8 Thottakkal review: A satisfying thriller that could have been trimmed a bit

8 thottakkal movie review

The beginning of ‘8 Thottakkal’ sets the tone for the reminder of the film. A young boy named Sathya (Vetri) witnesses an obscene murder and the killer, finding an opportunity to get away, frames it such that Sathya gets arrested and is thrown into a juvenile prison. Mild and timid in character, Sathya is scared and gets into his shell without much hopes and dreams.

Fast forward a number of years and Sathya is now out of jail, and in a sense, has come around to own his fears and become the person that he dreaded of in his younger days: a police officer. An extremely good cop who is just satisfied with helping others, Sathya is nonetheless the timid old self. If wrongfully being thrown into jail in his younger years wasn’t traumatic enough, Sathya is to now undergo another distressing test. He loses his pistol that is loaded with 8 possibly fateful bullets, and what more, the gun lands in the hands of a thieving schmuck.

His superiors, Gunasekaran (Mime Gopi) & co are corrupt and care for nothing more than their own advancement. The fact that he is close to a journalist Meera (Aparna Balamurali) who is at odds with his boss forms more schisms that he could do without. And now, his job (and his peace of mind) is at stake with the loss of his gun. Could he retrieve it in time before blood is spilled and save his job? This forms the reminder of edge of the seat thriller.

Directed by debutante Sri Ganesh, a former assistant to Mysshkin, ‘8 Thottakkal’ real strength is the connectivity that exists between the characters and the incidents. There’s a natural (and uncomfortable) relationship that exist between the cops and the criminals, and this tension will keep you interested. Will Sathya, after undergoing such traumatic incidents, become a criminal himself? What about the backstories of the criminals, which sounds all too familiar to that of Sathya’s? These anticipations will keep your mind occupied as the film rolls along.

‘8 Thottakkal’ isn’t without its downsides though. The acting is hit or miss - Vetri could have elevated himself a bit, while MS Bhaskar as Krishnamoorthy does a splendid job. It is his career best. Debutant Aparna is impressive. Nasser floors you off with his natural act. Parts of the movie move along at a slow pace, which reflects in the final run time. The long drawn out monologue by Bhaskar with no solid interesting content in the pre-climax tests your patience, and Ganesh could have done away with it.

But these could easily be overlooked for the good qualities mentioned above.

Overall, ‘8 Thottakkal’ is a satisfying thriller that could have been trimmed a bit. Don’t let the talkative portions of the film discourage you from hitting the theaters though. Competent debutantes have a certain degree of rawness that the seasoned technician often lacks, and Sri Ganesh’s writing is filled with genuine amounts of emotion.

8 Thottakkal Movie Review

8 Thottakkal Movie Review

Language: Tamil

Director: Sri Ganesh,

Cast: Vettri, Nasser, Aparna Balamurali, MS Baskar

Rarely have I heard a film's leading man dismissed with such exquisite contempt: " Mudhugelumbu illadha oru nallavan !" (A spineless saint!) Part of the powerlessness we sense in the character – a sub-inspector named Sathya – is surely due to the ineffectiveness of the actor, a newcomer named Vettri.

He's terribly stiff. There's no strength, no confidence. It seems to take him effort just to part his lips and say his lines. But luckily, the story plays on this very (lack of) quality. The first time we see Sathya as a grown-up, it's the voice you notice, the meekness with which he answers a superior. One gets the feeling Vettri didn't have to act. He just had to be.

The director, Sri Ganesh, was an assistant of Mysskin, and you can sense a similar love for formal (and yes, showy) rigour. A superbly constructed canteen scene involving a slow zoom-in/zoom-out – locating a man in this world, and then slowly isolating him through a close-up, as the others fall off the frame, then bringing them back (the shots linger just an extra beat or two) – is right out of the Mysskin playbook. As is the choreography in the scene involving four people, two of them with guns, in a locked room. As is the hat tip to Eastern cinema. The story is adapted from Akira Kurosawa's Stray Dog .

Vettri's terribly stiff. There's no strength, no confidence. It seems to take him effort just to part his lips and say his lines. But luckily, the story plays on this very (lack of) quality

I mean it when I say "adapted." The similarities stop with the plot: a rookie cop's gun is stolen when he is taking a ride in public transport, and he teams up with a veteran (Pandian, played delightfully by Nasser) to track down the weapon's new owner, who has begun to unleash a wave of crime.

