Summer Writing Prompts: 100 Ideas to Write All Summer Long

Summer is the perfect time and season to practice writing and let it feel more like play than work. Today, I've collected a list of summer writing prompts: enough to write one per day of the season! 

A few summers ago, I led summer writing camps for kids called Write Camp. It was a blast helping kids of all ages get their fantastical ideas down on paper. My sister signed up my nephew, even though he was a reluctant third grade writer at the time. She wasn't sure he'd even participate.

I assured her that the no-pressure, fun environment would help him imagine writing in a new way, and that he would finish the summer with a story or two and a new understanding of writing.

I'm happy to report I was right! He and his fellow write campers all finished stories and left feeling more confident in their writing skills. 

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to get students to write correctly that we drain all the fun out of it. We forget that the first step to becoming a strong writer is to actually write. Try these summer writing prompts to help you (or a young writer in your life!) have some writing fun.

Summer journal prompts

If you keep a journal like me, try one of these prompts for some quick summer journaling. 

1. Describe the perfect summer day from beginning to end. What activities would you engage in and why?

2. Write about a memorable vacation or summer road trip. What made it special and why do you still remember it?

3. Share your favorite summer recipe. Include the ingredients and step-by-step instructions. How does it remind you of summer?

4. Write about a summer adventure you would like to experience. It could be something daring or out of your comfort zone. Why does it intrigue you?

5. Describe a summer tradition or ritual that you and your family or friends have. What makes it meaningful and how does it enhance your summer experience?

6. Write about a time when you felt completely relaxed during the summer.

7. Share your favorite summer read or book recommendation.

8. Write about a summer hobby or activity that brings you joy. How did you discover this hobby, and how does it make your summer more fulfilling?

9. Describe a summer sunset or sunrise that left a lasting impression on you. What were the colors like, and how did the scene make you feel?

10. Write about a summer project or goal you have set for yourself. How do you plan to accomplish it, and what impact do you hope it will have on your summer?

11. Share a list of your favorite summer songs or a summer playlist. Why do these songs resonate with you, and how do they enhance your summer vibe?

12. Write about a summer friendship that has played a significant role in your life. How did you meet, and what makes this friendship special?

Summer travel prompts

Summer setting prompts

While some of these overlap with other prompts, use these to practice sensory details and setting.

37. Paint a vivid picture of a vibrant summer sunset, capturing the hues of orange, pink, and purple that streak across the sky.

38. Describe the refreshing sensation of jumping into a crystal-clear pool or lake on a scorching summer day, highlighting the coolness against your skin.

39. Depict the sights, sounds, and scents of a bustling farmers' market in the summertime, with rows of colorful fruits and vegetables, the chatter of vendors, and the aroma of freshly baked goods.

40. Portray the atmosphere of a lively summer festival, showcasing the lively music, energetic crowds, and a kaleidoscope of vibrant decorations and food stalls.

Childhood summer prompts

48. Describe a fun summer activity you did with your friends (or family) when you were younger. What did you do, and how did it strengthen your bond?

49. Write about the excitement and anticipation you felt as summer vacation approached each year. What were some of the activities you looked forward to the most?

50. Recall a summer camp experience from your childhood. Describe the camp setting, the activities you participated in, and the friendships you formed.

51. Write about a summer tradition that was unique to your family when you were a child. What made it special, and how did it create lasting memories?

52. Describe a magical summer night from your childhood. Were there fireflies lighting up the sky or a mesmerizing display of stars? How did it make you feel?

53. Recall a day of summer when you discovered something new and exciting, whether it was a hidden spot in your neighborhood or a fascinating creature in nature. Describe the moment of discovery.

54. Write about a summer project or hobby you pursued as a child. How did it ignite your creativity?

55. Describe a favorite summer treat from your childhood, whether it was a refreshing ice cream flavor or a homemade dessert.

For this final set of summer writing prompts, I challenge you to make a quick list on each prompt and see what ideas emerge.

87. Outline the most essential qualities needed for a summer camp counselor. (Consider how this might be different if kids made the list? HA!)

