In the Oceans, the Volume Is Rising as Never Before

A new review of the scientific literature confirms that anthropogenic noise is becoming unbearable for undersea life.

Although clown fish are conceived on coral reefs, they spend the first part of their lives as larvae drifting in the open ocean. The fish are not yet orange, striped or even capable of swimming. They are still plankton, a term that comes from the Greek word for “wanderer,” and wander they do, drifting at the mercy of the currents in an oceanic rumspringa.

When the baby clown fish grow big enough to swim against the tide, they high-tail it home. The fish can’t see the reef, but they can hear its snapping, grunting, gurgling, popping and croaking. These noises make up the soundscape of a healthy reef, and larval fish rely on these soundscapes to find their way back to the reefs, where they will spend the rest of their lives — that is, if they can hear them.

But humans — and their ships, seismic surveys, air guns, pile drivers, dynamite fishing, drilling platforms, speedboats and even surfing — have made the ocean an unbearably noisy place for marine life , according to a sweeping review of the prevalence and intensity of the impacts of anthropogenic ocean noise published on Thursday in the journal Science . The paper, a collaboration among 25 authors from across the globe and various fields of marine acoustics, is the largest synthesis of evidence on the effects of oceanic noise pollution.

“They hit the nail on the head,” said Kerri Seger, a senior scientist at Applied Ocean Sciences who was not involved with the research. “By the third page, I was like, ‘I’m going to send this to my students.’”

Anthropogenic noise often drowns out the natural soundscapes, putting marine life under immense stress. In the case of baby clown fish, the noise can even doom them to wander the seas without direction, unable to find their way home.

“The cycle is broken,” said Carlos Duarte, a marine ecologist at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia and the lead author on the paper. “The soundtrack of home is now hard to hear, and in many cases has disappeared.”

Drowning out the signals

In the ocean, visual cues disappear after tens of yards, and chemical cues dissipate after hundreds of yards. But sound can travel thousands of miles and link animals across oceanic basins and in darkness, Dr. Duarte said. As a result, many marine species are impeccably adapted to detect and communicate with sound. Dolphins call one another by unique names. Toadfish hum. Bearded seals trill. Whales sing.

Scientists have been aware of underwater anthropogenic noise, and how far it propagates, for around a century, according to Christine Erbe, the director of the Center for Marine Science and Technology at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, and an author on the paper. But early research on how noise might affect marine life focused on how individual large animals responded to temporary noise sources, such as a whale taking a detour around oil rigs during its migration.

The new study maps out how underwater noise affects countless groups of marine life, including zooplankton and jellyfish . “The extent of the problem of noise pollution has only recently dawned on us,” Dr. Erbe wrote in an email.

The idea for the paper came to Dr. Duarte seven years ago. He had been aware of the importance of ocean sound for much of his long career as an ecologist, but he felt that the issue was not recognized on a global scale. Dr. Duarte found that the scientific community that focused on ocean soundscapes was relatively small and siloed, with marine mammal vocalizations in one corner, and underwater seismic activity, acoustic tomography and policymakers in other, distant corners. “We’ve all been on our little gold rushes,” said Steve Simpson, a marine biologist at the University of Exeter in England and an author on the paper.

Dr. Duarte wanted to bring together the various corners to synthesize all the evidence they had gathered into a single conversation; maybe something this grand would finally result in policy changes.

The authors screened more than 10,000 papers to ensure they captured every tendril of marine acoustics research from the past few decades, according to Dr. Simpson. Patterns quickly emerged demonstrating the detrimental effects that noise has on almost all marine life. “With all that research, you realize you know more than you think you know,” he said.

Dr. Simpson has studied underwater bioacoustics — how fish and marine invertebrates perceive their environment and communicate through sound — for 20 years. Out in the field, he became accustomed to waiting for a passing ship to rumble by before going back to work studying the fish. “I realized, ‘Oh wait, these fish experience ships coming by every day,’” he said.

Marine life can adapt to noise pollution by swimming, crawling or oozing away from it, which means some animals are more successful than others. Whales can learn to skirt busy shipping lanes and fish can dodge the thrum of an approaching fishing vessel, but benthic creatures like slow-moving sea cucumbers have little recourse.

If the noise settles in more permanently, some animals simply leave for good. When acoustic harassment devices were installed to deter seals from preying on salmon farms in the Broughton Archipelago in British Columbia, killer whale populations declined significantly until the devices were removed, according to a 2002 study .

