But we tested plenty of great paper towels, here are the best paper towels for your cleaning kits and kitchen counters.
Bounty paper towels are the best paper towels we've ever tested.
Bounty makes the best paper towels we’ve ever tested. These redesigned paper towels feature microstructures for increased absorbency. While you can’t see said microstructures just by looking at the paper towels, you can tell they’re present when you’re sopping up liquids and cleaning up messes.
Right off the bat, it impressed us with how easily it could clean up a chunky smear of tomato sauce. We just needed one pass to get it all cleaned up.
Despite feeling soft to the touch, the quilting on this paper towel won’t tear against rough surfaces. It can absorb and hold the second most amount of water of any of the other paper towels we tested.
When we let it dry out after use, it felt almost as strong as an unused sheet of Bounty.
Bounty paper towels tear off cleanly from the roll, so you always have even sheets and aren’t left with awkward strands left behind. While these are the second most expensive of the bunch, Bounty Select-A-Size paper towels are by far worth every penny.
Kirkland Signature paper towels are our best value pick.
The Kirkland Signature paper towels, available at Costco, are an exceptional value—especially if you have a Costco membership.
Each package contains 12 rolls of paper towels with 160, 2-ply sheets per roll, for a total of more than 1,000 feet. The size of the paper towels is also one of the largest we tested, coming in about one inch longer than others in our guide—giving you the most bang for your buck of any paper towel we tested.
The Kirkland Signature paper towels are made of quilted paper that holds about three-quarters of an ounce of water and maintain their structure when used on rough surfaces with only minor tearing.
When reused, Kirkland Signature paper towels uphold their structure very well, however, the paper towels lose a lot of strength and tear more easily after being wet and dried. For reuse, it’s best to use them for light tasks like dusting or wiping up liquids.
You don’t need a Costco membership to purchase these paper towels, but non-members do have to pay a fee on orders that Costco cardholders do not. You can also find listings for Kirkland Signature paper towels on Amazon, but be cautious as these are typically sold by third-party sellers at major markups.
For a paper towel that’s strong, absorbent, and larger than most, Kirkland Signature paper towels are a value-packed choice.
For an eco-friendly choice, check out Papaya's reusable paper towels.
The best reusable paper towels we tested are Papaya’s reusable paper towels, which are made from cellulose and cotton. When dry, the Papaya paper towels are stiff and hard to move around, but once wet, they are flexible and are ideal for cleaning.
Papaya paper towels are able to hold over ten times its weight in water—about 3.5 ounces—head and shoulders above other paper towels in our guide.
These reusable paper towels are strong and won’t tear when you tug on them or rub them against rough surfaces. Compared to the standard paper towels we tested, the Papaya paper towels can be wet and dried over and over again without losing strength. Papaya claims its reusable paper towels have a life span that’s equivalent to using 17 rolls of paper towels.
These are not ideal for dry dusting, as the dry cloth is stiff and hard to move on dry surfaces. Additionally, these paper towels stain easily. While it did an outstanding job at picking up a spill of tomato sauce in one wipe, the sauce stain lingered on the cloth even after rinsing it with dish soap.
If you’re looking to try a more sustainable option, Papaya’s reusable paper towels are a great place to start.
Viva paper towels are total dust magnets.
With a soft, rag-like feel, Viva Signature Cloth paper towels offer stellar absorbency and strength—especially for dust removal. When rubbed over a dusty surface, it picks up an immense amount of dust, more than any other towel we tested.
The paper towels don't tear or pill against a rough carpeted surface when wet, making them ideal for scrubbing. The lack of pilling makes it a superb candidate for cleaning surfaces like windows and mirrors.
Viva Signature paper towels take a couple of passes to fully clean up tomato sauce, while other brands, like our No. 1 pick, clean up faster.
Overall, Viva is a soft and durable paper towel for dusting or cleaning delicate surfaces.
Sparkle's surprising strength impressed us during testing.
Sparkle paper towels are surprisingly strong. The texture is soft and has a waxy-like feel. Despite being thin, Sparkle’s paper towels hold together well even when you give them a hard pull. On rough surfaces, it stood up well and only had one small tear on it after we ran it over carpet.
Where Sparkle is lacking is in absorbency. It struggles to pick up large, chunky spills like tomato sauce and requires going over the spill at least twice to get it fully cleaned up.
It picks up a good amount of dust when used for dry dusting. While this list has better options, Sparkle paper towels do a good job overall.