94. Best or worst things to ride/ eat/ play at an amusement park or state fair. 

95. Favorite summer swimming holes.

96. List your top ten songs about summer. (Put on a few for inspiration!)

97. Favorite summer snack foods for road trips. 

98. Summer holidays ranked. (Challenge level: look up the summer holidays in a different country!)

99. List the ten essential components of a dream summer break.

100. Ten must-see hikes or waterfalls or parks in your area—perfect for a summer outing!

These summer writing prompts are appropriate for all ages…

Because I know a lot of teachers are looking forward to the summer…along with a lot of students, and a lot of writers. In my mind, the season inspires a lot of good creative writing topics, and it wasn’t hard to come up with this list!

I love summer back in the midwest, because of the fireflies (although in southern Indiana they are called “lightning bugs.”)

I used to catch them and put them in a jar with holes poked in the lids to keep by my bed overnight. They inevitably would crawl out somehow, and I’d wake up to find flashing bugs crawling around on my walls and ceiling.

Mean kids would pull the them in half and draw glowing pictures or words on the front of their shirts. This always upset me and caused me a great deal of stress and outrage.

I also remember how at the hay farms, the fields would have an unearthly, flickering glow at night from all the fireflies hiding in the tall hay before it was harvested.

Fireflies and the loud buzz of cicadas = summer nights for me. 🙂

I was trying to catch some last night! Just for a picture. It’s not as easy as I remembered 😀

Someone told me that when she was a kid, they used to dig out the glowy bits and smear them around… I was horrified!

I love the fireflies. 🙂

These are great! I think I will use them with my students this year also.

Your first few suggestions brought back a family memory of when my daughter Katie was a new driver as we were on a family trip.

Her stress level when she felt pressured driving 55 mph through road construction on the freeway with the yard-high orange barrels on her left and a semi-truck moving on her right became amplified when a wasp flew in her window and landed on the front of her shirt. Katie’s loud and continuous screaming while she tried to flick off the wasp and keep control of the car prompted her older sister in the back seat to use an empty pop bottle to bonk Katie on the back of the head several times in an attempt to quiet Katie down.

That action required Katie to then alternate between trying to blindly brush off the wasp and grab the bottle as it attacked her head. The rest of us couldn’t stop laughing at her misfortune. There was nothing we could do during that 2-minute portion of the drive, except when I asked the bottle bopping to end.

Katie pulled over to the side if the road when the construction area ended, and immediately exited the car to shake herself off with more screams plus scoldng her sister for threatening our safely with her annoying action.

That was one of our most memorable family events.

Essay on Summer Camp: Summer camp is a closely supervised programme, and a special camp organised during the summer season offered for children and young teenagers. Summer camps are optimum as students can make wise use of their holidays trying new adventures to improve their indulgence in extracurricular activities away from home in a safe environment.

A summer camp includes a broad range of activities like hiking, music, camping, literature, dance, programming, sports, language learning, and a lot more. Many college applicants have had summer camp experiences. In this Common Application essay, Max discusses his challenging relationship with a difficult student who ends up having a lot to contribute. 

The Essay Prompt

Max's essay was originally written for the pre-2013 Common Application essay prompt that states,  "Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence."  The influential person option no longer exists, but there are many ways to write about an important person with the current seven essay options on the 2018-19 Common Application .

Max's essay has recently been revised to fit the new 650-word length limit of the current Common Application, and it would work nicely with the 2018-19 prompt #2 :  "The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?"

The essay would also work well with Common Application essay option #5 ,  "Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others."

Max's Common Application Essay

Student Teacher

Anthony was neither a leader nor a role model. In fact, his teachers and his parents were constantly chastising him because he was disruptive, ate too much, and had a hard time staying focused. I met Anthony when I was a counselor at a local summer camp. The counselors had the usual duties of keeping kids from smoking, drowning, and killing each other. We made God’s eyes, friendship bracelets, collages, and other clichés. We rode horses, sailed boats, and hunted snipe.

Each counselor also had to teach a three-week course that was supposed to be a little more “academic” than the usual camp fare. I created a class called “Things that Fly.” I met with fifteen students for an hour a day as we designed, built, and flew kites, model rockets, and balsawood airplanes.

Anthony signed up for my class. He was not a strong student. He had been kept back a year at his school, and he was larger and louder than the other middle school kids. He talked out of turn and lost interest when others were talking. In my class, Anthony got some good laughs when he smashed his kite and threw the pieces into the wind. His rocket never made it to the launch pad because he crumpled it in a fit of frustration when a fin fell off.

