
Now that we know that we cannot just slide through the Theory of Knowledge, let's understand how we can conquer this battle all guns blazing.
ToK essay’s primary objective is to answer the why behind our studies.
It makes one aware of the real-life implications of their subjects. The students gain greater awareness of their personal and ideological assumptions and appreciate the diversity of different perspectives. It helps the students find their unique perception, a prerequisite for excelling in the IB TOK essays.
Before we dive into our gameplan, let’s overview the rules of the game.
There are two assessment tasks in the TOK: an essay and a presentation . While a presentation encourages students to explore a real-life situation through the lens of TOK, an essay is written on the basis of the various questions provided by the International Baccalaureate Organisation.
Now that we have unleashed the game, let’s move ahead towards the gameplan of acing both, your presentation and your essay.
One of the fundamental tasks of TOK is to examine different areas of knowledge and find out their similarities and differences.
The TOK essay requires the students to investigate two Areas of Knowledge (AOK) and two Ways of Knowing (WOK) . AOKs and WOKs are investigated via questions such as:
The aforementioned are Knowledge Questions which help combine the Areas of Knowledge and the Ways of Knowing that they are using. This eliminates the superficial way of learning and makes an individual sensitive to the nature of the information. Our acquisition of Knowledge can be broadly divided into Shared Knowledge and Personal Knowledge.
Shared knowledge: What WE know It is the product of more than one individual. Although individuals contribute to it, shared knowledge does not solely depend upon the contributions of a particular individual—there are possibilities for others to check and amend individual contributions and add to the body of knowledge that already exists.
Personal knowledge: What I know It is essentially dependent on the experiences of a particular individual. Also known as procedural knowledge, it is gained through experience, practice and personal involvement and is intimately bound up with the particular local circumstances of the individual such as biography, interests, values, and so on.
The best hack to ace TOK essay is to develop a habit of making connections between the construction of knowledge, its acquisition and its relevance in the real world.
After that one needs to develop an interest in understanding the difference between diversity and cultural perspectives and personal assumptions.
One also needs to critically reflect on their own beliefs and assumptions, leading to more thoughtful, responsible and purposeful lives.
Yes, this is what you signed up for. It may sound a little intimidating but once you get the hang of it you will be able to see the matrix and understand this beautiful world a little better.
Understand that to provide the best version of your writing, it will take you more than one or two drafts. First and foremost, you need to pick your essay topic diligently. Try to choose an essay topic that best interests you. The topic should also allow you to explore the Areas of Knowledge towards which you are naturally inclined. Here are a few sample questions:
a) 'Ways of knowing are a check on our instinctive judgments.' To what extend do you agree with this statement?
b) With reference to two areas of knowledge discuss the way in which shared knowledge can shape their personal knowledge.
c) How can we know if knowledge is produced more through 'Passive Observation' or 'Active-Experiment' within the Human and Natural-sciences under a Mathematical-Perspective?
d) "The whole point of knowledge is to produce both meaning and purpose in our personal lives". Assess the validity of this statement.
Great things take time. It took me more than a couple of weeks to finalize this TOK essay guide. It is completely okay if the first few drafts may not look pleasing or award-winning to you. You will require sharpening your perspective towards the topic each time you polish your draft. Your writing journey from a dull draft to a masterpiece will be a whole process that you will have to be patient with. Have faith in yourself and proceed stepwise.
You need to consider the opinions of others who have devoted hours of research and a lifetime of dedicated studying the topic that surrounds your writing. Unravelling the realms of your mind palace is so Sherlock but let’s not deny the fact that at times, Watson is the one whose expertise helps Sherlock through pretty difficult times. I mean even Batman needs a Robin. In support of my awesome sauce examples, the point I am trying to make is that finding support for our claims and counterclaims through research is a good thing .
Use real-life examples to support your claims and counterclaims. These examples need to be documented researched examples like studies, experiments, articles, presentations by well-known people, etc. Examples that stem from your diploma subjects are highly encouraged, but those will need to be supported by research as well.
It is suggested that you choose a title, stick to it, tackle it and not be afraid. Do not change your mind unless there is a good reason. Also, try choosing Areas of knowledge that you truly enjoy. You know slaying a known devil is much easier than an unknown one. Allot a TIMELINE to your essay. Start with creating an outline of your essay. This will help you to track your progress and accomplish your goals
You can use tools like Trello to organize your ideas and plan your TOK essay.
Areas of Knowledge (AOKs): TOK distinguishes between eight areas of knowledge. They are mathematics, the natural sciences, the human sciences, the arts, history, ethics, religious knowledge systems, and indigenous knowledge systems. It is suggested that students study and explore six of these eight.
Ways of knowing (WOKs): TOK identifies eight specific WOKs- language, sense perception, emotion, reason, imagination, faith, intuition, and memory. It is suggested that studying four of these eight in-depth would be appropriate. WOKs underlie the methodology of the areas of knowledge and provide a basis for personal knowledge.
Moving ahead, let us discuss the structure of your TOK essay.
Your essay will consist of 4 broad segregations
Before breaking down further on the pillars, keep the following in mind
The body can be mainly divided into 3 segments.
Body (1st Segment)
Body (2): Follow the above process for your second AOK.
Your conclusion section will make your essay come together. It is the glue that will make your essay stick together. Herein, you need to

Here is a practice question I have created:
Using real world examples, evaluate the effectiveness of contractionary monetary policy in reducing inflation (15 marks)
Here is a quick plan:
Contractionary monetary policy includes raising interest rates and reversing quantitative easing. Interest rates are the cost of borrowing and the reward from saving. Interest rates are currently rising in the UK in response to high inflation.