But here's the twist on the Kurosawa film: this criminal is no "stray dog." He isn't a rabid, deranged menace on the streets. He is on a cold, calculated path of revenge – against the people who wronged him, and also against Fate. The title – 8 Thottakkal (8 Bullets) – suggests excitement. The tone suggests existentialism.

Sri Ganesh writes odd, lovely scenes. Like the one where a sympathetic man gives a little boy a laddu . It's the man's birthday, and he says – somewhat creepily, making you fear the worst – " Un kitta mattum sollanum-nu thonichu ." (I felt like telling you, and no one else.) And there's an entire eccentric episode built around a man who takes issue with a swear word. This sequence involves a jeweller. Much later, we get a sequence set in a jewellery shop. The connections are odd and lovely too.

Most films give us a setting. 8 Thottakkal gives us a (Mysskin-like) universe, where actions have reactions, where the cuteness of children is no guarantee that they won't end up collateral damage. (We see this even with the young Sathya.) People who go in expecting a thriller may end up disappointed, for there's something more, the constant sense of something… cosmic. It's there in the meticulously crafted mood. It's there in the lines.

Pandian orders a juvenile delinquent to be beaten up. He says the boy needs pain. That's the thing that will change him. Had this been typical Tamil cinema, the meaning would have just resided in just the words, and line would have become a message. But in Sri Ganesh's world, it becomes koan-like philosophy.

Most films give us a setting. 8 Thottakkal gives us a (Mysskin-like) universe, where actions have reactions, where the cuteness of children is no guarantee that they won't end up collateral damage

8 Thottakkal isn't perfect. It's self-indulgent. There are rough edges. It's too long. The symbolism in the last shot (after an eye-roll of a coincidental person-sighting) is too on-the-nose. There's an abstract dance sequence – Astad Deboo in Aminjikarai, featuring extras in kabuki face paint – that's so tonally off, it comes off as unintentional comedy. The situation is supposed to exemplify the troubled relationship between Sathya and Meera (Aparna Balamurali), but the couple has barely spoken a few words, and a song seems like serious overkill.

But overreach is easy to forgive when there's evidence of vision, and the talent to pull it off. The characters are beautifully written. The criminal who has an unexpected family life. The child-murderer who cherishes his grandson. The thief who, even while fleeing the jewellery store after cops arrive, takes a moment to snatch a necklace for his married lover. The man who decides to restore some balance in the universe by littering the street with currency notes.

The actors don't always match up to the characters, but MS Baskar is magnificent. It's the best performance-you-did-not-see-coming since Radha Ravi's heart-rending turn in Pisaasu .

I kept thinking about the film long after it ended. I kept thinking about the funny lines, as when a gangster says he is so close to someone that they practically eat off the same plate. (The payoff is killer!) I kept thinking about the sad lines, as when the criminal apologises to the clueless cop for ruining his day. I kept thinking about how we discover Sathya loves Meera. He tells her about his past. She shrinks away. Later, he explains the extenuating circumstances. Why didn't he tell her earlier? Because he doesn't have to justify himself to everyone. That's when we realise Meera is not "everyone." Which leads to this dilemma. If someone who was good to you ends up wronging you, are you now supposed to look at the extenuating circumstances?

8 Thottakkal reminds you of a film like Anjaathey , where you walk in expecting a tale of cops and robbers and walk out having experienced a tale of right and wrong, good and evil, man and his milieu.

'8 Thottakkal' review: Lures you with the promise of thrills and holds you with its emotional story

'8 Thottakkal' review: Lures you with the promise of thrills and holds you with its emotional story

8 Thottakkal  is the kind of film you don’t get to see very much these days – rich in story, but ambivalent in tone.

It’s not a morality tale, except perhaps to say that sometimes things happen. Instead,  8 Thottakkal  spends its time layering its characters, giving them narrative arcs that make them not so much objects of love or hate, but people you can relate to as creatures with the simplest motivations – to live, to love, to matter.

At the heart of the film are one gun, eight bullets, and a crime that no one expected, not even its perpetrators. Around it are arranged a number of characters – cops, criminals and bystanders, all of whom bring very interesting baggage to the cat-and-mouse game.

As a thriller,  8 Thottakkal  struggles with some obvious missteps. Debutant director Sri Ganesh, a former assistant of Mysskin’s, certainly has the skills for a superb foray into the genre. The way that he takes a straightforward tale and builds in kinks, twists and tangents, and keeps the story on a slow boil throughout, proves that he’s suited for thrillers.

