A holiday in India would most probably mean going to some hill station, near or far. But no, not to a city! We do take Indian cities, for granted. Most of us do not even venture to visit any, except if it is for office work, or a family visit or a wedding or some such thing. A holiday in a city is not attractive option. But I beg to differ. Particularly now, now that I have just returned from one. Just so happened that there was an invitation for UpperCrust from the JW Marriott to come visit Chandigarh. Sounded tempting. I accepted. Time we visited our own cities.

Oh my God, I came away most impressed. What a beautiful city, Chandigarh is. So clean, so green, so friendly, so well-planned, so comfortable, so liveable. A modern, urban society living a relaxed country life. The citizens of this city must feel blessed. It is even named after a temple called Chandi and is picturesquely located at the foothills of the Shivaliks. The one fact about Chandigarh which has the unique distinction of being the capital of two neighbouring states, Punjab and Haryana, governed directly by the union government, is that everyone is aware it is India´s first planned city, designed in the 50s by Le Corbusier, the renowned French architect. What a legacy he has left behind. And with such strict instructions all summed up in an edict, which I recommend you read in totality on the internet.

Do you know that the architect banned statues being installed at any traffic roundabouts or parks in the city. Which means these roundabouts that the locals call golchakkars are simply manicured gardens, free of statues of random politicians looking down upon you, ruining the skyline. Talking of skylines, there are no high-rises in Chandigarh either. And the city is divided into 56 Sectors, number 13 not being in existence at all. A superstition we are familiar with. Even in Bingo, the lottery game, they spell it out, loud and clear, "...and now for the unlucky one, number 13!

Well, for all of Corbusier´s belief in bad luck, he has done a marvelous job. The city has grown and yet remains the same. So well-planned is it that there is no room for chaos. No traffic jams too, will you believe it!

And the city is full of parks and gardens and fortunately Corbusier´s instructions are being followed to the day. Read what his edict states: "The landscaping of this city is based on careful observation of the vegetation of India. Selected ornamental trees, shrubs and climbers have been planted according to colour schemes to beautify it. In future planting and replacements, these principles must be kept in view. There should be no haphazard replacements, so that the avenues retain their harmony and beauty." It is remarkable that its denizens look after their beloved city with great zeal, maintaining the character bestowed upon it more than six decades ago.

Chandigarh incidentally is home to Asia´s largest Rose Garden. Named after India´s former president, Zakir Hussain, the garden is spread over 30 acres of land with over 16 thousand different species of roses.

It would be impossible to write an article on Chandigarh and not talk about its unique Rock Garden. I was left speechless as I wandered in this unbelievably creative space. The creator of this rock garden, Nek Chand was a Road Inspector in the Engineering Department of the Chandigarh Capital Project. He roamed the Shivalik foothills and picked up stones resembling birds, animals, human and abstract forms. He brought them on his bicycle to a hut which he had built by the side of a stream. The first seven years (1958-65) he spent collecting natural material, urban and industrial waste. Gradually his collection mounted to a staggering 20 thousand rock forms of amazing beauty. These were deposited around the hut from where he also proceeded to build the Rock Garden. Since the site where Rock Garden stands today was also used as a dumping ground for urban, industrial and metal waste, Nek Chand picked up random stuff and shaped them with his creative genius into human, animal or abstract forms. These are the very pieces which are now innovatively displayed as sculptures in the garden.

Also on display are shapes sculptured by using a variety of discarded materials such as frame, mudguards, forks, handle bars, metal wires, play marbles, pieces of state, burnt bricks and even hair recovered from barber shops. Nek Chand salvaged from demolished structures; waste from lime kilns, discarded street lights, electrical fittings, broken sanitaryware and crockery, and fruitfully recycled and used it all in his creative pursuit. If for nothing else, a trip to Chandigarh is necessary just to visit this amazing Rock Garden, especially with children. Would be so educative, entertaining and inspiring for them.

There is much else you can do in this lovely city. There is the tranquil Sukhna lake, the elixir of Chandigarh, that you can visit. We made it there for the sunrise and I can´t tell you how exhilarating it was. It´s a popular place to hang out, with a walking path, a cafeteria, shops, a mini amusement park and paddle boats. The lake, incidentally, has Asia´s longest water channel for rowing and yachting.

We also visited Sector 17, which is for shopping and came back with bags full of kurtis, scarves and handicraft adorning phulkari, the local embroidery of the state. You could easily spend an entire evening walking down the no-car street with shops on either sides with everything you can think of. The best global brands jostle for space with local handicrafts, footwear, jewellery and more.  

But no trip to Punjab would be complete without a day out in heartland! And that is exactly what JW Marriott had planned for us. We got into tractors and drove past mustard and sugarcane fields to an open space where we first witnessed the making of jaggery and later ate with gusto the hearty lunch which was laid out. Starting with a tumbler of freshly churned lassi and ending with the defining dish of pastoral Punjab; sarson ka saag with makke di roti, we couldn´t have asked for more. Except of course Gajrela. Which is what we rounded off with. The ubiquitous gajar ka halwa with finely grated carrots flavoured with cardamom and sprinkled with dryfruits and nuts put us in a mood to head straight back to Marriott and sleep it off!

