Introduction:

Teachers are the ones who play a very vital role in shaping our future. From the Pre-Kinder Garden to your Post-Doctoral fellowships, they teach, impart knowledge, share ethical values, and imbibe morality, thereby shaping our personality as a strong one.

My Teacher:

Throughout our lives, we will be having many kith and kins who will hold a special place in our hearts. For me, one such person is my teacher. All of us, for sure, will definitely agree to the fact that the kinship between us and our kinder garden teachers could not be well-defined. I like my nursery teacher, so much. There is something very magical about her. Maybe, she was the first teacher in my life or maybe, she was very sweet in talking to all of us, I am unable to portray why she is always my favourite. I relied on her blindly.

Unforgettable Memories:

I have some cherished memories with my teacher. Whenever I think of those memories, it makes me blissful. On the last day of my nursery school, I started crying at the very thought of leaving her and having a new teacher. I had fallen sick due to crying for hours together. I skipped my food. My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

Conclusion:

Having a good teacher who can share an amalgamated relationship with the students is a boon. A good teacher should be a good mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend and above all a surrogate parent to the children. I am lucky that I had gotten one in my lifetime.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

In school, you tend to interact with a lot of people who can either impact your life positively or negatively. A teacher is one neutral person who will manage to strike a balance between the positive and the negative. Teachers have a huge responsibility that we students may not understand. All in all our teachers try their best to provide an education, guidance and discipline despite the challenges we might impose on them. The life of a student is entirely dependent on a teacher because most of their time is spent in school rather than with parents that is why teachers play a major role in shaping the lives of young children through school.

Who Is my favourite Teacher?

I have several teachers now that I am in high school but there is only one whom I can relate to as “the teacher” because of the impact he has made in my life. The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

How the teacher has impacted my life in school .

Mentorship goes along way depending on the approach used. When I first joined high school, I did not have much confidence in myself. This teacher mentored me and made me believe in myself. The good thing is the attention he gives t is students because most of the times, he follows up on the performances and ensures that he does everything he can to help students improve academically. He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. Through following his footsteps, I have been able to dedicate myself into studies and sports, which has helped me to achieve my goals.

In conclusion, good teachers are hard to find but when you find one, make the most out of them.

The word “teacher” depicts a person that teaches. English dictionary defines teacher as “a person who teaches, especially one employed in a school”. A more recent definition of teacher in the linguistics field is “a tutor that interacts with the learners in order to facilitate good learning”.

Types of Teachers

Old method teachers: the teachers found under this method adopt the rigid mode of impartation of knowledge. They control the class the way a king would rule over his subjects. Old method teachers are less concerned about the welfare of their learners, they are syllabus-oriented.

New method teachers: the tutors under this model are student-oriented. They are more concerned about their learners and their various levels of understanding. They accept and promote contributions in class unlike the old method teachers. New method teachers encourage the inquisitiveness of their students.

Attributes of a Teacher:

A standard teacher has all or most of the various characters imbedded in them:

  • Compassionate
  • Open-minded
  • A good counselor
  • Friendly and most importantly
  • Approachable.

Attributes of My Favorite Teacher:

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

In conclusion, my teacher has all the attributes and more of a new method teachers. He is capable of combining all modes of teaching, he is compassionate, passionate, and friendly. From my interactions with him, I can confidently say that he is one of the best teachers around.

“Although strictly speaking, based on the appointments I hold, I really do not have time to do much of it. I say teach, not lecturing. The lecturer steps up to the lectern and declaims her knowledge. She points out the difficulties in the area, she talks about solutions to problems, and she makes suggestions for reform. The focus is on the subject – the students follow. The teacher, however, needs to meet the students where they are in order to bring them to where they have to be. The focus is on the student’s ability.”

Koh writes about how he teaches, the difficulties of teaching, and what it means to be a teacher. He helps his students hone their skills and use them critically. On top of the standard class routine, being a teacher during the pandemic has entailed the burden of handling students who opt for remote learning. They are faced with additional struggles, including connection issues, complaining parents, and being overworked in general- it’s as if they teach twice the number of classes as normal. This is exhausting and may prove detrimental to the American education system, according to the sources Singer cites.

“What it means to me is that I am checking (or acknowledging) my privilege as a teacher in the space of the classroom and in order to facilitate a more equitable classroom community for my students, erasing one of the pillars of that inequity is a step in the right direction. I am comfortable in my role as the head member in my classroom, and I don’t need a teacher’s desk anymore to signify that.”

Morris, an educator, writes about what teaching means to him, highlighted by his decision to remove his teacher’s desk from his classroom. Being a teacher for him is about leading the discussion or being the “lead learner,” as he puts it, rather than being an instructor. His removal of the teacher’s desk was decided upon based on his desire to help his students feel more equal and at home in class. He believes that being a teacher means being able to foster authentic connections both for and with his students.

“Teachers want to help all students achieve, and the feeling of leaving any student behind is devastating. The pressure that they put on themselves to ensure that they serve all students can also contribute to the stress.”

Gomez writes about the stress that comes with being a teacher, largely due to time constraints, lack of resources, and the number of students they must instruct. As much as they want to help their students, their environment does not allow them to touch the lives of all students equally. They are extremely pressured to uphold certain standards of work, and while they try as hard as they can, they do not always succeed. As a result, many teachers have left the profession altogether. Gomez ends her piece with an invitation for teachers to read about other job opportunities.

“Then I re-evaluate what I want for myself, and what it is that keeps me working towards my dreams. Through the goals I’ve set for myself, I can maintain focus, move past my self-doubt and succeed. By focusing on my goals, I can make a difference in the world directly around me.”

Taken from a collection of short essays, England’s essay is about why she so desperately wishes to become a teacher. She was previously able to work as a teaching assistant to her former elementary school teacher, and enjoyed imparting new knowledge unto children. Even in moments of self-doubt, she reminds herself to be confident in her dreams and hopes to be able to make a difference in the world with her future profession.

Essay about being a teacher: What makes teaching so fulfilling?

When it comes to teachers, we often hear about either “the joy of teaching” or the immense stress that comes with it. You can explore the gratitude and satisfaction that teachers feel toward their jobs, even with all the struggles they face. Read or watch the news and interviews with teachers themselves.

Research on the skills and qualifications people need to be teachers, as well as any qualities they may need to do their job well. What skills can you get from teaching? What traits can you develop? What lessons can you learn?

Despite the seemingly endless barrage of stories about the difficulties that teachers face, many people still want to teach. You can explore the reasoning behind their decisions, and perhaps get some personal insight on being a teacher as well.

Based on what you know, would you recommend teaching as a job? If you aren’t too knowledgeable on this topic, you can use the essay examples provided as guides- they present both the positive and negative aspects of being a teacher. Be sure to support your argument with ample evidence- interviews, anecdotes, statistics, and the like.

Teachers, whether in a school setting or not, have almost certainly helped make you into the person you are now. You can discuss the impact that your teachers have had on your life, for better or for worse, and the importance of their roles as teachers in forming students for the future.