Higher interest rates are likely to reduce aggregate demand. Interest rates increased from 0.25% to 3% in the UK over 2022. Higher interest rates increase the reward for saving, increasing the incentive to save. So saving increases and consumption falls. Higher interest rates increase the cost of borrowing, so consumers who borrow e.g. with a mortgage face higher bills and so are more likely to cut consumption. As a result of higher borrowing costs, firms are less likely to borrow to invest, which reduces investment. As consumption and investment are components of aggregate demand (AD=C+I+G+X-M), AD falls and shifts left from AD to AD1. There could also be a negative multiplier effect, where a one off fall in AD leads to a further fall in AD and real GDP, as shown by the shift left in AD from AD1 to AD2. This is because, for example, reduced investment means reduced profits for other firms, who cut workers’ wages. Workers then go on to cut their own consumer spending, reducing the incomes for local shop owners and so on. This means real GDP falls from Y to Y2 and there is a decrease in the price level from PL to PL2. This is likely to reduce the rate of inflation.
But this depends on the importance of interest rate changes for consumption and investment decisions. For example most mortgages in the UK are fixed rate mortgages rather than variable rate mortgages, with 82% of mortgage borrowing on fixed rates in the UK. Those on fixed rate mortgages may face less of an immediate increase in mortgage borrowing costs as interest rates rise, as the rates are likely to have been fixed in advance of the rate rise. Though many fixed rate mortgages may be short term, so these fixed rate mortgages are likely to be renewed with updated rates, with most mortgages expected to be renewed before 2025. While some mortgage holders may be protected in the short run, higher interest rates are likely to have a significant effect through mortgage costs.
A higher interest rate, relative to rates in other economies, leads to a higher rate of return on assets or savings in the UK. This leads to hot money flows into the UK economy. To buy UK assets or to put money in a UK bank, international investors are likely to need to convert currency into pounds. This increases demand for the currency, which shifts right from D to D1 leading to an appreciation of the pound from P to P1. This makes exports more expensive and imports cheaper, reducing export demand and increasing import demand. Provided the Marshall-Lerner condition holds, that the PED of exports and the PED of imports sum to 1 or more, this will result in reduced net exports, leading to lower AD as net exports is a component of AD. This will cause reduced real GDP and reduced employment because demand for workers is derived from demand for goods and services. Employment is most likely to fall particularly in industries that export heavily, such as gold, cars, airplanes, pharmaceuticals and oil – these exports account for nearly 28% of UK exports.
But this depends on what happens to other interest rates around the world. At the same time, we have also seen rising interest rates in the US, as the Federal Reserve central bank also tries to control inflation. This means there may be less of a difference in the US and UK rates of return, reducing the likelihood of significant hot money flows to the UK as a result of higher interest rates. Indeed we have seen increased strength of the US dollar relative to the pound in September 2022, which may have resulted from hot money flows into the US. So higher interest rates in the UK are unlikely to have a significant positive effect on net exports.
Quantitative tightening is the reverse of quantitative easing. Quantitative tightening means the central bank, for example the Bank of England, sells government bonds (that it had previously purchased with digitally created money). This increases the supply of government bonds, reducing their price and increasing their quantity. Reducing the bond price raises interest rates on government bonds. Bondholders such as commercial banks now receive a higher return on holding bonds relative to giving out loans. This means banks buy more bonds, leaving reduced cash available for lending, and so commercial banks reduce the supply of loanable funds, reducing the amount of total investment in the economy. This will reduce aggregate demand and hence inflation. The total value of assets under the quantitative easing scheme in the U.K. reached £895 billion. The Bank of England plans to engage in quantitative tightening of about £80 billion in 2023.
But this depends on the position of the economy on the Keynesian LRAS. If the economy has high spare capacity, then the economy is on the horizontal part of the Keynesian LRAS curve. This means a shift left in AD leads to a significant fall in real GDP and little change in inflation. The Bank of England currently judges there is little spare capacity in November 2022 but over the medium term weak demand is likely to mean higher spare capacity. So in the medium term quantitative tightening may have less of an effect on reducing inflation.
Overall contractionary monetary policy is likely to reduce inflation, reduce real GDP and reduce employment. While the direction of the effects is mostly clear, the magnitude is less clear. The most important effect is through the mortgage market, which is likely to be larger in the medium term rather than the short run as consumers renew their fixed mortgages. The effects of contractionary monetary policy also depend on the stance of fiscal policy. If fiscal policy is expansionary, e.g. increased government spending without higher taxes, then this may negate the effect of contractionary monetary policy on inflation. As interest rates rise in the UK, fiscal policy was briefly expansionary with announcements of tax cuts and spending on the energy support scheme, yet the fiscal policy has become less expansionary under Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, with tax rises for example on middle and higher earners announced. This means monetary policy is likely to be more effective in reducing inflation.
This answer features detailed analysis, with use of graphs.
There are real world examples throughout. Here I have mainly focussed on the UK example. But you can tailor your answer to another country.
For data on the UK economy, I recommend two sources: Trading Economics and the Bank of England’s monetary policy reports .
There is also evaluation and a solid conclusion.
There are also some definitions of key terms where relevant.
This answer would likely score full marks or close to it.
How many words / how much time for a 15 mark question in ib economics paper 1.
The word count is somewhat arbitrary – it depends on how succinctly you can express ideas.
Given the time limits in the exam, most top 15 mark answers I observe reach a word count between 700 and 1100 words..
I recommend spending 45 minutes on the 15 mark question. I also recommend a quick plan in this time (just so you know the points, evaluation and example(s) you will use.
Note the timing and requirements may be different for questions in papers 2 and 3.
There are a few key steps for conclusions:
