Historical Writing and the Revival of Narrative

Beginning in 1979, not coincidentally the year the first Pulitzer was awarded for feature writing, British historian Lawrence Stone heralded the revival of narrative in academic history writing. The story was back. Stone defined narrative as the organization of material in a chronologically sequential order and focusing the content into a single, coherent story. Now this represented a departure from common historical writing and should give you a sense of just how inhospitable to plot that genre had become.

Unlike structural or scientific history, which is analytical, narrative history, for Stone, is descriptive. From most historians’ point of view, to call a piece of writing “descriptive” is the worst kind of damnation. But far from lamenting descriptive narratives, Stone celebrated them. Narrative history, he suggested, is by no means lacking in interpretation, so long as it’s directed by what Stone called a “pregnant principle.”

Stories with pregnant principles are hard to write and especially difficult to write artfully. Many narrative histories written by academics take readers on sea-sickening sails that endlessly tack back and forth between story and argument. How to tell a story that does more than describe what happened is not immediately obvious, at least to most academic historians.

The problem for historians, Burke suggested, is making a narrative thick enough to deal not only with the sequence of events and the conscious intentions of the actors in these events, but also with structures, institutions, modes of thought, whether these structures act as a brake on the events or as an accelerator.

In practice, since the 1960’s thick narratives with pregnant principles have often taken the form of what historians somewhat ambivalently call “micro-histories”: stories about a single, usually very ordinary person, place or event, that seek to reveal the society’s broader structures. This work rests on the central premise that ordinary lives, thickly described, illuminate culture best.

Telling small stories, writing micro-histories, does not inevitably produce important scholarship. Just the opposite, alas, is far likelier. As Peter Burke warned, “The reduction in scale does not thicken a narrative by itself.” When micro-histories are good, they’re breathtakingly brilliant. When they’re bad, they’re pretty much worthless.

Now consider the history of journalism. If 20th century academic historians turned their backs on storytelling in the early part of the century, only to return to it in the late 1970’s, journalists trudged along a similar path. They scorned storytelling in favor of fact-finding, and then changed their minds.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, according to journalist Jon Franklin, the best American writers, reporters included, began their careers and received their literary training writing short stories. The short story in its heyday was the universal school for writers, Franklin argues. The short story demanded the utmost of the writer, both technically and artistically. It served as the great eliminator of mediocre talent. When short story writers turned to reporting, they brought a desk drawer full of literary devices, an economy of prose, an eye for detail, an ear for dialogue, and a keen sense of plot and resolution.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s Franklin asserts, “The quality of journalistic writing was devastated by the demise of the short story apprenticeship. When journalism turned away from literature, newspaper and magazine writing lost its luster. Nonfiction wasn’t as good a training ground as the short story had been because it emphasized subject over form and rewarded reporting skills at the expense of writing technique.”

But when “In Cold Blood” was published in 1965, it melded the accuracy of nonfiction with the dramatic force of fiction and ushered in the new genre of nonfiction—a genre that today dwells in a foggy frontier between journalism and literature.

A few critical insights. The revival of narrative in historical writing parallels the emergence of narrative journalism. In narrative history’s most celebrated invention, the micro-history, there is a passing resemblance to narrative journalism’s favorite form, the nonfiction short story.

Micro-histories and nonfiction short stories have a good deal in common. Both genres emerged in the 1970’s in response to professional trends, especially prevalent in the 1950’s, that valued accuracy and analysis more than literary flair. Micro-history and the much-vaunted revival of narrative in historical writing were responses to structural or quantitative history. Narrative journalism and the nonfiction short story were reactions against investigative journalism’s emphasis on fact-finding over prose style.

Both micro-histories and nonfiction short stories tend to concern themselves with the everyday experiences of ordinary people; a means of offering broader cultural interpretations, moving from events to structures. Both genres selfconsciously employ the techniques of dramatic fiction, including character development, plotting and conflict resolution. Most micro-historians and narrative journalists aspire to write narratives thickened with the butter of detail and the flour of implication.

Micro-histories and nonfiction short stories also fall prey to the same dangers. Peter Burke considered small stories’ greatest pitfall to be their tendency to focus attention on the sensational. Both academics writing micro-histories and journalists writing nonfiction short stories are drawn to the drama of murder trials, suicides, kidnapping, rapes and other miscellaneous crimes and disasters.

It’s easy to push this parallel too far. Crucial differences separate these two genres. Micro-histories are not non-fiction short stories; they are micro in focus, not in length. Journalists sometimes write about the past, but most narrative journalism, of course, is not historical.

