8 Thottakkal review: A satisfying thriller that could have been trimmed a bit
The beginning of ‘8 Thottakkal’ sets the tone for the reminder of the film. A young boy named Sathya (Vetri) witnesses an obscene murder and the killer, finding an opportunity to get away, frames it such that Sathya gets arrested and is thrown into a juvenile prison. Mild and timid in character, Sathya is scared and gets into his shell without much hopes and dreams.
Fast forward a number of years and Sathya is now out of jail, and in a sense, has come around to own his fears and become the person that he dreaded of in his younger days: a police officer. An extremely good cop who is just satisfied with helping others, Sathya is nonetheless the timid old self. If wrongfully being thrown into jail in his younger years wasn’t traumatic enough, Sathya is to now undergo another distressing test. He loses his pistol that is loaded with 8 possibly fateful bullets, and what more, the gun lands in the hands of a thieving schmuck.
His superiors, Gunasekaran (Mime Gopi) & co are corrupt and care for nothing more than their own advancement. The fact that he is close to a journalist Meera (Aparna Balamurali) who is at odds with his boss forms more schisms that he could do without. And now, his job (and his peace of mind) is at stake with the loss of his gun. Could he retrieve it in time before blood is spilled and save his job? This forms the reminder of edge of the seat thriller.
Directed by debutante Sri Ganesh, a former assistant to Mysshkin, ‘8 Thottakkal’ real strength is the connectivity that exists between the characters and the incidents. There’s a natural (and uncomfortable) relationship that exist between the cops and the criminals, and this tension will keep you interested. Will Sathya, after undergoing such traumatic incidents, become a criminal himself? What about the backstories of the criminals, which sounds all too familiar to that of Sathya’s? These anticipations will keep your mind occupied as the film rolls along.
‘8 Thottakkal’ isn’t without its downsides though. The acting is hit or miss - Vetri could have elevated himself a bit, while MS Bhaskar as Krishnamoorthy does a splendid job. It is his career best. Debutant Aparna is impressive. Nasser floors you off with his natural act. Parts of the movie move along at a slow pace, which reflects in the final run time. The long drawn out monologue by Bhaskar with no solid interesting content in the pre-climax tests your patience, and Ganesh could have done away with it.
But these could easily be overlooked for the good qualities mentioned above.
Overall, ‘8 Thottakkal’ is a satisfying thriller that could have been trimmed a bit. Don’t let the talkative portions of the film discourage you from hitting the theaters though. Competent debutantes have a certain degree of rawness that the seasoned technician often lacks, and Sri Ganesh’s writing is filled with genuine amounts of emotion.

8 Thottakkal Review - Radically different

8 Thottakkal - Radically different
Bharath Vijayakumar
Director Sri Ganesh makes an assured debut with 8 Thottakkal. These days you do not often see traits of their mentors in the works of most filmmakers. Sri Ganesh is an exception and surprises you in a good way. You can clearly see the influence of Mysskin in his work. The director also lists down all his references/inspirations in the filmography slide at the end. 8 Thottakkal isn't your average thriller. It is more of a fascinating character study.
A honest sub inspector loses his pistol which ends up in a crime scene.
For most of the initial half , 8 Thottakkal is more of a thriller and it operates on an investigative mode. These portions are lively and have a certain novelty in narration. It is the slightly limited acting prowess of the leads that is the only handicap in these portions. Slowly and without you actually realizing it, the film which was till now operating from the POV of sub inspector Sathya (Vettri) makes an interesting and bold move and the narrative is now through the eyes of Moorthy ( M.S. Bhaskar). M.S. Bhaskar comes up with a performance that leaves you in awe. You know his potential and have seen him score earlier. But he was just a part in those films. Here he runs the show and it is one hell of a show. It is a character and a performance that asks you a lot of difficult questions on morality. When you are consistently put down for being a honest person in an unjust society and when the suffering becomes unbearable how do you cope up? What if you wake up one day and decide to show that you can be evil as well?
If there is one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb it is the picturisation of the songs and their placement. Even the term commercial compulsion does not make sense if it is going to be unintentionally comical as it is here.
Bottomline:
Quite a deep film that has so much going for it. If Sri Ganesh concentrates solely on his strengths, he could well be one of the torchbearers of Tamil cinema in the near future.

