A PhD is a doctoral research degree and the highest level of academic qualification you can achieve. The degree normally takes between three and four years of full-time work towards a thesis offering an original contribution to your subject.

This page explains what a PhD is, what it involves and what you need to know if you’re considering applying for a PhD research project , or enrolling on a doctoral programme .

The meaning of a PhD

The PhD can take on something of a mythic status. Are they only for geniuses? Do you have to discover something incredible? Does the qualification make you an academic? And are higher research degrees just for people who want to be academics?

Even the full title, ‘Doctor of Philosophy’, has a somewhat mysterious ring to it. Do you become a doctor? Yes, but not that kind of doctor. Do you have to study Philosophy? No (not unless you want to) .

So, before going any further, let's explain what the term 'PhD' actually means and what defines a doctorate.

What does PhD stand for?

PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy. This is one of the highest level academic degrees that can be awarded. PhD is an abbreviation of the Latin term (Ph)ilosophiae (D)octor. Traditionally the term ‘philosophy’ does not refer to the subject but its original Greek meaning which roughly translates to ‘lover of wisdom’.

What is a doctorate?

A doctorate is any qualification that awards a doctoral degree. In order to qualify for one you need to produce advanced work that makes a significant new contribution to knowledge in your field. Doing so earns you the title 'Doctor' – hence the name.

So, is a PhD different to a doctorate? No. A PhD is a type of doctorate .

The PhD is the most common type of doctorate and is awarded in almost all subjects at universities around the world. Other doctorates tend to be more specialised or for more practical and professional projects.

Essentially, all PhDs are doctorates, but not all doctorates are PhDs.

Do you need a Masters to get a PhD?

Not necessarily. It's common for students in Arts and the Humanities to complete an MA (Master of Arts) before starting a PhD in order to acquire research experience and techniques. Students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) don't always need an MS/MSc (Master of Science) to do a PhD as you'll gain training in lab techniques and other skills during your undergraduate degree.

Whether a Masters is a requirement for a PhD also varies by country. Australian PhDs may require a Masters as the equivalent of their own 'honours year' (where students work on research). US PhD programmes often include a Masters.

The origin of the PhD

Despite its name, the PhD isn't actually an Ancient Greek degree. Instead it's a much more recent development. The PhD as we know it was developed in nineteenth-century Germany, alongside the modern research university.

Higher education had traditionally focussed on mastery of an existing body of scholarship and the highest academic rank available was, appropriately enough, a Masters degree.

As the focus shifted more onto the production of new knowledge and ideas, the PhD degree was brought in to recognise those who demonstrated the necessary skills and expertise.

The PhD process – what's required to get a PhD?

The typical length of a PhD is three to four years full-time, or five to six years part-time.

Unlike most Masters courses (or all undergraduate programmes), a PhD is a pure research degree. But that doesn’t mean you’ll just spend years locked away in a library or laboratory. In fact, the modern PhD is a diverse and varied qualification with many different components.

Whereas the second or third year of a taught degree look quite a lot like the first (with more modules and coursework at a higher level) a PhD moves through a series of stages.

A typical PhD normally involves:

  • Carrying out a literature review (a survey of current scholarship in your field).
  • Conducting original research and collecting your results .
  • Producing a thesis that presents your conclusions.
  • Writing up your thesis and submitting it as a dissertation .
  • Defending your thesis in an oral viva voce exam.

These stages vary a little between subjects and universities, but they tend to fall into the same sequence over the three years of a typical full-time PhD.

The first year of a PhD

The beginning of a PhD is all about finding your feet as a researcher and getting a solid grounding in the current scholarship that relates to your topic.

You’ll have initial meetings with your supervisor and discuss a plan of action based on your research proposal.

The first step in this will almost certainly be carrying out your literature review . With the guidance of your supervisor you’ll begin surveying and evaluating existing scholarship. This will help situate your research and ensure your work is original.

Your literature review will provide a logical jumping off point for the beginning of your own research and the gathering of results . This could involve designing and implementing experiments, or getting stuck into a pile of primary sources.

The year may end with an MPhil upgrade . This occurs when PhD students are initially registered for an MPhil degree and then ‘upgraded’ to PhD candidates upon making sufficient progress. You’ll submit material from your literature review, or a draft of your research findings and discuss these with members of your department in an upgrade exam . All being well, you’ll then continue with your research as a PhD student.

PhDs in other countries

The information on the page is based on the UK. Most countries follow a similar format, but there are some differences. In the USA , for example, PhD students complete reading assignments and examinations before beginning their research. You can find out more in our guides to PhD study around the world .

The second year of a PhD

Your second year will probably be when you do most of your core research. The process for this will vary depending on your field, but your main focus will be on gathering results from experiments, archival research, surveys or other means.

As your research develops, so will the thesis (or argument) you base upon it. You may even begin writing up chapters or other pieces that will eventually form part of your dissertation .

You’ll still be having regular meetings with your supervisor. They’ll check your progress, provide feedback on your ideas and probably read any drafts your produce.

The second year is also an important stage for your development as a scholar. You’ll be well versed in current research and have begun to collect some important data or develop insights of your own. But you won’t yet be faced with the demanding and time-intensive task of finalising your dissertation.

So, this part of your PhD is a perfect time to think about presenting your work at academic conferences , gaining teaching experience or perhaps even selecting some material for publication in an academic journal. You can read more about these kinds of activities below.

The third year of a PhD

The third year of a PhD is sometimes referred to as the writing up phase.

Traditionally, this is the final part of your doctorate, during which your main task will be pulling together your results and honing your thesis into a dissertation .

In reality, it’s not always as simple as that.

It’s not uncommon for final year PhD students to still be fine-tuning experiments, collecting results or chasing up a few extra sources. This is particularly likely if you spend part of your second year focussing on professional development.

In fact, some students actually take all or part of a fourth year to finalise their dissertation. Whether you are able to do this will depend on the terms of your enrolment – and perhaps your PhD funding .

Eventually though, you are going to be faced with writing up your thesis and submitting your dissertation.

Your supervisor will be very involved in this process. They’ll read through your final draft and let you know when they think your PhD is ready for submission.

All that’s left then is your final viva voce oral exam. This is a formal discussion and defence of your thesis involving at least one internal and external examiner. It’s normally the only assessment procedure for a PhD. Once you’ve passed, you’ve done it!

Doing a PhD – what's it actually like?

You can think of the ‘stages’ outlined above as the basic ‘roadmap’ for a PhD, but the actual ‘journey’ you’ll take as a research student involves a lot of other sights, a few optional destinations and at least one very important fellow passenger.

Carrying out research

Unsurprisingly, you’ll spend most of your time as a PhD researcher… researching your PhD. But this can involve a surprisingly wide range of activities.

The classic image of a student working away in the lab, or sitting with a pile of books in the library is true some of the time – particularly when you’re monitoring experiments or conducting your literature review.

Your PhD can take you much further afield though. You may find yourself visiting archives or facilities to examine their data or look at rare source materials. You could even have the opportunity to spend an extended period ‘in residence’ at a research centre or other institution beyond your university.