Still, the similarities are intriguing and they raise a key question. If narrative history and narrative journalism use similar devices, consider similar subjects, and are the consequence of related trends in the politics and the arts, why then are historians and journalists not on better terms? It must be said that a great deal of the animosity so commonly expressed by academic historians towards popular history boils down to this: History books are selling like hot cakes, but journalists are making all the money.

To be fair, most historians have few intellectual objections to a rattling good history, so long as the story is told in the service of an argument. Often it isn’t. In 1992 Peter Burke warned that the revival of narrative might lead to a return to pure antiquarianism; to storytelling for its own sake. Part of what grates academic historians is that many popular histories are, from their point of view, actually miscarried micro-histories. That is, they tell a small story but fail to use that story to interpret larger historical structures. At their worst, popular histories are all headlines. They gesture at significance but fail to demonstrate it.

Far from thickly narrating a life, the worst popular histories also tend to rip people out of the past and stick them to the present. These people from different places and times, they’re just like us, only dead. Bad popular history, like bad historical novels and films, manages at once to exoticize the past. Descriptions of clothes, hairstyles, houses and the minutia of daily life are always lovingly recreated while rendering familiar the people who lived in it. Fashions changed, but complicated, historically specific ideas like sovereignty or progress or childhood magically transcend history.

It’s just this kind of writing that [Princeton University historian] Sean Wilentz condemns as passive nostalgic spectacle. But is narrative and are journalists to blame? Since both historians and journalists have embraced narrative, the line between scholarly and popular writing is now much more difficult to discern. Truman Capote is not responsible for David McCullough, but he’s not irrelevant, either.

Much history today is written under the banner of narrative. Does it inevitably render its readers passive? No, but perhaps it should. One kind of passivity, or maybe we should call it enthrallment, is a measure of success. Readers can be nearly paralyzed by compelling stories confidently told. In the hands of a good narrator, readers can be lulled into alternating states of wonder and agreement.

Storytelling is not a necessary evil in the writing of history. It’s a necessary good. Using stories to make historical arguments makes sense, because it gives a writer greater power over her reader. A writer who wants to can pummel his reader into passivity, but a writer who wants to challenge his reader betters his odds to success by telling a story.

This book brings together nearly all of the author's uncollected essays from the last two decades of his life, revealing a lesser-known side: that of the public intellectual. From modern patriotism and European identity to Hannah Arendt's writings on totalitarianism, from the idea of the historical museum and the theme of melancholy in art history to trenchant readings of Leo Tolstoy and Primo Levi, the first volume of the book shows the author at his most engaging, topical, and capacious. Introduced by the editor, who explains the major themes, sources, and frames of reference of the author's thought, the volume features five previously unpublished lectures, as well as more complete versions of several published essays, thereby giving the reader unique access to the author's late thought. What is a narrative essay?

When writing a narrative essay, one might think of it as telling a story. These essays are often anecdotal, experiential, and personal—allowing students to express themselves in a creative and, quite often, moving ways.

Here are some guidelines for writing a narrative essay.

  • If written as a story, the essay should include all the parts of a story.

This means that you must include an introduction, plot, characters, setting, climax, and conclusion.

  • When would a narrative essay not be written as a story?

A good example of this is when an instructor asks a student to write a book report. Obviously, this would not necessarily follow the pattern of a story and would focus on providing an informative narrative for the reader.

  • The essay should have a purpose.

Make a point! Think of this as the thesis of your story. If there is no point to what you are narrating, why narrate it at all?

  • The essay should be written from a clear point of view.

It is quite common for narrative essays to be written from the standpoint of the author; however, this is not the sole perspective to be considered. Creativity in narrative essays oftentimes manifests itself in the form of authorial perspective.

  • Use clear and concise language throughout the essay.

Much like the descriptive essay, narrative essays are effective when the language is carefully, particularly, and artfully chosen. Use specific language to evoke specific emotions and senses in the reader.

  • The use of the first person pronoun ‘I’ is welcomed.

Do not abuse this guideline! Though it is welcomed it is not necessary—nor should it be overused for lack of clearer diction.

  • As always, be organized!

Have a clear introduction that sets the tone for the remainder of the essay. Do not leave the reader guessing about the purpose of your narrative. Remember, you are in control of the essay, so guide it where you desire (just make sure your audience can follow your lead).

Histories and stories: narration in historiography.

