Newton Europe is an implementation-focused management consultancy company. This means it focuses on identifying strategies to improve business practices, plus the actual changes and activities needed to implement that strategy. It is one of the top consultancy companies in the UK.

Careers at Newton Europe

Implementation-focused consultancy differs from strategy- and operations-focused consultancy as it is more specific to each client and consultants have a more hands-on approach. This will suit people who enjoy working with people and being more active in bringing their analysis from paper to practice, which is the core goal of the company.

Newton Europe looks for people who are enthusiastic and innovative. If you enjoy problem-solving and applying your knowledge to unique situations, then implementation consultancy is a great career path for you.

In particular, Newton Europe has a strong graduate scheme and works to foster career-long development. It views retaining talent as the best way to create a successful company.

Newton Europe Application Process

Online application, psychometric testing, video interview, selection day, final interviews.

Newton Europe states that fewer than 1% of applicants are successful, which may seem like long odds. This guide will hopefully make the application process a little less daunting.

The application stages (covered in more detail further down) are as follows:

  • Online application . Basic information about your skills and experience.
  • Psychometric testing . Numerical and data interpretation tests, taken remotely.
  • Video interview . Filmed and sent back for Newton staff to review.
  • Selection day . Consists of more assessment tests, group activities, and individual presentations.
  • Final interviews . Two 45-minute interviews with senior Newton staff, who will determine whether your skills and personality are the right fit for the company.

Newton provides comprehensive feedback if you are unsuccessful. So even if you don’t feel confident about your chances of success, it’s always best to put yourself out there and learn from the experience.

Newton Europe online application

The first stage of the process is the online application. If you are applying for a graduate role then you will not need to submit a CV and cover letter as well. Make sure that you know what Newton Europe is looking for and why you think you’d be a good fit for the company.

Newton Europe Aptitude Tests

Newton europe numerical reasoning test.

The next stage of the online application is the psychometric tests . Each takes around an hour, and once you start your application you have seven days to complete them.

One of the key workplace skills that Newton Europe looks for is excellent numeracy, meaning that you are confident and capable when handling numerical information and data interpretation.

This is important to keep in mind when doing your numerical tests, since it will factor in the success of your application. Newton Europe actually makes its own tests and offers its own practice questions ; however to really improve your score, it’s a good idea to do a lot more practice.

Practicing numerical reasoning tests will help to find any weaknesses in your ability to deal with numerical data and get you comfortable with the types of questions you might face in your test.

You can also find practice data interpretation tests , which is another type of numerical literacy test included in the application process.

Newton Europe verbal reasoning test

Verbal reasoning tests are common in the hiring process as they give employers an insight into your communication and critical thinking skills .

Verbal reasoning tests don’t just assess your language skills, but also how well you solve problems, follow logic and perform under pressure – all of which are vital workplace skills for companies like Newton Europe.

It is important to practice verbal reasoning tests as much as possible before you take your test as they can be quite tricky, especially with the time restriction. Usually the format is that you will be presented with a passage of text and then asked to answer if statements made are true, false, or you cannot say from the information given.

Check out these tips and tricks for verbal reasoning tests that can help to improve your score.

BBC

Newton Europe video interview

The last online stage of your application is the video interview. You have three days to complete this after you receive your invite and it takes around 15 minutes to film.

Newton Europe uses the video interview as a way to get to know you and see your personality, so it’s important to feel prepared and relaxed when you take it. Plan accordingly to make sure you’re in a calm environment without any distractions.

Newton Europe prides itself on a lot of client contact, and wants to see how well you present yourself and communicate your ideas – since this will be a reflection of the company itself should you be hired.

Research the company and make sure you have a good understanding of everything Newton does before going into your interview. Video interviews can feel awkward, but take the time to do practice questions beforehand and you should feel more ready.

Newton Europe selection day

The selection day is an in-person day of activities and tests, during which you get the opportunity to meet current Newton staff and get to know each other better.

Some of the typical activities include:

  • Icebreakers . Introducing yourself and others to the group.
  • Group projects . You will work in a group on a hypothetical project to show your approach to teamwork. A key aspect to be mindful of here is that every person gets different information going in – so if someone mentions data that you did not get, write it down.
  • Individual case study . You will get a letter mimicking an interested client, which you will use as the basis for an initial meeting. Then you will role-play the initial meeting with Newton staff acting as the client.

You will also have to do another numerical reasoning test, so remember to practice this as well and bring your own calculator.

Newton Europe final interviews

If you do well during the selection day, you will be invited to the final interviews. These are usually two panel interviews with two or more senior Newton representatives, with the aim to get to know you better from different perspectives.

This is your last chance to show off all of your experience and how you believe it applies to the role at Newton Europe, so make sure that you’ve done your research on the company and your potential role there. Have a look at our top interview tips to make sure that you feel fully prepared.