Research is also far from being a solitary activity. You’ll have regular discussions with your supervisor (see below) but you may also work with other students from time to time.

This is particularly likely if you’re part of a larger laboratory or workshop group studying the same broad area. But it’s also common to collaborate with students whose projects are more individual. You might work on shorter projects of joint interest, or be part of teams organising events and presentations.

Many universities also run regular internal presentation and discussion groups – a perfect way to get to know other PhD students in your department and offer feedback on each other’s work in progress.

Working with your supervisor

All PhD projects are completed with the guidance of at least one academic supervisor . They will be your main point of contact and support throughout the PhD.

Your supervisor will be an expert in your general area of research, but they won’t have researched on your exact topic before (if they had, your project wouldn’t be original enough for a PhD).

As such, it’s better to think of your supervisor as a mentor, rather than a teacher.

As a PhD student you’re now an independent and original scholar, pushing the boundaries of your field beyond what is currently known (and taught) about it. You’re doing all of this for the first time, of course. But your supervisor isn’t.

They’ll know what’s involved in managing an advanced research project over three years (or more). They’ll know how best to succeed, but they’ll also know what can go wrong and how to spot the warning signs before it does.

Perhaps most importantly, they’ll be someone with the time and expertise to listen to your ideas and help provide feedback and encouragement as you develop your thesis.

Exact supervision arrangements vary between universities and between projects:

  • In Science and Technology projects it’s common for a supervisor to be the lead investigator on a wider research project, with responsibility for a laboratory or workshop that includes several PhD students and other researchers.
  • In Arts and Humanities subjects, a supervisor’s research is more separate from their students’. They may supervise more than one PhD at a time, but each project is essentially separate.

It’s also becoming increasingly common for PhD students to have two (or more) supervisors. The first is usually responsible for guiding your academic research whilst the second is more concerned with the administration of your PhD – ensuring you complete any necessary training and stay on track with your project’s timetable.

However you’re supervised, you’ll have regular meetings to discuss work and check your progress. Your supervisor will also provide feedback on work during your PhD and will play an important role as you near completion: reading your final dissertation draft, helping you select an external examiner and (hopefully) taking you out for a celebratory drink afterwards!

Professional development, networking and communication

Traditionally, the PhD has been viewed as a training process, preparing students for careers in academic research.

As such, it often includes opportunities to pick up additional skills and experiences that are an important part of a scholarly CV. Academics don’t just do research after all. They also teach students, administrate departments – and supervise PhDs.

The modern PhD is also viewed as a more flexible qualification. Not all doctoral graduates end up working in higher education. Many follow alternative careers that are either related to their subject of specialism or draw upon the advanced research skills their PhD has developed.

PhD programmes have begun to reflect this. Many now emphasise transferrable skills or include specific training units designed to help students communicate and apply their research beyond the university.

What all of this means is that very few PhD experiences are just about researching and writing up a thesis.

The likelihood is that you’ll also do some (or all) of the following during your PhD:

The work is usually paid and is increasingly accompanied by formal training and evaluation.

Conference presentation

As a PhD student you’ll be at the cutting edge of your field, doing original research and producing new results. This means that your work will be interest to other scholars and that your results could be worth presenting at academic conferences .

Doing this is very worthwhile, whatever your career plans. You’ll develop transferrable skills in public speaking and presenting, gain feedback on your results and begin to be recognised as an expert in your area.

Conferences are also great places to network with other students and academics.

Publication

As well as presenting your research, you may also have the opportunity to publish work in academic journals, books, or other media. This can be a challenging process.

Your work will be judged according to the same high standards as any other scholar’s and will normally go through extensive peer review processes. But it’s also highly rewarding. Seeing your work ‘in print’ is an incredible validation of your PhD research and a definite boost to your academic CV.

Public engagement and communication

Academic work may be associated with the myth of the ‘ivory tower’ – an insular community of experts focussing on obscure topics of little interest outside the university. But this is far from the case. More and more emphasis is being placed on the ‘impact’ of research and its wider benefits to the public – with funding decisions being made accordingly.

Thankfully, there are plenty of opportunities to try your hand at public engagement as a PhD student. Universities are often involved in local events and initiatives to communicate the benefits of their research, ranging from workshops in local schools to public lectures and presentations.

Some PhD programmes include structured training in order to help students with activities such as the above. Your supervisor may also be able to help by identifying suitable conferences and public engagement opportunities, or by involving you in appropriate university events and public engagement initiatives.

These experiences will be an important part of your development as a researchers - and will enhance the value of your PhD regardless of your career plans.

What is a PhD for – and who should study one?

So, you know what a PhD actually is, what’s involved in completing one and what you might get up to whilst you do. That just leaves one final question: should you do a PhD?

Unfortunately, it’s not a question we can answer for you.

A PhD is difficult and uniquely challenging. It requires at least three years of hard work and dedication after you’ve already completed an undergraduate degree (and probably a Masters degree too).

You’ll need to support yourself during those years and, whilst you will be building up an impressive set of skills, you won’t be directly progressing in a career.

But a PhD is also immensely rewarding. It’s your chance to make a genuine contribution to the sum of human knowledge and produce work that other researchers can (and will) build on in future. However obscure your topic feels, there’s really no such thing as a useless PhD.

A PhD is also something to be incredibly proud of. A proportionately tiny number of people go on to do academic work at this level. Whatever you end up doing after your doctorate you’ll have an impressive qualification – and a title to match. What’s more, non-academic careers and professions are increasingly recognising the unique skills and experience a PhD brings.

Other PhDs - do degree titles matter?

Speak to your lecturers / tutors

The best people to ask about PhD study are people who’ve earned one. Ask staff at your current or previous university about their experience of doctoral research – what they enjoyed, what they didn’t and what their tips might be.

If you’re considering a PhD for an academic career, ask about that too. Are job prospects good in your field? And what’s it really like to work at a university?

Speak to current PhD students

What is a PhD?

  • Types of Doctorates
  • A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest globally recognized postgraduate degree that higher education institutions can award.

Definition of a PhD – A Doctor of Philosophy (commonly abbreviated to PhD , Ph.D or a DPhil ) is a university research degree awarded from across a broad range of academic disciplines; in most countries, it is a terminal degree, i.e. the highest academic degree possible.

PhDs differ from undergraduate and master’s degrees in that PhDs are entirely research-based rather than involving taught modules (although doctoral training centres (DTCs) offer programmes that start with a year of lecture-based teaching to help develop your research skills prior to starting your project).

In most English-speaking countries, those that complete a PhD use the title “Doctor” (typically abbreviated to Dr) in front of their names and are referred to as such within academic and/or research settings. Those that work in fields outside of academia may decide not to use the formal doctor title but use post-nominal letters (e.g. John Smith PhD); it’s unusual though for someone to use both the Doctor title and post-nominal letters in their name.

PhD vs Doctorate

A PhD and a professional doctorate are both research-based terminal degrees.

However, where a PhD focuses on original research mostly around theoretical concepts, a professional doctorate focuses on examining existing knowledge to solve real-life, practical problems.

