IB 71 Review: Kudos to Vidyut Jammwal for recognising a story like this and breaking the clutter with a rare conviction and belief!
Bollywood can’t get enough of its favourite theme, patriotism. Over the decades, films based on India and Pakistan’s complicated political ties have been made galore. Now, their template may be extremely formulaic but weaving a story that makes a point without any kind of preaching and excessive chest-thumping is no cakewalk.
In 2017, Sankalp Reddy, who mononymously goes by Sankalp, made his directorial debut with the bilingual film, The Ghazi Attack. The submarine warfare film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu in 2018. It was an underwater tale of the courage and patriotism of the men aboard the Indian Submarine INS Karanj and was inspired by true events from the mysterious sinking of PNS Ghazi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Six years later, Sankalp returns to Bollywood with IB 71, a spy drama, inspired by true events, which is again set against a similar backdrop. Interestingly, he once again manages to achieve what very few filmmakers can – make a patriotic film without the slightest ounce of melodramatic patriotism.
IB 71 is based on the Ganga Hijack, infamously called ‘the hijack that never happened’ and uncovers India’s top secret mission conducted by the Intelligence Bureau that made us win the 1971 war. It revolves around Dev, an IB officer, who single-handedly prevents Pakistan from joining hands with China and attacking India and gaining control over its north-eastern frontier. He takes on the critical operation of carrying out a hijack by two young but ambitious Kashmiri boys from POK (Pak Occupied Kashmir) by risking the lives of about 30 Indian civilians aboard an aircraft and safely bringing them back to their homeland, thus manoeuvring a mission that gives out a message that Pakistan has initiated a terror act on India. He successfully does so within a span of just ten days.
Most of the film takes place in Kashmir and kudos to cinematographer Gnana Shekar VS – who has shot National Award winning films like Vedam (2010) and Kanche (2015) – for capturing the beauty of the state with aplomb. The pristine snow-covered lands and the misty Dal Lake are the beds for most of the action and they render an element of authenticity to the story. The use of greys, mundane browns and cloudy blues convey the mood and tone of IB 71 rather perfectly. Despite a trained martial artist like Vidyut at the centre of the narrative, the stunts are far and few and extremely realistic, and never do you feel that these sequences are forced just to glorify the life of a spy.
A crisp narrative further helps the film. Sankalp wastes no time and dives straight into the story right from the first frame. We aren’t given any sneak peek into Dev’s life and his back story and interestingly, it causes no deterrence in establishing his character and his sharp acumen. Much like The Ghazi Attack, there are no frills here. There are no song and dance sequences and definitely, no love story involved, which, needless to say, makes for a gush of fresh air. Sankalp defies every stereotype and formula and creates a narrative that is impressive and will hopefully, set a precedent for all the patriotic films that are in the making.
There’s no dearth of spy thrillers in Bollywood and more and more of them continue to be made. However, more often than not, these good-looking films have crossed the line of realism to make their protagonists appear larger-than-life. This is also where IB 71 stands out. It gives us a glimpse into the life of a regular spy, who isn’t afraid to revel in grime and grit to protect their motherland. And their job is everything else but glamorous and glitzy.
Vidyut plays Dev in the film, which we are told is dedicated to ‘all the Jammwalions’, with a lot of restraint and grit. For a film that’s bankrolled by him, he lets his co-stars take centre stage where needed without him taking over every frame and that deserves applause. Having said that, Dev might have made for an excellent character and story on paper but it doesn’t provide much scope for a performance. Having belted out a slew of slick actioners over the years, Vidyut turned over a new leaf with Khuda Haafiz: Chapter 2 – Agni Pariksha last year, which surprised many as it offered him the opportunity to put his acting chops on display. If you’ve expected him to carry on that streak, you might be disappointed. But brownie points to him for recognising a story like this and breaking the clutter with a rare conviction and belief!
Vishal Jethwa’s antagonist act in Mardaani 2 (2019) left many impressed. With IB 71, he returns to don the hat of the bad guy yet again. He plays Qasim Qureshi here, a madly driven Kashmiri obsessed with hijacking an airplane and putting the lives of many Indians civilians at risk only so that his imprisoned brothers can be released by the Indian government. His Qasim is unpredictable, erratic and volatile. It seems like an extension of his character from Mardaani 2 but we aren’t complaining because he, once again proves, his mettle with a choice that is out of the ordinary and extremely risky. Some of his scenes with Vidyut’s Dev are pure gold and even in an atmosphere of simmering political tension, you end up cracking up. Kudos to the writing for that!
Anupam Kher as IB Chief NS Awasthi and Dalip Tahil as Zulfikar Ali Bhutto don’t have much to do and hence, don’t leave an impact. Once again like The Ghazi Attack, the narrative is largely led by men with hardly any women in the picture, literally and metaphorically. There are a total of just four women, all of who appear in the background. But if realistic spy dramas fascinate you, go for IB 71. The makers might not have had the chance to make lofty promises through the promos but this is a little gem that might just surprise and impress you. It goes on to prove that a story told with honesty and conviction with no flash and froth will definitely leave a mark and an indelible one at that.