A unique part of Newton’s process is that the night before the final interview you will be invited to an informal dinner with the other candidates. This is meant to give you the opportunity to relax and talk to both the other applicants and current Newton staff in a more casual and friendly setting.

While this is still part of the process, remember the aim is to get to know you and see how you fit in with the company culture, therefore, the more you can relax and embrace the opportunity, the better.

Close to actual assessment

The questions themselves were similar to the actual online assessment. I would only add that the time limit/question ratio is smaller in the real assessment, as it's quite difficult to even finish all the questions on time for the real assessment.

Graph reading!

Liked the graph questions, some simple questions on reading off simply. Lots of percentage increase or decrease.

I like the simplicity of the screen design: clear fonts, clear graphs and tables, good use of colour, not unreasonable amounts of data cluttering the screen.

Tough - need to brush up on maths

Challenging questions with a variety of data sets, presented in ways I haven't seen before. I definitely need to refresh my memory on the basics of maths! Glad I took this before attempting the real test from the employer.

Not precise in wording

Some questions could have been worded better (e.g. ratio of earthquakes between 2021 and 2022 - to what?) and charts need to be labelled.

It was fine, maybe make it slightly harder, Newton's tests are immensely tough. Maybe take their test, take pictures and create something based on that. The pass rate for a Newton test should be like 50 per cent.

  • Careers at Newton Europe

Founded in 2001, Newton Europe is a UK based consultancy firm and a Times Top 100 Graduate Employer. Its consulting approach is based on organisational change from the inside out. It works closely with clients to identify key challenges, and then formulate, plan and execute effective solutions.

Newton Europe offers its services across both the public and private sectors, working with clients in:

  • Central Government
  • Manufacturing
  • Infrastructure
  • Adult social care
  • Children's services

For those starting out in their career, Newton Europe offers two paths to entry.

The first is as a field-based graduate consultant in either Operations or Digital. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients across the UK. Successful applicants are given comprehensive training and support and typically reach senior consultant level in around 18 months.

The second is its head office graduate scheme. Based in Oxfordshire, there are three streams to choose from, with Operations the most applicable for finance graduates. It's a rotational programme, and you'll spend between 12 and 18 months completing short placements before choosing your preferred area of the Operations team.

  • Newton Europe Application Process

Whichever path you opt for, you'll need to complete a multi-stage application process. This is designed to give Newton Europe a detailed picture of who you are, what you're capable of, and what you hope to achieve.

It's also a chance for you to learn more about what life at Newton Europe is like, so take this opportunity to make sure this is the right career path for you.

Newton Europe Online Application

Once you've chosen the graduate scheme you wish to pursue, you'll need to fill out an online application form via the Newton Europe website. You can expect a standard application form here, with sections for your personal details, academic achievements and past work experience.

You'll also be asked some initial screening questions, for which you should prepare well-researched answers. Be sure to show Newton Europe you have what it's looking for by referring to the job description and highlighting key strengths like your interpersonal skills, adaptability, self-motivation and collaboration.

  • Newton Europe Aptitude Tests

Newton Europe is a data-driven company, so it expects all applicants to be proficient in the analysis of numbers. To measure this, it uses two short online assessments - one to test numerical reasoning, one to test data interpretation.

Both are multiple-choice and both must be completed within seven days from when you receive your invitation.

Newton Europe Numerical Test

The numerical reasoning test is not a complex maths exam, but a measure of your capacity for using numerical information to solve a given problem. That said, you will be required to apply basic arithmetic, so it's wise to brush up on your skills here before taking your official test.

You'll be given word problems explaining numerical facts and how they relate to each other, typically measurements, prices, quantities etc. These will be accompanied by a visual version of those facts in the form of a diagram, table, chart or graph. You'll also be given four answer options, only one of which will be correct.

These tests can be a little daunting at first, particularly if you're unfamiliar with them. Use practice tests to familiarise yourself with the format and question structure - and to exercise your numerical reasoning skills. You are permitted to use a calculator and should keep a pen and paper handy for your workings out.

Newton Europe Data Interpretation Test

In the data interpretation test, you'll be given a written business scenario with accompanying data illustrated with charts or diagrams. You'll have around three questions to answer based on each scenario, with five multiple-choice options to choose from.

Each scenario - and the accompanying data - will detail the way a business operates. What's under assessment is your ability to interpret that data to determine what it means in terms of costs and profit, and in some cases, to identify more efficient methods of operation.

Again, you are permitted to use a calculator and should take plenty of practice tests to improve your performance.

The two tests combined take around an hour to complete, and if you have any questions or technical issues you should contact the Newton Europe recruitment team.

