Peacocks are known for their stunning physical appearance and beauty. Peacock is a male species that has a beautiful crest of feathers on its head. There are two types of Peacocks found on this earth. One is The Indian Peacock, and the other is the Burmese Peacock. The difference between both types of peacocks is their type of crest. While the Indian Peacock has a tuft of hair on its crest, the Burmese Peacock has a Pointed Crest.

Apart from the distinctive crest, Peacock has beautiful and colourful feathers on its back. The long and bright tail of the peacock is known as a train. Violet in colour, the feathers of the Peacock are very long and beautiful. The moon-like spots on Peacock's feathers make the shape of an eye when fully opened. In contrast to the upper feathers that are bright violet in colour and big, the back wings are dull brown and short in size.

Blue in colour, Peacock, has a beautiful neck, and when he dances, his neck looks graceful and bright. While Peacock is a male bird, Peahen is a female bird and lacks some beautiful features, unlike Peacock. Peahen doesn't have a distinctive crest on her head and is generally smaller in size than Peacock. Also, Peahen doesn't have beautiful feathers like Peacock and has dull looks.

Peacocks are a shy species and prefer to stay in a group. The group has many peahens and a few peacocks. They are found in all parts of the country and choose to live in Gardens and Jungles. Due to their heavy wings, Peacocks cannot fly high and like to run when there is any danger. Peacocks live in a warm temperature, and that is why they are mostly found in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. At night, they like to sleep at the lower branches of a tree. Whenever they see any danger, they alert other peacocks in their shrill voice.

Peacocks and Peahens are omnivorous species and thus feed on grains, snakes and insects. They kill the unwanted insects and snakes from the fields that otherwise destroy the crops and therefore are helpful for farmers.

Peacocks love rainy weather and they express their joy by dancing when the rain comes. When they dance, their wings get fully opened, and it is an astonishing sight to witness. Many people desire to witness this sight but only a few people could experience it. The spectacular sight has been a great inspiration for many artists. Due to their remarkable beauty, peacock wings are used for decoration purposes as well.

Peacocks have not only astonishing beauty but also have huge cultural importance from ancient times. Many legends and myths from Indian History involve peacocks. There is a saying that the famous Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built a peacock-shaped throne for himself, which was later renamed the Peacock Throne. The Peacock throne is known for its beauty and pride. From ancient times, artists have been expressing the beauty of peacocks in their sculptures and paintings, and that is why the national bird Peacock has its significant importance and Pride Worldwide.

Birds are living organisms with the ability to fly high into the sky. Birds have large feathers that aid in lifting their bodies into the air. There are hundreds of different kinds of birds on the planet, and each one is unique. The peacock, for example, has a spectacular tail made of lovely feathers; the parrot can learn to speak; the crow is the brightest bird in the kingdom; a hummingbird can sing, and the nightingale bird is also noted for its sweet voice. Each bird is unique in terms of its powers and appearance.

Birds have a strong bond with nature. They live in woodlands and build their nests in bushes and trees. Most birds live in the refuge it creates. They play a crucial role in our ecology and food chain. Carnivorous birds consume rodents, insects, and even snakes, which helps to keep their numbers under control.  Birds also devour the carcasses of other animals, helping to maintain the environment free of rotting debris. Seeds are dispersed by herbivorous birds, who consume both plants and animals, and omnivore birds, which eat solely plants and fruits. This occurs when birds consume the entire fruit but leave the seeds on the ground. These seeds germinate and sprout into new plants. This aids in the wonderful expansion of the ecosystem. Birds are a sign of hope that flies above us and reminds us that, above us, there's always something.

The bird peacock is known for its breathtaking beauty. It has been the symbol of many royal kingdoms and empires, especially in India. Humans have adored its beauty for centuries. Even the God of love in Hinduism, Krishna, is crowned with peacock feathers. The colorful peacock feathers look very beautiful when the male peacock dances in the rain to attract the peahens.

Peacocks mainly live in forests. They are primarily found in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. Peacocks are omnivores, i.e. they eat both plants and animals. They eat small insects, rodents, seeds, and berries in the forests. They are genuinely majestic birds.

200 Words Essay On Peacock

Peacock, the royal and majestic bird, is India's national bird. It is known for its breathtaking and exquisite beauty. They are pretty large-sized birds and are often found in the wild only. They like to sit on high-rise places and trees such as peepal and banyan. They are timid and avoid all kinds of human encounters. In India, peacocks are primarily found in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana.