Long Essay on Teacher – Essay 7 (600 Words)

Introduction

A teacher is a person who signifies your presence on earth as a well-mannered and educated person. One who plays a silent role in your development, making you successful. As per Hindu manuscripts, a teacher is called as ‘Guru’, and a guru has been ranked supreme, even more, valuable than God, because s/he is the person who teaches the significance of God to us. So, we pray guru first.

Who is a Teacher?

A teacher can be any one, depending on the circumstances. When a child is born, s/he remains in the custody of his/her mother and during this period of time, s/he learns to speak, walk and do many other activities. If a person who teaches is called teacher, so it is his/her mother who taught him/her the basic things of life. His/Her mother can be called as his/her first teacher in fact; all of us have this in common.

Importance of a Teacher

While in school, teachers introduce you to some subjects and they develop your skills and interest in a particular one. It can be science, literature or other subjects like drawing, music etc. It is not that every child has super abilities; it is a teacher who points out your skills and helps you to develop them. A good teacher can turn a boring subject quite interesting. A teacher is always very important for us because he gives bookish as well as practical knowledge and sometimes practical knowledge is very important. Books can’t teach us everything and the point where books fail, the only person who can help us is our teacher. This shows the importance of teachers is in our life.

Who can be a Teacher?

For a new born baby, his/her mother is the best teacher whereas, for a student it can be his dance teacher or his/her maths teacher. Anyone who gives you knowledge and enhances your intelligence can be your teacher. An ant can also be your teacher because it teaches us to work hard continuously without losing hope. All this concludes that a teacher does not have a particular face or religion, who so ever in this world teaches you any kind of lesson, can be your teacher.

Generally, while thinking about teachers, we imagine about our school teachers, and all of us have our favourite one, who always encouraged and helped us to attain our goals. It was my English teacher who used to teach us in such a wonderful way, that I started loving literature and decided to make my carrier in this stream. He always encouraged my writing skills and helped me out to make them perfect. Today I am really thankful that he was my teacher.

Life is all about learning till the last breath and the person who has knowledge can be a good teacher. It needs lots of courage and knowledge to teach and be in this profession. When a teacher is in a class, he has to handle more than thirty students at once and all from different background and interest.

Just imagine when you alone could irritate your mother so much, then what about other thirty students like you; what would be the level of pressure on a teacher. Hats off to all the teachers and the students who chose teaching as a carrier to shape up the future of the young ones. At least they have chosen something daring and it will be not be wrong to say that a teacher builds the future of a nation.

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on Teachers’ Day

10 lines on teachers’ day, short essay on teachers’ day in english, long essay on teachers’ day for kids, what will your child learn from the essay on teachers’ day.

Teachers are the closest people in a child’s life outside their homes. Right from the moment they enter school on their very first day till the day they graduate, teachers play a central role in every child’s educational journey. They are responsible for inspiring students and shaping their futures. Therefore, it’s not surprising that children are very close to their teachers and love and respect them immensely. Children love celebrating Teachers’ Day in school. They show their appreciation, respect, and gratitude towards their teachers through various expressions on this day. Schools organise a grand celebration with various activities where children can participate. Teachers’ Day is thus a common topic assigned to children of lower primary classes for essay writing. Through this essay, students are expected to highlight the importance of teachers and share how they like to celebrate Teachers’ Day.

Teachers’ Day is celebrated in all schools to honour the contribution of teachers to the students’ lives. Children will have a lot of ideas about what to write on this topic. There are a few essential tips to remember when asked to write an essay on teachers. Here are some details that you can include:

  • Mention the date that Teachers’ day falls on.
  • Write why it is celebrated.
  • Write why it is important to celebrate Teachers’ day.
  • Describe the importance of teachers in students’ lives.
  • Write about various activities on Teachers’ day.

Right from the first day of school, a teacher is a child’s mentor in their studies, guardian away from home and a friendly guide for life. Lower primary class students are very excited about Teachers’ Day but are just about learning how to put down their feelings and ideas in words. It will help them to gather their thoughts and write them in simple sentences. Here is a sample essay on Teachers’ Day for class 1 & 2 students in 10 lines:

  • We celebrate Teachers’ Day in India on September 5.
  • It is celebrated to show our respect and gratitude for our teachers.
  • It is celebrated to mark Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishan’s birth anniversary.
  • International Teachers’ Day is celebrated in other parts of the world on October 5.
  • On this day, teachers are off-duty. Senior students come to school dressed up as teachers and take over the classes.
  • Teachers relax and enjoy the activities planned for them by the students.
  • In my school, we also perform skits and other cultural activities to showcase the importance of our teachers.
  • We also have a special assembly conducted by students.
  • We give small gifts to our teachers. I like to make greeting cards for all my favourite teachers to show love and gratitude.
  • Schools across India celebrate Teachers’ day with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal.

After writing an essay in simple lines, students will be expected to weave their ideas into small paragraphs to share their experiences on Teachers’ Day. For this short paragraph, they will have to include more details and facts in their essay, with a small introductory and concluding line.

Here is an example that will give your child some guidance:

From our first day at school all the way through college, teachers are the ones who guide us, educate us, and inspire us. They not only teach us but also make us better humans. Therefore, every year on September 5, we celebrate Teachers’ Day to honour our teachers. It is the most important event on the school calendar.

Teachers’ Day was first celebrated by students and colleagues of the former President of India, Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishan, to honour him on his birthday. Since then, it has been celebrated to honour and respect all teachers upon his humble insistence.

In our school, we have many cultural activities to celebrate this day. Students honour their teachers with flowers and gifts to express their gratitude. It is not just on this day, but every day, that we are grateful to our teachers for educating us and making us good human beings.

Class 3 students are expected to write longer essays and express their views articulately along with essential facts and knowledge. Therefore, students will have to memorise these facts while writing about their experiences creatively. Here is a sample of a long essay on Teachers’ Day essay for class 3 students:

We all know that Teachers’ Day is on September 5 and is celebrated with gusto. However, very few know that while it is celebrated on this day in India, the International Teacher Day is observed worldwide on October 5. Teachers’ Day in India is celebrated to honour Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second president of India who was an incredible teacher. His students wanted to celebrate Teachers’ Day on his birthday to honour him and show their respect for him. However, Dr Radhakrishnan suggested honouring all teachers instead, and his birthday started being celebrated across the country to commemorate teachers and their importance in shaping students’ lives.

The future of every society and country lies in the hands of the children. And teachers are the ones that nurture, educate, and shape the future of these children who grow up and make a better society and country. They not only impart education but also guide children to become better humans. Therefore, every year Teachers’ day is celebrated in all schools, colleges, and educational institutions with fervour and enthusiasm. It is a day dedicated to teachers who work hard to ensure their students learn well and excel in school and life. Teachers have a powerful impact on students’ lives and minds. Therefore they have always been respected and held in high regard. On Teachers’ Day, students express that regard and gratitude through various activities.

