Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®)

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) is a certification in applied behavior analysis (ABA) received by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc.® (BACB®). With a focus on socially significant behaviors, BCBAs support individuals from diverse backgrounds in a variety of settings, including classrooms, clinics, hospitals, and nonprofits, and often specialize in areas such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, or organizational behavior management (OBM).

Clinical Supervisor/Manager of ABA Services

Clinical supervisors manage a caseload at organizations who provide behavioral clinical services. This involves conducting initial and ongoing assessments and designing behavioral intervention programs for clients. It also involves providing training and oversight to behavior technicians who provide direct intervention services to clients. In addition to providing clinical supervision, clinical managers may oversee other clinical supervisors within the organization. Clinical managers may manage one single office for an organization or multiple office locations.

Care Manager

Care managers are hired by insurance companies to review intervention plans submitted by ABA providers who work with individuals with ASD. Care managers examine clinical outcome measures to ensure they are aligned with funder policies and criteria. They also review intervention plans to determine the appropriateness of clinical recommendations and treatment dosages. Care managers consult with BCBAs® regarding intervention goals to meet client needs and funding source policies. Finally, they consult with diagnosis providers (e.g., medical physicians, licensed psychologists, nurse practitioners) regarding diagnostic tools and documentation that meets funding source policies.

Behavior Consultant

Behavior consultants contract with individuals and organizations to provide their clinical expertise in various sectors of ABA. The types of services they provide could include project-based tasks such as creating a curriculum, program, or process for an individual or organization, assisting an organization with developing a new program or service, training staff, and providing a clinical opinion or recommendation.

Online Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Discover how people learn and explore theories of behavior change.

The Purdue University College of Education’s online Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) prepares future behavior analysts to apply the science of behavioral research across educational systems. This 21-credit program is ideal for those that already have a master’s degree and want to complete the verified course sequence necessary for becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.  This is an online program, and a master’s degree is required to be completed in order to be admitted into the Certificate program. For information on accepted majors, please contact [email protected].

What is applied behavior analysis?

Applied behavioral science is a broad field of study using behavioral research and knowledge to solve real-world problems. The study of applied behavioral science is based on principles of exploring and understanding complex human behavior. ABA can be used to teach new skills, enhance performance, or reduce challenging behaviors in people of all ages, with or without disabilities. The specific focus of ABA interventions is unique to each person or situation, but in general, the goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and promote learning. ABA can be used with any population including children, adults, families, and communities.

Our certificate program will focus on ethical principles and evidence-based best practices. This includes assessing behavior, developing personalized therapy plans, and using data to track progress. Our program supports ABA across contexts such as schools, home, community, and clinics.

Purdue quality. Flexible schedule.

Online students enjoy the same rigorous academic programs as on-campus students, but with a much more flexible class environment. The program utilizes a cohort model in which students begin a systematic sequence of coursework in the fall semester. The cohort model is designed to foster professional learning communities for students. Classes are taught in a synchronous, distance modality. Coursework and interactions occur in an online learning environment with students meeting online on specific dates and at set times (according to EST Eastern Standard Time Zone).

This 21-credit hour Certificate program also serves as an avenue for recruitment into the Special Education doctoral program. Note that while the Certificate program is online, the related doctoral program is not.

Applicants who have completed a master’s degree in a qualifying field of study with a minimum GPA of 3.0 are eligible for admission into the certificate program.  Additionally, Purdue graduate students currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in Psychological Sciences or Education could enroll in the certificate program with special permission of the Department Head and the Verified Course Sequence Coordinator.

The Best Online BCBA Certification Programs of 2022

Page Topics

behavior analytic coursework online

In 2022, most online BCBA programs are offered as part of a master’s degree program and have been accredited by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. These programs provide coursework in special education, psychology, or applied behavior analysis, and they include the required behavior-analytic coursework necessary to sit for the BCBA exam.

The majority of online programs offer flexible class schedules, with part-time or full-time study options available. Many students continue working while pursuing their degree online and are able to complete all coursework in about two years.

BCBA Certification

If you have looked into becoming a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA), you are probably aware of the coursework requirements established by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). These requirements are in place to ensure that behavior therapists are competent and skilled practitioners in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA).

The three primary requirements for becoming a BCBA are:

  • A graduate degree with relevant behavior-analytic coursework.
  • Practical experience or supervised fieldwork.
  • Passing the national BCBA certification exam.

All BCBA certification programs must be at the master’s or doctoral level in the fields of behavior analysis, education, or psychology. It is also essential that your degree program covers behavior-analytic coursework that meets BACB standards as verified course sequences. A preliminary degree evaluation is available for students who are unsure if their degree meets all BACB requirements.