The voice of the peacock is sharp and loud. It can squeak up to even 2 km to warn its group if it faces any danger. A group of peacocks is called pride.

The body of the peacock is bright blue and purple. It can fly, but the flight distance is minimal since it has enormous wings and heavy body weight. A full-grown adult peacock can weigh up to 5-6 kg. Peacocks usually walk on forest floors. One of the most notable features of the male peacock is their dance during rainy seasons. The purpose of the dance is to impress female peafowls.

Since peacocks are magnificent, their beauty attracts hunters and poachers too. Many of them hunt the peacocks for display and trophies. Peacocks are also killed for their colorful feathers. In India, hunting and poaching of peacocks are banned under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972.

500 Words Essay On Peacock

Be like a peacock and dance with all your beauty—such is the aura and charisma of this royal bird, peacock. It has been the symbol of rain, dance, colors, royalty, novelty and magnificent beauty for centuries. With its long slender blue neck and feathers coloured with a range of vibrant shades, peacock becomes a showstopper for everyone.

About Peacock

Peacock is the national bird of India. They are pretty large birds with the ability to fly a short distance. Their body can weigh up to 5 to 6 kg, while their length from the tip of the beak to the end of the train is 190 to 230 cm. The head, neck and breast of the peacock are of royal blue colour. They have white patches around their eyes.

The beautiful tail of the peacock is called the train. There are over 200 colourful and bright feathers in the tail which the peacock puts up for display during its dance. The train of the peacock fully develops four years after hatching.

Since the peacock is a wild bird, they are primarily found in dense jungles of Asia and Africa. There are two Asian and one African species of the peacock. These are—the Indian peafowl, the Green peafowl, and the Congo peafowl.

Peacocks are omnivorous birds. They like eating all kinds of foods, including berries, leaves, figs, seeds, worms, and small reptiles. They balance the ecosystem by feeding on pests and insects, but sometimes they can even create a nuisance by raiding the tomato and pepper fields. Peacocks are hunted for their feathers, but in some parts of the world, they are killed for novelty meat.

My Garden And Peacocks

I have a very lush green and beautiful garden in my village in Uttar Pradesh. During July and August, in the months of rain and spring, many beautiful birds and animals visit my garden. But my favourite time is when I encounter the magnificent and brightly coloured peacocks. They frequent my garden almost everyday during rainy seasons and sit on the tallest peepal tree. But when no one is around, they even come down on the grass and dance during the rain. It is a very serene experience to watch them. I also love collecting the beautiful feathers they shed in the garden.

I once even petted a peacock. Its royal blue skin was so smooth. The peacock was initially hesitant, but soon it became comfortable with me. From that day, I even began to feed them grains and fruits. They loved munching on raw tomatoes and pears.

There are more than 100,000 peacocks worldwide, but a few species of peacocks, such as the green peacock, are endangered. Species like Congo peafowl are vulnerable, with a population below 10,000.

Hunting peacocks is a punishable offense in India under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1992. This royal bird must be protected in other countries. It should be ensured that the feather industries use only shredded feathers and do not hunt or kill peacocks for their needs.

The peacock is famous for its courtship dance with the females. Having such unique characteristics, it is the national bird of India. Since peacocks are protected birds, they cannot be kept as pets at home. You can enjoy watching peacocks from a distance in their natural environment.

A short essay on any subject gives children the opportunity to practice before taking on long essays. Here is an example of a short essay on peacocks:

Peacocks are beautiful birds known worldwide because of their wonderful colour and majestic feathers. The males of this species have long tail feathers that open up like an umbrella to attract the females. Peacocks are found throughout India. They are the country’s national bird. They are very resilient and can live anywhere from deserts to rainforests and suburban areas.

Peacocks are shy birds seldom seen by humans, although they live close to villages and cities. Being large in size, they spend most of their time running across and take flight only when threatened. These birds are omnivores and are known to eat snakes and lizards. The peacocks make a distinct “caw” sound that can be heard in the mornings and evenings. They have an average life span between 10 to 25 years and are often found in open fields or sitting on tree trunks.

A long essay can be challenging for children since they need to present facts and a good narrative. Here is an example of an essay on peacocks for class 3:

India is home to several exotic animals. One of those is its national bird, the peacock. Peacocks are famous for their stunning physical appearance. Peacocks have a beautiful crest on their heads and a long tail of feathers, giving them their popularity. When they run around on the ground, their feathers are gathered and look like one long tail. However, in the presence of a female, the peacock spreads its feathers to reveal beautiful eye-like patterns on the feathers.