While there is much crossover between the two, a PhD is generally better suited for an individual to wants to advance the knowledge and understanding in their field, and a professional doctorate degree is better suited to a working professional who wants to better be able to apply knowledge and understanding to their field.

What Are the Entry Requirements for a PhD?

To be accepted on to a PhD programme, students usually need to hold at least a high ( 2:1 and above ) undergraduate degree that is related to the field of research that they want to pursue. A PhD candidate may also be expected to hold a Master’s degree , however, this does not mean you must have one, as it is still possible to enrol into a PhD without a Master’s .

Self-funded courses may sometimes be more relaxed in relation to entry requirements. It may be possible to be accepted onto a self-funded PhD programme with lower grades, though these students typically demonstrate their suitability for the role through professional work experience.

Whilst a distance learning project is possible , most PhD candidates will carry out their research over at least three years based at their university, with regular contact with two academic supervisors (primary and secondary). This is particularly the case for lab-based projects, however, some PhD projects require spending time on-site away from university (e.g. at a specialist research lab or at a collaborating institution abroad).

How Long Does a PhD Take?

Typically, full-time PhDs last 3-4 years and part-time PhDs last 6-7 years. However, at the discretion of the university, the thesis writing-up period can be extended by up to four years.

Although most doctoral programmes start in September or October, they are generally much more flexible than taught-courses and can start at any time of the year.

How Much Does a PhD Cost?

Tuition fees for UK and EU students vary between £3,000 and £6,000 per year, with the average tuition fee of £4,712 per year for 2023/24 programmes.

Tuition fees increase considerably for international students, varying between £16,000 to £25,000 per year, with an average tuition fee of £19,600 per year .

Nonetheless, most students will secure PhD funding in the form of studentships, scholarships and bursaries to help pay for these fees. These funding opportunities can either be partial, which cover tuition fees only, or full, which cover both tuition fees and living expenses.

UK national students can also apply for Doctoral Loans from Student Finance England if they are unable to secure funding.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

What Does a PhD Involve?

To be awarded a PhD, a doctoral student is required to produce a substantial body of work that adds new knowledge to their chosen field.

A PhD programme will typically involve four key stages:

Stage 1: Literature Review

The first year of a PhD involves attending regular meetings with your supervisors and carrying out a search on previously published work in your subject area. This search will be used to produce a literature review which should set the context of the project by explaining the foundation of what is currently known within the field of research, what recent developments have occurred, and where the gaps in knowledge are. In most cases, this will be an extension of your research proposal should you have produced one as part of your application. The literature review should conclude by outlining the overarching aims and objectives of the research project. This stage of setting achievable goals which are original and contribute to the field of research is an essential first step in a successful PhD.

The supervisor is the main point of contact through the duration of a PhD – but remember: they are there to mentor, not to teach, or do it for you . It will be your responsibility to plan, execute and monitor your own work as well as to identify gaps in your own knowledge and address them.

Stage 2: Research

The second year (and prehapse some of your third year) is when you work on your research. Having identified novel research questions from your review of the literature, this is where you collect your data to help answer these questions. How you do this will depend on the nature of your doctoral research: for example, you may design and run experiments in a lab alongside other PhD students or visit excavation sites in remote regions of the world. You should check in regularly with your supervisors to update them and run any ideas or issues past them.

Have the structure and chapters of your thesis in mind as you develop and tackle your research questions. Working with a view of publishing your work will be very valuable later on.

Stage 3: Write up of Thesis

The next key stage of a PhD is writing a doctoral thesis , which typically takes from anywhere between three months to one year. A thesis is a substantial body of work that describes the work and outcomes of the research over the previous two to three years. It should tell a detailed story of the PhD project – focusing on:

  • The motivations for the research questions identified from the literature review.
  • The methodologies used, results obtained, and a comprehensive analysis and discussion of the findings.
  • A detailed discussion of the key findings with an emphasis on the original contributions made to your field of research and how this has been impactful.

There is no universal rule for the length of a PhD thesis, but general guidelines set the word count between 80,000 to 100,000 words.

For your thesis to be successful, it needs to adequately defend your argument and provide a unique or increased insight into your field that was not previously available.

Stage 4: Attending the Viva

A viva voce , most commonly referred to as just a ‘ viva ‘, is an interview-style examination where the PhD student is required to engage in a critical appraisal of their work and defend their thesis against at least two examiners. The examiners will ask questions to check the PhD student has an in-depth understanding of the ideas and theories proposed in their thesis, and whether they have developed the research skills that would be expected of them.

The viva is one of the final steps in achieving a PhD, and typically lasts at least two hours, but this duration can vary depending on the examiners, the university and the PhD project itself.

Once you have done the viva – you’re on the home stretch. You will typically be asked to make some amendments to your thesis based on the examiner’s feedback. You are then ready to submit your final thesis for either:

  • PhD – If you pass the requirements you will be awarded a PhD degree (most common outcome),
  • MPhil – If you failed to meet requirements for a PhD, you may be downgraded to an MPhil degree (uncommon outcome),
  • Fail – No award is given, typically for cases of plagiarism (extremely uncommon outcome).

What Are the Benefits of A PhD?

A PhD is the highest globally recognised postgraduate degree that higher education institutions can award. The degree, which is awarded to candidates who demonstrate original and independent research in a particular field of study, is not only invaluable in itself, but sets you up with invaluable skills and traits.

Career Opportunities

First, a PhD prepares you for a career in academia if you wish to continue in this area. This takes form as a career in the Higher Education sector, typically as a lecturer working their way to becoming a professor leading research on the subject you’ve studied and trained in.

Second, a PhD also enables the opportunity for landing a job in a research & development role outside of the academic environment. Examples of this include laboratory work for a private or third sector company, a governmental role and research for commercial and industrial applications.

Transferable Skills

Finally, in possessing a PhD degree, you can show to employers that you have vital skills that make you an asset to any company. Three examples of the transferable skills that you gain through a PhD are effective communication, time management, and report writing.

  • Communication – presenting your work in written and oral forms using journal papers and podium presentations, shows your ability to share complex ideas effectively and to those with less background knowledge than you. Communication is key in the professional environment, regardless of the job.
  • Time management – The ability to prioritise and organise tasks is a tremendous asset in the professional industry. A PhD holder can use their qualification to demonstrate that they are able to manage their time, arrange and follow a plan, and stick to deadlines.
  • Report writing – Condensing three years of work into a thesis demonstrates your ability to filter through massive amounts of information, identify the key points, and get these points across to the reader. The ability to ‘cut out the waffle’ or ‘get to the point’ is a huge asset in the professional industry.

Aside from the above, you also get to refer to yourself as a Doctor and add fancy initials after your name!

What Can I Do After a PhD?

Alternative types of PhD include:

  • Higher Doctorate - These are usually granted on the recommendation of a committee of internal and external examiners, which assesses a portfolio of published, peer-reviewed research you've undertaken over the course of many years. This type of Doctorate is usually for those with several years of academic experience. Common award titles include the Doctor of Civil Law (DCL), Doctor of Divinity (DD), Doctor of Literature/Letters (DLit/DLitt/LitD/LittD), Doctor of Music (DMus/MusD), Doctor of Science (DS/SD/DSc/ScD) and Doctor of Law (LLD).
  • Integrated/New Route PhD - This four-year PhD course is offered by over 30 universities and involves taking a one-year MRes before studying a three-year PhD. How much does a PhD cost?

