The DoHSS has a vibrant research community. Ph.D. admissions are carried out twice a year, in January and July. The range of research topics encompasses fields as diverse as Advertising, Agricultural Policy, African/American/English/Indian Literature, Discourse Analysis, ELT, Economics & Econometrics, German Studies, Health Care, Modern Indian History, History of Science, Technology and Medicine, International Relations, Linguistics, Philosophy, Policy Studies, Science, Sociology, Theatre, Film and Media Studies, Technology and Development, and Science and Technology Education.

Research in HSS – the scholars’ perspective

As researchers from the Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences situated within the interstices of a technological institute, there is a constant dialogue between questions of technology with those of society and humanity. We as researchers keenly observe critique and act as an interface between these different paradigms. We believe that as a generation of curious Social Scientists and Liberal Humanists, the need of the hour is to establish consilience among diverse academic spaces. As a department, both the members of faculty and research scholars engage in a broad spectrum of research, which is largely interdisciplinary in nature. Being a part of a technological institute of national repute provides us with immense opportunities to witness and evaluate the interaction, transformation and synthesis that occur between technology, society and humanity.

The department of Humanities and Social Sciences, has scholars who pursue research activities in multiple fields including Language testing, Gandhian philosophy, Migration, Public Finance, Development Studies, Alternative education, Film Studies, Environmental evaluation, Sociopragmatics, Dalit and Minority education, European and Chinese studies, Speech and Communication, Ecocriticism, Deep Ecology, Health Economics, Diaspora and Cultural studies.

The department provides opportunities to scholars to work in areas outside of their specific discipline, thereby opening up avenues for innovative researches of interdisciplinary nature. The specially designed courses help the scholars to pursue their specific interests and decide on their research questions. This facilitates the study to evolve over a period of time and lays a sound foundation for the beginning of research. An evaluation of the scholar’s research progress at regular intervals not only facilitates his/her research but also prepares the scholar to engage with greater focus and rigour.

The scholars of the department have been awarded several reputed fellowships like The Fulbright Fellowship, The Erasmus Mundus Fellowship, The Jenesys Fellowship and have visited various countries, with opportunities to pursue research in world class Universities. The institute provides funds for research activities and extracurricular activities and several scholars have also availed these fellowships to attend international conferences during their program of study. The scholars have also published in reputed national and international journals.

The scholars of the department organize a weekly lecture series which serves as a meeting platform for both the faculty and the scholars. This forum allows scholars to share their research interests and outputs, both with members from within the department and also from other departments in the institute. The presentations are followed by discussions.

As a community the scholars also organize informal talks, film/book reviews, seminars and conferences including an annual theater production in collaboration with the post-graduate students of the department.

Department of Sustainable Engineering (DSE) at TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) provides a competent and vibrant environment to PhD students for achieving academic excellence of highest global standards and the opportunity to nurture an independent, analytical and critical thinking. The mode of operation and key features of the doctoral programme are governed by the provisions as laid down in ‘TERI School of Advanced Studies Ph.D. Regulations-2019'. Admission will be made based on written tests and interview. A weightage of 70% to the written test and 30% to the performance in interview shall be given. Written test will have two papers of equal weightages (35% each). Paper I will be on 'Research Methodology' which will be a common paper for admission in all departments of the University. Paper II will be department/subject specific.

Master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent with at least 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed.