Last but not the least, we spent a day at Marriott soaking in the luxury the property offers. The breakfast spread at The Café @JW is perfect. It is not overwhelming while offering you regional as well as international options. Lunch at Saffron, the Indian fine dining restaurant turned out to be a good experience. With flavours and aroma of the North-West Frontier region with a delectable fare in true Punjabi spirit. The menu is extensive, but worth trying are the Doodhiya Barra Kebab, Lehsuni Mahi Tikka, Mushroom aur Chilgoze ki Galouti, Tari Wala Kukkad, Nalli Nihari, Raan-e-Sikandari and Paneer Lababdar. Later in the evening I headed for Quan, their award winning spa for a relaxing treatment. I must say the masseuse was good; well-trained and efficient. Post massage, the sauna did the trick and I was ready to face the world.

Which means I was at 35Brewhouse, their in-house microbrewery, savouring a unique hand-crafted beer, along with the rest of the fun team!

Adventures in ‘the Most Organized City’ in India

With only three more stops to go, our columnist takes in Chandigarh, Le Corbusier’s rigorously planned city, and, on the flip side, a fantastical rock garden, with a mirrored fun-house and waterfall.

Our columnist, Jada Yuan, is visiting each destination on our 52 Places to Go in 2018 list . This dispatch brings her to the Chandigarh, India (no. 43 on the list); it is the 49th stop on Jada’s itinerary.

A tiny figure in flowing blue fabric ran in front of me, giggling, then another, then another, then perhaps a hundred more. They filed through what looked like a handcrafted version of a canyon from the moon: a narrow passageway of pockmarked concrete embedded with rocks, stretching two stories into the air.

There they were again, taking selfies next to a man-made waterfall tumbling from some kind of shrine on a hill.

And then, quick as panthers, they were behind me, waving from a bridge festooned with clay vines: “Hello! Hello! Where are you from?”

When I had arrived by rickshaw at Nek Chand’s Rock Garden in Chandigarh, India, I had been prepared to gorge on a 40-acre extravaganza of outsider art. I had not anticipated, though, the sheer joy that would come from sharing that playground with uniformed schoolgirls from the nearby Muslim-majority city of Malerkotla.

Chandigarh One Day Trip: 9 Amazing Things to Do & Places to Visit

With given the honor of being ‘the first planned city of India after Independence’ Chandigarh is famous for its modern and urban infrastructure around the world. A Chandigarh one day trip is widely sought after mainly among North Indians because the city is oozing with bustling markets, lush gardens, a number of incredible attractions, and a wide range of delectable delicacies offered!

I have gone to Chandigarh many times and no matter when I visit there, the city feels like a different place each time, and there are a lot of things to do in this gorgeous landscape.

Things to do in Chandigarh One Day Trip

The city of Chandigarh was built by a French architect called Le Corbusier and it was named after Goddess Chandi (The Goddess of Power). It was the dream city of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and is also known as ‘The City Beautiful’.

The city is divided into 47 self-contained sectors connected with well-paved roads and a ton of roundabouts. Each road is embraced by the shade of various trees with separate cycling paths highlighted on the pavements.

Fun Fact: There is no sector 13 in Chandigarh because its architect Le Corbusier found that number to be very unlucky.

Here are 9 things to do in Chandigarh for one day!

1. Visit the Iconic Rock Garden

Start your day by visiting the Rock Garden and witnessing the beautiful and unique sculptures made from recycled matter such as broken glass, ceramics, and industrial and household wastes.

I have only seen the Rock Garden once despite the many visitations to the green city of India , and let me tell you, it was mindblowing! I was in awe of all the time and wondered how throwaways can be reused and recycled in such an efficient way.

Did you know?: This establishment was the brainchild of artist Nek Chand who also received many awards for this creation including Padma Bhushan (third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India) .

• Timings: 9 am-7 pm (all week)
• Entrances: Rs 30 (Adults), Rs 10 (Toddlers)

2. Elante Mall: Splurge a Little

Moving further with the Chandigarh itinerary, the Elante Mall awaits!

Elante Mall is the third biggest shopping mall in India with over 200 retail outlets, a giant food court with international cuisines, and 8 8-screen theatre making it on the list of top must-visit places in Chandigarh for one day trip.

To be honest, you can spend your whole day roving from outlet to outlet and still finding new stuff to purchase, or watch a movie with the best sound system, and after getting exhausted from all the shopping, there is a variety of food options available at the food court for you to cram down.

• Timings: 11 am-10 pm (all week)

3. Get Enchanted by The Government Museum and Art Gallery

The Chandigarh one day trip is incomplete without taking a look inside the Government museum and art gallery . This place is filled with ancient sculptures, archeological artifacts, and splendid collections of artwork.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and learned a lot about Indian history, and for those interested in history this place is a compelling visit in your Chandigarh city tour.

4. Spend Some Time at The Japanese Garden

Located in sector 31, this garden features Japanese-inspired architecture, ponds, waterfalls, pagoda towers, golden bamboos, a meditation center, etc. thus making it one of the most unique places in Chandigarh for one day trip.

• Timings: 10 am-9 pm (all week)

5. Take a Stroll in The Rose Garden

Well, there are a lot of gardens in Chandigarh, that’s for sure…

You need to visit this magnificent garden! Spanning over 30 acres of land, the Rose Garden is the largest of its kind in all of Asia. This park exhibits over 1600 species of roses and around 32,500 varieties of trees and shrubs. The fragrant aroma and the riot of colors from all those opulent roses are a sight for your sore eyes to witness.

This garden is always the last stop on my Chandigarh one day trip and I make sure to take at least one round of the garden.