Online BCBA Certification Programs

Online certification programs that have been verified by the BACB to meet all coursework requirements qualify and prepare students to sit for the national BCBA exam. Selecting a program from an accredited college or university is the best way to make sure you are enrolling in a reputable educational program.

ABA programs are offered by universities and educational institutions across the country. Here is a selection of top online BCBA graduate programs in 2022:

  • University of Dayton : Designated as a verified course sequence by the Association for Behavior Analysis International, completion of this Master of Applied Behavior Analysis degree qualifies students to sit for the BCBA exam.
  • Simmons University : A Master in Behavior Analysis can be completed in as little as 23 months. Live classes are held weekly via webcam, mentoring and supervision hours are included in the course, and no GRE is required to apply.
  • Pepperdine University : An online Master of Science in Behavioral Psychology is offered through the School of Education and Psychology. Included in the coursework is the curriculum needed to qualify for the BCBA exam. The curriculum is delivered through a combination of online coursework, in-person classes, and local clinical experience.
  • Regis College : With three possible start dates per year, a Master in Applied Behavior Analysis can be completed in 20 months. This program meets all BCBA requirements, and certificate options are available.
  • Drexel University : An online Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis is offered through this top-ranking university. With coursework accredited by the BACB, this program can be completed on a part-time or full-time schedule. Online or on-campus options are also available.
  • Monmouth University : An online Master of Education in Special Education with an autism or ABA track is offered. The ABA track must be selected in order to complete the required coursework to sit for the BCBA exam. The online ABA certificate can also be earned independently of the master’s degree.
  • The Chicago School of Professional Psychology : A part-time, online Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis is offered that can be completed in 28 months. This program meets the educational requirements for students to qualify to take the BCBA exam and prepares students to work with many different populations in their careers.
  • Pennsylvania State University : This BACB-accredited Master of Education in Special Education with an emphasis in ABA program is offered via an online platform. Students learn evidence-based practices for working with individuals with special needs. Most students complete the program in 1.5 to 2 years, though you have the ability to personalize your program plan, completing it at your own pace.
  • Oregon Institute of Technology : This online Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis program follows the BACB course sequence for anyone who wishes to take the BCBA exam. Students must take nine BCBA courses plus additional electives. Second-year students who live locally can complete their practicum placement through Oregon Tech’s ABA program.
  • University of Cincinnati : This fully online Master of Education: Foundations in Behavior Analysis program delivers BCBA curriculum via 10 courses that typically take about five semesters to complete. Certificate-only programs are also offered online.
  • Cairn University : Ranked and accredited, this online program allows students to complete a Master of Arts in Applied Behavior Analysis. The program can be started at any semester and be completed in as few as five semesters. A verified course sequence program, this degree prepares students to take the BCBA exam.
  • Western Connecticut State University : Recognized as one of the most affordable online ABA programs available, this Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis degree fully complies with BCBA education requirements. A certificate in ABA is also offered to students who have already completed an acceptable graduate degree from an accredited university.
  • Texas A&M University : This MEd/MS in Special Education is designed to be completed in two years and is entirely online. Through this program, students complete behavior-analytical coursework that qualifies them to take the national BCBA exam. To be admitted to the master’s program, students must apply to both the department of Educational Psychology and Texas A&M University.
  • Ball State University : An accredited and relatively affordable degree program, this online Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis is entirely online and can be completed in less than two years. Students complete BCBA-required courses and have the option to add an emphasis in autism.
  • University of Southern Maine : An online Master of Science in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in ABA is offered. Courses are offered online with weekly online meetings with your professors and classmates. Students typically take one or two courses per semester and complete the entire BACB-certified program within two years.

Online vs. In-Person Programs

The decision to complete an online ABA program instead of an in-person program should be based on your personal needs and without fear of compromising any educational quality of the program. Online education has come a long way in recent years, and in 2022, an online education is on par with the quality of an in-person one. As long as you select a BACB-certified program, you can be sure that the coursework you receive meets all eligibility and certification requirements.

Online and on-campus graduates of ABA programs exhibit similar pass rates on the BCBA exam. According to Simmons University, 85% of their graduates in 2018, whether from their online or on-campus program, passed the BCBA exam on their first try.

An online program puts more responsibility on the student to study independently and progress through the coursework in a timely manner, but there is just as much potential for educational success as there is through a traditional on-campus program. If you know you struggle with personal time management, an in-person program may be better for you.

Working Toward Your BCBA Certification Online

Completion of an online BCBA certification program is an excellent route for people who can not otherwise attend a traditional on-campus program. Online programs provide flexibility and cost savings that not many in-person programs can offer.

As long as you are diligent about verifying the credentials of your program, an online BCBA program may be your way to achieving the behavior analyst certification that you want. It’s the first step on your journey to becoming a BCBA.

ABA program mission statement

Our goal is to prepare students to be competent, inclusive, ethical, and professional behavior analysts who work with persons with developmental disabilities and their families.

Students coming out of our program will:

  • Understand and fluently apply the principles of behavior analysis.
  • Have a working knowledge of current evidence-based practices for individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Select or create contextually appropriate, evidence-based interventions for individuals with whom they work and critically analyze and evaluate the effects of those interventions.
  • Work collaboratively and openly with schools, families and other community stakeholders, always with an understanding of how culture and equity impact service delivery.
  • Ensure that the primary outcome of their work is to improve the quality of life for the individual and their family.

Our ABA Program is guided by five core ethical principles.

Behavior analysts have a responsibility to engage in practices that maximize their clients' well-being and avoid those that cause harm. We understand that behavior analytic services are most likely to benefit our clients when they are provided in the context of a trusting and compassionate relationship. Where conflicts of interest arise between consumers of behavior analysis, we prioritize outcomes for the most vulnerable clients.

Behavior analysts have a responsibility to provide individuals of all backgrounds and abilities access to and authentic participation in meaningful activities that promote relationships, a sense of community, and an improved quality of life.

Behavior analysts have a responsibility to be honest and transparent. We engage in ongoing professional development and analyze our own practices. Professional excellence requires respectful and effective collaboration with individuals from other disciplines while maintaining a commitment to data-based decision-making. Analyzing evidence from different methodologies is encouraged as a way of collaborating with others and improving practice.

Behavior analysts respect clients’ rights and promote client dignity, privacy, and autonomy. We assist clients to set and achieve their own goals, develop their own agency, and make decisions about their own lives.

Behavior analysts have a responsibility to attend to injustice where they see it, avoid perpetuating inequitable systems, and advocate for equitable systems change. We are uniquely qualified to identify controlling and contextual variables that contribute to inequitable educational and service-delivery systems and develop solutions to supplant them.

Our graduates

Our graduates are behavior specialists in schools, as well as in day-treatment centers, ABA provider agencies, community based organizations, homes and in communities.

According to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® (BACB®) “Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been empirically shown to be effective in a wide variety of areas, including parent training, substance abuse treatment, dementia management, brain injury rehabilitation, occupational safety intervention, among others. However, because ABA was first applied to the treatment of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism, this practice area has the largest evidence base and has received the most recognition.”

Practical training experience

Other graduate programs in behavior analysis require students to structure their own practicum and find a fieldwork supervisor. At the Global Institute of Behavior Analysis, we designed the practical training component with flexibility and student support in mind. Our practical training coordinator will guide you each step of the way through your fieldwork experience,  from selecting a site location to working with your supervisor.

You select your learning experience

You may choose between two practicum experiences: intensive supervised fieldwork or supervised fieldwork.

Intensive supervised fieldwork

  • 1,500 hours
  • 10% of hours overseen by qualified supervisor
  • 4 meetings/observations monthly

Supervised fieldwork hours

  • 2,000 hours
  • 5% of hours overseen by qualified supervisor
  • 2 meetings/observations monthly

You set the learning pace

The program does not require you to complete the entirety of your supervised fieldwork while in the online master's program in behavior analysis. You are only required to complete half of the required BACB® hours during the program. The remaining hours can be completed after you finish the master's program and move into the next phase of your career.

Our goal is to empower our students to advocate for themselves. In pursuit of this goal, we give a range rather than a fixed requirement for fieldwork hours accrued every month of the program. This allows you some flexibility in determining your schedule to balance your educational goals, work, and personal life. The focus is on the quality of the training rather than quantity. Quality is monitored by our Practical Training Coordinator and promoted through the training we offer supervisors.

Our practicum courses not only include the coordination of fieldwork but also exam preparation. Students will complete test preparation modules throughout the program to ensure students graduate ready to take the BACB® certification exam.

Training overview and requirements

Practical training can take place in multiple environments with a variety of clients. OnABA will train and coordinate with each supervisor to make sure experience meets each student’s needs. Students can participate in a blend of group and individual meetings with their supervisor. Supervisors will observe trainees performing behavior analytic tasks and provide guidance and feedback. During meetings, supervisors will model technical, professional, and ethical acquisition targets. Supervisors will teach trainees to monitor the effects of behavioral service delivery and oversee this process. The supervisor will also monitor the outcomes of their own supervision and make changes to procedures as needed.

