Applying for summer research studentships

A step-by-step guide for students

This resource will guide you through submitting an application for a summer studentship with the University of Calgary. You may only submit one application, and that application will be considered for all awards you are eligible for in the system.

If you wish to download a PDF guide or watch a video, you can also access that on this page.

What are summer studentships?

Summer studentships are opportunities for students to experience research outside of the classroom, pursue research passions and work with UCalgary researchers. Summer studentships take place over the spring/summer. Awards are valued at $3750 for 8 weeks, $5625 for 12 weeks and $7500 for 16 weeks.

What is required to submit an application?

You will need a supervisor who is willing to provide supervision to you over the course of your studentship. Eligible supervisors include:

  • Full-time UCalgary Academic Staff
  • Assistant, associate and full professors (research stream)
  • Assistant, associate and full professors (teaching stream)
  • Clinical faculty appointments
  • Librarians, archivists, curators (who are full-time academic staff)

Professors emeritus with an active UCID UCalgary academic staff who are not full-time can co-supervise but will require an eligible full-time academic staff member to co-supervise and be listed as the primary reference on the application. Eligible co-supervisors include:

  • Sessional or affiliated instructors
  • Postdoctoral fellowship holders
  • Guest Postdoctoral scholars
  • Adjunct professors and instructors
  • Postdoctoral associates

Before you begin

Before you get started, keep in mind you can always start the application and return to edit and complete it later. The system will automatically save your answers as you go through the application.

The University of Calgary is committed to creating an equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible campus. We recognize that to advance equity and inclusion on our campus, we need to understand the demographics of our campus community. The following section aims to understand better equity, diversity, and inclusion (“ EDI ”) in research at the University of Calgary, and to increase equitable and inclusive access to funding opportunities. Purposes for Collection of Self-Identification & Demographic Information

The information collected through this application will be used to evaluate our applicant composition, support EDI in our people practices, support evidence-based decision-making by allowing us to identify patterns and trends in award applications and allocations, and address student barriers that may impede an individual’s success within the University. The data collected will help us measure our progress in building an equitable and inclusive award program and inform our EDI policies, practices, processes, and strategies.

When reporting results for these purposes, all answers will be presented in aggregate form, including for members of equity-deserving groups (women, Indigenous peoples, racialized/visible minorities, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQ2S+). Reports will never be disaggregated in a way that would allow individuals to be identified.

In addition to the above purposes, and subject to your consent, the information collected through this application will also be used to determine your eligibility for funding programs designed with an ameliorative objective and targeted to certain groups, such as the NSERC USRA for Black students or the CIHR REDI Early Career Transition Award for Black students or racialized women students.

If you do not wish your information to be used for the purposes of determining your eligibility for funding programs such as those described above, please select prefer not to answer in response to the questions in this section.

As you complete the Award Eligibility Questions, the system will automatically determine the awards for which you are eligible, based on your responses to the questions in this section. Please answer these questions thoroughly and honestly.

This section of the application is comprised of your research project details and supervisor letter, which you will complete in collaboration with your supervisor. You will be asked to include several details about your proposed research project. Ensure that you are aware of the word count parameters for each section.

This part is crucial as your application is adjudicated based on this section. Please try to be clear and concise.

Do not send your supervisor letter request without providing information about your research project in the Message to Recipient text field. Your supervisor will need to verify and endorse your application so please ensure that this step is completed for you to be eligible for a summer studentship.

Please include details of the following:

  • Period of award sought
  • Title of the proposed research project
  • Overview/abstract of the research project
  • Originality, creativity and significance
  • Potential benefit
  • Relevant experience

You will need to enter the correct e-mail address for your supervisor in the “Recipient Email” text box. This ensures that they receive the details of your research project, can verify it and endorse your application. You can only enter one e-mail address. Your supervisor request cannot be sent to multiple addresses.

Please double check and ensure that you are entering the correct name and email address so that the request goes to your supervisor of choice. Failure to receive endorsement from your supervisor will render you ineligible.

You will receive a notification by e-mail indicating that your supervisor has completed their portion of the application.

In this final section, you will provide consent to share the information in your application with reviewers and program staff and guarantee all answers in Parts B and C were confirmed by your supervisor.

Include an electronic signature and add the correct date.

Your personal information will not be disclosed or used for any other purposes other than as described in the application without your direct consent.

Once you have submitted your application, you can click on the Scholarships tab on the left-hand menu. Now you will be able to see which awards you are eligible for based on the responses in your application. You will see “Applied” in the status column beside any of the awards you are eligible for and “Not Qualified” beside awards you are not eligible for.

2024 SSHRC Insight Grants

Descriptions, opportunity link:, opportunity type:, award amount and duration:, eligibility, subject matter.

Most SSHRC funding is awarded through open competitions. Proposals can involve any disciplines, thematic areas, approaches or subject areas eligible for SSHRC funding. See subject matter eligibility for more information.

Projects whose primary objective is curriculum development, program evaluation, preparation of teaching materials, organization of a conference or workshop, digitization of a collection, or creation of a database are not eligible for funding under this funding opportunity.