Tip: The best time to visit the Rose Garden is between Feb and March when the flowers are fully bloomed.

6. Boating at Sukhana Lake

Sukhana Lake is actually a reservoir located at the foothills of the Shivalik Ranges and is a popular Chandigarh city tour attraction. Most locals visit the lake in the evening as it proffers a majestic sunset view and boating.

They close the boating services by 6 pm , and I, who have some punctuality issues just got there in the nick of time and practically begged the in charge there for a boating experience.

Luckily they accepted my crying and begging, but it gets pretty crowded there at this time, so plan your Chandigarh one day trip accordingly.

…And after boating you can just stroll by the lake or sit on a bench and watch the sunset.

7. Explore the Local Markets and Eat Street Food (A Must-Do in Chandigarh One Day Trip)

It will be cruel if all you do is scramble to different tourist places in Chandigarh for one day trip and not explore its vibrant local markets, and gobble up its piquant street food.

Visit the biggest market there, the Sector 17 Plaza , also known as the ‘Heart of Chandigarh’ . It is the commercial and shopping hub of Chandigarh covering over 240 acres of land.

Enjoy gol gappas, samosas, chole bhatures, and softies, as well as spend on electronics, clothes, and shoes, and the best part is you can find anything suited to your price point.

Some of the other local markets to visit are:

• Palika Bazaar
• Shastri Market
• Sadar Market

8. Experience the Nightlife

Chandigarh offers some of the craziest nightlife experiences! As the city lits up in the twilight, the locals get out of their houses and the whole city gathers a certain elegance.

As for partying, you should head to Sector 26 or Sector 7 which are known for their immaculate pubs, clubs, bars, and lounges, which are sure to give you a hangover in the morning and an exorbitant bill amount.

Some of the best clubs that I’ve visited are:

• Ministry of Bar Exchange

Tip: Most of the bars and clubs close down at 1 am.

9. Eat at The Local Restaurants and Cafes

Not only Chandigarh is full of attractions but it is also famous for its mouthwatering food. Chandigarh has a massive menu of delicacies but being the capital of Punjab, it offers a wide range of Punjabi cuisines that are to die for!

Your Chandigarh one day trip will not be fulfilling until you try Punjabi dishes such as butter chicken, dal makhani, paneer tikka, rajma chawal, sarson ka saag, etc.

Many restaurants and cafes are meticulously built and offer affordable food of utter deliciousness. Some of them are:

Chandigarh is a huge city and you need at least 2 days to see all the glory of this place. There are a lot of attractions and places that I’ve left out as it is only a one day trip in Chandigarh, but if you find some extra time or wish to stay there for some more days, these are the places you could check out:

Even though it is only a Chandigarh one day trip, you need a place to rest after all the exhaustion from roaming and exploring.

Because this city is well-developed, has flawless infrastructure, and well-maintained monuments, it attracts a lot of tourists from distant parts of the world. So, Chandigarh has extensive hotel chains from luxury to affordable:

How to Reach Chandigarh

The city of Chandigarh excels at its infrastructure and so does its roads. Moreover, it is well connected with all the surrounding cities like Mohali, Panchkula, Ambala, etc with good quality highways. So, for a Chandigarh one day trip, travelling via car is the best option.

As mentioned above the roads in Chandigarh are well-paved and are well-connected with nearby cities, therefore getting there by bus is a good and the cheapest option. There are 2 main bus stands and they are in Sector 17 and Sector 43.

From there on, auto-rickshaws can be easily found for getting around the city.

The nearest airport to the city is called Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, which is 13 km south of the city. The airport doesn’t have many international flights but mainly boards domestic flights

Getting Around

Because the public transportation in Chandigarh is really good, you can easily take the interstate buses for your Chandigarh city tour. Also if you want more flexibility, you can opt for auto-rickshaws.

Chandigarh is a moderately expensive place, with cheap transport facilities. This is a city that can cater to prodigals who are willing to splurge, as well as those who are on tight budgets.

Best Time to Visit Chandigarh

Chandigarh remains pleasant throughout the year, but it can be a little unpredictable during monsoon as the city is surrounded by Aravali hills, so there is a possibility of getting stuck in heavy rainfall.

The best time to visit the green city would be from January to March as the weather starts to warm down and the season starts to transition from winter to spring. The temperature ranges between 15° C to 30° C and the flowers and the trees start to bloom, which makes it the perfect time for a Chandigarh one day trip.

7 Reasons Why Chandigarh City Is My Favourite Place In India

Years ago, on a breezy February night, I was born in the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, only to be separated by it 5 months later when my parents moved to Delhi. Now, 22 years later, I continue to live in this concrete polluted jungle they call Delhi. Fortunately, I have relatives who reside in Chandigarh City and because of that, I get to visit the city at least once a year. Every trip of mine ends on a nostalgic note, and makes me fall in love with 'The City Beautiful' more than before.

Reasons I Love Chandigarh City

Here's what makes Chandigarh my favourite Indian city.

1. The roads are perfect for driving

The roads in Chandigarh City are wide and traffic rules are strictly followed, making it conducive for driving. Every time I've driven on Chandigarh roads, it has been a hassle-free and fun ride.

2. Noiseless neighbourhoods

Of all the neighbourhoods I've visited in Chandigarh , not a single one came across as noisy to me. The quiet colonies of Chandigarh City are embellished by the melodic sounds of chirpy birds and give you a glimpse into an unhurried way of living.