But he still has some way to go in terms of getting the pacing and the distribution of the film’s various elements right. In particular, the songs in the film act as annoying speedbreakers to the narrative, throwing off the rhythm of the film.

And Sri Ganesh also makes some obvious mistakes in terms of the details of a police procedural. But considering that Indian films have rarely paid much attention to the nitty-gritties of police procedure, this is not as unforgivable an error.

Where Sri Ganesh really succeeds, and what makes this such an exciting film, is the something extra that emerges in the form of textured, engaging stories. None of the characters in the film is unbelievable or unusual. Instead, their very regularity makes them thoroughly captivating.

And in this he’s aided by his cast. No one does it better than MS Bhaskar as Moorthy. His rendition of the good, obedient man who finally snaps is pitch-perfect – from the bluff bravado on the outside to the quiet desperation on the inside.

Nasser is also effortless in his role as the worldly top investigator. Perhaps the only disappointment in the film is Vetri, whose performance is even more diminutive than the spineless goodness of the protagonist Sathya demands.

8 Thottakkal  is not quite a chase film, not quite a great battle of good and evil. Instead it’s a small film about small people with big problems. And what emerges is a big story that’s thoroughly worth your while.

8 Thottakkal: Engaging thriller let down by lengthy sequences

A promising effort from a first-time director.

Updated - April 07, 2017 06:43 pm IST

Published - April 07, 2017 09:37 am IST

Srinivasa Ramanujam

8 Thottakkal opens in black and white. A young boy has witnessed a murder. That’s quite convenient for the killer, who ensures that the child is put behind bars of a juvenile prison.

When light breaks out on the big screen, all the colour’s gone on the face of young Sathya, who is standing in a line of young prisoners. He’s afraid. He is, after all, in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. He’s frightened when someone asks him if he wants to become a policeman in the future. ‘Police velai ah? Vendam ,’ (I’d never become a cop) he shrieks.

That’s exactly what he becomes, many years later. At the West Mambalam police station, Sathya (Vetri) is a sort of a loner, a do-gooder who minds his own business. When someone’s complaint is unheeded, he helps. He’s the good guy in bad company.

And bad things come to good guys too, we learn in a bit, when Sathya loses his official weapon–something he’s signed for in the police station. It’s a Bruni with eight bullets, and it’s out there in a big city.

The gun ends up in the hands of a gang of like-minded men in pursuit of big bucks. The basic storyline of 8 Thotattakkal is straight out of the pages of a crime thriller, where the need to know what-next is top priority.

  • Director: Sri Ganesh
  • Genre: Thriller
  • Cast: Vetri, M.S.Bhaskar, Aparna, Nasser
  • Storyline: A cop loses his gun, which lands in the hands of people in pursuit of money

It’s a script that’s surely the result of some serious brain-work on the part of director Sri Ganesh, who’s not far behind the rich crop of promising debut filmmakers we’ve had in recent times (Karthik Naren and Lokesh Kanagaraj with Dhruvangal 16 and Maanagaram respectively). There’s promise in the writing, thought in the execution. I loved the way we learn about the back-stories of the three characters (Murthy, Kathir and Jai) and why they needed the money so desperately. There are three wonderful little tales – of a man who’s ignored by his family, of a man who’s having an affair, of a man who wants to get his sister married. Different social backgrounds but the same goal: money.

The one who stands out is M.S. Bhaskar, who’s terrific as Krishnamoorty. In one of his best roles so far, Bhaskar scores big time – dominating and quivering as and when the need arises. Nasser is in good form, and so are Manikandan and Lallu.

But the same cannot be said of Vetri. He certainly looks the part, but is hardly convincing as someone who’s under immense duress. It certainly doesn’t help that the director saddles on him a love interest (Aparna Balamurali) and throws in a few songs that have absolutely no relevance to the scheme of things. There are also some places I found 8 Thottakkal rather conversational, rather dialogue-y… things that have no business in a thriller. Had those been trimmed, it would have surely found its way to the recent debut-director-strikes-big league currently occupied by the makers of Dhruvangal 16 and Maanagaram .