An application will be declared ineligible if it is determined 30% or more of the requested budget has been allocated to ineligible expenses.

Applications can be submitted by an individual researcher or a team of researchers (consisting of one applicant and one or more co-applicants and/or collaborators ).

Applicants (except postdoctoral fellows and PhD students) must be affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution that holds institutional eligibility at the time of application and before funding can be released. Researchers who maintain an affiliation with a Canadian postsecondary institution, but whose primary affiliation is with a non-Canadian postsecondary institution, are not eligible for applicant status.

Applicants who have received a SSHRC grant of any type but have failed to submit an achievement report by the deadline specified in their Notice of Award are not eligible to apply for another SSHRC grant until they have submitted the report.

Postdoctoral fellows are eligible to be applicants for this grant. However, for SSHRC to release grant funds, successful applicants must formally establish an affiliation with a Canadian postsecondary institution that meets the requirements for institutional eligibility within five months of the grant start date (i.e., by September 2025 for the current competition), and maintain such an affiliation for the duration of the grant period.

Students enrolled in a program of study are not eligible to apply. However, a PhD candidate is eligible to apply if they:

  • will have met all requirements for the PhD before the grant is awarded, including all course work and successful defence of their dissertation; and
  • establish a formal affiliation with an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution within five months of the grant start date, and maintain such an affiliation for the duration of the grant period.

Eligible PhD students and postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to make inquiries with the Research Grants Office of the eligible institution(s) at which they will be seeking affiliation early in the process .

Federal scientists who are affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution must demonstrate that their proposed research or research-related activity is not related to either the mandate of their employer or the normal duties for which they receive payment from that employer.

If the proposal falls within the mandate of the federal government and the research or research-related activity is performed in government facilities, funding can only be allocated for student salaries, stipends and travel costs.

Institutions

Grant funds can only be administered by an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution . Institutions proposing to administer a grant awarded under this funding opportunity must hold or obtain institutional eligibility .

Institutions must contact [email protected] to begin the institutional eligibility application process, or if they have questions about institutional eligibility.

Insight Grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the Insight Research program .

Insight Grants support research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Funding is available to both emerging scholars and established scholars for research initiatives of two to five years.

Stable support for long-term research initiatives is central to advancing knowledge. It enables scholars to address complex issues about individuals and societies, and to further our collective understanding.

Insight Grants support research proposed by scholars and judged worthy of funding by their peers and/or other experts. Insight Grant research initiatives can be undertaken by an individual researcher or a team of researchers working in collaboration.

Applicants choose from one of two streams, depending on the amount of funding required. Both streams will be adjudicated by the same committees, and will receive the same rigorous level of merit review . The deadlines and application process are identical for both; however, the targeted success rate for Stream A is higher than for Stream B.

SSHRC welcomes applications involving Indigenous research , as well as those involving research-creation .

Joint initiatives

SSHRC collaborates with organizations from across the not-for-profit, private and public sectors to support and promote training, research and connection activities in the social sciences and humanities. SSHRC’s joint initiatives are designed to reflect its strategic objectives and mandate, inform decision-makers, and, in certain cases, address specific needs of its partners.

Learn more about joint initiatives .

For a complete list of available joint initiatives, see SSHRC’s funding search tool .

Future Challenge Areas

SSHRC invites all applicants to review Imagining Canada’s Future ’s 16 future global challenges and to consider addressing one or more of these areas in their research proposal. This is not an evaluation criterion for merit review and does not offer additional or dedicated research funds for this funding opportunity.

Application Process

Applicants must complete the  application form  in accordance with accompanying  instructions . Applications must be submitted electronically by an authorized research grants officer, or equivalent, from the applicant’s institution .

Eligible PhD students and postdoctoral fellows can submit their applications directly to SSHRC.

Applicants needing help while preparing their application should  communicate with SSHRC  well in advance of the application deadline.

Submission Instructions:

  • Complete your application in the SSHRC online system .  When it is complete, verify and submit so that it advances to the Research Services Office. ***PLEASE NOTE: The SSHRC portal redirects the application to the University of Calgary Research Services; pressing "submit" does not submit the application to SSHRC.
  • To initiate internal approvals, complete the pre-award/application record in RMS ( https://research.ucalgary.ca/conduct-research/additional-resources/research-management-system-rms ), and attach a download of your complete and final application from the SSHRC online portal.  Please do not attach drafts, Word documents, etc.  Also attach any other relevant documents, including letters confirming financial or in-kind support if applicable.

Once complete, click "Save and set status", then select "submitted for approvals", and then select "Save and progress" in order to obtain approvals from your department head and/or faculty Associate Dean (Research).

IMPORTANT:  when submitting in RMS, please ensure that you allow time for academic approvals prior to the Research Services review deadline of September 25, 2024 at 12:00pm .

