A few days back, on 2nd October, we celebrated Mahatma Gandhiji’s 151st birth anniversary. A few days from now falls the death anniversary of India's only woman, Indira Gandhi. So October is a historical month for India, so I decided to write about India's most historical speeches for this October post.

I present to you a summary of the book India’s Greatest Sp eeches by presenting 25 excerpts from the most memorable speeches of most prominent Indian personalities, aka torchbearers from the fields of politics, sports, corporate sector, Bollywood, and Arts. Needless to say I loved the book and rate it 5 stars out of 5. 

All the speeches are chronologically ordered, starting from 1893 to 2014, in very recent times. The saying, Old is gold holds to these greatest public speeches, and they remain relevant even today in the 21st century. These speeches' beauty is that other than being spoken by remarkable personalities, they mark historical moments; Moments that changed India, moments that make us proud to be an Indian.

Each of these persuasive agendas has a unique voice, a unique topic, and a unique message. What is common to all of them is the patriotic brilliance each of them portrays. Each of the speakers has a love for their motherland that shines through and dazzles the readers. These oratory wonders are set to inspire and stir. Some of them are victory speeches, some farewell, some leadership speeches, some are like memoirs, some are motivational and inspirational, but all of them are good speeches.

1. Swami Vivekananda - 1893 – The Chicago Address – Opening Day

In this best-known speech given on September 11, Swami Vivekananda represented Hinduism and India. The start of his speech “Sisters and Brothers of America” was received in a two-minute standing ovation by the several thousand audiences.

2. Mahatma Gandhi – 1912 – Banaras Hindu University Speech

The Father of the Nation isn’t unknown to anyone, neither in India nor abroad. Such was his influence and reach that some addressed him as the one-man-army during India’s freedom struggle. In this speech, Gandhiji addresses the young college students and talks about language as a reflection of self and appeals to the students to accept Hindia gracefully rather than mastering a foreign language. Annie Besant was also present on the stage.

Every Indian youth, because he reached his knowledge through the English language, lost at least six precious years of life. Multiply that by the numbers of students turned out by our schools and colleges, and find out for yourselves how many thousand years have been lost to the nation. The charge against us is that we have no initiative. How can we have any, if we are to devote the precious years of our life to the mastery of a foreign tongue?

3. Mahatma Gandhi – 1922 – The Great Trial of 1922

Mahatma Gandhi always valued and promoted non-violence in India's freedom struggle against the British. This particular speech demonstrates the win of faith over brute force and marks a defining moment in India’s fight to freedom.

I wanted to avoid violence. Non-violence is the first article of my faith. It is also the last article of my creed. But I had to make my choice. I had either to submit to a system which I considered had done an irreparable harm to my country, or incur the risk of the mad fury of my people bursting forth when they understood the truth from my lips.

4. Shaheed Bhagat Singh – 1930 – Statement before the Lahore Court Bench

The name prompts the slogan Inquilab Zindabad (Long Live Revolution) in our minds. Accused in the Lahore conspiracy case, Bhagat Singh attempts to explain the aim and spirit behind his team’s actions through this speech. But at the age of twenty-three, he was convicted and subsequently executed on 23 March 1931.

The point is very important in this case. The point is as to what were our intentions sand to what extent we are guilty. This is a very complicated question and no one will be able to express before you that height to mental elevation which inspired us to think and act in a particular manner. We want that this should be kept in mind while assessing our intentions our offence. According to the famous jurist Solomon, one should not be punished for his criminal offence if his aim is not against law.

5. V.D. Savarkar – 1937 – Presidential Address – Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha

Known as the man who survived the brutal “Kala Pani” imprisonment in the central jail in Port Blair, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, talks about Hinduism, its definition, what it stands for, its elements, and the movement of the Hindu Mahasabha aimed at national unity.

Hindusthan is a Fatherland and Holyland to us not because it is a land entirely unlike any other land in the world but because it is associated with our history, has been the home of our forefathers, wherein our mothers gave us the first suckle at their breast. Our fathers cradled us on their knees from generation to generation.

6. Rabindranath Tagore – 1941 – Civilization’s Crisis, The Last Testament of Tagore

A noted scholar, Tagore won the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 1913. He changed the face of Bengali literature and music. In this reflective and influential speech, he expresses disappointment and dismay over the state of affairs around him.

As I look back on the vast stretch of years that lie behind me and see in clear perspective the history of my early development, I am struck by the change that has taken place both in my own attitude and in the psychology of my countrymen -- a change that carries within it a cause of profound tragedy.

7. Subhas Chandra Bose – 1944 – Give Me Blood and I Promise You Freedom

President of the Indian National Congress from 1937 to 1940, Subhas Chandra Bose was an extremist. These values of using force against the British disagreed with Mahatama Gandhiji and eventually led to a split in the Congress. His death in a plane crash over Japan in 1945 was controversial as his body was never recovered.

We should have but one desire today- the desire to die so that India may live- the desire to face a martyr’s death, so that the path to freedom may be paved with the martyr’s blood. Friends! my comrades in the War of Liberation! Today I demand you one thing, above all. I demand of you blood. It is blood alone that can avenge the blood that the enemy has spilt. It is blood alone that can pay the price of freedom. Give me blood and I promise you freedom .

8. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan – 1947 – Speech as First Vice-President of Independent India

We cannot celebrate 5th September – Teacher’s day, without fondly remembering this man. His birthday and his belief that teachers are the best minds in the country that we celebrate on this day.

Passion and wisdom never go together.

A free India will be judged by the way in which it will serve the interest of the common man in the matter of food, clothing, shelter and the social services.

Concord is the only way by which we can get rid of differences.

9. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru – 1947 – Tryst with Destiny

Tryst with Destiny, one of the greatest speeches of all times, was delivered by Nehruji on the eve of India’s Independence, at the stroke of midnight as Independent India's first Prime Minister in New Delhi.

The appointed day has come - the day appointed by destiny - and India stands forth again after long slumber and struggle, awake, vital, free, and independent. The past clings on to us still in some measure, and we have to do much before we redeem the pledges we have so often taken. Yet the turning point is past, and history begins anew for us, the history which we shall live and act and others will write about.

10. Sardar Vallabhai Patel – 1949 – Calcutta Maidan

The “Iron Man of India” was one of the Republic of India's founding fathers. He speaks about Kashmir, Junagadh, Pakistan, and the partition.

But let me be clear on one point. We aren’t going to give up Kashmir. Not now. Not ever.

What I don’t understand, is how can their minds change overnight and their loyalties altered? Now that they declare loyalty to us, and question us on our suspicions of Muslims, we say why question us? You should look within yourself and ask the same question.

Let Pakistan develop; let it become good as heaven. Make it strong and robust. We as neighboirs stand to benefit from it.

I want to emphasize this gain and again that neither do we have animosity towards them, nor do we want to build it. They should live and let live. Let us be.

11. Pandit Deendayal Updhyay – 1965 – Lecture on Integral Humanism

One of the most influential leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Sangh, the present-day Bharatiya Janata Party, Pandit Deendayal Upadhaya, was known to have the highest personal standards integrity. He coined the concept of Integral Humanism and economic model with human beings as the center.

So long as the country was under the yoke of the British rule, all the movements and policies in the country had one principal ‘aim to drive out the foreign rulers and to achieve independence’. But what would be the face of the new Bharat after independence? In which direction were we to advance?

If we stop to analyze the reasons for the problems facing the country we will find that the confusion about our goal and the direction is mainly responsible for the chaos.

12. Mother Teresa – 1979 – Novel Peace Prize Acceptance

Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Mother Teresa, in her acceptance speech, speaks of love as a great power, and how it is what everyone, especially the poor, needs. She has dedicated her life to the sick, the hungry, and the poor.

Lord, make me a channel of your peace, that where there is hatred, I may bring love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where there is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope; that where there are shadows, I may bring light; that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

13. JRD Tata – 1982 – Historic Flight Re-enactment

JRD Tata was the chairman of India’s most prominent corporate conglomerate, the Tata Sons, which grew from 14 enterprises to 95 businesses under his leadership ability. The receiver of Bharat Ratna in 1922, in this powerful speech, he addresses the youth and appeals to them to have a spirit of adventure and enthusiasm.

When you talk to young people today, their main worry is to get a job. I don’t blame them. Its is a real worry. But also, there seems no longer to be a feeling that we can do thaings as well or better than others or even things that others haven’t done. So I thought that, perhaps, this flight would rekindle a spark of enthusiasm, a desire to do something for the country and its good name, an that it would show that even in these days, when aviation is no longer an adventure but only big business, the times for pioneering are not gone.

14. Indira Gandhi - 1984 – Her Last Speech

The iron lady of India and India's fourth PM was assassinated a day after delivering this speech by her bodyguards. The speech has an eerie resonation, for it seems that she knowingly or unknowingly prophesized her death in the speech.

No outsider will take care of our interest or think about us. We have to look after ourselves. This is not exclusively my responsibility. I am here today; I may not be here tomorrow. But the responsibility to look after national interest is on the shoulder of every citizen of India.

15. Atal Bihari Vajpayee – 2001 – United Nations General Assembly Speech

This speech of India's most respected PM from 1998 to 2004 was given in the background of the historic and terrifying 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington DC.

This session of the General Assembly is being held in the shadow of the barbaric terrorist acts of September 11, which dramatically reminded us that neither distance nor power insulates a State from terrorism.

The two crucial elements in this would be strict curbs on sources of financing for terrorists and denying them safe havens for training, arming and operation.

Mr. President, nearly six thousand lives were lost on September 11. But the global economic downturn in its aftermath will take a far larger human toll, mainly in the developing world. The World Bank has estimated that tens of thousands more children will die worldwide and some ten million more people are likely to go below the poverty line of 1 dollar a day. It is pertinent to reflect on these chilling statistics even as the Ministerial Conference gets under way in Doha to consider WTO issues.

16. Narayan Murthy – 2007 – Pre-commencement Address at New York University

Described as the Father of the Indian IT, in this speech Narayan Murthy emphasizes the importance of chance events, crisis situations, and facing failures to pave the way to shaping one’s life.

