मोबाईल: मला माफ कर! मला वाटले माझे अस्तित्व तुझ्यापेक्षाही महत्वाचे आहे.

महाराष्ट्राची राज्यभाषा मराठी आहे. मराठी ही राजमान्य लोकमान्य राज्यभाषा झाल्याला आता चाळीस वर्ष होऊन गेले, तरी महाराष्ट्रातही मराठीला योग्य स्थान नाही. हे मनातील शल्य व्यक्त करताना कवी कुसुमाग्रज असे म्हणतात, ” महाराष्ट्राच्या राजधानीत मंत्रालयासमोर मराठी भाषा डोक्यावर राज्य मान्यतेचा सोनेरी मुकुट घालून उभी आहे; परंतु तिच्या अंगावरचे वस्त्र फाटके आहेत.” मराठीच्या स्वतःचे राज्य असावे, मराठीला राजभाषेचा मान मिळावा म्हणून वर्षानुवर्षे हजारो मराठी सुपुत्रांनी धडपड केली, संघर्ष केले. प्रसंगी बलिदान ही केले.

अशी या महाराष्ट्रातील शूरवीरांचे आकांक्षा होती. त्यांच्या अविरत प्रयत्नाने १९६० साली १ मे च्या मुहूर्तावर मराठी ही राजभाषा झाली. पण आजही महाराष्ट्राच्या राजधानीत ती परकी व पोरगी आहे. दीडशे वर्ष ज्यांनी तुम्हाला गुलाम केले बनवले ह्या राज्यकर्त्यांच्या इंग्रजी भाषणे आज या स्वतंत्र राज्यातील जनतेच्या मनावर मायाबी जादू केली आहे. इंग्रजांच्या राज्यात कारभाराची भाषा झालेली इंग्रजी नोकरी मिळवण्याच्या सुलभ सोपान ठरली. आजही लोक आपल्या मुलांना नोकऱ्या मिळाव्यात, परदेशगमनाचा योग लवकर यावा, अशा उद्देशांनी इंग्रजी माध्यमाच्या शाळेत दाखल करतात. इंग्रजी माध्यमांच्या शाळेत शिकणारी ही आजची मुले उद्याचे नागरिक होतील, तेव्हा त्यांनी मराठी भाषेविषयी आपुलकी वाटणार नाही. ही मुले मराठीतील अभिजात वाड्मयाचा आस्वाद घेऊ शकतील नाही.

इंग्रजी माध्यमांच्या शाळा शिकणारी ही मुले आपला रिकामा वेळ सोशल मीडिया ऑनलाईन गेम्स यामध्ये वाया घालतील. मग त्यांना शिवाजी- तानाजी यांच्या पराक्रमाच्या कथा कशा कळणार ? ब. मो. पुरंदरे यांच्या पुस्तकाशी त्यांची ओळख कशी होणार ? अमरेंद्र गाडगीळ यांच्या ‘ आईची देणगी’ चा आशीर्वाद देऊ शकणार नाही. साने गुरुजींच्या ‘ गोड गोड गोष्टी’ आणि सुंदर पत्रे यांच्यापासून ते अन्न राहतील. पु ल देशपांडे यांच्या लिखाणातील विनोद त्यांना समजणार नाही. केशवसुत इंग्रज यांच्या कविता त्यांच्या ओठावर रेंगाळणार नाहीत. फार मोठी प्राचीन परंपरा लाभलेली मराठी साहित्याचा दरबार हळूहळू रिकामा होऊ लागेल.

इंग्रजीचा आग्रह धरणाऱ्या विद्वानांचे म्हणणे असते की, इंग्रजी ही ज्ञानभाषा आहे. जगात सर्वत्र व्यवहाराला उपयोगी पडते. या मंडळींना सांगावेसे वाटते की, तुम्ही इंग्रजी भाषा अवश्य शिका; पण त्यासाठी मराठी भाषेचा बळी देऊ नका. त्यासाठी सारे शिक्षण इंग्रजी माध्यमात शिकण्याची आवश्यकता नाही. जपान सारख्या प्रगत देशात सर्व शिक्षण त्यांच्या मातृभाषेतूनच चालते. आज जगाच्या कानाकोपऱ्यात त्याचे वैज्ञानिक व व्यापारी जात असतात; पण त्यांचे कोठेच अडत नाही.

