Checking In Online with Luggage
Checking in online with luggage is straightforward but requires a few additional steps for smooth processing at the airport:

Excess and Oversized Baggage : IndiGo has specific policies regarding overweight and oversized luggage. Passengers can pre-purchase additional baggage allowance during online check-in to save on airport fees. It’s advisable to check baggage weight and dimensions against IndiGo’s guidelines to avoid unexpected charges.
Cost and Process : The pre-purchase option often provides a cost-effective solution for those needing extra baggage space. IndiGo’s website provides a clear breakdown of fees based on route and weight, making it easy for travelers to plan accordingly.
Seat Selection During Online Check-In
IndiGo offers a range of seat selection options during online check-in, enhancing comfort and convenience:
Standard Seat Selection : Passengers can choose from available standard seats at no additional cost. These include aisle, window, and middle seats, depending on availability.
Paid Seats and Extra Legroom : IndiGo also offers paid seats for passengers seeking extra comfort. Premium seats, such as those with extra legroom or those closer to the front, are available at an additional cost.
Preferences and Availability : Passengers looking for a specific type of seat are encouraged to check in early, as seat availability can be limited closer to departure.
Special Cases that Cannot Use Online Check-In
While online check-in is convenient, some passengers may need to check in at the airport counter:
Passengers Requiring Assistance : Travelers needing special assistance (e.g., those requiring wheelchairs) should check in at the airport to ensure all needs are properly addressed.
Unaccompanied Minors : IndiGo has specific policies for unaccompanied minors, who must check in at the airport for safety verification.
Other Restrictions : Passengers with specific visa requirements or those traveling to destinations requiring additional document verification may need to check in physically at the airport.
Tips and Advice for a Smooth Check-In
Here are some helpful tips to streamline your online check-in experience with IndiGo:
Prepare All Necessary Documents : Ensure that you have a valid passport, visa (if applicable), and booking details ready to avoid any last-minute issues.
Check In Early : Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure, so checking in early allows you to secure better seating and avoid potential system downtimes.
Arrive Early for Baggage Drop : If you have checked luggage, plan to arrive at the airport early enough to complete the baggage drop process and avoid last-minute stress.
Double-Check Baggage Policy : IndiGo’s baggage policies are strict, so understanding weight and size limitations can help avoid additional fees.
Common Issues and How to Resolve Them
Here’s a list of common issues passengers may encounter during online check-in, along with solutions:
Technical Difficulties with Website or App : Clear your browser cache, check your internet connection, or try using the IndiGo app. If issues persist, contact customer support.
Error Messages Related to Booking Details : Double-check your PNR number, name, and other details against your booking confirmation to ensure accuracy.
Payment Issues for Premium Seat Selection : Make sure your payment information is correct, and check for sufficient funds in your account. Using an alternate payment method can sometimes resolve issues.
Security Measures : Always use secure networks and only check in through the official IndiGo website or app for privacy protection.

This airline allows female passengers to avoid sitting next to men
Whether due to someone removing their shoes right after boarding or eating a stinky sandwich during mealtime, we've all occasionally wished we had the power to choose our seatmate when we fly. One airline finally gives some customers that option, though for a different reason than the olfactory examples listed above.
IndiGo, a low-cost airline based in India, recently announced a new policy allowing female passengers to choose whether or not to sit next to a man. Under IndiGo's new policy, women can see the gender of passengers who have already selected their seats during check-in by way of a blue or pink marking on the seat map. Men, on the other hand, will not be privy to this information.
The new policy began as a test among IndiGo's female travelers, according to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers. "We brought it up as a test for our female travelers to check in and see where they can sit next to another female traveler," he said in a recent interview with CNBC's "Street Signs Asia."
With inflight sexual assault cases on the rise, it's no surprise that airlines are on the lookout for ways to make women feel safer and more comfortable when they fly.
In April, the FBI released a bulletin to raise awareness on the topic of sexual assault on airplanes in the U.S. "Typically, men are the perpetrators, and women and unaccompanied minors are the victims," it stated. In 2023 alone, the FBI opened 96 cases based on inflight sexual assault, up from 27 sexual misconduct cases aboard aircraft in 2018.
Sexual assault statistics in India also paint a grim picture. Police in India recorded 31,516 rape cases in 2022, a 20% increase from 2021, according to a March story by the Associated Press .
Other forms of transit in India already have policies to protect women from these incidents; for instance, there are several long-distance and commuter trains in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata that have women-only carriages. Some cities have even gone as far as to offer trains and stations staffed only by women.
Despite the obvious need for some type of solution to this growing problem, the announcement has garnered mixed reactions online.
Commenters on the official India subreddit responded to the announcement with varying degrees of excitement. Some were glad for the option but felt disappointed that it had come to this. "Women should be and feel safe regardless of the people sitting next to them," one said.
Another commenter, while understanding the need for such a policy, felt it wasn't addressing the root issue. "I wish we could work on this from grass roots and teach young boys and girls to truly respect each other," they said.
IndiGo is still crunching the numbers on whether it has gained more female travelers since announcing the change, but Elbers did say the feedback from female passengers was overwhelmingly positive. "We do have very positive individual reactions from passengers and people on social media giving their feedback on this initiative," he told "Street Signs Asia."

