Vanitas no Karte follows Noé Archiviste, a young man who is traveling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris with one goal in mind: to find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and, much to Noé’s surprise, an entirely ordinary human. The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients. But behind his kind demeanor lies something a bit more sinister…

The Case Study of Vanitas Manga  (Japanese: ヴァニタスの手記カルテ, Hepburn: Vanitasu no Karute) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. It has been serialized in Square Enix’s shōnen manga magazine Monthly Gangan Joker since December 2015. In North America, the manga is published in English by Yen Press.

At the end of the 19th century. The capital city of France – Paris – is in turmoil following repeated attacks by vampires. However, the golden rule of their community is not to attack humans! A mysterious evil seems to be eating away at these immortal creatures… It is in this troubled period that Noah arrives in the capital. Born a bloodsucker, he follows the trail of the grimoire de Vanitas, a legendary artifact feared by all vampires. It is said that it allows its holder to interfere with what is most sacred to them: the true name, the very symbol of their life. Altering it can drive them mad, or even destroy them… Onboard the huge floating ship on which he has embarked, Noah meets Amelia. As he helps her recover from a breakdown, everything goes haywire: she loses her mind and reveals her vampire nature to the passengers! That’s when a mysterious assailant enters the scene, introducing himself as… Vanitas! In front of a stunned Noah, he draws the famous grimoire and soothes the young woman’s madness. So the artifact is not just a deadly weapon?

Vanitas is one of the main protagonists of The Case Study Of Vanitas. He presents himself as an “average human being” using the power of the Book of Vanitas to cure vampires of the Blue Moon curse. Vanitas was named after the vampire, Vanitas, from the original Blue Moon tale.

Noé Archivist is a young man who is on board the airship La Baleine accompanied by his cat Murr. He has been living in the forests of Averoigne for many years. He has his first flight in an airship when he helps a young woman, Amelia, who has just fainted because of her anemia.

Jeanne is a female vampire who supports her master Luca, who is her knight, wherever he may go. … She is also known as the executioner of Sire Ruthven, and her legend tells that she alone killed more than a thousand vampires who had joined the humans during the great war.

Lucius ‘Luca’ Oriflamme, better known as Grand Duke Oriflamme, is a young vampire noble and advisor to the queen.

The Case Study of Vanitas: How to Get Started With the Anime & Manga

Before the anime makes its comeback in 2022, here's how to catch up with both versions of The Case Study of Vanitas.

Combining vampires and the grinding Victorian gears of steampunk,  The Case Study of Vanitas is another title in the glamorous subgenre of supernatural and ornate Gothic horror anime. Starting out as a manga published in Square Enix's  Monthly Gangan Joker ,  Vanitas has gone on to spook up an even bigger fanbase with its 2021 anime.

Both the anime and especially the manga are pretty easy to get a hold of. Although the story may star bloodsucking vampires, much more characteristic of the series is its art style and glistening visuals. Before the anime comes back in 2022, here's how to catch up with both versions of The Case Study of Vanitas .

The Plot of The Case Study of Vanitas

The series gets its name from the Book of Vanitas, a tome within the series used to heal vampires as well as its wielder. The two main characters are Vanitas and Noé Archiviste, the former of whom is a human who heals vampires and the latter being a vampire himself. Together, they aim to heal other vampires of their affliction, keeping them from succumbing to their more predatory urges.

Unfortunately, this quest and the power of the Book of Vanitas are despised by the Vampires of the Red Moon, who instead embrace their evil, violent ways. The book also has some ties to the original Vanitas, who was himself a vampire. All the while, another faction exists in the shadows that may be the reason behind the curse of vampirism.

Where to Read the Case Study of Vanitas Manga

The original manga for  The Case Study of Vanitas was created by Jun Mochizuki, beginning its run in  Monthly Gangan Joker in 2015. Running since then, the series has amassed nine collected volumes. With its fantasy horror themes and beautiful shojo-esque art style , the series is somewhat in line with Mochizuki's previous manga work,  Pandora Hearts . Sadly, the series did briefly take a production break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but by November 2020, it was back up and running.

While the franchise has gotten its most mainstream attention from the anime, the manga series has been localized in the West by Yen Press since 2016. In terms of purchasing the volumes digitally or physically, pretty much anywhere that has manga will carry  The Case Study of Vanitas . Amazon , Barnes & Noble , Books-a-Million , Walmart and  Right Stuf Anime allow customers to buy the physical copies in-store or online, while digital versions can be bought and read through Comixology and Kindle.