The place and credibility of narrative history is often questioned within the historical discipline. This discussion, however, stems from a far older, still ongoing dispute. While examining the existing scholarship one can recognise a common belief that the opposite of narrative history is scientific history. As societies progress through time, their perception of the past changes – and so does the perception of history. The question of whether History is to be classified as a scientific or an artistic discipline has plagued academics for at least two centuries. It is necessary to acknowledge the complexity of the term ‘science’ as its inherent meaning have changed over time. In this essay, the history that is referred to as ‘scientific’ is regarded as concise, factual, and following firmly established methodological and epistemological principles. Rather than discuss this long-disputed question I shall phrase it less diplomatically and offer my perspective upon it.

What is it about narrative history that academic historians find problematic?

This article will attempt to respond to the found problems. I shall discuss the semantical differences between the key concepts and examine the relationship of each to the historical discipline. I will also examine the nineteenth-century German model of history and the linguistic turn. I propose that the most problematic aspects of narrative history involve primacy of interpretation, ‘invention’ andemplotment. Emplotment can be summarised as identifying a connection between a sequence of events (simply put, developing a plot), and the question of ‘feeling’ and ‘emotions’. I will argue that these elements donot contribute a substantial disadvantage.

Narrativity: Semantics

In the English language there is a clear distinction between the words ‘history’ and ‘story’, so it is often taken for granted that these terms are at least different if not opposite. The Russian language, however, does not offer such a visible distinction: the word istoriya means both ‘history’ and ‘story’ and is used extensively in both contexts. The Spanish word historia works in a similar manner. Even if this is a purely linguistic issue and there is no specific reason for a clear contrast between these words, it nonetheless makes one consider their meanings. Moreover, in the Russian language there is no difference between the words ‘science’ and ‘humanities’ in the semantical sense. The technical sciences are evidently named tekhnicheskiye nauki, while the humanities are called gumanitarniye nauki , i.e. humanitarian sciences. The word for ‘science’ ( nauka ), therefore, applies both to the humanities and the technical sciences. The English word that would be the closest in its meaning to the science=humanities would be ‘studies’. Thus, the difference between the concept of ‘history’ and ‘story’ are not uniform when applied to several languages.

Narrativity: Distinctions

After examining the application in foreign languages, it is therefore logical enough to discuss the meanings of the terms in the English language. A story may be fictional and involve a clear narrative with a beginning and an end. History, however, is considered an academic discipline, where most believe that even if there is a beginning and an end, they are inconceivable to humanity. Nevertheless, while the English language treats the two terms as substantially different, there are certain aspects in each that correspond and overlap with each other, thus undermining the criticism of narrative history as a methodology or a subdiscipline.

Narrativity in history is directly linked to interpretation. This corresponds with the scientific/artistic discipline dispute. Leopold von Ranke, for example, wrote in the nineteenth century: ‘A strict presentation of the facts, contingent and unattractive as that may be, is the highest law’. He stressed the significance of facts – and yet for him historical truth could be discovered through intuition and interpretation: ‘History must be science and art at the same time’. While he was considered ‘the father of scientific history’, he nevertheless believed that ‘re-creation’, so essential in historical methodology, made history an art. Johann Droysen shared Ranke’s belief in the essentiality of intuition. However, he encouraged scholars to pursue moral judgements and apply them to their society; subjectivity was necessary. Therefore, while scholars of the ‘German model’ of the nineteenth century have attempted to proclaim history as ‘scientific’, they found it difficult to refrain from ideological judgements in the context of German nationalism, undermining the concept of a purely factual and ‘true’ history.

Interpretation: metahistory, metanarrative

Scholars of the twentieth century continued the dichotomy discourse. The emergence of cultural history initiated by the Annales school diversified methodological processes. The Annales historians searched for a scientific method to analyse human behaviour and claimed narrative history to be ‘non-scientific’ and ‘ideological’. The linguistic turn reinforced the discussion regarding the place of narrativity in historiography. For example, Robert Berkhofer writes that “normal” history’s objective is to produce an “accurate representation of an actual past”and compares such to maps and photographs. Neither of these, however, can ever provide an accurate representation. Depending on the scale, a map only represents a portion of the wider reality; a continent map does not show the suburbs, suburban maps do not show the continent. A photograph is merely a fragment separated from its surroundings. Similarly, history cannot represent ‘an actual past’ as there is no clear metanarrative, no universal explanation and interpretation of life that we have agreed upon. Hans Kellner argues that to comprehend history, one must look for a ‘crooked’ rather than a ‘straight’ picture; contemplation broadens the horizon. He states that narration frees history from ‘the legitimating authority of factuality’. Thus, the absence of a clear subject in history (‘an actual past’), in contrast to science, encourages historians to create a narrative, developing new interpretations and perspectives.