3. Proximity to some of the best hill stations in India

Sometimes I wish I lived in Chandigarh, just so I could easily escape to the Himalayas every weekend. Hill stations such as Shimla, Kasauli, Barog, Parwanoo et al are just a stone throw's away, making the city an ideal place to live in for mountain lovers.

4. Greenery

Chandigarh City is not only home to a number of parks and gardens but even the streets are dotted with tall, beautiful trees.

5. Cleanliness

According to Swachh Survekshan 2018, Chandigarh is the third cleanest city in India. It has also been ranked as the cleanest Indian city previously. When it comes to cleanliness, the entire city reminds me of my favourite area of Delhi - Chanakyapuri.

6. Architecture and design

Chandigarh's striking architecture is one of its distinguishing feature. The city was planned by the famous French architect, Le Corbusier and has a neat, urban design. The whole city is divided into sectors which makes it very easy to navigate.

The foundation of Chandigarh was laid in 1952. Later, when Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh were reorganized in 1966, the city became the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. It was declared a Union Territory and under the direct control of the Central Government.

All its buildings are built in a planned manner. Its three major buildings—the Legislative Assembly Building , the High Court and the Secretariat—are the cause of special attraction.

Major functions of the Punjab government are conducted in these three buildings. As laws are made in the legislature. Laws are enforced in the Secretariat and the High Court is committed to complying with these laws.

Chandigarh is divided into sectors. It currently has 48 sectors. Each sector has its own market, school, hospital, post office etc.

The bus stand here has been built in sectors 3 and 17. Sataran sector area is the most congested area. In fact, all Punjab government offices are located in seventeen sectors.

People from all corners of Punjab come here to get their work done. Because of this, people keep coming here. The city also has an international airport.

There are many places to visit in Chandigarh. These places add a lot to the beauty of Chandigarh. Its Rock Garden, Rose Garden, Sukhna-Jheel, and Liar Valley are all places of special attraction in terms of beauty.

The rock garden is a masterpiece of an artist named Nek Chand who created it by collecting waste materials. There are many types of roses blooming in the rose garden. The scenery of Sukhna-Jheel is different. By the way, it is always crowded but on Saturdays and Sundays, it is a sight to behold.

It’s like a fair here. Children are seen walking in boats in the lake. Now many restaurants have also been built here for eating and drinking.

There are many educational institutions in Chandigarh. Students from all over the country come to study at Panjabi University here. P. G. I. There is a huge medical research centre called. Every disease is treated here. Apart from this, there are many schools and colleges in the city which are great beacons of education.

Chandigarh city is a pollution-free city. The railway station and the industrial area here are just outside the city. Because of this, there is no trace of smoke from the factories.

Similarly, the sewage system here is very good. No matter how much it rains, water can never stand on the roads. The greenery here, trees and plants absorb the pollution.

Summary – Basically Chandigarh is a very beautiful city. There is little to praise it. It is famous in the country and abroad because of its beauty. Tourists from abroad prefer to stay in Chandigarh.

Chandigarh, the first planned city in India, is known for its Punjabi culture and food. The city has both a traditional and a modern feel to it, with a neat architecture that might be familiar to western travelers. The city is not huge and is not crowded with options, which makes this the perfect place to relax and wind down for travelers coming to India because the country can often be overwhelming with all the choices it offers. Famous among North Indians as a short getaway, the city also acts as a starting point when traveling to relaxing hill stations in Himachal Pradesh. One day in Chandigarh should therefore be used as well as possible. Here’s how!

What’s the best time to visit Chandigarh?

Indian summers are infamous for being hot, so the best time to visit Chandigarh is during the winter months, from October to February . The temperature can range from 8 degrees to 25 degrees Celsius. Days are fairly sunny, but mornings and evenings can be a bit chilly. Despite that, this period is definitely the ideal time to explore this beautiful city.

  A few facts about Chandigarh

The city was designed by the architect Le Corbusier, and its name is derived from the temple of Chandi Devi. Chandigarh – “Chandi”, the warrior and the goddess of power, and “Garh” means fort.

Chandigarh is a union territory and a capital city of two states – Punjab and Haryana, which means you can feel the culture of both the states in one place. The city is divided into 47 sectors, but there is no sector 13 because Le Corbusier believed the number 13 to be unlucky. 

One Day in Chandigarh Itinerary:

Start your day with some delicious Punjabi breakfast. Indulge in hot and crispy Amritsari Kulcha with spicy Chole and tangy tamarind chutney and, of course, a tall glass of Lassi, which is mandatory if you are in Chandigarh. If you are going on a weekend, the chances are this place will be crowded, so you will have to wait. You can enjoy a cup of masala chai while you are waiting because it is an established fact that chai and cold weather go hand in hand.

Find Le Corbusier’s works

Le Corbusier, otherwise known as Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, is the architect very much responsible for how the city looks today. In fact, many architects come here just to study his work.

If you would like to do the same (and you should, even if you’re not an architect), Capitol Complexis definitely something you shouldn’t miss because it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the Secretariat Building, the Tower of Shadows, and the Palace of Assembly are all relatively close to that.

Finally, you can also visit the Le Corbusier Center, a museum where you can find a whole lot of fascinating details about the way the master architect worked. It also sheds light on the fascinating process of creating a whole city.

Make your way to Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden

Take a car or a taxi to your next destination – the beautiful Sukhna Lake . This place is always bustling with tourists. The best thing here is going for a lazy boat ride. You can opt for a paddleboat, a rowing boat, or a Shikara ride, and the cost would be around INR 50 – INR100.

