Since the academic scope of his chosen field is very limited in India, he is currently applying for a PhD at the National Research Council of Italy. While he is planning to study abroad, he wishes to return to India after completing his doctorate.

After Class 12, he completed a Bachelor of Science degree and then M. Sc. "When I read about quantum computing, I realised that it can help change and address many future problems. Right now, India is importing tech from outside, but I want to see India leading the quantum realm," he says.

He believes quantum computers can aid the fast discovery of vaccines for diseases such as Covid-19 in future. He points out that India's healthcare sector is lacking in terms of technology.

Shivam Chhiroliya

M.tech in artificial intelligence.

The Reliance Foundation Scholarship has been life-changing for me. I am learning new things every day at my institution and I hope to become the best version of myself in academics and develop strong practical skills. Coming from a small village, it is an honour for my whole community that I am amongst the top 76 students.

M.Tech in Computer Science and Automation

Pratyaksha Sinha is currently working at Goldman Sachs’s statistics team.

Sharing her experience of becoming a Reliance Foundation Scholar, she says, “I was very excited to hear that I became a Reliance Foundation Scholar. This was an important achievement for me. Having Reliance Foundation Scholarships on my resume was very helpful during my job interview.”

On using tech for social good, she says, “My idea is to explore the use of what I have learnt in machine learning in all fields. Today, we see everything has gone online - finance, health and education. Almost everyone has a mobile phone now. They use it for watching films, social media etc. I want to help them learn more about tech so they can use it for learning or exploring more. I want to create awareness for tech among such groups”.

For Tushar Kadam, algorithms and programming have always been areas of interest. Tushar wants to use Machine Learning and AI to help develop solutions to real-life problems.

“I like software development and want to find solutions that can be used in real life. It is a great feeling to write codes to solve problems,” says the Reliance Foundation Scholar who is currently working at MasterCard India’s AI garage as a data scientist.

Tushar used the Reliance Foundation Scholarships as an opportunity to explore the vast field of AI. When he heard about the scholarships from his institute, Tushar began his prep right away.

Ask him about his advice to future Reliance Foundation Scholars and he answers, “I would tell future scholars not to think about only the monetary gains, the scholarship is more than that.” In the next 5-10 years, Tushar sees himself as building something which makes a good impact.

Priya Bhatia says the Reliance Foundation Scholarships is a boon for many girls like her who hail from India’s tier-3 cities.

Priya, who is currently working at iNeuron as a data scientist, says, "This scholarship will help more women and girls in tech. I am from a tier-3 city where girls are not encouraged as much to pursue studying technology. If they find a Scholarship like this, it motivates the girls to learn. Even parents who are sometimes not very supportive in such cities may encourage their daughters to take up further studies when they see this scholarship easing their financial burden."

She says AI can revolutionise India's healthcare sector. According to Bhatia, Reliance Foundation Scholarship engagement sessions were very helpful for her. "When we go for placements, the very first thing that is noticed by the recruiters is our personality, communication skills, etc. Personality development is very important, and this Scholarship helped me a lot in that area," she says.

Nitish Gupta, who comes from a small village in Uttar Pradesh, says that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the penetration of technology across India.

While technology has improved education, Nitish feels more can be done to improve healthcare. "Artificial Intelligence can make a huge contribution to the healthcare sector. In future, AI can help in giving prescriptions to patients," he says. Nitish is currently working in the Applied Sciences division in the Alexa team at Amazon.

He says the Reliance Foundation Scholarships have been helpful for him. "I was using a very old laptop and I could barely code. But with the scholarship funds, I got myself a new laptop," he says. "When you have one less thing to worry about, such as finance, you can focus better on studies".

His advice to future scholars is to attend the engagement sessions arranged by Reliance Foundation, especially for soft skills, and interact in those sessions.

  • Commonwealth PhD Scholarships for Indian Students

Written by Ben Taylor

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships offer talented Indian doctoral students the opportunity to complete a funded 12-month placement at a participating UK university. If successful, you’ll receive a tuition fee waiver, travel expenses and a living stipend.

This page will explain how the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship programme works for Indian students, what benefits it offers and how you can apply for funding.