PhD Programme is divided into three stages. These are: Stage I: Ph.D. Course work The PhD course work at TERI SAS is designed to develop rigorous research and analytical skills among the students and enable them with necessary research analytical and methodological skill sets. The Ph.D. Course work is governed by the ‘TERI School of Advanced Studies Ph.D. Regulations-2019’. Ph.D. Course work structure and requirement The credit assigned to the Ph.D. course work shall be a minimum of 8 credits and a maximum of 16 credits. The course requirement will be prescribed by the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) on the recommendations of the Students Research Committee (SRC). The Ph.D. course work must be completed within the first two semesters from the date of registration. Every Ph.D. student must take the following mandatory courses. a) Research Methodology – 3 Credits (Credit only course) b) Research and Publication Ethics - 2 Credits (Credit or audit course) c) Quantitative Research Method – minimum 3 Credits from the list of the applicable quantitative methods courses. Apart from the above, Ph.D. students can take ‘Communication Skills’ as non-mandatory course. Other advanced level courses from the list of courses offered for Master’s Programmes may also be prescribed by SRC after considering the student’s background in relation to the proposed topic of research. The list of available courses in DEE under Quantitative Methods category are • Environmental Statistics (4 credits) • Multivariate Data Analysis (3 credits) • Optimization techniques for energy management and planning (3 credits) • Applied Numerical Methods (3 credits) • Stochastic Modelling (4 credits) • Spatiotemporal Data Analysis (3 credits) Stage II: Research proposal defense and research work • A student will be permitted to appear for defending the research proposal only after he/she has completed the Ph.D. course work as prescribed by the SRC. • As a part of the research proposal defense, a draft research proposal must be prepared by the student in consultation with the Supervisor(s) and duly approved by SRC members. • The Supervisor will schedule the research proposal defense activity before a panel comprising of SRC members and an external expert if supervisor has requested so. • After the satisfactory defense, the student will be required to submit his/her final research proposal and related documents to the DRC with due approval from the Supervisor. The final research proposal must be submitted to the DRC within a period of 24 months from the date of registration in the Ph.D. programme. • During Ph.D. programme, the student shall appear before the SRC at least once in each semester to make a presentation of the progress of his/her work. This process will continue until the thesis submission. Stage III: Thesis submission • Ph.D. scholars may submit his/her thesis at any time if he/ has completed the minimum period of registration and complied with all the necessary requirements as specified in “TERI School of Advanced Studies Ph.D. Regulations-2019” (and subsequent amendments). Prior to the thesis submission, the scholar shall make a presentation in the Department before the DRC. A Ph.D. student must submit his/her thesis within the stipulated period, failing which his/her registration will be considered null and void. PhD scholars are provided opportunities to augment their research skills through involvement in faculty-led research projects as well as explore nuances of teaching post-graduate students through teaching assistantship (particularly in laboratory work). At the culmination of the degree, scholars are fully prepared for autonomous research and scholarship at the vanguard in their chosen fields of energy, urban development, climate science and environment resources as well as have acquired competencies to pursue teaching. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program

With an ever-increasing emphasis on a technology-driven economy, interdisciplinary economic research has become the key to global economic prosperity. IIT Kanpur’s Department of Economic Sciences – the first among all IITs – is a pioneer in economic research, teaching and outreach activities. With its rigorously trained and proficient faculty, the department is fast emerging as a prominent center for India's economic research.

The Ph.D. program in Economic Sciences was introduced at IIT Kanpur in 1974, in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Kanpur. Students in our program do research in various economics areas, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, development economics, health economics, and financial economics. Our department provides intense training both in theoretical economics and in applied and empirical economics. The Ph.D. program is primarily designed for students interested in pursuing a career in teaching and research within academia. It is also useful for students interested in certain positions within governments, research organizations, or private businesses.

Course Structure:

  • Five-years program, with a set of courses and high-quality research opportunities.
  • The first year consists of two-semester coursework, followed by a comprehensive examination.
  • After the first year, students devote most of their time to their own research under the supervision of faculty advisors.

The two-semester Ph. D. coursework will consist of compulsory courses in the following fields:

PhD program

Ph.D. students can avail of generous research fellowships offered by the ISI. Students who will do field work to collect their own data or have other needs for research funds can get funding from the PPRU (Planning and Policy Research Unit), an endowment given to the Economics and Planning Unit by the Planning Commission. A congenial and stimulating environment for research includes the active seminar series , the annual conference on growth and development , (one of the world’s major conferences in development economics, and the largest in India), and the opportunity to interact with internationally established empirical researchers through the International Growth Centre -ISI conferences . There are ample opportunities to go to national and international conferences and present research. Doctoral students typically get funded for one international conference a year, subject to the availability of funding. The presence of a very strong Statistics and Mathematics Unit at the ISI, Delhi, means that Ph.D. students interested in applied work or econometrics have additional intellectual resources to draw upon.

Below are a set of FAQs that we regularly encounter from prospective students.

How do I apply to ISI’s Ph.D. program?

There are two ways of becoming a PhD student at the Economics and Planning Unit, depending on whether you want to avail of a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) from the ISI, or not.

If you want a JRF , you must pass a nation-wide written selection test which has two papers: one in Mathematics (called RE 1) and one in Economics (called RE 2). The exam is typically held in the second week of May of each year. After passing the written selection test, you will be invited for an interview which is held in the first or second week of July. Successful clearing of the interview leads to the award of a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and enrollment in the PhD program. The average intake over the past few years is roughly five students.

If you do not want a JRF fellowship, write to the Chairman of the Research Fellows Advisory Committee (cghate [at] isid.ac.in) with your CV. If you are eligible, you will be interviewed by a committee, and admitted to the PhD program if you pass the interview. Within two years of your admission, you must pass the written Selection Test for JRF’s. Please note that students entering through this route have outstanding academic backgrounds.

How is the program structured?