Where to Watch the Case Study of Vanitas Anime

March 2021 saw the announcement of the then-upcoming anime adaptation of  The Case Study of Vanitas . The series is produced by well-known and illustrious anime studio Bones, who are most known for working on franchises such as  My Hero Academia ,  Fullmetal Alchemist ,  Wolf's Rain and  Space Dandy . The series' first season was split in half , with the first section airing from July until September 2021. The second half begins in the middle of January 2022, meaning it's now just around the corner.

Funimation licensed and dubbed the series outside of Asia, with the Southeast Asian release being handled by Plus Media Networks Asia. The entirety of the series so far can be streamed through both Funimation as well as the Hulu streaming service . Individual episodes and the season as a whole can be purchased for streaming through Amazon Prime Video, but this is the original Japanese version and does not contain English subtitles. It's definitely different from many vampire anime, so those wanting some style in their supernatural stories should sink their teeth into  The Case Study of Vanitas .

There once lived a vampire known as Vanitas, hated by his own kind for being born under a blue full moon, as most arise on the night of a crimson one. The Case Study of Vanitas is a story based in a fictional 19th-century Paris where humans and vampires share the city. The story revolves around Vanitas and his companion, Noe Archiviste. They are on a quest to heal cursed vampires through the Book of Vanitas. It goes into detail about the Vampire born under the Blue Moon. He was isolated because of their fear, and thus, he swore vengeance against the vampires born under the Red Moon. His name was none other than Vanitas. The narrative is a memoir from the eyes of Noe Archiviste. He delves into how he came to meet Vanitas, their journey together, and how it eventually ends.  

While he derives his name from an old vampire and uses his grimoire The Book of Vanitas. One wouldn’t be harshly criticized if they had mistaken Vanitas for a vampire. And that speaks for Vanitas himself, who is a human first and foremost. While he isn’t physically weak, he compensates for his lack of strength with his intelligence and grimoire. A combination of these two allows him to manipulate the actual names of vampires, making him a formidable presence within the series.

Noe Archiviste 

The sole survivor of the Archiviste clan, Noe is the narrator of the series and accompanies Vanitas on his journey of curing Vampires. While one may argue that Noe has been defeated several times within the series. It might be accurate, but his compassion and kindness prevent him from having a severe physical altercation.

Despite being a vampire himself, Noe treats vampires and humans as equally good creatures. It’s this good virtue that pulls him down from time to time. But make no mistake, with his ability to relive memories just by drinking the respective person’s blood. It is safe to say one wouldn’t want to get on his wrong side.

Lucius Oriflamme

He is one of the most powerful and influential characters in The Case Study of Vanitas. Despite his young age, he serves as the Grand Duke to the Vampire Queen herself. He’s an aristocrat through and through.

Despite his childlike demeanor, he’s quite skilled at manipulating others with his strategic ploys and engagement in political scenarios to further his motive and maintain his clan’s position of power. To top it off, he holds Jeanne as his Chevalier.

Prolific, Revered, and the guardian of Lucius Oriflamme, Ruthven is often considered one of the most essential characters in The Case Study of Vanitas. Playing a pivotal role in ending the war between humans and vampires, he now finds himself as a member of the Senate and is well-known amongst humans as well.

He sought peace between humans and vampires during the war, even acting as a peacemaker. Having been betrayed by his students, he no longer shares the same passion and is ready to use any means to seek his desires. Cold, ruthless, and feared by vampire society, with his powers yet to be showcased, he’s just a testament to the man that is Ruthven.

Jean-Jacques Chastel

Chastel is the protector and longtime companion of Chloe d’Apchier and the last surviving member of the d’Apchiers. His loyalty knows no bounds, as he goes on to sign a contract with the devil itself just to realize Chloe’s wish. He turns himself into the very beast the village feared in exchange for his actual name. He wreaks havoc on anyone who tries to hurt Chloe, a symbol of his genuine and sincere feelings towards her.

Despite holding a degree in Chemistry Majors, Archak found himself as a Journalist. His love for anime and choccy milk is unmatched! When not writing, Archak can be found indulging with motorcycles. After all, four wheels move the body but two wheels move the soul!