Overall during testing, we noted that Brawny paper towels lack absorbency. Where Brawny impressed us is with its strength, especially on rough surfaces. When damp, it didn’t tear on rough carpet so it’s a suitable option for those constantly cleaning up kid and pet messes on upholstery.
It took over three passes trying to wipe up a smear of tomato sauce with the paper towel as it didn’t have enough absorbency to soak up all of the liquid. But if you’re often using paper towels to scrub at stains, this is a good option.
Very strong
Doesn't tear on rough surfaces
The Amazon brand Presto paper towels are highly absorbent and can hold the third most amount of water of all the paper towels we tested. These paper towels do a good job of picking up tomato sauce and only needed one pass plus a small wipe to get it cleaned up. Presto paper towels are also good for general cleaning like wiping down countertops and glass surfaces.
However, when wet, Presto paper towels start to fall apart—quickly. They rip easily once damp and totally fall apart when rubbed against a rough surface, like carpets or furniture.
Amazon papers are a convenient choice for Prime members, but we think our best overall pick is a better choice for cleaning and daily use.
Good for light cleaning
Fall apart when wet
Cloud Paper paper towels are made from bamboo rather than the wood of traditional paper towels. Despite having a similar quilted texture to the paper towels, the bamboo paper towels from Cloud Paper are quite slick and feel as though they have a waxy coating on the outside.
Despite the odd texture, these paper towels are still fairly absorbent and can take on about half an ounce of water per sheet. When dry, these bamboo paper towels can dust surfaces well, but it took more than a few passes to clean up larger messes like tomato sauce.
These paper towels are single-use. Once it has been wet and dry once, it loses all of its structure for use and has a tissue paper-like feel.
For an eco-friendly paper towel, we recommend our pick for the best reusable paper towels.
Sustainable material
I grew up in a household where we had our brand loyalty when it came to cleaning products; now I’m on the hunt for the best products so you’re investing in products that really get the job done.
To test each paper towel's absorbency, we measured how much water each towel could hold.
We put each towel through its paces in practical, around-the-house tests that would best reflect the average consumer’s use of the product.
Our first trial was a simple wiping test. We put a teaspoon of tomato sauce on a common kitchen countertop and tried to clean the mess with one swipe of a paper towel. We documented any smudging or smearing, while also taking into account each product’s ease of use.
Next, we swiped each dry towel over a dusty surface to find their cleaning ability without the aid of water or spray.
We also tested the strength of each paper towel in both a dry and wet state. Using just one piece of paper, we attempted to pull it in half while dry and while wet. Next, we rubbed each wet paper towel against the rough surface of a floor rug to test the durability of each towel.
Additionally, we wet each paper towel and then let it air dry to test its ability to be used more than once.
We also paid attention to the smaller, subjective details that make certain paper towels more enjoyable to use than others. This includes ease of tearing (because everyone loathes that piece at the bottom after a jagged tear), texture, softness, and overall ease of use.
We tested each paper towel to see if they can stand up to rough surfaces.
When you're looking for the best paper towels, the first factor to consider is the sticker price, which incorporates the actual dollar amount but also the question of reusability. In our testing, we wet the towels, let them dry, and then used them again. This helped us determine which towels were strong and absorbent and the most durable.
Plus, most paper towels allow for the select-a-size option that can give you bigger and smaller sheets depending on the job you’re tackling. Allowing that flexibility means you’ll use only what you need to prolong the life of your paper towel roll.
Reusable paper towels may be best for your wallet. Packages usually are less than $20 for a pack of 2. Each reusable paper towel is the equivalent of 17 rolls. Meaning for the price of less than one pack of paper towels, reusable paper towels offer the value of six packages.
However, with reusable paper towels, there are some downsides including lingering stains. Many turn to paper towels for their single-use nature, so the thought of reusing a paper towel might be a turn-off for sanitary purposes.
When we're looking for the best paper towel, we consider the thickness of each towel because that often impacts the absorbency.
To test the absorbency, we soaked each paper towel in water and measured how much water weight it could hold to get a sense of each towel’s full potential.

It’s the moment every parent dreads – you’re going about your day when your child mentions that he or she has to do a science project. If you’re one of the lucky ones, your kid will let it slip a few days after it was assigned. But if you’re like most parents, you’ll find out about it the night before it’s due. Either way, we’ve got you covered with a few science fair project ideas to make sure your child scores a top grade (or at least stays out of summer school). Best of all, these science experiments for kids can be completed with common household items you most likely already have on hand.
If you find yourself short on time, testing which paper towel brand is the strongest, makes for a simple yet fun paper towel science project.