In my school, senior class students dress and act as their favourite teachers for one day. They conduct the assembly, take classes, and organise various activities for teachers. We have speeches and skits that show the importance of teachers in our lives. We also present dances and sing songs dedicated to our teachers. In our school, we also have performances like fancy dress competitions on this day. Teachers get a day off from their responsibilities and enjoy these acts. There are fun games played with our teachers in one team opposite us students in the other team. We also shower our teachers with love by giving them cards, flowers, and presents to express our love, respect and gratitude. The day is all about teachers and making them feel special. Though we dedicate just one single day of the year to celebrate our teachers, we appreciate and acknowledge their efforts and dedication every day of our life.

Teachers’ day is an introductory essay for students of lower primary classes. For students, teachers are the most important part of their educational lives. Therefore writing an essay for grade 1, 2 & 3 students on Teachers’ day encourages them to express their love and gratitude towards their teachers. From academic and moral aspects, teachers are the guiding light for their students. Through an essay on Teacher’s day, your child will learn and understand the role of teachers in their lives, and appreciate their efforts in their education. This exercise also allows your child to observe and express the activities around them. Gathering facts about the history of Teachers’ Day will improve your child’s general knowledge.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language: Experiences Essay

  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)

Teachers hold a critical but significantly undervalued purpose in modern society. With the wider availability of information and developing communication technology, the perception and role of teachers are rapidly changing. There are various challenges as well as rewards that are inherent to the job. In order to grow and improve as a teacher and a person, it is essential to reflect on my personal feelings and education practices that define them as a unique instructor.

Being a teacher is a lot of responsibility and accountability. Those with any experience of education realize that the job requires not only the mastery of the subject being taught but also an understanding of human psychology, necessity to maintain self-control, and upkeeping utmost organization. To be honest, it is overwhelming and exhausting at times. However, the job brings incredible satisfaction and tremendous pride in the profession. There is the excitement of planning and executing projects with your class or taking advantage of a new teaching method that a more experienced educator has shared. The most rewarding moment is seeing a student’s eyes light up after comprehending a complicated topic that they have struggled with and finally understanding how a concept works.

I have had a variety of teaching experiences, ranging from working as a tutor to coaching tennis. In each position, there were nuances and learning curves in the teaching process and approach to students. However, once I became accustomed to the job, it became a passion. The famous maxim attributed to Confucius, “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” applies to my experience with teaching. The profession fits with my identity of helping people and giving back to the community. Good teaching is more than a simple transfer of information and skill. It is based on empowerment and support for students, as a teacher can provide the opportunity and confidence to apply their knowledge. I believe that teaching fits perfectly with my caring and supportive character that seeks to empower others to achieve their objectives.

Through this course, I have been able to learn about a wide variety of practices for teaching English as a foreign language. Linguistics can be quite difficult, and it requires an approach that would maintain student interest and encourage participation. Some of the sessions in the course that focused on needs analysis and exploiting dialogue are techniques that can be tactically applied in a learning environment. They increase participation and student awareness of the practicality for their knowledge of English. The use of “do-it-yourself” grammar lessons that encourage independent thinking and utilization of learned knowledge is an effective method to support the difficult acquisition of English grammar. Furthermore, I would like to practice certain techniques such as gamification or the “teach-back” approach that would provide some diversification to traditional instruction methods and would be used to reinforce specific concepts.

I believe that there are no wrong teaching methods. In a real-life classroom situation, one can never know what particular approach can be helpful for individual students to understand a concept. However, there are some aspects that I believe would be inappropriate in teaching English as a foreign language. For example, relying on self-learning as the foundation for language learning (as it is commonly done in many college courses) is ineffective since it would discourage the systematic approach necessary in linguistics. Furthermore, I believe that placing students in situations where they would feel forced or uncomfortable to perform dialogues should be done with caution to prevent discouragement. Language acquisition is a long-term process which should occur naturally and supported by the classroom teaching methodology.

Overall, teaching is my passion, and I look forward to being able to practice it on a daily basis. Participation in the Peace Corps teaching program will also provide me with an opportunity to make a difference in the world and empower individuals with knowledge of critical language skills. Despite the possible challenges that come with the position, I remain optimistic as it will help to contribute to my personal growth as well.

Teacher’s Day Essay for Students in English

The teacher’s day is to honor and appreciate teachers for their dedication and hard work. Because teachers play a great role in everyone’s life. From teaching science and languages to giving life-long lessons, teachers help us build ourselves in every field of life. Therefore, they deserve to be honored. So, we should at least dedicate a day to thank them for everything that they do for us. With that being said, in the article below, we have written a teacher’s day essay and we have listed some best teacher’s day quotes for you to add icing on top of the cake.

Teacher’s Day

Teacher’s day is a very special occasion for students, teachers, and everyone in general. Every year students celebrate teacher’s day on the 5th of September to honor teachers and pay tribute to their dedication and hard work. In India, 5th September is celebrated as teacher’s day as a reminder of one of the greatest teachers, in Indian history, Dr. Servepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth. Dr. Radhakrishnan was also the second president of India besides being a great mentor. On this special occasion, students present their best wishes and respect to their teachers. They also give cards, flowers, gifts, and write a teacher’s day essay for their favorite teacher to express their love. Among all, writing a special teacher’s day essay for their favorite teacher is most appreciable.

Moreover, on this day, students organize teacher’s day events that include inspirational acts, singing competitions, speeches, and debates to make their teachers feel proud and honored. Students also dress up as teachers, on this special day, and perform.

It is indeed true that there is no other profession as honorable as the profession of teaching. And it is the most respectable profession in the world. September 5 was dedicated to the teaching profession by celebrating this day as Teachers’ Day across India. It is celebrated annually to commemorate the birthday of one of the greatest teachers in Indian history and former President of India, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, as well as to honor teachers. India’s former president’s birthday was dedicated to highlighting the nobility of the teaching profession and the contributions of our teachers to society and the development of the country.

In the life of a student, a teacher reserves a place above the parents. Parents give birth to and care for their children while teachers create their future. Only teachers make children successful in their lives. A good teacher can lead children to limitless heights of success in life. Besides, teaching is a prophetic profession. Because teachers disperse knowledge which is the most precious thing ever found. Knowledge shows us the right path and enables us to distinguish right from wrong. Moreover, teachers are a source of inspiration and guidance for students. It is rightly said that “The mediocre master tells, the good master explains, the superior master demonstrates and the great master inspires”. Masters inspire students with diligence, hard work, and dedication.

Moreover, there is no doubt that teachers are like real potters who not only shape our lives but also allow us to light ourselves like a lamp forever after dispelling darkness from all over the world. So that our nation can be illuminated with many luminous lamps. Therefore, we pay homage and respect to all teachers in the country on this honorable day. However, we cannot give our teachers anything in return for their excellent work; we must always respect them and be grateful for their hard work and dedication. Besides, we must make a commitment to respect and wholeheartedly honor our teachers in our daily lives. Because without a good teacher we are all incomplete in this world.

