EBSCO Open Dissertations

EBSCO Open Dissertations makes electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) more accessible to researchers worldwide. The free portal is designed to benefit universities and their students and make ETDs more discoverable.

Increasing Discovery & Usage of ETD Research

EBSCO Open Dissertations is a collaboration between EBSCO and BiblioLabs to increase traffic and discoverability of ETD research. You can join the movement and add your theses and dissertations to the database, making them freely available to researchers everywhere while increasing traffic to your institutional repository.

EBSCO Open Dissertations extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present.

How Does EBSCO Open Dissertations Work?

Your ETD metadata is harvested via OAI and integrated into EBSCO’s platform, where pointers send traffic to your IR.

EBSCO integrates this data into their current subscriber environments and makes the data available on the open web via opendissertations.org .

Harvard University Theses, Dissertations, and Prize Papers

The Harvard University Archives ’ collection of theses, dissertations, and prize papers document the wide range of academic research undertaken by Harvard students over the course of the University’s history.

Beyond their value as pieces of original research, these collections document the history of American higher education, chronicling both the growth of Harvard as a major research institution as well as the development of numerous academic fields. They are also an important source of biographical information, offering insight into the academic careers of the authors.

Printed list of works awarded the Bowdoin prize in 1889-1890.

Spanning from the ‘theses and quaestiones’ of the 17th and 18th centuries to the current yearly output of student research, they include both the first Harvard Ph.D. dissertation (by William Byerly, Ph.D . 1873) and the dissertation of the first woman to earn a doctorate from Harvard ( Lorna Myrtle Hodgkinson , Ed.D. 1922).

Other highlights include:

  • The collection of Mathematical theses, 1782-1839
  • The 1895 Ph.D. dissertation of W.E.B. Du Bois, The suppression of the African slave trade in the United States, 1638-1871
  • Ph.D. dissertations of astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (Ph.D. 1925) and physicist John Hasbrouck Van Vleck (Ph.D. 1922)
  • Undergraduate honors theses of novelist John Updike (A.B. 1954), filmmaker Terrence Malick (A.B. 1966),  and U.S. poet laureate Tracy Smith (A.B. 1994)
  • Undergraduate prize papers and dissertations of philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson (A.B. 1821), George Santayana (Ph.D. 1889), and W.V. Quine (Ph.D. 1932)
  • Undergraduate honors theses of U.S. President John F. Kennedy (A.B. 1940) and Chief Justice John Roberts (A.B. 1976)

Twenty-eight Purdue HHS researchers named in 2023 list of world’s most-cited scientists

Written by: Denise Buhrmester, [email protected]

Purdue HHS data provided by: Jordan Gooch, senior data analyst, External Data Analytics, [email protected]

"HHS Faculty, Top 2% most-cited researchers"

In a database compiled by Stanford University in partnership with Elsevier , 28 scientists and scholars in the Purdue University College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) appear among the top 2% of the most-cited researchers across seven disciplines. Inclusion in the database means the individual met a variety of metrics that place them among the top 2% of researchers based on citations for 2022.

In addition to appearing on Elsevier’s list for 2022 citations, one HHS faculty member — Louis Tay , the William C. Byham Professor in Psychological Sciences — also appeared on Clarivate’s 2023 list of Highly Cited Researchers , which identifies scholars whose work has been cited most often in papers over the past decade. Those chosen for the 2023 list authored studies that rank in the top 1% of scholarly citations worldwide within their disciplines.

The following HHS researchers (current, in alphabetical order) appeared on Elsevier’s list of the top 2% of the world’s most-cited researchers:

  • Thomas Berndt , professor of psychological sciences
  • Liping Cai , professor of hospitality and tourism management
  • Wayne Campbell , professor of nutrition science
  • Jason Cannon , professor of health sciences
  • Heather Eicher-Miller , professor of nutrition science
  • Laura Elenbaas , assistant professor of human development and family science
  • Dan Foti , associate professor of psychological sciences
  • Jennifer Freeman , professor of health sciences
  • Elliot Friedman , William and Sally Berner Hanley Professor of Gerontology
  • SooCheong (Shawn) Jang , professor of hospitality and tourism management
  • Qing Jiang , professor of nutrition science
  • Jeffrey Karpicke , James V. Bradley Professor of Psychological Sciences
  • Ceridwyn King , professor of hospitality and tourism management
  • Ananthanarayan Krishnan , professor of speech, language, and hearing sciences
  • Xinran Lehto , professor of hospitality and tourism management
  • Laurence Leonard , Rachel E. Stark Distinguished Professor of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences
  • Shuang Liu , professor of health sciences
  • Donald Lynam , distinguished professor of psychological sciences
  • Richard Mattes , distinguished professor of nutrition science
  • Catherine (Cammie) McBride , professor of human development and family science
  • Laura Murray-Kolb , professor of nutrition science
  • David Purpura , professor of human development and family science
  • Thomas Redick , associate professor of psychological sciences
  • Douglas Samuel , professor of psychological sciences
  • Jonathan Shannahan , associate professor of health sciences
  • Louis Tay , William C. Byham Professor of Industrial-Organizational Psychology
  • Kipling Williams , distinguished professor of psychological sciences
  • Wei Zheng , professor of health sciences

The database, updated October 2023, is available through the  Elsevier Data Repository .

About the Standford-Elsevier list Elsevier’s single-year data, from which this list was derived, pertains to citations received during the 2022 calendar year. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification. The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the subfield. Calculations were performed using all Scopus author profiles as of October 1, 2023. If an author is not on the list, the composite indicator value was not high enough to appear. Using the most recent single-year data provides an up-to-date snapshot of productivity and expertise across 22 disciplines. This list does not include emeritus researchers as well as those who have left Purdue University or are officially on leave. Some Purdue researchers may not be on the list because their Scopus account still has them affiliated with a former institution. Researchers can request  Scopus  update their ID to Purdue University.  Learn more .

At least 35 of America’s billionaires are PhDs. As academic jobs become scarce, doctorates should get down to business

Ph.D. graduates are increasingly choosing careers in the private sector.

Samantha Dewalt is managing director of the Lehigh@NasdaqCenter, an exclusive education-industry partnership between Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center in San Francisco .

Traditionally, a doctoral degree is regarded almost exclusively as a passport to scholarly distinction and academic tenure. Any person who committed the time, energy, and expense to attain a PhD appeared inevitably destined for the academy, free to pursue knowledge without commercial intent.

So goes the standard rationale—and training—for a doctorate. Candidates are groomed for careers in academia, where they will research, teach, and publish. That tradition, though well-intentioned, is overdue for a drastic expansion.

Saving research from ‘the valley of death’

Such an expansion has already begun. In December, the National Science Foundation awarded $100 million to 18 academic institutions all across the U.S. to “speed and scale research into products and services that benefit the nation.” The first-ever Accelerating Research Translation awards are designed to enable university scholars to convert academic innovation into commercial value and societal purpose. Each school awarded will partner with a mentoring institution of higher education already equipped with “a robust ecosystem for translational research.”

Lehigh University is among the recipients of the abovementioned National Science Foundation awards, with Carnegie Mellon University acting as its peer mentor. The $6 million award will be earmarked specifically to increase the translation of scientific discoveries in engineering, science, health, humanities, business, education, and other disciplines—by faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers into prototypes, products, and programs that will benefit society.

Meanwhile, as the supply of jobs in academia struggles to keep up with the demand, more PhDs are turning to careers in industry. In 2020, The Princeton Review warned, “If it’s your ambition to become a professor, you should be aware that the PhD. track is no guarantee of a life in  academia .” As such, candidates will need to be prepared differently.

