Veeran movie review: Tamil superhero comedy with good intentions and unique rural backdrop

Veeran movie review: adhi shines in the tamil superhero film written and directed by ark saravan. it is fun, but also interesting thanks to its rural setup..

ARK Saravan , who made a strong impact with his debut film Maragatha Nanayam, a fantasy comedy, a few years ago, returns with a superhero comedy, which is also a concoction of a few other genres. What really makes Veeran standout from other Tamil superhero films from the past is its attempt to set the story in a small village, making it a first-of-its-kind attempt. Also read: Good Night review

Adhi is back to entertain his fans with the superhero film Veeran.

The premise of Veeran

Adhi plays Kumaran, an atheist, who gets struck by lighting at a very young age. As he takes time to recover from the incident, he starts to develop some powers at the same time. One of his powers is his ability to produce electrical discharge, also known as electric arc. Soon after the incident, Kumaran shifts to Singapore with his sister and returns 14 years later after a premonition warns him about an imminent threat to his village.

Upon his return, Kumaran unravels the mystery in his village. A multinational corporation - lead by mad scientist cum businessman Vinai Rai - is planning a big power project which will require the villagers to sign off their lands. Kumaran senses the sinister plan of Vinai, and makes it his life’s mission to stop the project from taking off.

Veeran is fun

Veeran isn’t a straightforward superhero film as it smartly strikes a balance between being a comedy based in rural India, and an emotional drama about one's faith in spirituality. It’s a very interesting idea that pits science and spirituality. It is explored quite convincingly, and full marks to director Saravan for treating it smartly.

Unlike most superhero films that chase grandeur, Veeran dumbs down every popular trope associated with the genre and that really works in the film’s favour quite well. When it isn’t a superhero film, Veeran is fun and consistently entertaining. The film, unlike is its first half, definitely needs trimming in the second half which does dip in quite a few places.

Action sequences are the highlight

Adhi, who has so far done films that have majorly appealed to young audiences, shines in a film that caters to all sections of the audience. As a youngster struggling to manage his newly acquired superhero powers, he turns in a very believable performance. The visual effects play a key role in the action sequences and the film manages to impress on that front as well. One of the highlights of the film has to be the highly inventive action sequences. Vinay as the main antagonist is the film’s weak link as he plays a character with no major purpose.

As a superhero film, Veeran achieves something that’s rarely been explored before. You don’t have to make a larger-than-life film, especially in this genre, to make audiences root for the hero. Here, Adhi’s superhero powers are never made to glorify his character. Another interesting aspect of the film has to be its rural backdrop - the whole village setup - which Saravan uses very effectively to keep the narration largely engaging. Comedy is Sarvan’s strength and he really makes a mark in that area jn Veeran.

Film: Veeran

Director: ARK Saravan

Cast: Adhi, Vinay Rai, Muniskanth and Kaali Venkat

Veeran Movie Review: `

Veeran Movie Review: A superhero film in which the attraction is everybody else

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

In perhaps the funniest scene of Veeran, a bad suit-clad boss (the impressive R Badree) storms into Veeranur to destroy a village deity site, but the superhero protagonist exercises ‘mind-control’ (Harry Potter fans might recognise this as the Imperius curse) and has him dancing to his tunes, literally. It’s a scene that gets funnier with repetition—like another scene featuring a government official played by Chinni Jayanth. It’s these little nuggets I liked in Veeran , moments where director ARK Saravan doesn’t seem too daunted by the pressure of making a superhero film and allows the superhero to work with the sweet-natured people of Veeranur to achieve ‘small’ objectives.

Director: ARK Saravan Cast: Hip Hop Tamizha Adhi, Munishkanth, Kaali Venkat, R Badri, Sassi Selvaraj If it’s true that ‘any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic’, then, surely, a superhero in a village must be indistinguishable from… god. This is a foundational parallel drawn throughout the story, with a good priest constantly getting his faith rewarded (remember how a line in The Dark Knight goes, “Sometimes, people deserve to get their faith rewarded’?). There’s even the suggestion that the village deity itself is a mythologised figure of a real warrior. Veeran, in these portions, treads a slender line to ensure that it never comes through as a ‘ saami padam ’; neither does it ever condescend on the power of faith. In fact, there’s a beautiful scene about how faith can move mountains—or in the case of this film, a paralysed girl. One good man, Kumaran/Veeran (Hip Hop Aadhi), goes to great lengths to underplay the effects of god… while many other good people in the village, including the priest, are happy to repose their faith in the supernatural. This film loves both.

