Course-to-Course Copying in Canvas: A Quick Guide

by Thomas Keith | May 24, 2018 | Canvas , Canvas Features/Functions , How-tos

When you’re setting up a new Canvas course site, you may want to reuse material from one or more courses you’ve already taught in Canvas.  Fortunately, Canvas makes it easy to copy content from one course site to another, whether you want to copy an entire course or only certain course materials.  Here are the basic steps for a course-to-course copy:

1. Create your new Canvas site.

Canvas Course Settings Page Showing Import Button

4. Find the Canvas course you want to copy from, via the drop-down menu or search box.

5. Choose whether you want to import All Content or Selected Content .  You can also adjust the due dates of your assignments by checking the Adjust events and due dates box.

6. Click Import .

7. If you chose All Content , you’re done.  If you chose Selected Content , you can now pick which content you want to      import before completing the import process.

8. Review any issues that may have come up during the import process.

How to Copy Specific Materials from One Canvas Course to Another Canvas Course

Instructors in a Canvas course may copy over their individually created content from one Canvas course to another course they are enrolled in. Items that can be copied using this method are: announcements, modules, pages, assignments, discussions, and quizzes (includes New Quizzes). This process is an alternative to using the “Import Course Content” feature which allows bulk copying of content from one Canvas course to another.

**Exceptions: Files, external URL, and external tool links do not have this option.**

How to copy from one Canvas course to another

November 6, 2020

Interterm and Spring 2021 courses are now available in Canvas.

Before you hit “copy all” please check the following resources and avoid the most common issues., best practice :.

Do NOT “Copy All” when copying from one course to another. You will end up with more than you bargained for. Use caution when copying the Calendar. It will copy events from the PAST which you likely don’t want in your future course. Do NOT copy things more than once into the same course. If you copy the same item to the same course more than once, the item you previously copied will be overwritten with the newly copied item. Always run the Link Validator after a copy to check for any broken links or links pointing to the wrong course.
The following items don’t copy  or don’t copy well, so expect to recreate these items from scratch: Turnitin assignments 3rd party integrations (Flipgrid, publisher content, etc) Calendar items Zoom meetings

Click the Add New Elements tab if not already selected

Arrow pointing at + icon in tab bar at the top of the DesignPLUS sidebar.

  • Image Alignment floats the image left or right, centers the image, or resets the image to the default alignment.
  • Fill Container Width fills the entire width of the container with the image. Max Width Fill will display an image at a set width. The image will be responsive and will reduce in size as your students’ browser size decreases, but it will never expand beyond the size set. This is helpful for images that are not high resolution and may become pixelated as your students’ browser size increases.
