Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science is created to provide the knowledge and abilities required for data science research and discovery. The programme also offers substantial applied training that is aimed toward interdisciplinary collaboration because the program’s ultimate goal is to extract information and facilitate discovery from complex data.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science gives broad exposure to key concepts and tools from Data analytics, AI, Machine Learning, and more knowledge and abilities to conduct data science-related research and discovery. The objective of this program is to discover information and facilitate innovation from complicated data and to discover in-depth knowledge of data-driven science about research and scientific methods, processes, and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured. The program aims to produce data research professionals who are passionate about drawing meaningful insights from data using data science approach.

For successful completion of PhD candidate should publish minimum four research articles in Scopus indexed journals, with Lincoln University College affiliation.

Program Aim

The program Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science will produce professionals who are:

• Knowledgeable and skillful in the theory and practice of areas of Data Science with the concept of research work.
• Competent to practice technically and process interpersonal skill to communication making on various situations and responsibilities during their research work.
• Capable to work ethically and adopt digital and analytical skills to lend support Data Science professional in their specialty.
• Able to adopt the autonomy and responsibilities with the excellent leadership skills that is useful for industrial needs in the field of Data Science.

Course Content: Based on the specialisation, students can opt for two subjects. The final two years focus on data science along with the specialist topic of statistical modelling and advanced courses in mathematics.

Course Content: The course for year one includes multivariable calculus and real analysis A & B, linear algebra, probability, and statistics A & B, among other modules. The second-year includes stochastic processes, Bayesian inference and computational methods, ordinary differential equations and the last year includes subjects on optimization, statistical machine learning, time series analysis, statistical computing, and few others.

5| Master in Business Intelligence and Analytics (MBIA) By International Islamic University (IIUM)

About Programme: This programme is offered in response to the emerging trends in advanced applications of ICT technologies to enhance intelligence and analytical capabilities in business decision-making. The program will help you understand how to apply Big Data analytical methods and strategies for advanced data analysis and visualization, implement quantitative modeling and data analysis techniques to business problems, communicate findings and effectively present results using data visualization techniques and use of advanced statistical tools and data programming techniques to solve practical problems in data analysis.

Course Content: The programme requires 40 credits. The courses for year one include big data across verticals and domains, data quality, unstructured data analytics, Islamic world’s view on IT and Society, data warehousing and modelling, tools for data science, visualization for decision making, data security and governance. The year two courses include datathon and bootcamp.

Duration: 2 years (Full-Time) and 3 years (Part-time)

6| Master of Data Science Coursework By University Of Malaya

About Programme: This university is situated in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur and it allows full-time mode classes for the students who wish to strengthen their career prospects in data science to acquire in-depth knowledge and skills to analyse, visualize and transform vast quantities of data in different fields into valuable insights.

Course Content: The credits of the course counts as Core Course (24 Credits), Elective Course (8 Credits) and Data Science Research Project (10 Credits). The core courses include research methodology, principles of data science, data analytics, programming for data science, data mining, machine learning for data science and big data management. The elective courses include parallel and distributed computing, big data applications and analytics, network and security and numerical optimization. However, it is to be noted that not all courses will be offered every semester, the actual courses offered will depend on the availability of the staff and the number of students registering.

Duration: 6 semesters

Course Content: This is a 40 credit programme which includes courses such as fundamental of data science, statistical methods for data analytics, unstructured data analytics, information modelling & databases, big data analytics and management, machine learning for data science., decision support & business intelligence.

Duration: 1-2 years(Full-Time) and 2-4 years (Part-Time)

About Programme: The programme aims to produce specialists in the field of Big Data Analytics capable who can make data-driven decisions and apply advanced big data analysis across many domains.

Prerequisite pathway

Candidates without a bachelor’s degree in Computing or related fields (minimum CGPA of 2.00) have the opportunity to enrol in the online Master of Data Science programme upon the completion of two prerequisite subjects: Foundations of Programming, and Database Concepts and Principles.

These non-credit bridging subjects can be completed in 7 weeks or under, and can be taken one at a time or concurrently. Besides equipping students with foundational knowledge on Python and Structured Query Language, these subjects also test the ability to study online independently.

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning for Access (APEL.A) T-7 is catered to individuals with work experience who want to pursue a master’s qualification, but do not possess a bachelor’s degree. 

APEL.A evaluates the experiential learning gained from formal, informal, and non-formal learning to determine an individual’s readiness to join a programme of study – transforming your job experience into an official qualification for entry. Details on APEL.A can be found here .