If you are still not full from breakfast, there is a cafe called CITCO Cafeteria , with both indoor and outdoor seating to munch on snacks and drinks.

This place also has the longest rowing channels in India that host Asian Rowing Championship.

Marvel at the Rock Garden

After that, head to your next destination, which is hardly a kilometer away. Rock Garden was built by Mr. Nek Chand, a former road inspector in Chandigarh. It is a massive open-air exhibition with sculptures made from waste material.

There are figurines and animal sculptures made from broken terracotta pots, tiles, glasses, mirrors, tube light pieces, and even broken toilet pots. There is a huge waterfall and amphitheater, a perfect place to click pictures, but you might have to fight to get space because this area is always crowded. The creativity of this place is something everyone should experience at least once.

Time to Shop at Elante Mall

If you are coming to Chandigarh, you simply MUST visit Elante Mall , famous among both locals and tourists. It is a massive mall with many shopping options like clothes, gadgets, jewelry, and home decor. You can find everything under one roof.

It also has a massive food court with a variety of cuisines to offer. This is a perfect place to hang out with friends or family. Even if you are not in the shopping mood, you definitely should visit this place just to click pictures with the “I Love Chandigarh” sign placed outside the mall.

Take Blessings at Gurudwara Shri Teg Bahadur Sahib

No better place to calm your mind than a gurudwara . If you are not familiar, a gurudwara is a place of worship for Sikhs, and it literally means “Guru’s Door”.The tranquil and positive energy of a gurudwara can warm anyone’s heart.

Make sure to cover your head, take off your shoes, and wash your hands before entering inside. You can sit and listen to the beautiful Gurbani playing in the background. Don’t forget to take the kada prasad, which is made from flour, sugar, water, and a lot of ghee.

After that, you can enjoy the langar as your lunch. Langar is a free vegetarian meal offered at every Gurudwara. People from all religions, castes, and economic backgrounds sit together in a hall and eat.

If you want, you can also offer your service for distributing the langar, washing utensils, or cleaning the area.

Visit the Rose Garden

Chandigarh has many beautiful gardens. One of them is the famous Zakir Hussain Rose Garden , named after the former President of India. If you are traveling at the end of February, you are in for a treat. The flowers are in full bloom at this time.

A rose festival is organized from the end of February to the beginning of March. There are more than 800 varieties of flowers and around 30,000 varieties of trees and medicinal plants. They also host several competitions and cultural events.

You can wind down and stroll around. There are also misty fountains in between the garden, perfect for those touristy pictures.

Experience the local market

Just 2 km from the Rose Garden, you can experience the hustle and bustle of the Shastri Market . Famous among the shoppers, you will find dozens of shops and sellers on the streets selling the traditional Phulkari Dupattas and beautiful Juttis.

If you are a jewelry lover, this is a perfect place to buy chunky oxidized jewelry and more elegant and dainty pieces, as well.

Do not forget to indulge in some Gol Gappa while you are here. You can try any seller; they are all amazing. Head over to Garg Chaat shop to try more Indian street food like Dahi Bhalla, Tikki, Bhel Puri, and Pav Bhaji. But please save some room for the next destination.

Dinner at the famous Pal Dhaba

If you have some space left in your tummy, you really should miss out on Pal Dhaba . Don’t expect some fancy ambiance. This place is more about food than decor. As soon as you enter, you will see a wall with pictures of Bollywood celebrities who have visited this place because it is that popular.

It was established in 1968, and they are still standing strong. You can try a variety of Indian food, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

If you are confused about what to order, you can also order a thali, which basically means a large plate. You will get dal, curry, naan, rice, and salad in this thali. Make sure to order a lassi on the side because you need another glass before you end the day.

Where to stay in Chandigarh, India?

Taj Chandigarh

Taj Chandigarh is a luxury, five-star hotel in Chandigarh in the very center of the city. Therefore, you can easily travel anywhere. Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden, and Elante Mall are only a few kilometers away. They have a rooftop pool here, a garden, and even a mini-golf course. The location is perfect for travelers.

Hotel Icon is a comfortable option for staying. They have a spa and a fitness center inside the hotel. You can also hire a hotel car to go sightseeing. The Chandigarh airport is only 6 km away. All the famous places can be easily reached from here, and the sector-17 market is also nearby if you want to check it out.

Hotel Athens

Hotel Athens has several important advantages to offer its guests. First, it is very close to the beach, and the Rock Garden is not far, either. Second, it is fairly affordable, and you can find a room here at a reasonable price. Oh, and the food is great, so you will enjoy your continental breakfast here very much.

Should you be traveling on a budget, The Diamond Ring is a great place to look for accommodation. Everything is very clean and very well maintained, so you can expect a very pleasant stay. The restaurant is on that same high level, and it even has a vegetarian menu to offer. Parking spaces are also available for hotel guests.

Day trips from Chandigarh

If you are planning on staying in India for a few more days. You should extend your one day in Chandigarh so you can visit a few more places nearby. There are some great day trip options very close by.

Morni Hills

Morni Hills, just 45 km away from the city, is a popular spot among people in Chandigarh for a nice quick getaway.

This is also a must-visit if you enjoy birdwatching. You can see a whole lot of fascinating and beautiful birds in their habitats, so you certainly won’t be disappointed.

There are two interconnected lakes and remains of the Morni Fort, which can be found close to the hills. If being surrounded by nature sounds like heaven to you, definitely add this place to your list of day trips from Chandigarh you have to make.