In the final week, when we were making airplanes, Anthony surprised me when he drew a sketch of a sweep-wing jet and told me he wanted to make a “really cool plane.” Like many of Anthony’s teachers, and perhaps even his parents, I had largely given up on him. Now he suddenly showed a spark of interest. I didn’t think the interest would last, but I helped Anthony get started on a scale blueprint for his plane. I worked one-on-one with Anthony and had him use his project to demonstrate to his classmates how to cut, glue and mount the balsawood framework. When the frames were complete, we covered them with tissue paper. We mounted propellers and rubber bands. Anthony, with all his thumbs, created something that looked a bit like his original drawing despite some wrinkles and extra glue.

Our first test flight saw Anthony’s plane nose-dive straight into the ground. His plane had a lot of wing area in the back and too much weight in the front. I expected Anthony to grind his plane into the earth with his boot. He didn’t. He wanted to make his creation work. The class returned to the classroom to make adjustments, and Anthony added some big flaps to the wings. Our second test flight surprised the whole class. As many of the planes stalled, twisted, and nose-dived, Anthony’s flew straight out from the hillside and landed gently a good 50 yards away.

I’m not writing about Anthony to suggest that I was a good teacher. I wasn’t. In fact, I had quickly dismissed Anthony like many of his teachers before me. At best, I had viewed him as a distraction in my class, and I felt my job was to keep him from sabotaging the experience for the other students. Anthony’s ultimate success was a result of his own motivation, not my instruction.

Anthony’s success wasn’t just his plane. He had succeeded in making me aware of my own failures. Here was a student who was never taken seriously and had developed a bunch of behavioral issues as a result. I never stopped to look for his potential, discover his interests, or get to know the kid beneath the facade. I had grossly underestimated Anthony, and I am grateful that he was able to disillusion me.

I like to think that I’m an open-minded, liberal, and non-judgmental person. Anthony taught me that I’m not there yet.

Critique of Max's Common Application Essay

In general, Max has written a strong essay for the Common Application , but it does take a few risks. Below you'll find a discussion of the essay's strengths and weaknesses.

Essays on important or influential people can quickly become predictable and cliché when they focus on the typical heroes of high school students: a parent, a brother or sister, a coach, a teacher.

From the first sentence, we know that Max's essay is going to be different: "Anthony was neither a leader nor a role model." Max's strategy is a good one, and the admissions folks who read the essay will most likely be pleased to read an essay that isn't about how Dad is the greatest role model or Coach is the greatest mentor.

Also, essays on influential people often conclude with the writers explaining how they've become better people or owe all of their success to the mentor. Max takes the idea in a different direction; Anthony has made Max realize that he isn't as good of a person as he had thought, that he still has much to learn. The humility and self-critique is refreshing.

There's no one rule for writing a winning essay title , but Max's title is perhaps a little too clever. "Student Teacher" immediately suggests a student who is teaching (something that Max is doing in his narrative), but the true meaning is that Max's student taught him an important lesson. Thus, both Anthony and Max are "student teachers."

However, that double meaning is not apparent until after one has read the essay. The title by itself does not immediately grab our attention, nor does it clearly tell us what the essay will be about.

For the most part, Max maintains a pretty serious tone throughout the essay. The first paragraph does have a nice touch in the way that it pokes fun at all the cliché activities that are typical of summer camp.

The real strength of the essay, however, is that Max manages the tone to avoid sounding like he is bragging about his accomplishments. The self-criticism of the essay's conclusion may seem like a risk, but it arguably works to Max's advantage. The admissions counselors know that no student is perfect, so Max's awareness of his own short-comings will probably be interpreted as a sign of maturity, not as a red flag highlighting a defect in character.

The Essay Length

At 631 words, Max's essay is at the upper end of the Common Application length requirement of 250 to 650 words. This is not a bad thing. If a college is requesting an essay, it is because the admissions folks want to get to know the applicant better. They can learn more from you with a 600-word essay than with a 300-word essay. You may encounter counselors who argue that admissions officers are extremely busy, so shorter is always better. This little evidence to support such a claim, and you'll find very few applicants to top-tier colleges (such as the Ivy League schools) being admitted with essays that don't take advantage of the space allowed.

The ideal essay length is certainly subjective and depends in part on the applicant and the story being narrated, but Max's essay length is absolutely fine. This is particularly true because the prose is never wordy, flowery, or excessive. The sentences tend to be short and clear, so the overall reading experience isn't labored.