Adhi as Kumaran isn’t exactly radiating charisma (even if his music is likeable and fascinatingly urban for the rural scape). However, I enjoyed that his character constantly underplays the importance of a superhero. It’s a departure from the vanity we are used to associating with superheroes. Even a Batman who seems so burdened by superhero duties finds the time to pose atop skyscrapers, his cape flying elegantly in moonlight. In this film, however, at a time of great need, Veeran’s powers (mind-control and electric arcs) fail him, as he totters, bruised and bloody. It’s a nice touch to emphasise that this man’s superhero attribute isn’t the powers he procured accidentally, but his unquenchable thirst for resistance. In fact, he says as much when he tells the people of Veeranur that they don’t need a superhero if they remember to stand united in resistance.

None of these appreciative observations is to excuse the many problems within the film, including how long it takes to get going, the lack of purpose for the hero’s friend and girlfriend, the weak main villain (Vinay), the generic corporation-exploits-village idea, the not-so-memorable stunts… I could go on, but it’s a film that also has enough moments of enjoyment—or should I say, amusement. Much like the filmmaker’s first film, Maragadha Nanayam , in which the humour shone (over the horror), here too, he seems most comfortable when operating in light spaces. And is there any other actor who’s better suited to playing the village simpleton than Munishkanth right now? There are many other such likeable characters—including a horse owner, the hero’s friend who gets plenty of screen-time and perhaps more dialogues than the hero, the heroine’s fiance, the young leader of a youth welfare association… ARK Saravan’s film seems to have a lot of love for the many people of Veeranur, and I enjoyed the democracy of his storytelling. Nothing summarises his love for the little people more than the scene in which the big villain gets taken down—or in his eagerness to give that fiance character a happy end.

And yet, it's a strange film—a film that’s mediocre with the grand but good with the minutiae. The origins story is so-so. The man-hero-superhero arc is half-hearted. The main villain is a farce. The hero’s power seems problematically intrusive. The heroine is purposeless. But contrast all of this with the film’s love for the ‘little’—especially, the many little people in Veeranur. Even the memorable villain isn’t the main character played by Vinay, but his little brother (R Badree). Even the temple site the hero is protecting isn’t a grand structure of architectural beauty. It’s merely a hint of a deity, a little symbol of a vaster feeling. For such nifty little touches, I feel compelled to be a little forgiving.

Veeran Movie Review: A Low-Voltage Rural Superhero Powered By High-Voltage Comedy

Veeran Movie Review

Director: ARK Saravan

Cast: Hiphop Tamizha Adhi , Athira Raj, Vinay Rai

You might not like several aspects of  Veeran  but it’s not too difficult to understand that this movie has been imagined by a person with a very original idea of humour. But it’s not so much the process of writing these elaborate gags that's giving you this feeling. Instead, it’s the conviction with which he’s able to deliver big laughs and that too with a set of performances that would stick out in any other film. One such in  Veeran  is how it uses the hero’s superpowers as the base for long stretches of comedy. The hero here has the power to control people’s minds but only for a short duration of time. Now this idea may have been used extensively to the point where even the central conflict ends in minutes. Yet Saravanan chooses to prop up this power almost entirely for laughs. In one situation, Veeran (Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi) gets a senior government official to halt the process that could damage his village by controlling his mind. Ensuring this officer refrains from signing a document is one thing but the writing is oftentimes so wild that this superhero convinces this officer to start cooking instead and not just anything, but onion sambhar.

Young Veeran discovering his lightning powers

The scene plays out exactly as randomly as the sentence above and that in parts is what makes  Veeran  reasonably enjoyable even if we’re only waiting for the next gag to play out. Like   Minnal Murali , this film too is very much a homegrown superhero with the film set in a village called Veeranooru somewhere in the middle of picturesque Pollachi. If the originality of the funny scenes keeps us hooked for the most part, the lack of originality in the basic idea chases us away. Agreed that this is Tamil cinema’s first real superhero movie but you can’t really remove the template of a rural hero standing up for his people, that too to tackle the evil intentions of an evil corporation.

