The most unforgettable moment in my life is when one day I was travelling from Jammu to Dehli by train. I was in the first class, so only a few passengers were there with me. At a specific station, all of them got off. I was now in the compartment absolutely alone.

After a moment, a clever lady walked into the compartment and sat next to me. She had an ingenious scheme to rob me. She told me she would report to the railway police that I had robbed her if I did not hand over all the money I had to her. I was totally and utterly perplexed when I heard this horrible voice. I made a plan to save myself from that lady’s wicked plan. Therefore, I pretended to be a deaf and a dumb fellow and asked her to write what she wanted to say on a piece of paper. She wrote her request happily on the piece of paper and handed it over to me. I changed my seat to pick up a piece of writing. The railway policeman came and asked what the matter was. As smart as she was, the women burst into admissions, so she said I had robbed her of a thousand rupees. He seemed to believe in her false story at first, but when I gave the piece of writing to the police, she turned pale. She was caught red-handed, so I saved myself from her evil scheme.

Model Answer 1

A pivotal moment that redefined my life occurred during the summer of 2018, in the serene surroundings of a mountain retreat. This life-altering event was not marked by grand fanfare; instead, it was a quiet realization during a meditation retreat. The change was profound yet subtle – it was the embracement of mindfulness and a newfound appreciation for the present moment.

Before this experience, my life was in constant fast-forward, with my mind perpetually racing from one worry to the next. It was during a session of guided meditation, enveloped by the tranquil mountain air and the gentle rustling of leaves, that I experienced a profound sense of peace. This tranquility was not merely the absence of noise; it was an awakening to the beauty of the present.

This transformation has had lasting effects on my life. Embracing mindfulness has allowed me to approach daily challenges with calmness and clarity. Stressful situations, which previously overwhelmed me, now seem manageable as I have learned to maintain a composed and focused mind. This change has enhanced my interpersonal relationships as well; I listen more attentively, respond more thoughtfully, and appreciate the nuances of communication. Moreover, this shift has positively influenced my career, where the ability to remain present and composed under pressure is invaluable.

In essence, the change was not just in my actions, but in my perspective. The realization that living in the moment is not just a phrase, but a transformative practice, has been the cornerstone of this positive shift. This journey towards mindfulness has not only enriched my personal experiences but has also imbued me with a sense of serenity and purpose, attributes that have significantly enhanced the quality of my life.

Model Answer 2

One transformative event that significantly reshaped my life's trajectory occurred in the autumn of 2016, amidst the bustling streets of New York City. This defining moment was not one of dramatic revelation, but rather a gradual awakening sparked by volunteering at a local community center.

The change was a deep-seated shift in perspective, from a self-centered worldview to one marked by empathy and a commitment to service. Prior to this experience, my life revolved around personal ambitions and material success. However, engaging with diverse individuals from various walks of life, all converging at this hub of community activity, opened my eyes to the broader spectrum of human experience.

The transformation was multi-faceted. On a personal level, I developed a profound sense of gratitude for the privileges I had taken for granted. This shift in mindset led to a more fulfilling life, where happiness was not solely derived from personal achievements but also from the joy of contributing to the well-being of others. Professionally, this experience broadened my horizons, inspiring me to pursue a career in social work, a field I had never previously considered.

Moreover, this volunteering stint honed my interpersonal skills, teaching me the value of active listening, empathy, and effective communication. These skills have not only made me a more compassionate individual but also a more adept professional, capable of building meaningful relationships and understanding diverse viewpoints.

In essence, this experience redefined my life's purpose. It instilled in me the belief that true fulfillment comes from serving others and contributing to a greater good. This newfound purpose has guided my decisions and actions, leading to a more enriching and rewarding life journey.

This sample answer is an excellent illustration of how to effectively respond to the topic, "Describe an event that changed your life (or, changed you) in a good way." It stands out as a high-scoring answer for several reasons:

2.    Depth of Personal Growth and Insight: The answer showcases a profound personal transformation from a focus on self to a dedication to service and empathy. This level of introspection and reflection on personal growth demonstrates a deep understanding of the subject matter, which is essential in conveying a compelling narrative.

3.    Rich and Descriptive Language: The use of descriptive and emotive language, such as "gradual awakening" and "deep-seated shift in perspective," enhances the quality of the response. This not only engages the listener but also shows mastery of language, a critical component of the IELTS Speaking test.

4.    Cohesive Structure and Flow: The response is well-structured, with a clear beginning, development, and conclusion. This coherence in storytelling ensures that the listener can easily follow and understand the narrative.

A pivotal moment that irrevocably transformed my life unfolded in the spring of 2019, against the backdrop of the historic city of Rome. This life-altering event was my first solo international travel experience, a journey that not only spanned continents but also expanded the horizons of my mind.

The change was profound and multifaceted. Embracing the unknown, navigating through the labyrinthine streets of a foreign land, and immersing myself in a culture vastly different from my own, instilled in me an unshakeable confidence and an insatiable curiosity. Prior to this expedition, my world view was limited, shaped largely by my immediate surroundings and second-hand narratives. However, this solo voyage introduced me to the rich tapestry of global cultures, languages, and perspectives.

The transformation was both personal and intellectual. Personally, the journey fostered a sense of independence and self-reliance that I had never experienced before. Each decision, from choosing the next destination to overcoming language barriers, was a step towards self-discovery and growth. Intellectually, it broadened my understanding of the world, teaching me the value of cultural diversity and the importance of global interconnectedness.

Moreover, this travel experience refined my problem-solving skills and adaptability, traits that have proven invaluable in both personal and professional realms. It taught me to approach challenges with a calm and open mind, turning obstacles into opportunities for learning and growth.

In summary, this solo journey was not just a physical traverse across countries; it was a voyage into the depths of my own potential. It reshaped my identity, turning me into a global citizen, eager to explore, learn, and connect with the diverse tapestry of humanity that makes our world so rich and fascinating.

The most Unforgettable Experience in my Life

How it works

In a remote village in Atlanta Georgia, on the Christmas Eve of 1997 Mr. and Mrs. Roby received their bundle of joy. A healthy bouncing baby boy was delivered in our lady hospital and they named him Johnson parker afterwards his friends nicknamed him ambassador.

This is the name I am known by unlike my biological names. I lived the name and I am currently the cancer ambassador for the Generation three against cancer group, I am also the teens favorite footballer currently playing for Nottingham Football club.

I am telling my story to motivate and challenge the young and even the old people who have not lived up to  their dreams and tell them to hold on to their dreams as it is never too late to dream. My dad was a mason while my mum was a casual laborer in the estates around our home my dad was in the military and he resigned after his leg was injured during an ambush in the war. He devoted his entire savings to educate us and providing for the family.

I was the third born in a family of five.  My elder brother was in high school and he was a very good musician He is still a musician currently in the famous Tiger band. He was the one left in charge of the family when our parents were off to work. One day he was left in charge and he decided to teach us how to swim in the local river he carried all of us in a cart and took us to the nearby river. Our youngest sibling was two years old then and she almost drowned. God knows how dad dealt with us he was a very strict disciplinarian who didnt allow us to be an undisciplined lot. Life was generally good until a tragedy came knocking, I was a very healthy young boy very active in school especially in the pitch and very talkative boy.

A pimple appeared on my hand and as usual I would scratch it and the itching would disappear, the pimple busted open forming a wound and I thought I would heal. It then turned into pain and agony after the pimple turned to a wound. I was taken to the hospital where it would be dressed every now and then but it never showed any signs of healing. On the fateful afternoon of 9 August 2005, my dad was involved in a site accident which took his life, my life and that off my siblings broke into shutters. The mysterious disease was quickly draining my health and the finances too, after the demise of my father life took a u turn from good to worst.

My mum wouldnt not afford the school fees and still afford my medication my siblings dropped out of school to at least pave way for my medication. The hell broke loose when I was diagnosed with cancer, I for a moment thought am going to die the next minute and give up my dream of becoming a star in footballer or a pediatrician. I really prayed to God for a second chance in my life so that I can make an impression on the world.