There are mainly two types of peacocks in the world- the Indian peacock and the Burmese peacock. The Indian peacock can grow as long as 195 to 225 cm from head to tail. They can weigh up to 5 kilos when fully mature. The colour is iridescent blue with some green hues in the feathers. The feather of the peacock is called a train. An adult peacock can have over 200 of these long feathers. Each feather has a beautiful oval-shaped eye at the end of the feather. Together they give a beautifully symmetric eye-like pattern to the tail.

Peacocks are found throughout the country. They live in forests, semi-arid regions and also in close proximity to humans. However, unlike other birds, peacocks are very shy and run away when they encounter human beings from a distance. They are capable of flying but cannot sustain it for a very long time because of the size of their body and feathers. Peacocks live in groups with several males and females. They are omnivorous birds that feed on seeds, snakes and insects. They are often welcome by farmers as they drive away pests from the fields.

Peacocks are absolutely stunning birds that should only be marvelled at from a distance. We should take care of the environment, so these birds have a future alongside human beings.

Children are often instructed to write an essay on peacocks as part of their competitions and tests. The examples above are well suited for this assignment. Children can pick up important facts about these birds and also learn how to frame their own essays on the subject.

The female lays approximately 4-6 eggs, and the number of eggs is due to the health of the female and the availability of food for her.

The female incubates the eggs for 28-30 days.

The female takes care of her young and protects them, and the young follow her mother for 8-10 months, when they are fully grown.

Essay on The Peacock

the peacock essay

The peacock is a very beautiful bird. Its neck and body are covered with bright blue feathers. The most beautiful part of its body is the long tail. The peacock can spread the tail like a huge fan.

It usually does it in the morning, when the first rays of the sun appear.

The peahen is not for beautiful and her feathers are brown. She has no long tail. The peacock lives in jungles, in small flocks.

It eats small snakes, Lizards, insects, and seeds. Though it is very beautiful, its voice is very ugly.

It is a harsh scream, that could frighten you in the jungle.

Rudy Giuliani is served indictment papers at his own birthday party after mocking Arizona attorney general

PHOENIX — Arizona’s Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes on Friday announced that Rudy Giuliani had been served with the notice of his indictment in connection with an alleged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results in Arizona.

The announcement came less than two hours after a social media post from Giuliani taunted Mayes for failing to deliver his indictment. The notice was served to Giuliani during a celebration in Palm Beach, Florida, for his 80th birthday.

In a now-deleted post on X, Giuliani taunted Arizona authorities. “If Arizona authorities can’t find me by tomorrow morning; 1. They must dismiss the indictment; 2. They must concede they can’t count votes,” Giuliani posted Friday night. Accompanying the message was a photo of Giuliani smiling with six others and balloons arranged behind them.

An hour and 14 minutes later, Mayes responded to Giuliani ’s post , writing, “The final defendant was served moments ago. @RudyGiuliani, nobody is above the law.”

Giuliani, 79, turns 80 on May 28 and was enjoying an early birthday celebration in Palm Beach on the night he was served, according to social media activity . By the end of the night, “Happy Birthday to You” wasn’t the only music the former New York City mayor had to face.

Rudy Giuliani.

The party was hosted by Caroline Wren, an adviser to Arizona U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake.

Ted Goodman, a spokesperson for Giuliani, said Wren was unperturbed by the birthday bash bust-up. “The mayor was unfazed by the decision to try and embarrass him during his 80th birthday party. He enjoyed an incredible evening with hundreds of people who love him — from all walks of life — and we look forward to full vindication soon,” Goodman said in a statement to NBC News.

Others indicted in the “fake electors” case are further along in their legal proceedings. On Friday morning, former Trump attorney John Eastman pleaded not guilty to charges related to an alleged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results in Arizona. Eleven other defendants are slated to be arraigned on Tuesday.

The Arizona “fake electors” scheme isn’t the only controversy Giuliani has faced in the wake of efforts to overturn the 2020 election. In December 2023, Giuliani was hit with a $148 million verdict for defaming two Georgia election workers.

Comcast Plans Streaming Bundle With Netflix and Apple TV+

The bundle, called StreamSaver, is the latest joint effort from entertainment companies looking to woo price-weary customers.

The Comcast NBCUniversal building in Los Angeles, which is gray with blue rectangles on it.

By Benjamin Mullin

Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, is planning to offer its streaming service Peacock in a bundle with Netflix and Apple TV+, Brian Roberts, the company’s chief executive, said at an investor conference on Tuesday.