The conflict is what we’ve seen in a million mass movies before but then again, it is the randomness that comes to the film’s rescue. The evil corporation here does not want to steal the people’s water or introduce a certain kind of pesticide to destroy their crops. Instead, this power company is in the process of laying a multi-crore laser cable through 26 such villages with the hope that it generates power. It’s a 2000 crore project and Veeranooru is the last village this cable has to go through for the project to get completed.

Now don’t ask me why the central power unit of such an expensive project requires to be protected using a Rs.200 Godrej lock that anyone can break open but you’ve already accepted the silliness as the film’s flavour by this point. The silliness works in its favour even when we meet the extremely over-the-top supervillain, whose main hobby is to develop a green-coloured poison that leads to the implosion of his victims.

Hiphop Tamizha Adhi in Veeran

This comic-book quality keeps the film likeable because who can take offence at a film that seems to be targeted at children (Veeran later saves a little girl from imminent danger). It is when it tries to get serious with a Science Versus Saamy debate that things go out of control. It is with the way that it wants to “address” the issue of indigenous Gods of rural Tamil Nadu that you feel the film diluting itself from its strengths. In parts, you feel like the film is reinforcing notions of religion and how it can be used to manipulate gullible villagers into almost anything. When Veeran thinks of using the legend of one such God and his own superpowers, the plan initially is to get his villagers to oppose the corporation in the name of God.

But this wouldn’t be such a progressive take, would it? So you find the film retrofitting disclaimers to make sure it does not promote any false mythmaking to fool its people, even if it is a worthy cause. These modifications to the central idea feel like a cop-out, especially when it uses an obviously Marxist character as someone who has to accept the powers of blind faith, even if it is for his daughter’s well-being.

What makes these detours a little annoying is how it’s forcing you to take the movie seriously even when we’ve happily accepted its out-of-the-world gimmickry as a strong suit. The redeeming factor, even when the film loses direction, is the comedy, that too anchored by a set of actors we want to keep seeing more of.

Hiphop Adhi

Which is to say that the superhero aspect of the film doesn’t quite work either, especially after a point. If mind control works for the laughs, his ability to shoot out lighting strikes should have worked for the action bits. But this too is used predictably to do things most movie heroes can pull off anyway. Except for an interesting interpretation of the Baasha electric pole scene, the use of a superhero is, for the most part, as generic as you would see in most Marvel movies.

And without the mega wattage of a superstar, you find Hip Hop Aadhi struggling to sell the slow-mo reveals where we see him for the first time in his superhero costume.  Veeran  works for the most part as a decent superhero movie that’s meant to speak to children. But we will have to wait for another day to see if a superhero can find a home in an issue-based rural mass movie where the dhavani is still more powerful than a cape.

Director ARK Saravan comes up with a simple but smart plot in his fantasy film  Veeran , which by the way, is being claimed as Tamil cinema’s first superhero film.

The film’s story might be simple, but it actually looks to make some meaningful points. Just for attempting to do so, the film and the director deserve a pat on the back.

Before we get into a detailed analysis of the film and its pros and cons, here’s the story in a nutshell.

Kumaran (Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi) of Veeranur gets struck by a thunderbolt while returning from school one day. He is taken to Chennai for treatment and later shifted to Singapore for further medical care.

Years pass and he returns as a young man to Veeranur, only to find that a corporate company is in the process of laying cables through his village and the neighbouring regions for generating power through lasers.

The company is headed by a ruthless scientist/businessman named Sharath (Vinay Rai) who is well aware of the fact that the project is extremely hazardous.

But he keeps the villagers in the dark about the risks associated with the power project for his selfish gains.

Kumaran acquires the ability to control the minds of those around him for brief periods. He also can discharge electric arcs because of the thunder/lightning strike he suffered as a boy.

So, Kumaran decides to use his powers to stop the corporate from implementing the dangerous project.

He disguises himself as the long-forgotten guardian deity of the village — Veeran — and looks to create awareness among the people about the hazards of the project.

Does Kumaran succeed in stopping the corporate from implementing the hazardous project? How does the corporate headed by Sharath look to get Veeran out of the way? The film gives answers to all these questions and more.

What works.

Veeran  looks to narrate a simple story that can be easily understood with minimal effort.

Despite dealing with a fantasy subject, the film has been made in such a fashion that one is easily able to accept what is shown on screen.

Nothing about the superhero’s skills or powers comes across as being awkward or out of place on the screen. That by itself is a big achievement as it helps the character gain acceptance.