On entry to the program, based on preliminary research interests, each student is assigned to a faculty advisor. Based on the prior academic record of the entering student, the advisor recommends a sequence of courses for the student to take offered by the faculty. Most students spend their first year, or first three semesters taking a variety of regular and reading courses (mainly in the Economics and Planning Unit, but also in the Stat-Math unit). Strong course work is an essential ingredient in writing a good thesis. These courses are taken for a grade and are rigorous and demanding. After two years, the candidate is promoted to SRF (Senior Research Fellow) assuming successful completion of their second year.

What happens after the second year?

All doctoral students are required to present a 5th semester paper to the faculty. This paper constitutes major work done by the student, whether it is empirical, or theoretical, on a first paper, or first chapter of the student’s thesis. Each annual promotion after the second year (third year and beyond) requires approval from both the RFAC (Research Fellow Advisory Committee) as well as the student’s thesis committee.

How long does it take to finish a Ph.D.?

The median is about 6 years, although many students submit their thesis in 5 and a 1/2 years. This is the same amount of time it takes in top doctoral programs in the US and Europe. Funding is currently provided for the first five years. Under the current rules, students register their Ph.D’s after the first two years.

Can I do my Ph.D. part time?

While nothing in the rules prevent this, our strong recommendation is a no. If you are employed, it is better to take study leave.

Suppose my background is in engineering or physics, or some other field, should I still take the Selection Test?

If you don’t have formal training in economics as part of your education, we strongly encourage you to contact us, or take the Selection Test. We have had several students in the past who have successfully completed our doctoral program (and passed the Selection Test) who didn’t have economics as a first line of study.

If I choose to work, do I have to give up my JRF/SRF Funding?

Yes, under the current rules, you cannot be paid by two sources.

What about hostel accommodation?

This is provided to all Ph.D. students who wish to avail of it.

Why should I do my Ph.D. at the ISI?

Because it is a world-class doctoral program in economics, with top faculty in many fields. We find there is huge value added to our students compared to when they enter. They are able to think on their feet when they are done, and become outstanding faculty members in other universities.

The Economics and Finance Department since its inception is well renowned for its emphasis on rigorous scholarship and real world relevance. Faculty, apart from teaching and pursuing research, also contribute in consultancy and training manpower to industry as well as the Government. The Department has been alert and alive to the changes in the macro- environment, and has been constantly updating the curriculum.

Department plans to admit student under

a. Full Time students: students who will devote full-time on Ph D work.

b. Part-time Students(Applicable only if the Department has consented): Candidates working in organizations situated close to the campus will be admitted under this scheme. Students will have to complete required course work similar to full-time students as specified by DRC.  They will not be entitled for any assistantship from the Institute.

  • Higher degree with 60% marks /6.0 CGPA with First Division in Economics/ Finance/ Engineering/ Management with relevant experience in economics and finance areas.
  • INR 28,000 or 31,000 per month as per the intake qualification.
  • All full time students have to undertake 8-10 hrs of TA work as assigned by the institute. Two-semester course work for candidates with M.Sc. Qualification

PhD in Economics

The department offers a PhD program in seven academic disciplines (Economics, Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, Policy, Psychology, and Sociology). The PhD program consists of both full time and part-time students.

Who can apply?

Eligibility: M.A./M.Sc (2 years)/M.Com/M.B.A/M.Phil or B.Tech/BE/B.Sc Engg. (4 years) or M.Tech/ME/MS Research (2-3 years)/M.D/ D.M./M.S/M.DS

Minimum qualifications: 60% marks or 6.00 CGPA on a 10-point scale and qualified GATE/ CSIR/ UGC-NET or JRF/ICAR/ICMR/ DST - INSPIRE Fellowship (check the prospectus of the current admission cycle for details about the exemptions and clarifications.)

The MPhil/PhD in Environmental Economics programme offers the chance to undertake a substantial piece of research which makes an original contribution to the field of environmental economics and is worthy of publication.

Students are first registered on the MPhil, and will need to meet certain requirements to be upgraded to PhD student status. The programme culminates with an examination/viva in which your work is scrutinised by two experts in the area of research in which you have specialised.

Over the last two decades, the tools of economic analysis have become indispensable in analysing environmental problems and providing the basis for developing sustainable policy solutions. With rising employment opportunities in this field, student demand has also grown for doctoral courses offering rigorous, state-of-the-art training in environmental, natural resource and climate change economics. The MPhil/PhD Programme in Environmental Economics responds to this increased demand and builds on growing research at LSE in environmental, resource and climate change economics, and other related subjects. In particular, the Department of Geography and Environment currently has the largest group of full-time academic environmental economists in any UK university, and one of the largest internationally. Importantly, the Department enjoys close links with the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the ESRC Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy.