IndiGo (mostly) hikes seat selection charges, by up to 133%
January 10, 2024 by Ajay 6 Comments
IndiGo raises pricing of most seats on their A320/A321 jets.
IndiGo has rolled out a seat assignment pricing change over the weekend, which has seen the pricing on many seats go up when you pay for the seat assignment, and for a couple of rows, it has also gone down. The changes only impact the A320/A321 fleets of the airline, and the pricing on the ATR fleet is currently not changed.
So, what changed? Here is a sample change to the seat assignment prices for the A320neo, the 186-seat version, which is a significant part of the IndiGo fleet (161 aircraft). I compared the prices with the 2023 price list for reference.
You will note that the front row and the emergency exit rows, sold by IndiGo as their XL seats, are now priced at INR 1500-2000, up from the earlier INR 1200-1500 price band. But the seats in rows 2 & 3 are now cheaper by about INR 50. To sit in the plane’s middle section, you now would be paying between INR 350-400, while it would cost INR 150-250 earlier. And at the back, many seats, except for the middle seats, also got pricier.
The same move is also witnessed on the A321 aircraft.
Here is the seat map of the A321-232 seat version, which IndiGo had 79 of as of the last update from their end.
You can check the new pricing here .
The airline changed the prices of their meals, taking them higher in 2023. Now, there is a higher price on the seat selection as well. The airline made INR 1,551 Crores (USD 186 million) by selling meals and seat assignments (and excess baggage) in just one quarter (July-September 2023). So, seeing how this number moves up from here will be interesting.
The option to automatically assign a seat at check-in continues, but it does not guarantee that a family would be seated together, for instance.
IndiGo has hiked prices on most of the seats they offer on their planes, making it up to 133% higher in percentage terms for selecting a seat when you web check-in for your flight. The changes affect the A320/321 fleet of the airline. Going forward, expect to pay up to INR 2,000 for a seat selection on the front of the plane.
What do you think of the hike in seat selection charges for the airline?

Consistently, india has been ranked as the cheapest place to fly as a passenger anywhere in the world. In that sense there should not be much of an issue if an operator is trying to make more money through other ancillaries. Most people spend exhorbitant amounts on dining and entertainment and don’t cry foul. When it comes to air travel they start penny pinching sort of. Safe and clean air travel services cost money and passengers will have to meet the cost of operations atleast. Airlines which fo not meet cost of operations, die out eventually impacting the economy and travellers
It however doesn’t help for folks travelling with family/kids and want to be seated together . You either need to go to airport really early hoping they assign seats together if available
Didn’t they reduce the fuel surcharge recently? Are they trying to make up for that by increasing the seat selection prices? Also, like Mike said, do not pay for the seat, they will assign one at the counter…. But I am wondering if that is an option anymore with airlines pushing checking in at least 24 hours earlier? they do make you select a seat dont they?
It’s not mandatory to do web checkin. Can a family or group of adults not sit separately for a few hours ? If not then pay for the perk of sitting together. We want airlines to make money instead of going bankrupt due to losses
Soon they will start charging for the arm rest and cushion seats. I only fly 6E on routes where there are no options.
Just don’t pa for the seat. Indigo will assign a seat for free at check in