Apart from narrating an entertaining story, the film subtly tries to make some pertinent points. For instance, it tries to put across the message that hard work and discipline are sure to deliver results, even if one’s prayers don’t work at times.

The friendship between Kumaran, Selvi (Athira Raj) and Sakkarai (Sassi) is heartening. There is a genuine warmth between the three friends, which makes the story more relatable.

What doesn’t work.

These are quite a few in number. The film has several gaping holes concerning logic.

In a sequence, Sharath finds a way to stop Kumaran/Veeran from generating the power arcs. However, he doesn’t employ the strategy when he needs to employ it the most and lets Kumaran get the better of him.

Further, Veeran has two talented comedians — Kaali Venkat and Munishkanth — to provide humour. Unfortunately, their acts don’t evoke laughter. At the most, they manage to get you to smile on some occasions.

However, what Kaali Venkat and Munishkanth fail to do, certain situations in the film succeed in doing. Yes, some situational comedy sequences involving small-time actors work big time in the film.

A case in point would be the sequence where a granny at a wedding function makes a big impact with her seemingly simplistic questions.

Further, Veeran has a simple but significant plot that needed to be told in a sharp, crisp manner. The editor seems to have failed on this count.

What should have ideally been a 135-minute film finally ends up being a 155-minute film because of some really long sequences and this could have well been trimmed.

Technical aspects.

The film’s music is a plus and its hero Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi, who has also scored the music for the film, does a much better job as a music director than he does as an actor.

The movie has some stunning fight sequences and the stunt choreographers seem to have done a mighty fine job.

Despite its flaws, Veeran comes across as a reasonably good film that is worth a watch.

Veeran Movie Review: A Desi Superhero with a Rural Twist June 2, 2023

Who is veeran what is the story , (no spoilers).

Veeran is about a man named Kumaran, played by Hiphop Adhi, who gains superpowers due to a childhood incident. He has the ability to control minds for a short period and can discharge electric arcs. The movie is set in a village where a corporate body, led by a character named Sharath, plans to implement a dangerous project.

Veeran Movie Scene

Kumaran decides to use his powers to protect his village and its people. He disguises himself as the long-forgotten guardian deity of the village, Veeran. The film’s narrative revolves around Kumaran’s journey in stopping the corporate project and how Sharath (Vinay Rai) plans to remove Veeran from their path.

The movie directed by ARK Saravan, explores themes of Myth, Massy-Superpower and village absurd comedy. Despite being a superhero movie, it tried to keep its touch with reality and village life, and these aspects make it interesting. The humor, action, and music add to the charm of the film.

It’s Not Minnal Murali, It’s a Mix-Bag

Veeran” does share some similarities with other films like Vijay’s Velayudham , Nikhil’s Karthikeya , Ram Kumar’s Mundasupatti, and Basil Joseph’s Minnal Murali. However, in the end it maintains its own identity, thanks to Da Vinci Code (Maybe an inspiration 🙂 ).

Veeran reminds us of “Velayudham” because of the dialogues, costumes, and the climax, where the protagonist assumes a guardian deity’s identity to protect his people.

The character sketch of Veeran bears a resemblance to “Karthikeya”.

The narration around the temple in “Veeran” is quite similar to “Mundasupatti”, and there is even a dialogue referencing it.

Temple Scene from Veeran Movie

Minnal Murali seems to have inspired Veeran in its plot and acts. Even the character of Kaali Venkat in Veeran appears to be similar to Aju Varghese’s role in Minnal Murali. Both characters provide comic relief and being a detective behind the main super-heroes.

The major difference between Veeran and Minnal Murali is in the writing. Minnal Murali has a steady, well-paced character development and transformation into a superhero, whereas Veeran tends to be more sudden in these aspects because of its poor writing.

What Could Have Been Better: Writing

Firstly , the pacing in the first half of the movie could have been better. The story’s development and character introductions felt sudden and could have been more gradual to allow the audience to connect better with the characters and their transformations.

Secondly, the narrative suffers from various logical loopholes. This indicates that the script could have used a little more time and thought. A more tightly woven plot would have significantly enhanced the movie’s overall impact.

Thirdly, the utilization of the superhero aspect of Veeran could have been done more creatively. The film does not fully explore the potential of Adhi’s superpowers, especially in the confrontations.

R BADREE in Veeran

Finally, the villain characters, played by Vinay Rai & R Badree, could have been more compelling. A stronger antagonist would have added more tension to the plot, making the story more engaging for the viewers. That’s what worked best for Minnal Murali.