The MPhil/PhD Environmental Economics aims to:

  • provide advanced knowledge of the principles and conceptual foundations of environmental economics
  • equip you with the analytical tools and methodological understanding needed to develop original research in the field
  • expose you to the most recent developments and debates in environmental and natural resource economics
  • prepare you for careers in research and academia, international organisations, the private/consultancy sector, NGOs, or governmental institutions.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements for mphil/phd environmental economics.

The minimum entry requirement for this programme is a taught master’s degree (or equivalent), with a minimum of 65 per cent average and at least 70 in dissertation, in a related discipline.

Competition for places at the School is high. This means that even if you meet our minimum entry requirement, this does not guarantee you an offer of admission.

The programme is offered in the following alternative formats:

Either  the stand-alone  MPhil/PhD in Environmental Economics  (+3 route)

Or  Combined with the MSc in Environmental Economics and Climate Change progressing onto the MPhil/PhD in Environmental Economics (1+3 route)

+ 3 Route: MPhil/PhD in Environmental Economics (2-4 years)

The minimum entry requirement for this programme is a taught master’s degree (or equivalent), with a minimum of 65 per cent average and at least 70 in dissertation, in a related discipline.  

1+3 Route:  MSc in Environmental Economics and Climate   Change (1 year) + MPhil/PhD in Environmental Economics (2-4 years) 

The 1+3 route – suitable if you do not hold a relevant postgraduate degree – is aimed at students graduating with an undergraduate degree preferably in economics, or otherwise with a background in economic analysis and strong analytical, quantitative and technical skills. The 1+3 Combined PhD Programme is only available as part of an ESRC Funded pathway. The 1+3 scheme provides funding for a one year research training master's linked to a PhD programme and is designed for students who have not already completed an ESRC recognised programme of research training. The ESRC 1+3 scholarship covers the master’s and the PhD programme and so takes up to 5 years in total.

Progression from the master’s onto the PhD programme is dependent upon performance in the master’s programme (Students must score 65% overall and at least 70 in their dissertation to comply with the department’s usual PhD entry criteria).

To apply for the 1+3 route, an application must be submitted for the relevant master’s programme, including a research proposal for the PhD aspect of the pathway. Fees and funding

Every research student is charged a fee in line with the fee structure for their programme. The fee covers registration and examination fees payable to the School, lectures, classes and individual supervision, lectures given at other colleges under intercollegiate arrangements and, under current arrangements, membership of the Students' Union. It does not cover  living costs  or travel or fieldwork.

Tuition fees 2024/25 for MPhil/PhD Environmental Economics

Home students: £4,829 for the first year (provisional) Overseas students: £22,632 for the first year

The fee is likely to rise over subsequent years of the programme. The School charges home research students in line with the level of fee that the Research Councils recommend. The fees for overseas students are likely to rise in line with the assumed percentage increase in pay costs (ie, 4 per cent per annum).

The School recognises that the  cost of living in London  may be higher than in your home town or country, and we provide generous scholarships each year to home and overseas students.

This programme is eligible for  LSE PhD Studentships , and  Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding . Selection for the PhD Studentships and ESRC funding is based on receipt of an application for a place – including all ancillary documents, before the funding deadline.

Microeconomics Develops the basic tools for analysing problems of resource allocation used by economists working in research, government and business. 

Introductory Course in Mathematics and Statistics Provides students with the essential mathematical, statistical, economic and econometric background for the core Economics courses of these programmes.

Students who have previously taken this course, or an equivalent course at another institution, may ask for the requirement to take Microeconomics and Introductory Course in Mathematics and Statistics to be waived. Environmental and Resource Economics This course seeks to develop a rigorous treatment of the theory of environmental and natural resource economics, and to show how formal economic thinking can assist real world policymaking in areas such as climate change, ecosystem & biodiversity conservation and water resource management. Advanced research methods course(s) to the value of one unit from a range of options

Please note that changes to programmes and courses can sometimes occur after you have accepted your offer of a place. These changes are normally made in light of developments in the discipline or path-breaking research, or on the basis of student feedback. Changes can take the form of altered course content, teaching formats or assessment modes. Any such changes are intended to enhance the student learning experience. You should visit the School’s  Calendar ,  or contact the relevant academic department, for information on the availability and/or content of courses and programmes of study. Certain substantive changes will be listed on the  updated graduate course and programme information  page.

Supervision, progression and assessment

Supervision.