Called StreamSaver, the bundle will be sold at a deep discount compared with subscribing to all three services separately, Mr. Roberts said. He didn’t specify a price for the service, which is expected to debut this month.

“We’ve been bundling video successfully and creatively for 60 years,” Mr. Roberts said. “This is the latest iteration of that. And I think this will be a pretty compelling package.”

Over the past year, several entertainment companies have joined forces to entice customers who are weary of signing up and paying for numerous individual streaming services.

Warner Bros. Discovery, Fox and Disney announced this year that they were teaming up to offer a streaming service with games from the National Basketball Association and the National Football League. Last week, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery said they would bundle their streaming services, selling users a package that included Disney+, Hulu and Max.

Comcast has long offered its users a menu of streaming services on Xfinity, its package of services that includes cable television and broadband internet. For years, the company has offered services like Netflix and Apple TV+ as add-ons to its existing television bundle, acting as a vendor for those companies. This is the first time that Comcast will offer both services as part of a discounted bundle.

Comcast, which has millions of broadband and cable television customers across the United States, has different incentives to bundle streaming services than many of its competitors have. If Comcast can give its customers additional reasons to stick with the company, or persuade them to pay for more features through Xfinity, the effort to bundle services will have been worth it.

Many other internet providers have sold bundles that include streaming services. When Disney+ launched, Verizon offered a promotional bundle with that service. When the short-lived, short-form streaming service Quibi launched, T-Mobile offered to bundle its wireless offering with that service.

Comcast has been willing to spend big to gain a foothold in the competitive video streaming business. Peacock, which launched in 2020, lost $2.7 billion last year, Comcast said in a filing, but paying subscribers increased to 31 million. The company has said Peacock’s losses were narrowing as the service matured.

TikTok is testing 60-minute videos, which could be a big threat to YouTube

  • TikTok is testing 60-minute videos, challenging YouTube's long-form content domain.
  • TikTok has gradually increased its maximum video length to 10 minutes for all users.
  • Longer videos may shift viewership from streaming services such as YouTube.

Insider Today

TikTok is giving some users the option to upload 60-minute videos to the platform. That could spell trouble for YouTube and other streaming giants.

The pilot was first publicly spotted by the social-media analyst Matt Navarra . TikTok confirmed the feature to TechCrunch on Thursday.

It's unclear which regions the update is available in and whether it will be accessible to more users. The company told TechCrunch it didn't have immediate plans to make the function widely available.

Related stories

The update is the latest effort by the Chinese-owned social-media platform to expand its product offerings as user growth slows . When it first launched, the platform allowed creators to post only 60-second videos. The limit is now 10 minutes for all users and 15 for some creators. The TikTok competitors Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts offer similar upload lengths.

The test would put TikTok in the same weight class as YouTube. It would let content creators upload videos that require longer durations, such as in-depth tutorials or family and college vlogs , which are popular on YouTube.

YouTube beats TikTok in terms of overall users in the US. In a Pew Research Center survey conducted last year, 83% of the US adults surveyed said they used YouTube, while 33% said they used TikTok. Among respondents ages 18 to 29, 62% told Pew they used TikTok, but 93% said they used YouTube.

But TikTok is ahead of YouTube by minutes watched: Last year, Business Insider's sister company, eMarketer , predicted that in 2024, adult TikTok users would average 55 minutes a day on the platform — five minutes more than YouTube's average.

"Because of TikTok's shorter content, the platform risks users discovering clipped content and leaving the platform to watch the full version on YouTube," the eMarketer analyst Sara Lebow wrote in December. "Increasing video length could prevent a user from watching half of a video essay on TikTok and finishing the content on YouTube."

Last week, BI reported that Google leaders were encouraging employees who sold ads to capitalize on the possibility of a US TikTok ban by engaging in "thoughtful conversation" with clients about the ban.

TikTok didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

The longer video feature may also threaten other streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+. TikTok has a vast library of unofficially uploaded short clips from popular television shows and movies, which users binge-watch to see the show in full. Access to longer videos of shows may make this activity more commonplace.

Television networks are tapping into TikTok, too. Last year, the streaming platform Peacock uploaded a pilot episode of its comedy show "Killing It" to TikTok. The episode, which was uploaded in five parts, received millions of views. A longer video duration would mean episodes can be uploaded in one go, and viewership may shift from streaming services to TikTok.