These forced evacuations reduce population sizes as more animals give up territory and compete for the same pools of resources. And certain species that are bound to limited biogeographic ranges, such as the endangered Maui dolphin, have nowhere else to go. “Animals can’t avoid the sound because it’s everywhere,” Dr. Duarte said.

Even temporary sounds can cause chronic hearing damage in the sea creatures unlucky enough to be caught in the acoustic wake. Both fish and marine mammals have hair cells, sensory receptors for hearing. Fish can regrow these cells, but marine mammals probably cannot.

Luckily, unlike greenhouse gases or chemicals, sound is a relatively controllable pollutant. “Noise is about the easiest problem to solve in the ocean,” Dr. Simpson said. “We know exactly what causes noise, we know where it is, and we know how to stop it.”

In search of quiet

Many solutions to anthropogenic noise pollution already exist, and are even quite simple. “Slow down, move the shipping lane, avoid sensitive areas, change propellers,” Dr. Simpson said. Many ships rely on propellers that cause a great deal of cavitation: Tiny bubbles form around the propeller blade and produce a horrible screeching noise. But quieter designs exist, or are in the works.

“Propeller design is a very fast-moving technological space,” Dr. Simpson said. Other innovations include bubble curtains, which can wrap around a pile driver and insulate the sound.

The researchers also flagged deep-sea mining as an emergent industry that could become a major source of underwater noise, and suggested that new technologies could be designed to minimize sound before commercial mining starts.

The authors hope the review connects with policymakers, who have historically ignored noise as a significant anthropogenic stressor on marine life. The United Nations Law of the Sea B.B.N.J. agreement , a document that manages biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, does not mention noise among its list of cumulative impacts.

The U.N.’s 14th sustainable development goal, which focuses on underwater life, does not explicitly mention noise, according to Dr. Seger of Applied Ocean Sciences. “The U.N. had an ocean noise week where they sat down and listened to it and then went on to another topic,” she said.

The paper in Science went through three rounds of editing, the last of which occurred after Covid-19 had created many unplanned experiments: Shipping activity slowed down, the oceans fell relatively silent, and marine mammals and sharks returned to previously noisy waterways where they were rarely seen. “Recovery can be almost immediate,” Dr. Duarte said.

Alive with sound

A healthy ocean is not a silent ocean — hail crackling into white-crested waves, glaciers thudding into water, gases burbling from hydrothermal vents, and countless creatures chittering, rasping and singing are all signs of a normal environment. One of the 20 authors on the paper is the multimedia artist Jana Winderen , who created a six-minute audio track that shifts from a healthy ocean — the calls of bearded seals, snapping crustaceans and rain — to a disturbed ocean, with motorboats and pile driving.

A year ago, while studying invasive species in sea grass meadows in waters near Greece, Dr. Duarte was just about to come up for air when he heard a horrendous rumble above him: “a huge warship on top of me, going at full speed.” He stayed glued to the seafloor until the navy vessel passed, careful to slow down his breathing and not deplete his tank. Around 10 minutes later, the sound ebbed and Dr. Duarte was able to come up safely for air. “I have sympathy for these creatures,” he said.

When warships and other anthropogenic noises cease, sea grass meadows have a soundscape entirely their own. In the daytime, the photosynthesizing meadows generate tiny bubbles of oxygen that wobble up the water column, growing until they burst. All together, the bubble blasts make a scintillating sound like many little bells, beckoning larval fish to come home.

There is a need to take collective measures for minimizing the effects of noise pollution. How to control:

Stringent laws should be enacted and implemented to control noise pollution. Noise pollution can be controlled by reducing noise at source. Making a change in design and operation of machines, vibration control, by using sound absorbing materials, can reduce noise pollution. It can also be reduced by prescribing noise limits for vehicular traffic and planning industrial establishments, amusement areas, residential colonies and hospitals to make them noise proof. Noise pollution can be controlled by plantation of trees on road sides. At home we should avoid using the noisemakers like TV, Mixer , and Washing Machines etc. at a time. Everyone should be aware about noise pollution and take steps to contain it.

Lastly, noise pollution doesn’t just affect living beings. It also harms our environment. The loud sounds of construction, traffic, and industry can make it hard for plants to grow. They need a peaceful environment to thrive and noise pollution disrupts that peace.