Narrativity: emplotment

The discourse leads to the issue of emplotment. For Hayden White, to acknowledge the plot of the historical narrative is to acknowledge the issues raised by the discourse. If one dismisses narrative history’s significance, one also dismisses the impact literature and poetry (culture) have upon the perceptions of reality. Roland Barthes agrees with White that with no narrative, history would be a collection of unrelated facts, like annals. For White, a purely ‘scientific’, value-free language of history is void of attempts to analyse culture’s shaping of perceptions. In history, events are value-free; interpretation is not. Narrativity connects unstructured events through allegory and encodation(providing the information with a meaning). Therefore, the plot contributes to the search for ‘truth’ for history through interpretation, which is a fundamental aspect of historical methodology and therefore should not be discouraged within the discipline.

Narrativity: Emotion and Feeling

Perhaps no one will be willing to deny that one of the main components of an engaging story is conflict. In relation to narrativity, conflict is an antithesis of stagnation. It is a constant catalyst that moves the world and its characters forward. What, then, is the other essential component without which any story would be a lifeless accumulation of events? Without any doubt, that would be emotion. There is plenty of conflict throughout history, that no one will refute; one must merely note the amount of scholarship written concerning war or any political, social, or religious turmoil. Emotion, however, has a much more complex position within the historical discipline.

Most academics are anxious to explore emotions of the past and fear that their arguments would not be substantial and will be treated with scepticism by fellow historians. ‘Biased’, ‘subjective’, ‘speculative’ – these are the words one might associate with involving the study of emotion in history. It is common knowledge that a historian cannot be affected by emotions and must remain objective in their analysis. The overall perception of emotion in history became negative once historians emphasised the essentiality of objectivity.

Moreover, the history of emotions is often dismissed as too speculative or circumstantial. This further relates to an issue of involving literary sources as evidence in historical research. Literary research concerns not only emotions, but also such complex terms as honour, shame, or beauty. The belief that fictional evidence cannot be used deteriorates the research significantly and limits the possible perspectives and interpretations. Neither secondary nor primary evidence can be studied separated from surrounding historiographical context. Literature forms an essential part of the culture and can provide fundamental information regarding contemporary ideology, intellectual thought, popular culture, esoteric writing, or social, economic, and political culture. One must learn to interpret such texts and apply them to discovered historical evidence. Therefore, interpretation forms a highly significant part of historical scholarship and thus cannot be disregarded as a disadvantage of narrative history or of history in general.

It is thus evident that narration constitutes a fundamental quality of the historical discipline, whether it is ‘scientific’ history, narrative history or, for example, microhistory – a relatively recent subdiscipline in which narrativity plays an essential role. Since the nineteenth century scholars have been struggling to proclaim history as purely factual and scientific. Even Ranke acknowledged the primacy of interpretation for the discipline. Interpretation became more complex with the emergence of new studies. Modern Joint degrees and interdisciplinary courses allow students to explore new epistemology and methodology. History coupled with Sociology might be more scientific than coupled with English.

Additionally, it became increasingly challenging to establish an all-applicable methodology with the emergence of such subdisciplines as history of emotions or of mental health. This further provided a wider scope of possibility and flexibility in applying interpretation. Narrativity, in turn, became essential to the interpretation to ‘connect the dots’ and provide numerous unique perspectives. One must be aware that the historical ‘search for truth’ has no visible termination point. History has no expiration date: there is no universal truth to be found. It is thus a continuous and constantly reshaping development that historians should embrace.

You may also need to write them later in life when applying for jobs and describing your past experiences.

However, this isn’t the only type of narrative essay. There are also fictional narrative essays that you can write using your imagination, and various subject specific narrative essays that you might have come across without even realizing it.

So, it’s worth knowing about the different types of narrative essays and what they each focus on before we move on to how to write them.

Before we start, it’s worth pointing out that most narrative essays are written in the first-person. Through the use of first-person perspective, you get to connect with the reader, offering a glimpse into your thoughts, reactions, and the significance of the story being shared.

Write your plot

If you want to tell a compelling story you need a good plot. Your plot will give your story a structure. Every good story includes some kind of conflict. You should start with setting the scene for readers. After this, you introduce a challenge or obstacle. Readers will keep reading until the end to find out how you managed to overcome it.

Your story should reach a climax where tension is highest. This will be the turning point that leads to a resolution. For example, moving outside of your comfort zone was difficult and scary. It wasn’t easy at first but eventually, you grew braver and more confident. Readers should discover more about who you are as a person through what they read.

A seasoned writer knows how to craft a story that connects with an audience and creates an impact.