Newton Europe Online Video Interview

If your test scores meet the required benchmark, you'll receive an invitation to an online video interview. This is a series of pre-recorded questions to which you'll need to record and upload your own video answers.

One of the objectives of the video interview is to see how well you present yourself, and how capable you are of expressing your thoughts clearly. This is particularly important for consultancy roles where you'll be putting in a lot of client-facing hours. Practice speaking to the camera until you feel you come across naturally.

Though it's impossible to predict what questions you'll be asked, you should spend some time looking back on your experience and note down examples of why this makes you a strong candidate. The interview will involve two technical questions for which you'll need to make some calculations, so have a calculator ready.

You'll have seven days to complete your video interview, and the whole thing should take no more than 20 minutes.

Newton Europe Selection Day

The next step in the Newton Europe application process is a selection day. These were traditionally held in person but now take place virtually on the company's own selection day platform.

You'll take part in a variety of tasks specifically designed to test the skills and qualities that Newton Europe sees as vital to a successful career. Your exact schedule will be sent to you prior, but it's a good idea to prepare for such exercises as:

Group tasks - you may be asked to work collaboratively on a short hypothetical project, testing your teamwork and communication skills.

Case study task - you may be required to complete your own case study, and present it to a member of the hiring team as if you were presenting to a client.

The selection day will involve a live two-way interview, so make sure you're prepared to promote your skills and explain the motivations behind your application. You'll also have a chance to chat with current Newton employees and learn more about what your future career looks like.

Newton Europe Final Interviews

Newton Europe takes a slightly different approach to the final stage of recruitment by inviting the most promising candidates to an informal dinner. This gives you the chance to meet your fellow applicants and mingle with experienced Newton consultants in a relaxed environment.

You'll need to prepare for an overnight stay as the following day is when you'll attend your final interviews. There will be two of them, each with a senior member of the relevant team, and each lasting around 45 minutes.

After every stage prior to these final interviews, you'll have been given constructive feedback on your performance. Use this to prepare and make the best possible impression in this last stage of recruitment.

Which of the following statements logically follows from the given premise: 'All successful consultancy projects require thorough market analysis, but some market analyses do not result in a successful consultancy project'?

  • Some successful consultancy projects may not require thorough market analysis.
  • Thorough market analysis guarantees a successful consultancy project.
  • No unsuccessful consultancy project has a thorough market analysis.
  • If a consultancy project was not successful, then either it did not include thorough market analysis or there were other mitigating factors.

A consultancy firm billed a client for three projects completed over a period of six months. The first project cost was $125,000, the second project cost 15% more than the first, and the final project cost 10% less than the second. What is the total amount billed for all three projects?

A team of consultants undertook a project pipeline analysis. If they reviewed 75% of the pipeline in 15 days, how many more days will they need to finish reviewing the entire pipeline, assuming the pace of work remains the same?

During a strategic review meeting, four proposals were discussed. If Proposal A will double the investment in two years, Proposal B will triple it in four years, and Proposal C will quadruple it in five years, which proposal has the highest annual growth rate?

  • They all have the same growth rate

An associate finds an inconsistency in a report: if the first part of the report states that revenue grew by 5% each year for two years, but the summary states a total growth of 15%, which statement would be correct?

Ever heard a musician play a piece perfectly on stage? That's because they've practiced it a hundred times! Approach your practice exams the same way. Our tests at Fintest give you a real sense of the environment and question style you’ll face. So, when it's showtime, you'll feel like you've been there before. Keep it real, and the real thing will seem like just another practice!

Take time after each practice exam to reflect on your thought process. Identifying where your reasoning paid off (or where it didn’t) is key!

When taking timed tests, it’s natural to rush. But slow down a little - accuracy matters as much as speed. At Fintest, our timed practice tests help you find a comfortable pace where you can answer correctly without the clock breathing down your neck. It's about finding that sweet spot where accuracy meets agility. Balance is the name of the game!

Oops! Hit a snag? Don’t let it trip you up for the rest of the test. In our practice sessions, you’ll learn to shake off mistakes and keep moving. Because let’s face it, errors happen, even to the best of us. The question is - how swift is your recovery? With Fintest, build that resilience so on D-day, you’re unshakeable.

Working in Consulting: Top tips from a Digital Consultant at Newton Europe

newton europe case study interview

We catch up with Yasmin about how she secured a role with Newton Europe, her top tip for members going through the application process and how she tackled the toughest interview question she's faced.

What stood out to you about the firm you secured your role with?

I chose to apply to Newton Europe because of the unique way they combine operations and technology in their Digital Consultant role. I wanted to keep using my skills in machine learning and develop my interests in technology while working side by side with clients in a traditional business consulting setting. Aside from the suitability of the role, the supportive and people-led nature of Newton culture is heavily demonstrated throughout their application process, from tailed newsletters at each application stage to a virtual activity night before the final interviews. The opportunity to meet various offer-holders and current graduates assured me I'd enjoy a graduate role with Newton.