Writer & Director : Sri Ganesh Producer : M Vellapandiyan Cast : Vetri, Aparna Balamurali, Nassar, M.S. Bhaskar Music : Sundaramurthy K S Cinematography : Dinesh K Babu Editor : Nagooran Production company : Big Print Pictures, Vetrivel Saravana Cinemas Running Time : 145 mins

In the recent times, few low budget films with a blunt intact brilliant writing have been evoking good response. It all started off with the film ‘Dhuruvangal 16’, which continues to now have its realms with movie ‘8 Thottakkal’. Though incomparable on genres, it goes through the same dimension of mystery thriller genre. Sri Ganesh, a former associate of Mysskin comes up with a nitty-gritty thriller that stars debutant Vetri and Malayalam actress Aparna Balamurali in lead roles with important roles played by Nasser and MS Bhaskar.

A film manages to keep us intact and occupied if they are perfect on these two criteria – Gripping Narration and strong characterizations. Over here Sri Ganesh has managed to stick very well to these quotients. There are few moments that involve the episodes of Vetri and Aparna. They look sweet, but they don’t adhere well to the fast-proceeding narration, which looks like a speed breaker. Nevertheless, it would have its appreciation among the ordinary audiences, who aren’t particular about critical analysis.

The plot revolves around protagonist Vetri who after serving sentence at juvenile prison becomes a cop. But unfortunately, the gun with bullets provided by the department goes missing and during this interim, lots of misfortunes happen including a bank robbery and a girl’s life is culminated. Having been suspended from the job, it’s up to Vetri to get back his gun and he gets the help of a police officer (Nasser), who is investigating the bank robbery.

One thing that instantly keeps us engrossed is that director doesn’t tend to slip down anywhere into the fallible zones. Right from the word ‘Go’, we are kept intact that proceeds well with the premise and there is no inclusion of unwanted comedy tracks and songs. In few places as mentioned earlier, the sequences involving Vetri and Aparna might are enjoyable, but look slightly sluggish. MS Bhaskar steals the show with an immense performance and he almost shows up like a parallel hero. Nasser is excellent and Mime Gopi does his job with perfection.

There are few logical quotients missing here and there, but they get diminished with the gripping narration, especially during second half that leads to unexpected twist by the climax.

Overall, 8 Thottakkal is a good attempt and will have its decorous reception among the audiences for a different attempt and engaging screenplay.

8 Thottakkal Review - Radically different

8 Thottakkal - Radically different

Bharath Vijayakumar

Director Sri Ganesh makes an assured debut with 8 Thottakkal. These days you do not often see traits of their mentors in the works of most filmmakers. Sri Ganesh is an exception and surprises you in a good way. You can clearly see the influence of Mysskin in his work. The director also lists down all his references/inspirations in the filmography slide at the end. 8 Thottakkal isn't your average thriller. It is more of a fascinating character study.

A honest sub inspector loses his pistol which ends up in a crime scene.

For most of the initial half , 8 Thottakkal is more of a thriller and it operates on an investigative mode. These portions are lively and have a certain novelty in narration. It is the slightly limited acting prowess of the leads that is the only handicap in these portions. Slowly and without you actually realizing it, the film which was till now operating from the POV of sub inspector Sathya (Vettri) makes an interesting and bold move and the narrative is now through the eyes of Moorthy ( M.S. Bhaskar). M.S. Bhaskar comes up with a performance that leaves you in awe. You know his potential and have seen him score earlier. But he was just a part in those films. Here he runs the show and it is one hell of a show. It is a character and a performance that asks you a lot of difficult questions on morality. When you are consistently put down for being a honest person in an unjust society and when the suffering becomes unbearable how do you cope up? What if you wake up one day and decide to show that you can be evil as well?

If there is one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb it is the picturisation of the songs and their placement. Even the term commercial compulsion does not make sense if it is going to be unintentionally comical as it is here.

Bottomline:

Quite a deep film that has so much going for it. If Sri Ganesh concentrates solely on his strengths, he could well be one of the torchbearers of Tamil cinema in the near future.

8 Thottakkal Tamil Movie

As I was watching this movie, I could sense where the thematic inspiration came from. I bow before the director of this movie, Sri Ganesh, solely for crediting the creators (during the end credits) whose works that have got him inspired.

He has given credits to Akira Kurosawa, Mysskin and Vince Gilligan among other legendary names. Vince Gilligan as some of you might be knowing is the writer of "Breaking Bad", a path-breaking Hollywood television series that had a successful run from 2008 to 2013 and remains as one of the top-rated series till now.

I was also able to see Breaking Bad posters splattered on the walls in a particular scene, which also served as the "tipping point" for the movie. Apart from the other subtle references, the story and screenplay deftly pay tribute to the famous television series. I am certainly not complaining about it as the writing was adapted for our ethos and the characters were deep rooted with different shades.