Why You Should Try Veeran

Unique setting.

Veeran is set in a rural backdrop, offering a fresh and inter

esting take on the usual urban-centric superhero movies. The depiction of village life and its nuances add to the film’s charm.

This week, there are two super-heroes Spiderman and Veeran, I believe children should try this different superhero. Let them get a different perspective.

Superhero Theme

For fans of superhero movies, Veeran presents a novel, desi superhero, which isn’t very common in Indian cinema , especially Tamil cinema. The unique powers of mind control and discharging electric arcs set our hero apart. Thanks to Minnal Murali for this initiative.

Hiphop Adhi as VEERAN

Performance of Hiphop Adhi, R Badree & others.

Hiphop Adhi, as the lead character, delivers a solid performance . His portrayal of the superhero character, with all its complexities, is commendable and a major reason to watch the movie. R Badree nailed his role as a villain.

Good use of Comedy & Myth

The film manages to weave in subtle-humor throughout the plot, making it entertaining. Especially, the situational comedy sequences involving R Badree is a special treat. There is a surprise comedy for you from Munshikanth and Kaali Venkat in the climax.

Kaali Venkat, Munishkanth in Veeran

The way Veeran(Kumaran) uses Myth, is intriguing, it clearily shows how religious systems works, this is where I felt like Veeran is a mediocre Mundassupatti. But still it’s worth considering there are no creepy romantic track.

A scene from Veeran Movie

My Suggestion

Veeran doesn’t quite reach the heights of films like “Minnal Murali”, it still manages to entertain and engage the audience to a certain extent.People were laughing and clapping at theatre, especially children enjoyed the most, I guess.

Remember the first half is slow-paced & poorly written, but in the second half Veeran team did a better job. You may find some thrilling moments.

If you’re a fan of superhero movies and are interested in seeing a different take on the genre, Veeran could be worth a watch. But go in without high expectations , and you might find yourself enjoying the film.

Actor Hiphop Aadhi Tamizha’s previous collaboration with Sathya Jyothi Films have been decent family entertainers, and he attempts the same with this new movie ‘Veeran’, hitting screens worldwide today. The film is directed by ARK Saravan, who earlier shot to fame for his directorial debut ‘Maragadha Nanayam’.

Fantasy and Superhero movies have common element of an ordinary man getting super powers when either electrocuted or struck by the lightning. The protagonist (Hiphop Aadhi) belongs to the latter category, who unexpectedly gets hit and develops a superpower. He also experiences additional gifts of telepathy, which prompts him to fly back from Singapore to his native village to save the people from a serious issue.

As abovementioned, Hiphop Aadhi Tamizha is known for coming up with decent family entertainers, and this one is no exception. Director ARK Saravan, who knows the knack of blending humour and emotions together, delivers a neat film. Usually, fantasy genres would demand whopping budget, but the production value is well maintained here. The director rather than focusing on the grandeur tries to engross audiences with engrossing screenplay.

Apart from Aadhi, the other characters too get a decent scope to perform. But it would have been nice if the villain’s character was made yet more powerful. The musical score and the cinematography are additional attractions in this movie.

There are few scenes that manage to eclipse the little vague moments in the writing. Say for instance, the police station sequence followed by the encounter of Veeran with the little girl and few more scenes easily lets the audience feel the connection.

Veeran is a passable entertainer that will not disappoint the family audiences. Sathya Jyothi Films needs special mention for coming up with such decent entertainers, and Veeran will not disappoint the universal crowds.

Verdict: A decent entertainer that blends humour and emotions engrossing audiences

'Veeran' explores the intersection of superstition and faith: Director Ark Saravan

 alt=

Mumbai: Ark Saravan, the writer and director of the Tamil fantasy-action streaming film 'Veeran', has expressed that the movie explores the delicate balance between superstition and faith. 'Veeran' features prominent actors such as Hiphop Tamizha Adhi, Chella, Munishkanth, Vinay Rai, Athira Raj, Kaali Venkat, and Sassi Selvaraj in significant roles.

It follows the story of Kumara, a young boy from Veeranur village, who on a fateful day, is struck by lightning that puts him in a coma. Seeking better treatment for Kumara, his father decides to send him abroad.