Luckily for me my cancer was diagnosed in its initial stages and with extensive medication and chemotherapy I was recovering very well, but this was not a guarantee I would heal until the doctors run their last tests and gave their much awaited observation that I was free from cancer. The local football team and well wishers were able to raise my medical bill and I was released from the hospital. I saw that as the second chance I was haggling for with God and there and then I decided that I will live my life for others too.  But when I was out of the hospital the problem was integrating with the community as they were making fun of me calling me names. For instance, they called me the shaolin the Chinese men who shave their head bald due to their religion. This baldness was a result of the cancer treatment.

We became withdrawn since we never went to school and we spent most of the time helping our mother in her odd jobs. The only choice left was selling our home so as to get some money to help us out, the kids at school were all making fun of us but the determination I had in my heart to make it in life was like a fire burning up in me. I wanted to make sure I live my passion and still help people out who think they are worthless. I formed the generation three cancer group in a bid to raise the awareness on cancer which received a major lift after it got an endorsement from the cancer society.

The group which consists of people affected by cancer or cancer survivors has its main goals as impacting positively to the patient by showing them that cancer is not a death sentence while training others on good lifestyles to avoid the disease.  I have also played a lot of charity matches to raise funds for settling medical bills for patients. Despite that I was sick and my life was almost coming to abrupt end, I was able to make a turnaround and better my life and that of my family.

Therefore, I would like to urge each and every one of you to take control of his or her life. To stop listening to the discouragers and .face them with courage and let them see you disappears on the horizon away from them as life is an uphill marathon do not anticipate a sprint. Similarly, service to man is service to God we should help other when they call upon us.

Last Sunday, I went shopping eagerly at the largest shopping mall in my town. My elder sister was accompanying me. As the important Christmas Day was just around the corner, the shopping mall was packed with people.

There were many girls and ladies who were hanging their handbags loosely over their shoulders. I also did likewise. Although my mother always advised me not to bring a handbag, or if I wanted to bring it, I must hang it carefully over my shoulder, I refused to do so. Her advice always fell on deaf ears.

ready to help you now

Without paying upfront

As the shopping mall was having a mega sale, I was engrossed entirely in looking at the goods of low prices especially the clothes with cute little blue ribbons which I wanted to buy for a long time. They were offered at the discount of up to 70%! This made me not wary of my loosely-hanging handbag. I was also not aware that it had attracted the attention of a potential snatch thief. He was creeping towards me but my eyes were stuck on the clothes and I did not see him.

Suddenly, there was a pull on my shoulder. It made me lose the balance of my body and my arms hit the hanger of the clothes.Consequently, I had a bad cut. Blood was streaming down from my arm.

After waking up from my shock, I had let out a loud scream. “Stop him! My handbag! Thief! Thief! ” I shouted in panic and then, I could not even utter a sentence properly. An alert man heard my cry of help and made a bee line to the escaping snatch thief. The thief promptly ran down the staircase.

The determined man, without thinking, aimed at the thief and jumped towards the thief from the staircase. Finally, he pinned the thief down successfully. “Aha! I got you! There is no way for you to run away! ” the man announced happily. He then took my handbag back from the thief to return to its rightful owner, me.

At the same time, the security guards came and lent us a helping hand. They handcuffed the snatch thief and took him away. The man, my hero, came towards me and returned the handbag to me. I thanked him gratefully as all my pocket money which I had saved for some time was in my handbag.

Upon seeing my bleeding arm, he borrowed the first aid box from the officer of the shopping mall and helped me to clean the wound gently. After that, he advised me to carry my handbag carefully next time. I nodded to show my agreement as I was still in shock so I could not speak a single word. At this moment, my not-so-sensitive sister just realized that I was there, the victim of an incident.

I felt very embarrassed and asked my sister to take me back without any hitches. With a sad expression, we left the shopping mall. Before I left, I could hear some ladies muttering, “The thieves pose a danger in our society. We have to be careful next time.

” The incident was not only a lesson to me but also for other girls and ladies. When I reached home, my mother scolded me very badly. Without any hard feeling, I just stood there for the scolding until my mother felt exhausted. Then, I apologized to her for not paying heed to her advice earlier.