IB 71 REVIEW:
Some true events need to be told and heard and IB 71 is definitely one of them. Vidyut Jammwal and Anupam Kher starring IB 71 is a story of a true event that is worth knowing and here’s my honest review on this. When it comes to narrating a true story, you need to have the facts right and the evidence well-placed. Fortunately, I got to see all the right elements in this story with minor flaws. IB is Intelligence Bureau and 71 is the year when this mega incident took place.
Sankalp Reddy, the director of the movie, gives us the backstory of how Pakistani planned an attack on India. He then takes us through the incident with proper details. IB 71 is based on an operation by the spies who managed to lock the Indian air space while outsmarting the Pakistani establishments. They restricted their aeroplanes from flying over India, leading to the Nation’s victory in the 1971 war. Sankalp narrates a story that leaves an impact.
The first half of the film is slow as it takes you through the start of the story. However, it’s the second half of the film that picks up the pace and the story. You feel the rush and the anticipation to know what will happen next. When it’s a movie about RAW agents or IB agents, you just want that India should win it regardless of any circumstances. You feel the rush in you when there’s an intense scene or when you know they are going to blow their cover. A similar thing happened to me when I watched the movie.
Set in 1970, a two-front war between Indian intelligence agencies and the Pakistani establishment. After learning that Pakistan was preparing a war against India in 10 days, the agents in IB quickly made a plan even though they were not ready to strike. However, the agents of IB ensured to defeat them with smartness and not with might. Putting their lives at risk, the agents complete the task and blocked the air space with their intelligence.

Highlights of IB 71:
Cinematography : Sankalp shows us beautiful locations of Kashmir and Lahore. The drone shots or the long shots of the place look majestic onscreen. There was one boat scene in the movie that was very well shot and executed.
Costumes : Sometimes half the movie looks pleasing when the makers keep apt costumes to period drama or historic movies. Since the movie is set in the 1970s, Sankalp showcases a good range on vintage collections. It looks perfect with the theme of the movie.
Background score : The background music of the movie adds more value and that’s what has happened with IB 71 as well. Given the fact the movie is intense, the thrilling music enhances the intensity of the scene. It gives you an adrenaline rush.
Drawbacks of IB 71:
The storyline : Given the fact IB 71 is a true story, in some places, it felt like it was made up. Don’t want to give spoilers but there are scenes that don’t seem real. However, it also raises a few questions regarding airport security, entering and leaving Pakistan like it’s no big deal when in real life it was.
Timelines : In the first half of the movie, the timeline seems a little confusing to me.
Star performance:
Vidyut Jammwal, the star of the film looks quite promising. The actor plays the role of Dev, an agent from the Intelligence Bureau. He is intelligent and always alert. Vidyut as an agent looks classy and dapper. However, speaking about his performance, he looks convincing as an agent but needs a little flow in dialogue delivery.
Anupam Kher needs no introduction as he plays his part perfectly well. He essays the role of the Chief of the Intelligence Bureau. He knows his part way too well and does it with ease.
Talking about Vishal Jethwa, he plays the role of an activist or a revolutionist who has only one aim. He can go to any extent just to get it. Vishal’s performance as Qasim Qureshi looks just as same as what I saw in Mardaani 2. Yes, he is young and I know he has potential but didn’t impress me this time.
On the other hand, Ashwath Bhatt often plays grey characters and he aces in his department. Dalip Tahil also makes a cameo. He plays Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who was the Former President of Pakistan and his talent seems to be a total waste in the movie.
Conclusion:
Overall, IB 71 is a decent film to watch. The film keeps you hooked. However, the second half of the film keeps you on the edge of your seat. Vidyut Jamwal delivers a promising role and a watchable movie.