Make no mistake: Some college graduates bearing PhDs have proven highly enterprising. It is estimated that the private sector now employs about as many PhD graduates as educational institutions.

Most research finds that between one-third and one-half of all PhD graduates globally stay in academia , while others may migrate to the private sector. Almost daily, some entrepreneurial PhDs launch new ventures that eventually hit the jackpot. Indeed, Forbes  has reported that “at least” 35 U.S. billionaires obtained a PhD before plunging into business.

But let’s face it: Academics are rarely trained to be entrepreneurs. They typically focus on conducting research, publishing manuscripts, and at times, developing intellectual property, but without cultivating the business knowledge or resources to turn innovations into viable market solutions. And it’s a shame when university research languishes on the shelf, never reaching the market—the so-called “valley of death”.

How America’s top universities are doing it

Universities are amping up efforts to educate PhD students about how to better capitalize on a doctoral degree. At Lehigh University, we have conducted a competitive analysis of what other higher education institutions, particularly those highly regarded for entrepreneurial activity, are doing to engage PhD students in entrepreneurial courses and programs. Among the schools we studied were Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, Dartmouth, and UC Berkeley. Overall, our analysis identified a need—and opportunity—to transform PhD education.

More particularly, we found that although most of these top-tier universities offer entrepreneurship education for graduate and undergraduate students alike, few target PhD students. We also learned that because most of the graduate courses in entrepreneurship originate in business or engineering schools, few are truly interdisciplinary. We also found that PhD students are more likely to participate in entrepreneurial activity if they have faculty advisors who are themselves entrepreneurs or at least entrepreneurial-minded.

Stanford University particularly stands out as an exemplary entrepreneurial environment for students. It benefits from education-industry partnerships that provide access to the most innovative companies in Silicon Valley. UC Berkeley distinguishes itself, too, for its emphasis on interdisciplinary entrepreneurial development and close collaboration with nearby startup incubators.

Dartmouth College pioneered the first engineering   PhD innovation program  that provides entrepreneurial training to turn research discoveries into market solutions. The PhD fellows take additional coursework in business, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and spend up to six months at an industry internship.

Entrepreneurship education should be democratized. Other universities should follow the examples set by the top-tiers. All students—even those on a budget—should have access to the equivalent of an Ivy League experience.

Our university is taking a step in this new direction, to better expose our PhD students to entrepreneurial experiences and career pathways. Last fall, we introduced a hands-on, real-world, interdisciplinary course on entrepreneurship for PhD students. Built on a model designed by the National Science Foundation, the course is offered for credit and available to graduate students across disciplines through Lehigh@NasdaqCenter, partnering with the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Lehigh’s Office of Technology Transfer.

It’s time for doctorates to get down to business. More PhDs should treat the ideas that emerge from scholarship as entrepreneurial opportunities. But first, they must know how to harness all that valuable education in the service of both our society and our economy.

  • Barron Trump, the only son of Donald Trump and Melania Trump, spent much of his childhood in New York.
  • Trump and his children have many ties to the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
  • Trump University or Trump U was a real estate program from 2005 to 2010. It was not an actual university.

Now that Barron Trump is a class of 2024 high school graduate, what's next for the youngest son of Donald Trump?

Barron Trump, the only child of former president Donald Trump and former first lady Melania Trump, received his high school diploma May 17, 2024, from Oxbridge Academy near West Palm Beach, Florida. Will Barron Trump go to college? The former first couple has not said much.

One possibility could be New York University in Manhattan, where Barron Trump spent much of his childhood — and lived until his father was sworn in as the 45th president in early 2017.

Trump said on Fox News this month that Barron had been accepted "everywhere" he applied, adding the recent high school graduate is "very sought after from the standpoint he's a very smart guy."

Almost a year ago,  Donald Trump  said  his youngest son , then a senior at Oxbridge Academy, was “thinking” about the University of Pennsylvania, from where the former president graduated and studied at the Wharton School.