Tuition fees vary, but usually fall between £3,000 and £6,000 per year for UK students and those from the European Union (EU) with settled status. UK Research Councils pay universities £4,786 per year (from 2024/25) on behalf of each funded PhD student, so this gives a good indication of the average figure.

For EU students looking to pursue a Doctorate in 2024/25, you'll need to have gained settled or pre-settled status to be eligible for student finance - see PhD loans .

More than 54,000 students earned doctoral degrees in 2016, the latest year for which figures are available, a 30 percent increase since 2000, according to the  National Science Foundation . A Ph.D., also called a doctorate, is a "Doctor of Philosophy" degree, which is a misleading moniker because most Ph.D. holders are not philosophers. The term for this increasingly popular degree derives from the original meaning of the word "philosophy," which comes from the ancient Greek word  philosophia , meaning "love of wisdom."

What Is a Ph.D.?

In that sense, the term "Ph.D." is accurate, because the degree has historically been a license to teach, but it also signifies that the holder is an "authority, in full command of (a given) subject right up to the boundaries of current knowledge, and able to extend them," says  FindAPhD , an online Ph.D. database. Earning a Ph.D. requires a hefty financial and time commitment— $35,000 to $60,000  and two to eight years—as well as research, creating a thesis or dissertation, and possibly some teaching duties.

Deciding to pursue a Ph.D. can represent a major life choice. Doctoral candidates require additional schooling after completing a master's program to earn their Ph.D.: They must complete additional coursework, pass comprehensive exams , and complete an independent dissertation in their field. Once completed, though, a doctoral degree—often called a "terminal degree"—can open doors for the Ph.D.holder, especially in academia but also in business.

Core Courses and Electives

To obtain a Ph.D., you need to take a group of core courses as well as electives, totaling about 60 to 62 "hours," which are roughly the equivalent of units at the bachelor's degree level. For example, Washington State University offers a  Ph.D. in crop science . Core courses, which make up about 18 hours, include such subjects as introduction to population genetics, plant transmission genetics, and plant breeding.

Additionally, the student must make up the remaining required hours through electives. The  Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health  offers a doctoral degree in Biological Sciences in Public Health. After core courses such as laboratory rotations, biological sciences seminars, and core principles of biostatistics and epidemiology, the Ph.D. candidate is required to take electives in related fields such as advanced respiratory physiology, advanced respiratory physiology, and ecological and epidemiological control of parasitic diseases. Degree-granting institutions across the board want to ensure that those who earn Ph.D.s have broad knowledge in their chosen field.

Thesis or Dissertation and Research

A Ph.D. also requires students to complete a large scholarly project known as a  dissertation , a research report—usually 60-plus pages—which signifies that they are able to make significant independent contributions to their chosen field of study. Students take on the project, also known as a  doctoral thesis , after completing the core and elective coursework and passing a  comprehensive examination . Through the dissertation, the student is expected to make a new and creative contribution to a field of study and to demonstrate her expertise.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, for example, a strong medical dissertation relies heavily on the creation of a specific hypothesis that can be either disproved or supported by data collected through independent student research. Further, it must also contain several key elements starting with an introduction to the problem statement, conceptual framework, and research question as well as references to literature already published on the topic. Students must show that the  dissertation  is relevant, provides new insight into the chosen field, and is a topic that they can research independently.

Financial Aid and Teaching

There are several ways to pay for a doctoral degree: scholarships, grants, fellowships, and government loans, as well as teaching.  GoGrad , a graduate school information website, provides such examples as the:

  • Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program, which provides full tuition and an annual stipend of $25,000 to $38,000.

You generally apply for these loans by filling out the free application for federal student aid ( FAFSA ). Students planning to go into teaching after obtaining their doctoral degrees often also supplement their income by teaching undergraduate classes at the schools where they are studying. The University of California, Riverside, for example, offers a "teaching award"—essentially a stipend applied toward tuition costs—for Ph.D. candidates in English who teach undergraduate, beginning-level, English courses

Jobs and Opportunities for Ph.D. Holders

Education accounts for a large percentage doctoral awards, with elementary education, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership and administration, special education, and counselor education/ school counseling topping the list. Most universities in the United States require a Ph.D. for candidates who seek teaching positions, regardless of the department.

Many Ph.D. candidates seek the degree, however, to boost their current salaries. For example, a health, sports, and fitness educator at a community college would realize a bump in annual pay for obtaining a Ph.D. The same holds for educational administrators. Most such positions require only a master's degree, but obtaining a Ph.D. generally leads to an annual stipend that school districts add to the annual salary. That same health and fitness instructor at a community college could also move on from a teaching position and become a dean at a community college—a position that requires a Ph.D.—boosting his pay to  $120,000 to $160,000  a year or more.

So, the opportunities for a doctoral degree holder are wide and varied, but the cost and commitment required are significant. Most experts say you should know your future career plans before you make the commitment. If you know what you want to get out of the degree, then the years of required study and sleepless nights may well be worth the investment.

Sometimes students can apply for a fellowship (such as the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Program in the United States) that relieves them of any obligations to be a teaching or research assistant. Doctoral programs in the US tend to be better funded than in the rest of the world.

Sometimes, PhD degrees can be completed part-time, but this is rare. Students are usually expected to devote at least 40 hours a week to their research and work as teaching or research assistants.

The main cost of doctoral programs comes in the form of opportunity cost—all the years that students could be working a regular, full-time job, which usually pays much better than a graduate school stipend.

The average wage premium for PhDs is 26%, which is not much higher than the master’s degree premium.

In the US, the application process is similar for master’s and PhD programs. Both will generally ask for:

  • At least one application essay, often called a personal statement or statement of purpose .
  • Letters of recommendation .
  • A resume or CV .
  • Transcripts.
  • Writing samples.

Applications for both types of programs also often require a standardized test. PhDs usually require the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), which tries to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative, critical thinking , and analytical writing skills. Many master’s programs require this test as well.

Applying for a master’s

Master’s degrees programs will often ask you to respond to specific essay prompts that may ask you to reflect upon not just your academic background, but also your personal character and future career ambitions.

Northwestern University’s Kellogg Business School requires Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) applicants write two essays, one about a recent time they demonstrated leadership and the second about their personal values.

Who you should ask for your letters of recommendation varies by program. If you are applying to a research-intensive master’s program, then you should choose former professors or research supervisors. For other programs, particularly business school, current work supervisors may be a better choice.

Some professional master’s programs require a specific test. For example, to apply to law school, you must take the Law School Admissions Test, or LSAT. For business school, you must take either the GRE or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).

Applying for a PhD

When applying for a PhD, your resume should focus more on your research background—you should especially emphasize any publications you’ve authored or presentations that you’ve given.

Similarly, your statement of purpose should discuss research that you’ve participated in, whether as an assistant or the lead author. You should detail what exactly you did in projects you’ve contributed to, whether that’s conducting a literature review, coding regressions, or writing an entire article.