Friends, today we will talk about a problem that often goes unnoticed – noise pollution. Just like air or water pollution, noise pollution is harmful, but not many of us are aware of it. Loud sounds around us all the time, like honking cars, loudspeakers, and construction work, are all sources of noise pollution.

Firstly, let’s understand what noise pollution is. It’s when the noise in our environment becomes too loud, disturbing and harmful. Imagine trying to study or sleep and a loud sound interrupts you. That’s noise pollution. It’s harmful just like dirty air or water, but it’s harder to see because it’s not something we can touch or see.

Now, let’s talk about where noise pollution comes from. Our everyday activities are a big source. The loud noise from traffic on busy roads, the sounds of construction work in our cities, the loud music from our radios and televisions, and even the constant noise from our household appliances – all these add to noise pollution.

You might be thinking, why is noise pollution a problem? Well, it harms us in many ways. It can make it hard for us to focus on our work or studies. It can cause stress and headaches. Over time, too much noise can even lead to hearing loss. But it’s not just us humans who are affected. Noise pollution also disturbs animals, especially birds and sea creatures who rely on sound for navigation and communication.

So, what can we do about noise pollution? There are many simple steps we can take. We can choose to use quieter machines and appliances. We can limit the use of loudspeakers. We can encourage the people around us to be quieter and more mindful of the noise they make. And most importantly, we must follow the rules on noise set by our local laws and regulations.

Our government can make and enforce laws that limit noise pollution.

Pollution is the result of dangerous compounds, or pollutants, interacting with the elements of the natural environment. There are many different types of pollution—soil, air, water, and land pollution. Whatever type of pollution it is, it has a negative impact on our environment, people, animals and ecosystem as a whole. Vehicles and Industrial waste that emit smoke into the air generate air pollution, which makes it difficult for all living things to breathe. For example, industrialization pollutes air and water bodies because manufacturing sectors produce a large amount of harmful pollutants in both gaseous and liquid forms. Lack of effective management causes these contaminants to be released into the environment, causing pollution of the air and water sources. Similarly, vehicles used for transportation run on fossil fuels, which when burned release dangerous chemicals like Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide etc.

These gases then interact with the atmosphere, generating air pollution that is the cause for several respiratory diseases and also result in genetic problems in both plants and animals. Even while human actions like deforestation didn't directly cause pollution, they nonetheless make the planet less able to combat it. Natural air filters and buffer zones are provided by forests. In addition to absorbing noise pollution, they also convert carbon dioxide into vital oxygen. When more forests are destroyed, the concentration of these harmful chemicals in the atmosphere rises, which has a negative impact on both human and animal health.

The natural order of our ecosystems has been disturbed by pollution, which has had serious negative impacts on the inhabitants of Earth. Unchecked and unlawful activities that abuse natural resources and disregard regulations established by pollution control boards around the nation are the main cause of pollution. A pollutant can be in any form. It might be a liquid, a solid, or even a gas. Industrialisation | Our pursuit of economic development has given rise to several industries around the world. As a result, many manufacturing businesses release harmful gases into the atmosphere. Industrial emissions may also include solids, chemicals, and harmful gases. These compounds are freely released into the environment by industries due to a lack of appropriate policies, which in turn results in environmental damage.

Fossil Fuels | The primary fuel for transportation vehicles is fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are byproducts of burning fossil fuels. The quantity of these harmful chemicals in the atmosphere increases as the number of automobiles on the road increases. Additionally, businesses that produce fossil fuels release toxic gaseous compounds that are particularly bad for the environment.

Heavy Machinery And Development | Every minute, new buildings are being built; within a few hours, people and equipment can be transported between locations using large jet liners and transportation vehicles. The biggest sources of noise pollution are these large equipment used in construction and aircrafts. Despite not being as serious as air and water pollution, noise pollution nevertheless has a negative influence on both the environment and human health.

Agricultural Activities | Agricultural practices, such as the use of chemical fertilisers, damage the soil, causing soil pollution. Modern fertilisers contain chemicals that, while temporarily increasing crop productivity, are bad for the environment in the long run. These substances mix with the soil and are later carried away by runoff into our surface and groundwater supplies.