I would like first to share some of these key life events with you, in the hope that these may help you understand my struggles and how chance events and unplanned encounters with influential persons shaped my life and career.

Valuable advice can sometimes come from an unexpected source, and chance events can sometimes open new doors.

Life Lessons:

It is less important, I believe, where you start. It is more important how and what you learn.

It is this very quality of how we respond systematically to chance events that is crucial.

The latter view, a growth mindset, leads to a tendency to embrace

challenges, to learn from criticism and such people reach ever higher levels of achievement.

I believe this greater awareness and knowledge of oneself is what ultimately helps develop a more grounded belief in oneself, courage, determination, and, above all, humility, all qualities which enable one to wear one’s success with dignity and grace.

17. Vishwanathan Anand – 2007 - Speech at NIIT, Chennai

India’s first grandmaster was World Chess Champion five times and the recipient of the Padma Vibhushan. This simple speech gives us a perspective into the game of chess and provides valuable suggestions of improving to anyone in any field.

Soon after winning the most exalted title a sportsperson can aspire to, World Champion, came the vacuum. What was the next big thing?

It is extremely difficult to change a wiining formula, but one has to experiment even when you succeed. Defeat gives you the courage to experiment. Success can never motivate you the same way.

18. AR Rahman – 2009 – Oscar Awards Acceptance

Probably the shortest speech in the history of the Oscars, the Mozart of Madras, and the man who redefined contemporary Indian music after winning a historic award had nothing more to say than thank his mother and thank the Almighty God.

This shows that even the greatest can be the humblest, most straightforward people at the peak of their very best.

19. APJ Abdul Kalam – 2011 – Vision for India

Former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, has authored several inspirational books – Wings of Fire , Ignited Minds and India 2020 . Awarded the Bharat Ratna, he was titled the people’s president due to his distinctive working style and fondness for children. Here he speaks about the wonder that India is and compels us to see it through his eyes.

Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why? We are the first in milk production.We are number one in Remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice. Look at Dr. Sudarshan; he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

20. Abhinav Bindra – 2013 – GoSPorts Foundation Conclave

Known for his sharpshooting bull’s eye skills, Abhinav Bindra shares the secret of his focus in this speech. He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2001 and the Arjuna award in 2000 at 17.

So how does a boy who is neither talented nor athletic become both World and Olympic champion? The answer is a four-letter word; in fact, it is two four-letter words: HARD WORK.

I was tenacious. I hung on despite disappointments.

I was stubborn as a mule. I refused to give up.

I believed in myself. And when my belief in myself faltered, I had the sense to listen to my team – my family and coaches – who believed in me for me.

When people ask me what helped me win gold, this is what I say to them. “I slogged my guts out – I did it without compromise, when there was no one to see, no one to be impressed. I did it when I did not feel like it. And the reason I did it is: my desire to win was, and is, much greater, than my desire to make excuses or find reasons not to win.

21. Shahrukh Khan – 2013 – Courage in Success

Unless you are living under a rock, you cannot not be familiar with the King Khan, the Badshah of Bollywood. Along with being an actor he is also a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. Known for his witty humor, Shahrukh Khan delivers his childhood and career in heartfelt and touching episodes in this speech.

Being successful does not mean my children will also be so, however much I teach them what all did in my life, and they follow it to the letter. Success just happens, really.

Poverty entails fear and stress and sometimes, depression. It wasn’t out of any creative desire that I signed my films – it was just purely out of the fear of failure and poverty.

Success is never final, just like failure is never fatal. Courage is ill-defined if you think it means doing something macho, risky or chancy. If that happens at somebody else’s cost, it’s even less courageous. Courage is doing whatever you are afraid to do – personally scared to do – in whichever capacity you work. There can be no courage unless you are scared. So be scared to feel courage, be fearful.

22. Sachin Tendulkar – 2013 – A Farewell to Cricket

I share some thoughts on Philanthropy on this occasion. First, involving your family early on in Philanthropy is very important. 25. Narendra Modi – 2014 – Independence Day Speech – After becoming the 15th PM of India

After a historic win in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered this speech from the Red Fort in Delhi. His speech impacts the audience because of his achievable suggestions and concrete solutions. Modiji ideally represents a leader who took over the responsibility of a great nation desperately looking for good leadership.

In order to fulfill the aspirations of the masses, we have to sharpen the tool called “government machinery”, we have to make it keen and it is in this direction that we are working.

Brothers and sisters, development and good governance are the only two tracks to take the country forward. Imagine of 125 crore countrymen move one step forward, then the country moves 125 crore steps forward.

Tourism provides employment to the poorest of the poor. But there is a big obstacle in promoting tourism and in our national character, and that is – the filthiness all around us.

I thank Nitin Agarwal for creating this gem of a compilation. All the references for the speeches have been mentioned at the end of the book. What I loved best about this book is the unique voice Nitin has rendered before each of the addresses telling us the significance of the speech, introducing us to the speaker, and expressing what he found most endearing about the particular elocution. In the beginning of the book, he has also added a summary of the Bhagavad Gita, the most revered religious book in Hinduism.

Good morning,

For the first edition of FF Life this year, we share five speeches delivered by Indians that explore some of the most important questions of our times. They were carefully chosen to represent a range of themes—leadership, defence, science, healthcare, sports and philosophy. The earliest speech in this list—one by Dr BR Ambedkar—was delivered in 1949; and the latest by Dr Soumya Swaminathan was delivered in August 2019 (where she in fact warns about how unprepared we are to face a flu pandemic). But we didn’t pick that because it predicted an important event, but because it touches upon something deeper. In fact, if there is a common thread that binds them all, they highlight the values we need the most today: Courage, thoughtfulness and kindness. 

Soumya Swaminathan on Universal Health Care

In August 2019, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist of World Health Organization, delivered The 13th New India Foundation Annual Girish Karnad Memorial Lecture. Her focus was on universal healthcare. It is worth listening to not because she warned about the pandemic five months ahead of the disruption, but because she took a systems view of healthcare in India. And her observation that India was ill prepared for a pandemic was a part of it.  

She said, “the reality is that in the future, we are going to have more of these unknown unexpected events and diseases. We don't know when the next big pandemic will happen. As you all know, in 1918, we had the last big flu pandemic. It's 100 years now. We lost 50 million people in 1918, which at that time was a huge proportion of the world's population. So the question is, when that will happen, not if, because influenza virus is known to mutate. And so at one day or the other, there will be an influenza strain that's made from strains from chicken, wild birds, from swine, and so on, that is able to not only infect humans, but spread from human to human. And that would be basically the beginning of the next pandemic. 

“So the question of preparing for these kinds of emerging infections, most of them are going to be zoonotic viruses. We know only one or 2% of the viruses that are present in the world. There has been really no global map of viruses. So it could spring up anywhere, anytime. They mutate very rapidly. So the point I am trying to make is that without primary health care services, which include things like disease surveillance, registries, data, monitoring, constant data analysis and monitoring, and having a cadre of trained public health people in every state, in every district, at the sub district level, it would be hard to control. One really dreads to think if something like that gets into overpopulated cities like in India, then it would be very, very hard to contain. So, we have to prepare, because once the event happens, it would probably be too late.” 

The speech is also a reminder why no one should be left behind when it comes to health.

Sam Manekshaw on leadership

There are stories and stories about Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. One of the more famous ones as recounted by him includes the time when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was under enormous pressure from all quarters and insisted the Indian Army march into East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Then a General, Manekshaw declined. The conditions were unfavourable and he hissed back at the Prime Minister that if he led the troops into war, a defeat was guaranteed. Others may have given in and carried out orders. Not Sam Manekshaw. Just how did he stand his ground? He had figured that to be a leader, you equip yourself to be a leader. 

That was the theme of a talk he had given a few years ago at St Xavier’s College in Mumbai. We loved listening to every minute of him speaking. It was a masterclass on the theme.    

“Now, you will agree with me that you cannot be born with professional knowledge even if you are a child of a minister, the son of a member of parliament, or the progeny of a field marshal.

“Professional knowledge has to be acquired the hard way. It is a constant study. Professors, engineers, architects, lawyers, solicitors, doctors; they all study their professions, continuously, they all contribute to magazines, to newsprints, to all sorts of things. But we in India, as soon as we reach positions of power, whether it’s ministerial, secretarial, armed forces, or anywhere else, we think, we are the repository of all knowledge.

“Professional knowledge has to be acquired the hard way, and without professional knowledge, you cannot have professional competence, and if you haven’t got professional competence, you cannot be a leader. 

“I wonder those civilian gentlemen who’ve been charged with the security of this country, whether they have ever read a book on the military profession. I wonder if they know the difference between a gun or a Howitzer. I remember a minister one day coming to me. I’d left being the army chief then and said, and I will talk to you in his own language.”

“Zara batao yeh Hawitzer kya hai ?

“Then I say, what are you talking about, ‘HOWVITZER’, then I discovered what he meant, he meant, a ‘HOWITZER’, and I said, “why are you asking me? Why don’t you ask the army chief and others?

“He said, ‘ Kaise poochen unse, mein minister hoon. Tere se toh pooch leta hoon, tu janta hai ki mein bewakoof hoon .’ (How should I ask them? I am a minister. Though, I can ask you. You already know I am stupid with respect to knowledge regarding the military.)

“I wonder if they can distinguish a ‘mortar’ from a ‘motor’, or a ‘guerrilla’ from a ‘gorilla’, although a great many resemble the latter. Ladies and gentlemen, professional knowledge is a sine qua non [or condicio sine qua non , an indispensable and essential action, condition, or ingredient – Wikipedia] of ‘leadership’, you have to have professional competence, if you are expected to lead anything, it doesn’t matter if you are in the army, whether you are in a teaching profession, whether you are in the industry—unless you have professional competence and professional knowledge, you cannot be a leader, and it has to be acquired the hard way, you’ve got to study all your life.”