IB 71 Reviews
Even by low standards of how ridiculous action movies can be, IB 71 mishandles its depiction of real-life espionage events in 1971. If you believe this movie, then you have to believe one IB agent has a superhero level of fight skills and defense plans.

IB 71 movie review: Vidyut Jammwal steps out of his comfort zone only to leave us confused
Ib 71 movie review: vidyut jammwal breaks out of his action hero shell to play a spy in this sankalp reddy film..
An espionage thriller, IB 71 chronicles India’s top-secret mission that is said to have aided India’s victory in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Starring Vidyut Jammwal and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles, the film starts off on a high note, but soon goes off track. With visuals, voice over, text captions and flashbacks, there’s a lot happening for one to understand the exact timeline of the film. Until the interval, I genuinely couldn’t figure what the film was trying to show or say. Directed by Sankalp Reddy, IB 71 in the first half, seemed nothing but an attempt to take us on a ride, play some riddles and leave us all confused without any answers. But thankfully, the second half picks up, pieces of puzzles start to come together and it all made some sense. Was it too little, too late? Somewhat, yes.
IB 71 starts with Pakistan preparing for yet another war after being defeated in 1948 and 1965, and this time from the Eastern front in alliance with China. Upon receiving vital information about this impending attack, Intelligence Bureau Chief Avasti (Kher), along with his top agent Dev (Jammwal), comes up with a plan to save the nation without firing a single bullet or letting the neighbouring country get the slightest hint about it. As mobilizing the army at a short notice appears to be a tough task, they suggest blocking of the air space to prevent Pakistan and China from attacking India. Dev is assigned this task and how he accomplishes this confidential mission in the next 10 days, along with 30 other undercover agents is what the film shows in the second half.
Crisp editing makes for an easier watch
With a runtime of a little less than two hours, the film is tightly edited and that length, perhaps, is the only good part about it. The story doesn’t seem drag, stays to the point and ends before it turns into a snooze fest. Reddy, who has earlier helmed Ghazi Attack, has the intent right behind telling this untold story based on true events, but somewhere he loses focus and goes all over the place.
Aditya Shastri’s story is intriguing and holds a lot of potential to keep you hooked. What doesn’t really work is the screenplay for which six people are credited -- Sankalp Reddy, Arjun Varma, E. Vasudeva Reddy, Arun Bhimavarapu, Gargee Singh and Abhimanyu Srivastava. For the longest time, they looked like disjoined and scattered pieces of a puzzle. Even when the story is picking pace, there is very little or no connect with how it unfolds for audiences to understand. The background music gets a bit too loud at places, though cinematography in certain scenes elevates the whole experience, especially the ones involving the plane.
What left me utterly surprised, and somewhat impressed, is that despite being based on such a sensitive and serious subject, there is quite a lot of subtle humour peppered across the film. I mean, it’s not common to see people laughing out loud while watching spy thrillers, but some one-liners and punches make it hard to control that laughter. Full credit goes to dialogues by Junaid Wasi and Sahar Quaze.
Vidyut Jammwal leaves you confused
Jammwal delivers a decent performance and he looks quite unlike his earlier big screen outings. You are used to seeing an actor do high-octane and gravity-defying action on screen, and suddenly he underplays all that and turns into a one-dimensional character that has nothing larger-than-life about himself, it can leave many confused. As an IB agent, his body language and mannerisms are on-point and he aces the few hand combat scenes that are there in the film. Kher delivers a restrained performance where he steps back and let the story be in forefront. As the chief of intelligence bureau, he commands authority and a strong screen presence, and that very well comes out in the scenes we see him in. Yes, it’s for very limited time Kher appears in the film, but then the story is more about the mission and less about the people behind it. Vishal Jethwa as Qasim Qureshi, a brainwashed youth, is in his element. He may not be as impressive as he was in his debut outing Mardaani 2, or as convincing as his last, Salaam Venky, yet he manages to make his presence felt, and trigger a few laughs with the way his character has been written.
Watch IB 71 in theatres to witness yet another untold story of heroes who seldom get spoken or written about in history books. It may not give you an adrenaline rush but will give some goosebumps towards the climax that is high on patriotic flavour.