But years later, upon his return, Kumara realises that he has gained superpowers which he must now hone to protect his village from an evil corporation and their menacing technology that could endanger innocent lives. The basic premise of the story looks similar to that of the Tovino Thomas-starrer 'Minnal Murali'

The film is headed for a digital premiere on 30 June.

Actor-musician Hiphop Tamizha Adhi said: "As kids, we all dreamed of becoming superheroes, and as an actor, I have longed to play the role of one. ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ movie review: Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan shine in a visually stunning drama

A brilliant amitabh bachchan and prabhas power director nag ashwin’s ambitious mythology-inspired science fiction film that soars, but falls just short of being a game-changer.

We don’t need to look beyond Indian epics for riveting, complex stories of good versus evil, superheroes and demons, darkness and dawn. In Kalki 2898 AD , director Nag Ashwin attempts an unusual meeting point of the past and the future by blending stories from the Mahabharata with a futuristic, dystopian science fiction world. He underlines that heroes are not born, but rise. The masterstroke lies in casting the indefatigable Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwatthama, the oldest human alive from the Kurukshetra war, and making him the backbone of the narrative. He is pitted against Bhairava (Prabhas), to set the stage for the arrival of Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu. The film takes giant leaps of faith and has awe-inducing segments. Is Kalki 2898 AD a game-changer? In terms of ambition, yes. In terms of writing and storytelling, there are niggles.

The narrative goes back and forth from the Kurukshetra war to Kasi and Shambala, 6000 years after the war. Kasi is depicted as the last surviving city but everything is in shambles. The mighty Ganges has dried up and food is scarce. Everything required to support life — water, food and air — is within a Complex, a towering inverted pyramid structure that is out of bounds for common folks, and governed by Supreme Yaskin or Kali (Kamal Haasan). Shambala is a hidden refuge for people from different faiths and cultures who are willing to risk their lives for a better tomorrow.

Kalki 2898 AD (Telugu, dubbed in other languages)

A lot has gone into building these worlds — the Kurukshetra battlefield, Kasi, Shambala and the Complex. Kalki attempts to immerse the audience in the battles and unlikely partnerships between these worlds on a massive scale. It isn’t only narrating a good-over-evil story featuring superheroes and demons. It also tries to pay homage to Telugu classics, contemporary mainstream ‘mass’ cinema, and the penchant for comedies. Some of this works, while others seem misfit. For instance, two popular directors appear in cameos; these portions might have been better suited for Instagram reels and memes, but seem out of place in this story.

In the runtime of 181 minutes, the first half goes into setting up the tale and establishing Bhairava as a laidback bounty hunter who is yet to find his true calling. He wants to earn one million units (a measure of currency) and enter the Complex to lead a good life. But his moral compass remains ambiguous. Bhairava’s introduction and his taking on a dozen men, at the surface, seems like a staple of any Telugu film with an A-list star. The payoff for this happens later when he locks horns with Ashwatthama in a prolonged but delightful sequence. That is when one truly appreciates the Bujji and Bhairava connection.

Bujji (Bu-jz-1, with a voiceover by Keerthy Suresh) is Bhairava’s AI (artificial intelligence)-powered custom-made vehicle. Bhairava and Bujji share an uncanny partnership but we get only a passing statement about the origin story of Bujji. The animation prequel series Bujji and Bhairava (streaming on Amazon Prime Video) is packed with more fun. The same goes for the bond between Bhairava and his landlord (Brahmanandam). The dialogues (by Nag Ashwin and Sai Madhav Burra) do not always hit the mark.

The romance track between Bhairava and Roxie (Disha Patani) is a deterrent and I waited for the story to move on. Roxie is brought in for a reason — to introduce Bhairava and the audience to the Complex, but there could have been better ways to do this. Some other cameos in the initial portions also miss the mark, save the one played by Mrunal Thakur. The actor shown as Bhairava’s father and two other cameos that get a blink-and-miss appearance in the song featuring Bhairava and Roxie serve more as nods to those who featured in Vyjayanthi Films’ earlier ventures rather than add depth to the world of Kalki .  Oh, there are other cameos as well in the Mahabharata portions that serve as a surprise.

Also Read | ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ trailer breakdown: From ‘Dune’ to ‘Blade Runner’, here are the sci-fi inspirations

The standout moments in the first half include the introduction of evil as the supreme Yaskin, with Kamal Haasan relishing the ominous turn, SUM-80 or Sumati (Deepika Padukone) as a lab rat yearning for a better life and motherhood, and Ashwatthama realising that the time has come for his final battle.