What is the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship India scheme?

The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship India scheme is part of the wider Commonwealth Scholarship programme, administered by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The FCDO funds a number of different PhD scholarship schemes aimed at Commonwealth countries in various stages of development. The one that Indian nationals are eligible for is known as the Commonwealth Split-site Scholarship , which is positioned towards low- and middle-income countries.

These split-site scholarships fund Indian PhD students to complete a one-year study placement at a participating UK university . This placement can be split into two six-month periods.

Your doctoral research will need to be covered by one of the following six development themes, as specified by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC):

  • Access, inclusion and opportunity
  • Promoting global prosperity
  • Science and technology for development
  • Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  • Strengthening health systems and capacity
  • Strengthening resilience and response to crises

For more information on these themes, please visit the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission website.

Who is eligible for an Indian Commonwealth PhD Scholarship?

There are several eligibility requirements you’ll need to satisfy to qualify for an Indian Commonwealth PhD Scholarship. You should be:

  • An Indian citizen (or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country)
  • Permanently resident in India
  • Registered at an Indian university for your PhD by the time the scholarship is due to begin

In terms of the academic requirements, you’re expected to meet one of the following two criteria:

  • A 2.1 undergraduate degree
  • A 2.2 undergraduate degree and a postgrad qualification like a Masters

It’s also important to make sure that your university in India has a connection (either at a departmental or institutional level) with the UK university you want to complete a placement at.

Commonwealth Scholarships are intended to widen participation to UK higher education and help students who wouldn’t otherwise have been able to afford the opportunity. This means you may be asked to demonstrate your financial situation during the application process.

You’ll also need to return home to India when your award has finished.

Can you apply for both a Masters and PhD Commonwealth Scholarship?

No, current PhD students are ineligible for the Commonwealth Masters Scholarship.

How much is an Indian Commonwealth PhD Scholarship worth?

These are the main financial benefits you’ll get from a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship:

  • Air travel to and from India
  • Tuition fee waiver
  • Monthly living stipend worth £1,113 (£1,390 if your university is in London)
  • Warm clothing allowance
  • Study-related travel expenses within the UK

There’s also a family allowance of £485 for your first child if you’re widowed, divorced or a single parent. You can get an additional £120 per month for your second and third children. They’ll need to be under 16 and living at the same address as you in the UK.

How can Indian students apply for a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship?

The first step for Indian doctoral candidates towards getting a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship is to apply for a placement at a UK university that has a part funding arrangement with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC).

Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to apply directly to the CSC, using their online application portal. During the application process, the CSC will assess you on three main criteria.

Your academic merit will be an important factor. The CSC’s selection committee will look at your degree results and transcripts, as well as any prizes you’ve received during your academic career.

The quality of your research proposal will also determine the success of your Commonwealth PhD Scholarship. You’ll need to show that:

  • You have a clear idea of what you want to research and how you want to go about achieving your goals
  • You’ve engaged with your prospective host supervisor in the UK
  • Your research proposal is innovative and related to the CSC’s development themes
  • Your PhD project is relevant to the UK

The selection committee will assess the development impact of your research. You’ll be expected to explain how your project relates to development challenges in India. You should also speak about any previous relevant voluntary work that you’ve done.

Applications for Indian Commonwealth PhD Scholarships usually open in December, with a February deadline. Candidates typically find out in June if their application has been successful.

The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. • Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.

  • Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

  • Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor's degree to date

  • Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)

International Scholarships 2022-23 for Graduate Students in India

In today’s post-pandemic world, students face economic crises at a global level. The biggest dilemma for youngsters in India and abroad is securing employment. That’s why education plays a huge role in a student’s life, as it helps him/her to acquire the necessary employment skills. This is even truer for higher education from international, world-renowned universities and institutions – as students who graduate from such institutions have a higher chance of landing their dream job.

With the cost of education constantly on the rise, it has now become difficult for students to pursue further education without considerable financial burden – especially for those who wish to pursue their higher education abroad. Fortunately, there are many scholarships that graduate students can avail to either completely fund their study abroad experience or supplement it greatly.