Kasauli, located in the Solan district, is a town with beautiful grand Victorian buildings built by the British.

This town is the birthplace of the famous Indian author Ruskin Bond and has inspired many of his stories. Therefore, the fans of this writer will definitely want to take a stroll here.

There is a famous temple of Lord Hanuman, situated at Manki Point, but be aware that there is also a 500m stairs climb to reach the temple. The hike has the most picturesque view, one of the main reasons people visit this place.

There are a few snack stalls along the way, and here you can enjoy Pakoras, Maggi and Chai.

Extra tips for visiting Chandigarh

• Make sure to carry woolen clothes, it can get fairly cold at night.
• Be aware of street vendors who might overcharge; it helps to have a local person with you.
• Always carry extra cash because street vendors don’t accept cards.
• If you are not Indian and cannot tolerate spicy food, carry some medicines with you, and you can also go to cafes like Nik Bakers, Café Mocha IT, and JC’s Cafe for lunch and dinner.

Are you planning to add Chandigarh to your India bucket list ? Wondering what are the top things to do in Chandigarh? Look no further! I’m going to present a detailed itinerary so that you enjoy Chandigarh and don’t miss all the amazing places to visit in Chandigarh

Truly an underrated city in terms of tourism, Chandigarh should be on your India bucket list, why? Because Chandigarh is the only Indian city to find a place in the New York Times’s Places to Go in 2018! Don’t wait till the city becomes the hot spot for the travel industry!

Chandigarh is a unique city in India as it is a single city which is the capital of two states – Punjab & Haryana. Chandigarh is an exceptional city built in a completely planned way, fewer red lights, and more roundabouts to take care of smooth traffic flow. It is shaping up for a small metro city with more IT companies coming and malls & international brands lining up.

Considering being one of the major cities in Punjab & Haryana, the youth from nearby towns and villages usually visit Chandigarh for study, jobs or simply partying in pubs. It’s a shame that Chandigarh is not much highlighted as a place to explore and not just a party destination. When I announced to my family that I’m heading to Chandigarh to explore than blatantly asked me what was there to explore & not in a good way!! That made me more enthusiastic to travel to Chandigarh and rather write about it. So even if you assume that there are no places to visit in Chandigarh, hang on with me!

Chandigarh’s travels may seem underwhelming as compared to other major tourist places in India. So I’m going to present you with the best things to see in Chandigarh. A typical laid-back culture, with typical family outing spots, brands to love to shop from and unique eateries – Chandigarh has it all. I was in Chandigarh for approx 30 hours and I can assure you it is actually less to explore this small yet beautiful town. 

Explore Rock Garden like a tourist

A name as unique as a Rock Garden, it is surely an intriguing garden which will appeal to your traveller buds. Built initially secretly by Nek Chand in 1957, the Rock Garden is a Sculpture Garden which truly conceptualized the utilization of home & industrial waste. On average 5000 people daily visit the Rock Garden, and the number significantly increases on weekends. I recommend reaching the Rock Garden as early as possible to explore and acknowledge the art in tranquillity. This is my top recommendation for the things to do in Chandigarh which even frequent travellers to the city ignored. 

The exceptional Rock Garden which started as an illegal garden is now truly the best thing to do in Chandigarh. Spread over 40 acres, the Rock Garden will probably need a day to explore completely. Rock Garden flaunts a form of art never highlighted to this extent in India before this initiative. 

Rock Garden is split into three phases with each phase displaying different types of sculptures. Phase One targets a variety of distorted rocks and discarded objects which are put to display in a captivating demeanour. 

Phase two is completely in contrast to phase one and looks more like a mini-kingdom in itself. Phase two showcases a huge man-made waterfall, canals and an open theatre.

The waterfall at the Rock Garden is usually the spotlight with the tourists considering a photogenic one. The canal at phase two looks straight out of some historic era which can be easily targeted for a movie shooting – yup that beautiful!

There are options to go on the other side of the waterfall which will give away a perception of a lost historic kingdom and palace lookalike. 

Phase three is the one which was built very late and is slightly disconnected from the main rock garden. There’s an option to skip Phase 3 and exit from the garden but I highly recommend visiting Phase 3 of Rock Garden. Phase 3 will give you a feel of Indian culture with sculptures built completely of waste and from the Indian historic era. 

I couldn’t cover the entire phase 3 as I had to catch a bus back to Delhi. But I strongly recommend going there early to skip crowds and to click better pictures! The entry fee for the Rock Garden is at a flat price of 30₹  for adults (Indians/Non-Indians) and 10INR for children. The Rock Garden opens at 9h00 in the morning and 18h00 in winter and 19h30 in summer . 

Walk to Open Hand Monument & Capitol Complex

A landmark associated with Chandigarh City is the Open Hand Monument. Designed by Le Corbusier – A Swiss-French architect – the Capitol Complex is a government premise holding the Legislative Assembly, Secretariat, and High Court apart from Open Hand Monument. The Open Hand Monument has caught the trend and is today one of the top things to do in Chandigarh.

The hand monument was  gestated as a symbol of openness and a place for the people of Chandigarh to discuss their issues or concerns here. Not more than 55 years old, the Open Hand monument is now a prime attraction in  Chandigarh. The famous Open Hand Monument also rotates as per the winds which can be a unique thing to experience. 