You will either be allocated a principal supervisor and a review supervisor, or two joint supervisors. One or both will be specialist in your chosen research field, though not necessarily in your topic. The Department encourages – whenever possible – joint-supervision arrangements. However, please confirm your supervisory arrangements during your first meeting with your supervisor(s).

Joint supervisors will have a joint leading role throughout your studies, and you will be able to meet them separately or jointly. Students with a main and a review supervisor should be aware that the main supervisor will have a leading supervisory role during the doctoral studies, whereas the review supervisor will be involved less frequently, being primarily responsible for progress monitoring and participating in review and upgrading decisions (see below). However, please keep your review supervisor abreast of your progress throughout the year and discuss with him/her any matters arising as soon as possible.

Progression and assessment

Once on the MPhil/PhD programme you will go through a First Year Progress Review taking place in the Spring Term of your first research year. This is Year 1 for students in the +3 programme and Year 2 for students in the 1+3 programme. For the First Year Progress Review, you must submit a written progress report containing an extensive and updated research proposal (typically including an introduction to the topic and motivation for the research; aims and objectives/research questions; contribution to knowledge; summary of methods to be used; and outline of the work to be done) and either a comprehensive literature review or a substantive draft of a chapter/paper as evidence of progress made during the year. Normally, there will be a progress review meeting between you and the supervisors to discuss the written material presented. The work has to reach an acceptable standard to enable you to progress. There is provision for a second Supplementary Review in cases where there are doubts as to whether progress has been sufficient to allow entry to the second year (third year of the 1+3 programme). Progression to the second year (third year of the 1+3 programme) is also dependent on you having passed all required examinations and obtained at least one merit, and having presented your work satisfactorily in the doctoral presentation workshops.

All research students are initially registered for an MPhil and have to be upgraded to PhD status. The upgrade from MPhil to PhD usually occurs during the second year of full-time registration. This is Year 2 for students in the +3 programme and Year 3 for students in the 1+3 route. The exact timing depends on your progress. You are required to submit a formal written upgrade report consisting of an extensive revised research proposal, two substantive draft papers/chapters, of which one can be a literature review, and a detailed plan for completion. You will be asked to discuss your research paper/thesis outline during an Upgrade Meeting in front of an Upgrading Committee normally formed by your main supervisor, your review supervisor and a third member of staff with relevant expertise. The material is evaluated by the Upgrading Committee, who will recommend transferral to PhD registration if your work is judged to be of sufficient quality and quantity. The upgrade is also dependent on you having completed all required training courses and having made a satisfactory research presentation in your doctoral presentation workshop.

In addition to these formal arrangements, each year during the Spring Term and throughout the course of your studies, you and your supervisors have to complete a yearly Progress Report Form, detailing progress made, problems arising and plan/timeline for completion. The forms are sent to the relevant Doctoral Programme Director for approval before you are able to re-register for the following session.  If perceived lack of progress is identified, it can trigger a more formal annual review of progress in which you will be asked to produce specific written documents to be evaluated by a review panel.

Language Centre  – the Centre specialises in offering language courses targeted to the needs of students and practitioners in the social sciences. We offer pre-course English for Academic Purposes programmes; English language support during your studies; modern language courses in nine languages; proofreading, translation and document authentication; and language learning community activities.

LSE Library   –   founded in 1896, the British Library of Political and Economic Science is the major international library of the social sciences. It stays open late, has lots of excellent resources and is a great place to study. As an LSE student, you’ll have access to a number of other academic libraries in Greater London and nationwide. 

LSE LIFE  – this is where you should go to develop skills you’ll use as a student and beyond. The centre runs talks and workshops on skills you’ll find useful in the classroom; offers one-to-one sessions with study advisers who can help you with reading, making notes, writing, research and exam revision; and provides drop-in sessions for academic and personal support. The Ashoka approach to Economics is fundamentally about bringing together cutting edge economic theory and rigorous data analysis to address questions at the frontiers of research. Our faculty members are engaged in active research in applied microeconomic theory, game theory, decision theory, development economics, labour economics, health economics, public economics, political economy, behavioural economics, experimental economics, economics of discrimination, macroeconomic theory, empirical macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international finance.

Programme Requirements

The first two years are primarily focused on coursework and developing a research plan. From the third year onwards, PhD candidates will present their work at seminars, and write up their research in the form of research papers that together form a draft PhD dissertation.

In the first year, students will focus on building a strong foundation. In the first year, students must take six courses: a year-long sequence of each of the three core courses: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics/Econometrics.

In order to meet the requirements for the PhD, students must maintain a minimum grade of B or 3.0/4.0 in these courses.