In conclusion, we need to realize the need and importance of teachers in our lives and celebrate Teachers’ Day every year to honor them for their great work. Teachers are more than our parents who shape our minds for success in every field of life. Besides, they only become happy and successful in life if their dedicated students go ahead and spread the name of teachers all over the world through our activities and by reflecting back on all the lessons that we learned from our teachers. Thus, we should follow all the good lessons in our life taught by our teachers.

P LANNING, PARAGRAPHING AND POLISHING: FINE-TUNING THE PERFECT ESSAY

Essay writing is an essential skill for every student. Whether writing a particular academic essay (such as persuasive, narrative, descriptive, or expository) or a timed exam essay, the key to getting good at writing is to write. Creating opportunities for our students to engage in extended writing activities will go a long way to helping them improve their skills as scribes.

But, putting the hours in alone will not be enough to attain the highest levels in essay writing. Practice must be meaningful. Once students have a broad overview of how to structure the various types of essays, they are ready to narrow in on the minor details that will enable them to fine-tune their work as a lean vehicle of their thoughts and ideas.

Visual Writing

In this article, we will drill down to some aspects that will assist students in taking their essay writing skills up a notch. Many ideas and activities can be integrated into broader lesson plans based on essay writing. Often, though, they will work effectively in isolation – just as athletes isolate physical movements to drill that are relevant to their sport. When these movements become second nature, they can be repeated naturally in the context of the game or in our case, the writing of the essay.

Planning an essay

essay writing | how to prepare for an essay | Essay Writing: A complete guide for students and teachers | literacyideas.com

The Boys Scouts’ motto is famously ‘Be Prepared’. It’s a solid motto that can be applied to most aspects of life; essay writing is no different. Given the purpose of an essay is generally to present a logical and reasoned argument, investing time in organising arguments, ideas, and structure would seem to be time well spent.

Given that essays can take a wide range of forms and that we all have our own individual approaches to writing, it stands to reason that there will be no single best approach to the planning stage of essay writing. That said, there are several helpful hints and techniques we can share with our students to help them wrestle their ideas into a writable form. Let’s take a look at a few of the best of these:

BREAK THE QUESTION DOWN: UNDERSTAND YOUR ESSAY TOPIC.

Whether students are tackling an assignment that you have set for them in class or responding to an essay prompt in an exam situation, they should get into the habit of analyzing the nature of the task. To do this, they should unravel the question’s meaning or prompt. Students can practice this in class by responding to various essay titles, questions, and prompts, thereby gaining valuable experience breaking these down.

Have students work in groups to underline and dissect the keywords and phrases and discuss what exactly is being asked of them in the task. Are they being asked to discuss, describe, persuade, or explain? Understanding the exact nature of the task is crucial before going any further in the planning process, never mind the writing process .

BRAINSTORM AND MIND MAP WHAT YOU KNOW:

Once students have understood what the essay task asks them, they should consider what they know about the topic and, often, how they feel about it. When teaching essay writing, we so often emphasize that it is about expressing our opinions on things, but for our younger students what they think about something isn’t always obvious, even to themselves.

Brainstorming and mind-mapping what they know about a topic offers them an opportunity to uncover not just what they already know about a topic, but also gives them a chance to reveal to themselves what they think about the topic. This will help guide them in structuring their research and, later, the essay they will write . When writing an essay in an exam context, this may be the only ‘research’ the student can undertake before the writing, so practicing this will be even more important.

RESEARCH YOUR ESSAY

The previous step above should reveal to students the general direction their research will take. With the ubiquitousness of the internet, gone are the days of students relying on a single well-thumbed encyclopaedia from the school library as their sole authoritative source in their essay. If anything, the real problem for our students today is narrowing down their sources to a manageable number. Students should use the information from the previous step to help here. At this stage, it is important that they:

●      Ensure the research material is directly relevant to the essay task

●      Record in detail the sources of the information that they will use in their essay

●      Engage with the material personally by asking questions and challenging their own biases

●      Identify the key points that will be made in their essay

●      Group ideas, counterarguments, and opinions together

●      Identify the overarching argument they will make in their own essay.

Once these stages have been completed the student is ready to organise their points into a logical order.

WRITING YOUR ESSAY

There are a number of ways for students to organize their points in preparation for writing. They can use graphic organizers , post-it notes, or any number of available writing apps. The important thing for them to consider here is that their points should follow a logical progression. This progression of their argument will be expressed in the form of body paragraphs that will inform the structure of their finished essay.

The number of paragraphs contained in an essay will depend on a number of factors such as word limits, time limits, the complexity of the question etc. Regardless of the essay’s length, students should ensure their essay follows the Rule of Three in that every essay they write contains an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Generally speaking, essay paragraphs will focus on one main idea that is usually expressed in a topic sentence that is followed by a series of supporting sentences that bolster that main idea. The first and final sentences are of the most significance here with the first sentence of a paragraph making the point to the reader and the final sentence of the paragraph making the overall relevance to the essay’s argument crystal clear.

Though students will most likely be familiar with the broad generic structure of essays, it is worth investing time to ensure they have a clear conception of how each part of the essay works, that is, of the exact nature of the task it performs. Let’s review:

Common Essay Structure

Introduction: Provides the reader with context for the essay. It states the broad argument that the essay will make and informs the reader of the writer’s general perspective and approach to the question.

Body Paragraphs: These are the ‘meat’ of the essay and lay out the argument stated in the introduction point by point with supporting evidence.

Conclusion: Usually, the conclusion will restate the central argument while summarising the essay’s main supporting reasons before linking everything back to the original question.

ESSAY WRITING PARAGRAPH WRITING TIPS

essay writing | 1 How to write paragraphs | Essay Writing: A complete guide for students and teachers | literacyideas.com

●      Each paragraph should focus on a single main idea

●      Paragraphs should follow a logical sequence; students should group similar ideas together to avoid incoherence

●      Paragraphs should be denoted consistently; students should choose either to indent or skip a line

●      Transition words and phrases such as alternatively , consequently , in contrast should be used to give flow and provide a bridge between paragraphs.

HOW TO EDIT AN ESSAY

essay writing | essay editing tips | Essay Writing: A complete guide for students and teachers | literacyideas.com

Students shouldn’t expect their essays to emerge from the writing process perfectly formed. Except in exam situations and the like, thorough editing is an essential aspect in the writing process.

Often, students struggle with this aspect of the process the most. After spending hours of effort on planning, research, and writing the first draft, students can be reluctant to go back over the same terrain they have so recently travelled. It is important at this point to give them some helpful guidelines to help them to know what to look out for. The following tips will provide just such help:

One Piece at a Time: There is a lot to look out for in the editing process and often students overlook aspects as they try to juggle too many balls during the process. One effective strategy to combat this is for students to perform a number of rounds of editing with each focusing on a different aspect. For example, the first round could focus on content, the second round on looking out for word repetition (use a thesaurus to help here), with the third attending to spelling and grammar.