How To Combat Pollution

After becoming aware of the damaging effects of pollution, everyone has a duty to take steps to prevent it. We should be aware of every precaution that can be taken to reduce pollution. For instance, we should avoid using fireworks during celebrations, use public transit or carpool, use loudspeakers sparingly, and stop from honking in public to lessen noise pollution. We must keep this situation in mind at all times so that we can react appropriately. It is our responsibility to practise caution and spread awareness among people around us at first. We should take actions that are good for the environment, including planting more trees, using less plastic, using more eco-friendly household items, etc.When addressing global pollution, always keep in mind that every small action now will have a greater impact tomorrow.

3 دسمبر 1984ء کو بھارت کے شہر بھوپال میں کیڑے مارنے والی ادویات کا دھواں اور زہریلی گیس کے خارج ہونے سے 3000 افراد ہلاک ہو گئے تھے۔ اس قسم کے حادثات امریکہ میں بھی ہوئے۔ امریکی ریاست ورجنیا میں کیمیکل فیکٹری سے زہریلی گیس کے خارج ہونے سے 100 افراد لقمہ اجل بن گئے تھے۔فضائی آلودگی سے آنکھوں اور پھیپھڑوں کو سخت نقصان ہوتا ہے۔ بعض حالتوں میں کینسر جیسے موذی مرض کے بھی لوگ شکا ر ہوئے ہیں۔ بعض مختلف بیماریوں کے باعث مرگئے۔ زہریلی فضائی آلودگی سے قیمتی اور نایاب پرندے بھی ہلاک ہو گئے کئی جانور بھی مر گئے۔ ان کی تعدار بھی کم ہو رہی ہے۔ کئی شکاریوں نے بعض خوبصورت پرندے اور نایاب جانور پکڑ کربلیک مارکیٹ میں بھاری معاوضہ کے عوض فروخت کر دیئے۔

آسڑیلیاں کا لمبی دم والا 4 رنگ کا خوبصورت طوطا (MACAW) 20,000 ڈالر میں فروخت ہوتا ہے۔ مڈغا سکر کاکچھوا (PLOWSHARE) بھی 20,000 ڈالر میں ملتا ہے۔ بعد نایاب قسم کے پرندے اور جانور 50,000 ڈالر میں فروخت ہوتے ہیں۔ اتنا بھاری معاوضہ دینے والوں کا کہنا ہے ۔ کہ کم نے اس قسم کے جانور اور پرندوں کی نسل بچانے کیلئے یہ رقم دی ہے۔ اتنی رقم دینے والی امریکی سرمایہ کار اور برونئی کے شاہ ہیں۔ ماحولیاتی آلودگی اور اوزون کی تہہ سے خلا کے باعث ہماری زمین تک پہنچنے والی الٹراوئلٹ شعاعیں ہماری فضاء کو خطرناک حد تک گرم کر رہی ہیں۔ جس سے دنیا کی حرارت میں ایک ڈگری سینٹی گریڈ اضافہ ہو چکا ہے ۔ اگر یہی حالت رہی تو جانوروں اور پودوں کو نقصان پہنچے گا۔ انسانوں میں جلد کا کینسر پھیل جانے کا بھی امکان ہے۔اگر قطب جنوبی پر برف پگھلنا شروع ہو گئی تو یہ خوفناک سیلابوں اور طوفانوں کا سبب بنے گی۔

اسلام آباد میں ماحولیاتی آلودگی پر انٹرنیشنل سیمینار میں اس امر کا خدشہ ظاہر کیا گیا ہے کہ ایشیاء کے چند ممالک بے حد متاثر ہوں گے ۔ سمندروں میں پانی کی زیادتی سے سری لنکا اور کرچی پانی میں ڈوب جائیں گے اور بنگلہ دیش کا کچھ حصہ کاکسس بازار اور میمن سنگھ کے علاوہ سلہٹ کے ڈوب جانے کا بھی امکان ہے ۔ اس آلودگی میں نائٹروجن ڈائی آکسائیڈ ، گند ھک ، کاربن مونو آکسائیڈ اور کلورو فلور کاربن شامل ہیں ۔ ان زہریلی گیسوں کی وجہ سے ہم پھیپھڑوں کی سوزش ، کالی کھانسی ، نمونیا اور انفلوئنزا جیسے خطرناک امراض کا شکار ہوسکتے ہیں۔ عالمی ادارہ صحت کی رپورٹ کے مطابق دنیا کے 80 کروڑ افراد کو ہوا میں سلفر ڈائی آکسائیڈ کی غیر معمولی مقدار کا سامنا ہے۔ رپورٹ میں بتایا گیا ہے۔ کہ فضائی آلودگی کے باعث تین ہزار افراد کینسر کا شکار ہو کر اس دنیا سے رخصت ہو گئے۔