Why Babasaheb Ambedkar continues to matter

If there is one book on our wish list that isn’t written yet, it is an exhaustive biography of Dr BR Ambedkar, architect of the Indian Constitution and first Minister of Law and Justice in the cabinet that was sworn in after India gained independence. It is a tribute to the man’s genius and the foresight of the people who fought for India then that they placed their faith in Dr Ambedkar. 

We say this because Babasaheb, as he was fondly called, was born into an India where the caste system was all pervasive and he was born an “untouchable”. That meant, he started life as a schoolboy who carried a gunny sack so he could sit away from other students and carry it back with him. Not much is known of what happened to those who studied with him. But he went on to earn doctorates in economics from Columbia University and LSE. After he returned, he plunged into active politics and went on to make history.

On presenting the Constitution to the Assembly, we believe he made one of the most important speeches in contemporary India.

“… my mind is so full of the future of our country that I feel I ought to take this occasion to give expression to some of my reflections thereon. On 26th January 1950, India will be an independent country (Cheers). What would happen to her independence? Will she maintain her independence or will she lose it again? This is the first thought that comes to my mind. It is not that India was never an independent country. The point is that she once lost the independence she had. Will she lose it a second time? It is this thought which makes me most anxious for the future. What perturbs me greatly is the fact that not only India has once before lost her independence, but she lost it by the infidelity and treachery of some of her own people. 

“Will history repeat itself? It is this thought which fills me with anxiety. This anxiety is deepened by the realization of the fact that in addition to our old enemies in the form of castes and creeds we are going to have many political parties with diverse and opposing political creeds. Will Indians place the country above their creed or will they place creed above country? I do not know. But this much is certain that if the parties place creed above country, our independence will be put in jeopardy a second time and probably be lost for ever. This eventuality we must all resolutely guard against. We must be determined to defend our independence with the last drop of our blood.

“On the 26th of January 1950, India would be a democratic country in the sense that India from that day would have a government of the people, by the people and for the people. The same thought comes to my mind. What would happen to her democratic Constitution? Will she be able to maintain it or will she lose it again? This is the second thought that comes to my mind and makes me as anxious as the first.”

He goes on to describe how Buddhism that traces its lineage to India has a democratic culture. Having done that, he points out, “This democratic system India lost. Will she lose it a second time? I do not know. But it is quite possible in a country like India—where democracy from its long disuse must be regarded as something quite new—there is danger of democracy giving place to dictatorship. It is quite possible for this new-born democracy to retain its form but give place to dictatorship in fact. If there is a landslide, the danger of the second possibility becoming actuality is much greater.” 

But what kind of a democracy was he talking about in a young nation struggling to find a toehold? That concerned him as well. “The third thing we must do is not to be content with mere political democracy. We must make our political democracy a social democracy as well. Political democracy cannot last unless there lies at the base of it social democracy. What does social democracy mean? It means a way of life which recognizes liberty, equality and fraternity as the principles of life. These principles of liberty, equality and fraternity as the principles of life. These principles of liberty, equality and fraternity are not to be treated as separate items in a trinity. They form a union of trinity in the sense that to divorce one from the other is to defeat the very purpose of democracy.”

How may he have sounded while delivering this? We couldn’t find an audio recording of this powerful speech, the import of which continues to resonate today.

Rahul Dravid on Cricket and Life

In December 2011, Rahul Dravid delivered the Sir Donald Bradman Oration at The War Memorial in Canberra, Australia. He was as meticulous on stage as he was on the ground, and every point he made during the speech was widely discussed and debated by the lovers of the game. Towards the end, he spent a few minutes reflecting on what cricket meant to him. It was so authentic and profound, it can give goosebumps even today, a full ten years after he gave the speech.   

“I also want to talk briefly about an experience I have often had over the course of my career. It is not to do with individuals or incidents, but one I believe is important to share. I have sometimes found myself in the middle of a big game, standing at slip or even at the non-strikers end and suddenly realised that everything else has vanished. At that moment, all that exists is the contest and the very real sense of the joy that comes from playing the game.

“It is an almost meditative experience, where you reconnect with the game just like you did years ago, when you first began, when you hit your first boundary, took the first catch, scored your first century, or were involved in a big victory. It lasts for a very fleeting passage of time, but it is a very precious instant and every cricketer should hang on to it.

“I know it is utterly fanciful to expect professional cricketers to play the game like amateurs; but the trick, I believe, is taking the spirit of the amateur—of discovery, of learning, of pure joy, of playing by the rules—into our profession. Taking it to practice or play, even when there’s an epidemic of white-line fever breaking out all over the field.

“In every cricketer there lies a competitor who hates losing, and yes, winning matters. But it is not the only thing that matters when you play cricket. How it is played is as important for every member of every team because every game we play leaves a footprint in cricket’s history. We must never forget that.”

J Krishnamurti on learning about oneself

One of the foremost philosophers of our times, J Krishnamurti’s speeches are not speeches, but conversations, even when he was the only one speaking. The man who famously said “truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect”, makes it a point to remind his fellow conversationalists that they are seeking an answer together. 

As he said in his San Diego public talk in April 1970, “we will go together into this question, bearing in mind that the speaker has no authority whatsoever, because both of us are going to examine, observe, this phenomenon called life, living, and find out the truth of the matter.” 