On February 28, Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, joined 31 other media groups and filed a $2.3 billion suit against Google in Dutch court, alleging losses suffered due to the company's advertising practices.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Peacock Content Spending Patterns Show Shifting Priorities

By Tyler Aquilina

  • Peacock Content Spending Patterns Show Shifting Priorities 1 day ago
  • 2024 Streaming Hits Point Way to Post-Peak TV IP Strategy 1 week ago
  • What Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney Stand to Gain From Streaming Bundle Partnership 2 weeks ago

Photo illustration of the dots from the Peacock logo being fed into a coin slot

Peacock may not be flying very high in the years ahead.

After nearly tripling its content spending between 2021 and 2023, the Comcast-owned streaming service is now expected to increase expenses much more moderately. A new forecast by S&P Global Market Intelligence projects 12% growth in content spending for Peacock this year, with that growth shrinking to just 3% annually by 2026.

That translates to a projected spend of $5 billion this year, up from $4.4 billion in 2023 and increasing to $5.7 billion by 2028.

That’s a massive leap from the $1.5 billion put toward content on the service in 2021, of course, and would mean the platform will still fulfill Comcast’s pre-Netflix Correction goal of boosting spending to $5 billion annually.

Yet the projected low-single-digit growth in the years ahead — a virtual plateau after the massive expansion of the past few years — suggests Comcast is striving to get Peacock’s balance sheet into better shape, having lost $8.5 billion on the service to date.

Perhaps even more noteworthy, however, is the proportion of spending that will go toward original content . Over the next five years, originals will account for less than a fourth of Peacock’s total programming budget by S&P Global’s forecast, with spending growing by less than 10% annually between 2024 and 2028.

Peacock has never been the most prolific producer of originals; it released fewer than 60 original TV titles in its peak year, 2022, and dropped to under 30 in 2023 — the lowest total of the eight biggest SVODs last year, per production data from Luminate.

Should the S&P forecast hold true, original series will likely become even less of a priority for Peacock, a striking reversal from past conventional streaming wisdom that highlights the profound industry shifts underway in the post-peak TV era .

Indeed, Comcast leadership essentially said as much on the company’s most recent earnings call, albeit without mentioning specific spending targets. “I think you can expect to see us having a very broad approach [to content],” Comcast president Mike Cavanagh said. “It’s sports, it’s originals, it’s next-day airing of NBC content, it’s our library, and it’s our Pay-1 movies.”

Where, then, is the more than 75% of that $5 billion content budget earmarked for “acquired” content going? “The bulk of spending,” according to S&P Global, will go towards films and TV series, including the Universal movies Peacock pays its own sister studio to license under the companies’ current Pay 1 arrangement .

Peacock licenses content from other studios as well. All eight of Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter” films are incongruously available on the platform, and the SVOD infamously acquired the rights to stream Paramount’s crown jewel “Yellowstone” in a pre-Paramount+ deal .

But a significant chunk of spending will also go toward live sports rights, and those outlays “could swell even further,” as S&P Global analysts noted, “if Comcast adds NBA or other major sports rights to its portfolio.”

SEE ALSO: Exclusive VIP+ Survey Shows Consumers Strongly Interested in Paramount+, Peacock Bundle

And with Peacock parent NBCUniversal currently making a grab for Turner Sports’ longtime NBA package, it’s reasonable to assume the SVOD will play a role in NBCU’s plans for coverage.

After all, Peacock paid $110 million to stream an exclusive NFL playoff game last year and will continue to jockey for future broadcasts. (The SVOD will stream a season opener from Brazil this fall; financial terms of that arrangement were not disclosed.)

Considering the playoff game generated record-breaking viewership and a surprisingly sticky audience — 71% of the 3 million Peacock users who signed up for the playoff game remained subscribed after a little over a month, according to analytics firm Antenna — Comcast would almost certainly leverage the NBA to continue drawing new subscribers to Peacock.

This all underlines the changing nature of the SVOD business as the industry continues to reshape itself for a post-streaming wars but still streaming-first future. Whereas subscription platforms were once positioned as original-content factories with libraries tacked on, many are now more explicitly turning into content hubs , where originals are just one piece of a buffet including high-profile live sports and in-demand licensed content .

That mixed approach is the right way forward, particularly for a platform that has attained only 34 million subscribers , as well as notably few original hits. There are many ways of navigating the chaotic streaming landscape, but Peacock’s flight pattern could prove to be a well-chosen course.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

the peacock essay

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

the peacock essay

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

the peacock essay

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

the peacock essay

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

the peacock essay

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

the peacock essay

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

the peacock essay

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