Sum It Up: When reviewing the paragraphs they have written, a good starting point is for students to read each paragraph and attempt to sum up its main point in a single line. If this is not possible, their readers will most likely have difficulty following their train of thought too and the paragraph needs to be overhauled.

Let It Breathe: When possible, encourage students to allow some time for their essay to ‘breathe’ before returning to it for editing purposes. This may require some skilful time management on the part of the student, for example, a student rush-writing the night before the deadline does not lend itself to effective editing. Fresh eyes are one of the sharpest tools in the writer’s toolbox.

Read It Aloud: This time-tested editing method is a great way for students to identify mistakes and typos in their work. We tend to read things more slowly when reading aloud giving us the time to spot errors. Also, when we read silently our minds can often fill in the gaps or gloss over the mistakes that will become apparent when we read out loud.

Phone a Friend: Peer editing is another great way to identify errors that our brains may miss when reading our own work. Encourage students to partner up for a little ‘you scratch my back, I scratch yours’.

Use Tech Tools: We need to ensure our students have the mental tools to edit their own work and for this they will need a good grasp of English grammar and punctuation. However, there are also a wealth of tech tools such as spellcheck and grammar checks that can offer a great once-over option to catch anything students may have missed in earlier editing rounds.

essay writing | Perfect essay writing for students | Essay Writing: A complete guide for students and teachers | literacyideas.com

Putting the Jewels on Display: While some struggle to edit, others struggle to let go. There comes a point when it is time for students to release their work to the reader. They must learn to relinquish control after the creation is complete. This will be much easier to achieve if the student feels that they have done everything in their control to ensure their essay is representative of the best of their abilities and if they have followed the advice here, they should be confident they have done so.

My Teacher Essay in English for Class 1 Students

Essay on my teacher for class 1 students.

Writing an essay involves a lot of thinking. Hence essay writing is considered as one of the most efficient ways to teach a kid how to think critically, use creativity, and jot down thoughts in one place. Learning essay writing at such a young age will help the kids to assess their thinking power and writing skills.

Here our experts have put their best efforts to bring forth the essay on ’My

Teacher,’ so that you can help your child in learning how to write a short essay about ‘My Teacher’ for Class 1.

Short Essay on “My Teacher”

A teacher is the builder of the nation and shows light to our future. Teaching is a

noble profession. They educate us and help us to become responsible citizens. I am a student of Class 1 and my favourite teacher in the school is Anita ma’am. Her full name is Anita Thakkar. She is our class teacher and teaches us English.

She is very sweet, jovial, and kind-hearted. She teaches well. We keep quiet when she teaches. She makes sure we understand the subject well. If we do not understand any topic, she explains it again very nicely. Her teaching and presentation skills are really good. That’s why it is easier to understand every chapter. I never miss her class. She guides us and teaches us good habits. She is strict but lovely. That’s why we are very fond of her and love to attend her class.

Sometimes she tells us stories as well. On any special occasion, she gives us cakes and chocolates. We also bring a cake for ma’am on our birthdays. Last year we celebrated her birthday also. I gifted her a drawing of mine. She was really happy. We feel very lucky being taught by Anitama’am. We are proud of our class teacher. A lot of her students are quite successful today. We also wish to be her successful students in the future.

I think the best teacher is a gift of God to us. We always thank God for blessing us with a good teacher like Anita ma’am.

Long Essay on “My Teacher”

A teacher is a person who plays a very important role in casting a student’s life. A teacher has so many different roles to perform in the student’s life such as guru, guardian, instructor, and guide and mentor who delivers knowledge about the value of life. He or she also provides information regarding subjects and inspires as well as motivates us to take education for getting success in life.

I am a student of Class 1 and my teacher’s name is Ms Reena Shah. She teaches us English. She is such a friendly and kind-hearted teacher. She teaches the subject in a play-way method that we enjoy in her class. At the time of her class, every student seats quietly on their benches.

She explains the chapter in simple language so that all students can understand the lesson very easily. If we get stuck on some topic or get confused she clears our doubt by explaining the topic again with the proper answer. Her teaching style and presentation style is very good. She never gets angry if we ask her lots of questions.

Every student in my class waits for her period excitedly. She also teaches us and guides us on good things and good manners. Though she is strict regarding the classwork and homework she is a very lovely teacher. During the time of Christmas or on special occasions she always brings chocolate for us.

Every teacher is a great belonging to our nation. That is why on 5 September of every year we celebrate “Teacher’s Day” to give thanks to our teachers for teaching us different sides of life.  I am feeling lucky to be taught by Ms Reena.

In my point of view, the best gift that God has given to students is “Teacher.”

One of my favourite teachers is Anjali Gaba. She teaches my class and checks attendance each morning. Despite being stern, Anjali ma’am has a great sense of humour and compassion. She is organised and reliable. She completes all her class-related tasks and assignments on schedule. Anjali ma’am makes difficult concepts simple to understand and learn, which is why I admire her so much. She instructs us in English. While teaching, Anjali ma’am frequently cracks jokes to keep us entertained. My Best Teacher Essay

200 Words Essay On My Best Teacher

Teachers play a huge role in helping a child shape their personality . A huge chunk of the knowledge and values one holds comes from their teachers.

My Best Teacher

In the entire school, Nilam ma’am is my favourite teacher. She instructs me in EVS when I am in fourth grade (Environmental Studies) class. Our teacher is very caring and teaches in simple ways. She doesn't take studying too seriously and engages us in fun activities while instructing. Because I am a very responsible and ideal student, she loves me very much. I always do my classwork and homework in a tidy manner per her instructions.

In her class, I'm always attentive and reach the class on time. She inspires us to always choose the correct course in life, even when we have to deal with highly challenging circumstances. Our teacher teaches us to always look for simple solutions to our problems rather than giving up when things get tough. She also advises us to constantly think positively since what we believe and do always come to pass. All of the EVS concepts are explained by the teacher exceptionally thoroughly. In her class, she wants us to speak only English. She rides on the school bus with us, and we enjoy singing songs and reciting poetry as we travel to her home.

500 Words Essay On My Best Teacher

A teacher plays a significant role throughout all stages of life. Teachers impart life’s important values to students. Since teachers know that not every student has the same learning capacity, they carefully assess each student's potential before beginning lessons. A teacher is an excellent communicator of wisdom , fortune, and light, from whom we can learn much and benefit significantly throughout our lives.

My science teacher is one of my favourite professors. Her name is Mousumi Banerjee. She is the best teacher at the school and well-liked by all of my friends because she teaches very well.I appreciate her in-class teaching methods. She tell us to study the material she will cover in class the following day at home. The teacher explains the subject to the students and solicits any clarifications. The next day, she asked more questions on the same topic. This helps us understand a particular subject in great detail.

After covering two or three topics, she takes a test. She is passionate and enthusiastic about what they do and it shows in the way they teach us. She treats us with friendliness and never permits fear in us. Without hesitation, any student in the class or her cabin may ask her any question about the topic. While instructing the class, the teacher keeps an eye on every student's activity and disciplines the misbehaving ones. If you truly want success in life, she advises us to focus on our studies and always do as our teacher instructs. She never shows bias in the classroom between any of the students.