For Krishnamurti, finding the truth of the matter is about observing… with no judgement whatsoever. And that’s harder than it sounds. Marshall B. Rosenberg once pointed to Krishnamurti’s statement that the highest form of human intelligence is observing without evaluating. “When I first read this statement, the thought, ‘What nonsense!’ shot through my mind before I realized that I had just made an evaluation.” 

In his San Diego speech Krishnamurti says: 

“So, how are you to look at yourself—please do listen to this, it is quite absorbing. It demands a great deal of intelligence, it is great fun, much more fun than any book, than any religious entertainment, than any philosophy. As we are broken up human beings in ourselves, contradictory desires, feeling inferior or superior, being afraid, having no love, feeling lonely, fragmented, not only superficially but deeply—how are you to observe? One fragment observes the rest of the fragments? One becoming the censor, the examiner, the observer, watching over the rest of the fragments? And what gives him the authority over the other fragments? I hope the speaker is making himself clear; unless you understand this really, what we are going to discuss during the rest of the talks you won't be able to follow at all.

“So the question is, who is the observer and who is the censor that says, 'This I will do, this I won't do, this is right and this is wrong, this path I will take and I won't tread that path, I'll be a pacifist with regard to this war but I've other favourite wars, I will follow this leader and not that leader, I believe in this and not in that, I will hold this prejudice and reject that', knowing, if you have observed yourself, that you are a fragmented human being? And therefore, being fragmented, contradictory, living in constant conflict, and knowing this conflict, one fragment of this many, many fragments, takes charge, becomes the authority, the censor, and his observation must inevitably be contradictory. I hope you're following all this. If one fragment, one part of you assumes the authority of the analyser over the other fragments, why has he assumed that authority, and can he, one fragment, analyse the rest of the other fragments? You are following all this?

“See how dreadfully complex it has all become. Whether you are analysed by a professional or you analyse yourself, it is still the same pattern. So it is very important to find out how to observe, how to observe all these many contradictions which make up our life, how to observe the whole of those fragments without another fragment taking place.”

Before her work was recognized, Rowling was a poor single mother who used to teach English at night school and write during her free time. It was facing failure head-on that taught her the lessons that she needed to succeed in life. In her motivational speech, she also talks about how imagination is “the power that enables us to empathize with humans” and implores us to use it for the good of others. 

Simon Sinek has a simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership, all starting with a golden circle and the question “Why?”. The author and ethnographer (an anthropologist who studies specific human subcultures) speak about his findings on the most effective method to inspire change. He goes into detail about the parts of the brain that a leader must affect to influence others, as well as the type of behavior that inspires others to take action for a cause.

“Start with the Why” is Simon’s main tag line and is based on the idea that if you can appeal to people’s hearts and make them truly believe what you believe, then they will trust and follow you. This motivational English speech is interesting for students because it gives you a scientific breakdown of the human brain and thinking patterns for decision-making.

Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She is also the author of a #1 New York Times bestselling book and the speaker of this motivational speech on the power of vulnerability.

According to Brené, the popular opinion that being vulnerable makes us emotional and weak is wrong. In this motivational speech, she invites us to drop the armor that “protects” us. According to Brown, “when we open our minds to new experiences, we find joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.”

It can be difficult, even shameful, to be an introvert in a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else. But, as Susan Cain argues in this motivational speech, introverts bring extraordinary talents and abilities to the world and should be encouraged and celebrated. 

Business and entrepreneurship are often thought to be a game played best by the outgoing. Since we’re dedicated to helping speaking professionals succeed, it stands to reason that we have a few favorite examples of our own! Today, we want to share some of the motivational speeches that our team thinks are most worth the listen. While you can find hundreds of inspirational talks on the internet, we think there’s something really special about these ten talks. Whether you want to be a speaker yourself or just need a mood boost, each of these examples is sure to leave you ample fuel for motivation and reflection! 

Topics of the speeches we cover today range from psychology and relationships, to goal-setting and growth, to effective leadership, to personal stories that carry weighty lessons. For each speech, we’ll include some insights into what really sets these talks apart. We also highly recommend setting some time aside to give each on its own and form your own opinions! Let’s dive into some of these amazing motivational speeches so you can see (or hear!) for yourself why we love them so much. 

1. Brené Brown: The Power of Vulnerability

We’re going to start with almost a too-obvious choice. You will see Brené Brown’s name pop up on just about any  list of important motivational speeches. And with good reason! This 2011 TED talk isn’t just one of the most-watched TED talks of all time. It’s an incredible investigation into the roles that connection, shame and vulnerability play in human relationships. It’s also an eye-opening exploration into why we all tend to shrink from vulnerability and what could happen if we flipped the script. And from a purely public speaking standpoint, it’s a great display of Brown’s wit and charisma. If you struggle with vulnerability in your own life or are trying to understand why a loved one keeps shutting you out, Brown’s short but impactful talk might have some answers for you. 