In addition to observations and meetings, supervisors will direct trainees to complete client related, BACB task-list oriented assignments. These assignments will include readings and discussion, behavioral program development, literature reviews on client related topics, data analysis and interpretation, developing data recording systems, etc. These assignments will be reviewed during meetings, and feedback will be provided.

Site selection

Each student will need to identify a practical training site. An affiliate agreement must be signed between the practical training site and the University of Nevada, Reno. Students will have from the time of admission to the second semester of the program to secure this.

Supervisor selection

Each student must identify a supervisor to oversee their practical training. OnABA staff will review and approve the credentials of all supervisors. Supervisors must participate in training provided by OnABA. An approved contract must be signed by the supervisor and the student.

Throughout her career, she has worked in a variety of settings including school, clinic, community and home environments where she has consulted with caregivers, teachers, therapists and community members. In addition to her role as program director at St. Edward’s University, she is also a clinician and provides direct supervision to behavior analysts in the field.

Shpall is also the director of Training and Research at Galliant Autism Care. Her research and clinical interests include working with children and their families to develop functional communication, decrease severe challenging behaviors, increase tolerance to delays to reinforcement, increase social and emotional development; and cultivate an assent-based practice of behavior analysis and collaboration among health service providers.

Molly Oshinski , PhD, BCBA-D, LBA

Adjunct Professor

Molly Oshinski is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and has experience working with ages 2–80 which has given her a unique perspective to always consider the long-term effects that therapists can have when working with clients. She is also co-founder and CEO of Pickle System which creates animated video models to teach a large variety of daily living skills to individuals with disabilities. She is a PhD candidate at The University of Texas at Austin with research that examines the effectiveness of animated video models in teaching menstrual care to individuals with autism.

Caroline Roesel , MEd, BCBA

Adjunct Professor Caroline Roesel is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who has worked as a BCBA in the Austin area since 2015. She has worked in early childhood development for 16 years in various roles including teacher, research assistant and analyst at clinical and administrative levels. Her work with young children with special needs began while she was earning a bachelor’s degree from Texas Woman’s University in Communication Science and Disorders. She went on to teach in the general education setting before returning to school to earn her graduate degree.

During graduate school at The University of Texas at Austin, Roesel worked at the UT Meadow’s Center for Preventing Educational Risk with children with a wide range of diagnoses, including autism, ODD, dyslexia, dyscalculia and other learning disabilities. After graduating with an MEd in Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders, she continued her studies in applied behavior analysis at the Florida Institute of Technology. After working for eight years with young children with autism and their families, her work expanded to serving adults living in group homes with a wide range of disabilities, moderate to severe challenging behaviors and acute psychiatric disorders.

Michelle Kuhn , PhD, BCBA-D, LBA

Michelle Kuhn is the chief clinical officer at Galliant Autism Care as well as a professor in this program. She has been in the field of special education for over 15 years and has been teaching in higher education for over five years. In that time, she has worked in schools, homes and clinics with individuals from early intervention through adulthood. Her focus has mostly been on individuals with ASD and other developmental disabilities, and her research focus has been predominantly on social communication and staff training.

Khun is originally from the south side of Chicago and completed both her undergraduate and master’s at the University of Illinois. She later completed her PhD at The University of Texas at Austin. Her teaching philosophy promotes a real-life view of coursework and material. As a teacher, her goal is not just to help you learn textbook lessons, but to help you think about and apply those in real life, and work to communicate with the primary people in clients’ lives to get buy-in and collaboration across the board. With this, she hopes to promote an atmosphere of communication and partnership in class to assist with the use of these skills outside of class.

Jennifer Hines , MEd, BCBA, LBA

Jennifer Hines has worked in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders for over 25 years within social service agencies, school districts, government and private practice. For 11 years, Hines was the State Neurodevelopmental Disorders Specialist for The Texas Workforce Commission, Division of Rehabilitation Services. She published the first Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) state policy on Applied Behavior Analysis. She published four additional state policies that created the first-ever Autism Endorsement for Employment Specialists, an Autism Premium, and a Vocational Assessment for Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Jacob Watson , MEd, BCBA, LBA-TX

Adjunct Instructor Jake Watson became a BCBA in 2020 at the start of Covid and was thrown into clinical supervision while short-staffed and overwhelmed. That sparked a passion for Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) and how to improve organizational and individual performance. His passion led to becoming an OBM specialist in 2021, and he has since started his own business with his wife (who’s also a BCBA!). His passion and mission are to educate, equip and empower others in OBM and performance using behavior analysis as a framework for creating lasting behavior change.