The Writing

The opening sentence grabs our attention because it isn't what we expect from an essay. The conclusion is also pleasingly surprising. Many students would be tempted to make themselves the hero of the essay and state what a profound impact they had on Anthony. Max turns it around, highlights his own failures, and gives the credit to Anthony.

The balance of the essay isn't perfect. Max's essay spends far more time describing Anthony than it does describe Anthony's influence. Ideally, Max could cut a couple of sentences from the middle of the essay and then develop a little further the two short concluding paragraphs.

Final Thoughts

Max's essay, like  Felicity's essay , takes some risks. It's possible an admissions officer would judge Max negatively for exposing his biases. But this is unlikely. In the end, Max presents himself as someone who is a leader (he is designing and teaching a class, after all) and as someone who is aware that he still has much to learn. These are qualities that should be attractive to most college admissions folks. After all, colleges want to admit students who are eager to learn and who have the self-awareness to recognize that they have room for a lot more personal growth.

It is not easy for parents to make the decision to send their child away into the waiting arms of strangers who promise to take care of them — people who promise to show them the wonders of nature, fun, new skills, and friendships. As a parent of two children, even I struggle with the idea, and I have been around summer camps my entire life.

The world needs the next generation to be more tolerant of each other’s views, ideology, and beliefs. Summer camp is an opportunity for children to be exposed to the best of human character. Carefully selected role models are dedicated to showing your child how to have fun, learn from others, and make friends in person rather than online. Camp allows kids to meet people from all over the world, every race, culture, and socioeconomic level. I still remember one of my counselors, Danny, from England, explaining to me, “The world is full of excuses. It doesn’t matter where you came from or what has happened to you. At the end of the day you choose how you treat others.”

There is something magical about a summer camp experience. Each and every camp in the world is different. Not merely because of geography or location, but because of the traditions and people who have touched the camp. Every camp has hidden treasures of history and traditions that give it character and identity. Even with agency camps like the YMCA where there is a common mission, every camp is unique in its style, program, games, geography, traditions, and experience.

Every staff member, alumni camper, and volunteer has memories associated with their time at their camp — memories that stay with them for their lifetime. Most people remember with fondness the coun¬selors, cabins, camp food, camp outs, and special happenings of their time.

Camp is an independent experience that shapes one’s character and life — a controlled, safe environment where chil-dren and youth are able to make their own decisions about simple things (what activity they want to do, how many s’mores they want to make, or what clothes they are going to wear) and about important things (who they will hang out with . . . who will be their friends).

Camp is a place where kids interact with people face-to-face and, at the same time, learn about themselves and others around a camp fire, under the stars, or sitting around a dining hall table. Camp allows the idea of boarding the train to Hogwarts to go from fantasy to reality — children find a world filled with possibilities unavailable to them in everyday life.

Camps give kids a chance to practice being the best they can be. They experience a place designed to create happy memories and encourage self-expression. They have the opportunity to climb towers, ride horses, shoot an arrow, and even experience the success of winning the big game! It stays with them forever. Kids will learn from a full range of emotions and human experi¬ences including homesickness, friendship, disagreements, team work, frustrations, jubilant success, and more.

As parents, our hopes and jobs are to ready our kids to be productive, independent, and capable people — to prepare them to thrive without us. Camp offers a way for kids to start developing those skills in the best possible environment. It makes me a bit sad every time my son runs off to join his cabin group without even a look back . . . and at the same time, I burst with pride watching him growing into a happy, independent, tolerant, open, confident, and capable person. I know that we will have plenty to talk about when he gets home from camp. I also know he will remember the trust and gift of his time at camp, and it will add to him for the rest of his life.

There is so much competition for our children’s time in the summer — sports practices, summer school, well-deserved vacations. But let’s not forget the value of a camp experience — camp is a gift we can give our children that they will benefit from and remember forever. If ever there was a time when the world needed a generation of future leaders who understood the intrica¬cies of living in a community, having toler¬ance, and being open — that time is now.

My Grandparents’ Place

These tasks gave us the opportunity to work in teams and get to know each other well. After hard work, we were served simple yet delicious food. We as students were made to brainstorm on the customs and traditions of various cultures. At the end of the camp we were asked to share what we learnt with everyone. Our teachers also came up and shared their views on the importance of such camps and the positive impact they have on our young minds.