IB 71 Movie Review: Vidyut Jammwal's film lands despite rough weather, Vishal Jethwa steals the show
Vidyut jammwal's ib 71, which is based on true events, is an account of what happened during the indo-pak war of 1971. with a sluggish first half, followed by a thrilling second half, the film is a decent thriller, says our review..

- Vidyut Jammwal turns spy for IB 71.
- He has also produced the film.
- It releases in theatres on May 12.
Cast & Crew
Vidyut Jamwal
Release Date: 12 May, 2023
Vidyut Jammwal is out there to prove his mettle. While he does not want to completely do away with his action hero image, he wants to also show his acting prowess. All his recent releases - be it Khuda Hafeez or Sanak or the latest IB 71, he does have action sequences but those are not the scene-stealers. This time, Vidyut not just acted but also bankrolled the project . But, is this spy-thriller just as taut as it promised to be, or does it falter? Let’s find out.
Dev (Vidyut Jammwal) is introduced as the flawless spy at the very onset of the film. He has a critical mission and while his face gives away fear, he oozes confidence in front of the enemy, thereby succeeding in it smoothly! However, the information revealed is frightening - Pakistan is planning an attack in 10 days and something drastic has to be done to prepare everyone for the war. This can’t be done in such short time, so he and Anupam Kher’s character have to devise a plan. They do have one, but it is extremely risky. A failure would not just mean over 30 lives being risked, but an impending war and bad image for the nation. Will Dev succeed in yet another critical mission where the stakes are so high? If he does, how will he achieve the feat? That’s the crux of the story.
The major fault in IB 71 is the slow first half, coupled with cringe dialogues. One that stayed with me is ‘ meri biwi pet se hai par khayal mere pet ka rakhti hai ’ (my wife is pregnant but takes care of what I eat). The spying continues for too long, breaking the pace. It gets painstakingly slow at points and even when Vidyut is out to fight, one might not feel a similar thrill like they always do.
See the trailer here :
However, it is the second half that redeems everything. It gets interesting and keeps us hooked. It is the second half where the action really begins, not literally. And by the end, thanks to the chest-thumping music meant to rouse your nationalism, you would not feel that bad.
Vidyut Jammwal is good with his performance. There are several sequences where he could have been better, but the character demands that he shows minimal emotions. When there is Vidyut, you expect action and he will give the audience just enough without overdoing it. Vidyut shoulders the film alone and takes up the entire screen time.
However, the show-stealer here is Vishal Jethwa. He might have limited screen space, but he simply excels in whatever he has been asked to do. Despite the over orange lipstick and cheek tint he is often given, he nails his role. From showing anger, fear or determination - he is good at all of it. He is severely underutilised and we hope we get to see him more.
Anupam Kher has what can be called an extended cameo . There is not much that he has to do and he does it effortlessly.
Director Sankalp, who had earlier worked in The Ghazi Attack, often loses control of the screenplay. His script could have been tauter and smoother. His hold on the reign is loose in the first half, which drowns the overall effect.
IB 71 Review: A Riveting and Authentic Tale of Indian Intelligence

In "IB 71," Indian Intelligence faces an unexpected revelation as both Pakistan and China pose significant threats to India, indicating potential attacks. To avert this imminent danger, IB agent Dev Jammwal devises a strategic plan to safeguard the nation by closing off Indian airspace, leading to a gripping and action-packed narrative.
"IB 71" stands out among recent films showcasing the prowess of Indian Intelligence, offering a riveting plot inspired by real events. Set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, the film delves into the prelude to the conflict when East Pakistan transformed into Bangladesh. The narrative unfolds with the intensity of a Hollywood thriller, maintaining focus on the core plot and delivering a captivating cinematic experience.
The film commences with the character of Dev Jammwal, played by Vidyut Jammwal, an intelligence officer who receives critical information about impending attacks. With a limited timeframe, Dev proposes an audacious plan involving the hijacking of an Indian plane to implement an airspace blockade. The film is commendable for its decision to forego unnecessary songs, allowing the plot to maintain its momentum. The daring exploits depicted exude authenticity, creating a magnificent backdrop of India in 1971.
Vidyut Jammwal delivers a controlled and sincere performance, showcasing his acting skills along with two action sequences. Anupam Kher excels in his role as Dev's superior, while Vishal Jethwa shines as Qasim, a restless Kashmiri separatist. Sankalp Reddy's direction is crisp and focused, offering an engaging watch that sheds light on a remarkable chapter in history.
Despite its strengths, the film is critiqued for its overpowering background score, which becomes jarring at times. A more restrained approach to the music could have heightened the overall impact. With a runtime of nearly two hours, "IB 71" maintains a captivating screenplay, making it a must-watch for those with an affinity for period action thrillers.
In conclusion, "IB 71" successfully portrays an authentic tale of Indian Intelligence, instilling pride in its remarkable exploits. The film's focus on a lesser-known chapter of history and its engaging narrative make it a compelling cinematic experience.