I went back to my bedroom to have a good nap as I really had to relax then. Was I thinking of going to the mall a second time to purchase my dream party dress? I was not sure, but I was certain that I would take good care of my handbag in the future. It was indeed an unforgettable event in my life.

But unfortunately, I did not awake by the alarm that I had set. When I was wake up, it is already 2. 20 pm. There was only left 10 minutes for me to prepare all the things and rush to volley ball's field. I Just quickly wash my face and simply pick a shirt in my cupboard. Luckily, I still manage to be at volley ball's court on time.

Before starting the practice, the lecture gave us some brief about the technique of playing volley ball. He taught us how to pass, set and serve the ball. After the briefing, we start o

ur practice while our lecture was standing beside with a whistle observe us. Most of us blame about the hot weather but as the practice going on, slowly we started to enjoy the game. We decided to have a competition among our self and the lecture will be the referee to Judge our match. We had choosing 5 people for each team and I was chosen as one of them.

As my hand was closing the broken part of the pant, I could not walk normally, I walked like a duck toward the lecture to ask for the permission for going back the hostel to change a new pant. By Monday morning, the answer to one of the biggest questions looming over the Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York had emerged.

Would members of the union representing employees of Vogue and other Condé Nast publications proceed with threatened disruptions to the gala orchestrated by Vogue editor Anna Wintour ? No: A tentative contract agreement between Condé Nast and union leaders was reached hours before the event.

But other questions — What celebrities would show up? How would guests interpret the “Garden of Time” dress code? — were only answered as attendees started stepping out of Sprinter vans to make their way into the gala, known formally as the Costume Institute Benefit.

As stars like Emily Ratajkowski , Pamela Anderson and Dan Levy hit the carpet, some sartorial themes became clear. Among them: Floral prints and embellishments, elaborate headpieces and skin-revealing outfits that skewed more Garden of Eden.

At an event where fashion is the focus, it can be harder to stand out on a red carpet (or a greenish one, as was the case at this year’s Met Gala). But these 20 ensembles — for reasons good and not-so-good — will be hard to forget.

Zendaya: Most Cool Blue!

The actress, one of five hosts of this year’s gala, arrived on the carpet in a bluish-green Maison Margiela by John Galliano gown that recalled the palette of a peacock, a comparison even further evoked by what appeared to be a feather protruding from her headpiece.

Gigi Hadid: Most Topsy Turvy!

The model’s Thom Browne gown had a skirt that appeared to be made of deconstructed white suit jackets. Yellow floral embellishments nodded to the gala’s dress code.

Donald Glover: Most Melty!

Over his dark shirt and tie the actor wore a loose caramel-colored Saint Laurent suit that practically melted into the floor.

Doja Cat: Most This Old Thing?!

After leaving her hotel in a Vetements dress resembling a white bath towel , the rapper changed into a giant (wet) T-shirt dress by the same label to walk the carpet.

Cardi B: Most Deep Space!

The rapper’s expansive organza gown by Windowsen conjured the unknowable depths of the universe.

Bad Bunny: Most Accessorized!

A pillowlike headpiece, leather gloves and diamond-shaped sunglasses were among the accessories that the singer and rapper, another host of the gala, wore with his Maison Margiela suit.

Kim Kardashian: Most Breathtaking!

The reality TV star and entrepreneur wore a silver Maison Margiela by John Galliano dress with a corset so extremely cinched it drew gasps online .

Elle Fanning: Most Ice Princess!

Hovering above the shoulders of the actress’s Balmain gown were resin birds that appeared to be draping her in the dress’s sheer material.

Colman Domingo: Most Suave!

The actor told the E! host Ross Mathews that his breezy black-and-white formal wear by Willy Chavarria was partly a homage to the former Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley, a Met Gala fixture who died in 2022 .

Lana Del Rey: Most Mosquito Net!

Branchlike protrusions on the singer’s Alexander McQueen gown held up beige netting that functioned not only as a veil, but also as protection from any mosquitoes that might have crashed the carpet.