I remember as a child being reprimanded by a family friend for using too many paper towels to wipe up a spill. It hurt my feelings, but now as an adult, I understand: Single-use paper towels go fast, and the cost of constantly replacing them adds up. My family had always burned through paper towels, and it turns out it was a very American habit: we use more paper towels than anyone in the world . Aside from the expense, the biggest problems with paper towels are deforestation, wildlife endangerment , and greenhouse gas emissions.
There's a simple solution, though: reusable paper towels, aka "unpaper towels." Not only are they economical and eco-friendly, they're also pretty darn cute. Unlike the white-paper kind ( yawn ), my favorite reusable paper towels come in fun colors and patterns — think fruits, flowers, and geometrics.
They resemble microfiber cloths , but they're made of planet-friendly materials like organic cotton, bamboo, and plant-based cellulose. Reusable paper towels are ultra absorbent can be easily popped in the wash with your regular towels.
Get your hands on these picks starting at just $12.
Marley's Monsters has made a splash on the reusable paper towel scene with its happily hued cotton flannel UNpaper Towels , which have reinforced edges to keep them from fraying. Believe it or not, they actually get more absorbent the more you wash them. One user wrote, "The craftsmanship is stunning."
If you're a fan of more muted hues, Zero Waste Store has reusable paper towels in earth tones, grays, and whites. These are made of 100 percent organic cotton and even come pre-rolled, so you can put them on your paper towel dispenser. When you're ready to replace them, throw them in the compost bin.
FEBU is just one brand that makes a popular kind of reusable paper towels called Swedish dishcloths . They're a staple in Scandinavia and are typically made of plant-based, compostable materials. These are 100 percent cellulose and each towel is built to last up to 50 washes. At $3 a towel, that's a smart investment. One of thousands of five-star reviewers wrote, "These leave the countertop truly clean and not smelling bad. I’ve even washed them in the washing machine and they hold up fine."
I believe in Swedish dishcloths and your hunger for well-designed home products enough to throw another option into my list of favorites: Grove Collaborative's adorable Swedish dishcloths, which makes these reusable paper towels in fun fruit patterns. And these are designed to last — brace yourself — up to 12 months!
"They last a really long time and don't stink," one shopper confirmed. "Easy to throw in the wash or dishwasher when done. A cheerful kitchen addition."
These cotton flannel reusable paper towels come in a sweet sunflower pattern that'll cheer up your kitchen. They're designed to roll right up on your paper towel dispenser, which is cool, but not even the coolest part of these. The company claims they can be used up to 100,000 times!
You be the judge, or take it from this shopper: "When I first received them I thought they were too pretty to use. But they wash up really well and haven’t held any stains! I don’t like using up paper towels and using a larger hand towel seemed a waste. These fill that gap! My paper towel use is way down which was the goal."
If you're a paper towel traditionalist and want to transition into the reusable paper towel life, these by KitchLife are perfect. The bamboo towels come in a roll like the ones you're used to and they're reusable around 20 times before they need to be added to your textile recycling pile . "The quality is great, they can be rinsed out and reused multiple times," a shopper wrote.

Science project, paper towel science project: capillarity.
Yikes! You’ve just spilled water all over the table! Never fear, there are paper towels nearby. As you clean up your mess you notice that water is spreading throughout the paper towel. What is going on here? The water is being absorbed, or soaked up, by the paper towel material through a process called capillary action. Capillary action, also known as capillarity , is the rising or absorption of liquids through small gaps and holes certain materials.
Paper towels are permeable and porous, meaning that they contain small spaces that both liquid and air may pass through. Liquid is able to rise through a property of water called cohesion —that is, water molecules like to stay close to one another (which also helps to explain surface tension). Water also likes to bind to certain other materials through a process called adhesion. In this paper towel science project, we will be testing which type of paper towel contains the highest rate of capillarity (or ability to absorb water into its many small spaces).
Which of your 5 paper towels demonstrates the highest level of absorption or capillary action?
What happened? Did you notice any major differences in terms of absorption levels? If you used a largely quilted, soft paper towel, you may have noticed that it absorbed more than others.
Water wants to be wherever it can be held and kept together through cohesion and adhesion. In this case, the puffier, softer paper towels were able to hold more water because their capillarity was greater. This is due to their larger holes and pockets, which can hold more water than standard paper towels. Ever notice how rough and flat the brown paper towels in your school restrooms are? They’re not very absorbent because they do not have the soft, puffy, quilted texture of other types of paper towels.