آواز ہماے کانوں میں میکانی توانائی کی لہروں کی صورت میں داخل ہوتی ہے۔ آواز کی شدت کی پیمائش ڈیسی مل کہلاتی ہے۔ 90 ڈیسی مل تک آوازیں نقصان دہ نہیں ہوتیں ۔ اس سے زیادہ بلند آواز نقصان دہ ہوتی ہے۔ قریب سے زیادہ زور وار آواز سماعت کو ختم کر سکتی ہے۔ جس کا کوئی علاج نہیں ہے اور مریض کو اعلیٰ سماعت کا استعمال کرنا پڑتا ہے۔ شہروں میں موٹر گاڑیوں کی آوازیں ، جہازوں کی آوازیں ، کارخانوں میں مشینوں کی آوازیں ، میوزک کنسرٹ آوازیں 120 ڈیسی مل تک پہنچ جاتی ہیں۔ جو خطرے کا باعث ہیں ۔ یہ آوازیں ہوائی حملے کے دوران بجنے والے سائرن کی آواز کے برابر ہیں آوازیں بلڈ پریشر اور دل کے مریضوں کیلئے خطرناک ہیں ۔ شور کے ماحول میں رہنے سے ذہنی دباؤ تھکن ، سانس کی تکلیف اور نیند میں کمی کی بیماریاں جنم لیتی ہیں ۔

پانی کی آلودگی:-

دو عالمی جنگوں کے تباہ کن اثرات کی بنا پر جرمنی میں لوگ عام نلکوں کا پانی نہیں پیتے ۔ اس پانی سے پاقی ضروریات پوری کرتے ہیں۔پینے کیلئے سارہ منرل واٹر یا لیمن واٹر کا استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ جرمن ڈاکٹروں کا کہنا ہے کہ فضایہ آلودگی اور جنگی اثرات ابھی تک جرمنی کی زمین میں شامل ہیں ۔ فضائی آلودہ پانی دیکھنے میں صاف نظر آتا ہے۔ لیکن اس میں جراثیم ہوتے ہیں ۔جو باعث تکلیف ، بیماری اورر موت کا باعث بنتے ہیں۔ جرمنی کی کیمیکل اور دیگر فیکٹریوں سے خارج ہونے والے مضر پانی میں فیکٹری ایریا سے باہر خارج ہونے سے پہلے ایسے کیمیکل ڈال دیے جاتے ہیں جو فضا میں خطرناک آلودگی کا باعث نہ بن سکیں لیکن یہ احتیاط دوسرے کی ملک میں نہیں کی جاتی ۔

You can define the environment as the sum total of all the surroundings of a living organism. It includes the physical and chemical elements and other natural forces. Everything around you makes up your environment. It is the natural world in which humans, animals, plants, and hundreds of thousands of other creatures live and reproduce.

According to P. Gisbert, there are four types of environments, namely, natural, artificial, social, and psychological. Marshal Jones talked about three kinds of environment, that is, physical, social, and cultural. Kimbal Young divided the environment into two types, viz. geographic and socio-cultural.

Environmental pollution refers to the contamination of the natural surroundings with different pollutants that cause adverse change. Environmental pollutants include chemical substances, heat, noise, and light.

Based on the type of pollutant, there can be several types of environmental pollution. They include air pollution, water pollution, thermal pollution, light pollution, noise pollution, visual pollution, soil contamination, littering, and radioactive contamination. Here the visual pollution refers to open storage of trash and solid waste and the presence of motorway billboards and overhead power lines.

A report published in "The Guardian" in 2017 claimed that global pollution is killing around 9 million people a year and that it is threatening the survival of human societies. According to the landmark study, toxic water, air, soil, and workplace kill millions of people and incur the loss of trillions of dollars every year.

The toxic or polluted environment causes diseases which kill one in every six individuals around the world. The deaths resulting from pollution are triple those from tuberculosis, malaria, and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) combined.

The poorer nations are the ones most affected by pollution-related deaths. For example, pollution is responsible for a quarter of all deaths in the countries, like India, Madagascar, and Chad. The modern forms of pollution are affecting the developed countries, like the US and Japan. Chemical pollution and fossil fuel-related air pollution are some of the modern forms of pollution.