In fact, Barron Trump's half-siblings — Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump (born to Donald Trump and Ivana Trump) and Tiffany Trump (born to Donald Trump and Marla Maples) — have ties to the University of Pennsylvania or Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Where did the Trump family attend college? Here's a roundup.

Where will Barron Trump attend college?

As of Thursday, June 13, it has not been announced where Barron Trump, the youngest son of former president Donald Trump and former first lady Melania Trump, will attend college. Barron Trump graduated May 17, 2024, from Oxbridge Academy near West Palm Beach, Florida.

Where did Donald Trump attend college?

Donald Trump graduated from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in May 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics.

Where did Melania Trump attend college?

Melania Trump, the former first lady of the U.S. from 2016 to 2020, briefly attended college, but never graduated. Then Melania Knauss, the Slovenian "began modeling at age 16, and two years later she signed on with an agency in Milan. She enrolled at the University of Ljubljana but dropped out after one year to pursue her modeling career," according to the Melania Trump bio on biography.com .

In her early days of modeling, the site states, Melania Trump worked in Milan and Paris before moving to New York in 1996. She met future husband Donald Trump two years later at a New York fashion party. (The Trumps were engaged in 2004 and married in 2005.)

Melania Trump, then known professionally as Melania Knauss, appeared on the covers of Harper's Bazaar (Bulgaria edition), Vanity Fair (Italy edition), GQ (for which she posed nude in January 2000) and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue .

The University of Ljubljana , or UL, is the oldest and largest university in Slovenia.

Where did Donald Trump Jr. attend college?

Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000. Like his father, Donald Trump Jr. has a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance.

Where did Eric Trump attend college?

Eric Trump graduated from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor's degree in finance and management in 2006.

Where did Ivanka Trump attend college?

According to a March 2017 story in the Georgetown Voice , Donald Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, was a student at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., but transferred after two years to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Ivanka Trump graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in economics from Penn in 2004.

Where did Tiffany Trump attend college?

Like her father, Tiffany Trump attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. Four years later, Tiffany Trump graduated from Georgetown Law School as part of the class of 2020. Like many class of 2020 seniors (for high school and college), Tiffany Trump's college graduation was a virtual commencement ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is Trump University?

Trump University or Trump U was a real estate program that ran from 2005 to 2010.

According to an April 2018 USA TODAY story , "Trump University was not an actual university but a for-profit seminar series, and former students waged a years-long battle claiming the course misled them with claims of teaching real estate success." That same month, a federal judge finalized a $25 million settlement between then-President Trump and students of his shuttered Trump University.

The order marked the end of two class-action lawsuits and a civil lawsuit from New York. Trump had entered settlement talks days after the 2016 election and in April 2018 agreed to pay the millions under terms that let him admit no wrongdoing, USA TODAY reported.

Muscular Dystrophy Association Announces Collaborative Infrastructure Research Grant with Support from RYR-1 Foundation for Nearly $300,000 to Joshua Todd, PhD at NIH for RYR-1 Genetic Database Development

New York, Monday, June 12, 2024 — The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) announced today an Infrastructure Research Grant continuing its longstanding collaborative work with the RYR-1 Foundation. J oshua Todd, PhD, of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) , NIH will receive $294,670.11 to support a crucial database to collect information on genetic disorders involving the RYR-1 gene that regulates calcium during muscle contractions. This grant, supplemented by $25,000 from The RYR1 Foundation, aims to address the critical need for a dedicated database to advance research and therapeutic development for RYR1 -related disorders.

Image of Joshua Todd, PhD

“The database will allow users to efficiently identify which variants are already being investigated under a given therapeutic paradigm. This will minimize redundancy and encourage new avenues of therapeutic discovery,” said Dr. Todd.