Your letters of recommendations should be from former professors or supervisors who can speak to your abilities and potential as a researcher. A good rule of thumb is to avoid asking for recommendations from anyone who does not themselves have a PhD.

A master’s is a 1- or 2-year graduate degree that can prepare you for a variety of careers.

All master’s involve graduate-level coursework. Some are research-intensive and intend to prepare students for further study in a PhD; these usually require their students to write a master’s thesis . Others focus on professional training for a specific career.

A PhD, which is short for philosophiae doctor (doctor of philosophy in Latin), is the highest university degree that can be obtained. In a PhD, students spend 3–5 years writing a dissertation , which aims to make a significant, original contribution to current knowledge.

A PhD is intended to prepare students for a career as a researcher, whether that be in academia, the public sector, or the private sector.

This depends on the country. In the United States, you can generally go directly to a PhD  with only a bachelor’s degree, as a master’s program is included as part of the doctoral program.

Elsewhere, you generally need to graduate from a research-intensive master’s degree before continuing to the PhD.

This varies by country. In the United States, PhDs usually take between 5–7 years: 2 years of coursework followed by 3–5 years of independent research work to produce a dissertation.

In the rest of the world, students normally have a master’s degree before beginning the PhD, so they proceed directly to the research stage and complete a PhD in 3–5 years.

A master’s degree usually has a higher upfront cost, but it also allows you to start earning a higher salary more quickly. The exact cost depends on the country and the school: private universities usually cost more than public ones, and European degrees usually cost less than North American ones. There are limited possibilities for financial aid.

PhDs often waive tuition fees and offer a living stipend in exchange for a teaching or research assistantship. However, they take many years to complete, during which time you earn very little.

In the US, the graduate school application process is similar whether you’re applying for a master’s or a PhD . Both require letters of recommendation , a statement of purpose or personal statement , a resume or CV , and transcripts. Programs in the US and Canada usually also require a certain type of standardized test—often the GRE.

Outside the US, PhD programs usually also require applicants to write a research proposal , because students are expected to begin dissertation research in the first year of their PhD.

The benefits of college degrees, be it associate, B.A., M.A. or Ph.D level, have been touted and restated many times. Despite rising costs, the investment continues to be valuable one for a wide variety of people. That said, back it up a little bit: just what do all those different degree acronyms mean? Beyond that, what differentiates, say, a B.B.A. from a BSN?

Associate Degrees

An associate degree is typically completed in two years of full-time study, but may take longer for part-time students. These undergraduate programs can be found at community colleges, vocational schools, technical colleges, and some universities. In general, associate degrees fall into three different categories: Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science (A.S.), or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.).

Associate degrees are a great fit for career-oriented students who want to enter a technical or vocational trade that requires some post secondary education. Along with often being the quickest and cheapest route to a formal degree, an associate program can also be a stepping stone to a four-year degree. Many schools offer students the option to apply credits earned from an associate degree, which is generally 60 semester credits, towards a bachelor’s degree.

A.A. Associate of Arts

The associate of arts is a basic-level undergraduate degree granted upon completion of a two-year program, usually at community or junior college, technical college or trade school. As such, these are typically a jumping off point towards pursuing a full bachelor’s degree.

A.S. Associate of Science

Similar to the A.A., the associate of science degree is the culmination of a two-year academic program. The A.S. is usually awarded to junior college students enrolled in science or tech-related programs.

Bachelor’s Degrees

A bachelor’s degree is the most popular post-secondary degree option, and typically seen as the standard for employment in most professional fields. In most cases, a bachelor’s program takes four years of full-time study to complete. However, some majors may take longer, or schools may offer accelerated programs allowing students to finish their degree in less time.

The two most common types of bachelor’s degrees are the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.). There are a number of other options, though, that coincide with more specific major fields, such as the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.). Generally, a bachelor’s degree consists of 120 semester credits, with half being made up of general education or liberal arts courses. The other half is typically filled with courses geared toward a student’s particular major.

B.A. Bachelor of Arts

The usual degree path for majors in liberal arts, humanities or social sciences such as English, creative writing, fine arts or political science. A B.A. is typically awarded upon completion of a four-year undergraduate program at a traditional school or university.

B.S. Bachelor of Science

The bachelor’s typically awarded to undergraduates in science and technical fields.

B.F.A. Bachelor of Fine Arts

Awarded to majors like art history, theater, film studies and photography.

B.B.A. Bachelor of Business Administration

A business-oriented bachelor’s path, typically associated with management, accounting, marketing, etc.

B.Arch Bachelor of Architecture

A bachelor’s degree geared towards the architecture field.

BSN Bachelor of Science in Nursing

A degree path oriented towards the technical and hands-on training necessary to obtain a nursing license.

B.E. Bachelor of Engineering

Concentrates on engineering fields like electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer engineering.

Master’s Degrees

Master’s degrees are graduate-level programs that typically take two years of additional full-time study after completion of a bachelor’s degree. Because most graduate students are already working professionals, many colleges and universities offer part-time or flexible master’s degree programs. These allow students to maintain their career while completing the degree at their own pace, but generally take longer than two years of study.

In order to apply for a master’s program, students usually must already possess a bachelor’s degree. Most students choose to pursue a master’s degree in order to advance in their chosen profession or enter a field that requires a high level of education. Many programs fall into one of two categories: Master of Arts (M.A.) or Master of Science (M.S.). The Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) is another popular option.

M.A. Master of Arts

The basic graduate-level degree granted to grad students in fields in the humanities, social sciences or fine arts.

M.B.A. Master of Business Administration

The Master of Business Administration is the master-level degree granted upon completion of a business administration or management-oriented program. In contrast to an M.A., M.B.A. programs are typically oriented around subjects more narrowly tailored towards business operations like accounting, marketing and analysis.

M.S. Master of Science

Typically awarded to graduate students in scientific or technical fields.

M.S.W. Master of Social Work

Similar to the M.B.A., the Master of Social Work is narrowly defined master’s degree focused on social work. M.S.W. programs may adhere to either a clinical track or practice track. The clinical track is oriented towards working with patients, while the practice track focuses on politics and policy as well as management.

Doctoral Degrees

A doctorate is the highest level of academic degree awarded by universities, and can take anywhere from three to eight years (or more) to complete. Some doctoral programs require students to already have a master’s before enrolling, while others can be started directly after completion of undergraduate study.

There are many different types of doctoral degrees, but the most common is the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Depending on the specific degree awarded, earning a doctorate can qualify graduates to teach at the university level, or work in a position that requires extensive training and education. Psychologists and medical doctors are two examples of professionals who must hold doctoral degrees in order to become licensed to practice in their field.

Ph.D Doctor of Philosophy

Despite what the name might suggest, this isn’t a degree for philosophers exclusively. A Ph.D is the doctorate-level degree granted in a variety of different disciplines. These are typically research-intensive programs pursued by those who’ve already acquired bachelor’s and master-level credentials in their field of study.

Psy.D. Doctor of Psychology

The Psy.D.is similar to a standard doctorate degree, but granted specifically for students pursuing psychology practice.