Hook readers with your introduction

In your introduction, you will introduce the main idea of your essay and set the context. Ways to make it more engaging are to:

  • Use sensory images to describe the setting in which your story takes place.
  • Use a quote that illustrates your main idea.
  • Pose an intriguing question.
  • Introduce an unexpected fact or a statement that grabs attention.

Develop your characters

You need to make readers feel they know any characters you introduce in your narrative essay. You can do this by revealing their personalities and quirks through the actions they take. It is always better to show the actions of characters rather than giving facts about them. Describing a character’s body language and features can also reveal a great deal about the person. Use dialogue

Dialogue can bring your narrative essay to life. Most fiction books use dialogue extensively . It helps to move the story along in a subtle way. When you allow characters to talk, what they have to say seems more realistic. You can use similes , metaphors, and other parts of speech to make your story more compelling. Just make sure the dialogue is written clearly with the right punctuation so readers understand exactly who is talking.

Work on the pace of the story

Your story must flow along at a steady pace. If there’s too much action, readers may get confused. If you use descriptive writing, try not to overdo it. The clear, concise language throughout will appeal to readers more than lengthy descriptions.

Build up towards a climax

This is the point at which the tension in your story is the highest. A compelling climax takes readers by surprise. They may not have seen it coming. This doesn’t mean your climax should come out of left field. You need to carefully lead up to it step by step and guide readers along. When you reveal it they should be able to look back and realize it’s logical.

Cut out what you don’t need

Your story will suffer if you include too much detail that doesn’t move your story along. It may flow better once you cut out some unnecessary details. Most narrative essays are about five paragraphs but this will depend on the topic and requirements.

In a narrative essay, you share your experiences and insights. The journey you take your readers on should leave them feeling moved or inspired. It takes practice to learn how to write in a way that causes this reaction. With a good plot as your guide, it’s easier to write a compelling story that flows toward a satisfying resolution.

Narrative Introductions

The introduction of a narrative essay sets the scene for the story that follows. Interesting introductions—for any kind of writing—engage and draw readers in because they want to know more.

Since narratives tell a story and involve events, the introduction of a narrative quite often starts in the middle of the action in order to bring the reader into the story immediately, as shown in examples 1, 3, and 5 below. Other effective introductions briefly provide background for the point of the story—often the lesson learned—as in 4 below and the first example on the reverse side.

Below are some strategies for writing effective openings. Remember your introduction should be interesting and draw your reader in. It should make your audience want to read more. If it's a person , begin with a description of the person and then say why that person mattered. If it's an event , begin with the action or begin by reflecting back on why the event mattered, then go into the narrative.

  • "Potter...take off!" my coach yelled as I was cracking yet another joke during practice.
  • Why do such a small percentage of high school athletes play Division One sports?
  • It was a cold, rainy night, under the lights on the field. I lined up the ball on the penalty line under the wet grass. After glancing up at the tied score, I stared into the goalkeeper's eyes.
  • My heart pounds in my chest. My stomach full of nervous butterflies. I hear the crowd talking and names being cheered.
  • Slipping the red and white uniform over my head for the first time is a feeling I will never forget.
  • "No football." Those words rang in my head for hours as I thought about what a stupid decision I had made three nights before.
  • "SNAP!" I heard the startling sound of my left knee before I ever felt the pain.
  • According to the NCAA, there are over 400,000 student-athletes in the United States.

Narrative Story

  • Unified: Ensure all actions in your story develop a central idea or argument.
  • Interesting: Draw your readers into your scene(s), making them feel as if they're experiencing them first-hand.
  • Coherent: Indicate changes in time, location, and characters clearly (even if your story is not chronological).
  • Climactic: Include a moment (the climax) when your ending is revealed or the importance of events is made clear.
  • Remember the 5 W's : Who? What? When? Where? Why?
  • Write vividly : Include significant sensory information in the scene (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste) to make readers feel they are there
  • Develop " Thick Descriptions "

Clifford Geertz describes thick descriptions as accounts that include not only facts but also commentary and interpretation . The goal is to vividly describe an action or scene, often through the use of metaphors, analogies, and other forms of interpretation that can emote strong feelings and images in your readers' minds.

Narrative Checklist

  • Does the story have a clear and unifying idea? If not, what could that idea be?
  • If the story doesn't include a thesis sentence, is the unifying idea of the story clear without it?
  • Is the story unified, with all the details contributing to the central idea?
  • Is the story arranged chronologically? If not, is the organization of ideas and events still effective and clear?
  • Do the transitions show the movement from idea to idea and scene to scene?
  • Are there enough details?
  • Is there dialogue at important moments?
  • Is there a climax to the story—moment at which the action is resolved or a key idea is revealed?