हे सर्व पाहिले की, या महाराष्ट्रात मराठीचे भवितव्य काय ? या विचाराने मन अस्वस्थ होते. मराठीचे शुद्ध, तरल स्वरूप चिरंतन करण्यासाठी दत्तो वामन पोतदार यांनी सांगितलेला ” मराठीचा कर्मयोग” सर्वांनी स्वीकारला पाहिजे. मी कोठेही स्वाक्षरी करीन ती शुद्ध मराठीतच, असा आग्रह सर्वांनी धरला पाहिजे. दोन मराठी माणसे एकत्र आली, तर त्यांनी मराठीत संवाद साधला पाहिजे. आपल्या शहरातील इतर भाषिकांना ही आपल्या मराठीच्या शुद्ध स्वरूपाची ओळख करून दिली पाहिजे. यासाठी इतर भाषांचा राग, वा अपमान करण्याची गरज नाही. फक्त अमृतालाही पैजा जिंकणाऱ्या आपल्या मातृभाषेचा, मराठी भाषेचा विचार कधीही पडू देऊ नका, असे आवाहन करावेसे वाटते

आई म्हणायची लग्न झाल्यानंतर तुझे हे वाचन काही कामी येणार नाही. या व्यतिरिक्त तू घरची कामे शिक. स्वयंपाक करायला शिक. नाहीतर सासरी आमच्या नावाने खडे फोडशील. पण मी त्यांचे बोलणे एका कानाने ऐकून दुसऱ्या कानाने सोडून द्यायचे आणि पुन्हा वाचायला लागायचे.

माझे वाचनाचे खुळ आता घरातील सर्वांना माहीत होते. वाचनाचे एवढे वेड लागले होते की मला खाण्यापिण्याची शुद्ध नसायची. कितीही वाचले काहीही वाचले तरी वाचनाची तहान काही भागत नाही. एकेदिवशी दिवाळीला भाऊबीजेला भावाला पाटावर बसवून त्याला ओवाळले, ओवाळून झाल्यावर त्याने माझ्या हातात एक बॉक्स ठेवला आणि म्हणाला की ही तुझी भाऊबीजेची माझ्याकडून भेट.

मी ति भेट घेतली मला असं वाटलं की त्या बॉक्समध्ये एखादा ड्रेस किंवा पर्स असेल पण जेव्हा तो बॉक्स मी उघडून पाहिला तेव्हा मला आश्चर्याचा धक्काच बसला. माझ्या आनंदाला काही सीमा उरली नाही कारण त्या बॉक्समध्ये जुन्या कादंबऱ्या, काही नवीन मासिक, दिवाळी अंक व आणखी काही भरपूर पुस्तके होती. ते पाहून माझ्या आनंदाला पारावार राहिला नाही.

नंतर नंतर मी अनेक दिग्गज प्रतिभावंत लेखकांची पुस्तके वाचली आहेत. व. पु. काळे, सुधा मूर्ती, साने गुरुजी , रणजित देसाई अशा अनेक लेखकांची पुस्तके मी वाचली आहेत. ऐतिहासिक कादंबऱ्या, प्रवास वर्णन, व्यक्ती चरित्र, आत्मचरित्र वाचायला मला खूप आवडतं. असे म्हणतात की पुस्तकी ज्ञान कधी वाया जात नाही ते अगदी बरोबरच आहे.

पुस्तके वाचल्यानंतर माझ्यामध्ये खूप बदल झाला आहे. वाचनामुळे आपल्या ज्ञानात खूप भर पडते. प्रसिद्ध लेखक व.पु काळे यांच्या वपुर्जा या पुस्तकात सांगितले आहे की माणसाला काही ना काही छंद हवा, स्वप्न हवीत. पुरी होणारी किंवा कायम अपुरी राहणारी. त्यातून तो स्वतःला हरवायला शिकतो. हे हरवण सापडणं प्रत्येकाचं निराळं असतं.

स्वप्न आणि छंद माणसाला पिसे लावतात वेडावून सोडतात. एक वेगळे जग एक वेगळे आयुष्य आपल्यासमोर आणून उभं करतात. जो छंद आपण जोपासतोय त्या क्षेत्रात काही तरी करायला मिळणं त्याहून सुंदर अनुभव समाधान आणि आनंद दुसरा कुठलाच नाही. या वाचनाने मला जगायला शिकवलं, जिंकायला शिकवलं, आभाळात उंच उंच भरारी घ्यायला शिकवल. म्हणून प्रत्येक माणसाने कोणता ना कोणतातरी छंद जोपासला पाहिजे.