We covered this motivational speech in our recent article about pathos because Brown is a master of emotional connection. She backs up her argument with ample academic research, but connects her message to real, relatable experiences throughout. As she narrates her own experiences in a therapist’s office, she invites the audience to walk through those experiences with her. Making psychological research accessible to the masses is no easy feat, but Brown manages to do it with storytelling and humor. Her greatest lesson, perhaps, comes in how vulnerability can teach how to treat ourselves kindly.

“Our job is to look and say, “You know what? You’re imperfect, and you’re wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.”

2. Simon Sinek: “How great leaders inspire action”

Simon Sinek is a world-renowned author and speaker with an incredible knack for delivering profound and easily intelligible advice on leadership, business, and success. He has written several books and delivered many motivational speeches. His TED talk “How Great Leaders Inspire Action,” which grew out of his first book, is perhaps the most well-known. Similarly to Brown’s speech, we think no list of the best motivational speeches would be complete without it. In short, it’s an analysis of how people like Steve Jobs and Martin Luther King Jr., and the Wright Brothers managed to accomplish amazing, unheard of things. Sinek theorizes that there is a unique way that great leaders communicate, and that’s how they get things done. 

If you’re a leader but don’t understand why your marketing and sales fall flat, or if you long to start a company but don’t know how to tap into what makes people excited about a business, Sinek has wisdom to share for you. His speech is for you if you’ll ever be in a leadership position or struggle to pinpoint your professional mission. And if you’re curious about why people trust certain political leaders and not others, you’ll want to listen to this speech. Sinek is a master of words and he distills a lot of fascinating information into simple stories and lessons about innovation and leadership. Give this one a listen to get fired up about what you believe and how you can make an impact with those beliefs. 

“ People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. The goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe.

3. Steve Jobs: Stanford Commencement speech  

Commencement addresses can be hit or miss. Sometimes they fill graduating seniors with energy and inspiration for the life ahead, other times they get a few laughs and more than a few yawns. Even celebrities and business leaders aren’t always up to the task of sending young adults off into the world. But in 2005 at Stanford University, Steve Jobs not only rose to the task, but outstripped expectations by delivering an iconic motivational speech that today is the most-watched commencement speech on YouTube. 

If you’ve been around The Speaker Lab for a while, you know we’re big fans of storytelling . Steve Jobs illustrates our favorite speaking strategy by structuring his remarks as three stories. The first: his experience as a college dropout and how it paved the path to his future. The second: his expulsion from Apple that allowed him to found Pixar and meet his wife, among other endeavors. And finally: his first brush with cancer and the second chance at life he was provided. While the last story rings differently in light of Jobs’s death in 2011, the wisdom he draws from the twists and turns of his life is applicable to far more than college seniors. 

The lessons of Jobs’s commencement address are myriad, and it’s a speech you’ll keep coming back to at different points in your life. Fortunately he summed them up himself:

“ Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

4. Randy Pausch: “The Last Lecture: Really Achieving your Childhood Dreams”

Randy Pausch was a pioneer in software and virtual reality development and a longtime professor at Carnegie Mellon University. In his 40s, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given just a few months to live. He delivered a final lecture as part of a series where academics were asked to give a talk on a topic that was deeply important to them–and he spoke about his childhood dreams.

Pausch showed his cancer scans at the start of his presentation, letting his audience sit with the reality of his terminal diagnosis. But his regular jokes (including onstage pushups) lightened the mood and allowed his audience to embark on a journey following his personal and professional ambitions. His lecture became a viral motivational speech and even landed him an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show a few weeks later.

Everybody has childhood dreams. Some people don’t accomplish them, but few forget them. Pausch’s lecture testifies to how having those big dreams can bear great fruit in your personal and professional life. He also provides great examples from his own journey of how going the extra mile–even if it seems crazy–can help you achieve those dreams. This is a long speech, but we encourage you to listen (or read ) in full because it’s so full of inspiration. But in the meantime, here are a few of our favorite lines: 

“Never lose the childlike wonder. It’s just too important. It’s what drives us.” 

“Remember, brick walls let us show our dedication. They are there to separate us from the people who don’t really want to achieve their childhood dreams. Don’t bail. The best of the gold is at the bottom of barrels of crap.”

5. Kelly McGonigal: “ How to make stress your friend “

Stress is something we all deal with, sometimes to an overwhelming degree. Many people try every possible hack to eliminate stress for their lives or live in fear of it. But what if we treated stress as something helpful–or even as a friend? What if we trusted ourselves to cope appropriately with stress rather than letting it ruin our lives? That’s what health psychologist Kelly McGonigal explores in this viral TED talk. 

Challenging the common parlance of stress as the bogeyman is no small task. McGonigal backs up her research with several studies to show that while stress can have deleterious effects on health, it doesn’t have to. She also undertakes some of our favorite tactics here at The Speaker Lab by interacting with her audience to further engage them. While a pop quiz from the stage probably wasn’t on their bingo cards, her in person audience members got a real-time taste of the “social stress test.” (To fully appreciate McGonigal’s point, we recommend pretending you’re in the auditorium with her and attempting to perform what she commands.) Then, she walks her audience through the stress reaction they just experienced and explains how, equipped with new strategies for leveraging stress, they could use that same reaction to approach the situation constructively.  