What do these letters stand for?

There are two parts; one can classify the educational level of the degree: “B” stands for bachelor’s degree; “M” stands for master’s degree; and “D” stands for doctoral degree. The second part denotes the discipline of the degree, like “S” for science, “A” for arts, or “Ph” for Philosophy.

What are the distinctions between arts and science degrees?

Depending on the school you attend and the kind of courses you take, you could earn an arts degree or a science degree. Typically, an “arts” degree means that you focused on a wide area of learning and discussion, while a “science” degree implies a deep, technical understanding of your subject.

What kinds of designations exist for doctoral students?

​Lorilyn Buhat, MD, MBA (PhD LEADS ’24) is the very definition of a multi-hyphenate. A mother of three, a teacher, a nurse, a midwife, a medical doctor, and a public health servant, Lorilyn—or Latte, as she is known to the people closest to her—embarked on her PhD journey with a few goals in mind: to satisfy her constant desire for learning, to improve her craft, and to serve a deeper and bigger purpose. 

A graduate of UP Manila, Latte entered the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health in 2013 to become a doctor. “What jumpstarted my choice to becoming a doctor? I always wanted to become [one],” she says simply. “But we all know that want does not necessarily convert to will.” It was during her stint as a midwifery student and intern that her conviction to become a doctor grew even stronger.  

“At the time, I was working within the context of public health. I loved it. I was mesmerized by the multitude of things that I can offer, that I can do for the community as a midwife, and I wanted to do more,” she says. “So I figured if I was going to become a doctor, it has to be within the realm and context of public health.”

Latte finished med school in 2018, and following graduation, she took a shot at residency. But the call to serve in public health became even louder; this time, she could no longer ignore or resist it. “I decided to go home, start a family, and do public health once and for all,” she says. “I initially worked as a municipal health officer in Pilar, Capiz, and I eventually transferred to the adjacent town of President Roxas, Capiz and served as the assistant municipal health officer.”

She was in that position from 2019 to 2022, and it was during this time that she found herself surrounded by leaders—all different and distinct from one another. “These were leaders who came in with different phenotypes, with different positions, and they come from diverse political affiliations. And I felt that there was more to leadership that I wanted to understand than just [being with different] leaders,” she says. 

Coming home

It was this that ultimately drew her to pursue her PhD in Leadership Studies. Back in 2013, as she was looking for schools to apply to for medicine, she wasn’t even aware that Ateneo offered programs in public health. This time, as she decided to take on her PhD, she instantly knew where to go. “Why did I choose to return to Ateneo? Actually, it was not a story of returning or choosing the school. It felt more like coming home,” she said.

“I wanted to know how can I better define leadership beyond just saying that it’s good or bad, that it’s effective or defective. Again, I wanted to know more. And at the same time, I wanted to earn my stripes while I still can.”

“What’s amazing about the LEADS program is that by the time that we were concluding our degrees, by the time that we were writing and doing our dissertation, we felt ready. We felt right. Precisely because we were prepared, we were harnessed, and we were mentored from day one. And they equipped us with a skill set, with the attitude and in my case, they equipped me with the vigor—not just to survive PhD but to actually finish strong. And that makes the difference.”

Her dissertation on adaptive leadership, entitled “Adaptive Leadership During Crisis: Experiences of Provincial Government Hospital Managers in the Global South,” was borne out of the desire to give frontliners of the Covid-19 pandemic—of which Latte was one herself—a voice. “The focus of my research was on middle managers because they were the unsung heroes of the frontlines during the COVID-19 era, and I wanted to tell their story,” she says.

No special treatment

In her journey to her PhD, Latte was juggling the demands of pregnancy and her day job. She even reported to class after delivery, surprising her classmates and professors. “I was not very vocal about being pregnant,” she says. “I didn’t want special treatment. I didn’t want them to ask me all the time, Can you do this? Is it okay for you? No. I wanted to play fairly. I wanted equal treatment for everyone.”

But she clarifies: it wasn’t just for compliance, or because she was afraid of the consequences of not coming to class. She reported to class, still, because she was anticipating feedback for her paper, and she didn’t want to miss the opportunity to know how else she can improve her paper.

“And I couldn’t miss that,” she says. 

For her, balancing motherhood, her studies, and her day job on top of it all was difficult, yes, but it wasn’t unpleasant. Instead, she saw it as a challenge she wanted to overcome. It was something that stimulated her mentally, and it taught her how to maximize her time, strengthened her character, and made her more grateful in the end.

“I was a frontliner,” Latte shares. “So whenever I was tired of school, whenever I was tired of schoolwork, I have the opportunity to do PhD pauses or neuron breaks whenever I do my patient rounds in quarantine centers. So I never saw it as a burden. The program and the people inside the program were not just my colleagues; they were not just my professors. They were my breath of fresh air, especially during the pandemic.”

“I entered PhD with eyes wide open,” she adds. “I’ve always been prepared to expect that it was going to get worse. It was going to get harder. I’ve always expected that. My mental state has always been, ‘ Okay, this is hard, but you know what, tomorrow might be harder, so might as well survive today .’ It has never been a case of the PhD becoming a burden for me. It was a case of doing another thing on top of all the things that I was doing. Perhaps it’s just a matter of mindset.” 

The small moments

“One day,” Latte shares, “Fr Ben [Nebres SJ, former University President] came in and taught us about adaptive leadership. He told us, ‘Well, I’ve got news for you. Leadership is painful.’” This was one of the many memorable moments Latte experienced in her time as a PhD student. “How was I going to reconcile that? I was wanting to learn leadership and here he was, Fr Ben telling me that leadership is painful. [What I learned was] you have to find a way to convert that pain into something fruitful, into something beautiful,” Latte says.

Another unforgettable moment in her time in Ateneo was the late Lino Rivera, former Vice President for Mission Integration, extending a helping hand when Latte’s hometown of Capiz was under floodwaters due to a typhoon. “He was my batchmate,” Latte says. “I didn’t even ask for help. But Sir Lino messaged me: ‘Latte, how are you?’ That very moment, I felt like, How come he knows? How come he knows? Then he said, ‘Don’t worry, Latte, help is on the way.’ And I was telling him, Sir Lino, how can I liquidate all of these? I am not so sure how I can tell you to whom I’ve given all these resources . And he said, ‘Well, Latte, your word is enough.’

Those small simple moments, the moments of actually beating the deadline, those moments resonate [with] you. It changes the way you see things. It changes your character,” Latte says.

But the most memorable, and what Latte will be missing the most, are the people. “We had a tribe,” she says. “It’s the people. It’s the tribe. The kind of tribe that you will always go home to. The kind of tribe that accepts you for who you are, the kind of tribe that offers you a safe space. And it’s not very common, especially for post-grad platforms. And it is this kind of tribe that I am graduating with. I am happy and I am blessed that I get to go home, I get to graduate, I get to finish with a kind of tribe that offers me friendship, that offers me confidence, trust.”