A first-year course requirement may be waived in specific circumstances, usually subject to passing a qualifying exam in a given subject, and with the permission of the PhD coordinator(s). However, students must ensure they take at least 6 courses in their first year by taking elective courses or PhD reading courses in lieu of any first-year core courses for which they get a waiver.

Appointment of faculty mentor(s)

Up to two faculty mentors will be appointed by the PhD Coordinator(s) of each individual department while taking into account (a) match between supervisor’s (and co-supervisor’s) specialization and area of proposed research, (b) student preference(s), and (c) number of students being supervised by individual faculty members. The mentors’ key role is to encourage and assist the students to find a faculty advisor, and to help the students navigate through the program requirements.

In the second year, students will develop their research interests by taking a total of three elective courses in their second year (across the monsoon and spring semesters). In order to meet the requirements for the PhD, students must maintain a minimum grade of B or 3.0/4.0 in these courses. In case students have already taken elective courses in their first year in lieu of core courses for which they have received waivers, they can take more elective courses in their second year, but they will not be required to take any more than 6 elective courses across both years. 

The list of elective courses offered in any semester will be announced closer to the date. Amongst others, students can expect elective courses in the following areas: Advanced Game Theory, Advanced Macroeconomics, Behavioral Economics, Decision Theory, Development Economics, Economic and Social Networks, Experimental Economics, Health Economics, History of Economic Thought, Industrial Organization, International Economics, Public Economics, Political Economy, Time Series Analysis.

Students already holding an MPhil degree prior to admission at Ashoka University may apply to have the elective course requirements waived, and move directly to submitting a research plan.

Finding an Advisor

Students are strongly encouraged to find a potential advisor(s) within 1.5 years into the program, that is, after their third semester. This will ensure that the students have adequate guidance while writing the proposal for candidacy and will be able to submit it on time. The PhD mentors assigned to the students will facilitate them in finding the advisors.

Admission to Candidacy

To attain candidacy, students must submit a research proposal working towards the final dissertation. The deadline for the proposal is the beginning of their third year, that is, after the second year summer before the start of the Monsoon semester. The proposal should include a well developed research plan. The details of the proposal will be determined by the respective advisor and the Student Research Committee.

Students will then be called upon to orally defend their research plan before their Student Research Committee (SRC), specifically constituted for each PhD student. The Student Research Committee will be appointed by the Program Coordinator of the Department before the student plans to defend their Research Plan. It will be chaired by the student’s faculty advisor (must be a permanent faculty (tenured or non-tenured) of the Economics department at Ashoka University) and will include as members: (a) co-advisor, if any, and (b) at least one permanent faculty member (tenured or non-tenured) from Ashoka University Economics Department, and at least one external committee member who is from outside the department (may be from any other department within the university or outside the university) who specializes in a related area. Post candidacy, students can change the composition of the Student Research Committee after getting approval from the PhD coordinators and the Research office.

Students may apply to be formally admitted to PhD candidate status once they have completed their coursework requirements and successfully defended a research plan.

The university requires that an incoming PhD student holding a MPhil/MTech degree need to fulfill the candidacy requirements within 1.5 years.

Presentations

After candidacy, students are expected to present at least once every year in the Graduate Event which is annually organized by the Economics Department. Besides presenting at Ashoka, students are encouraged to present their research in seminars or conferences outside the university.

Research Committee review

Students who have been admitted to PhD candidate status must meet with their Student Research Committee (SRC) to review their progress once a year.

PhD Grad Event

The department, every year, will organize a PhD grad event which will consist of student presentations and faculty panels.

  • Student Presentations: The upper year PhD students who have been admitted to candidacy will present their work. The content of the presentation will be mutually decided by the student and the faculty advisor.
  • Faculty Panels: Besides student presentations, there will be faculty panels to guide the PhD students. This will provide the PhD students an opportunity to interact with faculty, exchange ideas, and in general prepare them to become a professional economist.

Dissertation defence

Once admitted to candidacy, students will write up their research in the form of research papers, which together form a draft PhD dissertation. Students will be required to subject the draft dissertation to a check for plagiarism using standard software.

Students will submit the dissertation to his/her SRC for its internal assessment. With the approval of the SRC, the dissertation will be submitted to at least two external examiners and to the Faculty supervisor(s) for their formal assessment and recommendation. On the independent recommendation of each external examiner, supervisor and co-supervisor, the SRC will formally conduct a viva voce examination in the presence of at least one, but preferably both, external examiners. The examination will be open to all faculty members and students from Ashoka University.

After the viva voce, a copy of the dissertation is deposited with the INFLIBNET, and with Ashoka University Library.

Eligibility for Full time or Part time Ph.D. Program :

(i) M.A/M.Sc or M.Phil Degree in Economics, Finance from UGC/AICTE/approved institutions including institutions of national and state importance.