Her Importance In My Life

Mousumi ma'am has always been an important person in my life. She helped me select every course of action at various times. She gave me immense knowledge, skills, and positive behaviour expectations so I never felt lost. She always disciplined me and helped me throughout my life, even after school. In class 12th, I did a project under her in which she helped me immensely. It was a very successful project, and we won the 1st prize at the annual technical fest. That year she also got voted as the best teacher for that year. I was very happy for her as well. During my course selection for college, she guided me a lot. She helped me understand which course would be the best for me and sometimes helped me with those subjects.

She was always like a blessing in disguise for me.

A Special Moment In My Life

Last year on teacher's day, I, along with my classmates, gave her a surprise visit at her house and gifted her some chocolates as she loved chocolates. We also gave her a diary and a parker pen. She was delighted and almost burst into tears with happiness. We all had a wonderful time and then went for lunch in the nearby restaurant. It was a special moment for me as well as my friends.

We all have had teachers in our lives who have had a genuine impact on how we live. Every student has a unique space designated in their heart for their professors. There is no substitute for a teacher in a student's life. They give of themselves to make our lives successful.

  • Education and parenting essays
  • Technology essays
  • Pop culture essays
  • Historical and political essays
  • Sports essays
  • Lifestyle essays
  • Healthcare essays
  • Animal essays

When choosing a compare and contrast essay example to include on this list, we considered the structure. Next, the body includes paragraphs that explore the similarities and differences. Finally, a concluding paragraph restates the thesis, draws any necessary inferences, and asks any remaining questions.

A compare and contrast essay example can be an opinion piece comparing two things and making a conclusion about which is better. For example, “Is Tom Brady really the GOAT?” It can also help consumers decide which product is better suited to them. Should you keep your subscription to Hulu or Netflix? Should you stick with Apple or explore Android? Here’s our list of compare and contrast essay samples categorized by subject.

Education and Parenting Compare and Contrast Essay Examples

Private school vs. public school.

Sample lines: “Deciding whether to send a child to public or private school can be a tough choice for parents. … Data on whether public or private education is better can be challenging to find and difficult to understand, and the cost of private school can be daunting. … According to the most recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics, public schools still attract far more students than private schools, with 50.7 million students attending public school as of 2018. Private school enrollment in the fall of 2017 was 5.7 million students, a number that is down from 6 million in 1999.”

Homeschool vs. Public School: How Home Schooling Will Change Public Education

Homeschool vs. Public School: How Home Schooling Will Change Public Education

Sample lines: “Home schooling, not a present threat to public education, is nonetheless one of the forces that will change it. If the high estimates of the number of children in home schools (1.2 million) is correct, then the home-schooling universe is larger than the New York City public school system and roughly the size of the Los Angeles and Chicago public school systems combined. … Critics charge that three things are wrong with home schooling: harm to students academically; harm to society by producing students who are ill-prepared to function as democratic citizens and participants in a modern economy; and harm to public education, making it more difficult for other parents to educate their children. … It is time to ask whether home schooling, charters, and vouchers should be considered parts of a broad repertoire of methods that we as a society use to educate our children.”

Masked Education? The Benefits and Burdens of Wearing Face Masks in Schools During the Pandemic

Sample lines: “Face masks can prevent the spread of the virus SARS-CoV-2. … However, covering the lower half of the face reduces the ability to communicate. Positive emotions become less recognizable, and negative emotions are amplified. Emotional mimicry, contagion, and emotionality in general are reduced and (thereby) bonding between teachers and learners, group cohesion, and learning—of which emotions are a major driver. The benefits and burdens of face masks in schools should be seriously considered and made obvious and clear to teachers and students.”

To Ban or Not: What Should We Really Make of Book Bans?

To Ban or Not: What Should We Really Make of Book Bans?

Sample lines: “In recent years, book bans have soared in schools, reaching an all-time high in fall 2022. … The challenge of balancing parent concerns about ‘age appropriateness’ against the imperative of preparing students to be informed citizens is still on the minds of many educators today. … Such curricular decision-making  should  be left to the professionals, argues English/language arts instructional specialist Miriam Plotinsky. ‘Examining texts for their appropriateness is not a job that noneducators are trained to do,’ she wrote last year, as the national debate over censorship resurged with the news that a Tennessee district banned the graphic novel  Maus  just days before Holocaust Remembrance Day.”

It also boasts a much larger subscription base, with more than 222 million subscribers compared to Hulu’s 44 million. Hulu, on the other hand, offers a variety of extras such as HBO and Showtime—content that’s unavailable on Netflix. Kindle vs. Hardcover: Which is easier on the eyes?

Sample lines: “In the past, we would have to drag around heavy books if we were really into reading. Now, we can have all of those books, and many more, stored in one handy little device that can easily be stuffed into a backpack, purse, etc. … Many of us still prefer to hold an actual book in our hands. … But, whether you use a Kindle or prefer hardcover books or paperbacks, the main thing is that you enjoy reading. A story in a book or on a Kindle device can open up new worlds, take you to fantasy worlds, educate you, entertain you, and so much more.”

For those unfamiliar, cord cutting is the process of canceling your cable subscription and instead, relying on streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu to watch your favorite shows and movies. PS5 vs. Nintendo Switch

PS5 vs. Nintendo Switch

Sample lines: “The crux of the comparison comes down to portability versus power. Being able to migrate fully fledged Nintendo games from a big screen to a portable device is a huge asset—and one that consumers have taken to, especially given the Nintendo Switch’s meteoric sales figures. … It is worth noting that many of the biggest franchises like Call of Duty, Madden, modern Resident Evil titles, newer Final Fantasy games, Grand Theft Auto, and open-world Ubisoft adventures like Assassin’s Creed will usually skip Nintendo Switch due to its lack of power. The inability to play these popular games practically guarantees that a consumer will pick up a modern system, while using the Switch as a secondary device.”

Like the previous film, The Grinch hatches a plan to ruin Christmas for the Who’s. … Like in the original Grinch, he disguises himself as Santa Claus, and makes his dog, Max, into a reindeer. On the other hand, artificial grass is generally longer, softer and more suited to landscaping purposes. Most homeowners would opt for artificial grass as a replacement for a lawn, for example. Some people actually prefer playing sports on artificial grass, too … artificial grass is often softer and more bouncy, giving it a feel similar to playing on a grassy lawn. … At the end of the day, which one you will choose will depend on your specific household and needs.”

Minimalism vs. Maximalism: Differences, Similarities, and Use Cases- compare and contrast essay example

Sample lines: “Maximalists love shopping, especially finding unique pieces. They see it as a hobby—even a skill—and a way to express their personality. Minimalists don’t like shopping and see it as a waste of time and money. They’d instead use those resources to create memorable experiences. Maximalists desire one-of-a-kind possessions. Minimalists are happy with duplicates—for example, personal uniforms. … Minimalism and maximalism are about being intentional with your life and belongings. It’s about making choices based on what’s important to you.”