IB 71 starring Anupam Kher and Vidyut Jammwal is based on an untold story of Indian Airlines hijacking in the year 1971 before the Bangladesh Liberation War in December 71. Ganga was an old aircraft in the Indian Airlines fleet, already withdrawn from service but was re-inducted just days before the hijacking. The film highlights the role of IB (Intelligence Bureau) in the months leading to 1971 War and how behind the scenes work of IB agents contributed to India's win in the liberation of Bangladesh. A must watch to understand the contribution of our men and women from the Intelligence community.

IB71 movie review: A Vidyut Jammwal film where he doesn’t get to physically pummel the enemy
Ib71 movie review: this vidyut jammwal film claims to have been cobbled together from actual events, but the execution is both simplistic-comic-book and convoluted..
Wars are won not just by the valour of those who fight the ground, but also by crafty intelligence agents. It is 1971, and the Indo-Pak war is looming. How best to stymie the dastards in Pakistan who are busy reaching out to their counterparts in China? Simple, declares superspy Dev (Vidyut Jammwal), just block the Indian airspace, and promptly gets down to doing just that.
IB71 claims to have been cobbled together from actual events, but the execution is both simplistic-comic-book and convoluted. Two Kashmir sympathisers, played by Vishal Jethwa and Ashwath Bhatt, are steered towards a clunky hijacking: an old plane is given a lick of paint, a bunch of primed spooks, led by the doughty Dev, are on it, and our two thickly-accented Kashmiri gents are given a chance to wave a pistol and demand that the pilots land in Rawalpindi. No can do, low on fuel, the pilots say, so Lahore it is.
Watch IB71 trailer:
Back in the war-room, senior intelligence officer Awasthi ( Anupam Kher ) and his team is working in tandem with our brave spies, who not only get to have a splendid Lahori meal, and given bunks in a stately hotel, but also manage to trump the Pakistani establishment good and proper. Just to keep things going, President Bhutto (Dilip Tahil) shows up, makes a few comments, and disappears. Rolling your eyes seems to be the only acceptable response.
Jammwal, who does oversee a couple of high-speed chases down the Dal, doesn’t get to physically pulp the enemy. What’s the point of a Jammwal flick then? I protest.