साने गुरुजीनी लिहिलेले श्यामची आई हे पुस्तक मला खूप आवडते. हे माझे सर्वात आवडते पुस्तक. या पुस्तकानी मला अनेक अनमोल विचार दिले आहेत. वाचनामुळे मला घरी बसून जगभराचे ज्ञान मिळत आहे. पुस्तके ही माझे खरे मार्गदर्शक आणि मित्र बनले आहेत. या वाचनामुळे मला एक वेगळी ऊर्जा एक वेगळाच आनंद मिळतो.

वाचनामुळे मला विज्ञान आणि तंत्रज्ञानाबद्दल मला अनेक गोष्टी समजल्या आहेत. जर कुठे बाहेर जायचे असेल लांब प्रवास असेल तर मी नेहमीच माझ्या सोबत एक तरी पुस्तक ठेवते आणि प्रवासामध्ये ते वाचून पूर्णही करते. त्यामुळे प्रवासाचा कंटाळा येत नाही. शाळेला सुट्टी पडल्यानंतर उन्हाळ्याच्या सुट्टीमध्ये दिवसातील काही तास मी वाचण्यातच घालवले.

पुस्तक असल्यामुळे फक्त ज्ञानच नाही तर एकाग्रताही वाढते. माणसाच्या व्यक्तिमत्व विकासासाठी पुस्तकांचा फार मोठा वाटा आहे. जीवनात कितीही संकटे आली तरी त्याला कसे सामोरे जायचे हे पुस्तकांनी मला शिकवले.

Marathi is an Indo-European language spoken by the people of Maharashtra, India, and is one of the official languages of Western India. Because Marathi is not as widely spoken as languages like Hindi and Bengali, it can be difficult to find places offering formal courses outside of India. However, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. If you’re interested in learning Marathi, a good way to start is by familiarizing yourself with simple words, phrases, and grammatical structures. You can then strengthen your understanding of the language by reading Marathi texts, watching movies and TV shows in Marathi, and engaging in casual conversation with a native speaker.

If you are looking for the “secret formula” for writing a “winning” college essay, you have come to the wrong place. The reality is there is no silver bullet or strategy to write your way to an acceptance. There is not one topic or approach that will guarantee a favorable outcome.

At the end of the day, every admission office just wants to know more about you, what you value, and what excites you. They want to hear about your experiences through your own words and in your own voice. As you set out to write your essay, you will no doubt get input (both sought-after and unsolicited) on what to write. But how about what NOT Notcoin to write? There are avoidable blunders that applicants frequently make in drafting their essays. I asked college admission leaders, who have read thousands of submissions, to share their thoughts.

Don’t Go In There

There is wide consensus on this first one, so before you call on your Jedi mind tricks or predictive analytics, listen to the voices of a diverse range of admission deans. Peter Hagan, executive director of admissions at Syracuse University, sums it up best, saying, “I would recommend that students try not to get inside of our heads. He adds, “Too often the focus is on what they think we want.”

Andy Strickler, dean of admission and financial aid at Connecticut College agrees, warning, “Do NOT get caught in the trap of trying to figure out what is going to impress the admission committee. You have NO idea who is going to read your essay and what is going to connect with them. So, don't try to guess that.” Victoria Romero, vice president for enrollment, at Scripps College adds, “Do not write about something you don’t care about.” She says, “I think students try to figure out what an admission officer wants to read, and the reality is the reader begins every next essay with no expectations about the content THEY want to read.” Chrystal Russell, dean of admission at Hampden-Sydney College, agrees, saying, “If you're not interested in writing it, we will not be interested when reading it.” Jay Jacobs, vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Vermont elaborates, advising. “Don’t try to make yourself sound any different than you are.” He says, “The number one goal for admission officers is to better understand the applicant, what they like to do, what they want to do, where they spend the majority of their time, and what makes them tick. If a student stays genuine to that, it will shine through and make an engaging and successful essay.”