This camp was a memorable experience for all of us as at the end of it, we took home many important skills and lessons. This camp not only taught us about various cultures and their lifestyles but along with this we learnt to work efficiently as a part of a team. Along with this, we learnt to socialize with other people and develop better communication skills.

As a student, I’ve experienced the importance of summer camp in a child’s development. In addition to these skills, summer camps provide students with a much needed get away from everyday studies. My Summer Camp Experience

Here I’d like to share my own experience with a summer camp in grade 6. Our school organised a little 3 day camp to a nearby hill-station. Many of our regular teachers joined us along with hike counsellors and tour guides who were extremely experienced in camping activities. We were given special instructions about discipline and behaviour which has to be maintained while at a high altitude place.

We started the journey in a bus where we played team games to socialize with students from other classes. Upon reaching our destination, we were informed about various aspects of camping and about everything we should pay attention to it. It was a first multi-day trip without our parents for most of us.

It was a challenge as we had to take care of ourselves and our belongings in the absence of our parents who usually complete most of these chores for us. This taught us about living independently and taking up responsibility. While on the campsite, all the students were divided into groups and were given various tasks such as helping to set up tents, gathering firewood and arranging food.

These tasks gave us a chance to work in teams and know each other well. After the hard work, we were served delicious but simple food. Once done with the dinner, every student helped tirelessly to clean up the surrounding areas and wash the dishes. These things develop helpful nature in the kids and inculcate a fine habit of completing their work themselves.

We were taken into the woods to hike and explore nature and its elements. There we were taught about the importance of various vegetation and we also learnt about the local wildlife. While hiking in the dense and endless woods we received a chance to explore the intricacy and wonders of nature.

The entire camping experience holds an overwhelming amount of life skill to learn and apply. I feel extremely lucky to have got the chance to experience this time as it taught me values of life. Every parent should ensure that their child spends enough time in understanding and exploring nature rather than indulging in technology all the time. Nature teaches us the concept of simple living and provides serenity to our minds in our fast moving lives.

Keeping in mind the vast difference this little endeavor creates in a child’s development schools across various countries have started organizing such camps. These are aimed at ensuring the overall development of a child along with academic excellence. Students as well as parents must encourage the students to participate in such camps.

Grandparents are hosting 'cousin camp' and it's the absolute best

Imagine having a house full of kids without their parents or screens, a dozen (or more!) mouths to feed, and long, empty summer days just begging to be filled with activities.

This scenario may sound like a nightmare to some, but a growing number of grandparents are welcoming the challenge of hosting their grandchildren for a "cousin camp."

The idea of cousin camp recently went viral when Clint Fischer of South Dakota shared a sweet snap of a cousin camp hosted by his parents, Wayne and Melanie Fischer. Posted on X on July 20, it has 2.7 million views to date.

"For the past 8 years, they invite all the grandkids age 5+ to spend 4 days on the farm, away from parents, with their cousins," he wrote. "Our girls talk about it, and look forward to it, all year long. And the parents enjoy the weekend respite as well. Just very thankful for them willing to put in the effort so the cousins can create these memories."

Melanie, a former Sunday School teacher, and Wayne, who has spent time as a 4-H judge, live on a farm that feels especially suited for hosting gaggles of grandkids. But that doesn't necessarily make it an easy task, especially because Melanie has suffered from health complications through the years.

"We as her kids are probably most proud and impressed that over the past eight years she has had two separate cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatments," Clint shares with TODAY.com, "and through all that turmoil, she has not missed a beat hosting cousin camp."

Since the goal is "to replicate traditional summer camp experience," these grandparents turn the bedrooms of their large farmhouse into "cabins." The kids are expected to stay in bed until the bell rings in the morning, and then they get dressed and make their beds before attending the flag raising ceremony, which includes the Pledge of Allegiance and a round of stretches. The days are filled with music, crafts and field trips and often end with campfires at night.

After four days and three nights, parents return for pickup and the Sunday "program," which includes a cousin performance of songs, cheers and presentations of what each child liked best about camp. The day culminates with a family picnic and ballgame.

The couple, who has four kids and 11 grandkids (with another on the way!), certainly isn't just winging it. "I keep detailed records of each year, and then we kind of reevaluate and decide what worked, what didn't, and move on to planning for the next year," Melanie says.