IB71 Movie Review: Vidyut Jammwal’s Spy Thriller is an Unwitting Parody
Director: Sankalp Reddy
Writers: Sahar Quaze, Sankalp Reddy, Vasudev Reddy, Arjun Varma, Aditya Shastri, Junaid Wasi, Abhimanyu Srivastava
Cast: Vidyut Jammwal, Anupam Kher, Vishal Jethwa
If Pakistan is the enemy in an Indian spy thriller these days, you can be sure of a few base themes. One, every Pakistani behaves like a live-action Looney Tunes character. In the opening scene of IB71 , one of them is singing; another is snoring; the third is scowling. Two, their Urdu is a parody of Urdu: “Janaab” and “Tashreef” at the beginning of every sentence usually does the trick. Three, they always need to be taught a lesson; Hindi historical dramas, in particular, love teaching lessons. Whether the student countries need to learn or not is another matter. Four, each of them is a different sort of idiot. In this film, an ‘Azad Kashmir’ radical, played by Vishal Jethwa ( Mardaani 2 , 2019), hijacks an airplane dressed as a defunct 1920s Manhattan gangster in a hat and pinstripe suit. And five…actually, it doesn’t matter. You get the gist. Islamophobia and jingoism are the starting points. They’re too tacky to be offensive. They’re also – in fortunate cases like this one – not the movie’s biggest flaw.
IB71 is presented as “an untold story based on true events”. The film claims to be about a top-secret mission that’s been classified for more than 50 years. Vidyut Jammwal stars as Dev Jammwal, a muscular and intelligent Intelligence Bureau (IB) agent who comes up with a plan to stop Pakistan from attacking India before the 1971 war. It’s not an easy plan to describe, but here goes. Stay with me. Don’t get lost. Hold my hand if you like. So the IB discovers that Pakistan is in cahoots with China to blindside India from the East. They (or, as the voiceover insists, “We”) have 10 days to stop the West Pakistan jets from flying to the East Pakistan military base with the required weapons. Dev, the genius that he is, does some next-level reverse thinking. He proposes that India shuts down its airspace to prevent those West Pakistan planes from reaching the east, which in turn will foil the impending attack. Once he realizes that only an act of war can merit the closing of an airspace, Dev works even further backward. He in turn proposes to fake a hijacking of an Indian commercial plane – by letting real Azad Kashmir militants take control of a fake flight with 30 IB agents posing as scared civilians.
We’re not done. Hang on. Because the hijacking has to be of a specific type to ‘qualify’ as an act of war. For this, the plane must land in Pakistan and the passengers have to be safely transported back to India. Then, and only then, can India legally close its airspace (I bet you forgot this was the goal by now). The plotting and staging make up the first half of the film. The agents’ efforts to outwit Lahore officials and reach the Indian border form the second half of the film. The plan is so painfully elaborate that, when Dev initially narrates it to the IB chief (Anupam Kher), even the script gives up and lets music drown out Dev’s narration. Once his lips stop moving, we hear Kher respond with a curt “The execution will be difficult”. Dev promptly cites the examples of Lord Ram, Maharana Pratap and Guru Gobind Singh to prove that impossible is nothing. He’s right, though, because he is introduced in a scene where he simply walks into a Pakistani military camp disguised as a General, scolds an officer for singing Bollywood classics (“How will you hate India then?” he projects), fools a superior and walks out without going Rambo on a soul.
If it isn’t evident yet, IB71 is very much inspired by Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning Argo (2012). The template is the same: Declassified mission, ridiculous plan, heroic extraction agent, pensive boss hovering over the phone at the bureau, last-ditch escape, egg on Islamic nation’s faces. But there’s one crucial difference. The film-making of Argo made the true story sound smart and audacious and funny. The film-making of IB71 makes the true story look silly and confusing and far-fetched. Let’s leave aside the cringey Pakistani caricatures for a beat. The Vishal Jethwa character, for instance, seems to be stuck in a parallel Dhamaal (2011) sequel. He’s so hammy that you almost expect Vijay Raaz to turn up as the cucumber-cool Air Traffic Controller. Then there’s the flight itself – the passengers swerve from side to side in the plane as if they were on an AC Sleeper bus to Goa.
The Kashmir sequences in the first half are visually striking, but I couldn’t get over how the radicals didn’t realize they were being followed by an imposing figure like Vidyut Jammwal – in the snow, no less. Nobody is as subtle or discreet as they think they are. When undercover cops communicate with each other through darting eyes and hand gestures at the Dal lake, they look like football managers attempting to signal a play to an aloof midfielder. When two radicals meet during a matinee show of Arzoo (1965) to discuss their master plan, the dubbing makes it sound like they want the entire cinema hall – including the not-so-undercover IB agents – to hear them. Apparently, they’re whispering. When a half-clever moment reveals that a male IB officer is answering ‘family’ phone calls from Lahore in fake voices, he ruins it by mimicking wives and mothers too. (“Quit when you’re ahead!” I screamed, in my most masculine voice). The only two female agents in the film make grave mistakes: One allows a Bengali civilian onto the pretend-flight, the other is stabbed at a hotel.
When the Indians are on the verge of being exposed, a late-night power cut comes to the rescue. At the end of the mission, we see Dev striding triumphantly in slow-motion in the pouring rain towards the border. The film concludes with an epilogue about Pakistan losing the war and failing to break India into parts (“Instead we broke them into two parts: Pakistan and Bangladesh, thus saving millions of lives”). When it cuts back to the hero, Dev is still striding in the rain. He looks pleased. Seasons change, India becomes a superpower, Novak Djokovic retires, AI ends sport, the cure to cancer arrives, climate change resurrect dinosaurs, a meteor strikes, Adam ghosts Eve, the internet is invented before the wheel, fiction ceases to exist, borders perish, movies return, I’m reborn and Christopher Nolan starts to direct the planet. But Dev is still striding in the rain in IB71 .