8 Thottakkal Movie Review: 8 Thottakkal Review, 8 Thottakkal Movie Review, 8 Thottakkal Audience Ratings, 8 Thottakkal Film Review
8 Thottakkal is the latest entrant to join the pleasantly fast growing list of newcomers' films making a huge bang at the box office. This film is directed by Sri Ganesh and produced by Big Print Pictures & Vetrivel Saravanan Cinemas. The cast includes Vetri, Aparna Balamurali, MS Bhaskar, Nasser and others. The horror season has slowed down and now Kollywood has turned its attention towards a couple of promising cop stories, in recent times. 8 Thottakkal seamlessly joins the line-up of movies like Dhuruvangal 16 and Kuttram 23. The movie follows the relentless search of a naïve and soft-spoken cop, who tries to find a culprit and relieve himself from the situation he has gotten into. Thumbs Up: • The screenplay is catchy with unexpected plot points which keep the movie gripping till the end. • A promising performance by actors like Vetri and other newcomers. • MS Bhaskar steals the show with his versatility • Music by Sundaramurthy RS is another plus for the movie Thumbs Down: • Despite being good, the placement of the songs slow down the screenplay and the racy narration a little. • The film's run time could be trimmed a little to maintain the tight screenplay. Verdict: An edge-of-the-seat racy detective story that's unpredictable and keeps throwing surprises at every turn!

8 Thottakkal Tamil Movie
As I was watching this movie, I could sense where the thematic inspiration came from. I bow before the director of this movie, Sri Ganesh, solely for crediting the creators (during the end credits) whose works that have got him inspired.
He has given credits to Akira Kurosawa, Mysskin and Vince Gilligan among other legendary names. Vince Gilligan as some of you might be knowing is the writer of "Breaking Bad", a path-breaking Hollywood television series that had a successful run from 2008 to 2013 and remains as one of the top-rated series till now.
I was also able to see Breaking Bad posters splattered on the walls in a particular scene, which also served as the "tipping point" for the movie. Apart from the other subtle references, the story and screenplay deftly pay tribute to the famous television series. I am certainly not complaining about it as the writing was adapted for our ethos and the characters were deep rooted with different shades.
The story is about Sathya (Vetri) who grows up in a juvenile prison after being forcefully framed for a murder. The prison warden gets to know of Sathya's plight and takes pity on him. He makes sure that Sathya joins the police force when he grows up, even though Sathya hates the job. According to his wish, Sathya becomes a cop. He neither actively partakes in any case nor takes any bribe. When he finally gets to handle a case, he loses his pistol with 8 bullets loaded into it. His pursuit to recovering the pistol and the consequences of the pistol ending up in wrong hands forms the rest of the movie.
The plot was unique and juicy enough for a cop thriller. I loved the characterisation of MS Bhaskar and Nassar as their characters were etched out with several intricate layers and were prodded every now and then to showcase them.
The lead pair who were making their debut - Vetri and Aparna Balamurali, were not troubled much to deliver the goods, especially, Vetri had some wooden expressions and appeared to be a beaten down version of Vijay Antony in terms of performance. Thankfully his character was offbeat and so it augured well.
The plot was well connected and the "Breaking Bad" theme was well adapted to suit our ethos. A calm and timid man turning violent and bracing immorality are certainly not new, but the way in which it was showcased along with twists was a tidy piece of writing - a great example for adapted screenplay writing and a lesson for the story lifters who blatantly copy every scene while "getting inspired".
The movie could have been done without unnecessary songs, better lead actors and some more pace without prolonging more on the emotional rhetorics, but still the movie held its breath till the last and delivered solid thrills.
Debutante Sri Ganesh who turns out to be a former assistant of Mysskin has certainly picked up screenwriting skills from his mentor. He has to, however, smoothen the rough edges, but otherwise, he has given a palatable thriller in the form of '8 thottakkal'!

In the recent times, few low budget films with a blunt intact brilliant writing have been evoking good response. It all started off with the film ‘Dhuruvangal 16’, which continues to now have its realms with movie ‘8 Thottakkal’. Though incomparable on genres, it goes through the same dimension of mystery thriller genre. Sri Ganesh, a former associate of Mysskin comes up with a nitty-gritty thriller that stars debutant Vetri and Malayalam actress Aparna Balamurali in lead roles with important roles played by Nasser and MS Bhaskar.
A film manages to keep us intact and occupied if they are perfect on these two criteria – Gripping Narration and strong characterizations. Over here Sri Ganesh has managed to stick very well to these quotients. There are few moments that involve the episodes of Vetri and Aparna. They look sweet, but they don’t adhere well to the fast-proceeding narration, which looks like a speed breaker. Nevertheless, it would have its appreciation among the ordinary audiences, who aren’t particular about critical analysis.
The plot revolves around protagonist Vetri who after serving sentence at juvenile prison becomes a cop. But unfortunately, the gun with bullets provided by the department goes missing and during this interim, lots of misfortunes happen including a bank robbery and a girl’s life is culminated. Having been suspended from the job, it’s up to Vetri to get back his gun and he gets the help of a police officer (Nasser), who is investigating the bank robbery.
One thing that instantly keeps us engrossed is that director doesn’t tend to slip down anywhere into the fallible zones. Right from the word ‘Go’, we are kept intact that proceeds well with the premise and there is no inclusion of unwanted comedy tracks and songs. In few places as mentioned earlier, the sequences involving Vetri and Aparna might are enjoyable, but look slightly sluggish. MS Bhaskar steals the show with an immense performance and he almost shows up like a parallel hero. Nasser is excellent and Mime Gopi does his job with perfection.
There are few logical quotients missing here and there, but they get diminished with the gripping narration, especially during second half that leads to unexpected twist by the climax.
Overall, 8 Thottakkal is a good attempt and will have its decorous reception among the audiences for a different attempt and engaging screenplay.