Vegetarian vs. Meat Eating: Is It Better To Be a Vegetarian?

Sample lines: “You’ve heard buzz over the years that following a vegetarian diet is better for your health, and you’ve probably read a few magazine articles featuring a celeb or two who swore off meat and animal products and ‘magically’ lost weight. So does ditching meat automatically equal weight loss? Will it really help you live longer and be healthier overall? … Vegetarians appear to have lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure  and lower rates of hypertension and type 2 diabetes than meat eaters. Vegetarians also tend to have a lower body mass index, lower overall cancer rates and lower risk of chronic disease. But if your vegetarian co-worker is noshing greasy veggie burgers and fries every day for lunch, is he likely to be healthier than you, who always orders the grilled salmon? Definitely not!”

A thank-you can go a long way. In our busy lives, we have come to forget expressing gratitude. Many studies have come up explaining the benefits that gratitude can have on the one who expresses it and on the one who receives it. We can take this opportunity as a day to thank our teachers and express our love and care for them.

  • We can suggest and provide assistance by making use of the skills that we have learned over these years.
  • Also, we can give them a visit on this day and share with them our experiences. This will for sure make them happy and proud of their efforts.
  • We can present a small token of appreciation, something that they could keep as a memory like a pen or a planner or something that would be useful for them.
  • We should also seek their blessings and let them know that we are always there for them when they need us.
  • Students can collectively gift them books and other materials and organize a get-together especially if the class has graduated.

Time spent with them and gratitude expressed would be a great gesture to make teachers happy and proud. It is very important to recognize their contribution to molding our personality.

Teachers play an important role in the development of any country . This is why it is vital to set aside a day when the teachers are given the recognition they deserve. California schools are using more chatbots, and teachers are using them to grade papers and give students feedback.

Lea esta historia en Español

Your children could be some of a growing number of California kids having their writing graded by software instead of a teacher.

California school districts are signing more contracts for artificial intelligence tools, from automated grading in San Diego to chatbots in central California, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

English teachers say AI tools can help them grade papers faster, get students more feedback, and improve their learning experience. But guidelines are vague and adoption by teachers and districts is spotty.

The California Department of Education can’t tell you which schools use AI or how much they pay for it. The state doesn’t track AI use by school districts, said Katherine Goyette, computer science coordinator for the California Department of Education.

While Goyette said chatbots are the most common form of AI she’s encountered in schools, more and more California teachers are using AI tools to help grade student work. That’s consistent with surveys that have found teachers use AI as often if not more than students , news that contrasts sharply with headlines about fears of students cheating with AI.

Teachers use AI to do things like personalize reading material, create lesson plans, and other tasks in order to save time and reduce burnout . A report issued last fall in response to an AI executive order by Gov. Gavin Newsom mentions opportunities to use AI for tutoring, summarization, and personalized content generation, but also labels education a risky use case. Generative AI tools have been known to create convincing but inaccurate answers to questions, and use toxic language or imagery laden with racism or sexism.

California issued guidance for how educators should use the technology last fall, one of seven states to do so. It encourages critical analysis of text and imagery created by AI models and conversations between teachers and students about what amounts to ethical or appropriate use of AI in the classroom.

But no specific mention is made of how teachers should treat AI that grades assignments. Additionally, the California education code states that guidance from the state is “merely exemplary, and that compliance with the guidelines is not mandatory.”

Goyette said she’s waiting to see if the California Legislature passes Senate Bill 1288 , which would require state Superintendent Tony Thurmond to create an AI working group to issue further guidance to local school districts on how to safely use AI. Cosponsored by Thurmond, the bill also calls for an assessment of the current state of AI in education and for the identification of forms of AI that can harm students and educators by 2026.

Nobody tracks what AI tools school districts are adopting or the policy they use to enforce standards, said Alix Gallagher, head of strategic partnerships at the Policy Analysis for California Education center at Stanford University. Since the state does not track curriculum that school districts adopt or software in use, it would be highly unusual for them to track AI contracts, she said.

Amid AI hype, Gallagher thinks people can lose sight of the fact that the technology is just a tool and it will only be as good or problematic as the decisions of the humans using that tool, which is why she repeatedly urges investments in helping teachers understand AI tools and how to be thoughtful about their use and making space for communities are given voice about how to best meet their kid’s needs.

“Some people will probably make some pretty bad decisions that are not in the best interests of kids, and some other people might find ways to use maybe even the same tools to enrich student experiences,” she said.

Teachers use AI to grade English papers

Last summer, Jen Roberts, an English teacher at Point Loma High School in San Diego, went to a training session to learn how to use Writable, an AI tool that automates grading writing assignments and gives students feedback powered by OpenAI. For the past school year, Roberts used Writable and other AI tools in the classroom, and she said it’s been the best year yet of nearly three decades of teaching. Roberts said it has made her students better writers, not because AI did the writing for them, but because automated feedback can tell her students faster than she can how to improve, which in turn allows her to hand out more writing assignments.

“At this point last year, a lot of students were still struggling to write a paragraph, let alone an essay with evidence and claims and reasoning and explanation and elaboration and all of that,” Roberts said. “This year, they’re just getting there faster.”

Roberts feels Writable is “very accurate” when grading her students of average aptitude. But, she said, there’s a downside: It sometimes assigns high-performing students lower grades than merited and struggling students higher grades. She said she routinely checks answers when the AI grades assignments, but only checks the feedback it gives students occasionally.

“In actual practicality, I do not look at the feedback it gives every single student,” she said. “That’s just not a great use of my time. But I do a lot of spot checking and I see what’s going on and if I see a student that I’m worried about get feedback, (I’m like) ‘Let me go look at what his feedback is and then go talk to him about that.’”

Alex Rainey teaches English to fourth graders at Chico Country Day School in northern California. She used GPT-4, a language model made by OpenAI which costs $20 a month, to grade papers and provide feedback. After uploading her grading rubric and examples of her written feedback, she used AI to grade assignments about animal defense mechanisms, allowing GPT-4 to analyze students’ grammar and sentence structure while she focused on assessing creativity.

“I feel like the feedback it gave was very similar to how I grade my kids, like my brain was tapped into it,” she said.

Like Roberts she found that it saves time, transforming work that took hours into less than an hour, but also found that sometimes GPT-4 is a tougher grader than she is. She agrees that quicker feedback and the ability to dole out more writing assignments produces better writers. A teacher can assign more writing before delivering feedback but “then kids have nothing to grow from.”

Rainey said her experience grading with GPT-4 left her in agreement with Roberts, that more feedback and writing more often produces better writers. She feels strongly that teachers still need to oversee grading and feedback by AI, “but I think it’s amazing. I couldn’t go backwards now.”

The cost of using AI in the classroom

Contracts involving artificial intelligence can be lucrative.