The entry to Open Hand Monument is free for all, but cars only drop to the main entry. The Open Hand Monument is pleasantly in the centre amid all greenery which will give you ample photographic opportunities. Even on a weekend the Hand Monument barely had any tourists giving me a way to try different camera angles and capture amazing clicks for myself!

Spend the Evening at Sukhna Lake

As Chandigarh was the dream city of India’s first Prime Minister – J.Nehru , the first ever planned city post Independence – the things to see in Chandigarh are mostly manmade. Another major and renowned tourist spot from Chandigarh inviting thousands of tourists from nearby towns is Sukhna Lake for the tourists. Easily one of the peaceful and best things to do in Chandigarh, Sukhna Lake shouldn’t be missed while visiting the capital. Visiting the lake in the evening and enjoying the breeze will be a lovely experience. 

The Sukhna Lake in the foothills of nearby Himachal Pradesh is more of a container storing the rainwater and the water running down from the nearby Himalayas. The same architect – Le Corbusier – designed the 3 km spread Sukhna Lake which is not more than 1 km away from Rock Garden. As opposed to Chilika Lake in Odisha , Sukhna Lake is cleaner and much more organized with a lot of eateries around. Sukhna Lake offers boating starting as early as 9h30 till 18h00 with and entry ticket at 25₹  per person. 

There are a number of eateries at the entry of Sukhna Lake and even some local vendors sell bhelpuri (a salty snack) at a low 10INR. Sitting on the stairs next to the lake bed on a chilly evening with bhelpuri in hand will be a serene experience. Post relaxing at the lake, we came back to the nearby food market to enjoy another Indian snack Tikki with tea to beat the chilly weather. Although tea was far below my expectations and I will not recommend having it there. 

If you’re a photography lover and sunsets and sunrises are your favourite clichés, don’t forget to head to Sukhna Lake early mornings and late evenings! There’s no entry fee for sitting by the lake bed so you can capture lake photographs without spending a penny. 

Shopping in Chandigarh

Chandigarh is famous in the nearby towns of the entire Punjab and Haryana for being a shopping hub giving credit to its sector 17 markets. A market built in a planned way just like the city, the sector 17 market premises will present you with not only amazing renowned brands but also an amazing café. There’s also a flea market in sector 17 for those who want to shop cheap. Till some years ago sector 17 was the only famous market for people in and around Chandigarh. But once the city came up with Elante Mall, the entire shopping front of Chandigarh was changed forever. With international brands targeting Chandigarh as well, Elante Mall is one of the top things to do in Chandigarh. Although I’m not a mall preacher, we actually went there to beat the chilly winds and ended up having an amazing dinner, more on that below.

Drive through the planned city

Chandigarh is one the most planned cities in India , with fewer traffic signals and more roundabouts and the traffic rules followed more than in any other city. It actually feels nice to drive around such a city. You’ll not see any high-rises in Chandigarh but all low-lying architecture is planned in an impressive manner. If you’re an architecture lover, don’t forget to click on those beautiful houses in the city. Chandigarh is loved by the youth for a city well planned & easy to drive in, which is why it’s on my list of amazing things to do in Chandigarh. So, hire a cab or take your car or bike and drive around!

Bike-tour in Chandigarh

Unlike other major cities in Delhi, Chandigarh promotes bike tours. “ Chandigarh by Cycle ” offers a 3-hour tour of the city revolving around the open hand monument, Sukhna Lake and the museums. If you love to bike, don’t forget to enrol yourself on the tour to visit all the sightseeing places in Chandigarh India. The awesome tour costs 1200 INR for 3 hours with proper safety equipment and well-spoken tour guides. 

Relish local food

I am a fan of street food and Chandigarh being influenced by Punjab has a lot of amazing food delicacies to offer. We tried the local chole kulche just half a km before the Sukhna Lake, and undoubtedly they had a unique flavour which I never had in Delhi . I’m a firm believer in supporting local vendors than the big brands. But if you have a weak stomach , I recommend don’t try street food .

Visit the City Museum, Government Museum and Art Gallery

Established in the late 1960s the Government Museum showcases the art from the Indian subcontinent which includes various sculptures, paintings, and much more contemporary Indian art. Although due to lack of time, I couldn’t visit both the museum, I highly recommend keeping at least 2 days for Chandigarh to visit the art galleries from the planned city.

Walk in the Zakir Hussein Rose Garden

Named after Zakir Hussein – India’s third President – the Rose Garden is another prime attraction from Chandigarh India. The garden is spread in over 30 acres and has a variety of rose species and was initially started as Botanical Garden. Spot for roses in the garden as there are only a few in bloom. The Rose Garden attracts many tourists so go as early as you can. 

Explore the International Dolls Museum

Internationally acclaimed, the Dolls Museum in Chandigarh is one of the best museums in India. The dolls being displayed in the Dolls Museum have been collected from as many as 250 countries. A place for true art lovers, Dolls Museum should be a prime attraction and must-see in Chandigarh India. The tiny dolls or puppets will cheer up your mood and will revive your childhood memories.

Best Places to Stay in Chandigarh

Although I stayed in Mohali which is a suburb of  Chandigarh, I highly recommend staying near the Sector 17 market. Sector 17 is well-connected to the bus depot, the railway station and the markets, eateries and all the other best places to visit in Chandigarh nearby. 

