Man Working Workspace Lifestyle Concept

Make innovative contributions to contemporary literature

Creative writing at UNSW School of the Arts & Media will empower you to produce innovative contributions to contemporary literature. You’ll explore fresh, experimental writing across genres in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and ficto-criticism.

Your study in creative writing will balance literary study and creative practice, with a grounding in the development of new literary techniques, forms and genres throughout history. You’ll be taught by award-winning writers with internationally recognised expertise in teaching and creative writing. Through your study, you’ll achieve a thorough understanding of the critical and social contexts in which your work circulates.

Prepare yourself for a career in the creative arts

As part of UNSW School of the Arts & Media, you’ll analyse links between writing and other forms of art and media through elective courses in film studies, theatre and performance and media and communications. Learning to write creatively and effectively will allow you to apply these skills in various creative industries such as public relations, copywriting, social media and scriptwriting.

Learn from national leaders in research

You'll be taught by award-winning academics, scholars and writers in an innovative, creative and stimulating environment. We support a strong research culture, and our school is benchmarked with the highest global rating of 5 by Excellence Research in Australia (ERA). Our staff have received the Vice-Chancellor's and Dean's Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Research Supervision.

Connect with the wider literary community

UNSWriting runs a series of masterclasses and “in conversation” events with visiting local and international authors. These events enable students to connect with the wider literary community. UNSWriting cultivates ideas and good writing, giving you the chance to experience special events, workshops and public talks with professionals in the field.

Our network of writers, publishers and students gives you valuable industry connections, which will support your future career path – wherever that may lead.

Write for our student-run publication

The  UNSWeetened Literary Journal  is an annual publication run by students at Arc. It provides a voice for students, showcasing the university's creative writing talent and features poetry and prose from both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

At UNSW, you'll hone your practical knowledge of creative writing through participation in group workshops. You'll come to view yourself as a participant in the public life of literature and to understand the political and ethical dimensions of the aesthetic choices you’ll make as a writer.

More than an MA

The Writing and Society Research Centre offers a nationally leading Master of Arts in Literature and Creative Writing taught by eminent authors, critics and editors.

The MA is a challenging, rigorous and industry-focused degree that combines critical research and creative work. Students are guided by publishing writers to produce works of literary scholarship or creative writing across a diverse range of styles including fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, literary criticism, screenwriting and scriptwriting.

Our Centre is unique in Australia in the way it combines scholarship, authorship, publishing expertise and community engagement. Celebrated writers, scholars and editors working in the Centre include Alexis Wright, Felicity Castagna, George Haddad, Luke Carman, Kate Fagan, Mette Jakobsen, James Jiang, Anthony Uhlmann and Tegan Bennett Daylight.

The Centre houses the highly decorated literary press Giramondo Publishing and Australia’s pre-eminent literary review site, the Sydney Review of Books . Doctoral programs of study in Literature and Creative Writing are also available. We are ranked above world standing in the study of literature and creative arts practice.

In short, the Writing and Society Research Centre is one of the best places nationally either to become a writer or to think in a critical and scholarly way about writing.

Subject Offerings in the MLit/CW

The MA program takes 18 months (three semesters) full-time. Part-time study is also possible. Students take two 12-week (semester-long) core subjects: Creative Methods in Research and Creative Writing Practice. These foundational subjects are complemented by four 6-week elective subjects: Writers at Work, Reading and Writing Australia, Writing and Genre and Creative Non-Fiction. Students can also choose electives from the SoHCA MRes elective offerings.

In Year 2, MA students complete a research project that involves either a major creative work (11,000 words or equivalent for your genre, plus a 4000-word exegesis) or a scholarly thesis of 15,000 words. The Masters Project is completed over 6 months. MA students are further encouraged to take part in the vibrant culture of the Centre with its many  events and seminars . The MA is taught currently from 5pm-8pm (evenings after work) on Parramatta City campus.

Outstanding MA students may choose to transition to a scholarship-supported MRes thesis year in Year 2. Please see further information below or contact our Postgraduate Adviser, Dr Melinda Jewell: [email protected]

TEDxSydney unveils new-look creative program for 2024

This will see the TEDxSydney annual flagship event replaced by two specially-curated, intimate events designed to cater to the evolving interests of Australians.

The popular TEDxSydney Youth event will now be supported by two TEDxSydney Salons, an intimate evening event format which TEDxSydney CEO, Susan McMahon, says allows Australians to connect more deeply on specific topics with like-minded people across industries.

Susan McMahon, CEO of TEDxSydney says, “We know our community is seeking connection through tailored experiences. We also acknowledge that the Australian live events landscape more broadly is evolving. Our long-term strategic goal is to provide a platform for meaningful discussion and facilitate the exchange of ideas that drive action, innovation and leadership. We’re excited to see what evolutionary opportunities this new, refreshed approach will bring to the individuals and thought leaders shaping Australia’s contemporary society and the future.”

The first TEDxSydney Salon on 27 June will focus on 'Net Zero’ emphasising sustainability and environmental responsibility in partnership with Presenting Partner, the University of Sydney.

Professor Mark Scott, Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Sydney said, “We are proud to once again partner with TEDxSydney in 2024 to facilitate the exchange of ideas, creativity, and innovation for the global good. The University of Sydney and TEDxSydney share an ambition to solve the greatest challenges of our time by bringing together brilliant minds from diverse backgrounds in pursuit of a better world. We look forward to exploring the opportunities presented by net zero and artificial intelligence, and hearing the unique perspectives of future generations.”

Sydney-siders can also mark their calendars for the TEDxSydney Youth event, curated by young visionaries and uniquely designed to inspire an intergenerational audience, on 29 August in Parramatta. A second Salon will delve into 'Advancements in Artificial Intelligence', exploring the ethical implications of innovations in AI, with dates to be confirmed later this year.