To launch a chatbot named Ed, Los Angeles Unified School District signed a $6.2 million contract for two years with the option of renewing for three additional years. Magic School AI is used by educators in Los Angeles and costs $100 per teacher per year.

Despite repeated calls and emails over the span of roughly a month, Writable and the San Diego Unified School District declined to share pricing details with CalMatters. A district spokesperson said teachers got access to Writeable through a contract with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for English language learners.

Quill is an AI-powered writing tool for students in grades 4-12 made by the company Quill. Quill says its tool is currently used at 1,000 schools in California and has more than 13,000 student and educator users in San Diego alone. An annual Quill Premium subscription costs $80 per teacher or $1800 per school.

Quill does not generate writing for students like ChatGPT or grade writing assignments, but gives students feedback on their writing. Quill is a nonprofit that’s raised $20 million from groups like Google’s charitable foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation over the past 10 years.

Even if a teacher or district wants to shell out for an AI tool, guidance for safe and responsible use is still getting worked out.

Governments are placing high-risk labels on forms of AI with the power to make critical decisions about whether a person gets a job or rents an apartment or receives government benefits . California Federation of Teachers President Jeff Freitas said he hasn’t considered whether AI for grading is moderate or high risk, but “it definitely is a risk to use for grading.”

The California Federation of Teachers is a union with 120,000 members. Freitas told CalMatters he’s concerned about AI having a number of consequences in the classroom. He’s worried administrators may use it to justify increasing classroom sizes or adding to teacher workloads; he’s worried about climate change and the amount of energy needed to train and deploy AI models’ he’s worried about protecting students’ privacy, and he’s worried about automation bias.

Regulators around the world wrestling with AI praise approaches where it is used to augment human decisionmaking instead of replacing it. But it’s difficult for laws to account for automation bias and humans becoming placing too much trust in machines.

The American Federation of Teachers created an AI working group in October 2023 to propose guidance on how educators should use the technology or talk about it in collective bargaining contract negotiations. Freitas said those guidelines are due out in the coming weeks.

“We’re trying to provide guidelines for educators to not solely rely on (AI), he said. “It should be used as a tool, and you should not lose your critical analysis of what it’s producing for you.”

State AI guidelines for teachers

Goyette, the computer science coordinator for the education department, helped create state AI guidelines and speaks to county offices of education for in-person training on AI for educators. She also helped create an online AI training series for educators. She said the most popular online course is about workflow and efficiency , which shows teachers how to automate lesson planning and grading.

“Teachers have an incredibly important and tough job, and what’s most important is that they’re building relationships with their students,” she said. “There’s decades of research that speaks to the power of that, so if they can save time on mundane tasks so that they can spend more time with their students, that’s a win.”

essay about teachers english

Alex Kotran, chief executive of an education nonprofit that’s supported by Google and OpenAI, said they found that it’s hard to design a language model to predictably match how a teacher grades papers.

He spoke with teachers willing to accept a model that’s accurate 80% of the time in order to reap the reward of time saved, but he thinks it’s probably safe to say that a student or parent would want to make sure an AI model used for grading is even more accurate.

Kotran of the AI Education Project thinks it makes sense for school districts to adopt a policy that says teachers should be wary any time they use AI tools that can have disparate effects on student’s lives.

Even with such a policy, teachers can still fall victim to trusting AI without question. And even if the state kept track of AI used by school districts, there’s still the possibility that teachers will purchase technology for use on their personal computers.

Kotran said he routinely speaks with educators across the U.S. and is not aware of any systematic studies to verify the effectiveness and consistency of AI for grading English papers.

When teachers can’t tell if they’re cheating

Roberts, the Point Loma High School teacher,  describes herself as pro technology.

She regularly writes and speaks about AI.  Her experiences have led her to the opinion that grading with AI is what’s best for her students, but she didn’t arrive at that conclusion easily.

At first she questioned whether using AI for grading and feedback could hurt her understanding of her students. Today she views using AI like the cross-country coach who rides alongside student athletes in a golf cart, like an aid that helps her assist her students better.

essay about teachers english

Roberts says the average high school English teacher in her district has roughly 180 students. Grading and feedback can take between five to 10 minutes per assignment she says, so between teaching, meetings, and other duties, it can take two to three weeks to get feedback back into the hands of students unless a teacher decides to give up large chunks of their weekends. With AI, it takes Roberts a day or two.

Ultimately she concluded that “if my students are growing as writers, then I don’t think I’m cheating.” She says AI reduces her fatigue, giving her more time to focus on struggling students and giving them more detailed feedback.

“My job is to make sure you grow, and that you’re a healthy, happy, literate adult by the time you graduate from high school, and I will use any tool that helps me do that, and I’m not going to get hung up on the moral aspects of that,” she said. “My job is not to spend every Saturday reading essays. Way too many English teachers work way too many hours a week because they are grading students the old-fashioned way.”

Roberts also thinks AI might be a less biased grader in some instances than human teachers who can adjust their grading for students sometimes to give them the benefit of the doubt or be punitive if they were particularly annoying in class recently.

She isn’t worried about students cheating with AI, a concern she characterizes as a moral panic. She points to a Stanford University study released last fall which found that students cheated just as much before the advent of ChatGPT as they did a year after the release of the AI.

Goyette said she understands why students question whether some AI use by teachers is like cheating. Education department AI guidelines encourage teachers and students to use the technology more. What’s essential, Goyette said, is that teachers discuss what ethical use of AI looks like in their classroom, and convey that — like using a calculator in math class — using AI is accepted or encouraged for some assignments and not others.

For the last assignment of the year, Robers has one final experiment to run: Edit an essay written entirely by AI. But they must change at least 50% of the text, make it 25% longer, write their own thesis, and add quotes from classroom reading material. The idea, she said, is to prepare them for a future where AI writes the first draft and humans edit the results to fit their needs.

“It used to be you weren’t allowed to bring a calculator into the SATs and now you’re supposed to bring your calculator so things change,” she said. “It’s just moral panic. Things change and people freak out and that’s what’s happening.”

For the record: An earlier version of this story misnamed the AI tool made by the company Quill. Quill is both the name of the company and the tool.

QuillBot is an AI-powered writing tool for students in grades 4-12 made by the company Quill. Quill says its tool is currently used at 1,000 schools in California and has more than 13,000 student and educator users in San Diego alone. An annual Quill Premium subscription costs $80 per teacher or $1800 per school.

QuillBot does not generate writing for students like ChatGPT or grade writing assignments, but gives students feedback on their writing. Quill is a nonprofit that’s raised $20 million from groups like Google’s charitable foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation over the past 10 years.

A woman with light skin tone wearing glasses stands in front of her class, pointing to something displayed on a massive screen.

Regulators around the world wrestling with AI praise approaches where it is used to augment human decision-making instead of replacing it.

A smiling teacher stands among her students in a classroom. The students all sitting at a table and working on their laptops.

A student's hand interacts with the keyboard of a dark-colored laptop. Next to the computer is the book "Life of PI."

Essay on Teacher 600 words