(ii) At least 55% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade to percentage) at Master’s degree; A relaxation of 5% of marks (i.e., 55% to 50%, or equivalent grade) may be allowed for SC/ST/MBC/OBC/Differently-Abled candidates.

(iii) Applicants with valid qualifying tests scores in any one of the following tests is preferred:

UGC-JRF; UGC-NET; GATE-Economics; State level SET in Economics; Any other test approved by Nation Testing Agency for PhD admissions in Economics to an Indian University/Institution.

(iv)   Those who do not have any of these test scores should write entrance test conducted by MSE a day before the interview.

(v)  Part-time candidate should provide employment letter and no objection letter from the employer when the selection results of the candidates are announced. The format for NOC shall be shared by MSE at the time of announcement of the results.

Research Areas : Preference will be given to candidates interested in research areas of Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Public Economics, Macro, Industrial Organization, International Trade, Corporate Finance, Financial Markets, Behavioural Finance, Asset Pricing.

Research Fellowship :  Meritorious candidates (excluding those with UGC JRF) in the Economics program may be considered for Dr. Devaki Muthiah & Dr. A.C. Muthiah Research Scholarship and MSE Institutional fellowship for a period of three years (extendable to maximum of one more year based on performance) from the date of joining.

How to Apply: Eligible candidates can submit an online application form with basic details and upload a few supporting documents in digital form. The list of documents is given in the application form.

Admission Procedures:

(i) The applicants will submit an online application form with basic details and upload a few supporting documents in digital (scanned) form which should be attested either by a gazetted officer or a notary public. The list of documents is in the application form.

(ii)  On that basis, only shortlisted applicants will be called for the admission test.

(iii) The candidate shall be considered eligible for shortlisting if they have (a) minimum of 55% (50% for SC/ST) in the last qualifying degree and (b) who have entrance exam score from any of these JRF/NET/SET/GATE/CAT/any NTA conducted PhD entrance test score. In the absence of a national/state level entrance test score the candidate shall appear for a written test conducted at MSE. The shortlisted candidates based on ranking in (b) shall appear for an interview and the final ranking will be on the interview scores with a minimum of 50%.

Note: Decision of the selection committee will be final and candidates will be selected as per supervisor availability in the area of their research interest. All supporting documents will be verified with the originals at the time of joining and in case of is any discrepancy, the admission shall be cancelled.

Written Test and Interview Procedure:

(i) The written test for those applicants without any prior test score will be for a maximum duration of 45 minutes and candidates must answer two questions of 15 marks each.

(ii) Candidates will have to answer one question from Section A and one question from Section B. There will be four questions in each section to choose from.

(iii) Section A on Quantitative Methods will include topics in Mathematical Methods, Operations Research, Statistics and Econometrics. Section B on Economics will include topics listed in the UGC-NET syllabus with emphasis on Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and topics on Indian Economy.

(iv) The personal interview will cover topics listed in the written test and also on the research interest mentioned in the statement of purpose.

(v) Personal interview will be conducted by a panel of faculty from MSE. The interview will online for all candidates  except  for those candidates who will appear for the written test at MSE and hence will have in person interview.

The Ph.D. programme is designed to create academic researchers as well as professionals who are capable of conducting policy analysis, relating to national and global economic and development issues, from a quantitative and inter-disciplinary perspective. While an interdisciplinary approach is encouraged, the programme lays somewhat larger emphasis on economics to provide an integrated framework within which various development issues can be addressed. Ph.D. students are expected to submit their dissertations within four years of joining the Institute. Ph.D. programmes involve successful completion of course work as well as submission of dissertation. M.Sc., stream students who would like to register for a Ph.D. degree need to pass the oral comprehensive examination in the form of proposal cum evaluation seminar and fulfil prescribed course and minimum grade requirements.

Admission Eligibility

Minimum qualification for admission to the Ph.D. programme include one of the following degrees or their equivalents :

M.A./M.Sc. in Economics/M.Stat./M.Sc. (Physics or Mathematics or Environmental Science or Operations Research)/M.B.A./M.Tech./M.E./B.Tech./B.E. with at least 55% aggregate marks for Economics discipline and 60% aggregate marks for other disciplines. The applicant must have studied mathematics at the higher secondary or higher level.

Course Structure and Duration

Ph.D. students are required to take fourteen courses (four compulsory and ten optional), which they are expected to complete in two years, students are required to take the course on Research Methodology and the course on Seminar Series.