IB71, a Hindi-language spy thriller released in 2023, revolves around the 1971 Indian Airlines hijacking. The film, penned and directed by Sankalp Reddy, features Vidyut Jammwal, Vishal Jethwa, and Faizan Khan in prominent roles. Notably, it marks Jammwal’s debut as a producer. The movie, which also stars Anupam Kher, Ashwath Bhatt, Danny Sura, and Suvrat Joshi, received acclaim upon its release on May 12, 2023.
In 1971, the Indian Intelligence Bureau receives crucial intel about imminent attacks on India by Pakistan and China within 10 days. Facing time and resource constraints, IB agent Dev Jammwal proposes to his superior N.S. Avasti that the most viable strategy to thwart this threat is to impose an airspace blockade. This involves restricting Indian airspace access to Pakistan and fabricating a violation of the Tashkent Agreement. The plan entails orchestrating the hijacking of an Indian plane by Kashmiri separatists, ensuring it lands in Pakistani territory. Initially dismissed as implausible by the government, they eventually recognize its potential and agree to execute the well-structured operation. However, complications arise when the entire team of passengers, comprised of intelligence officers, find themselves in a Lahore hotel. Unforeseen circumstances unfold, deviating from the original plan.
Abhishek Srivastava from The Times of India awarded a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars, expressing, “IB71 proves to be a captivating viewing experience, shedding light on a remarkable chapter of history and fostering pride in our intelligence network. With a runtime of nearly two hours, the film maintains a screenplay that holds the audience’s attention throughout, ensuring there are no dull moments.” Shaheen Irani of OTTplay also gave it a 3.5 out of 5 stars, stating, “IB71 is a good choice for an enjoyable weekend watch. While not the absolute best film, it will, for the most part, leave you with a smile.”

Sankalps direction is weak. He has simply not been able to recreate the excitement, anxiety and thrill of the real-life drama €” neither in the script (co-written by him) nor in the narration nor even in the performances of the actors. On the whole, IB 71 is a dull fare and, therefore, will go quite unnoticed at the box-office.

Ratings: 2.5/5 Review By: Saibal Site: NDTV
IB71 leaves one with the nagging feeling that it could have been a much better film has the writing been a less of the by-the-numbers kind. But even as a middling spy drama, it is not without its moments.
Ratings: 2.5/5 Review By: Zinia Site: India Today
Director Sankalp, who had earlier worked in The Ghazi Attack, often loses control of the screenplay. His script could have been tauter and smoother. His hold on the reign is loose in the first half, which drowns the overall effect.
Ratings: 3/5 Review By: Simran Site:DNA
But there are shortcomings too. One of the significant drawbacks of this film is the sluggish first half. You might lose interest in between and find it too slow for a spy thriller. The movie also lacks suspense factor and isn’t at par with thrillers like Madras Cafe, Baby, or Raazi. You don’t feel the adrenaline rush in the pivotal moments. Still, the movie is a decent thriller.
Ratings: 2/5 Review By: Kusumika Site: Zoom TV
In the end, this abysmal espionage movie fails to deliver any semblance of intrigue, suspense, or entertainment. It serves as a painful reminder of what can happen when lazy writing, uninspired acting, and amateurish direction collide, leaving the audience longing for their wasted time and hoping for a swift end to this cinematic catastrophe.
Ratings: 3/5 Review By: Saheli Site:Bollywood Bubble
Overall, IB 71 is a decent film to watch. The film keeps you hooked. However, the second half of the film keeps you on the edge of your seat. Vidyut Jamwal delivers a promising role and a watchable movie.
Ratings: 2.25/5 Review By: Vinamra Site:Firstpost
But when a film ends up being both predictable and pedestrian, theres a problem. Vidyut Jammwal and Anupam Khers IB71 is unfortunately one such film. Here, we have a bunch of stern faces mouthing Janaab after every line, the same issue that bogged down Mission Majnu this year. The end credits are accompanied by a voiceover of Jammwal, what we read is also what we hear. As I said, the man has chosen words this time.
Ratings: 3.5/5 Review By: Ronak Site: Times of India
€œIB 71€ is an engaging watch that sheds light on a remarkable chapter of history, instilling a sense of pride in our intelligence network. With a runtime of nearly two hours, the film maintains a screenplay that keeps the audience captivated throughout, ensuring there is never a dull moment. If you have an affinity for period action thrillers, this film successfully checks the boxes.