Paper towels are a great way to explore capillary action because they show the ways in which water and other liquids can move upwards through a material at different rates and quantities. Feel free to keep investigating! Have any celery in the refrigerator? Celery can also be a great example of capillary action. Mix water and food coloring in a cup. Submerge a freshly cut end of a stalk of celery and watch the color be pulled up through the stalk!

Nobody likes to run out of toilet paper or paper towels, so most of us keep extras around. But where are we storing all these bulky rolls of toilet paper and paper towels? In all the wrong places, as it turns out.
“A big mistake a lot of people make is storing paper goods under the bathroom or kitchen sink when they have other open and available spaces,” Emily Mass, the owner of Spaces by Emily Professional Organizing , says. Her general philosophy is that paper goods should be stored higher up; and more frequently used items like cleaning supplies should hold pride of place below the sink. But to avoid leaning towers of toilet paper, tissue boxes, and paper towels, we asked Mass to pick out her go-to storage options for every organizational need, from people with teeny-tiny living spaces with next to no storage space to those who tend to stockpile.
“Shelves and decorative baskets are my favorite overall way to store both paper towels and toilet paper because you can grab them quickly and load them back up quickly when you buy more,” Mass says. For bathrooms where cabinet space is at a premium, she suggests keeping a round basket like this lidded rattan bin in the bathroom closer to the toilet to fill with extra toilet paper.
For a softer look, linen-wrapped storage pieces are a nice way to bring texture and design elements to a bathroom. This lidded storage unit can hold up to nine mega-size rolls of toilet paper and is available in cream, beige, gray, and black linen.
Another way to store excess stock, if your small bathroom has room for it, is to add a slim cabinet. This inexpensive and streamlined plastic organizer has a tissue dispenser and space on top for additional storage, as well as the added advantage of concealing your extra rolls.
Mass also picked out this smartly designed toilet-paper dispenser that will work in many small bathroom spaces. The minimalist storage piece can hold 12 rolls of toilet paper, which you load from the top and which are dispensed through a window at the base of the organizer.
A tall, soft-sided basket can offer extra flexibility for squeezing toilet-paper or paper-towel storage into odd corners or tight spaces. And instead of trying to hide your paper products in a neutral-colored bin that’s meant to blend in, you could opt instead to keep your TP in something eye-catching, like this whimsical basket.
To take advantage of the often unused space on the backs of doors, Mass suggests this inexpensive hanging shoe holder for storing extra rolls of toilet paper or paper towels.
For many people, the beige or black version of this painted, wall-mounted shelf may work best, but the fun red or mint green ones show that you’re not shy about color or displaying your stash. And at nearly three feet long, this shelf can easily hold enough toilet paper or paper towel to last for weeks.
This wall-mounted curved shelf is designed to hold stacked rolls of toilet paper, creating a cloud-like display of bathroom tissue that is as surprising and delightful as it is clever.
“If you have plenty of space to store bulk paper towels and toilet paper I like to create a section of backstock paper goods,” Mass says. She recommends this utilitarian storage rack for housing a large stash of toilet paper, paper towels, and other household paper goods, and she says it’s especially well-suited for use in a garage or in a storage closet.
Wire shelves are fine for lightweight household paper goods, but if you also want to use a bulk storage space for organizing smaller or more delicate items, like china or holiday decorations, flat, solid shelves are a better choice. This unit from Ikea has click-on brackets, making it easy to customize the height and configuration of the shelves to accommodate tall rolls of paper towels, in addition to rolls of toilet paper and other paper products.
For corralling rolls of either paper towel or toilet paper, Mass picked out an interlocking tower-style organizer. “It’s a great product if you need to store these items visibly on an open shelf to save space.”
Similarly, you can add these clear plastic dividers to a shelf to keep paper products neatly contained.
“There’s a viral paper-towel-storage idea going around where you can add a tension rod vertically to the ceiling from a counter or shelf and store your paper towels in between them,” Mass says, “which I think is one of the most creative storage ideas I’ve seen.”
Adhesive wall-mounted shelves and storage units are especially smart choices for renters who don’t want to risk their security deposit by drilling into the walls. This version has a lid that doubles as a shelf for holding a spare roll.
This simple but stylishly designed toilet-roll holder is the perfect thing for truly tiny bathrooms that don’t have space for even the slimmest storage pieces. It’s wall-mounted, and like the adhesive holder above, the lid can hold a spare roll.
If a lack of space is thwarting your ability to get organized, Mass likes this vertical toilet paper stand for its small footprint. It can hold up to five regular or mega-size rolls of toilet paper.
This gold-tone stainless-steel lidded toilet-roll holder is a discreet way to stash extra TP while adding a bit of flair to your bathroom.