Sunway University Online MDS subjects operate with five entry points per year.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND COST

i) A bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in Computing or related fields with a minimum CGPA of 2.50, as accepted by the Academic Senate.

ii) A bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in Computing or related fields with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 but less than 2.50 can be accepted subject to internal assessment.

iii) A bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in a Non-Computing field with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 can be accepted subject to internal assessment to identify the appropriate prerequisite courses that are equivalent to the candidate’s working experience in Computing or related fields. 

iv) A bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in a Non-Computing field with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 can be accepted subject to passing the appropriate prerequisite courses.

v) Other qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in Computing or related fields recognised by the Government of Malaysia must fulfil the requirement in Item i or ii.

vi) APEL.A Certification (T-7) (Recognition of Prior Learning)

Applicants whose medium of instruction for their first degree was not English will be required to provide evidence of language ability via an IELTS test result (minimum score of 6.0).

To be eligible for the Master of Data Science you must have:

1. Completed the Graduate Diploma in Data Science with a WAM of 65 or higher OR

2. Completed an undergraduate degree in Data Science or cognate discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics) AND have sufficient Data Science background as indicated by an average mark of 70 or above across three Level III courses in Mathematics and/or Statistics and/or Computer Science and/or Econometrics.

Yes, however we do require students to have skills in calculus and basic statistics in order to complete the programming elements of this course.

The AIM PhD in Data Science program is the first of its kind in the Philippines and among only a handful in Asia. Globally, the demand for data science practitioners has been skyrocketing. The scarcity on the supply side, however, is much grimmer for data science leaders who are also expert researchers with significant novel contributions to knowledge in the field.  

The PhD in Data Science program will train individuals to conduct comprehensive and extensive research on a specific topic within the field including, but not limited to, artificial intelligence, deep learning, network science, and computer vision. 

On 10 October 2020 (10/10/2020), the first cohort of eight aspiring data science scholars and industry leaders in the era of Industry 4.0 started their journey in the program. They were welcomed during the program’s Convocation that included inspiring congratulatory messages delivered by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato de la Peña, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba, National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) President Acd. Rhodora Azanza, Philippine-American Association of Scientists and Engineers (PAASE) President Acd. Gisela Concepcion, National Scientist Raul Fabella, and Chief of Future Intelligence Technologies of Rolls-Royce, Terence Hung.

One of the important approaches to achieve competitiveness in digital transformation is through a data-driven approach.With the right data science capabilities, the human capital development from the computing area is highly required in order to meet the calls for under-explored hydrocarbon reserve al​l over the world. This trend brings about many benefits to the nation and the people, but at the same time has introduced acute shortage of skilled manpower in this area. Programme Objective

The programme objectives are: 

• Data Scientist having advanced knowledge in Data Science capable of adopting best methodologies and techniques to provide innovative solutions to various industries and society. 
• Data Scientist who has leadership skills and able to communicate as well as interact effectively with diverse stakeholders. 
• Data Scientist having positive attitudes, engaging in lifelong learning activities and entrepreneurial mindset for continual career development. 
• Data Scientist who upholds and practice ethics and professionalism for self and profession integrity.

Industries demand for graduates with technical capability to fill in the workforce gaps in various areas in data science, big data analytics and advanced algorithms domain. The impact of IR4.0 expansion requires rapid needs of Data Scientists to analyze, prepare and visualize data as well as evaluating and improving model solutions. The MSc in Data Science programme prepares students to become Data Scientists with skillsets and knowledge in data engineering, data management, data analytics, project management, machine learning, and optimization.

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate with a Master of Science in Data Science (ODL) degree, students are required to: 

• Obtain a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.00
• Satisfy all the requirements approved by UTP Senate.
• Fulfill 40 credit hours and pass the Research Methodology course.

Course Duration and Offering

Duration : 12 months to 36 months 

Offering : This course is available in Open & Distance Learning (ODL).

Entry Requirements

a)  Academic Requirements

The entry requirement for admission to MSc in Data Science is shown as below: 

• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognised university with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 or its equivalent. 
• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognised university with a CGPA of 2.50 - 2.74 or its equivalent will require internal rigorous assessment.
• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognised university with a CGPA of 2.00 - 2.49 or its equivalent will require 5 years of working experience and internal rigorous assessment. 
• Apply with your working experience. Candidates who satisfy APEL A requirements are eligible to enroll. 
• For candidates without Computing Degree (Level 6 MQF), prerequisites modules in computing will be offered to adequately prepare them.

b) English  Requirements

Pass English requirement with a minimum score of: 

• A minimum TOEFL score of 550 or equivalent
• A minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent
• Native English speakers or holding a degree with English as the medium of instruction may be exempted from this requirement.