“ RYR1 -related disorders represent a complex group of neuromuscular conditions that require careful management and support. Research into these disorders, such as the establishment of comprehensive databases and the development of targeted therapies, is critical for advancing our understanding and improving clinical outcomes for affected individuals. The research from this grant marks a pivotal step forward in our efforts to accelerate research and therapeutic development for the families served by Muscular Dystrophy Association’s mission. This initiative holds immense promise for advancing our understanding of RYR1 -related disorders and ultimately, improving clinical outcomes," said Sharon Hesterlee, PhD, Chief Research Officer, Muscular Dystrophy Association .

This MDA Infrastructure Research Grants underscore the MDA's steadfast commitment to driving progress in neuromuscular diseases. By investing in cutting-edge research initiatives, the MDA is empowering scientists and institutions to pursue innovative approaches and accelerate the development of life-changing therapies.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the world’s leading organization dedicated to helping individuals and families living with neuromuscular diseases,” said Michael F. Goldberg, M.D., MPH, President, Board of Directors of The RYR-1 Foundation and Co-Chair of Research . “By collaborating with the MDA, The RYR-1 Foundation will be able to more effectively advance research, raise awareness, and provide outreach to people living with RYR-1-related diseases.” As someone who is affected by RYR-1-RD, Dr. Goldberg understands first-hand the importance of similarly affected individuals and families.

Central core disease, centronuclear myopathy, multiminicore myopathy and other diseases caused by a mutation in the ryanodine receptor (RYR-1) are among the neuromuscular diseases MDA fights as an umbrella organization with a big-picture perspective on finding treatments and cures for children and adults whose weakening physical strength and loss of mobility make the most basic daily activities extraordinarily challenging.

About MDA Infrastructure Research Grants

MDA Infrastructure Research Grants are awarded through a rigorous selection process to accelerate progress toward effective therapies and ultimately, cures. These grants are designed to support the development of tools, techniques, and services of need to the neuromuscular research community. The main review criterion for this grant is the need for the infrastructure to further research for the purpose of therapy development. Recipients of an MDA Infrastructure Research Grant must develop a plan to make this MDA-funded resource available to the research community and have a plan for sustaining the infrastructure beyond the period of MDA support. Letters of support from the community are an essential part of the application. MDA research grants go towards spearheading innovative projects with the potential to revolutionize the field of muscle disease research. For more information about the Muscular Dystrophy Association and its research initiatives, please visit MDA.org/Research .

Sandy Hook shooting survivors to graduate with mixed emotions without 20 of their classmates

Many of the survivors said they continue to live with the trauma of that day: loud noises still cause them to jump out of their seats, and some always keep an eye on a room's exits..

Survivors of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

By DAVE COLLINS, Associated Press

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Like graduating seniors everywhere, members of Newtown High School’s class of 2024 expect bittersweet feelings at their commencement ceremony — excitement about heading off to college or careers and sadness about leaving their friends and community.

But about 60 of the 330 kids graduating Wednesday will also be carrying the emotional burden that comes from having survived one of the  deadliest school shootings  in U.S. history and knowing many former classmates won’t get to walk across the stage with them.  Twenty of their fellow first graders and six educators were killed  at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012.

The victims will be honored during the ceremony, but details have been kept under wraps.

Soon, these Sandy Hook survivors will be leaving the community that many call a “bubble” because of the comfort and protection it’s provided from the outside world. Five of them sat down with The Associated Press to discuss their graduation, future plans and how the tragedy continues to shape their lives.

‘They’ll be there with us’

Lilly Wasilnak, a survivor of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

“I think we’re all super excited for the day,” said Lilly Wasilnak, 17, who was in a classroom down the hall from where her peers were killed. “But I think we can’t forget … that there is a whole chunk of our class missing. And so going into graduation, we all have very mixed emotions — trying to be excited for ourselves and this accomplishment that we’ve worked so hard for, but also those who aren’t able to share it with us, who should have been able to.”

Emma Ehrens was one of 11 children from Classroom 10 to survive the attack. She and other students managed to flee when the gunman paused to reload and another student, Jesse Lewis, yelled for everyone to run. Jesse didn’t make it. Five kids and both teachers in the room were killed.