Kalki 2898 AD finds its groove in the later portions, providing the much-needed emotional gravitas through Sumati. Mariam (Shobhana), Veeran (Pasupathy) and Kyra (Anna Ben) are among the several other characters. There are the masked raiders (costume design by Archana Rao) of the Complex, hundreds of them in dark attire, locking horns with the Shambala army in hues of white. When we get a closer look at the inhabitants of Shambala, cutting across cultures and faiths, and why they look for hope, it makes an impact. Between the action episodes involving futuristic machines, some moments underline how life as we know it has changed beyond recognition. Sumati trying to comprehend the idea of marriage and life thereafter, for instance.

However, the writing is not free of predictable arcs. When a character reiterates that her name stands for good luck, we know what comes next.

For all the gradual building of the world and the characters in the first hour, the payoffs come in the form of battles involving Ashwatthama (referred to at one point as ‘angry giant man’), Bhairava, Bujji who transforms into a giant machine and commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee) with futuristic guns, laser-powered detonators, flying machines and more. As a visual spectacle, it is magnificent on the large screen and Kalki sets a new benchmark.

Also read: Interesting facts about Prabhas-Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Kalki 2898 AD’

‘It is always darkest just before the day’, goes a statement by 17th century scholar Thomas Fuller. The essence of his words echoes across cultures and faiths. When the world is torn apart with strife and people are distraught to a point of breaking down, hope and light cannot be far away. Cinematographer Djordje Stojiljkovic and the production team led by Nitin Zihani Choudhary paint a brooding dark world, bathed in muddy browns and ominous blacks, and hope comes in the form of sunlight that struggles to stream in, a hint of glow and warmth from the fire, and so on.

Making his character appear every bit larger than life is Amitabh Bachchan as the mighty Ashwatthama, supposedly standing tall at nearly eight feet. He towers over everyone else and his demeanour shows who is the boss. He looks utterly believable when he tosses men and machines into the air. Kalki also plays to the strengths of the stardom of Prabhas, with the actor gamely trying to be a modern-day superhero with an attitude to boot. A reveal towards the final portions is a big, pleasant surprise and builds anticipation for the Kalki Cinematic Universe (yes, there will be part two). Despite this, the end also felt abrupt rather than a cliffhanger.

The music too is a bit hit-and-miss. Santhosh Narayanan pays rich homage to the Bhagavad Gita and old Telugu classics, and then stunningly transitions into a futuristic gaming zone realm. However, the songs take some getting used to.

Kalki’s narrative has several subtexts to decode, long after the film is over. The parallels drawn between Yaskin and Kamsa, the design of the Complex, the surroundings of Yaskin and the flying machine used by Manas. There is a lot to root for. If only it had sidestepped the lacklustre romance and the underwhelming dialogues to make for a more cohesive narrative. Despite these shortcomings, Kalki is a brave new attempt that deserves big cheers.

Kalki 2898 AD release date

Kalki 2898 AD: Release Date, Cast & More

By Devanshi Basu

One of the most talked-about movies of the year, Kalki 2898 AD, is gearing up to release this Friday. The film has been the talk of the town ever since its announcement for various reasons, including multiple delayed release dates, cast speculation, plot details, an expansive budget, and more. Before viewers see this magnum opus, here’s everything you need to know.

Kalki 2898 AD: What is the release date?

Director Nag Ashwin’s ambitious project, Kalki 2898 AD, is gearing up to hit theaters on June 27, 2024 . This highly anticipated film has generated significant buzz since its announcement.

Blending Indian mythology with a futuristic dystopian setting, the film promises a never-before-seen cinematic experience. The first teaser was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, making it the first Indian film to do so. “The whole film is made for international audiences,” said Prabhas, emphasizing the film’s grand scale and global appeal.

Kalki 2898 AD is speculated to be a sci-fi retelling of the story of Kalki and the end of the Kali Yuga of Hindu mythology. The story spans a remarkable 6,000 years, from the Mahabharata era to the year 2898 AD. Director Nag Ashwin explains , “The film starts with Mahabharat and ends in 2898 AD. It spans 6000 years in time. We tried to create worlds, imagining what they would be like while still keeping it Indian.”