The story is about Sathya (Vetri) who grows up in a juvenile prison after being forcefully framed for a murder. The prison warden gets to know of Sathya's plight and takes pity on him. He makes sure that Sathya joins the police force when he grows up, even though Sathya hates the job. According to his wish, Sathya becomes a cop. He neither actively partakes in any case nor takes any bribe. When he finally gets to handle a case, he loses his pistol with 8 bullets loaded into it. His pursuit to recovering the pistol and the consequences of the pistol ending up in wrong hands forms the rest of the movie.

The plot was unique and juicy enough for a cop thriller. I loved the characterisation of MS Bhaskar and Nassar as their characters were etched out with several intricate layers and were prodded every now and then to showcase them.

The lead pair who were making their debut - Vetri and Aparna Balamurali, were not troubled much to deliver the goods, especially, Vetri had some wooden expressions and appeared to be a beaten down version of Vijay Antony in terms of performance. Thankfully his character was offbeat and so it augured well.

The plot was well connected and the "Breaking Bad" theme was well adapted to suit our ethos. A calm and timid man turning violent and bracing immorality are certainly not new, but the way in which it was showcased along with twists was a tidy piece of writing - a great example for adapted screenplay writing and a lesson for the story lifters who blatantly copy every scene while "getting inspired".

The movie could have been done without unnecessary songs, better lead actors and some more pace without prolonging more on the emotional rhetorics, but still the movie held its breath till the last and delivered solid thrills.

Debutante Sri Ganesh who turns out to be a former assistant of Mysskin has certainly picked up screenwriting skills from his mentor. He has to, however, smoothen the rough edges, but otherwise, he has given a palatable thriller in the form of '8 thottakkal'!

8 Thottakkal Movie Review

8 Thottakkal is the latest entrant to join the pleasantly fast growing list of newcomers' films making a huge bang at the box office. This film is directed by Sri Ganesh and produced by Big Print Pictures & Vetrivel Saravanan Cinemas. The cast includes Vetri, Aparna Balamurali, MS Bhaskar, Nasser and others. The horror season has slowed down and now Kollywood has turned its attention towards a couple of promising cop stories, in recent times. 8 Thottakkal seamlessly joins the line-up of movies like Dhuruvangal 16 and Kuttram 23. The movie follows the relentless search of a naïve and soft-spoken cop, who tries to find a culprit and relieve himself from the situation he has gotten into. Thumbs Up: • The screenplay is catchy with unexpected plot points which keep the movie gripping till the end. • A promising performance by actors like Vetri and other newcomers. • MS Bhaskar steals the show with his versatility • Music by Sundaramurthy RS is another plus for the movie Thumbs Down:  • Despite being good, the placement of the songs slow down the screenplay and the racy narration a little. • The film's run time could be trimmed a little to maintain the tight screenplay. Verdict: An edge-of-the-seat racy detective story that's unpredictable and keeps throwing surprises at every turn!

8 Thottakkal is yet another film directed by a young film maker. The movie, which is helmed by Sriganesh (who was assisting Mysskin earlier) has hit the screens today. Now let’s see how the movie has turned out to be.

The hero of the flick Vetri goes to jail in his childhood itself for a mistake that he has not committed. He has been admitted in a school for juvenile delinquents. A guard in the school understands him and comes forward to help him. He persuades him to become a police officer. Though Vetri is not interested in the profession be becomes a cop due to the forcing of the guard. He also does his work sincerely. The other people in the station don’t like his sincerity. Hence they plan to get rid of him from the station. In the meantime, Vetri loses his gun to a pickpocket. What happens next? Watch the movie to know.

Star Performances

Debutante Vetri is mostly seen with a sad face in the film. He excels in his role of a cop. Aparna who appears as a television reporter has done a commendable job and has a homely appearance. M S Bhaskar also steals the show through his meaty role. Nasser, who is a seen in many films nowadays, has done a convincing performance as always. The rest of the cast also ably support.

8 thottakkal movie review

What’s there?

• The screenplay is par excellence.

• Dinesh K Babu’s cinematography is good.

• The music of Sundaramoorthy is commendable.

What’s not there?

Editing of the film could have been given more concentration. There are some unnecessary scenes which hinders the progress of the movie.

This can be considered as a good debut attempt by director Sriganesh.