  • Once these approvals are obtained, RMS will automatically forward the application record to Research Services for institutional review and approval.
  • Research Services will review and provide feedback (by email and via RMS), as necessary.
  •  Once the application has undergone review and is in its final state, Research Services will obtain Institutional Approval and submit for adjudication by SSHRC through the  SSHRC online system .
  • As an optional service, Research Services will perform a full detailed administrative review for any applications received by September 17, 2024 at 4:00pm .  The application must be received by RSO on both RMS and the SSHRC portal to initiate review.

In response to what is anticipated to be a busy summer at local pools, the City of Calgary is offering more than 2,800 additional swimming lesson spots at three municipally operated facilities.

But with Calgary’s rapidly growing population and three city-owned aquatic centres closed for maintenance this summer, satisfying public demand could prove to be a difficult task.

In a news release on Tuesday, the city said the 2,800-plus swim lesson spots will be available at the Southland Leisure Centre, Village Square Leisure Centre and Glenmore Aquatic Centre. Registration opens at 6 a.m. on Thursday at calgary.ca/register .

Michelle Tait, the city’s leader of recreation and social programs, said Calgary is finally starting to catch up to a “significant backlog” of swimming lessons created during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new additions will push the city’s summer swim lesson spots up to 13,500 for the season.

Since January, the city has offered more than 36,000 swim lesson spots, compared to 42,500 last year.

However, a factor that could heighten demand for swim lessons in Calgary this summer is maintenance-related closures at three city-operated aquatic centres.

Earlier this year, the city revealed the Canyon Meadows, Bob Bahan and Sir Winston Churchill aquatic centres would be closed for upgrades this summer . The Bob Bahan pool in Forest Lawn closed in early May to undergo urgent electrical repairs and is expected to reopen in August or September. The Canyon Meadows and Sir Winston Churchill pools in Brentwood will each close for repairs on July 1 and will remain shuttered for two to three months, according to the city.

Colin Chubachi, a communications strategist for the city’s recreation and social programs department, called the additional swimming lessons “an example of our resilience in our ability to maximize the programming that Calgarians want,” despite needing to temporarily close aging facilities for maintenance and repairs.

He said Calgary’s number of city-run swimming lessons will soon match pre-pandemic levels, and is expected to reach those levels by next year.

“The temporary closures at Bob Bahan, Canyon Meadows and Sir Winston Churchill did create a net loss in planned swimming lesson availability, but thanks to improving staff levels, these new lessons are an enhancement to current swimming lesson offerings,” he said.

Similar to other Canadian cities last year, Calgary experienced a shortage of lifeguards in 2023, and the city even had to pool resources to make up for the shortfall.

Chubachi acknowledged there is still a shortage of qualified applicants for aquatics positions, which he noted has had a lasting effect on the city’s delivery of recreation programs.

“We continue to hire staff and adjust our service offering to increase service levels aligned with the expectations of Calgarians,” he wrote.

Outdoor pools to open June 15

An alternative option that Calgarians could embrace for their swim lessons this summer is through the city’s eight outdoor swimming pools, which are slated to open on June 15, weather pending.

The Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Association’s (COSPA) executive director Riley Harper said they’re a great summertime amenity for families, as they offer a range of swim lessons and programs, in addition to lane swimming.

“Outdoor pools are a staple in Calgary and we’re incredibly excited to see families come and get to enjoy the weather and the pools,” he said, adding the pools saw roughly 120,000 individual visits in 2023.

“Oftentimes, I think a lot of Calgarians overlook them, but they really are a hidden gem in our city. Each pool is unique and I encourage everyone to check them all out, because they’re all different.”

Admission to Calgary’s outdoor pools is $6 per person, but children aged one and under get free admission.

While two of COSPA’s pools were closed last June for maintenance, Harper said no such closures are scheduled this year, and that the outdoor pools will be available to help fulfil demand for both public swimming and swim lessons. He said COSPA has 8,525 swim lesson openings this year for participants of all ages and skill levels — more than 2,000 spots above 2023 levels.

COSPA also offers training to those interested in becoming certified lifeguards through the Lifesaving Society, he added.

Travelling to Alberta during wildfire concerns

Currently, the wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area are considered, "under control," but travellers to the region should always check wildfire status information in the province before travelling, and while in the area.

Tips for finding the cheapest flights

If flight costs are getting you down, there are a few things Canadian travellers can do to ensure they're getting the best deal possible for their next vacation, both on the Skyscanner platform specifically and when looking for flights more generally.

Beat the crowds: For flights that are filling up fast, you'll want to make sure you're looking at the monthly view on travel search sites like Skyscanner to see the best possible option available for flight dates.

Set up alerts: Prices are always changing, so if you're hoping to travel to a specific destination, or on specific dates, set up a price alert so you can be quick if a deal comes up. Skyscanner specifically has a price alerts system for any cost changes.

Consider "Everywhere": If you're hoping for a new adventure, or a little rest and relaxation, but you don't have a specific destination in mind, the "Everywhere" search on Skyscanner may be your new best friend to discover the most affordable vacation destination possible.

Flexible dates: There may be certain times where you need to travel for specific dates, but the best deals are really revealed when you open yourself up to some flexibility. Even changing your travel dates by a day, or a week, can result in significant savings.