Donatella Versace: Most ‘Challengers’!

On the arms of Jude Law and Andrew Scott, the designer Donatella Versace was the picture of an enthralling woman caught between two men — a scenario that brought to mind the plot of the movie “Challengers.”

Steven Yeun: Most Prepared!

The actor accessorized his Thom Browne tuxedo with a gold-handled umbrella that made for a great prop while posing for photographers.

Tyla: Most Granular!

Three kinds of sand were used to make the South African singer’s Balmain gown, which she accessorized with an hourglass.

Cole Escola: Most Modest Bride!

The actor’s Thom Browne ensemble of white veiled hat, skirt suit and loafers seemed as appropriate for a chapel as the Met Gala carpet.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph: Most Canadian Ballgown!

Instead of all-denim separates, a look known to many as a Canadian tuxedo, the actress wore a denim gown designed by Zac Posen of Gap, which brought an unusually laid-back attitude to the high-fashion gala.

Rebecca Ferguson: Most Dressed!

The actress arrived on the carpet swathed in a voluminous black Thom Browne cape that she quickly peeled off. Its underside was lined in blue and featured an avian motif that matched the design of her sparkly high-collar gown, also by Thom Browne.

Demi Moore: Most Sharp Curves!

A sculptural Harris Reed gown with exaggerated hips gave the actress plenty of curve appeal. A pointy rim along the back of the dress added a touch of danger.

Taylor Russell: Most Buffed!

The actress’s Loewe gown featured a sculpted bodice that looked like a freshly waxed hardwood floor.

Sydney Sweeney: Most New ’Do!

The actress swapped her blonde, wavy hair for a black bob that matched her leather evening gloves and the flower stems on her pale blue Miu Miu gown.

Zendaya: Most Redo!

After walking the carpet in her Margiela ensemble, the actress walked it again in a dramatic black Givenchy gown and a vibrant floral headpiece by Alexander McQueen, both of which were archival pieces.

Anthony Rotunno and Callie Holtermann contributed reporting.

Our Coverage of the 2024 Met Gala

Zendaya Makes Two Arrivals: The actress wore a second John Galliano design to make a late (re)entrance at the Met Gala . The first was a custom Maison Margiela couture dress he created specifically for her.

A Fitting Literary Inspiration: In 1962, J.G. Ballard published “The Garden of Time,” a short story about aristocrats overrun by “an immense rabble.” It was a fitting but ironic choice as this year’s  dress-code theme .

The Body Spectacle: The night saw Kim Kardashian engaged in a kind of body modification  via extreme corseting. While Tyla, the South African singer and songwriter, appeared coated in sand .

Arrests and Protests: As expected, protesters gathered near the Met Gala to protest the war in Gaza, creating an atmosphere far different  from the one inside the event.

The ‘Naked’ Trend: What better way to distinguish oneself  from hundreds of well-dressed competitors than to wear almost nothing at all?

A Night of Firsts: Here’s the story behind Rebecca Ferguson’s sequin, bird-covered dress , Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s all-denim look , Pamela Anderson’s new incarnation , Christian Cowan and Sam Smith’s debut as a couple , and Amanda Seyfried’s semi-recycled look .

Inspired by The Moth Radio Hour and PBS-TV’s “Stories From the Stage,” the Schiffmans began hosting them in 2023 to help Flathead locals share memorable stories, as Glenn did at live events in Los Angeles and Spokane in past years.

The theme for the May 21 event is “All in the Family” — true and fictional stories and poems about biological or extended families, human-animal bonds and more.

Spring 2024 tellers include Rebecca Ashcraft, Katy Carey, Susan Hartman, Craig Naylor (poet), Dixon Rice, Glenn Schiffman, and Alan Solum. Most of them shared other original stories at 2023 events and are members of Authors of the Flathead.

Authors of the Flathead is an ongoing story concert sponsor, along with The Bookshelf in Kalispell and Sacred Waters Brewing.

The next Flathead Story Concert at Sacred Waters is set for Sept. 17. Potential tellers with inspiring or surprising stories can submit them for consideration until Aug. 15.