Don’t Be Artificial

The headlines about college admission are dominated by stories about artificial intelligence and the college essay. Let’s set some ground rules–to allow ChatGPT or some other tool to do your work is not only unethical, it is also unintelligent. The only worse mistake you could make is to let another human write your essay for you. Instead of preoccupying yourself with whether or not colleges are using AI detection software (most are not), spend your time focused on how best to express yourself authentically. Rick Clark is the executive director of strategic student success at Georgia Institute of Technology, one of the first institutions to clearly outline their AI policy for applicants. He says, “Much of a college application is devoted to lines, boxes, and numbers. Essays and supplements are the one place to establish connection, personality, and distinction. AI, in its current state, is terrible at all three.” He adds, “My hope is that students will use ChatGPT or other tools for brainstorming and to get started, but then move quickly into crafting an essay that will provide insight and value.”

Don’t Overdo It

Michael Stefanowicz, vice president for enrollment management at Landmark College says, “You can only cover so much detail about yourself in an admission essay, and a lot of students feel pressure to tell their life story or choose their most defining experience to date as an essay topic. Admission professionals know that you’re sharing just one part of your lived experience in the essay.” He adds, “Some of the favorite essays I’ve read have been episodic, reflecting on the way you’ve found meaning in a seemingly ordinary experience, advice you’ve lived out, a mistake you’ve learned from, or a special tradition in your life.” Gary Ross, vice president for admission and financial aid at Colgate University adds, “More than a few applicants each year craft essays that talk about the frustration and struggles they have experienced in identifying a topic for their college application essay. Presenting your college application essay as a smorgasbord of topics that ultimately landed on the cutting room floor does not give us much insight into an applicant.”

Don’t Believe In Magic

Jason Nevinger, senior director of admission at the University of Rochester warns, “Be skeptical of anyone or any company telling you, ‘This is the essay that got me into _____.’ There is no magic topic, approach, sentence structure, or prose that got any student into any institution ever.” Social media is littered with advertisements promising strategic essay help. Don’t waste your time, energy, or money trying to emulate a certain style, topic, or tone. Liz Cheron is chief executive officer for the Coalition for College and former assistant vice president of enrollment & dean of admissions at Northeastern University. She agrees with Nevinger, saying “Don't put pressure on yourself to find the perfect, slam dunk topic. The vast majority of college essays do exactly what they're supposed to do–they are well-written and tell the admission officer more about the student in that student's voice–and that can take many different forms.”

Don’t Over Recycle

Beatrice Atkinson-Myers, associate director of global recruitment at the University of California at Santa Cruz tells students, “Do not use the same response for each university; research and craft your essay to match the program at the university you are interested in studying. Don't waste time telling me things I can read elsewhere in your application. Use your essay to give the admissions officer insights into your motivations, interests, and thinking. Don't make your essay the kitchen sink, focus on one or two examples which demonstrate your depth and creativity.” Her UC colleague, Jim Rawlins, associate vice chancellor of enrollment management at the University of California at San Diego agrees, saying “Answer the question. Not doing so is the surest way we can tell you are simply giving us a snippet of something you actually wrote for a different purpose.”

Don’t Overedit

Emily Roper-Doten, vice president for undergraduate admissions and financial assistance at Clark University warns against “Too many editors!” She says, “Pick a couple of trusted folks to be your sounding board when considering topics and as readers once you have drafts. You don’t want too many voices in your essay to drown you out!” Scripps’ Romero agrees, suggesting, “Ask a good friend, someone you trust and knows you well, to read your essays.” She adds, “The goal is for the admission committee to get to know a little about you and who better to help you create that framework, than a good friend. This may not work for all students because of content but helps them understand it’s important to be themselves.” Whitney Soule, vice provost and dean of admissions at The University of Pennsylvania adds, “Avoid well-meaning editorial interference that might seem to polish your writing but actually takes your own personal ‘shine’ right out of the message.” She says, “As readers, we connect to applicants through their genuine tone and style. Considering editorial advice for flow and message is OK but hold on to the 'you' for what you want to say and how you want to say it.”

Don’t Get Showy

Palmer Muntz, senior regional admissions counselor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks cautions applicants, “Don’t be fancier than you are. You don’t need to put on airs.” He adds, “Yes, proofread your work for grammar and spelling, but be natural. Craft something you’d want to read yourself, which probably means keeping your paragraphs short, using familiar words, and writing in an active voice.” Connecticut College’s Strickler agrees, warning, “Don't try to be someone you are not. If you are not funny, don't try to write a funny essay. If you are not an intellectual, trying to write an intellectual essay is a bad idea.”