Opening doors

Now that she has completed her PhD in Leadership Studies, Latte only has the future to look to. “I’m excited to actually implement the things that I’ve learned,” she says. “I have one more year in [my] residency training program. By next year, I will be graduating and I will be going home to our province and home to public health.”

“I’m looking forward to turning this kind of privilege of education, friendships, and connections into purpose, into platforms which will not only open doors for structures, which will not only open doors for activities but will also open doors for people who are deserving of the same opportunity.”

“I am excited to hold out my hand to those people who are also excited to do what I get to do, who are also looking forward, who are also dreaming or planning to experience what I was able to experience. I guess if there’s one value that Ateneo ingrained in me, it’s the value of gratefulness.” 

“And it is only through passing on the kindness, it is only through passing on the opportunity that you are able to really show the kind of gratefulness that you have in your heart. And I’m excited to do that. I’m excited to open the doors for the next step of leadership.” ​

  • Seizing record amounts of fentanyl at our ports of entry;
  • Revoking the visas of CEOs and government officials outside the U.S. who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully; and
  • Expanding efforts to dismantle human smuggling networks and prosecuting individuals who violate immigration laws.

President Biden believes that securing the border is essential. He also believes in expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and that immigrants who have been in the United States for decades, paying taxes and contributing to their communities, are part of the social fabric of our country. The Day One immigration reform plan that the President sent to Congress reflects both the need for a secure border and protections for the long-term undocumented. While Congress has failed to act on these reforms, the Biden-Harris Administration has worked to strengthen our lawful immigration system. In addition to vigorously defending the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals) policy, the Administration has extended Affordable Care Act coverage to DACA recipients and streamlined, expanded, and instituted new reunification programs so that families can stay together while they complete the immigration process.  Still, there is more that we can do to bring peace of mind and stability to Americans living in mixed-status families as well as young people educated in this country, including Dreamers. That is why today, President Biden announced new actions for people who have been here many years to keep American families together and allow more young people to contribute to our economy.   Keeping American Families Together

  • Today, President Biden is announcing that the Department of Homeland Security will take action to ensure that U.S. citizens with noncitizen spouses and children can keep their families together.
  • This new process will help certain noncitizen spouses and children apply for lawful permanent residence – status that they are already eligible for – without leaving the country.
  • These actions will promote family unity and strengthen our economy, providing a significant benefit to the country and helping U.S. citizens and their noncitizen family members stay together.
  • In order to be eligible, noncitizens must – as of June 17, 2024 – have resided in the United States for 10 or more years and be legally married to a U.S. citizen, while satisfying all applicable legal requirements. On average, those who are eligible for this process have resided in the U.S. for 23 years.
  • Those who are approved after DHS’s case-by-case assessment of their application will be afforded a three-year period to apply for permanent residency. They will be allowed to remain with their families in the United States and be eligible for work authorization for up to three years. This will apply to all married couples who are eligible.  
  • This action will protect approximately half a million spouses of U.S. citizens, and approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under the age of 21 whose parent is married to a U.S. citizen.

Easing the Visa Process for U.S. College Graduates, Including Dreamers

  • President Obama and then-Vice President Biden established the DACA policy to allow young people who were brought here as children to come out of the shadows and contribute to our country in significant ways. Twelve years later, DACA recipients who started as high school and college students are now building successful careers and establishing families of their own.
  • Today’s announcement will allow individuals, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers, who have earned a degree at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education in the United States, and who have received an offer of employment from a U.S. employer in a field related to their degree, to more quickly receive work visas.
  • Recognizing that it is in our national interest to ensure that individuals who are educated in the U.S. are able to use their skills and education to benefit our country, the Administration is taking action to facilitate the employment visa process for those who have graduated from college and have a high-skilled job offer, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers.

As of May 2023, persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations forced 110 million people worldwide to flee their home countries. Of these, more than 1.1 million are seeking asylum in the United States. Jane* is one such individual.

H aving survived kidnapping, assault, and torture by a gang—who partially severed three of Jane’s fingers—Jane* made it to the United States and applied for asylum. Like all asylum seekers, Jane had to apply for asylum within one year of arriving in the U.S. The process involved interviews and court hearings at which Jane had to demonstrate a credible fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or belonging to a particular social group. Detailed testimony about any physical, psychological, or sexual abuse, or threats experienced in Jane’s home country or while journeying to the U.S. is required. The procedure takes a careful medical and psychological evaluation to elicit such traumatic testimony. That is where New York Medical College’s (NYMC) Center for Human Rights (CHR) comes in.

Medical Evaluations Strengthen Asylum Claims

Founded in 2017, CHR is a student-run clinic that provides pro-bono forensic medical and psychological evaluations to asylum seekers, including sex- and labor-trafficked victims, in Westchester County, New York. These evaluations are critical to their applications for asylum or legal protective status in the U.S. Ninety-four percent of asylum seekers’ applications that include a medical evaluation receive approval, compared to 37.5 percent that do not. Yet, human rights organizations, overwhelmed by unprecedented numbers of migrants seeking asylum cannot meet the demand for needed medical evaluations, making CHR’s work more crucial than ever. In January 2019, the U.S. had a backlog of 325,277 asylum cases.

To produce these evaluations and the affidavits that asylum seekers need to present in court, CHR works closely with local human rights organizations, such as My Sister’s Place, Neighbor’s Link, and Physicians for Human Rights. It also relies on a cadre of generous volunteer clinicians—physicians, social workers, nurses, and physician assistants—who conduct the evaluation interviews. But it is NYMC’s student volunteers who drive the organization by overseeing all its efforts, including advocacy and research, to meet the medical and social needs of individuals who have suffered human rights abuses.

“NYMC values and prides itself on cultivating students who can assimilate and process a vast amount of clinical information, and who are also committed to serving individual patients and the good of society,” says Rebecca A. McAteer Martin, M.D., ’08, associate professor of family and community medicine and CHR’s faculty advisor. “A number of students at CHR are immigrants themselves or have come over as asylees, which makes this work particularly meaningful to them.”

Student Volunteers Find Meaning Supporting CHR

One such student is Rahim Hirani, an M.D./Ph.D. candidate and one of CHR’s executive directors. Born and raised in Pakistan, Hirani witnessed family and friends endure the trials of pursuing safety in the U.S. “I have seen how mentally and financially draining seeking asylum can be, so this work feels very personal to me,” Hirani says. “For this reason, I want to make sure that I can contribute whatever I can,” he says.

Hirani partners with co-executive director Kavya Tangella, School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2026, to make sure that the clinic runs smoothly. This entails shepherding attorneys’ requests for client information to CHR’s co-directors of clinical operations, Jacob Fiedler, SOM Class of 2026, and Helen Ng, SOM Class of 2026. Fiedler and Ng pass along these requests to one of CHR’s four case managers, Yael Weitzner, Emily Zhang, Francesca Ricciardi, or Talia Saal, all from the SOM Class of 2026, who then try to find clinician volunteers to conduct the necessary evaluations. Psychiatric evaluations take place remotely, while physical evaluations take place on campus.