The compulsory courses for Ph.D. students are Microeconomics-I, Macroeconomics-I,Econometrics-I, Energy and Environment-I.Ph.D. students have to choose their optional courses such that they include (i) any two courses from Microeconomics – II, Macroeconomics – II, Econometrics – II and Energy and Environment – II, (ii) one Major Field of Specialisation consisting of four optional courses in a related field, (iii) one Minor Field of Specialisation consisting of two optional courses in a related field, and (iv) two other optional courses that may be from un-related fields. The optional courses /fields of specialisation offered by the Institute are similar to those listed under the M.Sc. programme.

For continuation in the Ph.D. programme, the student has to pass an Oral Comprehensive Examination in the form of a Proposal cum Evaluation Seminar and is expected to write a Ph.D. dissertation within the stipulated time frame and fulfil prescribed course and minimum grade requirements.

Ph.D. students need to pay a tuition fee of Rs.16,000/- per semester and a hostel fee, which is 8% of their fellowship amount per month, plus water and electricity charges as per actual. The tuition fee may be revised from time to time.

Financial Assistance

Ph.D. students will receive a monthly stipend of Rs.31,000/- in the first two years. Those students, who fulfill the terms and conditions for Ph.D. registration, will receive a monthly stipend of Rs.43,750/- after Ph. D. registration in the third year. Students are required to provide part time research or teaching assistantship from their second year onwards.

In the past, Ph.D students from IGIDR have been placed in the corporate sector – a selected list of companies is provided in the section on past recruiters. Some of our students pursue their doctorates, either at IGIDR or abroad. In the last five years, our students have got admission with financial support from renowned universities abroad like Iowa State University, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and University of California, Irvine.

The PhD programmes in Environmental Economics and Environmental Management offer interdisciplinary research across economic and ecological sciences, concentrated in the following key areas:

The PhD requires a dissertation of up to 80,000 words, to be submitted by full-time students after a period of three years' study (or six years for part-time students), with a further maximum of one year allowable for writing up.

A student will be working on their own research project, working closely with their academic supervisor and with the support of other postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff in their research group.

There is a correlation between a country's educational system quality and its economic status, with developed nations offering higher quality education.

The U.S., despite ranking high in educational system surveys, falls behind in math and science scores compared to many other countries.

Educational system adequacy varies globally, with some countries struggling due to internal conflicts, economic challenges, or underfunded programs.

While education levels vary from country to country, there is a clear correlation between the quality of a country's educational system and its general economic status and overall well-being. In general, developing nations tend to offer their citizens a higher quality of education than the least developed nations do, and fully developed nations offer the best quality of education of all. Education is clearly a vital contributor to any country's overall health.

According to the Global Partnership for Education , education is considered to be a human right and plays a crucial role in human, social, and economic development . Education promotes gender equality, fosters peace, and increases a person's chances of having more and better life and career opportunities.

The annual Best Countries Report , conducted by US News and World Report, BAV Group, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania , reserves an entire section for education. The report surveys thousands of people across 78 countries, then ranks those countries based upon the survey's responses. The education portion of the survey compiles scores from three equally-weighted attributes: a well-developed public education system, would consider attending university there, and provides top-quality education. As of 2023, the top ten countries based on education rankings are:

Countries with the Best Educational Systems - 2021 Best Countries Report*

Ironically, despite the United States having the best-surveyed education system on the globe, U.S students consistently score lower in math and science than students from many other countries. According to a Business Insider report in 2018, the U.S. ranked 38th in math scores and 24th in science. Discussions about why the United States' education rankings have fallen by international standards over the past three decades frequently point out that government spending on education has failed to keep up with inflation.

It's also worthwhile to note that while the Best Countries study is certainly respectable, other studies use different methodologies or emphasize different criteria, which often leads to different results. For example, the Global Citizens for Human Rights' annual study measures ten levels of education from early childhood enrollment rates to adult literacy. Its final 2020 rankings look a bit different:

Education Rates of Children Around the World

Most findings and ranking regarding education worldwide involve adult literacy rates and levels of education completed. However, some studies look at current students and their abilities in different subjects.

One of the most-reviewed studies regarding education around the world involved 470,000 fifteen-year-old students. Each student was administered tests in math, science, and reading similar to the SAT or ACT exams (standardized tests used for college admissions in the U.S.) These exam scores were later compiled to determine each country's average score for each of the three subjects. Based on this study, China received the highest scores , followed by Korea, Finland , Hong Kong , Singapore , Canada , New Zealand , Japan , Australia and the Netherlands .

On the down side, there are many nations whose educational systems are considered inadequate. This could be due to internal conflict, economic problems, or underfunded programs. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's Education for All Global Monitoring Report ranks the following countries as having the world's worst educational systems:
