You can find the regulations applying to both bachelor’s and master’s theses in the §§ of the APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations) and in the FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) of your degree program. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with these regulations as soon as possible and consult the administrative office of your school or departmental student advising should you have any questions.
To be eligible to register for the thesis, you must fulfill certain requirements, e.g. you must have successfully completed certain modules or have earned a certain amount of credits. Please inform yourself about the admission requirements in the FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) of your degree program.
Once you have identified your thesis topic and had it approved by your principal advisor, you must register for the thesis. Because the registration process may vary from school to school, we recommend that you consult the information on the websites of your school or your program’s departmental student advising and inform yourself about the registration process. Please note that registration for the thesis is often only possible in a certain cycle of time (e.g. up to the 15th of each month). Be sure to inform yourself early on about deadlines to avoid unnecessary time delays.
The permissible amount of time that may elapse between registering for and submitting the thesis is specified in the FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) of your degree program. Further information on registering your thesis and applicable time frames is also available on the homepage of your school or department.
Please follow the guidelines below for the use of English in thesis titles. Submitted documents not complying with these guidelines will be changed/corrected by a representative of the Academic Programs Office or Examination Office to ensure the correct and consistent appearance of all graduation documents at TUM.
Bachelor’s Thesis Depending on the degree program, 6 to 12 credits shall be awarded for the preparation of a bachelor’s thesis. Calculated in hours, this is equivalent to a workload of approximately 180 to 360 hours for the thesis. Please note that, as a rule, you must achieve further credits while working on your thesis. You will be writing your thesis as “part-time work”. Be sure to allot yourself a sufficient amount of time! You can find information about the number of credits to be awarded for the thesis in your degree program in your program’s FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations). Master’s Thesis For the preparation of the master’s thesis, 30 credits will be awarded. Calculated in hours, this is equivalent to a workload of approximately 900 hours for the thesis. For advanced studies master’s programs, 15 to 30 credits will be awarded. You can find information regarding the number of credits to be awarded for the thesis in your degree program in your program’s FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations).
If a student cannot meet the first submission deadline for the thesis for reasons beyond the student’s control, the Examination Committee may extend the period for writing the thesis by a maximum of half that period. The student must file an application with the Examination Committee for an extension prior to the first submission deadline, and the student’s supervisor must approve the extension. In such a case, please contact your supervisor as early as possible. Should you be prevented from working on your thesis due to illness and are able to verify this with medical documentation, then the allocated time period for the thesis will be suspended. You can find important information on dealing with medical documentation here
Once your thesis is finished, you have to submit it to your department or school within the corresponding deadline. Please refer to the website of your school or department or contact your departmental student advising for the details.
The FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) of your degree program contains information about further requirements of your thesis such as a supplementary colloquium, a supplementary course, or defense. The module description contains information about the structure of these additional requirements and the pass/fail credit requirement or, respectively, the credit requirement you must fulfill.
The APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations) stipulate that, as a rule, the thesis is to be assessed within two months from the date of submission (§ 18 (11) APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations)). Should your FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) stipulate that the thesis module calls for additional credit requirements (such as a colloquium or a thesis defense), the overall grade for the module will be calculated as the weighted average of grades awarded for individual module requirements. The grade weights of individual requirements correspond to the number of credits awarded (§ 18 (12) APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations)).
If the thesis has not been graded with at least “sufficient” (4.0), you are permitted, once, to submit a thesis on a new topic. To do so, you must register again no later than six weeks from notification of the results. Please note that the thesis and final colloquium may only be repeated once (§24 (7) APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations)).
For the period in which you are working on your thesis at the TUM, from registration to submission, (+ where applicable, any supplementary requirements in conjunction with your thesis, such as a final colloquium or oral exam) you must remain enrolled in your degree program (cp. § 6 (3), APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations). Do not forget to reenroll (Rückmeldung) within the prescribed registration time. This also applies if you are writing your thesis externally, i.e. at a company in Germany or abroad.
We appreciate your wishes, suggestions and criticism! Write an e-mail to feedback(at)tum.de .
Having trouble choosing a topic for your bachelor’s or master’s thesis? Our Themenbörse posts current thesis topics from across the spectrum of TUM’s academic departments.
Finding a topic and supervisor for your final thesis is an essential part of your degree program. There are several ways to achieve this goal:
Last, but not least, we recommend to check the provided information sheets in our Download Center and the module description of the final thesis. We wish you the best of luck!

Hinweise zum Einsatz der Google Suche
Most thesis are structured as shown below. Each part may be split into several chapter. For example, the part introduction may have two separate chapters for a the general introduction to the topic and the research question. But the parts commonly appear in the following order:
1. introduction, 2. literature review, 3. data collection, 4. analysis, 5. conclusions, list of references, statement of independent work.
TUM provides a template for theses that is recommended to use. You can download this template in Word or LaTeX format (login with your TUM account required to access).
There is no mandatory length of a thesis. Most well-written master's theses have between 50 and 80 pages, Bachelor's theses typically have between 40 and 60 pages. However, depending on your topic and your writing style, more or fewer pages may be appropriate. Be aware that your thesis will only be evaluated based on the written document and the defense. If you did some nice work (that you might have shown to your adviser at some point) and forget to add it to your written document, it cannot be evaluated.
The title page should include the following information:
It is also nice (but optional) to add a pretty graphic from your research to the title page.
In this part, you acknowledge any support you may have gotten while preparing your thesis. For example, if an agency provided you with data, you definitely should thank them here. It is also not uncommon to offer personal thank to friends and/or family who supported the thesis. You may also mention your adviser if (s)he was helpful, but that is optional of course.
If you received a scholarship that supported you during the time you wrote your thesis, you definitely should acknowledge that support here as well.
The summary is a key part of your thesis and part of what is evaluated by your thesis committee. Make sure to reserve sufficient time at the very end to write a very good summary. The summary should be about one page long and include your research question, describe the data you used, briefly describe the methodology applied and (very important) also summarize the results you found.
The table of contents lists all chapters and subchapters of your thesis and provides the page number where each chapter starts. Word and LaTeX offer automated functions to create a table of contents if you defined headers properly. Make sure to update the table of contents before you print to ensure that all page numbers are correct.
Following the table of contents, you also need to provide a list of figures and a list of tables. Likewise, these lists also provide the page number where the figures and tables can be found. Again, word and LaTeX provide automated functions for creating such lists.
The introduction shall provide the reader with an entryway to your topic. Commonly, the introduction is not too technical and provides the reader with a very general introduction why the topic of the thesis is relevant. Empirical examples are particular popular in introductions (make sure to provide citations), such as:
Thesis Topic: Managing Freight Flows to Reduce Highway Maintenance Costs
The first sentence of introduction could be: Freight flows largely define the costs for maintaining infrastructure, as the rear axles of a typical 13 ton van cause 1,000-times the structural damage of a car (Small, Winston, and Evans 1989: 11).
The introduction should also provide at least one research question that you try to answer. Last but not least, the introduction should also introduce the structure of the thesis (i.e., which chapters the reader should expect) in one paragraph.
The literature review is a core element of your thesis and shows that you are capable of working scientifically. As you explain what other researchers have found on your topic, the reader will realize that you know this topic extremely well. This will build trust that you can provide a piece of work yourself that is scientifically relevant.
Equally important, you will need to identify a gap in the literature that you intent to fill. This is how you justify your thesis, and it helps the reader to assess the importance of your work. This gap may be methodological ("I will develop a new method that is able to answer my research question, which previously applied methods cannot as well."), use new data ("Other researchers used database X, but I will use data retrieved by Y."), or a new application ("This method has never been applied to the city of Munich.").
Describe in detail which data you use and how you collect these data. This may include qualitative data ("I analyze these in-depth travel behavior surveys."), or statistics you use, or data you collect yourself. The description should be as detailed that a very good fellow student in your field would be able to more or less reproduce your work.
If you conduct a case study, the study area needs to be introduced here.
Obviously, here you describe in great detail the actual analysis you conducted. The level of detail should be sufficient to allow a very smart fellow student in your field to reproduce more or less your research.
The most important at the beginning: The chapter Conclusions does not contain a summary of your thesis! The summary is provided in the abstract of the beginning of your thesis, but not here.
Instead, the conclusions shall do what the title suggests: Synthesize your findings and conclude what we learn from that. It will be useful to refer to your research question(s) and discuss if those were confirmed or rejected by your research. You may also refer back to you literature review and compare your findings with the findings that others have published.
This is also a good place to talk about limitations of your research. By clearly stating what your research is not able to do well, your thesis becomes stronger. If you show that you understand what your methodology misses, you show the reader that you understand very well what you research has accomplished, and what may need further research.
Which brings us to another topic you should touch on in your conclusions: What are future research needs? If a fellow student of you wanted to build on your research, what would be the next logical step that (s)he should try to address?
Last but not least, you may also assess if your findings have practical implications. Examples: Should waste water engineers use an additional test to assess water quality? Should transportation planners use different data to assess the level of service?
Here you list all references that were cited in your work, and only those references. References you read but did not cite do not appear here. After all, they were not relevant enough for this thesis to be cited, so they do not belong in your list of references.
If you use a reference management system (highly recommended), the list of references is created automatically. LaTeX also nicely integrated with Bibtex to automatically create a list of references. TUM offers Citavi and Endnote for free to students (access here , log in required), and there are a number of other systems that also may work well for you (see this list on wikipedia).
Finally, you need to provide a statement that reads as follows:
In German: Ich versichere hiermit, dass ich die von mir eingereichte Abschlussarbeit selbstständig verfasst und keine anderen als die angegebenen Quellen und Hilfsmittel benutzt habe.
Or in English: I hereby confirm that this thesis was written independently by myself without the use of any sources beyond those cited, and all passages and ideas taken from other sources are cited accordingly.
You may provide additional information in appendices. Some researchers are of the opinion that if something is important it should go into the main body of the thesis; and if it doesn't deserve being in the main body of the thesis, it should not be provided at all. Others say that is may be useful to provide extensive tables, mathematical proofs or series of graphics in the appendix if they are not required to understand the main text but useful for the interested reader.
It is very uncommon to provide a single graphic or a single table in the appendix. Those usually work better in the main body of the text. Commonly, only material that covers several pages would go into the appendix, it it distracts the reader if all those materials were shown in the main body of the thesis.
Extensive appendices may be left out in the printed version and only be provided on a CD or a thumb drive. Note, however, that some advisers refuse to open any files stored on a CD or a thumb drive while evaluating your thesis. As a rule of thumb, your thesis needs to be understandable without reading any appendices.

Your studies are coming to an end and now all that's missing is your final paper.
In order to find an interesting topic get in contact with chairs, lecturers, professors or external companies. There are often postings on bulletin boards or websites, or just have a look if you find something suitable on our Jobs and Career page.
As soon as you have found a good topic, your thesis needs to be registered.
Please register your thesis, no matter if bachelor’s or master’s thesis, digitally in the thesis portal of the TUM School of Life Sciences. Please note that the login is only possible via the eduVPN client (download: https://www.eduvpn.org/client-apps/ and instruction: https://doku.lrz.de/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=87425039 ).
You can find detailed instructions including screenshots on how to register your thesis here .
The responsible examiner has to digitally agree to your application. If this is done, the examination team will check if the requirements for the thesis are met (credit requirements, internships, WPP-registration, etc. depending on the study program) and your registration will be submitted to the examination board for approval. If all requirements are met, the registration of your thesis will be approved by the examination team.
You will then receive a confirmation via e-mail from the system, which you should save for your records . In order to have enough lead time for the review and approval of your application, it should be sent to the Campus Office about 4 weeks before the planned thesis start date .
As soon as the registration has been completed, it will also be entered and displayed in TUMonline within the next few days. Please check your account.
Please note that you must be enrolled until the day you submit your thesis . Further information about de-registration: https://www.tum.de/en/studies/graduation/withdrawal-from-university/
If you cannot meet your submission deadline for reasons beyond your control , the examination board may extend the completion period by a maximum of half of the regular processing time . If you are unable to work due to illness , the processing time will be suspended accordingly upon request.
The application for an extension must be submitted to the examination board before the date of submission and your supervisor has to agree by providing his signature. Therefore, please contact your supervisor early enough if you have problems with meeting your deadline. In general, you should expect a processing period of approx. 3 weeks until the examination board has decided on your application and the entry is recorded in your student file. If you are ill and can prove by a medical certificate that you are prevented from working on your thesis, the processing time is suspended for the duration of the illness stated in the certificate. Please make sure that the medical certificate contains all the required information, especially the beginning and (expected) end of the inability to work on your thesis, a certificate of incapacity for work is not sufficient (instructions on this can be found via https://www.tum.de/en/studies/during-your-studies/organizing-your-studies/examinations/withdrawing-from-examinations-medical-certificates ) Please send the signed application to thesis.co(at)ls.tum.de . It will make it easier for us to process your application if you name it: Last name_Extension.pdf . It will then be forwarded to the respective examination board and you will be informed after the examination board has decided on your application.
Thesis extension / suspension form (English) Antrag auf Verlängerung / Ruhen der Abschlussarbeit (German)
The layout of the cover sheet and various specifications are usually chair-specific. Please check the website of the chair or contact the supervisor of your thesis. Various general templates can be found in the MyTUM portal .
The Bachelor's thesis must not be handed in later than three months after your thesis issue date. The Master's thesis must not be handed in later than six months after your thesis issue date. In case of part-time study programs, different deadlines apply in accordance with the respective FPSO.
After you have successfully completed your thesis, log in to the thesis portal and upload your thesis as PDF file. You can find detailed information about the upload procedure and about the required designation of your PDF file in the instructions with screenshots here . The digital submission does not prevent you from the obligation to hand in the printed and signed version of your thesis to your examiner.
If the upload to the portal is not possible due to technical reasons, please send your thesis to thesis.co(at)ls.tum.de before the deadline.
Thesis evaluation form
The evaluation form is filled out by the examiner and is then sent to the Campus Office ( thesis.co(at)ls.tum.de ) along with the title page.
After receipt of the thesis grade in the Campus Office you will receive an e-mail with all information regarding the procedure for the preparation of the certificate.
After the approval by your advisor it can take up to 6 weeks until your transcript is issued and signed. You will then be informed by the Central Examination Office that your transcript is ready for collection.
You can also get your certificate by mail. For this, please submit the following request for delivery of the final documents to the department of central examination matters: https://www.tum.de/en/studies/graduation/documents/
If you need an early certificate of graduation, please fill out the form for the issuance of a certificate of graduation ( https://www.tum.de/en/studies/graduation/documents/ ) and send it to the Graduation Office and Academic Records (Campus Weihenstephan). Please note that this is not a certificate, only an official confirmation of your degree. If you have any questions, please contact your student advisor: https://www.ls.tum.de/en/ls/studies/campus-office-and-student-advising/advice-and-support/

Application Process
To apply for a thesis, please send the following information to Aida Cehajic ( [email protected] ):
In the case of applying for a bachelor or master thesis please include Bachelor thesis - Application or Master thesis - Application in the subject. Please refrain from preliminary inquiries and always send all the documents listed above.
We do not explicitly post current topics of bachelor's and master's theses on the webpage. If you are interested in writing a thesis at the chair, please send us your preference list (see above). We will try to find a topic that fits your interests. A list of exemplary topics from the past can be found here .
Note: If you want to work on a self-selected topic or if you want to write your thesis in cooperation with an industry partner, you are asked to hand in a short two-pager with a thesis proposal. This proposal should (at least) (i) define the research question, (ii) indicate the data and methodology to be used and (iii) discuss the related literature.
NOTE: New bachelor's theses will start in September 2024. The application deadline is September 20, 2024. Please send your application to [email protected] . After the registration is confirmed, the students will be invited to an info session, where the supervisor will provide all the details regarding the topic. The info session will take place in October 2024.
Afterwards, new bachelor theses will only be available as of February 2025. In the meantime, you can apply on a rolling basis since in exceptional cases, there might be topics available to be supervised individually.
Who can apply?
All students that have passed the course Corporate Finance can apply for bachelor theses.
For master's theses, students must have a specialization in "Finance & Accounting" from the Master in Management and Technology (TUM-BWL), or Finance and Information Management (FIM) degree program or should have passed two of the following four courses: Asset Management, Derivatives, International Capital Markets and Investment Practice or Advanced Seminar Finance & Accounting . If the grade of any of these courses is not in your transcript yet, please include it in the email body. In exceptional cases, students who passed only one of the four courses can apply for a master thesis at the department (i.e., students should then explain why they could not pass two of these courses or demonstrate that they passed comparable courses). We will then see whether we can find a suitable topic for you.
Additional requirements
It is expected that all students writing their bachelor or master thesis at our Chair visit our Finance Research Seminar series. In this way, the students can familiarize themselves more with the current state of research in their respective fields.
A final thesis has to adhere to scientific standards. It is the duty of the student to become familiar with those standards. Guidelines concerning the thesis itself (formal requirements, layout, etc) can be found here .
On a regular basis, there are workshops on Refinitiv Workspace and Datastream (see TUMonline ). Students who wish to write their final thesis at our department are highly recommended to participate in these workshops in order to be able to handle financial data necessary for their thesis.

Master theses
Topic: Markdown optimization for fresh categories (Kaufland)
For a retailer, ordering the right quantity of products is a crucial task on a daily level – too much quantity leads to food waste whereas too little leads to out – of – stock situations, lost sales, and dissatisfied customers. Excess stocks are particularly c ritical in fresh categories since the items must be sold off within a very short time due to their short best – before date. In order to sell the items before they perish (e.g., before reaching the best before date), targeted discounts are given by the employees in the stores. If a price discount i s too high, the remaining stock may be salvaged quickly, and the margin losses may be too high. On the other side, if the price discounts are too low, the risk of food waste increases.
The aim of t his master’s thesis is to develop an approach for profit – optimized markdown pricing in fresh categories (bakery, dairy and/ or counter) on a market – specific and item – specific level, with the goal to minimize the total write – offs and waste (losses from pric e reduction and remaining stock).
For a more detailed description, please follow this link: PDF: Markdown optimization for fresh categories
The tasks include:
A real – world dataset will be provided
Topic: Food waste in the hospitality and food service sector
Catering for a large number of people, as is the case in canteens, at events, or in hotels, for example, poses major challenges for service providers. Consumers require an attractive offer of dishes, while their preferences and hunger are hardly known. At the same time, the provider must prevent empty buffets and sold-out meals at all costs, a setting that practically provokes food waste. We want to approach this problem from the providers’ point of view, analyze the current way of planning the quantities and meals in facilities such as hotels, canteens, mass catering, etc. and find strategies for improvement.
The Master thesis should cover the following tasks:
Topic: The Stochastic Patient-to-Bed Assignment Problem
Patients who are admitted to a hospital as inpatients must be assigned a bed while respecting certain constraints. For instance, gender-mixed rooms are usually to be avoided, and it is desirable to assign patients of similar age to a room since this has been shown to increase patient satisfaction. Transfers of a patient to a different room during their stay are possible but should be minimized in order to reduce work for the nurses and stress for the patients. The goal of the master’s thesis is to go beyond a rolling horizon approach by formulating the patient-to-bed assignment problem with stochastic arrivals and lengths of stay of patients using Markov decision processes (MDPs).
For a more detailed description, please follow this link: PDF: The Stochastic Patient-to-Bed Assignment Problem
The specific tasks to be performed include:
Food retail Retail Logistics
Assortment Planning
Waste management
Last mile delivery
Hospital operations
Warehouse automation