Some of my recommendations as the best places to stay in Chandigarh and cover all the sightseeing places nearby – 

Taj Chandigarh – The hotel is right in sector 17 and already a brand name, Taj Chandigarh is my first choice for a hotel in the heart of the city. Not to mention they have facilities like room service, pool, fitness centre, wi-fi, friendly staff shuttle, and an in-house bar and lounge also available. Recommended for couples or families as the best place to stay in Chandigarh!

James Hotel – Fancy a hotel with a view of the famous rose garden? James Hotel is the best place to stay in Chandigarh when you like to stay in the city centre. If you’re driving to Chandigarh from Delhi, then James Hotel provides free parking and offers bar and pool facilities as well. They also provide shuttles from airports to the guests flying into Chandigarh.  

Hotel City Heart Premium  – Located in the heart of the city Hotel City Heart Premium is another pick for the best place to stay in Chandigarh. A budget hotel with facilities ranging from free wifi, parking and room service, the hotel will be ideal for people looking to stay in the city. 

JW Marriott Hotel Chandigarh – Another luxurious hotel from Chandigarh City, JW Marriot is another best place to stay in Chandigarh. Located close to sector 17, the 5-star hotel will be a perfect hotel for families with a family room available. I am a fan of luxury, so the outdoor pool and a superb fitness centre are something I look forward to. 

The Lalit Chandigarh – The Lalit Chandigarh will take you to the calm side of Chandigarh city with all the facilities of a 5-star hotel. The Lalit Chandigarh will be the best place to stay in Chandigarh for those who are willing to spend a relaxing getaway in the city with no stress about staying close to the city centre. 

Best Places to Eat in Chandigarh

Chandigarh being the party capital of Punjab , it is undoubtedly a foodie’s paradise and there are a variety of places to eat in Chandigarh. During my short 1.5 days stay in Chandigarh I have tried a variety of restaurants possible. 

Chaayos for Snacks

I am through and through a tea person and love our Indian desi chai. After already tried Chayyos in Delhi I love their decor and authentic chai. Desi signature chai and palak patta crispies from Chayyos are my all-time favourites. If you’re in Elate Mall around the Industrial area, don’t forget to stop by my favourite tea outlet from Chandigarh.

The Crown Patisserie for lunch

On my last day in Chandigarh and after almost 4 hours of exploring the rock garden, we chose “The Crown Patisserie Cafe” based on word of mouth. I can proudly convey that I chose the café and it is surely one of the best places to eat in Chandigarh in the sector 17 market. It’s no secret that I love restaurants with bright decor and friendly staff. The Crown Patisserie got into me with the bright-coloured walls and sitting space, the super friendly staff and the manager. It is thus my top recommendation for the best place to eat in Chandigarh. A detailed review to follow soon.

Pyramid for dinner

For dinner, we chose Pyramid in the Elante Mall over other famous ones like Nando’s, Pyramids of Grill and Chilis . We went in when they lured us to live music and plainly asked us to try it once and allowed us to leave if we didn’t like it. But we didn’t!!

The live music successfully enticed us and we enjoyed our meals there. Although a non-alcoholic person, their offer of 2 Rio beers at 100INR excited us so we jumped right at it. Live music with cheap flavoured beer, delicious food, and amazing service got their name on the list of the best places to eat in Chandigarh. 

How to Reach Chandigarh

Chandigarh is another upcoming city in Northern India and thus is well-connected through Buses, trains, and flights. Hardly 250 km from Delhi and depending on the chosen medium, the time will vary from 2 hours to 5 hours.  Choosing how to travel in India can be a tricky part, but Chandigarh is easily reachable so here are my tips – 

If going by road, you may either hire a cab from Delhi which will take not more than 5.5 hours. If opting for buses, I would vouch for the Volvo & rather Mercedes Benz deluxe buses from Haryana Roadways. Volvo is the most convenient bus available in chair cars (with recliners), or sleeper ones. There are other Volvos from Punjab Roadways, but I would choose the comfortable Mercedes Benz buses and timely service. Merc buses don’t take more than 4.5 hours to Chandigarh and this time I mistakenly chose Volvo from Punjab Roadways taking 6 hours .

If you like Indian trains, I will suggest the premium Shatabdi trains – completely AC with Chair car and First Class options. Shatabdi is the fastest train to Chandigarh taking no more than 4 hours. Don’t opt for other trains, they have a reputation for getting late which can ruin your plans. If you’d like to book online, try using IRCTC for the same, it’s an effective way these days. 

Chandigarh also has an International airport  well-connected through domestic & international airlines. If going via Delhi, the normal airtime will not be more than 50 mins. It will be helpful if you plan to visit Chandigarh in a day. Chandigarh airport is located on the outskirts and will take you to the city in no more than 15-20 mins with hotels nearby.

I had always wondered as a kid why is a single city the capital of two states! Its true that before I read this post, I did not know about the treasures the Chandigarh had. I had skipped Chandigarh before, but now it will be in my list.

Rock Garden is a sculpture garden fully made of home and industrial waste. The garden was created secretly by a government official Nek Chand. Inter-connected waterfalls in the garden are the most popular sites for taking pictures among the tourists. Indeed it is special in itself and a prime example of unimaginable creativity.

I always knew Chandigarh as party city but thanks for introducing other beautiful parts of this city. I would love to explore Rock garden because of unique sculptures. The history of Chandigarh dates back to 8,000 years, and the city was first inhabited during the Harappans dynasty, one of the earliest known civilisations. After separation, East Punjab went to Pakistan and was named Lahore, and Chandigarh became the capital of Punjab.