Anthony Jones, the vice president of enrollment management at Loyola University New Orleans offers a unique metaphor for thinking about the essay. He says, “In the new world of the hyper-fast college admission process, it's become easy to overlook the essential meaning of the college application. It's meant to reveal Y...O...U, the real you, not some phony digital avatar. Think of the essay as the essence of that voice but in analog. Like the completeness and authenticity captured in a vinyl record, the few lines you're given to explain your view should be a slow walk through unrestrained expression chock full of unapologetic nuances, crevices of emotion, and exactness about how you feel in the moment. Then, and only then, can you give the admissions officer an experience that makes them want to tune in and listen for more.”

Don’t Be A Downer

James Nondorf, vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at The University of Chicago says, “Don’t be negative about other people, be appreciative of those who have supported you, and be excited about who you are and what you will bring to our campus!” He adds, “While admissions offices want smart students for our classrooms, we also want kind-hearted, caring, and joyous students who will add to our campus communities too.”

Don’t Pattern Match

Alan Ramirez is the dean of admission and financial aid at Sewanee, The University of the South. He explains, “A big concern I have is when students find themselves comparing their writing to other students or past applicants and transform their writing to be more like those individuals as a way to better their chances of offering a more-compelling essay.” He emphasizes that the result is that the “essay is no longer authentic nor the best representation of themselves and the whole point of the essay is lost. Their distinctive voice and viewpoint contribute to the range of voices in the incoming class, enhancing the diversity of perspectives we aim to achieve.” Ramirez simple tells students, “Be yourself, that’s what we want to see, plus there's no one else who can do it better than you!”

Don’t Feel Tied To A Topic

Jessica Ricker is the vice president for enrollment and dean of admissions and financial aid at Skidmore College. She says, “Sometimes students feel they must tell a story of grief or hardship, and then end up reliving that during the essay-writing process in ways that are emotionally detrimental. I encourage students to choose a topic they can reflect upon positively but recommend that if they choose a more challenging experience to write about, they avoid belaboring the details and instead focus on the outcome of that journey.” She adds, "They simply need to name it, frame its impact, and then help us as the reader understand how it has shaped their lens on life and their approach moving forward.”

Landmark College’s Stefanowicz adds, “A lot of students worry about how personal to get in sharing a part of their identity like your race or heritage (recalling last year’s Supreme Court case about race-conscious admissions), a learning difference or other disability, your religious values, LGBTQ identity…the list goes on.” He emphasizes, “This is always your choice, and your essay doesn’t have to be about a defining identity. But I encourage you to be fully yourself as you present yourself to colleges—because the college admission process is about finding a school where your whole self is welcome and you find a setting to flourish!”

Don’t Be Redundant

Hillen Grason Jr., dean of admission at Franklin & Marshall College, advises, “Don't repeat academic or co-curricular information that is easily identifiable within other parts of your application unless the topic is a core tenant of you as an individual.” He adds, “Use your essay, and other parts of your application, wisely. Your essay is the best way to convey who your authentic self is to the schools you apply. If you navigated a situation that led to a dip in your grades or co-curricular involvement, leverage the ‘additional information’ section of the application.

Thomas Marr is a regional manager of admissions for the Americas at The University of St Andrews in Scotland and points out that “Not all international schools use the main college essay as part of their assessment when reviewing student applications.” He says, “At the University of St Andrews, we focus on the supplemental essay and students should avoid the mistake of making the supplemental a repeat of their other essay. The supplemental (called the Personal Statement if using the UCAS application process) is to show the extent of their passion and enthusiasm for the subject/s to which they are applying and we expect about 75% of the content to cover this. They can use the remaining space to mention their interests outside of the classroom. Some students confuse passion for the school with passion for their subject; do not fall into that trap.”

A Few Final Don’ts

Don’t delay. Every college applicant I have ever worked with has wished they had started earlier. You can best avoid the pitfalls above if you give yourself the time and space to write a thoughtful essay and welcome feedback openly but cautiously. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect . Do your best, share your voice, and stay true to who you are.

Surgeon General: Why I’m Calling for a Warning Label on Social Media Platforms

One of the most important lessons I learned in medical school was that in an emergency, you don’t have the luxury to wait for perfect information. You assess the available facts, you use your best judgment, and you act quickly.

The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours . Additionally, nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies.

It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe. Evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior. When asked if a warning from the surgeon general would prompt them to limit or monitor their children’s social media use, 76 percent of people in one recent survey of Latino parents said yes.