The film merges Indian mythology with a dystopian vision, avoiding comparisons to Western sci-fi like Blade Runner. The latest trailer offers a glimpse into this intriguing world, featuring a Shiva Linga and the character Ashwatthama (played by Amitabh Bachchan) declaring, “The time has come.” This line hints at the arrival of Kalki, the 10th avatar of Lord Vishnu, destined to end the current age of darkness.

The trailer further reveals a world where advanced technology and ancient beliefs coexist. Bhairava, played by Prabhas, is shown navigating a complex environment where he must capture SUM-80, a character portrayed by Deepika Padukone.

The plot thickens with Ashwatthama’s involvement, who seems determined to protect SUM-80, indicating a deeper, more intricate storyline. However, the makers have kept Kalki 2898 AD’s plot shrouded in mystery.

Kalki 2898 AD Premise

In the year 2898 AD, the world is vastly transformed, with the desertified city of Kasi standing as the last known civilization. Governed by a totalitarian elite under the leadership of the god-king Supreme Yaskin, who rules from a hovering, inverted pyramidal megastructure known as the "Complex," Kasi is a city entrenched in control and dystopia. The film weaves its narrative through the rich tapestry of ancient Indian Hindu mythology and dystopian future society, chronicling an epic journey across millennia. Starting from the events of the Mahabharata in 3102 BC, marking the dawn of Kali Yuga, to the far-future year of 2898 AD, the story centres on the enigmatic arrival of Kalki, the tenth and final avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu.

Kalki 2898 AD Cast

The film features a diverse and talented ensemble cast, with Prabhas leading as Bhairava, a highly skilled bounty hunter. Amitabh Bachchan brings to life Ashwatthama, while Kamal Haasan takes on the role of Supreme Yaskin. Deepika Padukone stars as SUM-80, and Disha Patani plays Roxie. The supporting cast includes Rajendra Prasad, Saswata Chatterjee as Commander Manas, Brahmanandam as Rajan, Bhairava's landlord, and Pasupathy as Veeran, a rebel from Shambhala. Anna Ben portrays Kyra, Veeran's ally, and Shobhana plays Mariam. Completing the cast are Harshith Malgireddy and Keerthy Suresh, who take on the roles of BU-JZ-1, also known as Bujji, the AI droid companion, and the voice of Bhairava's vehicle.

Kalki 2898 AD Crew

Directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by C. Aswani Dutt for Vyjayanthi Movies, this highly anticipated film boasts a skilled crew, including cinematographer Djordje Stojiljkovic and editor Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao. Nag Ashwin meticulously crafted the screenplay with additional dialogue by Sai Madhav Burra, complemented by Santhosh Narayanan's emotive musical score, promising an unforgettable cinematic journey. Distributed by AA Films, this production guarantees to captivate audiences with its visionary storytelling and outstanding ensemble.

Initially announced in February 2020, the production of Kalki 2898 AD encountered a one-year setback owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming commenced in July 2021 at a state-of-the-art set located at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, and proceeded intermittently across multiple phases over the subsequent three years before concluding in March 2024. With a staggering production budget of ₹600 crore (US$72 million), Kalki 2898 AD stands as the costliest Indian film ever made.

Kalki 2898 AD was originally planned for release on May 9, 2024, but was rescheduled due to the 2024 Indian general election. It is now scheduled for a global theatrical release on June 27, 2024, in IMAX, 3D, and various other film formats.

Kalki Music

Santhosh Narayanan composed the film's music. The first single, "Bhairava Anthem," debuted on June 16, 2024, followed by the second single, "Theme of Kalki," released on June 25, 2024.

Kalki Visual Effects

The movie features visual effects created by Prime Focus DNEG and The Embassy Visual Effects, which worked in collaboration with StealthWorks Taiwan, Folks VFX, Lola Visual Effects, Pixstone Images, and Labyrinth.

According to film industry tracker AB George, "Kalki 2898 AD" by Nag Ashwin presents a commendable concept, applauded for its grand visuals and impressive CGI work, setting a high standard for Indian cinema. The film is praised for its superb storytelling across its narrative arcs, particularly in the second half, complemented by standout performances from Prabhas, Deepika, and Shobhana. Amitabh Bachchan's role is highlighted as particularly fiery and praiseworthy. However, criticisms include a somewhat weak background score and missed opportunities for impactful cameos. Overall, "Kalki 2898 AD" promises a good theatrical experience likely to resonate well in Telugu and Hindi markets, earning a solid 3 out of 5 rating.