“I am definitely going be feeling a lot of mixed emotions,” said Ehrens, 17. “I’m super excited to be, like, done with high school and moving on to the next chapter of my life. But I’m also so … mournful, I guess, to have to be walking across that stage alone. … I like to think that they’ll be there with us and walking across that stage with us.”

Grace Fischer, 18, was in a classroom down the hall from the killings with Ella Seaver and Wasilnak. With only 11 days to go before Christmas, the school was in the holiday spirit and the children were looking forward to making gingerbread houses that day.

“As much as we’ve tried to have that normal, like, childhood and normal high school experience, it wasn’t totally normal,” Fischer said. “But even though we are missing … such a big chunk of our class, like Lilly said, we are still graduating. … We want to be those regular teenagers who walk across the stage that day and feel that, like, celebratory feeling in ourselves, knowing that we’ve come this far.”

Leaving home and the ‘bubble’

Members of the Junior Newtown Action Alliance prepare to speak at a rally.

Many of the survivors said they continue to live with the trauma of that day: Loud noises still cause them to jump out of their seats, and some always keep an eye on a room’s exits. Many have spent years in therapy for post-traumatic stress, depression and anxiety.

Emma Ehrens, a survivor of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, hugs a family friend.

The town provided an array of services to the families. Officials shielded them as much as they could from the media and outsiders, and the students said leaving such a protective community will be both difficult and somewhat freeing.

“In Sandy Hook, what happened is always kind of looming over us,” said Matt Holden, 17, who was in a classroom down the hall from the shooting. “I think leaving and being able to make new memories and meet new people, even if we’ll be more isolated away from people who have stories like us, we’ll be more free to kind of write our own story. … And kind of, you know, not let this one event that happened because we were very young define our lifetimes.”

Ehrens said she feels some anxiety over leaving Newtown, but that it’s a necessary step to begin the next chapter of her life.

“It definitely feels for me that we’re kind of stuck in the same system that we’ve been stuck in for past 12 years,” she said.

“For me, I feel like it’s definitely going to get better and be able to break free of that system and just be able to become my own person rather than, again, the Sandy Hook kid,” Ehrens said.

Fischer echoed that sentiment, saying that although it will be hard leaving the town and friends she’s grown up with, she’ll make new friends and build a new community as she explores new challenges at college.

“Sandy Hook will always be with me,” she said.

Buttons lay on a table during a rally against gun violence.

Tragedy spurs activism, shapes their futures

All five seniors have been active in the Junior Newtown Action Alliance and its anti-gun violence efforts, saying they want to prevent shootings from happening through gun control and other measures. Last week, several of them met with Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House to discuss their experiences and call for change.

They say their fallen classmates have motivated their advocacy, which they all plan to continue after high school.

Seaver, 18, said working with the alliance makes her feel less helpless. She plans to study psychology in college and to become a therapist, wanting to give back in a way that helped her.

“Putting my voice out there and working with all of these amazing people to try and create change really puts a meaning to the trauma that we all were forced to experience,” Seaver said. “It’s a way to feel like you’re doing something. Because we are. We’re fighting for change and we’re really not going to stop until we get it.”

Local residents join survivors of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting for a rally.

Ehrens said she plans to study political science and the law, with the aim of becoming a politician or civil rights lawyer.

Fischer said she, too, hopes to become a civil rights lawyer.

Holden plans to major in political science and wants to push for gun policy changes.

Wasilnak, meanwhile, said she hasn’t settled on a major, but that she intends to continue to speak out against gun violence.

“For me, I knew I wanted to do something more since I was younger when the tragedy first happened,” Wasilnak said. “I wanted to turn such a terrible thing into something more, and that these children and educators didn’t die for nothing. Of course it was awful what happened to them, and it should have never happened. But I think that for me, something bigger needed to come out of it, or else it would have been all for nothing.”