To be clear, a warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people. The advisory I issued a year ago about social media and young people’s mental health included specific recommendations for policymakers, platforms and the public to make social media safer for kids. Such measures, which already have strong bipartisan support, remain the priority.

Legislation from Congress should shield young people from online harassment, abuse and exploitation and from exposure to extreme violence and sexual content that too often appears in algorithm-driven feeds. The measures should prevent platforms from collecting sensitive data from children and should restrict the use of features like push notifications, autoplay and infinite scroll, which prey on developing brains and contribute to excessive use.

Additionally, companies must be required to share all of their data on health effects with independent scientists and the public — currently they do not — and allow independent safety audits. While the platforms claim they are making their products safer, Americans need more than words. We need proof.

“Can you name the truck with four-wheel drive, smells like a steak, and seats 35?”

Back in 1998, “The Simpsons” joked about the Canyonero, an SUV so big that they were obviously kidding. At that time, it was preposterous to think anyone would drive something that was “12 yards long, two lanes wide, 65 tons of American Pride.”

In 2024, that joke isn’t far from reality.

And our reality is one where more pedestrians and bicyclists are getting killed on U.S. streets than at any time in the past 45 years – over 1,000 bicyclists and 7,500 pedestrians in 2022 alone.

Vehicle size is a big part of this problem. A recent paper by urban economist Justin Tyndall found that increasing the front-end height of a vehicle by roughly 4 inches (10 centimeters) increases the chance of a pedestrian fatality by 22% . The risk increases by 31% for female pedestrians or those over 65 years, and by 81% for children.

It’s hard to argue with physics, so there is a certain logic in blaming cars for rising traffic deaths. In fact, if a bicyclist is hit by a pickup truck instead of a car, Tyndall suggests that they are 291% more likely to die.

Yet automakers have long asserted that if everyone simply followed the rules of the road, nobody would die. Vehicle size is irrelevant to that assertion.

My discipline, traffic engineering , acts similarly. We underestimate our role in perpetuating bad outcomes, as well as the role that better engineering can play in designing safer communities and streets.

Millions of road deaths

How bad are the bad outcomes? The U.S. has been tracking car-related road deaths since 1899. As a country, we hit the threshold of 1 million cumulative deaths in 1953, 2 million in 1975 and 3 million in 1998. While the past several years of data have not yet been released, I estimate that the U.S. topped 4 million total road deaths sometime in the spring of 2024.

How many of those are pedestrians and bicyclists? Analysts didn’t do a great job of separating out the pedestrian and cyclist deaths in the early years , but based on later trends, my estimate is that some 930,000 pedestrians and bicyclists have been killed by automobiles in the U.S.

How many of those deaths do we blame on big cars or bad streets? The answer is, very few.

As I show in my new book, “ Killed by a Traffic Engineer: Shattering the Delusion that Science Underlies our Transportation System ,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls road user error the “ critical reason” behind 94% of crashes, injuries and deaths .

Crash data backs that up.

Police investigate crashes and inevitably look to see which road users, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, are most at fault. It’s easy to do because in almost any crash, road user error appears to be the obvious problem.

This approach helps insurance companies figure out who needs to pay. It also helps automakers and traffic engineers rationalize away all these deaths. Everyone – except the families and friends of these 4 million victims – goes to sleep at night feeling good that bad-behaving road users just need more education or better enforcement.

But road user error only scratches the surface of the problem.

Who creates dangerous streets?

When traffic engineers build an overly wide street that looks more like a freeway , and a speeding driver in a Canyonero crashes, subsequent crash data blames the driver for speeding.

When traffic engineers provide lousy crosswalks separated by long distances , and someone jaywalks and gets hit by that speeding Canyonero driver, one or both of these road users will be blamed in the official crash report.

And when automakers build gargantuan vehicles that can easily go double the speed limit and fill them with distracting touchscreens , crash data will still blame the road users for almost anything bad that happens.

These are the sorts of systemic conditions that lead to many so-called road user errors. Look just below the surface, though, and it becomes clear that many human errors represent the typical, rational behaviors of typical, rational road users given the transportation system and vehicle options we put in front of them.

Look more deeply, and you can start to see how our underlying crash data gives everyone a pass but the road users themselves. Everyone wants a data-driven approach to road safety, but today’s standard view of crash data lets automakers, insurance companies and policymakers who shape vehicle safety standards off the hook for embiggening these ever-larger cars and light-duty trucks.