How did you build your commercial awareness before the interview?

I am currently completing a Machine Learning MSc at the University of Nottingham, so a lot of the more technical awareness and knowledge needed during the application process I'd picked up on from my course. For building practical skills, such as tackling case studies and building business awareness, Newton run a variety of webinars for applicants which I found really useful and can be found on their website. I also joined a pro-bono student-led consultancy called 180 Degrees Consulting to gain practical experience of interacting with clients and learning about business models, all while working for great charitable causes! Finally, I read up on notable projects Newton had worked on in the past, such as the Ventilator Project launched during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What would be your top tip to members going through the application process?

Be patient! Especially at the moment with virtual application processes, there can be a fair wait in between each application stage. Keep building on your professional development in the meantime and trust the process. Equally, it's also important to not over-prep - I've found that with Newton, in particular, value is given to being authentic and not an 'interview machine', something I initially struggled with and received feedback on following my Selection Day. Be sure to take this feedback on board and reflect on it before your final interviews.

How did Bright Network help you secure this role?

I joined Bright Network this summer about a month before I started applying to graduate roles. Their virtual internships in technology and consulting introduced me to companies, including Newton Europe, that I hadn't previously heard about. I also used the resources available from Bright Network, including the CV and Aptitude Testing guides, to prepare for each application stage, which helped build my confidence in the early stages.

What’s been the toughest interview question you've faced and how did you tackle it?

Newton like to test for a certain level of self-awareness and personal understanding, in addition to the usual technical questions. Questions that struck me as different from the traditional include;

  • 'Tell me about your friend's greatest accomplishment'
  • 'If your friends were to say something (constructively!) critical about you, what might they bring up?'

Because of these types of questions, I'd recommend really reflecting on your personal strengths and weaknesses.

What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?

  • Get along with your fellow candidates, especially on Selection Day. It's important to view them as teammates rather than competitors.
  • Reflect on feedback given during the Selection Day, understand why that feedback was given and ways you could improve.
  • Understand it's OK if you can't reach a final answer for a problem during an interview. The approach to and clarity in relaying your solution is just as important.

Climate adaptation case studies can help boost know-how across Europe

Press release Published 26 Jun 2024

While European countries have made considerable progress in putting in place policies to adapt to climate change, the pace and scale of adaptation actions need to increase and widen to cover more areas like the health, agriculture, and forestry sectors. A European Environment Agency (EEA) review of the EU’s Climate-ADAPT online platform, published today, shows that sharing examples of adaptation actions can boost learning across the EU, Member States as well as regional and local authorities to help societies better prepare for climate change.

The Climate-ADAPT platform , which is maintained by the EEA, targets governmental decision-makers as well as the organisations supporting them in the development, implementation, and evaluation of climate change adaptation strategies, plans and actions at all governance levels in Europe. The platform currently includes 134 case studies for learning and to inspire action.

According to the new EEA briefing ' Preparing society for climate risks in Europe — lessons and inspiration from Climate-ADAPT case studies' , the recently published European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA) stressed the need to scale up adaptation measures and actions across all policy sectors and governance levels to address escalating climate risks like extreme heat, drought, wildfires and flooding.

While Climate-ADAPT case studies cover many risks, gaps remain in practical examples that showcase adaptation in some specific risks under the food, and economy and finance risk areas. New perspectives for developing case studies for other key vulnerable sectors (such as forestry), for governance levels (such as transnational case studies to address cross-border impacts) and for some European regions and the outermost regions of Europe are also under consideration.

Preparing society for climate risks in Europe - lessons and inspiration from Climate-ADAPT case studies

Case studies play a key role for learning

The EEA is encouraging EEA Member States which often have national case studies to help fill these gaps by sharing more examples of adaptation actions and initiatives that can serve to build knowledge and experiences and serve as inspiration. Showcasing these case studies on Climate-ADAPT helps users to explore the co-benefits and potential trade-offs of adaptation measures . They also highlight the need for enhanced monitoring, evaluation and learning to assess the effectiveness of these actions and prevent adaptation failures.

The EEA briefing notes that the future development of Climate-ADAPT case studies will focus on addressing specific risks identified by the EUCRA . Cooperation between EEA Member States will be crucial to upgrade the Climate-ADAPT case studies and to share practical learning experiences, including best practices, across Europe.

Climate-ADAPT webinar

The EEA briefing is being launched to coincide with the 15 th Climate-ADAPT Webinar ‘Informing the new EU policy framework through Climate-ADAPT’ , to be held online on 26 June, 10.00-11.30 CEST.

This event is to show how Climate-ADAPT informs the upcoming EU policy framework on adaptation to climate change in the coming years.