The family has been fielding so many questions about cousin camp logistics that they ended up putting together their own Cousin Camp Guide .

In fact, there are a number of resources for grandparents looking to host a camp for their grandchildren, including the " Cousin Camp " book by Susan Alexander Yates.

The author, who hails from Falls Church, Virginia, has five children and 21 grandchildren — and just had her first great grandchild last week. Yates was initially inspired to begin bringing her grandchildren together because many of them lived in different states; she wanted to provide an opportunity for them to know and love one another. She and her husband ran their cousin camp for 11 years, and the last three of those years, they hosted all 21 grandchildren.

"What's been so special has been to see the payoff now that they are teenagers," Yates says. For example, her granddaughter from Nashville went on a road trip with her grandson who attends the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to visit another cousin's house in Memphis.

After years of trial and error, one of the "most powerful things" about camp has been the buddy system. Each year, an older child would be assigned a younger "buddy" (who is not a sibling) to help with tasks like filling their plate at mealtimes, writing in their camp journals and finding their shoes. "When we did it, it was self-preservation, because we couldn't fill that many water bottles," Yates laughs, but then the buddy system became an integral part of camp.

Because of family bonds like this, Ahna Fulmer of Lancaster, Pennsylvania attended her family cousin camp for 30 years .

"We were still coming to cousins camp when the youngest was 21 and the oldest of us was 37," she tells TODAY.com. "Five of us were married with kids of our own. We loved it because my grandparents were so intentional about the time they spent with us."

Jill Savage of Normal, Illinois has been hosting a cousin camp for five years now. To accommodate the age range of her grandchildren, Savage has an older cousin camp and a younger cousin camp. "This allows us to do age appropriate activities with the kids," she says. "During younger cousin camp, we invite the older cousins to be 'camp counselors.'"

Savage chooses a theme each year and plans activities around it. But she also repeats some favorite activities. "One is letting them find a recipe, plan a meal, shop for it and cook it for us. They love doing that. Another is making tie-dye shirts," she says. 

If you want to plan a cousin camp for your family but feel overwhelmed, Yates has a number of tips.

First she says, "All families are messy. There are no perfect families." A crying child, a spilled juice or a sibling spat can (and likely will) happen.

But more importantly, camp can be anything you want it to be. You can take the heart of cousin camp idea and transfer it to your own situation, whether you are museum hopping with grandkids in New York City or a single person and hosting nieces and nephews on your farm.

"There are so many grandparents out there right now," says Yates. "We're living longer, we're healthier. We want to make a difference with our grandchildren."

I’m not alone in my love for summer camp-inspired interiors: Nancy Meyers’s 1998 remake of The Parent Trap , starring Lindsay Lohan, has launched a thousand blog posts about how to copy the Camp Walden look in your home (and yes, I clicked on those posts). Professional designers are equally enchanted: “Camp aesthetic is so appealing because it reminds us of summer and youth and nostalgia and simpler times,” Portland, Oregon–based designer Max Humphrey , the author of Lodge: An Indoorsy Tour Of America’s National Parks , explains. “Camp is a place and shared experience that connects us across generations and zip codes,” Tereasa Surratt, a co-owner and creator of Camp Wandawega , a resort and event space in Wisconsin that is a former campground, adds. For interior designer Leanne Ford , the appeal lies in the materials and the setting. “ My summer camp had massive stone fireplaces and beautiful, aged log cabin walls, with large panels of windows that looked out at the most wonderful views. I think it was these kinds of things that stuck with me—inspiring me as a child and creating the kind of environment that opens up my creative mind even to this day.”

Wanting to break down the elements of classic summer camp style, I asked these design experts about what exactly makes it so appealing. They were generous enough to share their thoughts, along with strategies on how to get the look at home. “You can evoke those feelings through your decor. It’s also the type of aesthetic that you can do in big ways or in little ways, depending on your commitment to summer camp vibes,” Humphrey says. Here’s how to weave a little bit of that summertime spirit into your favorite spaces.

Bring the Outdoors In

All of the pros I talked to used this exact phrase when asked how to capture the feeling of summer camp. “This can be literal just with outdoor elements, like plants or wood furniture, or more figurative elements like botanical-inspired wallpapers and fabrics,” Humphrey says. “Start with materials and things that you can literally find in the space right outside of your home,” Ford, who has often cited her childhood summer camp as a source of inspiration , suggests. Ford recommends foraging for branches in your backyard and then popping them into a vase or collecting beautiful rocks and filling your bowls with them. “You’ll get that same sense of being grounded in your home that you do when you are out in nature.”