It also absolves traffic engineers, planners and policymakers of blame for creating a transportation system where for most Americans, the only rational choice for getting around is a car .

Understanding road behavior

Automakers want to sell cars and make money. And if bigger SUVs seem safer to potential customers, while also being much more profitable , it’s easy to see how interactions between road users and car companies – making seemingly rational decisions – have devolved into an SUV arms race.

Even though these same vehicles are less safe for pedestrians, bicyclists and those in opposing vehicles , the current data-driven approach to road safety misses that part of the story.

This can’t all be fixed at once. But by pursuing business as usual, automakers and traffic engineers will continue wasting money on victim-blaming campaigns or billboards placed high over a road telling drivers to pay attention to the road .

A better starting point would be remaking the U.S.’s allegedly data-driven approach to road safety by reinventing our understanding of the crash data that informs it all.

The key is starting to ask why. Why did these road users act as they did? Why didn’t they follow the rules that were laid out for them? Bad road user behavior shouldn’t be excused, but a bit of digging below the surface of crash data unearths a completely different story.

Figuring out which road user is most at fault may be useful for law enforcement and insurance companies, but it doesn’t give transportation engineers, planners, policymakers or automakers much insight into what they can do better. Even worse, it has kept them from realizing that they might be doing anything wrong.

MONTICELLO, Illinois -- I’ve decided to stop trying to converse with people. I rarely have a decent conversation anymore, and I think it’s time to put in place my own personal gag order.

In addition to the annoying distraction of the adult pacifier and constant interrupter — the cellphone — I have found that hardly anyone knows how to have a face-to-face chat that is both equal and engaged.

A typical confab often follows what I call “one upmanship,” or, “enough about you, let’s hurry back to me .” Someone might ask, “So, I heard you traveled to Vietnam last month.” My answer: “Yes, it was a trip of a lifetime.”

Normal responses could be: “Wow, what made it special?” Or, “Cool, what stood out the most?” Or, “What was the food like?”

Instead, I get: “You know my trip of a lifetime was to Branson last year when I saw the Terry Bradshaw show! Did you know he can sing? He’s got like a bunch of country albums!”

Or, “ I would never fly overseas. A friend got locked in the airplane’s bathroom on his way to Iceland. He’s now in counseling and can no longer use a public toilet without his therapy dog.”

At this point, I shut down. How did we just get from Hanoi to Terry Bradshaw’s musical career and the restroom habits of a skittish traveler? Why continue?

As a journalist, I have spent decades listening to people, knitting their narratives together without interjecting my thoughts. I have learned that the best interviews come from creating space. An interviewee might finish a story, and instead of jumping in immediately with another question, I often say nothing. That pause often elicits a deeper dive into the story. The subject might fill that space with another recollection: “Oh, I just remembered something ….”

I prepare for the interview, but I enter with few questions so that I’m not trapped with a rigid set of queries that interrupt the flow of the conversation. My subject might say, “I need to tell you that I did indeed, through a complex layer of illegal financial activities that I will now explain, rip off my family for millions of dollars.”

A bad interviewer would then look at her list of prepared questions and say, “So, tell me about growing up in Kansas.” Or, “What is your favorite color? And why?”

The lessons I have learned through my years as an underpaid, overlooked journalist can also apply to everyday off-the-record conversations: Stop interrupting. Listen.

Lately, the trend is to continue a conversation with a non sequitur.

Ponder this one. Me: “My father passed away while I was in Vietnam. I could not attend the memorial service.” Instead of offering condolences, the person I am sharing this sad news with might reply, “My uncle died 16 years ago. We used to go fishing.”

Another annoying talk trait is to avoid eye contact and, instead, steal glances at one’s phone that is attached to one’s hand like Velcro. We know that most of the messages testing our short attention spans are spam: We owe hundreds of dollars for a product we did not order sent from an email address that contains all 24 letters of our alphabet plus several from the Cyrillic alphabet. Perhaps it’s a reminder that, in only five months from now, we have a dental appointment.

But, rest assured, rarely are the missives on your phone better than the conversation you could be having.

I used to think, if I listened attentively to an acquaintance and asked after their family, their health or their pets, that eventually they might inquire the same about me. I no longer believe that. Now, when I’m in the middle of a one-sided conversation, my eyes glaze over. I withdraw to my inner happy place and try to imagine who is making my cellphone vibrate.