The film starts with an orphaned boy, Sathya, getting framed by the employer for the murder of his wife and is sent to juvenile. He befriends the warden, who helps him secure the sub inspector job.
Sathya remembers what his warden taught him and stays honest in his profession. Unlike the other policemen at his station, he refuses to be involved in bribes and is made an outcast. One day, Sathya helps a writer who is beaten by his corrupt inspector, Gunasekaran. Thinking that Sathya is trying to become a hero by making him look bad, Guna plans to shame Sathya. Guna then arranges for Sathya to shadow a dangerous gangster. While shadowing the gangster, he loses his gun, fully loaded with 8 bullets. Guna gives Sathya one day to find his lost gun or face disciplinary action.
With the help of a reporter friend, Meera, Sathya nabs the boy who pickpocketed his gun, but the boy has sold the gun. The guy who bought the gun attempts a bank robbery along with two other men, and in the process, he accidentally shoots and kills a little girl. Meera, in danger of losing her job, tells her superiors about the case, it goes viral, and Sathya is suspended from duty. Sathya hides from the police as he will be arrested, and is tracked down by Pandian, the new handler of the case. Pandian says that if Sathya was a real policeman, he should never stop searching, which causes Sathya to join him.
Meanwhile, one of the robbers tries to buy his girlfriend a necklace for her birthday and takes all the fresh notes available, despite the boss's opposition. In the jewelry shop, he is exposed as the police kept track of the serial number of the fresh notes. He escapes the arrest and goes to get his share. After a confrontation with the boss, he tries to steal all the money and the leader shoots and kills him. The remaining two dispose of the body. The second robber, fearing he also will be shot dead by the boss, contacts the police. When the police attempt to arrest the boss with a ploy, the boss shoots and kills the second robber and made sure there is no one left to connect him with the robber.
Sathya meets an old policeman, Krishnamurthy, who got suspended for letting a terrorist slip away as a constable. It turns out that Guna accepted a bribe from the terrorist and let him go, but this has already ruined Murthy's profession. Sathya talks to Murthy about life and how things have changed. After this, Murthy sees the man who sold him the gun and leaves. Murthy kills him with the same gun when he follows Murthy to a restroom. However, we learn that Murthy is actually the leader of the robbery, and he kills the officer who did not sanction his Provident Fund. Sathya, now looking for clues in the murder, finds Murthy's application sanctioned and goes to his house to give it to him. However, Murthy's son tells him that the application got sanctioned earlier, and Murthy gave the money to the family, by connecting the murder of the guy who sold the gun and Murthy's son's statement, he figures out that Murthy is the robber and the boss.
Meanwhile, Murthy follows Guna to a bank and attempts another robbery and kills him, after which he throws the money on the street. When Murthy returns home, he finds out that the police have surrounded him. Pandian takes Murthy's grandson hostage, and there is a confrontation in which Sathya walks out with his gun . He later tells the investigation board that Murthy shot Pandian dead and Sathya had killed Murthy in self-defense. Sathya is given his job back.
As Sathya drives with Meera, she tells him that he should not feel bad for Murthy as he was a bad person. We are shown what actually happens in that room. Pandian, with his gun on Murthy's grandson's head, slips, and a shot is fired. Murthy, in shock, shoots and kills Pandian, but it turns out that Pandian missed and did not hit Murthy's grandson. Sathya grabs Murthy and fights him but cannot hurt him as he feels sorry for him. Murthy stands up, grabs the gun, and tells Sathya to shoot him. He then explains that he did not tell his family about his cancer because he heard the family speaking about why God did not take him instead of his wife. He then says he robbed the bank for them and that he wanted to live his last days like a king. Murthy also says he did not mean to shoot the child and breaks down. Murthy grabs Sathya's hands, puts the gun to his forehead and says he does not want to put the family in shame by going to prison. He then shoots himself dead with the last bullet when Sathya hesitates.
After this flashback, at a stoplight, Sathya sees the employer that framed him, on the side of the street, and the movie ends.