McGonigal’s research, which has also been published in book form, is not without controversy in the psychology space. But in an ever increasingly stressed out society, her talk could be the motivational speech you need to tackle your stressors head-on. The best part? Turning to the communities around you during stressful events can help you rather than drain you! As McGonigal says:

“People who spent time caring for others showed absolutely no stress-related increase in dying. Zero. Caring created resilience.”

6. Carol Dweck: “The power of believing that you can improve ” 

You’ve probably heard the term “growth mindset” thrown around in the professional and educational space. But do you know who coined it? Carol Dweck is a Stanford psychologist who researches the impact of mindset on how we approach failure and success. She has studied how believing in one’s ability to learn and improve can radically affect our reaction to challenges. Her research claims that by focusing on effort and strategy, we can help students expand their minds and overcome barriers by having a “growth mindset” rather than a “fixed mindset.” 

While her research focuses on students, her TED talk discusses principles with universal application, such as the profound impact of believing we can change for the better. She also explores ideas for constructive communication with the next generation to set them up for success. Do you feel limited by externally applied standards? Have you been put in a box your whole life that you struggle to break out of? Do you throw in the towel easily because you feel that you just can’t win? Dweck’s motivational speech might give you more confidence in your abilities. Our favorite line?

“…praising the process that kids engage in, their effort, their strategies, their focus, their perseverance, their improvement. This process praise creates kids who are hardy and resilient.”

7. Malala Yousafzai: “16th birthday speech at the United Nations”  

Malala Yousafzai is the world’s youngest Nobel laureate and one of the best known human rights advocates of her generation. Her speech before the U.N. in 2014 is a passionate appeal for setting worldwide injustices right. From her harrowing story of being shot in the head, to her advancement of nonviolence, this motivational speech is a moving reminder of how much work each and every one of us can do to lift the burden of the oppressed. 

Though her audience at the time of the speech was a group of world leaders, we can all learn a lot from Malala that applies to our own lives. In addition to her stirring personal story, she lays out a variety of action items that we can all undertake in our communities to lay a foundation for justice. Furthermore, she emphasizes how education and tolerance rather than violence and politics can help win the fight against terrorism. If you ever feel at a loss for what you can do to change the word, Malala is the motivator you need. This speech is also a great model for using your personal story and character or ethos to persuade your audience, which we cover here .

8. Joel Osteen: “The power of I am”

Oprah described this sermon by pastor Joel Osteen as life-changing, and you might find it so too! Osteen is a clergyman, but many of his sermons are functionally motivational speeches that can inspire your life regardless of whether you’re religious or not. “The Power of I Am” is about how excessive negativity can control our lives. Osteen argues that when we say “I am ______,” we’re inviting whatever that is into our lives. If we repeatedly say “I am” statements followed by something negative or something we hate about ourselves, we are just digging ourselves deeper into that hole. 

Osteen’s words are badly needed in a world where the internet encourages negative comparison and loneliness is epidemic. He uses examples from Scripture and from his own life to show how talking yourself down becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. This is something we all experience at some point! You mess up, say “I’m an idiot,” and for the rest of the day your idiocy, clumsiness, or incompetence suddenly seems like the most noticeable thing about you. Or maybe an authority figure once identified you with your failures and you internalized it for years and years. Osteen’s sermon is an amazing call to do better. We can carry ourselves with confidence, not pride, and disconnect our flaws from our sense of self. 

“My encouragement is never say negative things about yourself. Most of us would never go up to another person, at least to their face and criticize them yet we have no problems criticizing ourselves. “I am so slow. I am so unattractive. I am so undisciplined”. That is cursing your future. Do yourself a favor and zip that up. We have enough in life against us already. Don’t be against yourself.”

9. Nicole Walters: “Why Excuses Are the #1 Thing Keeping You From Your Goals”  

Nicole Walters is an incredible entrepreneur and businesswoman who quit her successful corporate career to start her own company when she realized her blog was generating her significant passive income. This keynote from a conference for online creators outlines how she managed to do it all…with blood, sweat, tears, and no excuses! 

While Nicole dishes out amazing strategies for building your business and avoiding excuses, this is also an incredible example of how to give a great motivational speech. 10. William Faulkner: Banquet Speech  

For our final must-listen motivational speech, we’re heading back in time. William Faulkner delivered this speech when he received the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature. The threat of nuclear war hung heavy at the time Faulkner received the award. Faulkner himself eschewed the acclaim and reward that his talent deserved. His speech is a testament to the immortality of art and literature. His words elegantly express how art and literature can help humanity survive beyond dark times. 

Especially in an age of AI, media cycles, and overwhelming access to information, a reminder of the power and importance of art is badly needed. Faulkner’s speech is short, but it’s extremely moving. Every sentence drips with the weight of writers and artists who went before him, carrying humanity through crises and catastrophes and helping rebuild and process their wake. Faulkner himself says it best: 

“I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet’s, the writer’s, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet’s voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.”

Mastering how to deliver a great motivational speech is no easy task. We think these paragons of motivational speaking deserve special attention for their mastery and inspiration!