Let Mother Nature Dictate the Materials You Use

Follow the same ethos when renovating a space you want to embody the camp aesthetic. “When sourcing materials for your project, look for ones that you would find in nature,” Ford says. “For example, opt for a roman clay or limewash finish instead of paint on your drywall, or create a fireplace hearth from river rocks.”

Start with a Neutral Foundation

Ford suggests sticking to muted, natural tones, but she says, “Don’t forget to layer. I promise you, a monochromatic space does not have to feel stark. Use it as a blank canvas and start layering the life into it with rugs, lighting, blankets, art, branches, etc.”

Layer in Camp-Inspired Colors

“Summer camp definitely has a color palette that people can picture without ever having been: forest greens, gold, that perfect camp red color, and browns,” Humphrey says. “Using color as a design element means you can do it in non-camp ways but still get the point across.”

Bring on Secondhand Finds…

All of the experts felt vintage elements were essential to successful camp-inspired décor. “Elements sourced from antiques shops lend an air of authenticity and storied past, grounding your space in a sense of enduring charm,” Krista Stokes, senior creative director at Atlantic Hospitality , whose hotels tap into Maine’s particular brand of camp core, explains.

…Especially Vintage Photographs

“I can’t think of a single design element that holds more emotional power to connect you to your childhood memories,” Surratt, who collects antique summer camp photo albums, says. “They are time transporters and conversation starters.” She suggests framing some, leaving out whole albums, tucking a few into pages of coffee table books to fall out and be discovered, pinning them to a bulletin board or the inside of a cupboard door, and placing them under glass on a dresser top.

Leave the Wood Alone

“You don’t have to paint the wood walls!” Ford, who is herself famous for painting almost everything white, says. If you’re aiming for the camp-inspired style, natural wood is a welcome element.

Fill the Walls with Wonky Accessories

“Get creative with your décor—use oars, arts and crafts, wonky ceramics, twigs, rocks, sails,” Ford suggests. At Camp Wandawega you’ll find arrows and oars in every corner, including hung on walls in intricate patterns, but as Surratt notes, “They aren’t just for decoration: Our visitors use them.” Humphrey suggests using retro coolers as case pieces and accessorizing with vintage thermoses, lanterns, and lunch boxes.

Stock Up on Classic Wool Blankets

“Camp blankets are the most functional thing you can add to any space to say camp , but more important, they’re a necessity,” Surratt says. They can be found at Camp Wandawega wrapped around visitors during summer campfires and on every bed in fall and winter. “Nobody makes wool blankets better than Pendleton and Faribault, two historic brands,” she adds.

Add Texture

“Texture, texture, texture!” Ford extols. It’s essential to the camp aesthetic. “I am always looking for ways to bring earth (and therefore soul) into a space. Texture is how I do it. Mix wood, concrete, tile, brass, etc. like I did in this kitchen [seen above] for the ultimate cozy, lived in vibe.”

Embrace the Mix

“It doesn’t have to match,” Stokes says. “Camp design is all about patterns and colors that evoke feelings of a childhood summer or cozy winter nights: plaid, gingham, stripes.” Surratt adds, “The thing about the camp aesthetic is that it’s the culmination of decades of campers, each with their own objects, tools, badges that collectively have become the camp aesthetic. A 1930s felt pennant above a headboard next to a 1950s blanket across a side chair, next to a modern craft camp pottery project can all work together if they’re authentic.”

Avoid Prop Decor

While both Humphrey and Surratt have worked with brands to create camp-inspired home accessories, like wallpaper designed by Humphrey and bedding by Surratt (the new collection launched in Target on August 1), the pros all cautioned against buying anything that’s a facsimile of a vintage item. “Whenever possible, scour Etsy and eBay for vintage originals before buying new knockoffs. The end result will add more substance and soul to your rooms,” Surratt advises.

Be a Little Kitschy

“Camp aesthetic calls for a blend of bespoke furnishings, antique finds, and sometimes, an item or two with a dash of kitsch. In camp design,” says Stokes. “There is always room for silliness, magic, and joy.” Just don’t overdo it on the pennants, okay?