Once a case manager identifies an evaluator, they schedule the evaluation, according to when they, the client, clinician, client’s attorney, an interpreter, and two student volunteers can attend. Although only clinicians speak directly with clients, other attendees may quietly observe, while the student volunteers take notes of the interview, transcribe them, write up the evaluation, and draft the affidavit. “Case managers make sure that evaluations contain all the information that an affidavit and immigration judge would need about the trauma that a client has endured, why they should receive asylum, and why returning them to their country would endanger their life,” Hirani explains.

After drafting both the interview notes and affidavit, students send them to the clinician evaluator for comments and corrections. The clinician then has the documents notarized and the case manager delivers them to the client’s attorney. “Without student volunteers, it would be difficult for clinicians to do evaluations because of the time it takes to transcribe them and write the affidavits,” Tangella says.

Need for Clinical Evaluations

The work is time- and labor-intensive, which explains CHR’s shortage of evaluators. In 2021, the organization had only two clinician evaluators. Now it has seven or eight, which is still too few, Hirani says. “We do not have enough evaluators for the number of requests we receive, so unfortunately, we have to turn people away,” he says.

Of the 40 interview requests that CHR received from April through September 2023, 20 were accepted and successfully evaluated. “We are receiving more and more requests but have been able to handle only 50 percent of them because we do not have enough clinicians,” Hirani says. “In the last month alone, we received 11 or 12 requests, which reflects the unprecedented number of refugees in New York City,” he adds.

Dr. Martin, who is a full-time palliative medicine consultant at Westchester Medical Center and faculty advisor for several other on-campus programs, finds time every few months to conduct one asylum interview for CHR. “Each interview takes upwards of three or four hours with a translator,” she says. “The stories themselves are often difficult to hear, and there are times when clients re-experience trauma, so you have to be so careful when you do these interviews,” she says.

Following the interview, she often conducts additional research to support her findings. “Sometimes a judge will say there are discrepancies or gaps in a report, and so I will include evidence in the literature that demonstrates the impact of post-traumatic stress syndrome on memory,” she says. Then, she will edit the final eight to twelve-page report, which includes her diagnostic assessment and treatment recommendations.

All CHR’s volunteers, including clinicians, must complete an online training, which includes an overview of the immigration and asylum systems in the U.S. and a template for interviewing asylum seekers. Even though most evaluations are psychological, any clinician with a health care certification, primary care training or skills in interview-based care can perform them since a template supplies all the questions. “The training consists of a few online modules and takes no more than a couple of hours,” Tangella says. “Clinicians do not need to make a major commitment or have any prior related experience. They can do interviews whenever they have availability, whether that is once every month or once every year. It just takes being interested,” she adds.

Advocacy and Research

Providing medical and psychological evaluations is only part of what CHR does. The organization also has an advocacy team that educates clients about local resources to help them find employment, learn English, or cope with difficult issues like domestic violence. In collaboration with local organizations, community health centers, and clinical care networks, the advocacy team plans community events addressing human rights issues. “We also have a journal club for students as a forum to talk about issues relating to asylum seekers, like gang violence and other topics,” Tangella says. “Having the space to discuss these topics is important for us as future physicians,” she notes.

CHR also has a newly formed research team that is hoping to explore the impact of student-run asylum clinics on clients and students, and effective approaches to treating victims of human rights abuses. The Center also has a recruitment team that tries to engage clinicians by educating them about its mission, work, and the impact they can make.

Dr. Martin, who has dedicated her career to treating suffering patients like Jane, who she interviewed, says that volunteering for CHR is her duty as a physician. “The people who CHR serves are so vulnerable, and medical schools are obligated to consider vulnerable populations, including asylees and human trafficking victims,” she says. “If we as clinicians do not do it, then who does? If we do not advocate for and model this work for students, then who will? It will increasingly become an underserved need. It already is.”

She urges clinicians to give CHR whatever time they can spare. “If you have administrative time, then take one afternoon every three months to do an evaluation. If you are in private practice, then try to block out one afternoon every quarter to provide pro-bono care and get buy-in from your practice that this is valuable work. If every clinician in the U.S. gave half a day a week, a tithe of their time, we would not have a problem with medically underserved populations.”

At the time of this writing, neither Dr. Martin nor CHR know how Jane’s asylum case turned out. “Even though having a medical evaluation increases clients’ chances of being granted asylum by 70 to 80 percent, these cases can take up to 10 years to settle, and we may never know what happens to the individuals,” Tangella says. It is a scary unknown but one that strengthens the resolve of CHR’s volunteers to continue their work. “Whatever field I go into I want to do this work,” Hirani says. “We can actually make a difference in people’s lives while we are in medical school, which is the most meaningful thing we can do,” adds Tangella.

Former President Donald Trump mused that the UFC should start a migrant fight club and train asylum seekers and illegal immigrants to fight because migrants are “tough, mean and nasty.”

During two speeches on Saturday — one before a gathering of Christian conservatives and then later at a rally in Philadelphia — Trump floated that concept while recounting how he brought it to Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White.

“These people are tough. They’re so tough,” Trump said to the conservative Christians at a Faith & Freedom Coalition in Washington, DC.

“I said, ‘Dana I have an idea. Why don’t you set up a migrant league of fighters and have your regular league fighters. And then you have the champion of your league — these are the greatest fighters in the world — fight the champion of the migrants.'”

Audience members were heard laughing as Trump explained his conversation with White about a migrant fight league.

“I think the migrant guy might win, that’s how tough they are. He didn’t like that idea too much, but actually, it’s not the worst idea I’ve had,” Trump quipped. “These people are tough and they’re nasty, mean.”

Trump, 78, has long been a fan of the UFC and has visited several fights during his campaign, including earlier this month in New Jersey, for UFC 302, just after his guilty finding in the hush money case.

White later confirmed to reporters during a presser in Saudi Arabia that Trump conferred with him about the migrant fight club concept.

“I saw everybody going crazy online. But yeah, he did say it,” White later said to reporters, stressing it was “a joke.”

Trump spoke to the crowd for about an hour and a half during the conference located at the Washington Hilton. Later he stumped before a boisterous crowd in Philadelphia and recounted the tale.

“I said, Dana, Dana, I have an idea for you to make a lot of money,” Trump recalled. “You’re going to go and start a new Migrant Fight League. … Only migrants. And then at the end of the year, the champion migrant is going to fight your champion. And I hate to tell you, Dana, I think the migrant might win. That’s how tough they are.”

The 45th president has long billed himself as a hardliner on illegal immigration, and made it a marquee issue during his 2016 bid with his clarion call to “build the wall.”

Recently, Trump has rankled some immigration hawks with his suggestion that foreign students who graduate from American universities and colleges should “get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card.”

In the past, he has called for the US to move more in the direction of a “merit-based” immigration system.

Simultaneously, Trump has taken on a hardline position of deporting all illegal immigrations currently residing within the US.

He has also vexed advocates of a more lenient approach with incendiary rhetoric on illegal immigrants, previously likening them to “vermin”  and warning that they are “ poisoning the blood ” of the country.

Additionally Trump is prepping for a cage-match of his own later this week when he will square off against President Biden for the first presidential debate of the 2024 general election season on Thursday in Atlanta.
